'Muslim' flap stirs al Qaeda message board

Posted: Thursday, February 28, 2008 2:52 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC’s Robert Windrem
The world is indeed flat.

Al Hesbah is one of al Qaeda’s main cyber mouthpieces. It has been cited numerous times by name in official communiqués issued by bin Laden’s terror network, been featured in propaganda films produced on behalf of mujahideen organizations, including al Qaeda.

Its message boards offer key insights into the mindset of al Qaeda supporters and its collective knowledge base.

So those who follow al Qaeda took notice this week when members of the mujahideen took notice of the image of Barack Obama dressed as a Somali elder on the Drudge Report. Evan Kohlmann of Global Terror Alert, and an NBC News terrorism analyst, was among those who watched as the Al Hesbah message board lit up. Al Qaeda sympathizers cited the image as evidence that American political leaders, particularly Hillary Clinton, want to portray Islam as a political negative.

“In this case,” Kohlmann said, “it would appear that the publication of the Obama photo, along with the insinuation of an intended negative political impact from being classified as ‘Muslim,’ has only served to antagonize the ranks of those who admire and support al Qaeda.”

This discussion has been viewed several hundred times on the Al-Hesbah network, Kohlmann adds, and it has been among the top 40 most popular discussions on Al-Hesbah the past three days. Most of the discussions are about events in the Islamic world, particularly the conflict between the West and Islamic militants.

The discussion began with a post from a user apparently from Lebanon or Palestinian territories. He cited a news article (and accompanying photo) with the title, "Hillary Clinton's campaign distributes photos of Obama in Kenyan dress and accuses him of being Muslim." The author then immediately comments afterwards, "May Allah's curse be on all of them."

Almost immediately, users, such as "Abu Omar" and "Abdullah," reply in unison, "May Allah kill them." Another echoes the author's sentiments that "Allah's curse" should be "on all of them."

“Not only are they enraged by the implication that being Muslim is something to be ashamed of,” Kohlmann added, “but moreover, they are nearly equally indignant about the much-rumored notion that Obama (who has repeatedly declared his faith in Christianity and his support for Israel) is somehow in league with them.”

In fact, Kohlmann added, al-Qaeda supporters are so insistent about their hatred for Obama that they have gone as far as to portray him as an "Iranian agent" secretly sent to take over the United States and fight a war against Sunni Muslims.

One user, with a login that suggests Saudi nationality, claimed in his response, "Obama is actually of Persian-Iranian origin. Many of the Persians emigrated to Kenya after the fall of the Persian empire... . We ask Allah to destroy Obama, Kerry, Clinton, America, its allies, and its slaves."

“As far as they are concerned,” Kohlmann said, “there is basically no difference between Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, or even George Bush.”

WOW, the MSM starting to become the Mouthpeice of AQI. Fear this, Fear that, the Boogeyman, jason, mickey mouse, tazmanian devil.

The American Main Stream Media,  The New AQI Mouthpiece. Who woulda guessed that was gonna happen this afternoon.

Folk's, the Establishment is Scared, they are about to lose their Stranglehold on the way thing's are done in America. This thread is the PROOF!!!!!!!!!
See, I was right.
Poor, poor Hillary supporters. Now even the enemy is scoring points by dumping on her. It must be hard for HillFans. For so many years they had a free ride with the main stream media. But now, someone new shows up, and Hillary is thrown out like yesterdays leftovers. How the (perceived) mighty have fallen.
Have you ever been on rightwing.com's message board? We have our morons in this country too.
I'm no AQ sympathizer, but the fact that Obama has been attacked by right-wing, fear-mongering so-called Americans for his name, is among the many reasons why they hate us so much. We demonize and show such dis-respect and contempt for all that we legitimately have reason to fear and more especially what this corrupt administration tells us to fear. I want Bin Laden dead as much as anybody and would have supported Bush in that effort, but he dropped the ball and continues to make a mockery of the highest position in the world. All I'm sayin' is to stop with the fear-mongering of the muslim religion and focus on the problems at hand, they are large and they are many. We tried the whole demonizing our fellow citizens when folks spoke out against the war in the early stages only to see them vindicated by NOT finding wmd's and NO links between AQ and Saddam. Let's keep our eyes on the ball America and not let the extremists in this country distract us as we select our next leader.

