Michelle Obama on the 'fear bomb'

Posted: Thursday, February 28, 2008 11:30 AM by Mark Murray

From NBC/NJ's Mike Memoli
CANTON, OH -- Michelle Obama often refers to what she calls the "fear bomb" that was used against her husband in his Senate race, as rivals questioned whether someone with his name could be elected.

Today she acknowledged that it is happening again in his presidential race, and said it's an example of why America can't wait for a leader like him to be elected.

"They threw in the obvious, ultimate fear bomb," Obama said of her husband's 2004 Senate race. "We're even hearing [that] now. … 'When all else fails, be afraid of his name, and what that could stand for, because it's different.'" She said rivals use innuendo to play on fears. "Just as they're saying it now," she said.

But, she told about 200 supporters this morning at a restored theater in Canton, Obama won despite that "climate of negativity and doubt" in 2004, and even after standing up against the Iraq war. "We learned, number one, that when power is threatened by real change they will say anything to stop it," she said. "But we also learned that the American people can handle the truth."

What America needs, she added, is a "fundamentally different kind of leadership," one that challenges people to be different, and better to one another. And that, she said to critics who say it is not his time, cannot wait. "Barack Obama will be the kind of leader we need right now, not in four years or eight years or 12 years," she said. "We can't wait to get this right. We need it to happen today."

Mrs. Obama said her husband's effort to bring people together is grounded in the lessons he learned growing up. "You don't rip your opponents apart, because you never know when you're going to have to sit right down next to them and figure something out," she said. "That's how he was raised. Imagine a president of the United States who is trying to bring those values to the Oval Office."

Why do politicians use fear?  Because is works just like politicians always talk of freedom but then pass more laws and restrictions which take away freedom.  democrats have been using fear to slam bush for years now, even though he acts like a democrat  in regards to his policies.  The name thing is stupid and ignorant. There are plenty reasons Obama shouldnt be elected but his name isint one of them.  how about that he supports partial birth abortions, which in case you didnt know is where they birth the baby except for the head then kill it.  3 inches more it would be considered a person. where is their hope?
Obviously racists don't have jobs and have time to sit around and write crap on blogs!!

My excuse today is that I am home from work sick..and just got a little sicker reading the junk on this blog. As an elderly white woman, I am disgusted and not proud of a country that is so mean spirited about Mrs.Obama. I can only imagine how difficult her life has been and continues to be in a country that judges her by how she looks. She has not played the race card, people, but she has given an accurate accounting of life for people of color in this country. The only "card" that I have seen played in this race is that of "gender" and the "permanent victim" role of the opponent. Focusing on policy differences is what intelligent informed voters need to be doing.
Okay right-wing knuckle-draggers, a lesson in racisism.

In order to be a "racist", one must have two distict ("special" for those of you that don't understand big words)qualities:

1. Be of a different race than the group being oppressed or disadvantaged

and

2. Have power over the other other race.

So, pay attention because this is the hard part, in American, whites would have the "power" and would be a different race from those people who are not white and are at a disadvantage.

This means that Ms. Obama cannot possibly be a racist but has been a victim of racism. Now is that too hard to understand?

Any one else notice every Obama supporter sounds the same. Obama 08, Yes we can, can u give us why he should be President (other than he's now a celebrity more than any actor). Something with real substance. God, you all sound like robots. Are you all brainwashed and you can't see the truth!

To whomever says that Barack is a fundamentalist terrorist Muslim:
Do you think this government, McCain, Hillary and all the people in power would allow a fundamentalist terrorist Muslim to run for president?
Do you think they are stupid?
Your words are immoral, hateful, and anti-Christian.
I could care less about his name, race, color, gender ect. What I want to know is why he associates himself with racist radicals and a biased church. Why has he choosen Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright as his spritual leader and mentor? Why does Dr. Jeremiah Wright adore Louis Farrakahn?

