Huckabee upset over Rev's McCain nod

Posted: Thursday, February 28, 2008 7:00 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ’s Matthew Berger
TEXARKANA, Texas -- Huckabee accused the Rev. John Hagee of playing politics over principle by endorsing McCain, and criticized the Republican front-runner for not accepting a debate.

Speaking after a rally in Texarkana, Huckabee said he was surprised by Hagee’s endorsement because of McCain’s lack of fervor on abortion -- despite his 100% anti-abortion rights voting record. (McCain has, however, voted for stem-cell research.) Huckabee also said Hagee told him he endorsed because he assumed McCain would win the nomination.

“He just thought that the political rationale was he wanted to get on Sen. McCain’s team, and he thought he was gonna win the nomination,” Huckabee said. “I don’t think that’s a foregone conclusion, and even if I did, I would stand on principle more than I would politics.”

Huckabee said he spoke with Hagee, expressed his “disappointment and surprise” and asked him to hold off on publicly backing McCain.

“I felt that it was totally out of character for what I knew he believed,” Huckabee said, “or at least I thought he did.”

Huckabee also criticized McCain for not accepting a debate among the remaining Republican presidential candidates, after suggesting his interest earlier in the week.

“I would debate anywhere, anytime, there’s no issue that I would be afraid to sit down in front of Sen. McCain and discuss, none,” Huckabee said. “And if you’re going to be president, you ought to be willing to sit down in front of any group.”

During the rally, Huckabee made a rare attack against Obama, criticizing the cost of his spending proposals. “When I hear Barack Obama say that he’s gonna provide everybody with health care and college tuition and pave the streets with gold,” Huckabee said at a rally. “Ya know, the American Taxpayers Union has already figured out that just the proposals he’s put on the table so far already are going to cost about $287 billion, so far.”

He went on to say that the estimates don’t include costs if the United States abandons Iraq. “If we were doing the MasterCard commercial,” Huckabee said, “we’d simply say we know what some of the costs are, some of the items on his agenda -- priceless. But this much we know, we can’t afford it.”

Shouldn't this Church be losing its tax-exempt status for endorsing a politician?
McCain needs to take a risk and debate Huckabee.  If he does, he could end up helping Mike because Huckabee always surged in the polls after all the debates except for the one is SC.  The problem for McCain is that if he doesn't debate Huckabee, many of us Huckabots are going to have a hard time voting for him in the fall.  We already feel like we have been kicked to the back of the bus by the establishment and are ready to bolt from the party.  McCain's refusal to acknowledge Huckabee's challenge just makes people like me feel like I don't belong in the GOP.

Debate or 3rd party!!
A lot of McCain backers are just jumping on the bandwagon. If John McCain ducks a debate now - thinking he has more to lose then to gain - I wonder if his strait talk express has already transitioned into the BS as usual express?
I agree with Gov. Huckabee, I think John McCain is afraid to face Mike because he knows that he will lose in any debate with Gov. Huckabee. I think the liberal press has helped to push John McCain to the front, knowing Sen. McCain won't have a chance against Barak Obama in November. The only one that can debate and win against Obama is Mike Huckabee
I agree with Huckabee on this one.

Principle should always come before politics. Putting politics first is a lot of what's wrong with America today.

He does have a way of putting things doesn't he-- priceless.
How could you not like a man named Huckabee? I looooove the Huck...the Huck is gooooood!(Seinfield)
Where are you sen. McCain?  Debate the issues that Republicans want to hear.  You are not serving your country by avoiding Texas, Oh, Vt, RI republicans.  We want to hear you.  If you can't sit down and have a debate, then will you shy away from the challenges that will face you if you are president?
The McCain gravy train express is leaving the station -- ALL ABOARD!
Go Huck, tell it like it is.  You are a man of principle and should be the next President.  Too bad the GOP is jumping on the McChicken Express.
I am so GLAD Mike Huckabee is "attacking" Obama.  I want to hear what the "silent" candidate has to say.  Keep telling us MSNBC, I don't think the problem is with Huckabee not saying anything.
Huckabee is politically irrelevant.
It seems that once again the press is trying to see just how much they can influence the elections.
Polls should be done away with so all of the candidates can have an equal playing field.
A lot of voters are strongly influenced by the fact that the polls have already picked the winning candidate.  also the news papers and tv ancors just
want sell papers and improve ratings so they beef
the stories all they can get away with not to mention
their biosed opinions.  It is no wonder this nation is in the trouble it is in.  I think the press is
electing our public officials before we even get
to the voting booth!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  A good
example is Rev. Hagee assuming that McCain is going to win so that is why he indorsed him.  Well mabee
there will be something in it for Hagee if McCain
wins that seems to be the kind of spirit that drives the Republican Party.  I think a fine man like Presidential Candidate Mike Huckabee should be running on on an Independant Party Ticket!!!!!!!!!!!
John Hagee is a hyprocrite. He divorced his first wife to marry a woman in his own church. This fat tub of lard should be ignored until the All Mighty gets around to dealing with him.

