Oh-eight (D): Those Dem advantages

Posted: Friday, February 29, 2008 9:15 AM by Mark Murray
Filed Under:

NBC political analyst Charlie Cook writes in his latest National Journal column about the advantages the Democrats have going into the general election -- once their nominee becomes obvious. “My hunch is that the general election will be a very competitive race. However, it’s important not to minimize the Democrats’ inherent advantages. First, it’s extremely difficult for a party to win the White House three elections in a row. Indeed, consider the past 60 years: In four of the five elections in which one party had held the White House for two consecutive terms, that party failed to win a third one. This ‘time for a change’ dynamic has predominated each time. The only exception was in 1988, when Vice President George H.W. Bush was elected at the end of President Reagan’s eight years in office.”

More: “Going into 2008, George W. Bush’s approval ratings hover around 30 percent, 25 percentage points below Reagan’s 20 years ago. Bush’s presidency has been marred by scandals, an unpopular war, and an economy that is just barely skating above recession—hardly ideal for any party wanting to hold onto the White House.”

Also, National Journal's Ron Brownstein looks inside the exit poll numbers and finds, "From New Hampshire to California, and from Arizona to Wisconsin, exit polls from this year’s contests show the Democratic coalition evolving in clear and consistent ways since the 2004 primaries that nominated John Kerry. The party is growing younger, more affluent, more liberal, and more heavily tilted toward women, Latinos, and African-Americans. In the 18 states for which exit polls are available from both 2004 and 2008, the share of the Democratic vote cast by young people has risen, often by substantial margins.”

Former Bush '04 adviser Matthew Dowd is particularly concerned about the growing youth vote for the Dems. "Dowd says that even if McCain wins, Republicans should still worry about these trends, especially among young people… In 2000, under-30 voters split about evenly between Bush and Gore, according to exit polls. In 2004, they preferred Kerry over Bush by 54 percent to 45 percent. In the 2006 House elections, they backed Democrats by 60 percent to 38 percent. In a race between Obama, 46, and McCain, 71, even many Republicans wouldn’t be surprised to see that wide a gap among the young. ‘If you look at Ronald Reagan and how he performed among youth, he created a generation of Republicans that was able to sustain itself,’ Dowd says. ‘Well, what Bush has done in his presidency is almost the opposite: He has won elections and lost a generation. Now this generation is emerging, and if Democrats end up winning this election, and then govern in a way that gives people a sense that it is a new politics, they will have a generation. It will be the reverse of Reagan.’”

CLINTON: The Boston Globe’s Helman writes that Clinton “misstated [Obama’s] healthcare views before an audience yesterday in rural Ohio” yesterday. "I want . . . each and every member of the family to have health insurance. My opponent only wants your children to have health insurance," she said. "I don't think that's smart." Clinton has a mandate to require everyone to purchase healthcare. Obama has a mandate for parents to purchase health care for children. Clinton defended her characterization of Obama’s plan, saying, Obama "he was not willing to go the distance with a universal healthcare plan. ... I was drawing that distinction, and I think it's a fair one."

The New York Daily News writes, “While Hillary Clinton wages the fight of her political life, her campaign architects are at war trying to save their reputations. The blame game between chief strategist Mark Penn and her top political svengali, Harold Ickes, has burst into the open as Clinton's poll numbers plunge.”

OBAMA: The New York Times: "For much of this year, Mr. Obama has been handled with relative care by Mrs. Clinton and, before they dropped out, the other Democratic candidates. They generally do not have huge policy differences with him, and they have been wary of making a particularly harsh attack that winds up in a Republican television advertisement this fall. Yet the shifting tone offers a glimpse of the Republican playbook as the party adapts to the prospect that it will be running against Mr. Obama rather than Mrs. Clinton."

More: "Mr. Obama’s record is not as long as Mrs. Clinton’s, or as potentially rich, for an opponent looking for damaging votes or quotes. But there is still plenty to work with. Some cases are simple let’s-go-to-the-video moments, like Mr. Obama’s statements that he would support giving drivers’ licenses to illegal aliens or would support raising taxes to shore up Social Security, lines of attacks that Republicans are already employing. Others — like a suggestion that Mr. Obama opposed the USA Patriot Act or supported a ban on handguns — might be subject to dispute by Mr. Obama, who would argue they were yanked out of context or did not take into account the subtleties of shaping legislation. (Nuance is usually a weak defense in political campaigns.)"

