Is Bill exaggerating?

Posted: Wednesday, February 27, 2008 6:11 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ’s Carrie Dann and NBC’s Domenico Montanaro
HOUSTON, Texas -- At two campaign stops today, Bill Clinton alluded to an Obama ad, “Moment,” which the former president characterizes as an all-out assault on the 1990s and, by extension, his presidency.

The ad originally aired in Iowa, ran in Texas and Vermont before the March 4th primaries, and the Obama campaign says is no longer running in Texas.

"There's a one-minute ad on in Texas telling you how terrible things were in the 90s," Bill Clinton said earlier today. "Well, I think we did pretty well in the 1990s. …If you believe things were bad in the 90s, just as bad as in this decade, and you believe everybody should be eliminated from being considered for president if they did anything good, I think you should vote for him."

But the ad hardly goes that far. The following is the only reference to the 1990s, and it’s nothing new.

"I don't want to spend the next year, or the next four years, re-fighting the same fights we had in the 1990s," the Illinois senator says in the 60-second spot, cut from his Jefferson-Jackson Dinner speech last November.

The former president objects. "There aren't many facts in there," he said at his last of four events in Houston this afternoon.

"Because what fights should we not have made?" he challenged, going on to enumerate struggles over the budget, education and labor unions that he chalks up as successes for Democrats in the last decade.

"Look, no one wants to go back to the past," he said. "But you have to understand the past in order to avoid repeating its mistakes."

Bill?  Exaggerate?! NO WAY!

...

I'll call that more of a lie, really...
Barrett Report much.
Obama was being kind.  The fights I remember from the 90s were about his indiscretions and lying and cheating.  Let's see--impeachment, a president being disbarred, "I didn't have sex with that woman!"
I would rather not go back to those fights either and if Bill had any sense left, he wouldn't bring it oup.
thanks MSNBZZZZZZ to clarify everything OBAMA says, thanks for clearing that up we will just forget that OBAMA has said"The REPUBLICAN party has been the PARTY of IDEAS the last 15 years and went on to compliment RONALD RAYGUN.He was discounting all that the CLINTONS did.   I say CLINTONS because you give her heat for BILLS presidency but not for experience,BUT once again OBAMA has shown his ability to UNITE WELL THE DEMOCRATS SURE SEEM UNITED AND FROM WHAT HE SAYS ABOUT REPUBS  I M sure they will unite with him too, even though he blames them all for driving the bus in aditch such a quaint way to say war .BUT NEVER KNOWING WAR its easy to take it lightly and say cute trite things like bus in a ditch
Hmmmmm.... What fights should we not have to worry about...
Oh!! I got one!!
How about the one where the Republicans were impeaching the Democratic President!

Yeah, that one sucked. I definitely don't want to do that one again.

But that's just me.
the '90s--let me think---the governments budget was balanced, the want adds consumed the newspaper on sundays---there was no war we were as engaged in as we are now--so we had a president that was a bit of a dog and lied about it--that was between him and his wife--but the country was in much better shape than it is now!! i would take a clinton any day!!!
Bill Exaggerate? NEVER!

"I did not have sex with that woman"
You do mean that "Bill Clinton", Right?

No I dont think he would exaggerate or lie.
Obama has been bagging on "the 90's" for some time now. We know what he means. If he wasn't running against Bill's wife, I think he would be building off of one of the best presidents ever. Instead he is dragging Bill through the mud, just like the Republicans did, just like the Republicans will try to do to every Democratic president elected subsequently. That's what they do- whatever it takes to get control. Too bad Obama is doing the same thing. Self righteous Obama is really the same old politics he denounces. Take off the Obama goggles people, we all knew Bill was good before this race. Has some new light been shed on his attrocious presidency? I don't get it. I still feel the same about Bill; he kicked ass- and another Democrat beating him down really pisses me off.
Bill who? Why all the coverage for Bill Clinton....I haven't seen any coverage of anyone stumping for Obama
Why don't you people get heads  out of Obama's a$$ and read about your precious Obama.

It is amazing that people are this stupid. Obama is a member of a black racist church who's main purpose is Africa and black only promotion, led by a racist preacher who loves and praises Lewis Farrakhan.

Look up Farrakhan ( Nation of Islam)  and Reverend Wright on the web people.........do some homework, read what Obama's church stands for.

I will never vote for this man. I will stay home if he gets the nomination.