Just shows alot of these televangelists have no true convictions.
Huckabee needs to disappear into the shadows. Be gone.
Unfortunately lots of people jump on that endorsement bandwagon just to get their own names out front.  From some of the things I'm hearing about Rev. Hagee, Huckabee's campaign is better served without him.  I do think principles trump politics.  People who don't think this is what the real problem with government is today.  Mike Huckabee stand by your principles.  You are a true leader and if America truly wants the change so many Americans say they want they will see this.  If they want experience---well you've got that, too (and it's real governing experience not legislative).
Haggee is a sellout.  He wants power and a seat at the table more than he wants to take a stand for what he believes. Power over principle. Pathetic. Haggee - you could have waited until the choice was clearly a choice between McCain and Obama and then endorsed McCain. The fact that you came out now and endorsed McCain over Huckabee means you're more interested in "making pretty" with McCain than you are in making a statement for true conservative principles. What a shame.
By the way FR, I think you stop posting comments on a typical day at around 6:30 ET on most days then resume posting comments in volumes the next day or jsut start anew. You guys need to be upfront and let us know whether comments won't post until the next day.
Go Huckabee.  Call out John McCain.  How pompous he is to not debate during the Primary Season!  It's just ridiculous!
Hucka who?
What a REAL REAL Shame that McCain won't debate Huckabee!
The fear is mounting.  Just hang in there Huck. Remember that something will happen sooner or later to give you a say in this election. Don't worry - those of us supporting you appreciate everything you do. Be safe and keep on keeping on... not sure who said that keep on keeping on thingie so don't be made for me not giving credit...  just don't know who it was. :-)
Hypocrite........

Have you no shme Mr. Hagee?
When the preacher goes for politics over principle it really is disappointing. The message is that right and wrong is socially relative.
I am so glad he spoke out... I received a copy of an email from Pastor Hagee and it explained his actions... Which did not have much basis, I was also told Hagee gave Huckabee the Max campaign last year... So, he basically just jumped on the McCain wagon. I am extremely disappointed in McCain's failure to debate Huckabee and even if he becomes the Republican Nominee... He does NOT have my vote! Trying to not let your competitor be heard by halting all real national media (issue) coverage is dirty and unethical. Shame on you McCain, shame!
Folks from Arkansas (Democrats and Republicans) just don't know when to quit.
Sen. McCain must decide if he denounces the virulently anti-Catholic and homophobic public pronouncements of Hagee.  Also, Hagee makes imminent war with Iran a central tenant of his pronouncements, and makes outrageous statements about Muslims in the US and abroad.  He is a divisive figure in American religious life.

McCain has been asked to reject this endorsement by such disparate forces as the Catholic League and liberal Jewish writers, but the media has not demanded such a rejection.  (Hagee touts himself as pro-Israel, but has been rejected nonetheless by many Jewish journalists because of his bigotry.)

Sen. Barack Obama has denounced the anti-Semitic comments and unsolicited endorsement of Minister Louis Farrakhan.  I sincerely believe that Sen. McCain has the moral fiber to do the same, at least.
I just *heart* Huckabee! He has the best personality. He has the greatest right to be offended. Here is a man true to his word and his convictions. When someone else breaks rules you have honored... Well, it just feels dirty.

