Poll: McCain looking good in FL

Posted: Thursday, February 28, 2008 12:57 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC’s Domenico Montanaro
McCain leads both Obama and Clinton in potential general-election match ups with either candidate in the all-important swing state of Florida, according to a Mason-Dixon poll out today.

McCain leads Obama 47%-37% and Clinton 49%-40%. The Arizona senator leads the Democrats across the board. About 80% of Republicans are behind McCain. Only 66% of Democrats are behind Obama and 72% are backing Clinton in one-one-one match-ups with McCain. Currently, 17% of Democrats indicate that in a match up with Obama, they'd support McCain; 16% say so in a match up with Clinton. Seventeen percent of Dems also say they are undecided in a match up with Obama; 13% say so with regard to McCain-Clinton. Those numbers though could be a reflection of McCain being the presumptive nominee and Obama and Clinton still engaged in a fight for the nomination.

Floridian Democrats also weighed in on whether and/or how their delegation should be seated at the national convention -- 28% said the state party should hold another Democratic primary or caucus; 24% believe the delegation should be seated, according to the Jan. 29th primary; 15% say “the Florida Democratic Party knowingly violated the national party rules, so it should accept the penalty”; 13% favor a delegation that is split evenly between Clinton and Obama; and 20% say they aren’t sure.

Donna and Kevin from Florida, may I ask why you'll never vote for Obama. He and Hillary have almost identical policy positions. I would even imagine a Clinton or an Obama administration looking ver similiar?  What's the deal?
Three new polls were released from Texas today, two of which show a comfortable Obama lead: http://thecampaigndiaries.blogspot.com/2008/02/obama-outraises-clinton-in-february.html
I agree with so many of the comments.  Obama has not had an opportunity to campaign in Florida.  What I find distressing is that 16-17% of the Florida Democrats will vote for McCain.  Haven't they learned anything in the last seven years?  Many of the Right do not like McCain, but they will vote for him over Obama and Hillary.  Where is their loyalty and sportsmanship?
One battleground state down, just a couple more to go. Then Obama can go back to doing what ever he does in the Senate.
The next President is either Hillary or McCain...  Obama will never win.  There are many democrats like me who would never vote for him.  Democrats need to stop being so stupid and stop doing what the media tells them to do.  That is why we will lose in November if Obama is the nomination.  How can people be a Hillary supporter one day and switch because of "momentum".  Think for yourself democrats Think for the good of the party and good for the country.  Hillary is good for the country Obama is not!!
Hillary supporters that are saying they will switch to McCain in the General election if Obama is the nominee are pissing all over everything Senator Clinton stands for. Those who would be doing this out of spite are a detriment to the process and to our country - McCain stands for nothing Mrs Clinton advocates. And those who would do this because they feel Senator Obama has no qualifications have not been paying attention (he has a longer record of public service than Senator Clinton).
I have been hearing threats like that posited by kevin,fl a lot, and I have to respond - because this is the kind of mind set that will have horrible implications for our country.

Any Hillary or Barack supporters who would vote for McCain out of spite because their candidate did not get the nomination better think long and hard about what that vote will mean.

Obama and Clinton have nearly identical positions on the issues. There is no logical reason to support Hillary if she get the nomination, but not Barack if He gets it or vice versa.

I was an Edwards supporter, and I thought about writing in Edwards on the ballot (which would essentially be a vote for McCain) if he did not get the nomination. Then I looked at the issues and implications of a McCain Presidency. Just one example, the next President will likely appoint two, and very concievably more Supreme Court Justices. If the court sees even ONE more conservative justice, it will impact the course of our country and its laws for generation. If you have any doubt about how profoundly the Supreme Court can impact the course of the country - look at the positive impact of the Warren Supreme Court (when Earl Warren was the Chief Justice) and how those decisions resonate today - nearly 40 years later...a Conservative / Corporate leaning Supreme Court is a scary prospect to say the least...and that is just ONE of the MANY reasons NOT to vote for McCain.

