Must-win spin

Posted: Friday, February 29, 2008 12:57 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC’s Domenico Montanaro
Who is Texas and Ohio “must win” for again? Hillary Clinton’s chief surrogate, former President Bill Clinton, has said she has to win both Texas and Ohio. Harold Ickes, a top aide, said, "If we lose in Texas and Ohio, Mrs. Clinton will have to make her decision as to whether she goes forward or not.” Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell, a Clinton supporter, said in order to win Pennsylvania, she’s got to win Tuesday.

So Clinton must win, right? Clinton Campaign Chief Strategist Mark Penn today released a memo to the media, though, with the subject, “Obama Must-Wins.”

“If he cannot win all of these states with all this effort, there's a problem,” Penn writes. And not only does he have to win, they have to be “decisive,” according to the memo.

“Should Senator Obama fail to score decisive victories with all of the resources and effort he is bringing to bear, the message will be clear,” Penn continues, “Democrats, the majority of whom have favored Hillary in the primary contests held to date, have their doubts about Senator Obama and are having second thoughts about him as a prospective standard-bearer.”

Obama has won a majority of nominating contests, including caucuses, but note Penn’s use of “primary.”

Obama campaign manager David Plouffe says, by their estimate, his candidate is ahead by 162 pledged delegates. (NBC News’ hard count shows Obama ahead 157 pledged delegates, but there are 13 delegates still unallocated, including nine in Colorado, two in Maryland and one each in Hawaii, Democrats Abroad, New York and Tennessee. Of those states, Obama won Colorado, Maryland, Hawaii and Abroad.)

“We’re heading to a series of close contests” on March 4th, Plouffe said on a conference call with reporters earlier today. “There will not be a huge delegate swing.” Plouffe also pointed out that they could rack up more delegates in a decisive victory in Vermont than Clinton could with slight wins in either or both Ohio and Texas.

“They have said themselves they need to win both Texas and Ohio by over 10 pts,” Plouffe said of the Clinton campaign. “There’s a long way to go, so maybe they can do that. Their goal was to dig into our pledged delegate lead on March 4. They thought they could make huge delegate strides.

“They’re going to fail on that and fail miserably.”

Below is the full Penn memo:

RE: Obama Must-Wins

The media has anointed Barack Obama the presumptive nominee and he's playing the part.

With an eleven state winning streak coming out of February, Senator Obama is riding a surge of momentum that has enabled him to pour unprecedented resources into Texas, Ohio, Rhode Island and Vermont.

The Obama campaign and its allies are outspending us two to one in paid media and have sent more staff into the March 4 states. In fact, when all is totaled, Senator Obama and his allies have outspent Senator Clinton by a margin of $18.4 million to $9.2 million on advertising in the four states that are voting next Tuesday.

Senator Obama has campaigned hard in these states. He has spent time meeting editorial boards, courting endorsers, holding rallies, and - of course - making speeches.

If he cannot win all of these states with all this effort, there's a problem.

Should Senator Obama fail to score decisive victories with all of the resources and effort he is bringing to bear, the message will be clear:

Democrats, the majority of whom have favored Hillary in the primary contests held to date, have their doubts about Senator Obama and are having second thoughts about him as a prospective standard-bearer.

One can only wonder when the Clinton Campaign will begin jumping up and down yelling  "Do Over! Do Over!"
Oh..dang..they already are on Michigan and Florida.
Does not play well with others.
Wats the fuss about: have you not heard of the clitonian doctrine and machine? What's more: if Obama was in Clinton's shoes... this game called primary would have been sooooo over! However, its Obama the next best Democratic Politicain in the horizon. PS I love First Read....
Sounds like a press release written by Carl Rove - Maybe if Clinton says this enough, people will actually believe it is true..."Catipult the Propiganda!" Scary.
The Super delegates will decide after the Primary

They will move to Obama and end the process
The Super Delegates will support Barack Obama
Al Gore, Jimmy Carter, John Edwards, Joe Biden, Bill richardson.....
They'll ALL support Barack Obama

Barack Obama is 'INEVITABLE'

Barack Obama will be your next President
To Frank: "How stupid does the Clinton campaign think the American Public is???"
Considering The American People voted in Bush the SECOND time...that should answer your question.
The campaign goal for Clinton is to keep Obama from the 2,025 and use their dirty tricks at the convention which is plausible since Florida and Michigan "will not be seated."

