Oh-eight (R): Born in the USA?

MCCAIN: The campaign isn't taking chances on the issue of whether McCain was born in the U.S. Under the Constitution, a president must be natural-born. The New York Times: "Mr. McCain was born on a military installation in the Canal Zone, where his mother and father, a Navy officer, were stationed. His campaign advisers say they are comfortable that Mr. McCain meets the requirement and note that the question was researched for his first presidential bid in 1999 and reviewed again this time around.”

“But given mounting interest, the campaign recently asked Theodore B. Olson, a former solicitor general now advising Mr. McCain, to prepare a detailed legal analysis. ‘I don’t have much doubt about it,’ said Mr. Olson, who added, though, that he still needed to finish his research.’”

The Boston Globe: “The story of how the "Keating Five" senators allegedly pressured regulators to lay off a failing Arizona S&L became a major scandal, and marked a turning point in McCain's life -- the near-death of his political career followed by his eventual rebirth as a crusader for campaign finance reform.”

“The events of 1987, when McCain met with regulators, and 1991, when the Senate Ethics Committee concluded that he used ‘poor judgment’ in the matter, are only dimly remembered by many. But McCain's emergence as the likely GOP nominee, combined with the rising volume of anti- lobbying rhetoric in the presidential campaign, has brought renewed attention to the Keating Five case, prompting questions about what McCain learned from it, what he's accepted was wrong, and whether he now is stepping back from some of his own scrutiny of his past errors.”

George Will doesn't have kind things to say about McCain: "Although his campaign is run by lobbyists; and although his dealings with lobbyists have generated what he, when judging the behavior of others, calls corrupt appearances; and although he has profited from his manipulation of the taxpayer-funding system that is celebrated by reformers -- still, he probably is innocent of insincerity. Such is his towering moral vanity, he seems sincerely to consider it theoretically impossible for him to commit the offenses of appearances that he incessantly ascribes to others.

Such certitude is, however, not merely an unattractive trait. It is disturbing righteousness in someone grasping for presidential powers."

“McCain won the endorsement of Texas evangelical leader John Hagee on Wednesday, which could boost his standing among religious conservatives who have been reluctant to embrace the likely nominee. Hagee, who heads a 19,000-member church in San Antonio, is best known for his outspoken support of Israel and writings on the Middle East, where he envisions a blood-soaked clash between East and West leading to the return of Jesus Christ.”

Natural born American does not mean immigrate from Panama.
mccant got caught with his fingers in the cooky jar once, how many times has he not been caught?
is mccant the Manchurian candidate?
How funny is this? McCain may not even be eligible for Prez. Seems to me that McCain has a ton of dirt to sift through. Mr Integrity may be Mr Faker.
I have now watched the msnbc mini-bio's ("The Candidates") on Hillary, Barack & McCain. If you haven't seen them, they are very nicely done, unbiased looks at the life of each candidate. John McCain certainly suffered a difficult time as a prisoner of war and I believe all Americans join me in gratitude for that. Beyond that, the bio revealed a reckless man, who did very poorly in school throughout his life. Continuing to be a partying underachiever in the Naval Acadamy he finished at the bottom of his class barely graduating. Ignoring safety warnings from his commander he was shot down and became a POW. Again, I have compassion for the suffering he endured there.
We've had 2 terms of a reckless underachiever making bad decisions for our country. Yet another reckless underachiever is NOT what we need now.
Isn't he a citizen if he was born of American citizens?

Curious...
A substantive question but one I assume will be answered in McCain's favor. It goes to questions about original constitutional intent and the status of overseas military bases.

I see both questions breaking McCain's way. The probable intent of that qualification was to preclude foreigners from becoming president. Its a tough argument to paint McCain as a foreigner.

When I was in the military, and stationed overseas (Okinawa), I always had the impression that the base was considered part of the U.S. Local laws and law enforcement had no jurisdiction. Of course there was a diplomatic angle, in which there was an incentive not to enfuriate the host nation - so servicemembers accused of crimes off base often were turned over to local authorities after something less extensive than an extradiction hearing. But when that happened, it was always clear it was being done because the U.S. wanted to cooperate with the host nation and not because it had to.
Trying to make McCain out as anything other than a natural-born American is just plain silly. US law is pretty clear that children born to soldiers while serving outside of the US are American citizens. While not my choice for President, I respect John McCain as a person and genuinely hope that this nonsense is not a sign of things to come...toward either one of the eventual candidates.
I'm not a McCain supporter, but this should not be an issue at all. He was born to parents that are US citizens and the Panama Canal was US territory. Case closed.

