Huckabee upset over Rev's McCain nod

Posted: Thursday, February 28, 2008 7:00 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ’s Matthew Berger
TEXARKANA, Texas -- Huckabee accused the Rev. John Hagee of playing politics over principle by endorsing McCain, and criticized the Republican front-runner for not accepting a debate.

Speaking after a rally in Texarkana, Huckabee said he was surprised by Hagee’s endorsement because of McCain’s lack of fervor on abortion -- despite his 100% anti-abortion rights voting record. (McCain has, however, voted for stem-cell research.) Huckabee also said Hagee told him he endorsed because he assumed McCain would win the nomination.

“He just thought that the political rationale was he wanted to get on Sen. McCain’s team, and he thought he was gonna win the nomination,” Huckabee said. “I don’t think that’s a foregone conclusion, and even if I did, I would stand on principle more than I would politics.”

Huckabee said he spoke with Hagee, expressed his “disappointment and surprise” and asked him to hold off on publicly backing McCain.

“I felt that it was totally out of character for what I knew he believed,” Huckabee said, “or at least I thought he did.”

Huckabee also criticized McCain for not accepting a debate among the remaining Republican presidential candidates, after suggesting his interest earlier in the week.

“I would debate anywhere, anytime, there’s no issue that I would be afraid to sit down in front of Sen. McCain and discuss, none,” Huckabee said. “And if you’re going to be president, you ought to be willing to sit down in front of any group.”

During the rally, Huckabee made a rare attack against Obama, criticizing the cost of his spending proposals. “When I hear Barack Obama say that he’s gonna provide everybody with health care and college tuition and pave the streets with gold,” Huckabee said at a rally. “Ya know, the American Taxpayers Union has already figured out that just the proposals he’s put on the table so far already are going to cost about $287 billion, so far.”

He went on to say that the estimates don’t include costs if the United States abandons Iraq. “If we were doing the MasterCard commercial,” Huckabee said, “we’d simply say we know what some of the costs are, some of the items on his agenda -- priceless. But this much we know, we can’t afford it.”

I am so upset with McCain no policy on health care and economy. He only knows war and foreign policy which will not give us food on the table and treatment when we become ill. What substances he talks about other than staying 100 years in Iraq.
Does anyone have any clue that every month we are spending about 10-15 billion dollars to Iraq war and empting out our domestic economy? Are people like McCain supporters are crazy that they become blindfold and they are not seeing the difference? Are they are so dumb that they want to repeat last 8 years of Bush legacy? John McCain is a war monger and he likes t stay in Iraq for 50 to 100 years and hoping for more wars to come at the expense of our brave soldiers and our national treasures.

Let me ask an open question which McCain has no plan for it. McCain says he has many plans. What plan he has for economy, health care, immigration and abortions. What he stands for? Because he is been in the senate for many years, people think he is full of policies. To be honest I do not hear him saying any specific at all.
John McCain is weak on economy and no plan to rebuild our ailing economy. He said" I still need to be educated" What a joke! We are sending some one in the White House who has very little knowledge about our economy which is the most vital part of our national strength. He wants to run our country by military knowledge and foreign policy.

John McCain said that Health care is an option and should be decided by individuals. Is not that failed policy on health care we had for decades? It is shame that our health care system ranks 37th in the world. So what’s the good of being the wealthiest and strongest nation on earth? McCain can enjoy the federal health care plan for himself with out a word but when time to share the same plan with American people then it becomes a bad policy. What hypocrisy? If it’s not double standard than what is?

Recently John McCain said that “we have the best health care system in the world”, this may be true statements for him because some privileged like him can have the access to it. What happens to millions of Americans when they are out of reach of this so called best health care because either the premium is too high or the insurance company is denying the health coverage for the pre-existing conditions? What is McCain’s position to fix this problem which has crippled our access to health care system?
C´mon Huckabee, Dont undestand how a man that is supposed to be very religious can support any war at all. Are you too busy with politics that you simply  forgot all about Jesus teachings?
Mixing religion with politics only leads to fundamentalists
Maybe Hagee IS standing on principle.  Wouldn't it be nice if Hagee supports McCain because McCain is a decent man who has served this country with honor and distinction?

Hate is hate, and Huckabee's religious smears and fraudulent Romney Christmas cards have exposed him as a divisive and arrogant bigot.