Obama's own campaign staffer, (Jessie Jackson Jr.)says you need only ask O.J. (simpson) how to beat a white women. Absolutly disgusting and I for one reject Obama and Michelle's hipocrisy!

Wow, I meant to say "fills my heart"!  Sorry folks, I was in a hurry and I'm at work!
Sunny from Nevada, I Love You for not only who you are but your opinion of how people should act or think.  I concur with all of what you have said.  I myself am an entrepenure, a man who started out with a thought which generated into a pretty successful business.  I just wanted to let you know that this american stands with you and the Obama's.
You Fox News Republicans are great!  You watch the "no spin zone" and recite the ignorant and intellectually lazy opinions expressed and fail to display critical thinking abilities.  The Republicans have used fear to maintain power since 9/11 and it will not work anymore because people are starting to realize that the U.S. policies are dumb.  Furthermore, you think that all Latin Americans are Mexican and they are all here illegally.  Newsflash: the southwest quadrant of "YOUR" country used to be Mexico and was stolen in the most unjust war in American history.  You fail to realize or mention that there was NO al-qaeda in Iraq prior to our illegal and ill-advised invasion of that sovereign country.  Lastly, the U.S. has been a terrorist country since its inception: Native Americans, slavery, Japanese, etc.  Also, have you all forgot about Fort Benning, Ga?  That would be where the U.S. has trained terrorists for decades on American soil.  Stop allowing yourselves to be diluted by dumb and ignorant pundits and begin thinking for yourselves.
Michelle Obama is so impressive. I hope she will become the first lady. The republicans use people's name to scare us. I'm not afraid. I am not afraid. You will not divide us.  The American People are smart enough to see the politics of FEAR. Republicans have used politics of hate & fear to keep their people in line.I am a D.A.R member, which means my family was one of the first families to come to American. My moms family came on the first boat. My dad's family came on the second. American's won't be fooled again by the silly season of politics.
I am proud of my name. I am proud of Barack Hussein Obama. His name is cool. You people who think it's important not to wear a flag pin or other silliness are ridiculous! Americans stand up for goodness! Stand up for dignity! Stand up for character ! Stand up for real change. I'm tired of fear politics! I want to make America better.
Go America. Let's become great together. Barack means Blessing! Hussein means Handsome. We Americans have a handsome blessing!!!! Come on America lets be Great as the UNITED STATES!!!
I have to say I fear for our country when I read the level of hatred and nastiness in these posts.  I believe in being passionate about your convictions, but I think this level of vindictiveness and personal attack is way beyond what is necessary to get your point across.  Who are we if this is the way we treat each other?  I am apalled.

Is that right?  Then why do some in the Obama camp encourage race baiting as a tactic to discredit Hillary Clinton?  Review the racially oriented accusations leveled at both Clintons and understand how these charges have been part of a stratagy to alienate African Americans from the Clintons.

If the allegations of manipulation of the facts to create an hostile racial environment for the Clintons is true then Obama has violated the trust of all Democrats and played well meaning people for total chumps.
Heard a minister call in on a talk show today that made an interesting point. Obama has gone tot he same church for 20 years. He now wants to say he doesn't agree with EVERYTHING the church stands for. Now, if you're a Christian and you're taking your children to church, why would you take them to one where you don't believe everything they stand for?
Michelle Obama said she wouldn't vote for Hillary Clinton. She also made a snide remark about Hillary can't keep her own house clean - how could she keep the White House??? No respect - won't she just be a fine First Lady. Makes me sick thicking about it.
Its amusing to me to see the republicans and even the Clintons(who started this mess with the release of the picture over the weekend)go down this path. Sadly, Clinton and most of her supporters are in denial aboout why she cant win. Its not the media fault and the American people are not being duped into voting for Obama. The reason is plain and simple. Her husband(Bill Clinton) and the fact that close to 50% of Americans do not like her. She keeps talking about experience but she is refusing to remember what we all know. Outside of policy, the 90's was all that great. It was filled with scandals and bitter fighting which left the country both embarassed and divided. It was the Democratic Policies that made the 90's a sucess. Not the Clintons. The Clintons were the reason Democrats lost the house in '94. So the most important things in voters mind will be character. We know Bill Clinton has none. Now we find out that Hillary has no character either. And these lastest attacks from her and her campaign along with releasing a photo to the republicans speaks volumes to that.
i'm a woman who will NOT be voting for hillary clinton.  i'm voting for OBAMA.  it amuses me to hear these so-called women claiming that we should all blindly support her based on gender alone.  oh, but then again, i'm black--so i guess the old sojourner truth refrain of "ain't i a woman?" would be appropos in this election cycle.
Let's take a close look in honesty at what preconceptions, biases, and prejudices we have hold towards those who have different thoughts and ideas from ours. What is best for American future is I believe to elect a candidate who can instill spirits of hope, courage, wisdom, and justice in American's mind and soul. I believe Obama has character to carry that out for American future!!
I just can't believe how ignorant some people are.  Some of you say, it is his middle name there should be no shame, and then others imply because his mother and father named him Barack Hussein Obama he is some scary person.