Obama in '08
The very fact that Obama is doing so well is really sifting the gold from the dirt.  The spectulations raised about Obama's religion and links to supposed radicals are not magically falling from the sky.  They have to come from the people most threatend by him and his abilities.  I believe this dirt has come from one group that is digging as close to hades as possible in hopes of finding a miracle.  The last time I checked hades was not in the miracle business.

This dirt has now fanned the flames of American hatred once again.  How is this a demonstration of superior exerience in foreign policy?  First it was the comment about Putin having no soul(his come back was priceless), now this.  At this rate America will never be able repair foreign relations.  If one really cared about improving foreign relations they would stop the whining, finger pointing, and fearmongering, and quietly step down.

What Obama is trying to achieve for this country is golden.  But it won't happen though if we all have to keep wading through the dirt.
Imagine that...The idea of being "accused" of being a muslim is upsetting to people. You can dismiss people for overreacting, and "May Allah's curse be on all of them." is certainly an overreaction, but the ignorance of those among us who would classify being muslim as some sort of crime is pretty sad.
Once again Domenico you start something completely off the wall.  Hey NBC brass, get this guy suspended.
Who give a damn what A-Q think, right?  They're the bad guys afterall.

BUT, what about the other Muslims... the one's we need (I, know, we dont need anybody) or want to be our allies and supporters?  How do you suppose they view this ridcule?

I guess it is just easier to lump verybody into one basket and say 'screw them if they cant take a joke'.

Am I right?
So, Al Qaeda hates Iran too? Who knew...
Thank you for that point [Nashville_fan], now I don't have to make it.  But keep in mind that F-R said it offered "insights" ...

I think it would be fair to say that F-R offers insights to the feelings of Clintons and Obama supporters--one angry and the other obsessed, respectively.  Sadly, I cannot seem to type anything outrageous enough anymore to garner an iota of attention.  It's like a plea for help really.

"May Allah's curse be on all of them."
Hillary and every other person exploited the character of Obama. They used his picture and his name to produce fear and hate. They make it look like americans are truly racist, by using religion. Thanks Hillary, for putting us in danger. Obama was born into a multi-cultural family and that is a plus to be able to talk to other people.

But, once again Hillary's tactics prove to be dangerous to all americans just because she wants to win an election!!!!!!Obama "08"
I guess the absence of McCain in all this hatred chanting and posting must signify that he is a friend of these mujahideen organizations. May allah bless this war-mongering old coot.
MSNBZZZZZZZ what is with the post at 3 25 by bionic beaver you would censure me if I put something wrong like that in a post on OBAMA but somehow that slips by you THAT is shameful.
Have you not noticed that most of the press on this site today is pro Hillary?  It seems MSNBC has shifted to really promoting her.  Perhaps because the prospect of a Democratic Party self destructing would increase readership?  I dont think any side was served by posting this fear mongering, especially MSNBC, responsible journalism?
ahhhh, HELLO! The 911 hijackers were all islamic extremeists, what part about that doesn't everyone understand!
Its laugahable that al qaeda's tender little feelings have been hurt. STOP FLYING AIRPLANES INTO BUILDINGS AND CAR BOMBING AMERICAN G.I.'s YOU MORONS!
Then we'll stop thinking of you as terrorist thugs.
Until then, EAT SNOT AND DIE YOU MOTHERLESS BASTARDS! *****USA #1, GOD BLESS AMERICA!*****
Obama needs to talk to these people so his speech will bring about world peace. If he left now  we may all be saved. What a hero!!The light will shine ,like he said to give credit, in the beginning races. They will have an epithany and lay down there arms and the world will smile on our own Obama.I think he should go right away.We are behind you obama!  go man.go
IF you think having AL QUEDA liking you is a compliment you OBAMMAWANNABES ARE CRAZY.THEY should hate us we want to help with thier death wish so they get thier 70 virgins anyway I can HELP send them there let me know, I am too old for the army.
Kim, Pasadena, CA, your point would only make sense if the world was not full of crazies from several different sides.  I believe no matter what you do some of those monsters would still want to blow people up.  On the other hand, some nuts no this side of the isle would want to make peace with anyone.  If you leave it up to such extremists, it would only be wars like old times.  These people have the attitude that only them should exist and anyone else should submit to their will.  I simply hope good people with good intentions will rise up and face any smear tactics and vow not live in fear.  The youths were always criticized for not taking part in the political process.  However now they're rising in greater numbers, they are called all demeaning names.  I think moderates have the best opportuny this year to reject the tearing down of people and embrace civility.
This isn't news!  Who cares what a group sympathetic to al Qaeda thinks?  When you keep covering this controversy, you continue to fan the flames.
Obama is a Christian.  There is nothing wrong with that, and there would still be nothing wrong if he or any other presidential candidate WERE Muslim.  We need to stop implying that all Muslims are extremists:  this is intensely offensive and wrong.  Every religion has extremists.
Implying that Obama is Muslim, and implying that being Muslim is a negative thing is shameful.  MSNBC:  Quit fanning the flames of hatred by covering it so much!  Cover the use of innuendo, condemn it, and move on.  Quit buying into the politics of hatred and fear.
Wow. You know, I just read Joe Klein having come from the middle east talking about how they are excited about the idea of an Obama presidency but more by anyone but Bush. But of course, you take the opportunity to tar Obama with the terrorist ties that don't exisit at every opportunity.