To Ron,TX and Linda, Dallas--Whether or not PRESIDENT Clinton had sex with that woman is none of anybody's business.  And frankly I could'nt care less.  He is still one of the best PRESIDENTS this country has ever had.
I sure don't want to go back to the Clintons. All the crap that went on in the WH and then Bill pardoned fugitive financier Marc Rich there at the end!

The Clintons and McCain are corrupt Washington insiders.
I'm an Independent and I'm voting Obama.

Re-Fight the fights we had in the 90s... maybe that could mean the Clinton's financial dealings? Maybe there might be something to the refusal to release tax returns? Where there's smoke, there's fire. We're going to find out, probably after Sen. Clinton has conceded the race, SOMETHING in those tax returns that would have caused yet ANOTHER Clinton calamity.
Hummmmmm.....What fights should we not have to worry about...
Oh!! I got one!!! Farrakhan,Sharpton,Wright-Bigots and Racists..Hey I just gave you three.
What else ya got. Cause that's getting real old. And I might ad that Obama's answer on Iraq last night was amaterish at best. As well as --ah--ah---ah-I can't tell nobody not to talk noce about me even if he is a jew hater and a racist.
What else ya got.
Hey how about he hasn't held any meetings on Afgan since he has been the head of his shoved down our throat big ole bad group.
Ahhhhh, what else ya got?
hey, how about blowwwwwwwwwwwwwwww?
I simply don't get it! Why is the standard being dropped so low for one of the most important jobs on the planet? Why is it okay to disregard a qualified woman and choose an unqualified man? Is it just because Obama is a man? I do not think that there would even be a contest if he were a black female and Hillary were a white male. A black female candidate with little or no experience would have been ridiculed to no end by now, for the mere thought of running against a more experienced white male. Does the river of sexism run deeper in American hearts than the river of racism? The person that is qualified for the job should be the person that is hired to do the job. No one should be passed over because of gender or race. Hillary should clearly be President for the next 8 years and Obama's presidency should come after hers. This way we would have 16 years of good Democratic government.
Obama was never criticizing the presidency of Bill Clinton, nor the results of certain parts of his policies.  The problem Obama was referring to was the continuing polarization of the political parties and the contentious nature of Congress following 1996 especially.  Bill Clinton, God bless his once decent name, is increasingly alienating the people that would have otherwise overlooked his shortfalls and thought him to be a good, clean politician.
If Obama is as ineffectual as a President as he is as a motivational preacher, than God help us all.

Obama has failed to reach his followers.  He has been claiming to not to be using old Washington's tactics of slash and burn, tearing down people.  His words are to paint himself as above it all....a see my halo attitude.  YET ALL OF HIS SUPPORTERS ON THESE COMMENT PAGES ARE FULL OF HATRED, DISCUSTING, VENDICTIVE, UNEDUCATED, INAPPROPRIATE AND ALL THE OTHER ADJECTIVES TO DESCRIBE PEOPLE WHO ARE NOT VERY DECENT IN THEIR TREATMENT OF OTHER HUMANS ON THIS EARTH.   DO YOU PEOPLE SEE HOW THAT REFLECTS ON YOUR OBAMA....WHAT KIND OF A MOVEMENT ARE YOU SEEKING.
HE DOESN'T WANT ANYTHING TO DO WITH THE OLD WASHINGTON POLITICS, JUST THE OLD WASHINGTON POLITICIANS TO ENDORSE HIM.  A POLITICIAN IS A POLITICIAN IS A POLITICIAN.