We have no control over what our parents name us.  His father left when he was two and had zero influence over him.  He didn't meet his father's side of the family until he was in his 20's, he was raised by his white mother and grandparents who are not nor ever where muslims.  Even if they were, so what.  All Muslims are not bad people.

I just heard Bay Buchanan said he had Muslim in his blood, can someone please tell me how you have a religion in your blood?  This is why I'm saying it is clear that using his middle name is race baiting, and I think if all of us would stop lying to ourselves or acting naive we know there are those who are stupid enough to believe your name makes you one thing or the other.

How quickly some Americans forget that one of United States greatest allies was King Hussein of Egypt!
Don't you Obamamaniacs realize that your rudeness and cruelty to Clinton only pushes her supporters further away from ever supporting your candidate ?

It only shows how politically naive you are
Great post SunnyV.  We should be proud to have a man who has inspired young people to take charge of their country and take it back so they will have a future.  Yet there are those who just want to destroy people because of their name or the color of their skin.

Americans need to grow up and get smart - they have let their leaders take away their rights and now we finally have someone who wants to lead us in the right direction.

Mia, King Hussein was the king of Jordan, not Egypt (Egypt has a system of "elected" dictators).  And Jordan has never been one of the United State's "greatest allies."  Hussein was not an ally so much as he was easy to manipulate as he was kept alive by Mossad, Israel's intelligence service (most people don't know that the majority Palestinian population of Jordan wanted Hussein dead for decades as they resented Hashemite rule over what could have been their own nation, not to mention their poor treatment at Hashemite hands).  It's an honest mistake, but one I thought I should correct for you (btw, I don't think you're stupid or anything, so if anyone posts after me and says you are you can tell them Shtuey authorized you to tell them to go shove it).

The current King of Jordan, Abdullah, is more eager to ally himself with the US as Jordan's main backer, what was the Soviet Union, is not playing as prominent a role for the regime.  And the fact that we invaded his next door neighbor is pretty good incentive as well.

But that's as maybe.  Senator Obama's name is not the problem.  It's his lies about his campaign financing, specifically his reaping federal lobbyist and pac money while he claims he's not accepting it; his inability to condemn Louis Farrakhan and the Nation of Islam as the anti-semitic, and generally racist organization that it is; and his continued support of the head of his church who awards and honors the aforementioned Jew hater.  That's what I have a problem with.  Oh, and let's not forget his balking on his public financing pledge, and his pandering to American Jews by saying he supports Israel--one of America's greatest allies-- when in truth he does not (he changed his position when he ran for the Senate as American Jews are a larger, and generally a more politically powerful voting block than the Palestinians).

I couldn't care less about his name.

Obama is a duplicitous liar, playing the same old deceitful games, while marketing himself as the candidate of change (like George W. Bush did in 2000--he didn't want to debate his opponent either).

His name is the least of his problems.