Just read the replies, consider the emails that will go out, and then think about how you have injected yourselves into a smear campaign.

I am disgusted by all of you at MSNBC.
To: 'The Truth' - They didn't report it as it was proven to be false.  Do some research...
I can't stand the Clinton's now... especially after they mislead Obama with that pic of him in Somalia garb.  They knew full well that people wouldn't know the difference between a Somalia turbam or a muslim turban.  Now Obama's life may be in even further danger than ever..... yeah thanks alot Billary.... Shame on your campaign!
OBAMMA will unite independents republicans muslims christians and now AL queda and the US what a groovy world see you in CHICAGO ohh im sorry that was 1968,as former GOV. wilder says there will be riots and choas if our canaidate gets passed over is that good for the gooose or the gander
Gail, New Mexico:

You hit the nail on the head. If al Quaeda distrusts and hate anyone it is Obama. They know that Obama's potential influence with good and moderate Muslims will be a danger to their  extremists beliefs. And as the vast majority of Muslim people are caring and good people the very numbers, if applied as a unified force against the likes of al Quaeda, will have a much better chance of eliminating these extremist then we have had sending our military half-way across the world playing hide and seek with the same.
Hillary says:

I did not release this picture.

(Though, I am amazed at how much traction it gets.  Amazed, not happy.  I did not say amazed.  I said not happy.  Not amazed.  Happy)

I thought this was Bushs war---how has it ended up to be The Clinton war---was she the only one that voted for it?I thinkk it was Colon Powells little speech, surrounded with false photos and vials of wmds put the nail in the coffins of our military.Get realand quit blaming the clintons for everything. You have already chased many voters away from voting for Obama with your ugliness.Do not forget Nader is on the ballot and there may be others. We do not have to vote for Obama---we will have a choice.
Another example of the media discrediting Clinton.  I thought journalists were supposed to be unbiased and report news not slant opinion.
Barak Obama is a Muslim and these extremists are mad because we found out about his secretive double life.  Too bad we won't give him the opprotunity to destroy our laws that protect us from Islamic Freaks like them.... So those terrorist freaks are crying foul..... Boo HOOO
Another example of the media discrediting Clinton.  I thought journalists were supposed to be unbiased and report news not slant opinion.
Just one question, do you want a man who turns his back on the flag of the United States of America, as president?
-----------------------------------------------------
HAS GOV. STRICKLAND FOUND HILLARY'S TAX RETURNS???
-----------------------------------------------------
That's right, keep it going. It's like a little game being played in the media right now. How about some news once in awhile?  The picture is not embarrassing or anything to be ashamed of.  It was taken on a humanitarian visit to Somalia, which he made with a group, including military leaders.  The host who gave him the traditional costume was showing him how to wear it, and Obama, was being a polite guest.  There are pictures of Bill Clinton in Muslim garb, as you rightly know. Nobody is responsible for what their parents named them. If someone was named Adolf, would that make him Hitler?  It is silly nonsense. What presumed terrorists think about our presidential candidates or at least express on a site is just that. Not news. And don't try to pull the Farakhan crap you all pulled on Jesse in 84. We are not falling for it this time.  The real news in the debate is Obama saying that he wanted to restore the coalition between Jewish people and African Americans that existed during the Civil Rights Movement, and that had become frayed. He did address anti-semitism at the Ebeneezer Baptist Church on MLK day.  I saw the speech. He is about bringing people together, not tearing them apart. That, I guess is your business. It is definitely not the news.
Firstly, the Clinton Camp didn't disturbute photos...so lets not get carried away with rumors.
Secondly, being a muslim candidate (which Obama is not) would be a huge liability in US right now...so Al-Quaeda can just deal with it.
In a report on MSNBC, McCain is crying about his "100 year war in Iraq" remarks being distorted. He is one to speak! He is distoring the snot out of Sen. Obama's response to Tim Russet's Iraq hypothetical in the recent debates.