The Dallas Morning News notes Obama spent yesterday focused on McCain. "Throughout the day, the Illinois senator pursued a double-barreled attack on Mr. Bush and John McCain, marking an effort to let Democratic voters try him on for size ahead of Tuesday's primary. He spent the day mocking the current and would-be Republican president as oblivious to the inequities of the tax cuts they espouse, and slow to remedy or even notice joblessness, stagnant wages and spiraling health care costs."

And in front of a mostly black audience last night, Obama did his best Bill Cosby impersonation, saying "that parents need to shape up, turn off the TV, help their kids with their homework and stop letting them grow fat eating Popeyes chicken for breakfast."

Time's Thornburgh asks, "So who gets to say Hussein? At the Oscars, host Jon Stewart took innuendo about as far as it can go, saying that Barack Hussein Obama running today is like a 1940's candidate named Gaydolph Titler. But that reference, served up to a crowd that presumably swoons for Obama, got laughs. So maybe the H-word is more like the N-word: you can say it, but only if you are an initiate. Blacks can use the N-word; Obama supporters can use the H-word."

The Financial Times notes that Obama's economic rhetoric has shifted left ever since John Edwards left the race.

NBC’s Andy Merten, writing on MSNBC.com, notes that although both Clinton and McCain have blasted Obama on the issue of Pakistan, “there’s some recent evidence that suggests Obama’s idea of unilateral strikes within Pakistan’s borders may not be that different from current U.S. actions. Last week, The Washington Post reported that in late January, a CIA aircraft fired on several buildings in the Pakistani town of Mir Ali, killing a senior al-Qaida commander and several others.” More: “‘The reality is that any president, Republican or Democrat, will unilaterally go after a target when the intelligence is good,’ he said, adding, ‘You’re not attacking an ally; you’re attacking a de facto sanctuary.’”

Any other news?
Facts and the truth are only inconveniences to the Clintons.

I mean after all, why let facts get in the way when you can spin and smear instead?  Bush has shown you can go an entire two terms ignoring facts.  Senator Clinton consistently demonstrates she's willing to do the same.
For anyone who thinks Obama isn’t “tuff “ enough:

Just look at this week.

It started with a jab at his race of all things with that picture the Clinton Campaign sent out. Tuesday, Hillary tried everything and anything in the debate and he came out the winner. Then a McCain supporter tried to raise Xenophobia because of his name. The rest of the week he’s fighting a three front battle with Hillary Clinton, George W Bush, and John McCain over foreign policy.

And what’s the result? Obama is in a better position today than when the week started. How many politicians do you know that could do that?

Politicians, pundits, strategists can’t figure out why nothing “sticks” to Obama. I’ll tell them why. He has the ultimate trump card; INTEGRITY.
And yet, no mention of the Dims splitting their party in two with a very negative campaign by both Hill and Bar. McCain, and his VP choice, will be campaigning all summer while Clinton and Barack are still arguing. Also, no mention in the article of how liberal both Hillary and Barack are. Pretty hard to win the presidency without the middle.
Hillary is quoted above saying: "My opponent only wants your children to have health insurance," ...wow, the health insurance issue is supposed to be her strong point yet she feels compelled to resort to that kind of mis-statement, no wonder superdelegates are moving away from her. She's really hurting herself by continuing this way.
HUSSEIN Obama is going down. He's already down in the polls to McCain and losing Florida by double-digits.
George W Bush is more than a little concerned at the idea of an Obama Presidency. An honest man in the WhiteHouse with a thorough working knowledge of and respect for the Constitution....uh oh George, feeling not quite so smug?
Hillary Clinton is talking the truth about Obama's healthcare promise - there is no smear in that.  Obviously, the Obama cult hates the truth because it reveals cult leader Obama is all about empty, lying rhetoric.
Mark Samuels said: "HUSSEIN Obama is going down"...wow that's briliant Mark, think of it yourself? You need counseling for your irrational fears. Who taught you that hate & fear? Please look in the mirror and ask yourself why you are so hateful.
To imply that Obama doesn't want adults to have heath care is ridiculous.
HUSSEIN Obama is hateful. He hangs around with anti-American, anti-semetic bigots.  Obama is also one of the most corrupt politicians in the country. Aske him about Rezko.
My favorite Seinfeld episode was when George's life dramatically improved once he began to do the opposite of what he would normally do. That's the way I look at this election. I hope the Republicans do everything possible to show how opposite Obama is from them. Everytime we see McCain, or better yet, Bush condescendingly deride Obama's ideas on foreign policy, diplomacy and leadership, it just serves to highlight what bumbling idiots have been in charge fot the last eight years.