Frankly, I am embarrassed for any religious leader that actually has endorsed him.
I am glad to be an American, I hope Mike has enough money to finish the course. I'm going on record and sending him my dollars. Go and Win!!!
I am glad to be an American, I hope Mike has enough money to finish the course. I'm going on record and sending him my dollars. Go and Win!!!
dunno about you other repubs, but I am voting on the 4th for Huckabee. Can he win? Probably not. Am I wasting my vote? No, I am expressing my desire to have a candidate who thinks like I do.Perhaps even McCain will get the message. I doubt it, but I wont pull the lever for him ..not even in November. And Hagee, you are a such a fat excuse for a human..check it out, right next to homosexuality is glutonness. Have you ever missed a meal?
Huck whines alot. He is not the Mr.Perfect that his Jim Jones followers make him out to be. I have found a whole lot of dirt on him. Do some research. What really makes me laugh are the Huck people's crazy thoughts. McCain who has almost all the delegates needed is afraid of Huck who may still be trailing Romney? LOL  Go to the Rasmussen website and check out the polls. Who needs to be afraid?????? Like Bill O'Reilly said, I have debate fatigue. Huck could always have a debate with Nader.
God has always had people who stand for him, always will.Thank God for the Huckabee's.He has my vote and respect.
Mccain needs to debate or many republicans will not vote for him because it shows he is cocky and arrogant to think we even like him as a candidate on the republican side. many republicans will vote for a democrat (unless the choice is obama-then NO WAY), in nov if mccain shows that he cant debate to show us what he stands for NOW against huckabee. i will vote huckabee, but many wont vote republican if mccain is the choice for us.
I'm sorry, but Huckabigotry has played religious bigotry politics from the get go when he authured the "Holy War" in Iowa. Mr. Liberal govenor went after the Anti-Mormon vote in Iowa and in the Southern States. He got his share of those votes.  In reality he doesn't ge people to vote for him but these voters have voted against the other candidate. The same is true with McCain. Huckabigotry is the reason we have had to settle with McCain and not Romney.  Outside of the Anti-Mormon voters in these states Mr. Liberal was finished behind Ron Paul in five states and in single digits and the very low double digits on Super Tuesday.  The Anti-Mormon voters have taken Huckabigotry only so far.  He is now totally illrelevant and has earned the title of Huckavanity!
Don't count Huckabee out , He can still quite possibly force a brokered convention by stopping McCain from reaching that magic number of delegates.
And if Huck can suck in just enough delegates to do that, then McCain is done!
It is wrong (& evil!!) for a Rev John to play politics & not adhere to divine principles at this point in time.
If McCain has got his 1,191 delegates, then endorses him by all means and then say that McCain would be a better President than a Democrat President.

If he endorse McCain over Huckabee, he is saying that doing nothing against abortion is acceptable. Cheating on first wife is acceptable. Being a hypocrite is acceptable to God.

McCain should ignore Huckabee and focus on Obama / Clinton.
some posters think god will make huckabee president (just like god wanted bush, and before bush, god apparently wanted clinton?).  and so they don't need to be realistic about politics and rather should stand on principle.  right! ... as we watch obama become president and appoint his type of judges while we just wring our hands in church and pray for an un-electable huckabee.
UN-BE-LIE-VABLE!

Who could've thought that John Hagee would endorse McCain over Huckabee or that Pat Robertson would endorse Giuliani. WHAT A SHAME!

I'M AN EVANGELICAL AND I WOULD NEVER VOTE FOR MCCAIN.
Slander is a very damaging thing and is reprehensible in the eyes of God. "Thou shalt not bear false withness against thy neighbor" Exodus:20.  Yet, in the vale of political expediency, many conservative Christians appear more than willing to accept obvious "false witness" as verity, and to follow the broad way.  Senator Obama was born in America (Hawaii is a state of the United States of America) not in Africa, the middle east or Indonesia. Senator Obama's name was given him by his parents, he did not choose it.  Senator Obama is a Christian, not a muslim.  Mr. Obama is the husband of one wife, not two, and has two lovely daughters by this union.  Senator Obama attended one of our nation's premier universities at a great cost to his family and, yet, chose to serve the poor rather than join a prestigious law firm in his youth.  Now, the bible asserts that Jesus says, concerning serving the poor: "in as much as you have done it to the least of these you have done it unto me," Jesus says, "if any man divorces his wife and marries another, saving for fornication, he commits adultry."  So, just tell me, my fellow Chrisitans, just how do we, if we are honest, support Senator McCain (divorced and remarried and supporting the wealthy agenda) or Mr. Hagee (divorced and filled with hate) and yet claim to be followers of Jesus? In the book of Timothy, the apostle Paul asserts that a leader in the church should be the husband of one wife, and further that a woman is bond to her husband as long as he lives.  Thus, Mr. Hagee is an adulterer, and not qualified to serve in the office of bishop, deacon or pastor.  If you are an honest Christian, and willing to follow the truth of the bible, you might consider these biblical tenets.
MIKE HUCKABEE IS THE ONLY MAN CAN LEAD THE AMERICA AS A PRESEDENT BECAUSE HE HAS THE BEST PERSONALITY AND VERY CLEVER AND ONLY MAN CAN KEEP THE AMERICA IN ONE PIECE AND PEACE.MY HEART IS WITH MR MIKE HUCKABEE AND I PRAY FOR HIM TO BECOME THE PRESEDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.