The hypothetical proposed by Russert was: if in the years to come, a sovergn Iraq asks that all US troops be removed from within its borders, would a Pres. Obama still reserve the right to strike Al Queda in Iraq?

Sen. Obama rightly responded that he would reserve the right to stike anyone anywhere that threatens US security. John McCain is distorting Sen Obama's response as if Sen. Obama was the one who suggested the hypothetical in the first place.

Anyone who watched the debate knows that Sen. Obama was merely addressing a hypothetical future scenario proposed by Russert. Sen. Obama at no point sugessted that there was no current presence of Al Queda in Iraq - although John McCain's distortion suggests just that. John McCain should not be crying about distortions when he is engaging in such Rovian tactics himself. And McCain still stands by his remarks that US Troop presence in Iraq could continue for 50 - 100 years so I don't see the distortion.

Sen. Obama's response was the correct response, and I for one am glad that he will reserve the right to stike terrorists that threaten the US wherever they are - be it Pakistan, Iraq or anywhere else. I am equally glad that Sen. Obama stood up to McCain's distortion and was quick to point out correctly that the Republican leadership's bungling of Iraq and it's pre-imptive invasion IS THE CAUSE of Al Queda in Iraq. There would be no Al Queda in Iraq if it weren't for the Republican's huge strategic disaster and foreign policy blunder in Iraq.
looks like corporate america is getting a little nervous at the thought of actually having to pay taxes, the workers are the ones supposed to do that, not the people who can actually afford to pay some, anyway this will be the beginning of the repub scare tactics sure to be front and center on the tube in unbearable abundance as they try to scare the citizenry into voting for mccain, if people don't conform to the repubs we shall all perish at the hands of someone or other, but I tend to be optimistic that it ain't going to work this time, obama has given people hope for a better tomorrow, I believe the corrupt corporate machine in washington is going to have it's hands full this go around, and really it's hard to conjure up a more frightening scenario than having mccain in charge of our military anyway
I love it when people say what Hillary thinks. They give themselves to much credit to come close to the vast knowledge she has. Speak of what you really know...nothing. Obama is the one causing all the trouble, he's the one that is making bad decisions. So I agree...Drop out Obama for the good of country.
Fact is that the photo was an AP photo; Clinton or freerepublic couldn't have released it because it wasn't theirs to release.

However, why would Matt Drudge lie about a clinton staffer forwarding it on to him.  And the Clinton camp didn't deny it, only stated that it wasn't a campaign strategy and they have a lot of eager and active supporters.
"Why have your station said anything NAFTA and the Canadian Connection which involves Obama?

The Truth (Sent Thursday, February 28, 2008 3:18 PM)

Too bad the Canadian Embassy has flat denied your lies.  http://www.politico.com/blogs/bensmith/0208/Canadians_deny_Obama_call.html

This is a sad and desperate attempt of a smear from a sad and desperate supporter of HRC. And I'm giving the HRC campaign the benefit of the doubt, but I would NOT be shocked to find out that they planted this story or the Obama in Somali dress photo.
Al Qaida does a good enough job of "portray[ing] Islam as a political negative" with or without slick Hilly.
Who cares?  I bet putting a chick in charge will really make crazy muslims happy to deal with us.  Wil probably lower us in their opinion even more, if that's possible, or even relevant. Most of these posters are as nutty as they are.
The fact that needs to be clarified about Obama is that his grandfather and father were Muslims.  According to the Koran, that makes Obama a Muslim even if he chooses to practice a christian faith.