In my opinion its about time we got off the Bush/McCain road to hell and charted a new course. A hard left is fine with me. Hey, it's the opposite!

I am voting for McCain because I fear Obama's "change" for my daughters.  He will bring Sharia law to America
Does McCain or Hillary really want voters to believe that they won't strike the Taliban in Pakistan or anywhere else if needed?  McCain will strike anyone at any time for any reason...anyone EXCEPT the Taliban in Pakistan?  He'll fight a war in Iraq, he'll start one w/ Iran, but he won't strike the Taliban in Pakistan?  Either he's incredibly stupid or incredibly disingenuous.  Hillary, we know, isn't stupid.
McCain.....Is a Walmart somewhere missing their "greeter"?
I am a wealthy Democrat.  I voted for Clinton in the past.  I am for Obama this election cycle.  I do not have any qualms with HRC nor BHO.  I pose two questions to any potential defecting Dems, Indies, or R's.  I will do well with the Bush tax cuts, will you?  Furthermore, do you really want to be stuck in Iraq for 100 years more?
Do we really want an Islamist like Obama to head America? Talk about letting the enemy within our gates.
I am disgusted by Obama's hatred of white Americans and of our military veterans.  He is vile.
Susan, you're ridiculous. Obama rarely mentions race and he doesn't hate white americans. Half of his family is white.
Folks like Susan belong in a rubber room. They are totally detached from reality.
BARAC is the name of a famous Hebrew warrior. Debora is the strong woman, profetess, and leader who gave him direction. It's in the book of Judges of the Hebrew Bible or Old Testament. I am happy for the continued Dem compaign. It keeps our two strong persons, Hillary and Barack, bringing the headlines of the ineptitude of the Republican leadership to the attention of all. And, both are leaders who are calling for change. We cannot continue along the conservative line of thinking. We must think boldly and call the nation to change. We must meet new challenges. Thanks to Hillary and Barac(k) we have a chance to do that. Go Democrats. Get the country moving. Reposition our greatness in the world, and not just a military greatness. Get the budget back under control. Protect the common good of all citizens. Educate the young. Strengthen our relations with our neighbors on our street and on our boarders. The "common good." A phrase hardly known or talked about anymore. Too bad it is not a campaign message and measure of our greatness. Democrats....unite! Vote for Hillary or Barack but, vote Democrat. We cannot afford John McCain and a retreat into the past. McCain hauled out Jim Baker. It's his style of foreign policy that got us into so much trouble before. Everytime McCain brings out another old fart (even older than I am)it should be a clear sign to all that he is rooted in and suffering from a conservatism that cannot see into the future with open eyes. He cannot find a new direction.
Goodness, Susan, I'm afraid you are misinformed about Senator Obama.  He helped make sure our veterans didn't have to pay for food and phone calls while patients at Walter Reed, for example.  Factual information abounds if you are actually interested in it.
FARRAKHAN: STICK WITH OBAMA
REPUBLICANS WILL BE IN THE WHITE HOUSE AGAIN IF OBAMA GETS NOMINATION.
FACT NOT FICTION
I AND MANY OTHERS WILL NEVER FOLLOW A MAN WHO WAVIERED ON DENOUNING FARRAKHAN. THE NEXT WAS WAY TO LATE. IT MADE MANY FEEL THAT HE NEEDED TO MAKE A PHONE CALL TO EXPLAIN WHY HE WAS GOING TO SAY MORE.
WAKE UP....
"(Nuance is usually a weak defense in political campaigns.)"

