Huckabee: Debate not BBQ

Posted: Monday, March 03, 2008 11:44 AM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ's Matthew Berger
DALLAS, Texas -- Huckabee criticized McCain Monday for serving barbecue to reporters on the day Huckabee had asked him to debate.

"I think his time would have been better spent at a debate and I think the people of Texas should take that into consideration when they vote either today or tomorrow," he said at a press conference. "They ought to think about, you know, what would be a better use of his time, being in Texas having a debate on issues that affect Texans or serving BBQ to the media?"

Not only did he think he is a better candidate, he said he's a better cook.

"Actually I would put my ribs to the test of anybody's, they're pretty darn good," he said. "But you know, we've been campaigning non stop and working hard because we feel like the people of Texas deserve this discussion, this debate, and I'm disappointed we never had that debate that we should have had.  I think Sen. McCain should have come to Texas, we should have had the debate on television, and let the people hear the differences. If they they then decided differently, the would have made an informed and intelligent decision."

And he took a final jab at McCain's lack of executive experience.

"Let me tell you, running a government is much different than making speeches about a government," he said.

Huckabee spoke at Southern Methodist University, the first of five rallies he planned for the day before the Texas primary. He drew about 200 people to the school, who were greeted by Chuck Norris.

Afterward, Huckabee stressed again that he would exit the race when a candidate reaches the 1,191 delegate threshold, and said he would campaign for whoever the Republican presidential candidate may be.

"If somebody gets 1,191 delegates then ... we're gonna recognize that the nomination has been essentially clinched," he said, noting the definition of pledged delegates varies. "Now that doesn't mean that we just disappear and go away and not continue a message.  We're gonna make sure our nominee wins -- I hope it's me.  But there's a lot of, a lot of time left between, now and not only the convention but the election to make sure the Republican party maintains the White House."

Plane Hijinks
OVER DALLAS -- So the Huckabee press plane has a game: if you catch someone napping, you take a picture with a sheet of paper in front of him that has a funny caption. Silly, yes, but it passes the time as we make several stops a day from one rally to the next.

We got the senior campaign staffers and most of the press. Chuck Norris' caption read "M.H. (Mike Huckabee) could beat me up." Jim Gilchrist, the head of the Minuteman Project, had one that said "Suit and Tie Made in Mexico."

Well this morning, we got the candidate.  Actually, his daughter did the dirty work, placing the paper in front of him at his front row seat and snapping the photo before he could wake, eliciting cheers from the press corps in the back. She quickly declared the picture "off the record."

The caption: "If I close my eyes, it feels like Air Force One."

Why no hilliary questions for my man hucky, when are you getting out .
Mike Huckabee and his followers are conservatives first and Republicans second. The GOP “Good-O-Boys” are republicans first and just fall in line as the democrats just fall in love with their candidate.

John McCain has moved the conservative party to the center where the moderates and liberal GOP members hang out. He is not planning to energize the conservative base to be elected. 20 % of the conservatives will not vote this election, another 10% will not vote for McCain, and most of the Huckabee and Paul supports will not vote for McCain. So where is McCain and the GOP planning to get the votes? Answer, the moderate and liberal conservatives. Game over for the conservative base of the GOP if Huckabee is not successful!
"But you know, we've been campaigning non stop"

That's a lie.  Remember your little rendezvous to the Cayman Islands Huckabee?  Cash your $25,000 check yet?  You're probably the laziest campaigner out there.  In some ways I don't blame you though. All you need to do is show up at a few churches right before the vote and the sheep come a runnin!
This is a memo about a meeting that the Obama camp said never occurred, and if it did occur, the Obama camp said NAFTA was not discussed. Now it appears, the Obama camp accepts the meeting DID occur and NAFTA WAS discussed, but not in the way portrayed in the meeting. Riiiight. Thank Gawd for the Obama Rules. Hope they hold if he is the nominee. Imagine what the coverage would be like if this was a Clinton economic advisor.
So, John "No Time To Debate" McCain found time to feed the press instead? What an insult to the voters in Texas, Ohio and other upcoming primary states.
I sincerely hope GOP voters will send a strong message by voting for Mike Huckabee or Ron Paul. The Republican electorate deserves FAR better than this overtly-manipulated, back-room-deal-arranged, insulting anointment of a nominee.
Mike, go debate Hillary. She's not going have anything to do in a couple of days.
Hillary needs the Republican vote in Texas more than you do. Keep the democrat fight going!!!
The people of Texas and Ohio would have been well served by a debate. I never thought the day would come when I would agree with Newt Gingrich, but I am finding myself doing so when he talked about conservatives and the Republican party. Let's face it, neither party represents the views of many of us. Mike Huckabee does.
He's got a point, doesn't he ?