This can be very dangerous for Obama as the fanatics will only be further enraged by what they will view as a traitor.  He and the people around him will have to be double protected.

Now, regarding Obama's statement about Iraq:
In the summer of 2002, Zarqawi was reported to have settled in northern Iraq, where he joined the Islamist Ansar al-Islam group that fought against the Kurdish-nationalist forces in the region. He reportedly became a leader in the group, although his leadership role has not been established. According to Perspectives on World History and Current Events (PWHCE), a not-for-profit project based in Melbourne, Australia, "Zarqawi was well positioned to lead the Islamic wing of the insurgency when the March 2003 invasion took place.

CONCLUSION:

Obama does not even know al-Qaida WAS in Iraq before what he calls "the misguided" war started.  That was part of the reason why Bush went into Iraq.  Saddam hated the USA and even tried several times to kill Clinton and Bush the elder.  And al-Qaida was there too just after 3000 people died in 911.

Obama doesn't even know the basic history of the war while running for President !  Truly pitiful

Hey "the truth", get your facts straight. Don't be such an ignorant loser...see below

The Canadian embassy flat out denied that any conversation ever took place. According to ABC news:

"It didn't happen," said Roy Norton, who heads up the congressional, public and intergovernmental affairs portfolio for the Canadian embassy.
Okay, now all this makes sense.  Al-Qaeda really wants to destroy Obama, so they have outed him as an Iranian agent.  {Scooter Libby told them I bet.)  The reality  is that Al-Qaeda really wants McCain as president.  Remember that no one knows whether McCain was really in North Viet Nam all those years.  Actually he was in Saudi Arabia where he was trained as an agent for radical Islam, while the US attention was being diverted by communists, liberals, and other fellow travelers.  So as it turns out, McCain is really the Dark Lord and Obama really represents an opposing faction in Iran that thinks Al-Qaeda is too powerful.  Hillary Clinton is really just a pawn in this charade- you know those Arabs never let a woman do anything important.  The really scary part is that some people on this board may read this and actually think it could be true.  You know, the same ones that are sure that Obama took his oath of office on a Quran, or that Hillary and Bill Clinton left a trail of murders behind them as they left the White House. Hopefully the majority of the electorate will vote based upon the issues.  Then again GW Bush was re-elected so there is no telling how this will all turn out.
Does MSNBC, Chuck Todd, Chris Matthews and all of the other Clinton cronies have so little faith in the American peeople, that they feel the need to destroy our hope in thris country? You old white men cannot deal with anyone but a Clinton getting in the whitehouse? I know why you want them in the White house. It will guarentee 4 years of scandelous media coverage for you. SHAME ON ALL OF YOU AND I WILL NO LONGER WATCH YOUR PRoGRAMS
Oh! You're right Rochester, she denied it.  No, she flat out denied it!!!  Well, then she must not have done it.  She and Slick Willy never deny things they have done, do they!?
[So, Al Qaeda hates Iran too? Who knew...
Dave]
--I knew, as did however many others.  al Qaeda = Sunni Extremism and Iran = Shiite.  Shittes and Sunnis do not get along, on of the reasons the MidEast is so volatile--a centuries old conflict.  Anybody who does not know this little factoid has not leg to stand on if they are for continuing the Iraq War.  It's just one of those things.
AND we have to suffer through 8 more months of this junk, I make up my own mind as who to vote for, I am able as an educated person to sort out the chaff from the grain. To me Obama is the chaff. Light and fluffy and to throw to the wind.
[Just one question, do you want a man who turns his back on the flag of the United States of America, as president?
Doreen Shatwell Medford, WI]
--Certainly more than one who turns his back on the Constitution ...

--Clearly, all of the major and relatively-major contenders love this country deeply.  Every one.  Now, can we move on?
And you people on here getting all worked up over this: relax. it's not like they were contemplating sending us a cookie-gram and a big "We're sorry for 9/11" card up until the point they heard this. They're al Qaeda admirers and supporters, they're always looking for and making up excuses to hate us even more.