I now support Obama but I have complete confidence in the abilities of Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. Either would have an enormous task in front of them - and either would bring the change we so urgently need in this country after 8 years of Bush rule.
I have been saying all along that the Republicans and Right leaning Independents who are voting for Obama now, will be voting for McCain in the General election.  We will lose this election again and I hope the media and people like Ed Shultz accept responsibility for what's going to happen.  Obama has only won true Democrats votes in about 5-10 states.  Hillary ususally wins true Democratic voters.  This is the problem that Democrat primaries and caucuses allowing Republicans and Independents to vote and give us a nominee that most Democrats don't want.  That is the issue that needs to be resolved for future elections.

To all those people in Florida and Michigan who are angry over the primaries, don't be mad at the candidates or the national party. Be upset with your state democratic leaders who decided to move up your primary knowing the consequence would be "no delegates". This was made very clear at the beginning and party officials in the state and the candidates understood that.

Delegates shouldn't be awarded in states where no one campaigned. Hillary supporters wouldn't want them seated if Obama won them. Lets stick to the rules people or have a new primary.
Obama was running phone ads in FL. Hillary won FL. Hillary will be President.
Domenico...is it possible for you to get re-assigned at NBC?  Your articles here in First Read are completely non-sensical and inane.  Once a week you seem to post something, usually midday, that is totally useless.
Christian,
When was it that Hillary ever got positive press?
Your ignornace is showing...Drink some more Obama koolaid...You should be alright

Does it really matter? After the people in this country voted for Bush- TWICE. I have lost faith in the sensibility of this nation. I predict a GOP landslide. They could run Huckabee and win. This country is screwed.
I live in Florida and did hear Obama ads on the radio.
So whomever doesn't think he tried to act like the sanke in the grass that he is...is WRONG

None of the Dems campaigned here. Florida has gone red the last two elections, but that's not a sure thing. Remember, it took Bush and his buddy Katherine Harris to call the 2000 election. And check out the I-4 corridor: purple as we can get. Florida isn't a sure thing for either party.
I'm backing Hillary Clinton, but I, too, will vote for McCain if Obama wins the Dem nomination, even if Hillary asks us not to.  This is a critical time in our nation's history, and I'm just not ready to hand things over to the new kid on the block.

Don, just write Hillary in on the ballot, that is your vote.  It is a vote that gets counted!  The exit poll answer is I VOTED FOR HILLARY!

Only the unintelligent and arrogant, would vote for McCain instead Obama out of spite.  God Bless America

Obama is the man look at the record.
Give me a break--

A debate is a battle of words--writing and taking notes are part of the process. As far as Hillary looking at Obama--she looks like a love-sick school girl admiring her hero (which is probably true but she won't admit it.)  Alas, Obama deserves better than your sniviling ridicule, for he has been truly gallant in this whole campaign.  Afterall, when someones name has been in the mud as much as Hillary's name has. . . well let's just say that he has been above all of Hillary's crap slinging.

Check out the record!

The following information gathered from the Library of Congress on the Legislative experience Junior Senator Hillary Clinton and Junior Senator Barack Obama. Please Feel free to check these records for yourself and draw your own conclusion.

Senator Clinton, who has served only one full term, which is 6 years and another year campaigning, has authored and passed 20 twenty pieces of legislation in her term of six years into law. These bills can be found at (wwwhomas.loc.gov).  Senator Clinton has passed.

(5) Name courthouse after James L. Watson.

Only five of Clinton's bills are, more substantive.

(17) Pay for city projects in response to 9/11
(18) Assist landmine victims in other countries.
(19) Assist family caregivers in accessing affordable respite care.
(20) Designate part of the National Forest System in Puerto Rico as protected in the wilderness preservation system.

She has a nice list, but note that these are The Fact's straight from the Senate Record; Therefore, it is not made up.

Now, It is time to post Senator Obama's record from the Library of Congress.I have to mention that Senator Obama's list is too substantive, one is coalesced to categorize. Since its alot, remember you can go to the Library of Congress website, and check it out yourself, but I am just summarizing his first 8 months.

During Senator Obama's first 8 eight months of elected service he sponsored over 820 bills.

He introduced 233 bills regarding healthcare reform,
125 bills on poverty and public assistance,
112 bills on crime fighting,
97 economic bills,
60 human rights and anti-discrimination bills,
21 ethics reform bills,
15 gun control,
6 veterans affairs and many others.
In his first year in the U.S. Senate, he authored 152 bills and co-sponsored another 427. These included:
(1)the Coburn-Obama Government Transparency Act of 2006 that became LAW,
(2)The Lugar-Obama Nuclear Non-proliferation and Conventional Weapons Threat Reduction Act that became LAW, (3)The Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act that passed the Senate,
(4)The 2007 Government Ethics Bill that became LAW,
(5)The Protection Against Excessive Executive Compensation Bill that is in committee just to name a few.

