Huckabee tours border

Posted: Saturday, March 01, 2008 3:28 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ's Matthew Berger
LAREDO, Texas -- Huckabee toured the Mexican border Saturday and stressed his commitment to preventing illegal immigration, while choosing against criticizing McCain.

Huckabee -- joined by Rep. Duncan Hunter, Jim Gilchrist, founder and president of the Minutemen Project and Chuck Norris – first was briefed at the Laredo office of Customs and Border Protection. He viewed the command center, where operators scan mounted video cameras, looking for Mexicans seeking to cross the border. He also saw a wide array of weapons and equipment the patrolmen use, including hovercraft.

He then toured a potential border crossing, walking through the woods to the edge of the Rio Grande. Speaking after the tour, Huckabee demurred when asked if McCain was soft on immigration.

“I’m not going to characterize his position because I think that’s not really a healthy thing for me to get into,” he said. “I still had rather have Sen. McCain than I had Sen. Obama or Sen. Clinton as president.”

Huckabee continued to stress the need for increased border protection and expressed support for current plans to prosecute all illegal border crossers. He also backed civilian border-protection groups, saying they were necessary because of deficient federal resources for protecting the border.

Huckabee was also asked about some who misconstrued his comments Friday about McCain roping cattle. After trying to lasso a bale of hay in Fort Worth, Huckabee suggested McCain couldn’t do better. Some believed his comments were a jab at McCain’s Vietnam War injuries, but Huckabee said that wasn’t the case.

“Oh nonsense,” he said, chuckling. “Good chance after my performance yesterday he could do it better. He couldn't do it any worse, that's for sure.”

Glad to see we have a good number of sensible conservatives in the Republican Party.

Go Mike Huckabee!  http://www.mikehuckabee.com
Hang in the Huck.......You may just beat the Mac.

At least you don't have to worry about the few racist black super delegates who have lost their honor by going back on their word to Sen. Clinton
Perhaps I've missed it, but I'm surprised you haven't covered the reactions by Bill Donohoe of the Catholic League and other Catholics to John Hagee's endorsement of McCain, especially since there's an indirect MSNBC connection, with Tim Russert's grilling of Obama over Louis Farrakhan being mentioned quite a bit in relation to the story.

For example, here's Matthew Yglesias, at Atlantic Monthly, on the story:
http://matthewyglesias.theatlantic.com/archives/2008/03/mccain_on_hagee.php

The issue here has to do with the role of extremists in public life. Barack Obama never sought support from Louis Farrakhan, never appeared on stage with Farrakhan, never pronounced himself proud to be backed by Farrakhan, but was nonetheless asked on national television to specifically disavow the man. People don't want to put a political coalition that includes Farrakhan in office.

McCain and his staff actively sought out Hagee's endorsement, he appeared and campaigned with Hagee, he said he was proud to be backed by Hagee. Hagee is, in short, part of McCain's political strategy. Now he tells us he doesn't agree with Hagee about everything. Well, which things? Are we supposed to believe that McCain's not into the bigotry, or the foreign policy aimed at apocalypse, but just likes Hagee because of their shared opposition to gay marriage? Is McCain going to be courting Osama bin Laden's endorsement? It's reminiscent of McCain's on-again, off-again quest for the support of "agents of intolerance" like Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson. McCain's trying to wink with one eye to a segment of the electorate, wink with his other eye at his fans in the media, and somehow maintain a reputation for straight talk throughout all this.

I'm curious to hear your takes on this.  It's an interesting political story, with McCain trying to balance different conservative religious groups (and not very successfully, it seems.)
What idiot thought Huckabee would actually "take a jab" at McCain's Vietnam injuries?  Are there really journalists out there that are that determined to think the worst?
Mike Huckabee is the last best hope for this country. Any of the other candidates will open our nation to a tidal wave of illegal immigrants. Mike is to kind to say it but the fact is Juan McCain is no better then Obama or Clinton. In fact Juan McCain has made it clear he will do nothing to stop the illegal’s or keep our jobs in this country. Things are so bad now that we actually are outsourcing our military equipment to the French. Yes, the war-like French who were so supportive of our ‘war on terror’ just received a 40 to 100 billion-dollar contract over Boeing.
To all my fellow democrats out there....you need to check this Huck guy out... common sense, solutions and has the gift of communication fer sure!
In 1999 I bought a home in AZ and paid cash...no mortgage. 2 years later an illegal immigrant came to my home and commited a crime while I slept. The financial damage was so great that in 06 I had to mortgage my paid off home.

Santana Batiz-Aceves  came to the US in 1999 but he was deported for commiting a crime. 4 years later he came back to the US but he was deported again for commiting another crime. About a month ago he was arrested about a mile from my home on 47 counts of raping young girls....dubbed the Chandler (AZ) rapist.

Everything stated above is a matter of public record.
Mike Huckabee is the best man to seal our border. He has a reasonable, compassionate immigration policy and the support of the toughest border security folks, including Duncan Hunter. In addition, his Fair Tax plan will stimulate our economy. My vote is for Mike Huckabee here in TX!
For sure only the “Good-O-Boy” Republicans are asking Huckabee to quit, so the GOP can move the party to the center away from the real conservatives. 10 % of conservatives will not be motivated to vote anyway, 20 % of conservatives will not vote for John McCain, and most of Huckabee ’s and Paul’s voters will not vote for McCain, so who is the GOP going after? Liberals and moderates! Good luck with your support of McCain without the support of the conservative base.
While strict and unflinching, Huckabee's immigration policy is very fair and actually welcoming.  He cares enough about all of us "immigrants" who are already here legally, to expect that anyone else wanting to come should do so through proper avenues.  This is just one of Huckabee's NUMEROUS commonsense, effective policies.  Go Huckabee, we can't wait for the miracle on Tuesday!  J and S LOPEZ
Don't hold your nose...Vote for Huckabee!
Can one of you reporters look at the text of Obama's and Huckabee's speechs?  The reason I say this is I believe that Obama is actually getting some of the best material from Huck, or maybe they are both going for the same kind of people.  An article about their similarities would be very good.
You will never regret a vote for Mike Huckabee.  I am so grateful for a candidate I can respect to vote for.  His positions are ones I can support and live with after I support, which is critical.  And I will never have to apologize to my children for him as our president.  All of the US will regret passing up on this rare chance if they stay home on voting day or cave into fear and vote for someone they don't really want.  Mr. Huckabee has taken many courageous stands on our behalf and deserves no less than that we do the same.  Check out what his positions are at www.mikehuckabee.com and for something really amazing listen to his cpac statements on UTube.  Your support for the 3/4 primaries is critical.  He has gotten as far as he has on the support of the everyday American citizen, and dollar for dollar spending less than a fourth of other candidates.  Ever wish there was a better candidate as a choice to vote for?  We have just been given this choice.
Go Huck. The Dallas Morning News has endorsed him. Here's an excerpt:

"We look forward to having him around to help shape and lead the Republican Party beyond November. That's why we encourage Texas Republicans to mark their ballots for Mr. Huckabee in the GOP primary: to demonstrate to the party's elite that Mr. Huckabee and his vision have a solid constituency."

What a pity more people didn't see this sooner.