Hey!! I resent that.  Bush saying he doesn't do nuance is a strong defense.
Susan-Your stupity and VILE rascist thought process is crystal clear. Islam is not the enemy. Corporate fascism is more scary. The Shrub's buddy is the Saudi royal family with their schools that teach hatred towards Americans. 911 terrorists were Saudi's. Stop watching fox news!
Read the above comments and it is abundantly clear that the election comes down to fear versus hope.
Hillary Clinton is the most qualified, most electable candidate in the race. Her credentials are second to none. Obama is unknown, untested, and unqualified. A vote for Obama now is a vote for McCain in November. Obama is unelectable in November. When the media adulation ends (and it will) Obama will be burnt toast. The corporate owned media will see to that. Hillary is tough, she's been beaten down by the media, attacked 24/7 and yet she still stands strong.

Hillary has proven she can win big in the big states that are the must wins for Dems in November. Ohio loves Hillary and you can't win the Presidency without winning Ohio. Hillary is the superior candidate.

V O T E  S M A R T !   V O T E   H I L L A R Y  !

My fellow Dems, don't be duped by the corporate owned media promotion of Obama (it's temporary, they'll turn on him and prove him unelectable) they are working with their republican pals to bring down Hillary. The GOP is urging their republican voters across the nation (pushing REALLY hard in Texas) to "do their duty" and vote for Obama now and McCain in November. In Texas, you have to vote "twice" voting in a primary earlier in the day and "caucussing later in the day" It's a crazy, unfair system. The Republicans can so easly exploit it and they are trying mightily to scue the vote in Texas to Obama. I believe, however, that the real Dem voters are smart and will turn out in droves for Hillary.

GO HILLARY!!!!
I have noticed that a fair amount of you have been attacking 'Susan,' and with good reason, but the most erroneous thing that she stated has not even been addressed:  Obama is NOT a Muslim. I'm not saying that being a Muslim is a bad thing, but people need to stop being so easily mislead.  There are far too many sheep out there, wake up and look for alternative news outlets, not just the corporate media.  Before you make a remark, be sure it is not asinine and completely FALSE. thank you./
Everytime I see someone try to invoke fear with they use of Baracks beautiful middle name.....I simply go and find 5 unregistered voters and get them ready for November.  If everyone that blogs would take the time to find someoen that isnt registered, educate them, and even if they dont vote yourway...they might...we can combat the idiots out there that use fear-mongering tactics.
ONLY ONE CAN BRING THIS COUNTRY TO THE RIGHT PLACE:
H   I   L   L  A  R   Y      C  L  I  N  T  O  N

STOP THE GENDER ISSUE, STOP BEING CONTROLED BY THE MEDIA AND THE MACHO ISSUE,  VOTE HILLARY CLINTON
IF YOU THINK TO VOTE FOR OBAMA...i really hope you can look beyond the nice speech and the "inspirational" "momentum" he is having.  brother, Obama is not ready to be president.  yes, the media is pushing for  him, only for one reason, to get ready of clinton, but guess what?  when the general election come, tehy will laugh at him, they are going to detroy him, becasue his record is pool, notihng to show up, nothing that he can really compite with Mccain.  brother, if you see and analize his speech, it is jsut word, nice words, very likeable guy, but no specific plan.  just look what he did durign the election, in many questions, he jsut said, "Hillary is right".  why?  for one signle reason, when the person dont have a understanding of something, usually go by what the other person said, to avoind confrontation and avoid that the other person find out that tehy dont know.
It is great, he is AA, nice, young, likeable, but it doesnt make the persona  good president.  jsut think who has more experience, better plan, more prepare?  that is why republican is pushing for Obama, becasue it will be easier to win agaisnt him.
one more thing, dont beleif on those reports, that obama can beat Mccain,   you never know who really answer those question, may be republican, trying to encourage him to keep going... but.. hey, is your choice, jsut hope that for the safe of this country, we dont bring another bush to the white house.
I would really like to know why Americans are voting for a man that kived in a Moslem country with his mother and father both practicing the religion, when we have a capable women running that is a true American. Is his both parents American citizens. I am a Republican and would vote for Clinton but not Obama. The only reason people are voting for him is because he talks in circles and does not state his intentions to me he is only a good speaker and that excites the people