I support Obama, but I really think that McCain is hiding from Huckabee. I hope Huck's work pays off - at least to underline his point.

Obviously, John McCain was afraid of a debate with Mike Huckabee.  He's a bit too overconfident -- and being a native Texas (now transplanted to another state) --- I do hope that Texas recognizes the snow job done by the media and the party brass in the failure to even acknowledge Mr. Huckabee as a viable candidate.  The current polls would indicate that Texans have been duped --- something the party and McCain backers are banking on.  Mr. McCain obviously believes he doesn't have to spend time with the voters in order to secure the nomination -- only the media.   How sad.
It is left to Texas to carry on the good work that Iowa started. If they fail the nation they have only themselves to blame when troubled times come.

Maybe Mr. Huckabee should be the inaugural candidate of the Bible Party (perhaps with Roy Moore as a running mate), so the Republicans can forget this soft-headed need to force social conservatism on people, and get back to limited government and fiscal responsibility.  Then, with the vote duly split, the Democrats can finally focus on fixing the right wing's errors of the last several years.
This is an OUTRAGE!!!  The fact that McCain won't go head to head with Huckabee in a debate just wreaks of (not the "valiant war hero" everyone refers to him as) something far less than honorable or respectable.  As a voter from Indiana, one who has not yet cast her vote in the primary, I am greatly disappointed!!!
McCain is obviously afraid to debate Huckabee.

Who wants a president that cannot be man anough to debate a fellow republican.

Shame Shame McCain!
Although, Huckabee is right.  There has not been one debate with just McCain and Huckabee since Romney dropped out.  McCain is expecting to wrap up the nomination, officially, on March 4th.  McCain has no intention of debating Huckabee, especially slipping up in a debate, that would give Democrats ammunition against him in a general election.
YES WE CAN!!!
Last Thursday when Huckabee extended an invitation to John McCain for a debate, McCain replied, "I don't have time for a debate". HMMM....what a liar. He can spend a whole Saturday in Arizona serving BBQ. Huckabee has a full schedule with 6 stops today and yet Huckabee is willing to sqeeze in time for a debate and McCain says "I don't have time". WOW!
PTE said:  " Let's face it, neither party represents the views of many of us. Mike Huckabee does."

I agree that neither party represents most Americans views, because Americans have shifting opinions that blow in the wind in the direction of whomever can brain wash them into believing.

I've known many people in my time, but I'd say that probably 1-2% of those people are represented by that typically slick Arkansan.  Huck is all about cute comments & smoke and mirrors.

McCain is a foolish old man.  HRC is just a coo-coo who thinks she was President when Bill was in office, and Obama is inspirationally frightening.  Oh yeah, Nader....worthless unless it's the seat belt law.

Lesser of 5 evils = Obama
I, too, think a debate was warranted.  I also think it telling that McCain chose to entertain the media this weekend---though I guess you should always thank those who give you gifts (and believe me the media sure "gifted" McCain with their shut-out of Huckabee).  Remember the saying, "you're known by the company you keep".
Geez, If Huckabee and the main stream media can be so easily duped to believe Gilchrist is the head of the Minuteman organization, then what kind of President would he be? We already know how bad the MSM is. Almost every border security and anti-illegal immigration group in the country has denounced Gilchrist's endorsement of Huckabee- why, because Huckabee is weak on the issue and we don't trust him and no one trusts Gilchrist who is a sham artist - he has no organization and does not represent the Minutemen, he represents one person -Jim Gilchrist, what a joke.
McCain is just shoring up his cozy relationship with the press.  He needs them to continue to call him a "maverick" despite his hawkish war views and his embrace of anti-Semitic, anti-Catholic, anti-gay, anti-everyone who isn't a Christopath John Hagee.

After all, we mustn't have McCain subject to the same scrutiny about who endorses him that Obama is.  That wouldn't be fitting.  Nor would it be as profitable to General Electric and the other corporate owners of the print and broadcast media.
Let's be honest tho, Mike wasn't kicking and screaming about having a dabate.  Would have loved seeing it
Who would have thought a former war hero would be scared to face a former preacher? Guess it's cuz Huckabee stands firm for the majority of things on the GOP platform. Don't follow the media's lead.  Vote informed.  Have you done this candidate match quiz?
http://www.aslan-studios.com/vote08/ Vote for the candidate that matches YOUR views the most. For me that candidate is Mike Huckabee.
I like Huckabee... well, other than "rewrite the constitution under God's Laws".

