The Red Phone ad

Posted: Friday, February 29, 2008 10:59 AM by Domenico Montanaro
Filed Under:

From NBC's Domenico Montanaro
Here's that Mondale ad... hat tip to the New York Observer's Politicker blog...

A rotating red phone is shown as a an announcer ominously pronounces, "The most awesome, powerful responsibility in the world lies in the hand that picks up this phone. The idea of an unsure, unsteady, untested hand is something to really think about. This is the issues of our times. On March 20, vote as if the future of the world is at stake. Mondale. This president will know what he's doing, and that's the difference between Gary Hart and Walter Mondale."

*** UPDATE *** NBC's Andrea Mitchell notes that Obama responded on camera to Clinton's ad. "We've seen these ads before, trying to play on people's fears, trying to scare up votes," Obama said. "But I don't think they'll work this time. The question is not about who will be picking up the phone. The question is what kind of judgment will you exercise when you answer the phone.

"We've had a red-phone moment. It was the decision to invade Iraq. Senator Clinton gave the wrong answer. George Bush gave the wrong answer. John McCain gave the wrong answer."

*** UPDATE 2 *** As NBC's Lauren Appelbaum points out, Roy Spence, who has been advising the Clinton campaign, was also the media advisor for the 1984 Mondale campaign, and helped to create the red-phone ad.

If Obama's the nominee, might the GOP go even further? As Politico's Ben Smith writes, "Indeed, a GOP media consultant who's made his share of red phone spots over the years e-mails that he found Clinton's a bit soft -- long on children, short on direct contrast."

*******************************

what answer did you give when you joinde the senate Mr. Obama?

Oh yeah I remember in 2006 you said I don't know how I would have voted.
Clinton reminds me of Nixon. Anything to get elected. I could even put up with that, but she supported the Bush-Cheney war in Iraq until she saw the potential impact on her bid for the Democratic nomination. Think of it. Thousands of people dead, millions displaced as refugees, all of it unnecessary for our national security, none of it related to 9/11, and it doesn't seem to bother her. That's not the hand I want answering any of the phones in the White House while my kids and grandkids sleep, or while anyone's children anyhwere on the planet sleep.
Hillary blamed her reckless comments in the SC primary on her being ‘sleep deprived.’

What answer could we expect her giving 3:00 AM?
Isn't that plaigarism?
We have nothing to fear but those who use fear itself.  There is a bear in the woods but screaming "that there is a bear in the woods" only emboldens the bear.
If you are basing your vote on what polls are saying, you are being mislead!  The "news" media is biased and trying very hard to make up the minds of voters.  Do the research on the candidates!  Think about it.  We already know everything (too much?) about Hillary Clinton's life.  What do you actually know about Barack Obama?  His church affiliation is relevent.  How he raises campaign funds?  Who his supporters really are?  How he voted when in the Illinois senate?  How he voted in the US Senate?  Do the research, you may be surprised.
Thanks Michiel

Lets get real Hill-raisers. This is so disgusting. The Photo and now Fear 101 with the red phone. It doesnt get any worse than this. I am a New Yorker and I hate what Hill is doing. I and many Ny-ers have said we will not support her for Senate next term. She will lose this and lose her Senate seat because she is so desperate.
SHAME ON YOU HILLARY
You should REJECT AND DENNOUNCE this behavior and your racist supporters.

I can just see it now. The phone rings and she is trying to find Bill somewhere in the White house where he is banging and Intern. Good Lord
Hillary's dirty politics are proving to be worthless. The more she tries, the more she fails. Keep it up, Hillary, by March 4th you will be cooked.
Obama's 2002  Iraq speech

http://www.barackobama.com/2002/10/02/remarks_of_illinois_state_sen.php

"I stand before you as someone who is not opposed to war in all circumstances. The Civil War was one of the bloodiest in history, and yet it was only through the crucible of the sword, the sacrifice of multitudes, that we could begin to perfect this union and drive the scourge of slavery from our soil.
I don't oppose all wars. My grandfather signed up for a war the day after Pearl Harbor was bombed, fought in Patton's army. He fought in the name of a larger freedom, part of that arsenal of democracy that triumphed over evil.
I don't oppose all wars. After September 11, after witnessing the carnage and destruction, the dust and the tears, I supported this administration's pledge to hunt down and root out those who would slaughter innocents in the name of intolerance, and I would willingly take up arms myself to prevent such tragedy from happening again.
I don't oppose all wars. What I am opposed to is a dumb war. What I am opposed to is a rash war. What I am opposed to is the cynical attempt by Richard Perle and Paul Wolfowitz and other armchair, weekend warriors in this administration to shove their own ideological agendas down our throats, irrespective of the costs in lives lost and in hardships borne.
What I am opposed to is the attempt by political hacks like Karl Rove to distract us from a rise in the uninsured, a rise in the poverty rate, a drop in the median income, to distract us from corporate scandals and a stock market that has just gone through the worst month since the Great Depression.
That's what I'm opposed to. A dumb war. A rash war. A war based not on reason but on passion, not on principle but on politics.
Now let me be clear: I suffer no illusions about Saddam Hussein. He is a brutal man. A ruthless man. A man who butchers his own people to secure his own power.... The world, and the Iraqi people, would be better off without him.
But I also know that Saddam poses no imminent and direct threat to the United States, or to his neighbors...and that in concert with the international community he can be contained until, in the way of all petty dictators, he falls away into the dustbin of history.

