Clinton's 'red phone moment'?

From NBC's Domenico Montanaro
In a conference call with reporters, the Obama campaign pushed back against Clinton's newest ad. The ad, running in Texas, shows children sleeping and an announcer says, "It's 3 a.m., and your children are safe and asleep. Who do you want answering the phone?"

Obama campaign manager David Plouffe said, "She had her red-phone moment; she had it in 2002," when she and President Bush voted for the war.

The red phone reference is to an ad run by Walter Mondale in the Democratic primary against Gary Hart.

"We don't think the ad's going to be effective at all," Plouffe also said, continuing, "she's already had her red-phone moment… she answered affirmatively" on her vote to authorize the use of force in Iraq. "She did not read the NIE, so she did not do her homework either."

When asked repeatedly about the ad on the call, Plouffe focused on "judgment."

"Sen. Clinton's red-phone moment in her career was in 2002," he said again. "And she supported the Iraq war, supported president Bush. ... Ultimately an ad like this is going to make people focus on judgment."

Some of the highlights of the Clinton's foreign policy and its achievements.
1. American service members naked dead bodies being dragged through the streets of Mogadishu after team Clinton denied them the equipment & support they needed to accomplish their mission.
Soon after the remaining forces were withdrawn in what has become known as our first lost battle in the war against al-Qaeda and Islamic extremism.
2. Rwanda is anything but genocide.
What may be the supreme example of the worthlessness of human life when forced to compete in the semantic driven world of team Clinton.
3. We respect international law.
That is except when we bomb the embassy of a nation with the veto power at the United Nations Security Council.
4. That long term deployments of American armed forces to places like Haiti are in our strategic national interests.
5. Spending time before Monica on the Israeli Palestinian peace process was a waste of time.
6. Reducing the military by 40% and calling it a peace dividend was in the strategic national interests of America.
7. Changing the role of the Guard & Reserve from a strategic reserve to an operational reserve because it is more cost effective.
The results of # 6 & 7 are out there or the entire world to see.
8. That the best way to fight Islamic Extremism was to ignore it.
Hence the reason two of our embassies were bombed in Africa post Somalia and Islamic extremism was able to rage unchecked throughout the 1990's. A few cruise missiles excepted.
9. The unabashed belief that failure to support "W"'s war in Iraq would leave you open to charges that you were soft on national security and nobody is gonna call Hillary soft on anything.
Hence the reason so many in America lay the deaths and maiming of thousands of Americans and hundreds of thousands of Iraqi's right at the Clinton's feet.
If they has courage and conviction of belief they would have stood on principal and damn the torpedoes.
Unfortunately for America's service members and their loved ones the Clinton's could not be bothered with trivialities like reading the intelligence reports or taking a principled stand that would stand up to the test of time.
This is the Clinton's foreign policy in a nut shell.
It does not stand up to the test of time.
I would be happy for Hillary to get the call.  Why has no one brought forth the fact that Obama was not a Senator when the vote took place, sure he opposed the war but he was not privy to the same information as our government officials.  He might have had a different opinion if he had.
This Clinton ad is ridiculous. I wonder how many children watching it will have nightmares wondering what is happening and how many of their parents will be trying to reassure them.

It is a pure scare tactic and a desperate attempt to frighten voters. How sad!

Barack Obama is the person I want answering the phone. His calm, thoughtful manner, combined with his brilliance, is comforting to me.
The "red phone" rings and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs tells President HRC that satellite intelligence indicates that China is about to invade Taiwan in the next 8 hours and asks "What do we do?  President HRC grimaces and responds: "WHY DO I ALWAYS GET THE FIRST QUESTION???  DON"T YOU KNOW HOW HARD IT IS FOR ME TO BE THE FIRST WOMAN IN THIS POSITION?"
I WILL PUT MY MESSAGE ALL IN CAPS THAT WAY IT WILL LOOK EVEN MORE STUPID. I AM A HILLARY SUPPORTER, I AM ANGRY - GRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!  C'mon people, Hillary has divided our party long enough.  How the heck is she going to embrace Obama after all her paltry mud slinging and pitiful attempts at character assassination?
J. Merle Stanley - at the time Obama was stating he was against the war, he was running for the Senate seat he now holds.  So, he did have something to lose when he made the decision, he could have lost the race for Senator.  The question is, was the U.S. in danger of Saddam or Bin Laden.  I think you know the answer was Bin Laden, who by the way, was not in Iraq.  Duh!  If she was voting in the best interest of OUR safety, then she would have argued that we should have went after Bin Laden, who was in Afghanastan not Iraq.
Hillary could not even think of a contingency plan beyond super Tuesday and she wants to answer the Red Phone at 3 AM? Which hillary would answer that phone, the angry Hillary (red dress), the teary Hillary (blue dress), the sarcastic Hillary (yellow dress), the victim Hillary (flower dress).