He has a lot of good ideas in the way of the Economy and other things.  I love the Fair Tax idea, I've read up on it a lot since he's brought it up.  He has some really good common sense ideas.  But I just can't support him being President after his speech about rewriting the Constitution.
We don't need a leader who will hide from adversity!! John McCain insulted Mike Huckabee and all the american people. He doesn't need voters, he's won the nomination in his eyes. November will be interesting!!
Seems like most Repubs are unhappy with their presidential choice(s). Well if you are that unhappy than you should vote for the democrat that represents change, that represents a new direction for our country. Right now we are touching the bottom and the only way to go is up. Obama offers that change. So let's unite America and leave behind the red/blue divide and go with Obama in 08!!! After all it beats Clinton and Nader and McCain will jsut give us an extension of the Bush years ( and even the most hardcore repubs do not want that)
I will never vote for McCain.  His whole attitude is to take voters for granted.  It is not over until it is brokered.  Everyone that wants to stop snobish McCain, please vote for Governor Huckabee.  When we get to the convention we can then decide on a candidate that respects Catholics and conservative voters, even if it is not Governor Huckabee.
Debates really don't tell candidates' actual policy positions. They, like Hillary, will simply rehearse for the debate and say whatever is approrpiate. The best to get a gimplse of a candidate's positions, is to go to their website. Debates during the primary season are much mroe like eating contests or a contest for aspiring lawyers. The only reason Hillary tends to excel in debates is because she is 61 years old and has already polished her debating skills as a lawyer for 15 years and from watching her hubby and other politicians -- so much for rehearsing. 20 debates and very little new twists... 20 boring debates, though it is fun watching the candidates cat fight.
Huckabee, you can debate me via instant emssaging, then we'll have BBQ afterwards. You are so much like Hillary.

McCain should be ashamed, he said he couldn't debate Huckabee because "he had a hard and fast schedule" It's more than an insult to America. Serving BBQ to the media instead of a debate? What a joke. Just like his nomination. I pray Huckabee beats Mccain in Texas. Even though I'm conservative, I used to like Mccain because I thought he was honest; before the media bias and his endorsers stood up and I realized how this whole thing seems rigged.. Where did our democracy go? I'm glad Huckabee is still in the race, I pray I can point him out to my kids and say with pride "look, there is our President." If McCain is the nominee, I'm dropping out of the GOP.
I hope the people of Texas realize this inaction from McCain is not just rude, but also concedes that he fears a side by side with Huckabee. If he believed he was the better candidate, McCain would use the opportunity to get some face time with Texas and the rest of the U.S.

Loser.
Well... at least now I know.  I was just trying to find out what had happened with the debate invitation.  After attending the Waco, TX rally and seeing/hearing  Mike Huckabee in person, I can understand why McCain was afraid to take any chances debating him.  What is most frustrating about all of this, is that so many are not going to be given the opportunity to hear/see the profound differences between the two candidates with a televised one-on-one debate.  What has happened with this election is a slap in the face to Americans who have consistently voted in the Republican party.  I am proud that I voted for Mike Huckabee and continue to pray for him and for our great country.
McCain is a lost cause for the republican party!  Having to watch OVER AND OVER AND OVER again on EVERY National Television Network the debates of the Democratic party made it look like we have no other party running!  It's the same way with every newspaper or website for news....All about Obama and Hillary!  John McCain, I'll bet if you act fast you might be able to get the democratic party to pay for that media bash bbq you had over the weekend.
Lost all respect for McCain
BL in Ohio,

Obama talks about change.  Huckabee accomplishes it. Read what a former an Arkansan said after moving back:  "But when I moved back to Arkansas in 2003, I found a transformed state. The roads were incredible. There were plenty of jobs (not always the case growing up in NW Arkansas). I could get a drivers' license in a few minutes, right there at the DMV (very much UNLIKE Southern California!!). My four children were covered by my rather modest State income tax under a pretty efficient ARKids program. What's more, I found the definition of marriage written into the state constitution, as well as a human life amendment and countless other legal bulwarks against today's assault on life." Read more of his story at
http://forum.hucksarmy.com/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=11135
The changes were better in IL after Obama LEFT the IL Senate. Change is only good if the changes are good.  Huckabee is the only candidate with government executive experience.  Huckabee has experience being on call to handle emergency situations 24/7.  Huckabee is ready to lead; because he has been leading all his life.
I heard an ultra-right fly wanted to debate Mccain, too, and the coward refused to do it.  Instead he stepped on him and squashed him...oh, wait, that was Huckabee, wasn't it?
Mike Huckabee is the only candidate who is right on the Fair Tax, right on energy independence, right on national defense, right on immigration, right on health care, and right on education.  Nothing else matters.
@ BL: Huckabee's widely-quoted comment was a simple reference to his goal of using a Constitutional amendment to ban abortion and define marriage. Of course, such amendments require Congressional passage- a President can't just "re-write the Constitution". The comment, taken out of context, sounds much different from its intended meaning.
Rest assured, Governor Huckabee has complete respect for our democracy and separation of church and state. Don't let an isolated quote out of context keep you from voting for a candidate whose positions on the important issues agree with yours.
Though he has been painted as the evangelical candidate, Huckabee has millions who support him because of his platform on illegal immigration, border security, American sovereignty, the FairTax, and myriad other "non-Christian" issues.
Matt in Vegas: Obama's 300 billion dollar price tag (for what I call his "Sunshine and Lollipops" platform) is waaaaaaaaaaaaay scarier than you're acknowledging! Remember, the government is never going to do anything for you without asking for something first...
"But I just can't support him being President after his speech about rewriting the Constitution."