BTW Michelle, your husband won his Senatorial election because Jack Ryan got outed in a sex scandal, and your husband had the good fortune of running against Alan Keyes, who set up a sham residence in Illinois so he could run at the last minute.  A moldy dust mop could beat Alan Keyes.  If there was any fear involved it was that Alan Keyes might have ended up being the junior Senator from Illinois.  That would scare me too.

So what was the point of this statement again Mrs. Obama?  Oh yeah...unity, hope and change.  I must have forgotten that while reading your implied statement that anyone who doesn't vote for your husband is a racist.

Barack Obama:  change you shouldn't believe in.
Shame on you Michelle. If you see your husband dropping in the polls let's just play the don't be afraid of Barrack card. Only you in the Democratic Party says how your not proud and you are being targeted by bias. Go home and shut you mouth. Who ever told you to campain must be for Hillary or McCain cause everytime you talk people walk.
If you watched the debate this week, Obama went along with the Schiavo vote even though he KNEW it was wrong. He didn't do anything to stop it.  Now, Hilary says she voted on Iraq based on the information she had at the time. Doing NOTHING when you know something is wrong is worse than making a mistake.
"Now, if you're a Christian and you're taking your children to church, why would you take them to one where you don't believe everything they stand for?"
-- oknok

Because you are Catholic? Was that trick question oknok?
All hope and no substance so everyone knows that Olberman ,Tucker, Mattews are not biggots.  No they are just sexists.

The Mrs. O not being proud to be American was covered by the media about 1 day.  The media has really Screwed HRC because she is a woman.  The republicans are so afraid of Hillary that they are using Karl Rove to influence (behind the scene) the media/coverage always negative towards HRD.  I don't get it, the media is supposed to be neutral, unbiased reporting but Tim Russert is the worst I have ever seen regarding his negative position towards HRD.
I think the media should do their job and quit trying to skew the truth towards their preference.  The debate was so lopsided in favor of B Hussein O.  I am not a racist or a sexist but an observer that was disgusted with the media, especially Tim Russert.  He needs to get a real job (and lose some weight).
Many of you are assuming Obama will be elected. So, I present this hypothetical. In the debate, he said, even though he had accepted the chair of the NATO oversight sub-committee, he blew off that responsibility because that acceptance came at the beginning of his campaign. IF he's elected, he will begin running for re-election in two years.  Is he going to blow off his presidential responsibilities because he's too busy running for re-election?
al rohnert, it might be politically naive to not believe that many so-called Clinton and Obama supporters are really Republican dirty tricksters.
Take notes Bill Clinton:   Michelle's speech is about her husband, not about her.
C.A, To think that a enlightened, tolerant lib Dem as yourself would make a statement right out of the klan hand-book is really great. I dont like the way you think or what you say so leave the country. Wow what a joke. I read these blogs daily the comments such a rethugs, the Republican smear machine, the fear monger rove, not to mention the hypocritacal Christians. You guys are worse, for some reason you display the behavior you condemn conservatives for. It is really funny to watch you do it to yourselves. Remember the "vast right wing conspiracy?" Take a look in the mirror, what you say disgusts you the most is what you are. Think about this, the things in America that really bring the ire of Muslims is the blatent dissregaurd of any type of morality. Gay rights, abortion, open sexual activity, the very things the Dem party champions. So how is the fact of a leader that openly embraces and defends all of these things going to bring them closer to the US?
Yes, ma'm, a fundamentalist leader that's what we need and your man was raised to be The One.  Was that something he learned at home, the mosques, both, or where.  Elitist Harvard would seem an odd place.  Revko, Ayres and the London financeer seem unlikely saints.  When you think about it, few are the elders who strap-on martyrdom vests or allow themselves to be crucified.

The basic difficulty is the indolent hopelessness charismatic ideocrats prey upon and bait with other-wordly rewards.  Our actions make the life we live our heaven or hell.  The words of the ideocrats paint the walls, we choose the rooms that suit us.