I know that even a successful war against Iraq will require a U.S. occupation of undetermined length, at undetermined cost, with undetermined consequences.
I know that an invasion of Iraq without a clear rationale and without strong international support will only fan the flames of the Middle East, and encourage the worst, rather than best, impulses of the Arab world, and strengthen the recruitment arm of al-Qaeda.
I am not opposed to all wars. I'm opposed to dumb wars. So for those of us who seek a more just and secure world for our children, let us send a clear message to the president.
You want a fight, President Bush? Let's finish the fight with Bin Laden and al-Qaeda, through effective, coordinated intelligence, and a shutting down of the financial networks that support terrorism, and a homeland security program that involves more than color-coded warnings.
You want a fight, President Bush? Let's fight to make sure that...we vigorously enforce a nonproliferation treaty, and that former enemies and current allies like Russia safeguard and ultimately eliminate their stores of nuclear material, and that nations like Pakistan and India never use the terrible weapons already in their possession, and that the arms merchants in our own country stop feeding the countless wars that rage across the globe.
You want a fight, President Bush? Let's fight to make sure our so-called allies in the Middle East, the Saudis and the Egyptians, stop oppressing their own people, and suppressing dissent, and tolerating corruption and inequality, and mismanaging their economies so that their youth grow up without education, without prospects, without hope, the ready recruits of terrorist cells.
You want a fight, President Bush? Let's fight to wean ourselves off Middle East oil through an energy policy that doesn't simply serve the interests of Exxon and Mobil.
Those are the battles that we need to fight. Those are the battles that we willingly join. The battles against ignorance and intolerance. Corruption and greed. Poverty and despair."
ITS time for the democrats to be as PROUD as republicans BUYING elections OHHH so proud,PRO WAR ANTI WAR NON VIOLENCE PRO VIOLENCE you decide, hatemongers
I wouldn't feel secure with "Pimp Daddy B" in control of our military.
Sunny, Obama’s voting presence is taking advantage of a technical procedure designed to force changes in details of a law. This option is not available in Congress, but in the IL, senate.

Now, that WAY A BETTER option than Clinton’s voting YES on a law she said she DID NOT want to pass!!!! And better than voting for war based on trusting Cheney instead of doing your homework and reading the NIA made available to you. It seems she knows more about polling date than she knows about the National Intelligence Estimate.

I trust her to pick up all POLITICAL calls. But national security calles? HELL NO!
MSNBC, Hillary's New Strategists?

The other morning on the Morning Joe Show, Joe had a red phone on the desk and said that Hillary Clinton should run an ad hitting home the message asking Americans who they want to answer the phone. I woke up this morning only to learn that Clinton is running a new ad where she is now asking Americans who do they want to answer the phone. For a candidate who claims she is the candidate of solutions, her pail of solutions on how to overcome Obama sure looks empty from where I stand, as she now has to rely on the media to provide her with solutions to save her dwindling campaign.

