Hillary the fighter

A Clinton staffer commented several months ago -- before the senator lost her much-vaunted "aura of inevitability" and placed third in the Iowa caucuses -- that she, and in fact the Clintons as a rule, did not make a practice of negative campaigning. Sure, she would defend herself vigorously if attacked, the staffer added, but she would not attack first.

In November, at the Iowa Democratic Party pep rally that was the Jefferson-Jackson dinner, Clinton said she and her fellow contenders for the nomination shouldn't be bashing each other, they should instead "turn up the heat" on the Republicans.

But that is so last year.

Fast-forward to 2008. In the weeks since the Super Tuesday contests on February 5, Clinton has lost 11 contests in a row, a reality that would likely have already killed the candidacy of any other politician. Her campaign has responded by going increasingly negative, criticizing Obama for his eloquent use of words -- including those of his friend, Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick -- for his apparent decision to back away from a pledge to accept public financing in the general election; for his ties to indicted real estate developer Tony Rezko whose trial begins today; for news that his economic adviser met with Canadian officials and allegedly downplayed the campaign's criticism of NAFTA; and for Obama's failure to hold "substantive" hearings on the issue of NATO in Afghanistan as chair of a Senate subcommittee.

Indeed, the Clinton campaign has just released a negative TV ad that blasts Obama on that last point.

These hits have not gone unanswered. In fact, the Obama camp has often responded with lightning speed, like on Friday when -- within hours -- they rebutted a Clinton ad featuring sleeping children and a ringing telephone that sought to portray her as better prepared to deal with a national security crisis.

All of this is arguably fair game in a tough election fight, especially with so much at stake. But it's hard not to describe it as negative campaigning.

For the record, Clinton generally calls this kind of thing "drawing contrasts" or "drawing distinctions" between her and her competitor. And in doing so, the junior senator from New York has taken to speaking more and more about the importance of being a fighter.

She was joined on stage in Austintown, OH on Sunday by middleweight boxing champion Kelly Pavlik, in part to symbolize her own fighting spirit. "We need someone in the White House again who is a fighter. We need a fighter, a doer and a champion in the White House," she told the crowd. A few hours later at a rally in Akron, she promised to be that kind of president. "I'm here today because I want you to know that I'm a fighter, a doer and a champion and I will go to work for you."

A quick look at some of the highlights from the latest onslaught of bad vibes:

-- Here's Clinton at the GM Lordstown plant in Warren, OH on Valentine's Day: "Over the years, you've heard plenty of promises from plenty of people in plenty of speeches, and some of those speeches were probably pretty good. But speeches don't put food on the table. Speeches don't fill up your tank. Speeches don't fill your prescriptions or do anything about that stack of bills that keeps you up at night. That's the difference between me and my Democratic opponent: My opponent makes speeches. I offer solutions... It is one thing to get people excited. I want to empower you. This is not about me. This is about you."

More: "There's a big difference between us: Speeches versus solutions, talk versus action. You know, some people may think words are change, but you and I know better. Words are cheap."

-- A week later at the Austin debate, Clinton sought to highlight Obama's use of a large chunk of a 2006 speech by Patrick, a paragraph the Illinois senator had called up to respond to her Lordstown attack on the power of words. "Lifting whole passages from someone else's speeches is not change you can believe in. It's change you can Xerox."

-- And in Dallas on Saturday, Clinton said, "My opponent, he basically says there are two reasons why he is qualified to be commander in chief. He gave a speech against the Iraq war in 2002 and I give him credit for that. He gave a speech at an anti-war rally. Well, then within two years he had decided that maybe he wasn't sure which way he would have actually voted if he had been a senator and that maybe George Bush wasn't doing such a bad job in Iraq after all ... and then he often cites on his resume the fact that he is the chairman of the subcommittee on European Affairs, which has jurisdiction over NATO, which as you know is our ally in Afghanistan. But he didn't tell you until the debate the other night that he never even held a single substantive hearing to figure out what he could do better."

So much for keeping the heat on the Republicans.

It's understandable that the intense political battle being waged has led to more pointed criticism, attacks, and drawing of contrasts. It may also be true that a fierce competition makes all players better. The question many Democrats are asking is: When will the acrimony end and the healing begin? And it's unclear whether yet another Super Tuesday will provide an answer.

You mean Clinton lied and is going against her word?!

Big surprise there...