"I have a dream" was also Joe Smith's story.  'What my country can do for me' is what Obamanation is selling.  I know what ails you and I'll fix it for you, just give me what I want first so I can help you, is what those too lazy to help themselves are buying.

Spoiled children are never satisfied.  Obliging parents bear the blame, even from the kids when they can't help themselves.  Certainly teach someone to fish, even how to make a hook and where to get the bait, but to simply multiply the loaves and fish is not something we can do.  No matter how many times we say it.

Words matter but actions speak louder.  Be careful what you wish for, particularly if it seems too good to be true.  Buyer beware.

Who can you trust more, someone whose whole life will be transformed by his words, or someone whose actions have formed his life?

Yes, we'd all like to be enjoying balmy breezes with no concerns for what the mail may bring.  Unfortunately there are those among us who'd put arsenic in our tea.
Leave Mrs Obama alone!!!! She is intelligient, educated, with a lot of class. Stop pouncing and attacking her every word. Please don't mention her and Hillary in the same conversation, Mrs Obama is so above Hilliary in every way. Hillary comes off like a brawler, whinner, arrogant and not real. I think she would make an awful president!!!!

Go Obama 08!!!!!!!
All you experts saying Barack's Republican challengers for his Senate seat were nobodies, forget HE HAD A VERY NASTY PRIMARY FIGHT IN ILLINOIS!!!! You know, quite frankly, I cannot believe the tone of some of you supposed "Democrats".  I am an independent and I supported Barack Obama in the Missouri Primary and will support him in November if he is the nominee. I can tell you this, Hillary will NOT do well in Missouri. I have a lot of extremely staunch Republican friends who have said that they might not vote if it is between McCain and Obama, BUT if it is Hillary and McCain, they would vote just to keep her and Bill out of the Whitehouse. You "Democrats" cannot even see what you have here in Barack Obama. You have a young, energetic, man who is also an extremely good orator.  Oh, and by the way, those of you who say there is no substance are obviously not paying attention.  I am 44 years old and I really take offense to being told that I am delusional because I support Mr. Obama.  I would also caution the people on this site who are degrading Hillary. While I do not support her, I also view her as pretty courageous for putting herself through this. That being said, I cannot vote for John McCain, due mainly to his stance on the war. I have relatives in the military and a few are over there right now. I respect and honor their service, but I feel that these brave men and women talents are being wasted trying to control a civil war and propping up a government that has NO incentive to pull things together.  I am also extremely tired of the partisan bickering. Enough said.
I am a supporter of Senator Clinton, but I am very disturbed by how many people are blindly following Obama and openly bashing Clinton.  I have been asked, "Why aren't you going to vote for Obama?  Do you not want a black man in the oval office?"  Excuse me???  Does that matter?  Is that the only issue?  What about the ideals, dreams and foresight of the candidate?  Just because someone votes for Clinton does not mean they are racist!!!
If Obama's message is "hope" then why is this election tearing people apart?
I also want to reply to the posts I have seen about the Clinton campaign "leaking" a picture of Obama in traditional Muslim clothing.  Does anyone have proof that Clinton is responsible?
I haven't heard ANY "below the belt" comments from the Clintons, but I have heard several inappropriate comments made by Mrs. Obama towards Senator Clinton and her personal life.
Stick to politics, Obamas.  Quit blame shifting and bringing up the irrelevant.  Perhaps you should stop talking and actually come up with a presidential plan and campaign that stands for something and will contribute to our country.
Hey folks help me out.  I read in some comments yesterday that Mrs. Obama has said some to the effect of BHO healing broken souls.  Where did that come from?   If it is true, I feel sorry for them.  God heals broken souls and last I heard God's position was still filled and BHO doesn't qualify.  However, that wouldn't stop the biased media nor him from trying to push it through while some folks are looking as they have the BHO candidacy.  God bless us all.
Will political correctness allow the Chief Justice of the United States of America to say Barack Hussein Obama when he takes the oath of office in Jan 09?
Or will the Chief Justice be called a racist? Think about it!!!!!
Obama won in Illinois because Bernie from "Weekend at Bernie's," as long as he was a Democrat, would have won that race. That race wasn't a race, it was a joke. You have to live here in Chicago to understand that Republicans aren't elected for anything in the city. So Barack could have been a ham sandwich and would have beaten Alan Keyes.  Oh, yeah, and I remember when he said he wouldn't run for president.
A must read artical Titled "The Haloed One" Florida St Pete Times by Bill Maxwell {an African American} Feb. 24th          . A real eye opener on Obama and what he's doing to get votes.
I think that Barack and Michelle Oboma are both  courageous and patriotic. It takes a lot of courage to enter into the cess pool of politics and be subjected to all the personal attacks they face every day. You really have to love this county to put yourselves throught these vile, vicious attacks. The campaign had been pretty much the usual mud slinging until after the last debate. Hillary Clinton's dirty politics put out the picture of Barack Obama, but that can be expected from her. Then the Republicans  had that malicious, venomous shock jock (Cunniham) warm up for the McCain rally, of coures McCain  apologies several times which maked all the Republicans mad at him. Rush Limbaugh defends Cunniham and accuses McCain of destroying the Republician Party. I Just wanted to say "YOU GO!" John McCain and do all of us a favor and destroy that brood of vipers.
to ep-ny - you need to try to correct your spelling before you try to put down the Obamas.  Your piece was so poorly written that no one would probably know what your point is anyway.
Fear bomb? What about the delegates who are being pressured to switch sides because they are black and support Clinton?...The supporters who have been told that they will appear to be an "Uncle Tom" or will be the one who stands in the way of, according to Jesse Jackson Jr., "..a black man getting in the White House..."  What about the "race bomb?"
Ok, let's see if this actually posts this time...