Since Hillary's other strategies have failed, it appears MSNBC has stepped in to replace Mark Penn as Hillary Clinton's chief strategist. Not only have they helped her with this ad, but in the last two weeks I have heard various pundits on MSNBC make suggestions on how Hillary can improve her strategy and low and behold Hillary has implemented every suggestion including Pat Buchanan telling Hillary to "Go Negative or Go Home." Shortly thereafter the negative "Change for Xerox", "Shame on you Obama,", Somlai Garb Photo and negative connotations of Barack 'Hussein' Obama surfaced
Why is it the lemmings believe Hillary is the smartest person on Earth. I have heard Bill say it and others but really, If she were that smart she would have cornered the cattle futures market by now and made millions in Real Estate. She would not need to get 5 Mill. from Dubai via Bill's severance package to fund her own election run. She gets more money from health insurance & other business that MCain, is she really for the working man?
He may be too busy SMOKING to answer the phone. I will NOT vote for a president who smokes. I will NOT have to explain to my 13 year old son why he shouldn't smoke but it's okay for the President of the United States to smoke. This may not be a big deal to the rest of you, but it is to me.
There seems to be NOTHING that the Clintons won't do to get elected.  They are just so used to winning, they can't stand it and their denial is hurting the country and the Democratic party.  IF the red phone goes off...Hillary would go off....or cry...or scream, "Why is this happening to ME?!!!  We need integrity and calm and good sound judgment.
chicken little has enter the room. I can not remember any president who did not get himself before the american people in a hurry at a time of crisis. they have all assured us that they will do all they can and we as americans felt that they would BUT over the days and months that follow such crisis we find that our gov. has failed us. WHY, is anyones guess but the true sign of failure is fear mongering. It works every time because if you think your message is not getting through then chicken little the sky will fall always works. Listen to everyone campaign, and then look for the ones with the chicken little message. I don't think you will find obama saying vote for me because if you don't something terrible will happen to our country and your sleeping children.

Here's you a quote right from the MSNBC home page:
But a significant proportion (of Republicans) say they are temporarily backing Obama for strategic reasons. They plan to vote Republican in November, but for now, their goal is to try to make sure Clinton cannot win.
Because they think it will be easier to defeat Obama in November.
So much for a representative DEMOCRATIC nomination. Republicans and Independents can come into our Democratic primaries and steal our Democratic vote for OUR candidate. What a rip off. Obama would be trailing HRC pathetically if this nomination were restricted to REAL DEMOCRATS. If Independents love BO so much, why don't they run their own D__N candidate and get out of our party. This really ticks me off.
Oh Please----quit your whining about this ad.  OBAMA USES THE SAME TACTICS. I received two mailers from Obama before our primary--one scared people into thinking Hillary's health care was going to make them go broke and be fined, and the other (with dark and ominous background) scared people into thinking she was responsible for loss of jobs and that their jobs would be her next target.

I see the ad's purpose to draw a contrast between the candidates' experience and to get voters to think about the future--who do they want at the switch during a crisis?  I would rather it be Hillary Clinton, who has far more worldly experience and has more factual knowledge which means she will be able to see and analyze events in an historical context.  I agree that this election is about the future, but only a fool would say we should ignore the past.  I believe that Hillary has spent her entire adult lifetime thinking about and learning about all of the important events and issues of the past 40 years.  I trust her to make the right decisions and she will lead this country forward to better times.
Kym [[Obama rocks!! His responses are soooooooooo quick!!!]]

That's because he doesn't respond after getting the advice of  a platoon of campaign advisers based on what plays well with a focus group; he says what HE thinks he should. That's quicker, and better.

Clinton depends on advisers who've steered her wrong most of the time. As for McCain, he just sounds like a trained parakeet, robotically repeating Bush/Rove talking points about "waving white flag of surrender" and other such garbage.

Clinton Smears Obama on Iraq — Again

Bill Clinton 2003 (in 2007 He says something different)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dWm8riukyeM

Barack Obama:  The quote he(B Clinton)  keeps on feeding back was an interview on 'Meet the Press' at the National Convention when Tim was asking, 'Given your firm opposition to the war, what do you make of the fact that your nominee for president and vice president didn't have that same foresight.' And obviously I didn't want to criticize them on the eve of their nomination.
''But, I'm not privy to Senate intelligence reports,'' Mr. Obama said. ''What would I have done? I don't know. What I know is that from my vantage point the case was not made.''  And: "What I don't think was appropriate was the degree to which Congress gave the president a pass on this."

A "Daisy" ad? Seriously? Is Clinton trying to counter Obama's hope message with fear? Cold War politics rear their ugly head.
“I will NOT have to explain to my 13 year old son why he shouldn't smoke but it's okay for the President of the United States to smoke.”

Notwithstanding that he had quit smoking, are you looking forward again to explain your son why people think of a cigar they think of a Clinton?
ONE THING IS FOR SURE - OBAMA IS QUICK TO REACT !

NOBODY CAN THROW SLIME AND DIRT AT HIM AN D HOPE THAT HE WILL NOT NOTICE. CLINTON'S REPUBLICAN AD IS PATHETIC. ACTUALLY I THINK THIS WILL HARM HER BECAUSE DEMOCRATS DID NOT LIKE THAT CRAP IN 2004 AND SINCE 2007/2008 SO MANY VOTERS ACTUALLY PAY ATTENTION AND THINK ABOUT WHAT THEY SEE AND HEAR.