This reflects VERY poorly on Hagee. Vote Huckabee!
The voters of the other states that have not had their primaries apparently do not mean a thing the RNP or McCain.  A debate is necessary for that reason alone.  We are very tired of the Obama/Hillary show and would like to see some conservative outlooks on the issues today.  Since we have seen so many candidates flip/flop on issues, we need to see if the Republican candidates are staying the course on their issues.
Huckabee, Maybe if you revealed how you lost 150 lbs. and tutored John Hagee in his effort to lose 300 lbs, he just might support your run for president.
why has no one in the msnbc or first read responded to the hate speech from Hagee or his views on Isreal and the coming of Jesus via destroying Isreal.

Are you guys have a double standard?
Right - so are you guys going to write something about Hagee's anti catholic rants : it's been 12 hours or so : more than when you wrote about Farakahan's andorsement of Obama.

Right - I thought not - fair and balanced !!!

So is this a problem of McCains or not - is Bill doNahue credible when he is ranting against a Repoublican or not : or is your blog just for the moments whne someone rants about the religion of democrats: fair and balanced - right !!
I am very disappointed in Hagee.  I feel he has betrayed the principles he preaches.  This is pure politics.  It looks like he just went along to get along -- I wonder what promises McCain made to him??  It amazes me that a pastor can abandon his principles and play politics!

And, what is wrong with McCain. This is still the Primary season.  Voters are still waiting to cast their votes.  Are they all insignificant to McCain?  He's making deals with Politicians and Preachers, but he's not willing to have a Face to Face debate with Huckabee?  What is he afraid of?  And, why should we support someone too afraid to debate a Political Challenger?  I find it unamerican!  I am outraged at the statement this makes to our young people.  It smacks of a "fixed" election.

It appears McCain is happy to tell the American People, "it's over", "I won".  I thought we decided this at our National Convention, when the 1,191 votes are actually counted.  As of now, I see far too many UNBOUND delegates in play to call this race for McCain.  And, I predict that the GOP will not nominate him at the Convention.  His lead was procured by votes from LIBERAL BLUE states.  States that will never vote for a Republican President.  However, all Huckabee's wins were in RED states.  States that WILL vote for a Republican President.  These are the states we need to carry in November.  McCain does not have their support!!  The GOP Delegates know this and will vote accordingly at the Convention.  So, McCain will loose on the Convention floor.  That's why he doesn't want to go to convention and that's why he doesn't want to debate.  He knows his message will not sell to Conservative Republicans!
The Huck should go back to Arkansas and stay there. Its time to rally around the nominee. Its going to be a tough general election agains Barack Hussein Obama.
I believe McCain is not agreeing to have a debate with the remaining Republican candidates because he knows he hasn't got a shot against Huckabee! Huckabee is the greatest debater left among all of the remaining candidates.  Mccain can't afford to lose more votes. Huckabee can beat Obama or Hillary Clinton in November.  Why has there been such a neglect (or is it just plain ignorance!) of Huckabee?! He's right on track with what Americans need and want!! Wake Up Americans!!! I predict he will defeat Mccain in Texas! P.S. There wouldn't be stem cell research without aborted fetuses to perform tests on!! Mccain + Votes= DISASTER!
Mike Huckabee is the only Republican for this race. He is the only conservative.  Hopefully after listneing to Mike, most democrats will realize there is a candidate who they can vote for. Go Mike!!!
Way to go Mike! I agree McCain should participate in at least one more debate before March 4th. I'm also bewildered by Hagee's endorsement of McCain. The odds of Mike winning did not stop James Dobson, Chuck Norris, or Dallas Cowboy Legend Cliff Harris from endorsing Huckabee.
Hagee also happens to be a Divorcer. An act adamantly proscribed by Jesus, yet conveniently bypassed by the lusty, such as the Right Reverend Hagee. Selective Sinners?
Go Mike Huckabee!  You do not need everyones endorsement.
You above all the other Multi National Corporate Financed Politicians shall continue.
Honesty will further serve the nation than will politics.
Buck, from Dallas, hey! hi.  So...would you also say that Abe Lincoln should have gone back to his log cabin and never have fought all the way to convention and never have debated Douglas?  Yes, we DO have a candidate who can out debate Barack Hussein Obama.  A candidate who won't put us all to sleep with "my friends" inserted into every sentence.  A candidate who is standing to give us a choice.  Hundreds of thousands stand with him. Mike Huckabee.
Just not Hillary, please! She'll go off in somebody's face someday for sure. I am voting for McCain.