I AM HIS TURKISH FAN OR TURKISH CHUCK NORRIS:)
GOD BLESS YOU MR MIKE HUCKABEE.
BEST REGARDS,
KEMAL SABUNSOY
This blog is run by the NEO CONS, Their IS NO FREEDOM OF SPEECH!! GOD FORBIB THE REAL TRUTH COMES OUT!!! OOH!! DON'T FORGETT MEDIA PEOPLE T CENSOR OR YOUR MEDIA BOSS MURDOCH WILL FIRE YOU FRO ALLOWING TRUTH TO BE ON THIS BLOG!! TRAITORS OF AMERICA!
Hukabee,
You have increased my ability to believe in the impossible. To never give up on my dreams no matter what the situation looks like.
Hagee, Robertson and the power hungry ego-tripped right are being exposed as who they are: PUFFED UP EMPTY SUITED CHRISTIANS.  They belong to a FALSE CHRISTIAN movement and are being exposed for it. They preach faith then try to control circumstance.  Hagee boast that he has government 'sources' that give him the covert down low and he uses them in his sermons to put FEAR into people and to puff himself up.  Robertson.....well need I say more.  These guys are ruining true Christianity and Huckabee should know it.

I like Huckabee but he's being a little naive here with the Word-Faith Charismatic phonies.
I am terribly dismayed with Christian Evangelists, who are the Christian Community's role models, supporting those who do not stand for strong Christian values.  I want to see pastors doing what they can to encourage their congregations to support candidates that support Christian values. They can't do they if they aren't even doing it themselves.  Rev. Hagee should be ashamed of himself.
I'm sure there's another televangelist out there needing some air time who would endorse huckabee.  And yes, they should lose ALL tax exempt status for engaging in politics this way!!
I don't feel sorry for Huckabee.  He's had several opportunities to debate McCain, but he was so concerned with "worshiping" McCain while bad mouthing Romney. He should should have been more assertive and explained the differences between him and McCain.  But no, he'd rather spend that time saying how much of hero McCain is. He rolled the dice, and he lost.  I don't blame McCain at all.  Huckabee should learn from his mistake and try again in 2012.
I'm glad to be an American...where we have separation of church and state.
While I appreciate Mr Huckabee's drive and energy, I doubt his motives.  He is clearly not going to win the Party's nomination.  Why he is still in the race is questionable.  I personally believe he is posturing himself for future Political Office while hurting the Republican Party.  Sen McCain is doing the right thing.  He is posturing himself and the Party for a win in Nov.  Mike, stop your quest for the newspaper spotlight and get in line behind Sen McCain, the Republican Party winner.  PS, Your appearance on SNL degraded your role as a possible Presidential Candidate and made you look even more stupid than your continuing the impossible race,
pompus charlatans like hagee will burn for eternity in hades...these telecreeps and false prophets con people out of their money and souls...they are all the same...robertson, falwell, hagee, the coke snorting gay minister in colorado..lmao
Huckabee's the man...stand still and watch!
Gee, even Huckabee is now criticzing Obama. So now we have Bush, Hillary, McCain and Huckabee attacking Obama. I find that very comical. All I can say is you go Obama! It can't be too difficult taking on one incompetent clown, two has-beens and one religious looney tune.
Thanks to those'Listed Thare is still "some"good in people.Monte VA. John q public.Chris.G Presley.Robert Ca.Tom pts pa.Tired of Systom. Ineed not say more.
I'm no McCain supporter but I have to agree with that guy who says the McCain train is leaving the station, especially when conservative ministers start endorsing him.  Can a Rush Limbaugh endorsement be far behind?   Unlike nitwit democrats, republicans always know which side of their bread is buttered.  They'll climb aboard and won't be sitting it out come November.  Huckabee probably ought to get on board, too, if he doesn't want to be left behind.  You certainly can't complain about not driving the issues when you're not on the train.
Conservatives United is irrelevant!
I am  a Zell Miller Democrat that has finally found a voice that embraces true conservative values without being a pompous self centered elitist (National GOP).