YOU SEE, THAT SMEAR AND FEAR PROGRAM WILL ONLY RESULT IN A GOOD HALF OF THE DEMOCRATIC AND INDEPENDENT BASE TO REJECT BILLARY FOR GOOD.

I HAVE NO IDEA WHY SHE IS NOT PUTTING HER STRATEGY IN CONTEXT OF THE NOVEMBER ELECTION ... SHE IS BURNING ALL THE BRIDGES *AHEAD* !!
Sunny posted the following: "While in the state senate, in more than 4,000 votes, Obama voted "present". That's not 'yes,' that's not 'no' ,That's 'maybe'."

Also, the pathetic 'John Doe' stated, "OBama needs to answer why he belongs to a racist church who supports and praises Farrakhan, leader of Nation Islam; who hates Jews and white people."

Sunny, you really need to do your homework before you post such an inaccurate statement. Out of over 4,000 votes in the Illinois State Senate, Obama voted 'present' only 130 times, often for strategic reasons way above your head. By contrast, just a few days ago, when the all important Telecom bill came up for a vote in the U.S. Senate, Obama stood up and voted against the Telecom companies, McCain voted for the Telecom companies and Hillary (who was in the area at the time) simply chose not to show up and vote at all...she didn't even bother to be present!

John Doe (and every other person trying to state that Obama hates white people): What a sorry, sad attempt at creating racial divisions. However, you're forgetting one glaring obvious fact: Obama's mother (who he undisputedly loved dearly) was caucasian, as were his maternal grandparents. Those are the three people who raised him, so to state that he hates white people is ludicrous, and just shows how baseless and pathetic your accusations are.

Also, regarding one of the pastors of his church: To state that Obama believes in and follows every statement and action demonstrated by any church official is to make the equally absurd statement that every Catholic who had a priest found guilty of child molesting is a child molester by association as well and worthy of scrutiny by Chris Hansen and Dateline's 'To Catch A Predator'.

Regarding Farrakhan - No one asked for (or has accepted) his support, and, last time that I checked, Obama both repudiated his vile antisemitic statements and rejected and denounced him.

Get a life and a clue...

OBAMA '08
I love Hillary but if she is not the nominee I would vote for McCain, at least he's qualified, Obama is not.

GO HILLARY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
John (Sent Friday, February 29, 2008 11:17 AM)

NO, NO John..NO MCWAR...vote Hillary  in the November election.  WRITE IN her name.

WRITE Hillary on the ballot.
Vote for not one other person! Just use the write in space and VOTE FOR HILLARY!
John Doe have you lost your way?  it is called hillaryclinton.com
I wouldn't feel secure with "Pimp Daddy B" in control of our military.

I wouldn't feel secure with "Pimp Daddy B" in control of our military.
J. Merle Stanley, Westchester, NY (Sent Friday, February 29, 2008 12:21 PM)

J Merle, now here i go thinking you were a Hillary supporter, how dare you call refer to Bill Clinton as a pimp..."Pimp Daddy Bill"..I am shocked...shocked!!
hey disgusting habit...

I hear Hillary Clinton drinks! Wow what a disgusting habit, I do not want my 3 year old to see a president who drinks, that is really important to me..

Or one better:

HRC answer that phone? I just hope it is not Dimitri Medvedev calling, she may think she is talking to the owner of Stolichnya Vodka on that phone. (I hear she is a big drinker!), not the new President of Russia...

This is what we have come to, cannot find a reason, invent one!
Thinking about this with my gut, I would rather have Obama's hand on the phone than Clinton's or McCain's.
I am trying to think of a nasty ugly word to describe someone who will vote for McCain if Hill is not the nominee. I got it, the word is "REPUBLICAN"
Hilliary is correct. How can we the people trust such an untested, untried, and yes unproven leader in Obama. We most likely will be getting another Bush:(

Our economey, climate and perhaps even our LIVES should be trusted to slick campaign sloagans such as "We Want Change"

Obama is nothing more than an imposter and junior want to be.

Vote Hilliary as your life may depend upon it.
Please tell me how there is even a choice here? Hillary is the only one that can lead us out of the mess we are in. The thought of O-bam-boose-al in the Oval Office makes me sick to my stomack.
You'd think Hilary would be aware of backlash!  This is very unwise and indicative of lack of character.  Bushites resort to  f e a r  tactics.  Clinton has hit a new low.  I disliked her prior to this.  My opinion of her has dropped a rung or three.  I've a mind to produce a piece to illustrate what I think of her.
Fear mongoring is next to warmongoring.  It is what Bush counted on to keep the White House after it's theft.  He subjected this country to a decade of the worse manipulations to steal our Constitution.  She has now illustrated beyond a shadow of doubt that if she is elected and instilled in the White House, it will be perpetually MORE OF THE SAME.
OH MY GOODNESS . . . it's PLAGIARISM!