Here's a summary of Hillary's answers to questions: "I have answered this question before several times, so let me be perfectly clear: I want what the people of this country want."

What exactly does that mean? You never get a  straightforward answer with her. She counts on ambiguous sound bites. It seems as though she thinks she's got us all figured out. She is counting on the American people to behave like cattle. Thank you, counselor, but we're a little bit more intelligent (and diverse) than that.
Actually, any candidate has the right to determine where he speaks and with whom he debates. The Republican nomination process is over and the Republicans had better just rally around McCain or they are sunk.  McCain's peccadillo aside, the brunt of that story is not about how he was aligned with a woman not his wife, but how he was connecting and doing lobbying for a lobbyist that was represented by that particular woman.  I am uncertain which account is worse, the idea he was cheating on his wife or the idea he was pimping for a lobbyist after all of his claims of anti-lobbyist palaver.
"Huckabee accused the Rev. John Hagee of playing politics over principle"

Hmmm, looks like a Republican, smells like a Republican, sure glad I didn't lie down in it.
Mr. Huckabee;

Please keep plugging away. I respect your attitute and approach. As an independent, character means more than party affiliation and I trust you. Please keep pushing... Please
When evangelicals disregard principles for political expediency, they deserve what they get.  I sure don't want to be next to Rev. Hagee in the end times....

I'm supporting Mike Huckabee for president. Period.
Hagee, from his pulpit has condemned gays, pro choice advocates, the people in Washington - yet he endorses John McCain that is guilty of all the above.  I've questioned hagee's true intent before, now I know he is not all he is claiming.
Second of all, if McCain rejects Cunningham's remark about Obama, then he should reject Hagee's endorsement because he is very bigoted in his remarks, week after week.
McCain talks about meaning what you say and say what you mean, example his & cindy's remarks about Michelle Obama - then lets use that same rule on him about being Iraq 100 years.
Its time to realize McCain is two faced, flip-flopper and cant be trusted.  I guess he & hagee are alot alike - Do as I say, not as I do.
I am a minister and I support Gov. Huckabee because I believe in the Christian values he shows and represents as well as his policies to lead our nation foward.  VOTE HUCKABEE and lets see real, true, POSITIVE change in America.
If you go to Huckabee's website www.mikehuckabee.com you will find reasonable and intelligent discussion.  If you go to McCain's, you will find disinterest, profanity, anger, despair, and divisiveness.  The media picked the wrong guy.
If fellow Republicans actually believe I heart Huckleberries has a shot, you're making Baby Bush look like a Mensa candidate.  McCain is the only opportunistic force to have a realistic chance. Get on board and get over your problems.  You are not going to find a candidate that BELIEVES EVERYTHING that you do.  It's called suspension of disbelief.  Go with it.
If you follow McCain’s campaign, you will see that he has no plan to rebuild our national image and he is for the same Bush-Cheney  policy that is “either you with us or against us” this pre emptive assertion on foreign policy is one of the biggest reason of disapproval and dissatisfaction of the world to us. McCain is a grandpa in foreign policy and those policies is costing us billions of dollars from our domestic agendas and make us less safe in the world.

We have a president for last seven years who does not inspire its country people at ll. We have a leader in the White House whose actions make us believe that we are not a part of the government anymore. We can’t afford to have a president like McCain who represents the same and who constantly reminds us that we can not do anything anymore other than embracing more wars to come and constantly talking and spending our wealth, energy and time to foreign agendas instead of investing same in ourselves.

Expertise in foreign policy will not fix our economy; will not deliver a better health care, a 21st century education plan that will help us to compete in global economy. McCain’s slogan is an empty bucket where no issues or substances can be found other than war mongering rhetoric.
Mr Huckabee;
I can not begin to tell you how much I appreciate your willngness to hang in there, your approach to this campaign, and most of all the character you've displayed throught this campaign! You sir are just what this country really needs at the helm! You have my prayers first and foremost, then my vote, and then we'll let our Lord determine the rest!! Thanks for staying in there and God bless you!!