I doubt she'll have the integrity to quit after Tuesday if she doesn't get COMPLETELY blown out of the water.  Winning by a few percentage points just isn't going to cut it for her.
Yeah, I'm done with the Clintons. Although the South Carolina stuff really bothered me, I had decided to let it go because it was said by surrogates, etc. - it wasn't her. Last night's 60 Minutes interview with Clinton really ended it for me.  I could not believe she was so equivocal when it came to the Muslim smear e-mail! It made me realize that Clinton is just a political opportunist, and has little redeeming value as a person. If she manages to somehow overcome Obama's delegate lead and win the nomination, I won't vote for her in the general. I have to draw a line in the sand, and her nasty turn last night was it for me.
I'd rather have a uniter than a fighter.
Typical Clinton. Talk out of both sides of the mouth. Her closing "statement" has worked. I've decided.  I'm voting Obama.
Mr. Mrs. and Ms. Clinton are a big dinasty hard to defeat. They are the ones to rule over us. They are the right ones for this democracy. We need a family to rule us. Whatever it takes to get to the White House.

Hillary 2008' - do whatever it takes....
Clinton is jumping on an AlLEGED downplaying of NAFTA.

If you read the memo and the responses their is real doubt about how the Canadian author of the report charcterized the conversation and there are still suspicious questions as to how the "leak" happened.

If you are familiar with the Harper Conservatives stringent control of governmental information in Canada, the notion of a "leak" like this are suspicious indeed.

Also don't forget Bill's trip to central Asia with the Canadian businessman.

For me, Hillary lining up with McCain on this one, suggests corporate interests are looking out for each other.
So one who supposedly does not make a practice of negative campaigning but who does so now because she is behind is a fighter? That's not being a fighter. That's being a desparate whiner.
Why is there no talk about the wyoming or mississippi contests later this month? If only certain states predict presidents then why do the rest of us vote at all?
Oh my how things change.

It never ceases to amaze me when candidates plainly and clearly "go negative".  Not only does it reek of desparation, but it astounds me that people think (and it may be the case) that these ads work.  Well, if they work, I guess we'll keep hearing more of them.  But I can tell you they don't work on me.  Increasingly, I'm finding myself voting against the mud-slingers.

And the hypocrisy of Hillary Clinton on this point is worth noting.  It does reek of "she shall stop at nothing".

I firmly believe that the nastiness and negative campaigning, in this year more than any other year...is a bad misread on what the electorate will stand for.

Vote positive, vote for change, vote for hope.  Obama 08
I wish the media would give the same scrutiny to Obama that they give to Hillary Clinton.

They have made her jump over such higher hurdles than Obama--which is not his fault, but it is nonetheless distasteful journalism.
Negative with a capital "N" is putting it mildly. I'm a life-long Democrat and I have to say I have more respect for the way John McCain and Mike Huckabe are conducting themselves right now in their own contest that I had and then lost for Hillary Clinton throughout this process since February 5th. Just like her claimed to be "victimized" supporters continually threaten no support for Sen. Obama if he wins the nomination, same can be said about this voter when it comes to Bill Clinton's wife.
Clinton should GET OUT Now   !!!

She has used up all her goodies, and should run for the NY Hills
It is ABOUT TIME!!Obama deserves everything he gets from now on...its called politics and the Clintons have been put through the wringer by right and now, left wingers. Get used to it you big baby!!!There is MUCH MORE to come when the swiftboaters get ahold of you.
Does this honestly surprise anyone?  She is the one who needs a big-time reality check.  Vote no to Clinton!
Clinton talks out of both her mouths.....she and bill.
They lie, cheat, steal and who knows whatever.......

They deny....even question the american language...
what is   IS........

Anything goes with the clintons.......their old usual selfiness......
Can you feel it?

The media has turned on Obama.
Even Rush Limbaugh has come to Hillary's side.

It only took a few weeks for people to get OBAMA FATIGUE.

Hillary Clinton for President.
That was Athena Jones, spokesperson and apologist for team Obama and also apparently somehow loosely affiliated with this news organization...
Bill Clinton Oct. 2004:

"One of Clinton's laws of politics is, if one candidate is trying to scare you, and the other one is trying to make you think, if one candidate's appealing to your fears, and the other one's appealing to your hopes. You better vote for the person who wants you to think and hope."
Senator Clinton fights A LOT. This is a central flaw in her run for President, because she sees many people as enemies to overcome, not as allies to win over.

