HUCKABEE: NBC/NJ’s Matthew Berger writes in National Journal: “Few people believe that Huckabee will be the Republican nominee for president, but he continues to win rave reviews for his oratory and his talent for connecting with voters. With the race all but sewn up, however, many political analysts are wondering why Huckabee is still in. Earlier, some thought that he was setting himself up to be John McCain's running mate, but that likelihood has faded as Huckabee continues to challenge the front-runner. Now the take is that he is priming himself for a career -- perhaps in television, but definitely in the limelight.”

MCCAIN: The Boston Globe front pages, “Last year, when his campaign was floundering and nearly broke, McCain applied for public financing. Candidates who opt into the system get portions of their privately raised donations matched with taxpayer dollars, but agree to abide by an overall campaign spending limit. This year, the cap for the presidential primaries is about $54 million. But earlier this month, after he became the GOP front-runner and donations began pouring into his campaign, McCain decided to withdraw from the public financing system, even though he had not yet received any public money and his campaign has already spent nearly $50 million. Staying in the system would be crippling. His campaign would not be able to pay for ads, mailings, polls, or travel until September, when the primary campaign officially ends with the party convention.”

“Critics pounced on the announcement, saying it was too late for McCain to back out. And David Mason, the Republican chairman of the FEC, told the candidate that only the commission can decide whether McCain can be released from the federal funding system. But the commission is unable to vote because an impasse in Congress has left it with too few members for a quorum. As a result, McCain is in a bind. His campaign says that he has a right to declare himself out of the system without an FEC ruling and that he will feel free to spend more than the cap allows in coming months. But the dispute has cast a cloud over the self-styled election-finance reformer.”

And the AP has this story: “Sen. John McCain's presidential campaign told federal regulators Monday that he does not need their approval to withdraw from the public finance system for the primaries. The campaign, in a letter to Federal Election Commission Chairman David Mason, also said McCain did not encumber his potential share of public matching funds as collateral for a crucial $4 million loan he obtained late last year.”

Missouri Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill -- an Obama supporter -- introduced a bill that would get rid of any ambiguity about McCain's citizenship status at birth. The legislation would state that any child born to parents serving abroad for the U.S. military would be considered "natural born citizens."

Obama momentum continues.

The Cspan/Reuters/Zogby poll released this morning suggests that Obama's momentum continues.  The polls show a statistical tie in Ohio (Clinton 44%, Obama 42%), while his lead in Texas has grown to 6% (Obama 48%, Clinton 42%).

If these numbers remain static, Obama will likely pick up a few net pledged delegates on Tuesday ... not the breakthrough Clinton needs.  If the momentum trajectory continues, Obama wins both states.

Either way, expect a Clinton concession next week.
This is absolutely why mccain should be crucified...he prattled to all of us about campaign finance and it turns out he doesn't believe anything he tried to impose on the rest of us...a vote for mccain is a vote for bush 3
Gov. Huckabee is not continuing his bid for the White House for any reason other than he is a man of his word – he said that he would continue until someone had the delegates in full to take the nod. Also, he is a leader with conviction. He truly believes in what he stands for and truly believes that it is vital to get the message out to the American people that there is HOPE for true CHANGE.

It is ABSOLUTELY CRITICAL to the success of this nation that everyone has a right to be heard and a right to fight for what they believe in. Because of the fact that he DOES connect with MANY people, it is the American way realized and proven to allow him to continue and to keep his word by not giving up until someone has 'won'...
Self righteous phony mccain. Full of himself and hot air, talks the talk but doesn't walk the walk. Underneath all his BS is nothing but bush all over again-older and no wiser.
yup mac. "to lead this nation with anything but blandness and not with principles is nothing but platitude." Vote Obama 08.
This the problem with McCain.  Even though he has an honorable "war hero" record, he can't hide behind it when taking about campaign financing ethics.  McCain should have to abide by the $54 milllion primary campaign season cap due to him using the promise of getting public funding to secure a private loan for his campaign.  McCain pushed for public financing over the last 15 years but brushes it aside when it applies to him trying to win the nomination.  Very Hypocritical!

Obama in 08!
McCain is using the oldest trick around.  Go after your opponent on the issue you yourself are weakest on.  His is pounding Obama to agree to public funding in the general election, a contest which hasn't even started yet.  At the same time McCain is trying to wiggle out of the public financing of his primary campaign even though HE ALREADY TOOK THAT MONEY.

Straight talk express?  How about Double Talk Express.
Did anyone really think that Huckabee was ever in this for more than himself and to boost his faltering pocketbook?  Once a televangelist always a televangelist.
"Now the take is that he is priming himself for a career -- perhaps in television, but definitely in the limelight"

There are big bucks to be made taking over the televangelist mantel from the Pat Robertson generation.
Cory -
Not much to your claim considering he's the one with the THINNEST pocketbook...

Duh!
Cory and nuanced-
Have either of you ever been to a Huckabee speech? He actually jokes about getting all the religious questions from the media and all...

His platform and what he wants to do to lead this country is based on a strong foundation of faith, but has nothing at all to do with religion!
The Fair Tax and reinvigorating our middle class; redirecting the war on terror without creating more problems by putting our tail between our legs and ignoring the fact that we have to press forward rather than try to turn back the hands of time; changing our healthcare system so that it is not dictated by the insurance/pharm. companies, but rather emphasizes greater responsibility and choice for the consumer with achievable options for everyone - THESE ARE THE REASONS WHY MIKE HUCKABEE CONTINUES TO CAMPAIGN!
I would like someone to help me understand why it is not being talked about concerning the New York Primary mess on Super Tuesday.  There were, I think, about 84 precincts that the numbers came in that Obama had a tally of 0 votes.  Two of these precincts were Harlem and Booklyn that have a very large black population.  Can anyone link me to information or explain why this is not being discussed through the national media?
One difference between Huckabee and Christ is that Huckabee ain't risin' from the dead!
I think McCain's reversal on his own public financing choice weakens his stand against a reversal by Obama for the post primary season.

Though federal financing is a noble goal, I think it really ties the hands of both parties to deal with sleezy, deceptive, negative ads.  And, it forces both parties to rely on groups such as the Swift Boaters and MoveOn to fight for them and gives them no little control over the messages being conveyed.  Not only is this a disservice to the candidates, it's a disservice to the voters who are a deprived of a more comprehensive, issue related debate.

Obama is right to wonder how the 527 groups ads will come into play and what avenues will be provided to each candidate to try to address those.
The McCain FEC problem won't hinge on his using it as collatoral for a loan, he never actually received any money. His problem is that using public financing allows you to waive the costly requirement to gather voter signatures to qualify to get on the ballot in primary states and he did take advantage of this in 8 primary states. By opting out, he actually defrauded the voters in those 8 states by being on the ballot illegally.

Believe me, once Obama wraps up the nomination McCain is going to get hammered on this.
Republicans best (Johnny One Note)seems to be getting mentally and physically weaker each day. Are there very many voters out there that truly believe he will be mentally and/or physically capable to step up to the plate on day one? If he gets elected, on day one he is going to be Air Force One to Fiji to relax for a couple of weeks to recoup some stamina. The man needs assistance now to get off a plane and to climb on a podium. Imagine how much stamina he will have left in November.I don't know how he will ever recover mentally after Barak runs him over during debates.
Zogby is owned by Reuters, which is owned by the globalist elite. You can tell who serves them by who is favored in their "polls". Hey, if the statistical accuracy is 5 points, why not give 4 to your guy and take 4 from that guy who wants to shut down our money makers, our nation control rods, the IRS and Federal Reserve (they are owned by rich families, not the American gov't.)