WHY CAN'T YOU COMMENT ON ISSUES LIKE THE FACT THAT HE JUST ANSWERED TO AN ATTACK BY JOHN MCCAIN ABOUT GOING AFTER AL QAEDA IN AFGHINSTAN. YET MCCAIN CAN NOW COME BACK AND SAY TO OBAMA, YOU HAD THE LAST YEAR TO CHAIR THE COMMITTEE ON AFGHINSTAN.  IS THAT
BEING RESPONSIBLE.   ALSO, THE DRIVING THE TRUCK IN THE DITCH ANOLOGY IS LAME....NO ONE WOULD INTENTIONALLY VOTE TO DRIVE THE TRUCK INTO THE DITCH.
IF HE TRULY WANTS TO LEAD IN THE FUTURE, HE BEST GET IN THE PRESENT AND TALK ABOUT WHAT AND HOW TO GET THE JOB DONE IN THE FUTURE.  IF HIS TRUCK SLIPPED OFF THE ICE INTO THE DITCH IN CHICAGO, WOULD HE WASTE TIME ABOUT HOW IT SLIPPING INTO THE DITCH, OR WOULD HE USE HIS BRAIN AND GET TO WORK GETTING IT OUT OF THE DITCH.   HILLARY CLINTON'S VOTE ON IRAQ WAS THE SAME AS COLIN POWELL'S LYING TO THE UNITED NATIONS AND THE AMERICAN PEOPLE ABOUT IRAQ'S WEAPONS OF MASS DISTRUCTION.  THEY WERE BOTH BETRAYED.  DOES OBAMA BLAME POWELL FOR THE WAR IN IRAQ?  DOES HE STATE THAT COLIN POWELL HAS POOR JUDGMENT?  HIS WHOLE CAMPAIGN HAS BEEN NEGATIVE TOWARD HILLARY AND BASED ON ONE THING, THE VOTE ON IRAQ.  IT SOUNDS VERY SILLY TO BELIEVE THAT SHE SINGLE HANDED IS RESPONSIBLE.  SHE LIKE COLIN POWELL AND ALL AMERICANS AND THE WORLD WERE BETRAYED BY BUSH.

THE PRESENT IS NOW AND WHAT WE CAN DO ABOUT IT.  WHO HAS ENOUGH FOREIGN POLICY EXPERIENCE TO BE PRESIDENT.
OBAMA SUPPORTERS WILL NOT TALK ISSUES BECAUSE THEY KNOW THAT HE DOES NOT HAVE THE EXPERIENCE.  HE BLOW THE LAST YEAR BY NOT WORKING HARD ON THE SUB-COMITTEE
TO SOLVE SOME OF THE PROBLEMS IN AFGHANISTAN.  HIS
RESUME WOULD HAVE BEEN STRONGER.  I THINK THAT SHOWED POOR JUDGMENT.

KARL ROVE AND COMPANY HAVE PLANS TO TRASH HIM, JUST AS THEY HAVE ORGANIZED THE TRASHING OF CLINTON BY THE MEDIA.

OBAMA NEEDS TO BE MORE TRANSPARENT...I understand that he is not taking questions from the National meida now?  Why not?  FOX is bringing up negatives
now, and the other networks will have to address them.  No more pass for Obama.

He just cannot help himself, Bill Clinton has spent a career manipulating things and redefining phrases and words, he manipulated his way out of the draft by making hollow promises he did not keep, he said, " I did not have sex with that woman, oral stimulation of a sex organ is not a sexual act, 'alone' is not 'alone' if other people are in the same building, the word 'is' is subject to interpretation and president by proxy is not the same as a third term. Has Bill not learned yet most people are on to his deception and lying tactics, everytime he opens his mouth Hillary drops in the polls, but maybe that is his plan, if Hillary became president Bill would nolonger get all the attention.
how about the fights against terrorism that didn't happen either.

I don't know about everyone else, but I'll be glad when the primaries are over.  No matter who you support, Obama or Clinton, it's not difficult to see that these back and forth jabs (and worse) are hurting the Democratic party.  After all the unhappiness people have had with the government because of what has happened over the last seven years, the Democrats should have had an easy ride in the November election.  That may not happen thanks to all these attacks - attacks that aren't really helping either candidate.  They *are* certainly providing a lot of fodder for the GOP, leaving them in a position where they won't have to attack the Dem. candidate.  They can simply sound bite or quote so many of the negative things said by the Dem. candidate campaigns without having to get their own hands dirty.  It's a pity that the campaigns can't just stick to the issues.
Senator Obama wants to change the way Washington works.  It is unfortunate that former President Bill Clinton and Senator Hillary Clinton don't get it.  I keep hoping they will see it, but this hope is apparently misplaced.  So long as Senator Obama stays above the fray of mud-slinging, and only engages in advancing the causes he advocates on the campaign trail while seeking a mandate from us, the American People, we will stand with him as President and help him to achieve our goals.  This is simple people.  Together we can do.  Divided we can only fight.