In all since he entered the U.S. Senate, Senator Obama has written 890 bills and co-sponsored another 1096. An impressive record, for someone who supposedly has no legislative record.  Read the facts and not emotion.
Primary turnout means nothing in the general election. ZERO NADA!  Because 50% of likely Democrat voters turn out for primaries versus 15 or 20% of likely Republican voters means NOTHING.  Republicans have historically participated in primaries at low rates because of the winner take all aspect of our caucuses and primaries.  Nice try Dems; but you are NOMINATING a person that is unelectable...OBAMA!
There may be enough washed up old vets still fighting vietnam who will put him over the top there
God help us if we have 4 years of McCain, Can you possibly phathom hearing this man talk for 4-8 years

I feel bad for Hillarty but its apparent the country REALLY wants change not more of the same

VOTE OBAMA
No real surprise here. Florida is key for the next President to win. The only chance the Democrats have of winning Florida is Clinton. Florida would never go for Obama.
I am a Democrat, and I am proud to be a Democrat. The Republicans are in for a rude awakening when Barack Obama beats McCain next November. These polls do not take in to account the record voter turnout for the Democrats. If you go to www.rasmussenreports.com you will see that Barack Obama has a 7% lead over Mcain in Colorado, he has a 12% lead over McCain in Nevada, and a 13% lead in New Hampshire. Barack Obama also leads by 15% in Minnesota, by 9% in Oregon, and by 10% in Pennsylvania. Remember that 2000 presidential election where our U.S. Supreme Court elected Bush with a 5 to 4 vote without even having a state mandated recount in Florida? The Democrats need to unite so that does not happen again. Let's stop this right wing and conservative crazyness of the Republican agenda by getting to the polls and VOTE FOR BARACK OBAMA IN NOVEMBER!
Once regular Americans and not the fringe worked up in the Democratic primaries see Obama for what he is - one of the most liberal Presidential candidates in history, the landslide will favor John McCain.

Obama = waving the white flag against Al Quaeda in Iraq.

Obama = higher taxes that will reduce investment, slow the economy, and put middle class Americans out of work.

Obama = inexperience and shortsightedness when dealing with foreign nations who want to act against American interests that will put Americans lives at risk.

Obama = socialized medicine that will increase the national debt at a rate never seen before, will create shortages of medical providers, and will reduce innovation and advancement in medical science.

Obama = welfare like social programs that will further prevent inner city minorities and rural citizens from breaking the shackles of government dependence and having the opportunity to prosper.

Obama is recycling failed liberal policies that favor big government over the power of freedom and liberty.

Obama will clear the skies, feed the hungry, rid us of all the gators and pythons.

Just wait, Florida!
I too will vote for McCain if Obama gets the nomination. Writing in Hillary negates the vote and can still give Obama the election so that is not an option. We cannot stand on principle any longer. We Hillary supporters must unite and stop this guy despite how the Democratic party will force Hillary to priase Obama at the convention. This is no longer in Hillary's hands. It is in our hands and we need to vote for McCain. I suspect at least 30% of Hillary supporters will cross party lines Nov 4th
and give McCain the election. There is no way in hell Obama with that crossover. This will be our way of sticking it to the media the way they stuck it our girl!
"THAT HAS NO BASIS to me because Obama has never campaigned in Florida, let him campaign there for 1 week and then show me some results!!"