In 1993, she closed out everybody, even Democrats, from working on health care reform. As a result, when the plan was revealed, nobody liked it, and the attempt at reform was a UTTER FAILURE. She even treated fellow well-meaning Democrats as enemies. How was she gong to win over the Republicans and other interests?

Her entire campaign she's been fighting again-- fighting dirty. She started the negative campaigning when she sent out anti-Obama mailers in New Hampshire, anti-Obama radio ads in South Carolina, and tried to forcefully prevent voters she thought might vote for Senator Obama in Nevada. These actions occurred early in the campaign (these were 3 of the first 4 states that voted).

She fights so much that we see that she does not fight for us, but for herself. She fights so much that we see that she is only good at making people fearful, and not supportive of her.

Do we voters need a champion? Yes. But is any surprise that majority of us embrace someone who can get things done without creating enemies everywhere?

We are tired of all the fighting. When people fight, only injury results, and nothing positive is accomplished. That is why support of Senator Clinton is so dangerous. For all her good ideas, she cannot get them accomplished. And, simultaneously, why casting a vote for Senator Obama so important, because he will actually be able to deliver on his promises.
If this thing goes beyond tomorrow, the White House will go back to the Republicans.  There is no way to put this genie back in the bottle.  Hillary Clinton has done to the Democrats what she has already done to the nation at large...divided and factionalized.  The longer it goes on, the nastier each side of supporters is getting with the other.  Both sides now speak about the other candidate like they are pure evil, even though their policies and experience, let's be honest, are very similar.  The losing side is either going to stay home, or vote for the respectable moderate Republican on the other side, who is not the "boogie man" that other Republicans have been.
MSNBC call it attacks, voters call it the truth - FINALLY!

Go Hilllary! Snap your fingers and break this spell.
The 7 stages of Hillary:

1.  Amnesia (I don't remember)
2.  Plead the 5th(I might show my taxes papers later)
3.  Sympathy vote method
4.  Anger
5.  Mental Break Down
6.  Feeling of defeat (Ohio and Texas are the most
important; I mean only Ohio is important; I mean
that if Obama doesn't win big, he's losing his
    momentum).
7.  Final stage (not yet entered): REALITY CHECK!

She will do anything to win, say anything to win, and throw the Democratic Party under the bus if she doesn't get her way. That's why feminists and women around the country can't support her: it's NOT because she's a woman, it's because she's Hillary.
People are too dumb in this country to see past her polarization, divisiveness and negativity.  Maybe we are not ready for Senator Obama.  Congratulations Senato McCain, you just won the Presidency.
Does this person not see the damage she, er, do these people not see the damage they are doing within their own political party?  Both Clintons, for me, are lowering themselves even below the gutter they lived in since 1992...good lord help us!
End the negativity and acrimony. Vote Obama and let Clinton go back to stewing in her own anger and frustration. Oh boo-hoo, you thought it was going to be a cakewalk and you would ascend the throne. Well News-flash, this isnt a monarchy and you arent even close to royalty. Go back home and rein in your Billy .. if you can. What youre doing now is just showing how power hungry and do-anything-to-win you are, even at the cost of her own party.
I guess if you look at the polls...at least 3 out today showing Clinton is increasing her lead with negative ads...I prove that we voters must love negative ads.
Clinton has managed to inflame most of the Muslim world with this type of stuff she's pulling (the photo, the 60 mins thing, the Muslim email from her camp in Iowa).  If we weren't already hated by most of the world thanks to Bush, she's just made it worse.
It is odd that after the last 7 years of constant endless fighting and bickering with precious little to show for it, that any politician would stake their candidacy on their ability to fight.  All of us know that politicians can fight, we have been watching the fighting for years now.

What we need now is something different.  It isn't simple bi-partisanship.  Instead, it is mutual respect.  I can disagree with my family without needing to use a so-called "nuclear" option, without stopping cold every proposal, without making every moment about who scored the best insult against the other.  Politicians are adults not pre-schoolers; this can be done.

One of the oldest philosphers on this earth, the same one who wrote the brilliant Art of War, Sun-tzu said:

"The best victory is when the opponent surrenders of its own accord before there are any actual hostilities . . . It is best to win without fighting."