I support Obama, but McCain's citizenship shouldn't be under question in my opinion.  Our military bases are considered US soil, same as our Embassies.  He was born to US citizen parents, one of which was a highly decorated military commander.  This should be a non-issue.
I'm not a McCain supporter but there is no way he is ineligible for the office.  It's patently absurd to even suggest it.  It may make for fun "what ifs" around the water cooler, but the idea that any court in this country will disqualify McCain is beyond ridiculous.
I don't care if John was born in the Canal Zone.
I don't care how old he is.
I don't care who he is swapping spit with.
I DO CARE that he is a lunatic, who want Americans dying in Iraq for another hundred years and who knows how many other countries he decides to invade.
Must be a boring day on the political news trail if they are trying to make this news.  He is a US citizen....thats like saying a couple vacationing in Mexico has a kid and the kid is mexican...stupid liberal media

Vote Republican 08!
The Keating 5 thing cost tax payers a lot. No wonder McCain has limited knowledge of economic matters. McCain is the male version of 'snl-DEBBIE DOWNER'.
I recall DNC overlooked some Chenney state residency issues in 2000 (move from TX to WY).

Such issues should not be overlooked this time, the constitution and accompanying laws of the United States must be upheld.
I guess the lefties say he's not an American because his parents were in the military. How come he didn't spend most of his life in Bahstun like every other descent white person. All other caucasoids are ignorant-trailer-park trash.
I try not to bash the media, but is this REALLY worth noting? How come there isn't a story around Obama defering to Hillary on the "Putin's succesor" question at the debate? He wasn't gonna jump on that one and when HRC was finished he said, "Yeah, what she said."
Iraqis are tired of losing their family members. They want a chance at life like any other person. If we leave, they will get help from someone else. They most likely will look east, then we can forget it. You think we're in a sh**-storm now, just wait till Russia or China get involved! 3,000 lives lost will pale in comparison.
Just my opinion, but McCain is the only one who can keep us safe. I don't care what any of you say, but my family comes first. I'd rather be poor and alive than be rich and dead.
Interesting question. Since the Panama Canel Zone was leased - same as Gitmo from Cuba. Our present administration claims that Gitmo is not part of the US (thus the prisoners aren't subject to US laws like Habius Corpus) makes the case for him not being a "Native Born" US citizen. Can't have it both ways.
I am a democrat for Hillary and this article makes me sick. John McCain fought in Vietnam and was a war hero and that is the respect he gets from the Obama camp, again know respect. I assume that means all our Military over in Iraq and Afganistan will not get any respect when they come home either. Maybe someone that attended muslim school when he was a child has know right to be President. You stupid Republicans that went in the primaries and voted for this joker because you did not like Hillary and  will never vote for him in the general should be ashamed of yourself. Old saying watch what you pray for.
The Panama Canal Zone was under US control starting in 1903 under a treaty (Hay-Bunau Varilla Treaty) with Panama. Although the US agreed to pay "rent" so to speak, the language in the treaty is pretty strong, at one point referring to the control given to the US "as if it were sovereign" and that the US has jurisdiction over criminal offences "within" the zone. Sounds like the US had control over just about all that went on within the zone, including the people there. Based on that, I would say McCain has nothing to worry about.
When will Sen. McCain be asked to denounce (reject) the endorsement of Hagee?  Sen. Obama had the moral fiber to denounce (reject) Farrakhan.

Hagee is not a mainstream Evangelical.  He is virulently anti-Catholic and homophobic.  And he preaches the urgency of an imminent war with Iran.  Aong other things.

McCain should take the moral high ground and denounce/reject Hagee without being asked to.
McCain is the Panamanchurian Candidate and is NOT eligible to be President.

Details at http://muddythoughts.blogspot.com/2008/02/panmanchurian-candidate-mccain.html

It lays it out clearly enough that even McCain apologists can understand it.
this is very typical of how our country treats children of military personnel. they are not given the same rights and opporutinities as other citizens. military brats do not have the rights to instate tuition benefits, but meanwhile the media and congress are fighting for those rights for illegal immigrants.
Kinda funny how the R. give Obama hell for haveing Muslim heritage but the second we find out Mccain was born out of country it's a stupid question, of where we came from really matters. What happend to just picking who's best for the country not who's from this country?
And liberal mediophiles wonder why the military still leans to the right.  THIS is why.  The press is running this flag up the pole, without even considering what it would imply to all of our military families.  Imagine if all children born to military families stationed out of country were not natural born American Citizens.....that is so ridiculous, I would only expect to hear such absurdity on an unsponsored personal blog, NOT actual mainstream news sites.
