'Muslim' flap stirs al Qaeda message board

Posted: Thursday, February 28, 2008 2:52 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC’s Robert Windrem
The world is indeed flat.

Al Hesbah is one of al Qaeda’s main cyber mouthpieces. It has been cited numerous times by name in official communiqués issued by bin Laden’s terror network, been featured in propaganda films produced on behalf of mujahideen organizations, including al Qaeda.

Its message boards offer key insights into the mindset of al Qaeda supporters and its collective knowledge base.

So those who follow al Qaeda took notice this week when members of the mujahideen took notice of the image of Barack Obama dressed as a Somali elder on the Drudge Report. Evan Kohlmann of Global Terror Alert, and an NBC News terrorism analyst, was among those who watched as the Al Hesbah message board lit up. Al Qaeda sympathizers cited the image as evidence that American political leaders, particularly Hillary Clinton, want to portray Islam as a political negative.

“In this case,” Kohlmann said, “it would appear that the publication of the Obama photo, along with the insinuation of an intended negative political impact from being classified as ‘Muslim,’ has only served to antagonize the ranks of those who admire and support al Qaeda.”

This discussion has been viewed several hundred times on the Al-Hesbah network, Kohlmann adds, and it has been among the top 40 most popular discussions on Al-Hesbah the past three days. Most of the discussions are about events in the Islamic world, particularly the conflict between the West and Islamic militants.

The discussion began with a post from a user apparently from Lebanon or Palestinian territories. He cited a news article (and accompanying photo) with the title, "Hillary Clinton's campaign distributes photos of Obama in Kenyan dress and accuses him of being Muslim." The author then immediately comments afterwards, "May Allah's curse be on all of them."

Almost immediately, users, such as "Abu Omar" and "Abdullah," reply in unison, "May Allah kill them." Another echoes the author's sentiments that "Allah's curse" should be "on all of them."

“Not only are they enraged by the implication that being Muslim is something to be ashamed of,” Kohlmann added, “but moreover, they are nearly equally indignant about the much-rumored notion that Obama (who has repeatedly declared his faith in Christianity and his support for Israel) is somehow in league with them.”

In fact, Kohlmann added, al-Qaeda supporters are so insistent about their hatred for Obama that they have gone as far as to portray him as an "Iranian agent" secretly sent to take over the United States and fight a war against Sunni Muslims.

One user, with a login that suggests Saudi nationality, claimed in his response, "Obama is actually of Persian-Iranian origin. Many of the Persians emigrated to Kenya after the fall of the Persian empire... . We ask Allah to destroy Obama, Kerry, Clinton, America, its allies, and its slaves."

“As far as they are concerned,” Kohlmann said, “there is basically no difference between Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, or even George Bush.”

The Clinton campaign didn't release the embarassing photos -- it's been shown they originated from freerepublic.com
Lol, and the news here is... what?

They forgot to mention John Wayne in their rant of everyone they think Allah ought to smite.
It's irresponsible for MSNBC to post this article that basically states that Haillary distributed this picture, when she flat out denied it.
I think we should all be careful about judging the feelings of the Muslim world based on posts an a message board.

I know for sure that message boards are magnets for the MOST EXTREME viewpoints to be expressed, and the anonymity gives many people FALSE COURAGE to say the most outrageous thing possible just to get attention. . . you know, just like many of the posters here on FIRST READ! :)
Bet you that won't satisfy any of the ignorant posters.
DID any nut job on the als web site check that obama IS a christian >it WONT BE LONG BEFORE THAT CULT OF death IS OVER ITS HARD TO KEEP  CONVINCING YOUNG WITH THIER life ahead of them to blow up when the older dudes stay alive hidden.Funny is hilliary is hated everywhere I bet they sound like the OBAMMAWANNABES on that blog I HATE HILLIARY ,HILLIARY IS A WITCH .WE already know they cant handle a strong women.LOSER ARABS CANT TAKE A JOKE.ISREAL IS THE ONLY DEMOCRACY IN THE MIDDLE EAST.
Once more I urge all candidates running to remember that the end does not justify the means, not in the United States of America.  In this country, liberty is the means and liberty is the ends.  Please remember that when evaluating candidates.

Everything our candidates do now is on the world stage and impacts both the soft power of this Country and our ability to win the hearts and minds of the young people that Al Quaeda wants to recruit.  Please no more of this absurd attempt to denigrate Muslims.  Please no more of this absurd attempt to create fear in the minds of Americans by claiming that Senator Obama (a practicing Christian) is actually a Muslim.  Try and remember that your actions have consequences in the wider world and behave with civility, dignitas and gravitas.

We can change this Country and we can change this world, but we need to remember who we are and what this Country stands for.  We are a decent people.  We are the shining light of freedom for the world.  If all of the candidates remember these simple truths, these problems will not arise in the future.
Well that was a lovely afternoon pick me up.
Shock
Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large numbers!
Hmm, he didn't mention John McCain.  Must mean John had some Manchurian programming while imprisoned in Hanoi, huh?  It's just simple logic.
Boy, Hillary !!