Enough already!
Here is thought for everyone. It's 3am, and it's Raoul Castro, Ahmbhinahjad, Hamas, Hezballah. Who but only Barak Obama would take the call! Better yet, Osama Bin Laden is calling, who but only Obama would take the call! We must be willing to talk to our enemies.
Obama was asked 4 years ago about running for president and he said he wanted someone with experience for the job (not himself) ...So what has he learned or what has he done to gain that experience in the 4 years since???

This ad simply clarifies her(the)point!

Better take a long hard look before you vote for someone that will surely not win against Mccain. We already know everything about Hillary...the Bill stuff is old.

But the arsenal for Obama is full of everything from anti semetic ties to his nut-job minister to charges of gay sex with limo drivers. Get ready Obamadrones! This guy has not been tested  or put through the ringer yet. He has been given pretty much a free pass by the media.

The viciousness and mean spirited attacks on Hillary by Obama supporters has turned me off to him and the whole process. I will vote for Nader if he is on the ballot or maybe nobody at all. I am a dem and I don't want Mccain but I think he will win in the national election.

The Democrats are losers no matter what because if either Hillary gets the nom or Obama, one side within the party will be angry and will feel like they lost. That means alot of people will probably just not vote.
NOBAMA!
for those idiots who dont what the "redphone" means, its a reference to the supposed red phone that holds the key to sending nuclear war heads to another nation and starting WWIII, or answering or reatliating against a nation that has already sent them our way. I love that everyone's memory is so jaded that they cant think back to the Iraq war vote. Our country had come under attack and everyone was gung ho on revenge in this country. The minority of politicians that were against it on principle were considered to be weak and cowering at the time. It is easy for Barack Obama to throw it in Clintons face now that the war was an obvious mistake.  However, if it had turned out to be a great victory for the US, it would be just as easy for obama to say he supported it because frankly, he was a nobody on the national stage at the time and who cared what he had to say. Its too late obviously as the media has accomplished what tehy set out to do, and the doe eyed loonies have already been programmed and will never change their monds. I just hope that Baracak Obama is truly going to know what to do when and if becomes president, as it is apparent this wild experiment has taken a life of its own and now we the american people are going to have go through this with this novice and hope he does the right thing.  Remember the " right thing" isnt always the RIGHT thing. The presidnet of the US cannot be a pacifist, nor can he walk through his term with rose colored glasses. I expect we will see alot of him on TV givin speeched and reassuring us. But I just hope that once the mic is off, he is really knows what the hell he is doing.... For ALL of our sakes. God help us.
Come on people, no matter who you support, you gotta be impressed by how quick the Obama campaign have been with all the attacks against him, not only from Clinton, but from McCain, Bush, and other outside forces.

I'm just saying.
Obama is our Savior. Please everyone, we must rally around Michelle and Barak so they can change evil an america. Racist america oppressed Michelle when she went to Princeton and Harvard. Lets us give her something to be proud of. Barak can treaty with our muslim brothers and apologize for a arrogant america.
"The Democrats are losers no matter what because if either Hillary gets the nom or Obama, one side within the party will be angry and will feel like they lost. That means alot of people will probably just not vote. NOBAMA!" Michee

If what you say is true then why didn't you end your post with No Bama and No Hillary instead of just No Bama?
When does Hillary, take responsibility for Hillary?
Obama is our savior???????

oh my how scary is that?  This is a presidential campaign not the second coming of Christ
It has to be Bill that answers the phone because it would be Hillary calling the Red Phone asking Bill to get her out of another awful situation that she created for herself. Orrrr.... it could be Obama who answers the phone because Hillary finally conceded knowing she couldn't win the nomination and she is  calling Obama seeking his advice when running for NY Senator again as to how one should conduct themselves in a campaign.
Here's the thing, no who wins the Democratic nomination, I will support them.  For those Hillary supporters who say they will vote for McCain if Obama is the nominee, is not a true Democratic.  Why would you turn against your party just because your candidate didn't win the nomination.  That is ridiculous!
Well, I certainly don't want the Anti-Christ Obama answering the phone!