Actually, you're wrong.  Obama hasn't campaigned much in Pennsylvania and he's not doing so poorly there.  The point is that the demographics of Florida are dead wrong for Obama.  The Cubans don't much care for him and the military vote is heavily leaned toward McCain.  Then there's the Jews who Lieberman will rally for McCain and so on.  I don't think Florida is going to be a good state for Obama.
I would like to know from all of you Democrats who say you will vote to continue the outrageous policies of the last 7 years if your candidate is not the nominee, why you call yourself Democrats?  Does it have anything to do with believing in co-operation rather than competition?  Inclusion rather than exclusion? Helping the less fortunate have a better life rather than helping wealthy corporations get more profits?  Preserving the principles of the Constitution rather eviscerating it?  Restoring the rule of law rather than manipulating it or sidestepping it?  With two candidates who have very similar agendas, you would choose to continue down the precarious road we are on, rather than vote for someone who is a strong proponent of Democratic Principles; I don't get it.  Who are you people and what do you believe in?
To all of you defending Obama and claiming that Obama never campaigned in Florida. So this is why he is the weakest link in this poll: Where do you think Florida is? in the midst of nowhere somewhere in the Pacific living in the stone age? You are insulting the intelligence and knowledge of the Floridians. So please find another reason to justify this poll.
It is absolutely idiotic for anyone to suggest they would vote for Mcain if they supported Hillary and Obama wins. It is painfully obvious that Hillary's comments about Obama have hurt the democrats. Wake up people the issues we care about are fought for by both Clinton and Obama. If we care about the war and the middle class casting a vote for Mcain because we supported the other democratic candidate that didn't win is silly. We have to be together. If you vote for Mcain because Hillary/Obama wins or loses then you don't care about the issues you care about the man or woman and you are giving the Republicans the race. Do the right thing. I support Obama and I have made the comment that if Obama looses then I will support Mcain, but that is stupid and I retract that. I will support the Democratic candidate because remember what's important;GETTING RID OF THE BUSH POLICY THATS IT!!!!!!!!!!!!
Florida has been treading Republican for a while, even Clinton didn't win it in 1992...

McCain will get demolished in CA, NY, IL, MA, (and a few others) whether it's Obama or Clinton....Obama would likely be stronger against that old man McCain in states like MO, NM, CO, & IO.....

Obama should absolutely trounce McCain, who basically offers a 3rd. Bush term...But some people vote Republican, even if its against their own self-intersts......
Those of you that say that you will not vote for Obama if he wins the nomination make me sick.  Same goes to those of you who support Obama but will not vote for Clinton if she were to win the nomination.  We have the best candidates and EITHER ONE tops McCain.  He offers nothing but a continuation of the mess we've been in for 8 LONG YEARS.
Also, just because Hillary has more experience than Obama does not maker her a better candidate.  Where was all of her experience when she voted for the Iraq war?????  When the time came to stand up for what you truly believe in, she LET US DOWN!  We need someone in the White House who will stand up to people when wrong is being done!  That is what Barack did!  NOT HILLARY.  Hillary only stood up to Bush when it was Ok to....when people really started questioning the war...oh yeah, then all of her experience came back to help her.  Get real people....get over your fears about Barack.....He's tough...He's got guts.....and he beats John McCain hands down!
Bottom line...we need to get behind our Democratic candidates and show some unity!  Republicans are switching over to Barack...even some prominent people in the Republican community have endorsed him!  Get fired up Democrats!  We can do this, but we need to do this TOGETHER.
If Obama wins the nomination:
New Jersey, New York, and California come into play for the Republicans.  McCain has a shot in all three of those states if Clinton is not the nominee.

Obama can have Kansas.  Congrats on turning a red state blue Barack.  It will be hard to win without California though.
''The hen is the wisest of all animals. For she does not cackle until after the egg is laid''

Abraham Lincoln[R-Ill]
The first job of a President is to keep us safe.
It has now been more than six years since September 11, 2001, and we still have not made defeating the people that attacked us our number one priority.  We have diverted resources into a distraction in Iraq that became a quagmire.  There will be endless debate about the "surge", but the surge is already drawing down as we speak.  What comes next?

What is John McCain's plan for victory in Afghanistan, or does he just plan on fighting in Iraq while nuclear Pakistan slips away?

There are real threats in the world.  McCain, Bush, and Clinton all chose not to confront the real threats, and instead to go poking snake holes to see if there were dragons inside.

I trust Obama to win in Afghanistan, to keep Pakistan on our side, and to let the Iraqi politicians know we won't be their bodyguards forever.  More Americans have died in Iraq than on September 11, and our leaders chose that tragedy.