Priceless!!!!!
Check out this quote from Bill Clinton in 2004:

"Now, one of Clinton's laws of politics is this. If one candidate is trying to scare you and the other one is try get you to think, if one candidate is appealing to your fears and the other one is appealing to your hopes, you better vote for the person who wants you to think and hope."

http://transcripts.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/0410/25/pzn.01.html

If this isn't irony, I don't know what is.
I find it amazing that Obama is criticized for voting for continued funding of the war, even though he was always against this war in the first place.  His vote reflects his support of our troops...of course Conservatives like to paint all anti-war proponents as unpatriotic and callous towards our brave troops.  Not so!

I think I would like Monica answering the phone.  The only problem is that her mouth would be full and all she could do is mumble.
If Obama answered that phone..

-Lives would be lost while he stutters on his own words.
-He would incorrectly state that Al-Qaeda was not in Iraq before the war.
-He would vote "Present"
-He would mislead America into thinking that did vote against the war, when in-fact he could not vote since he was not in the Senate at the time.
-The media would fall over themselves with tingles going up their legs... while America is put in danger by a media rigged election.
-He would hide his middle name and call anyone and everyone that used it the "Fear Bomb". While the only one showing fear here is himself.
Oh I love this - Clinton campaign trys yet another strategy - fear.  The question about who is going to pick up the red phone should be which version of Hillary would pick up the red phone.  Would it be the shrill, nagging Hillary that points her finger, waves her arms and wants to talk about your behavior young man, or the teary eyed Hillary who is afraid it is all slipping away, or the sarcastic Hillary who tries to belittle her opponant, or maybe the bitter, poor me, Hillary claiming that there is some kind of right wing or media conspiracy against her?  If she would decide who she is maybe we could decide if she is fit to be president.  As it is, we have to look at her past behavior when she attempted to pass a health care bill that was a mess and threatened to crush anyone who opposed her ideas - Is this who should be answering the red phone?

The Negative Campainging by Clintons will fail

Body:
HRC needs to come off the double talk she spews. She was in trouble in 2000 for her kiss of respect for Arafat's wife, and there are pix of her in full arabian dress.

People should really need to examine why Hillary is blaming EVERYONE except herself for her "experience of mistakes" in judgment and resulting rapid decline in the polls over 11 straight losses in a row. Her "3am Ad" and Texas lawsuit threats only says if she is President and running the country into the ground like Bush has that she can take early morning calls from innocent people who don't know anything we didn't already know! Her past shows she's going to try and lay the blame at everyone else's doorstep while also denying any personal responsibility for it.
Example?
In the debate the other night on MSNBC, she was asked why she was unable to produce the 500,000 jobs she promised she would create for the state of NY when running for the Senate in 2000. There was a net 35,000 LOSS in jobs and she immediately blamed Al Gore for NOT getting elected. How sad is that?!?!?
Would someone wake Hillary up and tell her the telephone is ringing.
http://www.cnn.com/2004/ALLPOLITICS/10/25/clinton.monday/

Check out bill clinton's comments a bottom of article regarding fear and hope.
Sen. Clinton is right. Sen. Obama is not ready to lead this country - inspite of what white liberals and the AA  population thinks.

1. Clinton, 2. Mc Cain, 3. Stay at home
"I wouldn't feel secure with "Pimp Daddy B" in control of our military."
--------------------------------------------------

Ummm, Bill Clinton's not running.
Wow, lets scare people to death!  This is even low for the Clintons!  The lady who voted for the war, admitted not reading the intelligence reports, now wants to scare people to vote for her.  Terrible, and SHAME ON YOU HILLARY CLINTON
"I shiver at the thought of Obama faced with a terror crisis."
----

Amen, I shiver at the thought of someone who has shown themselves to remain calm and, oh, shall we say, presidential, throughout this campaign answering the phone.  My kids will be so much safer if someone who resorts to whining and ridicule when the going gets tough answers that scary phone call.

Puh-leaze.

This is what the ad should have shown:

Phone rings.  Bill answers - "Hello?"

Voice on phone: "yes, President Clinton?"

Bill responds - "Yes."

Voice on phone: "No ummmm... uhhhh...the other president."

Bill:  "Listen, your pay grade is far to low to talk to me like that.  When I was president I answered the phone hundreds of times late at night and....."

Hillary:  "Bill!!  give me the phone.  You're dreaming again"