Because I am a Hillary supporter obviously! Did you read the first part of my post? That is why I will not vote for Obama in the national election.

NOBAMA!

When there is decision has to be made, Obama responded 130 times - "present".

S C A R Y!!!!!
Up until a few weeks ago I was a supporter of Obama. It was not until I heard him in a speech after the South Carolina primary where I started to get really turned off.  In a speech he said 'This is not about the color of ones skin, not about who is more liberal or conservative..  but about the clear choices we all must make'  --yet, only four sentences later he answered a question posed by a reporter about his 'electability' and he promptly stated 'Her people will vote for me but Im am not so sure my people will vote for her (referring of course to Clinton)'.  Would someone please tell me what he means by 'MY PEOPLE'?  Because from all his speeches, we are not democrats or republicans, liberals or conservatives, etc, etc.... we are "Americans" yet.... "his' people" won't vote for Clinton --IF she is the democratic nominee?

So much for his "we are all Americans" speech...
I am totally 100% not a supporter of his any longer.

Also, in his debate in Austin TX he stated he 'would meet leaders of the world without conditions' yet.. three seconds after this statement he said... 'But there must be preparation'.  So what does 'without conditions' and 'must be preparation' mean... exactly?

I’m just tired of the double talk and the games he seems to like to play. I really do believe the world is so caught up in his ‘motivation’ speeches that they seem to ignore the fact that he does not give specific information regarding his policies. He said in the Ohio debate that ‘he was going to get the people involved in this country to help congress push through programs that are needed to help the citizens of this country’.  WHAT DOES THIS MEAN ?  Does this mean we the people just show up on the doorstep of congress one day and say ‘Hey… lets get this done’?  I mean is Obama really serious?
Folks… wake up and smell the recession!

I am not willing to cast my vote for another 4 years of a “ learn as you go program”  I have already lived through 7 years of witnessing what inexperience has done to this country.
I am curious how the Hillary supporters who decried David Shuster now find it ok to call Senator Obama "Pimp Daddy B." Second off, anyone who asks why Barack votes to fund the troops who are in Iraq is an idiot and should not be allowed out of the house without protection. He is trying to save lives stupid!

Second, to J. Merle Stanley:

I have seen some low things for you but this is the worst. HOW DARE YOU say that because someone lives in Texas, they weren't attacked on 9-11. THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA was attacked you pea-headed prick and just because you live in New York doesn't mean you were attacked anymore then someone in Texas or Ohio, or Hawaii for that matter. I know this is hard for you Hillary fans to fathom, but New York is only one of fifty states in this country, and you people are certainly not that special.
All of you who are saying "Clinton's phone rang back in 2002" are technically right.  However, you fail to mention that Obama's phone DIDN'T ring.  Why?  Because he wasn't in the Senate at that time and getting the EXPERIENCE HE SHOULD HAVE BEEN GETTING.

All you Obama supporters who say "he didn't vote for the war" are as naive and mindless as a toddler.  Of course he didn't vote for the war, HE WASN'T IN THE SENATE AT THE TIME THE VOTE WAS TAKEN.

PLEASE WAKE UP FROM FANTASY LAND AND REALIZE OBAMA IS NOT READY TO LEAD THIS NATION AND FIX ALL OF THE PROBLEMS FROM THE BUSH ADMINISTRATION.
In regard to Sen. Clinton voting for IRAQ... does anyone else get the point that not only did she vote for IRAQ... but also 98 out of 100 Senators also voted for Iraq??

I guess ALL other 98 Senators were wrong too?
Folks.. wake UP and see the whole picture and not just one section...