You're in REAL TROUBLE !!
Don't ask us to help you !

It's lucky you're a 'fighter'
One thing all supporters can agree on... al-Qaeda sucks!
WOW again our American Media at their lowest!
News fit to print, I think not! You should be ASHAMED of yourselves.  Are you Americans or fear mongers of the worst kind.  You keep digging this crap up, making it up b/c your beloved Barry need this? Even he would be appalled at your disgusting tabloid crap.
Apparently these Al Qaeda terrorist only see themselves as worthy to be called Muslims.  I guess that they see any American, politician or not, as evil Iranian agent.  They have no concept of American politics and that being called something that you are not can be hateful.

If that is the case that Al Qaeda hates Iran, we should work to "find" pictures that show the leaders of this terrorist hate filled group as worshiping the leader of Iran and wanting to perform things that are considered forbidden which could possibly include having a nice pork loin tender roast.
Obama drop out of this race. You are putting our country in more danger. Hillary did not post that picture, but you are in it. Drop out it is the right thing to do. You have not shown the right judgement in your life to be our president.
Equal opportunity hatred.  Who knew?
Way to go Billary OR McClinton -- whoever brought that issue up!  Now THAT was diplomatic, wasn't it?  Is this the type of "preparations" you intend to take before any international negotiations?

We are a nation of immigrants, and many religions.  Get your bus out of the ditch!

Get her off the stage of America, please.
AND

WRONG

on Hillary denying her camp did this...she said "not to my knowledge."  That is NOT a denial that they did it.
Guess the site is al Qaeda’s version of RUSS and SEAN. Sounds just like the talk Rush has been spouting.
"Ready on Day One"?  I think not.
Drop out Obama,

Drop off the face of the planet you ignorant waste of space.  HRC supporters are starting to remind me of one of my favorite movies back in college: "Dumb and Dumber"

Get real.  Or get LOST.
Hooo boy...every detractor seems to be painting Obama as anything but who he actually is.

To quote the Cheshire Cat:

"We're all mad here.  I'm mad...you're mad..."
It's so sad that it takes al-Qaeda to dismiss the foolish rumors of Sen. Obama being a Muslim.  The Republicans will now have to run their campaign on actual issues and not smears.

OBAMA, 2008!
Is this the fear card? They have wanted to kill us from the beginning. Obama is going to unite the world?Does it look like it now? This wont endear us to our allies in any way and wont make us new ones.I believe Obama or his suporters put out this pic. It was in a newspaper but I think they figured to blame Clinton and get Farrakhan off front page. Obamas wife tried little bit ago to stir up stuff with they will try fear. I dont think that went as she thought now this?? Timeing is funny. What is this piece supposed to do? I dont see anything new in it.Guess we should get rid of Obama so Osama will settle down. You can back out Obama for good of country.
Nice to know web forums are our news source, basically some guy posted a jerk remark and 50 people quoted him. NEVER SAW THAT BEFORE

for life baby
Since our own news media jumped to the incorrect conclusion, which certianly played a role in the terrorists jumping to the same conclusion, I think that the news media needs to apologize, publically, to Sen. Clinton.  Otherwise, they may have put an innocent woman's life in danger, something to consider seriously after the recent murder of a woman Muslim leader, Benazir Bhutto.

I noticed that program after program on your channel didn't hesitate to spend long segments accusing Sen. Clinton of having been behind the distribution of that photo.

Would it honestly be too much to ask that you folks now let veiwers know that you jumped the gun, before you possibly contribute to a tragedy in the form of some lunatic terrorist killing, or trying to kill, Sen. Clinton?  It seems to me to be the very least you could do.

See how this ignorant stunt by those trying to smear Sen. Obama has backfired and stirred up a faction of insanity that needs real incitement to push their message of death, destruction and hate?

I'm so glad Sen. Obama has not acknowledge this lunacy that was cooked up by those naysayers and fear-mongers among political parties snarling over the presidential bone with those scraps of meat called "entitlement" and "exeperience" dangling off of it so precariously.  Seems outsiders don't view Sen. Obama in the same differentiating light that some of his own countrymen (and women) are so eager to believe.
Why have your station said anything NAFTA and the Canadian Connection which involves Obama?

Hate is hate no matter which way you turn it. These people represent a minority in the Muslim religion. One thing that does need to happen in this country is to stop condemning the Muslim religion as a whole. Fundamentalism is fundamentalism no matter which God you pray to and it breeds a narrow minded focus on the world through the eyes of hate. This is yet another "accidental" release by the Clinton camp. We need a president who can bring people together not continue these dumb notions that condemn entire people or religion based on stereotypes or fear. We need to strengthen our image and position in the Muslim community and do our part to keep the young muslims away from these fundamentalist sects.
Why didn't they condemn John McCain?!

Oh my god!  It's not Obama!  The insider is John McCain!

Huh?  Hillary and the rest of Old Washington are the ones who are putting everyone at risk.  Look what fear-mongers are doing to some of you people.