Moreover, I trust him to make the right decision next time, whether it's to read a memo title "Al Qaeda Determined to Strike" or to reject panicking and attacking the wrong country at the wrong time.
I find it utterly amazing that so many Clinton supporters claim media bias as the reason for her faltering campaign.  Nobody but Barack Obama convinced me that he deserves my support.  Give us a little credit, eh?
"Of course Florida is going to vote Republican.
Democrats there, and in Michigan have been disenfranchised by their own party. "

Funny thing about Florida - it goes republican no mattter what the vote, especially when they have an unindicted felon like Ratalleen Harris posing as Sec. of State.

I wouldn't count on the population of two states reacting in some sort of hissy fit, J.
Why should Florida change and hold a fair election? In the end it's probably one of maybe three states John "Bomb Iran" McCan't will win.
For the following reasons this poll should not matter or be looked at: this is a silly poll since the neither the Democrat or Republican parties have officially chosen their nominee.  The November election is still several month away.  It doesn't mention any third party candidates such as Nader.  We don't know if Ron Paul will run on the Libertarian ticket again.  We haven't see either candidate campaign in any location in Florida recently either.
TO ALL HILLARY SUPPORTERS...WE NEED TO CREATE A MOVEMENT AND VOTE FOR MCCAIN IN THE GENERAL ELECTION AS PROTEST TO THE SHAMELESS WAY THE MEDIA JACKED HILLARY.
Don't come around with this crap about the jews ! Obama just spoke to the Jewish people and they are backing him. As far as voting for McCain if you don't like Obama, you can tell that to the thousands of parents that will have their kids going off in a draft. I have 2 grandsons of draft age and I wouldn't vote for McCrazy if you paid me. My daughter worries every day what will become of her sons if this crazy Republican gets in. Something to think about. If you dont have kids that age, I imagine your saying, 'so what!" We just went through almost 8 years with these crazy people, what is wrong with you? I think most of you are racist and don't want to admit it.
I am an "past middle aged" woman living in the South who supports Obama.  I cannot believe the Democrats who say they will vote for McCain if Obama is the nominee.  They apparently like the way things have been the past 8 years under Bush!!
Domenico, You post one positive truthful article, and Obama supporters are upset.

The majority of comments above state what I have been sending in, but not posted.

If a Clinton supporter, votes for McCain in the event Obama is the candidate on the Dem. ticket, it is because they are voting with their conscience.
They have made an intellegent decision to support the best candidate for the presidency, based on experience, accomplishments, foreign policy work and
travel, and an entire adult lifetime (even as a teen helping register voters), showing passion and dedication to helping all Americans have a better life, honestly caring that every single American can have health care, save their homes and jobs.  She has traveled to China to speak for woman's human rights, and traveled to more than 80 foreign countries.  Domenico's article is only reporting polls, but I have family in Florida and in was raised in Michigan where I still have family.  They
are justified to be outraged that they are being disenfranchised by their own party.  IF WE ARE TO BE CALLED THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY, THAN WHAT ABOUT PRACTICING DEMOCRACY.

Both Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama were on the ticket in Florida.  Obama has been give equal and hyped coverage on major TV networks.  Given the coverage has been consistantly negative about Hillary Clinton, the people in Florida still voted
overwhelmingly for her.   CLINTON DID NOT CAMPAIGN THERE.   DO YOU REALLY THINK THAT THE PEOPLE IN FLORIDA DO NOT WATCH TV...THE SENIORS HAVE MORE TIME TO WATCH TV THAN COLLEDGE STUDENTS.  AND BECAUSE IT WAS A PRIMARY, NOT A CAUCUS THEY COULD MAIL IN BALLOTS AND HAVE ALL DAY TO GET TO THE POLLING PLACES, UNLIKE THE CAUCUSES WHICH DO NOT REPRESENT THE MAJORITY OF VOTERS OR THE WILL OF THE PEOPLE IN OUR COUNTRY.  OBAMA GAINED MOMENTUM BECAUSE OF THE CAUCUS STATES.  WASH. STATE ONLY ALLOTED DELEGATES FROM OUR CAUCUS VOTING, WHICH I ATTENDED AND EXPERIENCES FIRST-HAND HOW ILLEGALLY THEY WERE RUN.
NO PROOF OF IDENTY WAS REQUIRED.  I COULD HAVE BEEN FROM ANOTHER STATE, ANOTHER COUNTRY, A FELON, OR SIMPLY RAN OVER FROM THE REPUBLICAN CAUCUS NEXT DOOR, AND VOTED IN THE DEMOCRAT CAUCUS.  NO VERIFICATION HAS OR WILL BE MADE OF THE CAUCUS VOTES, YET OUR PRIMARY VOTES (WHILE NOT COUNTING EXCEPT FOR POPULAR VOTES) ARE SIX TIMES OR MORE REPRESENTATIVE OF THE WILL OF THE VOTER IN THIS STATE.  OVER 600,000 voters voted in the Primary
and the margin is about 5%, while it was 2 to 1 in the caucus.   IF THESE FIGURES ALONE DON'T PROVE THAT THE CAUCUSES ARE MISHMASH, BACKROOM TYPE OF ELECTING A NOMINEE...I DON'T KNOW WHAT DOES.
I can't even get the contact information of the convenor running the caucus I attended from the State Democratic Party to follow up on the irregularities I witnessed.