Wow, thank you Sunny, nv for your words.  I am a 27 year old African American and a recent veteran of the U.S. Military.  It fills my heart with pride that people would even so greatly consider a President of his (and my own) decent.  It makes me feel proud to see people from different backgrounds coming together and interacting well among each other (day to day, not just to elect someone).  The world truly is an ugly place and we all have a lot of hurdles to overcome.  The problem is not with members of a certain race.  The problem is with individuals.  I want more than anything, to see people love one another and for no one to be racially biased against each other for any reason.  We have all had negative situations in our lives and other bad things are going to happen as well.  (This is due to the nature of "sin", but I won't even begin to cover that topic today).  In any event, I think Senators Clinton and Obama have good things to bring to the table, but I do wish Hillary would spend more time speaking intelligently on what she intends to change instead of showing the bad side of her character by repeatedly attempting to make Obama look bad.  He is no angel I'm sure, but she might want to stop berating him and trying to change people's perception.  Although they would both likely be good for the country, I think Barack will have a far greater influence on an international scale because of his character and outlook on things, so I think he would be a better President.  Either way, I want to see a better America, but that all starts with us as individuals!  Oh, and as someone else said in an earlier post, you can put me down as an Obamaniac.  = )
Here, Here Lori from WI. I find it interesting that the African American Sen Obama supporters are the ones playing the "race" card in order to get their man the nomination, and yet when Sen Clinton tries to play the "gender" card, they get slammed by Sen Obama's supporters.  Talk about a Teflon candidate. His surrogates seem to be able to say whatever they want, play the race card with impunity, avoid the specifics of any issue and still the Obamanation can slam, slur, and otherwise oppress Sen. Clinton and her supporters with no consequences.  This is the face of "Change we can Believe In", Change for the sake of change can mean going backwards rather than forward, Progress (change that moves us forward as a nation) means ignoring both race and gender and voting on the ISSUES that affect ALL Americans.  I'm still waiting for someone to talk about PROGRESS.
Deborah, you're right...I find the whole dynamic is as interesting as it is frightening. It is exposing an ugliness and a double standard that negates any "hope" of progress but rather "promises" enormous steps backwards...