We Gotchyer Back, Barack!
I got it . They heard Obama was going to make a movie about his royal self and they want a part in it too. you go Obama and Hillary will lead the country
With a name like Hussein, and dreams of being president, not real good judgement to dress up like that was it?
Hillary did not release that picture, the associated press did. Who gives a crap what Bin laden says, and why are they so bothered do they like BARRACK HUSSEIN OBAMA.
First of all -
I don't think that anyone said that Hillary's camp distributed the photo -
Second of all -
The media all along has put words in her mouth - and in the mouths of all of the people who RIGHTFULLY voice concerns over the issues to do with Obama AND THE OTHER CANDIDATES!

In a day and time where the media has such incredible influence, not only as the gatekeepers anymore, but as the ones who set the pace of the race for the White House, the pace of the war on terror, etc... IT IS INCREASINGLY IMPORTANT TO REALIZE that the implications and the freely flowing views of MANY that are displayed for the entire world to see - creating not only a global marketplace, but a transparent one that is now so powerful as to sway the concepts and opinions of virtually anything and anyone - are what shape the future of this nation.

Perception is not always reality, however, in a transparent global marketplace like the one we have today, perception is everything. That is one of the concerns that I think many people have with Obama's background...not that he IS or ISN'T muslim, but that the perception of him as a sympathizer, by not only our people but abroad as well, is what is so dangerous. Clearly, the entire world is forming opinions and plotting actions based on the perceptions portrayed by the media. That is dangerous for Hillary in this case, as she MAY not have been behind the circulation of this photo, but now muslims abroad will have a problem with her based on what the headlines read.
chuck, richmond, tx: '...Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large numbers!
-- where Obama seals the deal...'

I've been saying THAT about the Clinton campaign for MONTHS !!!
It's irresponsible for MSNBC to post this article that basically states that Haillary distributed this picture, when she flat out denied it.
Rochester, NY (Sent Thursday, February 28, 2008 3:04 PM)

Yeah, but the Clintons deny a lot of things.  Remember the impeachment?
It always amazes me how tough al Queada members think they are, shouting insults, threatening the US and others, acting like they are somehow superior in their beliefs to everyone else. If they were so tough and wanted a real fight why don't they come out and fight instead of hiding in caves and other places while challenging the free-world on the internet. You guys name the place and time, we'll send our best against yours, one on one, and then we'll see how tough you guys really are. Or do we have to continue to put up with your big mouths while you hide until you decide its time to come out and kill people including women and children using car bombs that are detonated from safe distances. Death to America, what a bunch of bull. You might be able to kill a few folks with your cowardly terrorists tactics but if you think you can take America down being the hideout whimps you are you must be drinking plenty of kool-aide for lack of something better in your hide outs. Why don't you al Queada members go take a long vacation somewhere and see if you can somehow grow some balls.
So, is there a point to any of this?
I would think that they would be more afraid of Barack Obama than Clinton or McCain.  Al Qaeda depends heavily on a certain amount of toleration from Muslims who are less extreme.  As a man of faith and a candidate of unity, Obama is a natural to appeal to Muslim moderates who are not as fixated on America-hating or Christian-hating as al Qaeda wishes they were.  His Muslim name and heritage are as likely to hurt him as to help in that endeavor, but it's got to be done, and he's certainly better positioned than either of the other candidates to do it.
I'm not sure which are more ignorant, the viewpoints expressed on the Al Hesbah website or those here on "first read". "Drop out Obama?" -great idea, you're correct, we SHOULD let fear dictate our country's path.
What's the news here? These radicals are in agreement that they hate the US government, regardless of who is in office. Senator Obama has stated time and time again that as commander-in-chief he will do whatever it takes to hunt them down.
AL-QAEDDA BETTER WATCH OUT CAUSE HILLARY RODHAM CLINTON WILL GET MAD AND MEAN ON THEM BECAUSE SHE HAS A POWERFUL STRONG VAGINA AND IS A WOMEN
This is what hatred does. Divide and you will create anger. Good job to all those who promote fear and hatred against Obama and keep on lying about his background. You will take us very far.
nashville-fan: A lot of people have said it isnt being Muslim but not being honest is the problem. Couple of his supporters on here have over time said he was to young to matter. I agree but say that dont figure we are all so stupid. If i can see him all over the MuslimBridges.org site do you think they cannt?
Nashville_fan and Kim have it right ... The Al Quaeda are the extremists of the Muslim religion.  We need to exercise judgment and not paint all Muslim's with the same brush.  Unfortunately, some of the posters here have been very hateful in their remarks about Muslims in general.  Try to remember that your attitudes are watched world-wide, and everyone who reads them does not understand that you do not speak for all Americans.
Thank you for the reminder - it's a small world after all...
IF Obama was ever a Muslim as a child and converted to Christianity as an adult, does that mean that he is in contempt of the Muslim faith?
It doesn't matter that Clinton didn't release the picture because that little piece of misinformation  has already done it's damage.  Who says those old political tricks don't have a place in Obama's new political order?

Lady in El Paso is right on....irresponcible and totally consistent with MSNBC's bias.