HILLARY IS THE BEST CHOICE FOR ACTUAL SOLUTIONS !!
Well, at this moment, negative ads wont matter. America hast woken up to a new call. Its a global awareness. Several million voters cant be disillusioned. We have several people investing in the democratic party for one maain reason. The phone has been ringing for the past 7 years for a new change and no one picked it up. If America goes in this new direction, we wont have to bother picking up the phone at 3am. There will be peace in America.
All i know is that John Macain will be sound asleep at 3am, so both Hillary and Barack should start planning for America the right way and stop all these negative ads. We are about tired of them all right now.
Hillary is paying her campaign people millions of dollars and lending them money from her secret stash and for what?

Why is she dressed at 3:am.

Why is she using republican scare tactics and our children against a fellow democrat?

I don't know which Hillary will answer the phone, do you?

It might have been more believable if she was laying in bed answering the phone.

Obama "08"
I am a 65 year old white male, and it has been said that a person like Obama, if your lucky, comes by once in a lifetime. I feel very lucky, because I was blessed to witness John Kennedy, and now Obama. I support Obama 100%, but now it is time for a new generation to be inspired with the message of Hope and Change. Our time is Now, don't let it slip through your fingers. I have nothing against McCain or Clinton, but they had their time, and do not represent any change whatsoever. Sure hope that others agree, it might be a very very long time before another Kennedy or Obama comes along. Peace brothers and sisters.
She is right to draw attention to dangerous situation around the world and her readiness to deal. Obama is a lightweight and there's a big difference here between them. It's easy to speechify - what has he done since entering office? Same as Hillary on Iraq, and doing nothing on Afghanistan when he has the power and says it's the key crisis.
hillary is dreesing like that at 3.a.m
people racist don't like obama
How many ADOLPH LIVING IN THIS COUNTRY AND ARE CHRISTIAN
ADOLPH HITTLER WAS CATHOLIC..
Nice Joshua. At least he was there. Where has Hill been???? She has missed the most votes in the senate.
Here is more drivel from Camp Hill.

Clinton: Obama a 'blank screen'
Posted: 11:26 AM ET
ALT TEXT

(CNN) — Hillary Clinton Thursday jabbed at Sen. Barack Obama for being a first term senator and called her rival for the Democratic presidential nomination a "blank screen."

In an interview on ABC's Nightline Thursday night, Clinton dismissed notion's Barack Obama voters are uninformed, but said the Democratic presidential front-runner aptly described himself in his 2006 book, "The Audacity of Hope."

"I think the best description, actually, is in Barack's own book, the last book he wrote, 'Audacity of Hope,' where he said that he's a blank screen," she said in the interview. "And people of widely differing views project what they want to believe onto him. And then he went on to say, 'I am bound to disappoint some, if not all of them.'"

"He was in the state Senate, what, three years ago, four years ago?" Clinton said in continued jabs. "It's hard to know exactly what his positions are because they have changed rather rapidly in that four-year period. But there is something very appealing, and people have a right to vote for whomever they want."

The comments came a day before the Clinton campaign launched a tough new ad in Texas that aims to portray Clinton as considerably more prepared to handle a foreign policy crises than Obama. Over scenes of sleeping children, the ads narrator asks, "Who do you want answering the phone the phone?" at 3 in the morning.

Obama Campaign Manager David Plouffe forcefully responded to that ad in a conference call with reporters Friday morning.

"We don't think the ads are going to be effective at all, because Senator Clinton has already had her red phone moment. It was a decision whether to allow George Bush to invade Iraq, and she answered affirmatively," Plouffe said.
the reason this ad is unimpressive is, well, for starters, almost a complete rehash of her supporter walter mondale's actual red-phone ad against obama supporter gary hart. aside from belaboring the whole pot-meet-kettle issues about originality, it is an afront to the voters who are tired of being scared into voting for/against. this is what led us to being stripped slowly of our consistutional rights. anybody think we would have been so blase about haebus corpus if our government hadn't scared us into letting them have more control? that's the ultimate issue here. fisa, guantanamo, the 1st, 4th, 5th, 6th and 10th amendments -- while we entertain ourselves over stupid "political" issues like obama's middle name or mccain's age or clinton's ad, the real issues aren't being addressed by the media. frankly, the fact that obama's a constitutional scholar/professor makes me favor him, because he's brought the issues of citizens' rights to the forefront. read the constitution, people. get reacquainted with your rights and your role in YOUR government.
Sunny, I need to correct your ridiculous comment. Obama voted present 130 times out of 4000 votes or Roughly 3% of his total votes. Also, voting present in IL is a legislative tool, not a way to duck the issue.