Now, I am not suggesting that anyone will "surrender" anything.  What I am suggesting is that just like in any other walk of life, if our representatives approach government as the means of making this Country better, rather than continuously putting the interests of their party above those of this Country, the end result will be better for everyone.

Senator Obama begins with this premise.  Once Senator Obama is President, anyone who begins to "fight" with the politics of the past by placing their party interests over those of the Country will immediately be exposed to anyone in the public who is watching.  Senator Obama isn't joking when he says we, the People, need to keep watching and hold them all -- including him -- accountable.  Using our Right to Petition (given to us by our forefathers in the Constitution of the United States) we can stop meaningless partisan bickering in its tracks and move the debate BACK to what is best.

I am also willing to wager that there are countless numbers of Republicans who are also weary of this costly endless non-productive "fighting."  Plenty of them also want what is best for this Country.  While people may differ on the road forward, in the end most of us DO want what is best for this Country and all of her citizens.  Just like any other disagreement, these folks too can come together, negotiate and reach a solution that benefits everyone.

Yes we can!  Believe it.  Obama '08.
Yes, Mrs. Clinton's a fighter.  Fights not to release her tax documents or "confidential Clinton library documents; fights back timely tears, fights out of the public eye, fights reality at the cost of her party.  And yet, I'd vote for her over McCain.  Barack Obama is an extraordinary person and there aren't many around.  Give America back her moral authority in the world---OBAMA.
The Clintons feel that we owe them something and should crown Hillary.

Say No to Bush/Clinton/Bush/Clinton.

USA is not a monarchy !!
This just in...

MSNBC still in the tank for Obama. No REZKO trial info. Little on the NAFTA, "fib", but we do get a laundry list of Hillary's and ONLY Hillary's negative statements and ads. Bias so blinding that even Stevie Wonder has to wear shades...
Your ratings have tumbled, your blog is sham and shameless shill for Obama. MSNBC sucks and will reap what it has sown.
That was Athena Jones, spokesperson and apologist for team Obama and also apparently somehow loosely affiliated with this news organization...
I'd rather a fighter than a so called uniter, who has no proof of uniting other than saying it in a pretty speech. I don't want to unite with Rush Limbaugh, George Bush, and the rest of those nut jobs on the right side. I want a democratic who believe in democratic values, that is why I am in the democratic party.

If Barack wants me to play "let's make a deal" it only means millions of Americans are going to screwed on a number of issues, specifically healthcare.

Maybe his make a deal attitude will only slow down the disappearing middle class, but you know what I want someone who is going to stop the annhilation and rebuild the class of people who built this freaking country. Not a bunch of college kids and their drink the kool-aid professors, or the liberals who think it is a great idea to have a black man as president because of how the world would view America, or the rich latte-drinking liberals who think they know how the other half live. None of these groups have any friggin idea how the other half live. Ted Kennedy has never had to look at a paycheck and say wow thats alot of money for health insurance, neither has jay rockefeller or john kerry.

There is one thing I can not take more than a republican, and that is a delusional democrat who thinks the capitlist society can be a better place for you and me. I got an idea, if John Kerry, Ted Kennedy, and John Rockefeller gave their fortunes away, made of the backs of poor people, than I would truly believe they care, until that happens, Barack can kiss my..............
Totally agree with Allison's reaction to Clinton's interview on 60 minutes.  Her "weasly" response to the Muslim smear was sooooooo cheap.  I really thought she was better than that.  I am getting ready to make phone calls right now for Obama.
In the months ahead when we have so much at stake, only Barack Obama has the intelligence, judgment, and backing of America to bring us out of the cesspool George Bush has created.  A fighter or scrappy person who loses her temper over trivial things, a person so ingrained in the problems of Washington, D.C., who spends too much time criticizing, complaining and blaming voters and the media for her losses, is NOT the kind of president we need right now.  If you truly care about the future of our country, you'll all cast your votes for Barack Obama!!!  When he talks of the "fierce urgency of now" he really knows what he's talking about!
I'd rather have a uniter than a fighter.