The spin today is to keep Hillary in the race under the worst possible conditions from March 4.

They are interested in the Clinton "legacy" and NOTHING else
So who is this Mark Penn guy?  Hillary's Dick Cheney?!  "Don't worry with the right spin, repeated over and over, we CAN alter reality?"

I'm starting to feel a bit sorry for all of Hillary's supporters who must be starting to wonder about her choices for management of her campaign.  I mean they had every legitimate reason to support her, but this has got to be an embarrassment even to many of them.

I think even Bill must be cringing.  Even though I'm an Obama supporter, I can hardly stand it because I really believed in so much of what the Clintons had accomplished and the future they still might have had, but I'm starting to wonder if this is beginning of the end of all of it.
Ah the world of spin. Penn is just trying to keep pressure away from the campaign that is floundering. Yeah Obama has to win all 4 or he's done. If someone buys that they are stupid. Obama has one 11 in a row so sorry I think it's the other way around. Obama probably win Vermont, Clinton will probably get RI and the two biggies they are too close to call. With all this talk about a lawsuit I will laugh if he wins both Ohio and Texas. I've been saying it all day. If she does that she will kill the party.
We should make sure the rest of the voters are well informed as to the positions, among other things, that each candidate has.  There are some questions that people should look at: Are the documents that Clinton hasn't release (including tax returns) really that important?  Are the connections that Obama has to the minister of his church and to Farrakan really strong?  These are just some of the ideas that people might consider.
I'd say the 2.3 million mark penn is getting each month is buying him some really good drugs...its all over but the concession speech for clinton
Do Obama supporters work or do they just sit at their
computers all day posting to every news site there is? Or do they do all their emailing when they're supposed to be working? (I'm home with the flu, so don't even start with me!)
So if, as the would be "first Laddie" states, she must win Texas and Ohio, then why is she not out spending, out campagining Obama in these states..?  Just a couple 2 or 3 weeks ago she had double digit leads and was already putting all of her eggs in these baskets... knowing the do or die nature of these contest it is inconceivable that she or her handlers would allow themselves to be outspent or have less staff working these states...just like Penn,it makes no sense.
Penn basically says Obama is winning because he worked harder. Since when is not working as hard an acceptable or good excuse for losing.  How stupid.
Mark Penn kind of sounds like the Ministry of Defense in Baghdad when the US was bombing Saddam Hussein, and yet he was telling the people of his country Iraq qas winning the war.
Obama is a con and will say and do anything to win!

Nothing on MSNBC about Obama advisor calling the Canadian government!

http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalpunch/2008/02/more-on-that-ca.html?cid=105238322
That sounds just like Mark Penn, (or Bill Clinton,) talking...  Grasping for any possible positive spin on this Tuesday's inevitable defeat for his candidacy, he is left grasping for straws...  Oh, how the mighty have fallen & continue to fall...  Thank G-d this contest will be over before it gets here to PA where, although I don't believe Hillary will win, Ed Rendell will fix it so she does!
Ever notice how Senator Clinton always looks bug-eyed when she is trying to make her point with those in attendance?

Is that what we want a leader to look like?
so what  you are saying:

'Eliot, Los Angeles,CA (Sent Friday, February 29, 2008 1:27 PM)'

Is that it's okay to be exactly like the Bush Administration as long as it's a Democrat in the White House?  Almost all of us are tired of those tactics - so tired in fact, that it is NOT okay for ''one of ours' to engage in them on their way to the Presidency.  If these are Hillary's tactics, she would definitely not be much of an improvement on George W. Bush, et al.  I'll take my chances with Obama, thank you.
I simply must add a quote from Peyman on this. Its to witty not to share:

Isn't she and her campaign staff starting to sound like the honorable Muhammed Saeed al-Sahaf, Saddam Hussein's Information minister during the ill-fated invasion in March 2003 where he would stand alone in front of a camera and declare that the Iraqi troops are defeating the American army while there were literally bullets flying around behind him in the background? I think the parallels are astounding.
John Doe: poster boy for bigotry and ignorance. Oh, and I forgot--LIAR.
Whatever the cocky Penn thinks, only a smart and sensible person will recognize his real intent. The Clinton campaign will say and deploy any tactics to win, whether litigation or all-out ad attacks enitrely loaded with lies because there is little other negatives they can think that have truth to them. They also utilize fear monging as if America is a gullible and overly fearful nation despite its superpower status.
I think that the primary reason why Hillary won the primmaries but hardly the cacuses is because of ehr name -- name recognition on the ballot serves as a turn on. But when a group of individuals compete for their candidate and truthfully  exchange facts about each candidate, people overcome their prejudice over Obama's name and go over the facts. When voting to choose between Hillary and Obama, Democrats are much more familiar with Hillary, but they don't have anyone to give them their take on the respective candidates since what they get is TV/radio ads and mailers that are misleading or outright false for average voters to make a meaningful decision.
I want to comment more often, but find "Ron in TX" voices my opinions almost verbatim.  Nice to here my echo coming from my voice here in the bay area Ron !
I am sick and tired of Penn, Billary, Wild Bill and the rest complaining about this and that. They have simply failed to make an effective case for Billary's election. This talk of litigation makes them look small, very small. I suspect if the vote was going the other way, they would singing high praise for the process.

This isn't the old days, when the Party Bosses met behind closed doors. The nomination process in each state has been in place and there was amply time for the leaders to deal with any concerns. If the Billary's knew there problems in some states, months ago, and didn't call for them to be fixed - SHAME ON THEM!

If they didn't know months ago - SHAME ON THEM!

They just need to campaign and shut up about anything else.

OBAMA IS THE BIGGEST JOKE......
HE HAS NO EXPERIENCE TO LEAD A SUPERPOWER....
GEORGE BUSH IS RIGHT:YOU DON'T TALK TO THE ENEMIES WITHOUT PRECONDITIONS.....
I'M AN INDEPENDENT VOTER,AND I WILL NOT VOTE FOR OBAMA.
MSNBC, quit jus quoting the foolish Zogby post that got it so wrong in California.  Your bias is showing again.  MSNBC, quit drinking the kool-aid.  It's pretty sad that both CNN and Fox are laughing at how biased you are.  Your credibility is going down the drain.
I wonder how many in the Clinton camp are spending time with CareerBuilder and Monster minimized on their computer screens these days...better get those resumes tuned up, Clintonites. The bell tolls for thee come next Wednesday morning.
Fear mongering tactics from Goldwater girl. Here you go folks. I'll take Bill Clinton's word at a phase value.

Let the good folks in Texas, Ohio, Rhode Island & Vermont have their say on Tuesday.  Doesn't matter who you vote for, matters that you vote!!
Mark Penn. What a class act. You know he is doing a horrible job when bigtime Hillary aid, Harold Ickes (he said he'd be backing Obama if she wasn't running), has openly critisized Mark Penn's strategies. At least some people in Hillary's camp have class.
What you guys don't understand is that if Obama can't win these states with all the money he's putting into it, how do you think he'll do in the general election against McCain when he has little foreign policy experience, little national security experience, and the only thing he keeps saying was that he voted against the war. That line is going to run dry soon, especially after all the excitement of him and the democratic primary. And don't forget. Although he has won a lot of votes, the majority of th DEMOCRATIC votes is won by Hillary. Republicans are voting for Obama in the primaries because they know he'll be an easier opponent against McCain. Sort of like a last round of CBS Survivor. Vote off your biggest opponent so you have an easier time with the weaker one. The GOP is gaming the system, and everyone is falling for it.
You can spin this any way you want but Bill Clinton is right. Hillary will need to win the next two "biggies" Texas and Ohio. If she can not do so she is finished. She is being outspent three to one in both states but that does not mean anything. The public will not remember how much money was spent to beat her, only that she got beat. If she can pull it off, she remains firmly in contention and puts a stop to Obama's run. If she can not, it's time for a graceful exit.
You can check the Washington Post for a list of superdelegate names in your state and others.  Contact them and express your opinions.  Lets end this thing!
Who is Patty, Sad, Caca?  She is SOOOOOOOO busted.