Yes we can!  Obama '08.
Sounds to me like Bill is more interested in
defending his presidency than campaigning for
Hillary!!
Here's some info for you. OBAMA SMOKES. He's a smoker. Sorry, this may sound really ridiculous, but I just absolutely cannot vote for someone who smokes. I was floored when I found this out.
This is classic Obama Blahma.  He doesn't want to refight the battles of the ninties?  Well, who exactly does Obama imagine does want to refight battles from the past.  The whole point of Obama saying pointless things like this is to make himself seem somehow more focused on the future, thus implying that Hillary somehow isn't focused on the future.  It's the same old distraction politics Obama claims he wants to change, and unworthy of all the media attention it receives.  Why wont the media force Obama to tell us what changes he is honestly for, instead of parroting his campaign chants.  It's the media's job to cover the issues, not play gushing advocates for Obama.
Clinton and her team have allowed her experience & long-time commitment to public service to be depicted as anti-change and anti-hope, at a time when voters will choose change & the faintest promise of hope over just about anything. Instead of criticizing Obama for his lack of experience and his "elegant but empty" rhetoric (their begrudging description) she ought to give him credit for restoring optimism and vitality and the vocabulary of hope back into American politics. And then she and her team should embrace the appetite for change in America with a vengeance and make the indisputable link between change and competence and experience. Any student of history and human affairs understands that talking about change is the easiest part of a change endeavor. Change - real, meaningful, socially impactful change - only comes through roll-up-your-sleeves hard work, long days at the side of a cadre of competent committed colleagues and, in almost every instance, huge sacrifices. In the end, in those rare instances when promises of change and hope can be delivered on, it has demanded extreme competence; steadfast execution; and thoughtful, intelligent, competent management over an always-longer-than-expected period of time. The list of people who've accomplished such change is telling enough, as far as the competence and commitment and cost that is required. Mandela. Rabin. Lennon. Sakharov. King. Gorbachev. Gandhi. Kennedy. And many others whose  names we all recognize. Yes, talking about change and envisioning change is essential. It might even be the most important thing on Day 1. But starting on Day 2, and most definitely on Day 307, it'll be competence and know-how that'll matter that much more.
President Clinton has definitely exaggerated regularly... nothing new there.  It won't go on much longer.

Obama/Edwards '08
Bill sure had a good time.  I would bet he would pay some of his kazakh millions to have it that way again!  It's kind of like how people used to say the sixties are over.  The 90s are over also.
Poor Bill.  His ego is so huge, he just can't see around himself during this primary.  He's on the defense for every little thing Obama says.  Bill, the country did enjoy some of the best of times economically when you were president, and I think anyone would be unhonest if they denied that.  However, you mustn't forget that you were impeached during this time (the '90s), and Congress was up in arms about your moral behavior.  Could it perhaps be that is what Se. Barack was referring to- those turbulent times when the country was embarassed by your behavior?  Mr. President, you are a charismatic man, often marveled for your thick skin and ability to overcome adversity.  However, your demeanor has been really sad these last couple of months.  Stop while you're ahead and before you topple the great economic legacy your presidency will be known in history for.  But, also accept the fact that you were one of just a few presidents that were impeached, and a lot of people, democrats included, were disappointed by this.  Do your wife and the American people a favor and quit comparing yourseld and your presidency to every everything.
Bill really needs to think before he asks rhetorical questions.

Ken, for someone who acts like they know a lot about politics you seem to be severely lacking in the english dept.  You and people like you have a complex, your problem is you think the Presidency was "owed" to Clinton.  I'm sorry she wasn't just grandfathered in.....
enough media, the Clintons are the best this country has seen, better than JFK, Regan, & so on. What is wrong with the media today, you are and sound like a bunch of gossip columnist, I wonder how long this cable MSNBC, CNN and FOX are going to last on TV, trash
Aaron,

Love the satire!!  Hilarious.

A former Minnesotan,
Catherine
Wow, he is really feeling sensitive over his legacy lately.

Get real, Bill. I did like you as a president, but you are really just starting to annoy me. Yes we were doing well, but Congress has been gridlocked since Newt and Clintons locked horns in the 90s (and don't forget all - HRC is quite comfy with Newt now). Yep, those would be the fights in the 10+ years that has left Congress meaningless. And yes, I am ready to abandon that strategy. HRC is great in the Senate; let her stay there.
to Kenn.
Dear Kenn you seem to be little behind on the curve, maybe you should listen to Obamas speech (VICTORY) speech in SC. (youtube) maybe you dont understand what the word "were" means.
obama: the republicans WERE the party of ideas" it was baiting Bill.