Ron Hussein

--------

Mr. Hussein, can you explain just what Obama has ever united? Maybe you could point to a vote that he made that contributed to a bi-partisan agreement? Just show something that shows he has in the past united people.
Wow. "Rule over us" is hard to handle. I'd prefer someone who doesn't rule at all. Obama 2008.
How much more of the "Music Man", Obama are we going to let keep seeling a marching band, with out one uniform nor instrument???
We need a fighter to run this country. Not a whiney con artist who is reeling in money from the likes of Oprah Winfrey. What a joke this Obama guy is. We want a decent president, not a game show host!
It seems Clinton just scored the single biggest endorsement possible in the Youngstown/Warren area -- Kelly Pavlik.  That could be worth thousands of votes, no kidding.

Having grown up in Ohio, I don't like Obama's chances there.  There is still a ton of racism all over the state.  Clinton is pushing all the right buttons there, it seems to me.
Let's face it. There A LOT of issues out there that Senator Obama's team could be and albeit shoud be using against Senator Clinton. The fact that they are NOT using many of these issues against her is why I support and will vote for Senator Obama. Enough is enough already. I sincerely hope tomorrow puts an end to all this ugliness. I hope the DNC is rolling over in their 'graves'. Clinton is helping the Republicans. How do they think she is going to be the best nominee against McCain when she has spent the last month dividing her own party??? Clinton may have been at one time the inevitable candidate, but the fact that Senator Obama has done so well should send  a clear message that Americans want more. We don't want to be TOLD who our nominee is/should be. I am surpised the Clinton campaign hasn't come out with some story about Obama wearing different colored socks!!! How can this man be President when he can't even get his socks right?? They are ridiculous, condescending and unforgiveable. Please stop the madness already!!!

OBAMA '08 - YES WE CAN!!
Hillary made the pledge not to resort to negative campaigning back then because she felt as though she could walk right back into the White House. She entered into this race with a sense of entitlement.

Well, she quickly learned that no one in this country is entitled to the presidency. Once she realized that, she has done everything from pit blacks against Hispanics, belittle Obama's supporters, to claiming that she has all of this foreign policy experience.

As much as I dislike Mrs. Clinton, I dislike Mr. Oama even more.  He is such an upstart neophyte, a novice with little experience.  Who is he to think he would be the President of the United States?  Grant it, he is a smooth talker and charismatic, but that's all.  He does not have much else going for him.  Oh yes, he has a very leftist leaning wife, who appears to be racist as well.
Uniter - vote for me till I dont need you any more than out of my way i need to campaign. This smut on here is a uniter too.sending out hecklers to stir up trouble that unites .Cannt keep his word on didley. He needs right people around him to help him/Kennedy,Doddand Kerry just a few will help him get rid of old politics???Resko,Ayers,Farrakhan and Rev. Write. gather around!!pressuring delegates and voters.Like the heckler guy will go after blacks that want to vote for Hillary are treated like crap and pressured.Thats a uniter. That folks is old chicago politics his wife said they know well.think while you can
I know it's SOOOOOOOOOOOO negative to call out someone when they are less than worthy. Perhaps all Clinton is doing is pointing out things - that the press should be doing... but the press is in love with Obama and they will NEVER EVER say something bad about - perhaps it's the race thing... It's ok to call a woman a bitch and every day play that role type of her - but if you say anything bad about a Black cancdidate - the media would be racist - and in american you can be sexist and get away with it - but you can't be racist...
All of the points Clinton is making about Obama happen to be true so why is this negative campaigning?  Mr. Obama has never called a meeting of the foreign affairs subcommittee he chairs, his ties to Rezko are deeper that he had indicated previously (he recently admitted to touring the house he bought with Rezko prior to the purchase having previously said he didn't recall every discussing the house with Rezko), and a memo was released comfirming a meeting between an aid to Obama and the Canadian consul essentially comfirming the story that Obama denied ever occuring.  So much for honesty and change.
Go Hillary, People seem to forget where Obama (what's his middle name) went to school and what he trained for.  Wake-up people. Hillary in 08.
No surprise she's going negative. She is exactly the same as Obama on all positions, so people like him better and that's his edge. Her hope is to paint Obama as just as unlikeable as her. How sad.

The only thing that may come of this is that she may force Obama to go negative to beat her. God knows she has said and done so much in just this election to attack. I hope Obama wins Texas before it comes to that. The Democrats can't afford to go negative when the general election in November should be the goal.
Hello people wake up... Lets look at Rosie the riveter, without thousands of (domestic) help would we have won the war? I think not! Women unite and even if Hillary doesnt win the democratic nomination this is ONE WOMAN WHO WILL WRITE IN HER VOTE FOR HILLARY.