Dredbear in Texas
If she does that she will kill the party.
Tim, MI (Sent Friday, February 29, 2008 1:54 PM)

-------------------Oh Tim the party is over, way over.  Are you deaf, dumb and blind?  We are now totally fractured , split, broken.  Barry has appeared OT of nowhere, the repukes have been demonizing not just Hilary but Bill as well as if He were running it has been at min a year of this.  We are now going to give it to the repukes.  But I will vote for Hillary on my November ballot if she is not the Nominee B/C I Can. I can write her name on my ballot and negate all other candidates. I will rebel on party and media and not be robbed of my vote! My vote for my choice not the Media's choice. OR any Kennedy's choice!  NO OMAMA! NO MCWAR!
Shannon S:
By voting for Obama you are indeed taking a chance. You are taking a chance the Republican politician will "go along to get along". You are taking a chance that these people are suddenly going to start playing fair and realize that everyone is tired of these tactics so they are going to turn over a new leaf. You are taking a chance that Obama can be a "uniter and not a divider". You are taking a chance....without question.
When did the mental institution in San Diego that patty is in get computers, yesterday?

On March 5, at 3 am wherever you are, Hillary Rodham Clinton will be nowhere near a phone.  Just try and call her.

She will be so xanaxed, they'll have to wake her with electroshock for breakfast.
Funny, I don't remember Obama making OH and TX his firewall. I do seem to remember Hillary saying wait for TX and OH. Maybe now it's wait for PA, or don't forget FL and MI, or wait for Puerto Rico...whatever. I wonder if PR is the final Clinton firewall? If she does indeed lose in OH or TX or both, she must drop out. Hillary and Bill and Wolfson and Penn set the bar. They are the ones that have to live up to expectations.
To Patty, sd, ca

You obviously have a case of Bush-itis.  Ignoring the facts and the truth of a situation to espouse (I'm sure you don't know what that word means so here is a primer: support, promote, advocate) imaginary tales.  Get your facts right before you post an attack.  Obama's campaign AND the Canadian government denied the NAFTA story as being untrue.  You would think you would have had your fill of 7 years unsophisticated and unintelligent presidential leadership. Your arrogance exposes your ignorance.
Patty, are you too dumb to type out original posts on each thread?
A few thoughts:

1st - if Canada is mad at Obama over NAFTA, that is good for the US.  Canada knows that Clinton loves Canada and will never push hard for  new deal.

2nd - Every day that goes by McCain is raising money for the general while the dems continue to fight each other.  The sooner this campaign ends the better.  Start figting the republicans and stop fighting each other.  It is time to rally behind one candidate.
Clinton and Obama have no real views.  They just pander to the polls.  Vote "no" to politics as usual.

Vote for real change in '08

Nader/Gonzalez
When you elect a Presidential candidate, you also elect his or her team to work in the West Wing and run the country.  Anyone out there really want Mark Penn sitting near a White House phone, flashing or not?
WOW!!!!!  As a woman with children,i found it deplorable that Hillary would  play the Bush/Cheney fear card. Enough, i denounce and reject this type  of campaigning!!!!! I was undecided, but that commercial really made up my mind. Change we can believe in.
The last thing we need in this nation is another President in denial, who tells us black is white and down is up.  We've had 7 years of that and the results have been bitter.  Hillary cannot manage her campaign financially, she's gone Rovian in her tactics, calls us insignificant if we don't agree with her, and now thinks we're stupid enough to believe that her 11 straight losses and being down in the polls are not a negative.  More Clintonian insults directed at the American public.  I would have supported her nomination had she beat Obama in the popular vote.  Not after all this.
Hey guys thank you for all the love.

Obama will not win a General Election even if he spent a trillion dollars.

isn't this fun.
For a statistician, Penn doesn't seem to have a good grasp on numbers.
Hey guys thank you for all the love.

Obama will not win a General Election even if he spent a trillion dollars.