Huckabee is a real person without strings attached.
All the others are players with reprobate minds.

Let the South succeed again!  But this time for the right reason!

Dear Dingle-berry,

Your candidate I assume has always been McCain or Romney.
You ask the Huck supporters to get on board, but McCain nor the GOP has acknowledge us in any way!

Just as Zell Miller said about the National Democratic party. "They come south in the election year with Halitosis looking for a date and think that a breath mint should be sufficient.."

It is not about winning or compromise, I am voting for a man of convictions, a man who represents my view points and I will not relent!

Write in Huckabee in November, let the GOP sink!
I love the "Your Decission 2008" and "You Decide 2008"
all of these should be "We have chosen for you 2008"
John McCain, you owe it to us MY FRIEND to have a debate! Not having a debate shows all of us and republican party how weak you must be on your issues therefore, The winner is a Democrat in office, Oh wait, they are still campaigning because no one has one the nomination yet AND NEITHER HAVE YOU and you won't!  See you at the convention!
An individual minister or priest can endorse. A churh may not. That is why the Rev. Jackson and Sharpton can endorse Obama. The Catholic Church can not endorse.
Huckabee has lost. He should say huckaby.
It's maddening to see how many republicans (like Pat and Rush) are willing to toss over principal for expediency, and even ignore long-held grudges to fall in line. What's necessary for evil to triumph is not for good people to do nothing, but for "good" people to decide on the "lesser of two evils." We will NOT vote for a man who is pro-choice just because someone tells us he's the one who can win. McCain is a Democrat in sheep's clothing, the only good thing I can say is that he at least doesn't back down on his positions. He makes Hillary look conservative. Hang in there, Huck! Substance is always better than form, even if form sells! A man of principal should NEVER stand aside simply because the powerful say he should!
It's not over yet!!!
Here's the numbers........

NYT total= 845 PLEDGED delegates to John McCain
He needs 346 out of the possible 547 in the remaining states' possible delegates = 63% needed.  Huckabee can keep McCain from getting that, especially if McCain keeps throwing conservative radio hosts 'under the bus' and keeps accidently calling himself liberal in his speeches.