Misrepresent much?...
All this talk about Senator Clinton's Iraq vote ignores the context of her vote.  It happened about a year after September 11th when New York was still in shock.  For about 18 months after that day I would hear a police or fire siren and I would turn around and go into instant checklist mode:  where are my children? where's my husband? did my parents come into the city today? would everyone remember where our meeting point is?  will my cell phone work?

Senator Clinton is the senator of New York and that includes New York City.  As my representative and the representative for all New Yorkers, her responsibility was to us first and the rest of the country second.  And remember that she wasn't the only senator to authorize the war - there were 76 other senators who voted for the war which means that your senator (and your representative) probably authorized the war as well.

So everyone (and especially those who aren't from the New York are), please please think about what it was like for us all who were living here during that time...  I like Senator Obama but is he himself sure he wouldn't have voted for the war if he were a senator during that moment in time, was representing New Yorkers who had just been attacked and had the information that the rest of the Senate was privy to?   It's easy to say "That decision was wrong..." but hindsight is 20-20 and there's no such thing as a do-over in politics.  At least Senator Clinton understood that and moved forward just like my city.
Clinton and Obama just have no real views.  They both just pander to the polls.

Vote for real change in '08.

Nader/Gonzalez
If comments here are reflective of the general mood in the party, the Democratic party will lose the general election.  There's too much bitterness between the Obama and Clinton camps.  The party may be fractured beyond repair and this saddens me.
Yep. She lost her chance to make the right decision when the phone rang in 2002. Again in 2008, she attacks Obama's idea on Packistan. Amazingly, Bush followed Obama's idea and succeeded.  That's leadership on Obama's part.  I will vote for Obama.
Obama please tell them what to do.
As someone who has supported the Clintons in the past, I am so sad to see this hideous as. Maybe Republicans were right that they will do anything to win an election. This fearmongering ad is a desperate tactic that should be beneath the Clintons.

But it is good for a laugh: why is Hillary wearing glasses and business attire at 3 am?

I am so proud to be part of the Obama campaign, which is disproving the notion that fear trumps hope. By appealing to our better angels, he is winning. God bless him for it. Only a few more months until Bush is gone!
Who is Hillary Clinton gonna call if a crisis call comes at 3:00 AM?  GHOSTBUSTERS?

Like her husband, Hillary Clinton needs polls to guide her to a decision.  She has no attachment to any position, no leadership qualities and no principles to guide her.

If experience may be relied upon to judge the character of our next president and their ability to deliver "solutions" then let's look at the records of Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton.

Barack Obama secured bipartisan support for health-care reform and passage of low-income tax credits and child care subsidies in the Illinois legislature.

In Hillary Clinton's eight (8) years in the Senate, the Congressional Record (www.thomas.gov) shows she "sponsored" only two (2) pieces of legislation that were presented to the president for signature.  The first piece of legislation (S. 1241) was to establish a historic site in New York state, the second (S. 3613) was to name a U.S. Postal Service building.

When did Hillary Clinton ever deliver health-care reform and when did she demonstrate her economic wisdom and foresight while Alan Greenspan was warning of irrational exuberance as the subprime housing loans were created and pandered during her husband's administration and her husband supported China's entry into the World Trade Organization without any conditions such as protecting the environment or labor and property rights to levels that are comparable to western standards?

Today China is not only a leading contributor to environmental pollution and global warming (thank you very much Mr. Nobel Laureate, Al Gore), it's also pushing up oil and other commodity prices, taking our jobs and stealing our intellectual property.

It's refreshingly nice to see the better angels of the American character is prevailing as voters reject the racial, religious and ethnic slurs being spewed by the Clinton, Limbaugh and Hannity supporters against Barack Obama.