When Barack speaks, if you all would listen, you hear the underpinnings of some of his most important work.  He speaks to all Americans and professes a message of lifting America up beyond the pettiness and vileness currently stewing in DC. This is his message and it goes beyond hope.  His work in government reflect what he talks.  He walks his talk.  He is the author of the toughest ethics reform to date and hasn't taken a dime of PAC or lobbyist money.  He will owe his Presidency to us American and not to Corporations.  Do you all realize how huge that is and how much power money has in DC?  He has shown the integrity to walk his talk and those who are interested enough to look beyond the rhetoric have been shocked.  Here is a politician you can respect and admire at all level.  How amazing. He demonstrates an integrity beyond any other politician I have ever looked into and has my vote.  Please read between the lines and beyond the pundits.
G O  O B A M A --- We need you.
Actually McCain wasn't born in America and may not be able to be President.  I have heard he was born in another country.  And Obama is Christian, not Muslim.  You all are brainwashed by the pundits.  You can look beyond that or maybe you cannot.  I have to wonder if it maybe easier for some people to grab onto some kind of Muslim propaganda than look to at their own subconscious racist tendencies.  It must be very difficult to deal with the fact that you may be a racist bigot.  I can't imagine that would make you feel good about yourself.
We know hispanics are voting for Clinton and blacks are voting for Obama. Who are muslims voting for?
AT LEAST HILLARY HAS BEEN ABLE TO JUNGLE BETWEEN BEING A NEW-YORK SENATOR AND AND WORKING TOWARDS BECOMING A DEM. NOMINEE. OBAMA AS A CHAIRMAN OF THE SUB-COMMITTEE IN EU AFFAIR HAS LEFT OUR MILITARY AND NATO TO DIED IN THE DESERT OF AFGANISTAN WITHOUT EVEN ORGANIZING A HEARING ON HOW TO IMPROVE THE WAR IN AFGANISTAN BECAUSE HE HAS BEEN SO BUSY TRYING TO WIN THE NOMINATION. 4 YEARS OF OBAMA IN THE WHITE HOUSE WILL BE 4 YEARS OF WORKING TOWARS HIS RE-ELECTION. AMERICA IS NOT HIS PRIORITY. WINNING AN ELECTION IS HIS DREAM.

The ignorance and appalling bigotry of some commenters on this board explains why right-wing hatemongers keep calling Obama by his middle name----it works. Too many Americans can be counted on to believe the falsehoods perpetuated by the right. If you don't like Obama's stand on the issues, that's one thing, but don't try to destroy his chances with unsubstantiated rumors and outright lies. He is a patriotic American who is no more a Muslim than Rush Limbaugh  (not that there's anything wrong with being a Muslim). He wouldn't be talking about destroying al queda and the Taliban in Pakistan if he wanted to institute Sharia law here. His voting record is strong on aid to Israel, which would not be the case if he was an ally of Farrakhan's. Wake up, and see beyond your petty prejudices. And by the way, I voted for Clinton in the primary, just can't stand bigots!
Obama is a christian, not a muslim.  Even were he a muslim, that's got nothing to do with how he would govern for ALL america, which honors (or is supposed to) the strict separation of church and state.
That being said, my questions about Obama, having NOTHING to do with his religion, race or name, is:
Center for Responsive Politics has discovered that the candidate who gets their support tends to be the one who gave them the most money:
Total Clinton contributions to all superdelegates: $236,080
Total Obama contributions to all superdelegates: $710,926

Question: If Obama’s such a wondrous, moving, obvious choice, and all these superdelegates are defecting in swarms to him out of sheer enthrallment, is it simply nothing more than mere coincidence that Obama has “donated” MORE THAN 3 TIMES the money to said same superdelegates than Hillary Clinton (and having said that and paid that, still has received less than half of the committments from same superdelegates)?
Is it also only coincidence that many of the same superdelegates who just happen to be African American are now complaining of coercive tactics from - not the Clinton camp - but from the Obama people, using everything from threats to charges of being “Uncle Toms”?