Go Huck go!!!!  If McCain wins he will destroy the GOP and he doesn't have a shot winning against the dems, who will ruin this country.
Dear Tired of the system,  I have heard John Hagee speak from his pulpit many times and have NEVER heard him expound on ANY subject that he didn't back up Biblically, so I am not sure where you get the bigot remark.  I find it very hard to believe that you are a minister because of your blatant disrespect of calling Sen. McCain names and attaching his credibility and integrity and even neglecting to use proper capitalization of Sen. McCain's wife's name and Pastor Hagee's name; I find it hard to believe a man of the cloth would do that.  You certainly managed to capitalized Michelle Obama's name! I also like Mike Huckabee, but unless God shows His mighty hand, he probably won't get the nomination, time to rally behind McCain, or ...would you prefer Obama???
I am sorry for all of you that say "religion should stay out of politics," but in every church I've been to, they each have their own internal political system.  Who gets to lead sunday school, who gets to lead the choir, etc... Quit whining and judging a religious figure's credibility over who they support.  It isn't the first time two Pastors have disagreed on something!
John Hagee is a Christian Zionist whose only concern is Israel. He created C.U.F.I(Christians United for Israel) which is an AIPAC type lobbying group. Hagee doesn't care about the Christians in Bethlehem who are terrorized by the Jews. Doesn't care that the Talmud states Jesus is burning in hell and Mary is a whore. He is a Zionist-Extremist 1st and foremost & he knows McCain wants to invade the entire MidEast for Israel. It doesn't matter that Huckabee is a minister and McCain isn't Pro-Life. Hagee only cares about the Jewish state. Christian people and values mean nothing to him.
Since when did we as a democratic country, with our government and political principles based on the Constitution of the U.S., lower ourselves to attempt to intertwine religion instead of reason in our political process? Our Founding Fathers established a government of the people (dare I say it), not of the church. Let me clarify and you can quote me on this, “our Founding Fathers of the United States of America did not create a ‘Christian’ nation, nor a ‘Jewish’ nation, nor a ‘Muslim’ nation, nor a ‘Hindu’ nation, etc.” They are on record as establishing checks and balances to avoid any one religious group from ever holding power of sway over anyone else, especially in politics. Now modern right-wing fundamentalist extremist such as Huackabee and his base of upper echelon theocrat supporters are the exact type of tragedy that Madison and Jefferson were talking about that could eventually happen to our American politics when we abandon reason and logic in favor of ideology. I am not anti-religious; no, in fact I subscribe to an ecumenical Christian denomination, and yet I certainly would never attempt to use my religion to sway others to follow my political preference. How people such as Huckabee can get up on a stage and declare that they would change the Constitution of the U.S. to more closely resemble the Word of God is sad, repugnant and appalling. Mr. Huckabee God doesn’t vote Democrat, Republican or Independent and I am terribly sorry to inform you of that fact. This type of blatant religious extremism and absolutism is reminiscent of the socialist, totalitarian and nationalist movements of the early 20th century. More surprising is there are actually people who sincerely believe the pandering and rhetoric that these adversaries of true democracy promote under the guise of religion. It is truly a shame and demeaning to the vast whole of the religious and secular communities alike. How catastrophic for us and democracy as a whole. Democracy allows for the freedom of individuals to choose what beliefs they wish to subscribe to, if any at all. There are plenty of misinformed people watching people like Huckabee ready to imitate his platform in the future. I close with a lesser known quote from Jefferson who said it best when he stated, "Man, once surrendering his reason, has no remaining guard against absurdities the most monstrous, and like a ship without rudder, is the sport of every wind."
Rev. Hagee sees John McCain as the best choice to bring about Armageddon.
Pastor Hagee calls the Catholic Church a "whore"...and McCain is proud to have his support??? Is McCain going to "reject and denounce" such hateful and bigoted remarks?
sjh - you are so absolutely correct.  I'm glad to finally hear someone post actual scripture when dealing with the republicans and their supposedly blind faith.  I felt that way when they threw out a Baptist Sunday school teacher for an adulterer (Rreagan) and feel that way with McCain.  I'm a til death do us part born again Christian and I would not attend services at any church where the pastor had more than one living spouse.  If your spouse is a physical threat to you or your children you must leave the spouse but nothing allows you to re-marry as long as that spouse is still alive if you are a true Christian.  Since McCain left his first wife for Cindy it is pretty obvious who did the fornicating (like Rreagan).  There is nothing religious or right about adultry and having two living spouses may be leagal by government standards, it is not acceptable if you are a Christian.  It is acceptable to the wealthy hypocrits of the repugnant party cause it is all about the money, they have just used the religious right to obtain and keep great wealth at the expense of every hard working middle-class American (a group that is deminishing very quickly).  So wake up America - don't drink the "red" kool aid ever again, it is not healthy for your mind, body, or spirit.
Hagee can endorse whoever he wants, however, to do it 5 days before the TX primary and to send out automated calls on behalf of McCain is just too cut throat for me. I am sickened by this.
Pat Robertson crowned Guilanni,he dropped out; Bob Jones III endorsed Romney,he's out of the race;now, as for McCain,Hagee endorses him,he will soon be dropped out.God works in a mysterious way.Huckabee can still win. Go Mike Go.You will win.God already put Pat Robertson and Bob Jones III to shame.Hagee will be next.
Hagee is a sellout.  People of principle will vote for the man with principle..Mr. Huckabee.  Polls and the media don't elect the president, the people do.

Take a good hard look, vote your conscience and let the chips fall where they may.  I have to wonder how Hagee can look himself in the mirror after this. Poor choice Mr. Hagee, but that is your choice and one you will have to live with.
I don't like Huckabee and would never vote for him because he "want's to take back this country for Christ." I am a Christian, but I don't want to hear a sermon as the state of the union and I don't think politicians agendas should include the status of our salvation.  However, I would love it if he would debate McCain on the fair tax!  I want to hear what the justification for forcing me to tithe to Washington.
The fair tax, taxes consumption which I have a choice over.  The current system lets you choose between working and getting at LEAST a tenth of your money taken away or not working and being given all that you need in life for free.
I called the general line at Hagee's church and left a message. Tell him he needs to reconsider. Give reasons and appeal to him for prayer.

Be kind, though - remember he leads 17,000 congregants. We want him to be strong and to have peace... But AFTER he gets this right.
F.Y.I. While these jokers hash it out over completely superficial unimportant endorsements, Ron Paul is hard at work debating Ben Bernake to make sure your dollar isn't completely worthless.