As a Republican-leaning independent, I will vote for Barack Obama if he is the Democratic nominee running against John McCain but I will not vote for Hillary Clinton.
OBAMA INFERS THAT HIS JUDGEMENT IS BETTER THAN HILLARY....HOW GOOD WAS HIS JUDGEMENT WHEN HE DECIDED TO DO DRUGS? ..HOW GOOD WAS HIS JUDGEMENT WHEN HE GOT INVOLVED WITH A SLUM LANDLORD IN CHICAGO......DON'T THINK HIS JUDGEMENT HAS ALWAYS BEEN RIGHT EITHER.............
Mr. Obama never actually voted against the war.   He gave a great speech about what he would have done, but NEVER CAST A VOTE.
PLEASE no more JFK comparisons the guy was awful SLEPT with maryln manroe, got us into VIETNAM,lost CUBA,WIRETAPPED MARTIN LUTHER KING,voted against civil rights bill 1957,against the I HAD A DREAM MARCH,nice comparison even I wont do that to BARACK
J. Mile Stanley, I do not remember hearing anything about Hillary being out there near the towers immediately after they were attacked.  The big hero was Rudy, the major of New York.  He was out there helping take care of the crisis.  Where was Hillary??

Sunny, Mr. Obama voted present 4,000 times?  Get your facts straight, it was 130 out 4,000 votes.  Just like Hillary, you lie and distort.  Illinois has it's own voting rules, and who are you to criticize the way Illinois does things?  The "present" vote means that you don't fully agree with the bill and it requires valid changes before it can be passed.  Again, get your facts straight before shooting off at the mouth.  Ever heard of diarrhea of the mouth?  Looks like you suffer from it.
If you listen the media especially MSNBC or  CNN you will see that race between Obamo and Hillary is over and Obamo win. Example Tuesday debate. MSNBC suggested there was no clear winner and Obamo has edge. but, reality Hillary was great winner as i asked 30 people and they all agreed that Hillary was winner.
Chris Mathew and Tim Russet hate hate Hillary and that is not fair
J. Merle Stanley...

How completely predictable you are!

If I may ask, what qualifies YOU to ask anyone in this blog what qualifies THWM to make the assumption that Hillary's 2002 Iraq vote was wrong?

Your consistant references to "Pimp Daddy B" make it sound as if he stereotypically should be seen in a purple Caddy, dressed like Liberace, et al...( you get the picture.)

Unless you can quantify your attacks with standard and substance, and back them up with fact, than from my seat here you're full of nothing but piss and wind.
SOMEBODY PLEASE GIVE ME A BREAK!!!
Why can't people see through this?
Having seen the ad in its entirety it is once again clear to me that she (as a Clinton) will do and say whatever she thinks she needs to, TO GET VOTES, this time targeting women with children on a the deepest ("cheap shot") level of their most internal fears, that being the safety and welfare of their children. ("Vote for me and I will protect your children.") It has always been my opinion and very clear to me, that the Clintons are nothing but social climbers who talk out of both sides of their mouths to whomever they believe will boost their appeal in support of their own personal climb to the top of our political ladder to reap all of the wonderful benefits such a position brings at the expense of we lowly little taxpayers.
When will we finally see the proverbial wolves in sheep's clothing?  Please people, wake up!!!!!
The Iraq war was Clinton's idea. And so was the holocust, NAFTA, and racism. She even likes cats and kills dogs for a living. Did you know she eat an elephant during her visit to Namibia in 1994?

The point is Clinton is not evil. We just don't want her to lead us. AGAIN.
The disturbing thing about Hillary's Iraq vote was not that she got it wrong, it was the fact that her vote was part of her strategic positioning to line up her presidential race.  She has been thwarted and undone by her ambition.
BO does " Present" on his red phone moments. Atleast I prefer a candidate who takes position and has courage to make decisions instead of saying "Present".

What has BO does since he has been in Senate for the War? Has he voted against funding? He talks about Afghanistan all the time and does not hold a meeting to know whats going in there? Oh !! He is busy giving speeches...
Who do you think will be calling Hillary at 3 AM in the morning, every morning ?

Maybe someone who will be telling her that her husband, former Prez BIll Clinton, is sleeping around with any locally available prostitute, stripper, exotic dancer; a different one each night, all in the name of national security !

She may also receive reports about the previous days latest "Monica Lewinsky" covert operation that surprisingly turns overt, for a publicity stunt to cover up the lack of everything that Hillary will do to botch up the USA !

PNS
"One of Clinton's laws of politics is this: If one candidate's trying to scare you, and the other one's trying to get you to think; if one candidate's appealing to your fears, and the other one's appealing to your hopes; you better vote for the person who wants you to think and hope." -- Bill Clinton, 2004