Obama seems to be everything to everyone. he is too christian, not christian.

he is too liberal and republican-lover

he is too black and not Black enough.
As a journalist I have perpetully amazed at the fawning over Sen Obama in this MSNBC column. It really has been something to watch.. Writers of particular column are his demographic base but the bias, not even hidden, has been amazing. Soon an objective (university-based study) of this particular MSMBC's segmant over the last last year will surface. Let's do the math on your word choice, leads, sarcasms, etc etc that clearly favors Obama over others... look out for this it will also make news.
What does Obama stand for? Hope? Can hope solve the problems in the world by just hoping that all will go away? Or is it knowledge and experience and hard work that gets you where you want to go? I believe people fear the past rather than learn from it. Bill Clinton is one of the best Presidents I have had the honor to have in my lifetime. Obama seems to want to lead the people on an unknown road.  And some people seem to want this.  I myself won't follow someone who lives on dreams alone.  Actions always speak louder than words. Obama needs to have more experience in working and improving life for the people, before he can run for the highest office in the land.
Bill, the 90's are long gone.  We all know that YOU were having fun in the White House,  but those days are OVER!  So GET OVER IT!  The people of this country deserve better and NOTHING can stand in the way of MILLIONS of people CALLING FOR CHANGE-Not even you!  WE are tired of the scandals and the lies and all of the rest of the garbage that goes on behind closed doors, and even right in front of our noses.  The rest of the world is watching, and waiting. This country needs to cut the crap, take care of each other,  and try and redeem our good standing with the rest of our World.  This will not be accomplished with more lies, scandals, bad judgement,  or WARS.  This will only happen with communication, unity, good judgement, and PEACE.  This election doesn't belong to you Bill! (you either, John)  It belongs to US!
PEACE OUT!
OBAMA 08
I have a theory.  I think that Bill starts listening to his own speeches so much that he eventually loses ground in reality and becomes a parody of himself.  That almost sounds like I'm trying to crack a joke, but I'm grimly serious.  It hasn't been pleasant at all to realize that everything the Republicans ever said about him was, well, pretty much true.
Clinton will win! Do not focus too much on Bill this time.  Hillary will be the president!  I think Obama is very slick too.
Two words, Mark Rich
The Idiots at the NewYork Slimes's is now saying McCain is not eligible to be president lmao, you dumocrats are running scared already and will lie cheat and steal your way to an election. The we surrender dumocrats are going to lose and lose BIG
Oh wow how surprising another anti-clinton article from msnbc..... MSNBC is as bad as fox in regards to being 'fair and balanced'....what a joke
I have deep respect for Bill Clinton.  A man flawed, but a man with the courage to risk.  I have deep respect for Ronald Reagan.  A man flawed, but a man with the courage to risk.  What I don't have respect for is mindless squabbling over things past, things which can't be redone, fixed, or rolled-back.  Moreover, I would suggest that any intelligent human would conclude that life is as much a lesson of learning from mistake as succeeding from good judgment.  Please Mr. Clinton, leave the future to those who have earned the right to lead.  We had our chance, and frankly, we didn't leave the world a much better place.  New leadership can't hurt more then we did.  Step out of the way or be run over and left by the side as casualty rather then as trusted sage.  Any party who thinks they can build the future with ideas proven weak and flawed are either stubborn, insane, or a combination of both.  Here's to a new day.
Yeah, strange that Clinton didn't mention that healthcare fight or that whole impeachment thing.
Looking back on the 90's things seem great as it was before 9/11 and the war in Iraq and Afghanistan. One of the reasons things have been hard during the Bush years is that Clinton ignored national security and allowed Al Queda to grown unchecked. The first world trade center bombing, Black Hawk down in Somalia, the destruction of three of our embasies in Africa and the attack on the USS Cole brought no effective response. Bush was only in Office for eight months when he had to deal with the result of Clinton's incompetence.
It is clear to me that Bill is reaching for straws in his desperate attempt to save Hillary's Campaign, and boost her ratings.  However it just seems the more they complain about Sen. Obama the more we are remined of the 90s, and that dosn't equal becoming President for Mrs. Clinton.
If Bill were honest, he would admit that it was his indiscretions that practically paved the way for George Bush to be elected. He fired up the Republican Party and the Christian Right so bad he could not even campaign for his own Vice-President. Bill is not the leader he thinks he was but once again, this is about his ego and not really the American people.
I hope all those hate Clinton kids never have to go to there grandparents for money because we woulden,t havw=e any if it werent for a Clinton