NOW, CHECK OUT HOW FOX NEWS IS FEATURING DICK MORRIS
AND KARL ROVE.  THEY ARE HIRED BY FOX NEWS TO FINISH THE JOB OF TRASHING HILLARY CLINTON.  WHEN THE REPUBLICANS GET OBAMA AS A NOMINEE, THEN THEY WILL BEGIN TO GO AFTER HIM WITH ALL THE STUFF THE MEDIA
HAS BEEN NEGLECTING TO QUESTION.  IF DEMOCRATES THINK THAT THE REPUBLICANS WHO CROSS-OVER AND VOTED TO GET OBAMA ON THE TICKET ARE GOING TO REMAIN LOYAL TO VOTING DEMOCRAT IN THE FALL, YOU ARE SADLY MISTAKEN.    WE ARE NOW GETTING AN IDEA OF HOW THE VOTERS IN FLORIDA ARE THINKING, SO WAKE UP.

MICHIGAN SHOULD BE THE ONLY STATE TO RE-DO THEIR PRIMARY SINCE OBAMA WAS NOT ON THE TICKET (HE USED POOR JUDGMENT TAKING HIS NAME OFF THE BALLOT).
BUT THEY ARE NOT A CAUCUS STATE, SO THEY MUST HOLD
ANOTHER PRIMARY.  BOTH CANDIDATES CAN HAVE EQUAL CAMPAIGNING TIME IN MICHIGAN.

EVERY STATE MUST HAVE THEIR VOTES COUNTED, OR WE CAN NOT CALL OURSELVES THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY.  THE REPUBLICANS MOVED UP THE DATES, NOT THE DEMOCRATS.
SO IF WE MADE UP STUPID RULES TO NOT COUNT TWO STATES VOTES, THAN WE CAN JUST CORRECT THE MISTAKE AND CHANGE THE RULES.  ISN'T THIS ELECTION ALL ABOUT
CHANGE?

Mollie: I have 2 grandsons of draft age and I wouldn't vote for McCrazy if you paid me.

Mollie, take a deep breath, let it out, and go watch The View, or Oprah, or reruns of Barack's speechs. That should help. Also, there is no draft.
So Obama is behind in a poll 8 months before the actual election. Well seeing how Obama has won many states where he was originally behind in the polls, I doubt that he is at all concerned. McCain is a one trick pony, he has no health care plan that I know of and has openly admitted that he is not qualified to fix the economy. In addition, the one issue he is supposedly "strong" on (Iraq) is an issue where the great majority of Americans disagree with him. Obama will win in such a landslide that the first Reagan win will pale in comparison.
This poll doesn't surprise me in the least.  Florida is filled with people intent on perpetuating the status quo until they die and that is exactly what McCain offers.  I supported McCain in 2000, but after he became GW's lapdog I lost all respect for him.  Obviously, the Ice Queen is out of the running.  Thank God! In fact, I think that Hillary Clinton and John McCain should date since he is so good at sleeping around and Hillary is so good at taking it on chin.
Now if only Obama could get his wife to shut up I might actually think about voting for him.
Errr, Florida has got Republican in the last 2 general elections. Why is this poll a surprise? Too many conservative old people.

National health care will take of that problem. Be offing those old people when they are in their 60's.