Did you hear that speech, or hear the media twist his words?  He said it is easier to rewrite the constitution than to rewrite God's laws. He was explaining that the constitution is not unchanging the ways God's laws are. Gov. Huckabee was only speaking of a constitutional amendment to ban abortion and gay marriage - he was not saying he wanted to rewrite the entire constitution. The media rewrote Gov. Huckabee's speech.
Since Ron Paul and Mike Huckabee are still in the race, why doesn't McCain debate them since he has really nothing to lose.  It is so close to him winning the nomination.  It is unlikely that either of them could win enough to beat him.
How arrogant and presumptuous of MCCAIN to think he can ignore the fact that over 30,000 Americans (from an online petition and also from those on Mike Huckabee's website) have asked for a debate between Huckabee and McCain before March 4th! McCain has been off this entire weekend, relaxing, no less, while Huckabee has been out stumping non-stop!  TEXANS:  DOES THAT TELL YOU WHO WILL WORK HARDEST FOR YOUR INTERESTS??  DOES THAT TELL YOU ANYTHING ABOUT HOW MCCAIN FEELS ABOUT YOU AND YOUR RIGHT TO DETERMINE WHO THEY SHOULD VOTE FOR?  Come on, TEXAS,...show McCain a thing or two!  VOTE HUCKABEE and send that little ole man a message!!
Mike Huckabee is the candidate for me.  Amazing that he has stood his ground after, the onslaught of negative press.    Anyone who does their own research on where he stands on issues, and on his record, will realize what a legitimate candidate he is.

As usual, the gracious comments are from Huckabee supporters.

The name calling, slanderous, gutter talk comes from the others.  I guess that is what you might call politics as usual.  I am SICK of it.
David, which Huckabee position is right on Immigration?  He's changed it significantly... and what exactly is his policy on national security?  He usually dodges the question...

I would think that foreign policy and the economy also "matter"...
Tina, I also heard Gov. Huckabee say that because science is always changing and the words of his religion aren't, he'll believe his religion over science.  To elect a man President who will knowingly choose ignorance over science is incomprehensibly irresponsible.  Also, the difference between rewriting the Constitution to diminish the rights of certain Americans and not others is different only in degree from rewriting the whole thing.  Both are unacceptable.  Good thing the guy doesn't have - er - a prayer in this election.
"McCain, the war hero." Yeh, scared to debate, some hero.

"McCain the straight talker." Yeh right. Said he was to busy to debate. Then he entertained the press and elite this weekend. Now that's straight talk for you.

No wonder people are deserting the GOP in droves.
I think McCain figures if he can get enough delegates on March 4th, he's the nominee and no one can contest him, so by cancelling the debate, he can avoid being put on display for all of America to see the bad choice they've made.  Because, remember it's not just Mike Huckabee (a man of charm and eloquence to be sure) he'd have to debate, it's also Ron Paul, who routinely challenges him on economics, a very weak subject for McCain and his contrasting views on the war paint McCain as the warmonger he is.  At least we know McCain is a realist, he knows he can't get out of a debate with those two looking good.  I just can't believe he was allowed to get away with it.  I know Dr. Paul had it on his schedule many weeks in advance.  I'm not really sure why "the network" gave in to the desires of just one candidate without considering the others or for that matter the American voters.
Huckabee should put up and debate Ron Paul to prove his genuine interest in debating the candidates. The two of them could use the debate to go after McCain.
McCain should debate ME because I have as much chance of winning the Republican nomination as does Huckabee.
Mike Huckabee has been the only candidate that has been a statesmen like candidate.  Every other candidate has been status quo, same old rhetoric and liberal agenda.  Mike Huckabee has fresh ideas that make sense and he has a positive outlook that would make being an American special again.  I would be proud to have him as our Commander in Chief!  I'm in Indiana and I am offended that anyone would suggest he get out of the race before we have an opportunity to vote.  Why should blue states determine the candidate that the red states are going to have to put in office!  Let's go to the convention and choose the real conservative!  My vote is for Mike Huckabee!
