Huckabee: Debate not BBQ

Posted: Monday, March 03, 2008 11:44 AM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ's Matthew Berger
DALLAS, Texas -- Huckabee criticized McCain Monday for serving barbecue to reporters on the day Huckabee had asked him to debate.

"I think his time would have been better spent at a debate and I think the people of Texas should take that into consideration when they vote either today or tomorrow," he said at a press conference. "They ought to think about, you know, what would be a better use of his time, being in Texas having a debate on issues that affect Texans or serving BBQ to the media?"

Not only did he think he is a better candidate, he said he's a better cook.

"Actually I would put my ribs to the test of anybody's, they're pretty darn good," he said. "But you know, we've been campaigning non stop and working hard because we feel like the people of Texas deserve this discussion, this debate, and I'm disappointed we never had that debate that we should have had.  I think Sen. McCain should have come to Texas, we should have had the debate on television, and let the people hear the differences. If they they then decided differently, the would have made an informed and intelligent decision."

And he took a final jab at McCain's lack of executive experience.

"Let me tell you, running a government is much different than making speeches about a government," he said.

Huckabee spoke at Southern Methodist University, the first of five rallies he planned for the day before the Texas primary. He drew about 200 people to the school, who were greeted by Chuck Norris.

Afterward, Huckabee stressed again that he would exit the race when a candidate reaches the 1,191 delegate threshold, and said he would campaign for whoever the Republican presidential candidate may be.

"If somebody gets 1,191 delegates then ... we're gonna recognize that the nomination has been essentially clinched," he said, noting the definition of pledged delegates varies. "Now that doesn't mean that we just disappear and go away and not continue a message.  We're gonna make sure our nominee wins -- I hope it's me.  But there's a lot of, a lot of time left between, now and not only the convention but the election to make sure the Republican party maintains the White House."

Plane Hijinks
OVER DALLAS -- So the Huckabee press plane has a game: if you catch someone napping, you take a picture with a sheet of paper in front of him that has a funny caption. Silly, yes, but it passes the time as we make several stops a day from one rally to the next.

We got the senior campaign staffers and most of the press. Chuck Norris' caption read "M.H. (Mike Huckabee) could beat me up." Jim Gilchrist, the head of the Minuteman Project, had one that said "Suit and Tie Made in Mexico."

Well this morning, we got the candidate.  Actually, his daughter did the dirty work, placing the paper in front of him at his front row seat and snapping the photo before he could wake, eliciting cheers from the press corps in the back. She quickly declared the picture "off the record."

The caption: "If I close my eyes, it feels like Air Force One."

CONSERVATIVE4LIFE....McCain doesn't want to debate Huckabee, he won't get my vote in November. If I were the  Texan voters I would not vote for him. If you're really a conservative why did you vote for a democrat like McCain.McCain is not totally pro-life.His experience in military won't solve the problem in Iraq and Israeli-Arab conflict.
KRIS STL....why I don't want to vote for  democrat candidates...they're pro-abortion, they're pro-gay marriage.McCain is a democrat also.He's not totally pro-life that's why  GOP voters are confused,is he really a true conservative or what.
folks time to put gomer pyle back in the box look at his record in arkansas it's a joke.this guy all of a sudden wants to secure border.reminds ma of shummer put a camera or microphone and the phony preacher jumps ot of the bushes and says AW SCHUCKS!
"The truth will set you free." Stay with it, Mike Huckabee.

America needs the truth...and common sense to today's problems (so distorted by the media, 'career' politicians and special interest groups). Common sense to today's problems isn't common. Mike Huckabee has common sense. The problem is that those who don't have it fear him. This includes the media! They seem to control the 'spotlight' today. The conscience of the American people will speak in November. Let the debates begin.
Tina Mallory - no that's a lie. Huckabee fully intends to mix language of the Bible and the Constitution through amendments.  Period!  Heard the speech, and no I don't need to media to spoon feed me. Huckabee scares the heck out of me. He panders to a fundamentalist version of Christianity but in the end this is all about Mike Huckabee.  At least by staying in the race now he can ask more for his speaking fees and maybe sell a few books in the process.
"Rest assured, Governor Huckabee has complete respect for our democracy and separation of church and state."

That's a bunch of bull, not that Huckabee could even lasso one.  Huckabee is the face of American religious extremism blended with politics.  The only reason he want to abolish the IRS is so that the churches that promote him won't get hauled off to jail or have their tax-exempt status revoked by mixing politics and religion.
The FairTax system, while it has much to be commended for, in the end will do one thing: increase our dependency on Government. Why? Instead of having just the poor of our society waiting each month for their government check to come in the mail to buy groceries, we'll have EVERYONE in the US waiting each month for their government (prebate) check to come in the mail to buy groceries.

Huckabee a Conservative!!?  Sure doesn't think like one.
I think voter's deserved a debate between McCain, Huckabee and Paul. I agree with Huckabee's letter to McaCain "to have a real discussion about there visions for this Country." McCain can't even debate to reach over to the conservatives, yet want's our vote. What an insult to voter's. But Huckabee gives us a voice and a choice. It is funny how people attack Huckabee and his supporters on there faith. Yet, other candidates claim to be Christian, but what kind of Christian are they if they don't support (walk the talk) the values of there faith. That would go for any faith. I guess there faith does not define them at all. What good is there faith then. That would say something of there character.
