McCain picks up more endorsements

Posted: Monday, March 03, 2008 4:23 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC's Lauren Appelbaum, Victoria Riess, and Lauren Gall
McCain picked up six more endorsements from current GOP governors this morning, bringing his total to 16 -- more than half of all of the Republican governors. Huckabee, who is a former governor himself, has the support of one governor.

Govs. Barbour (MS) and Perdue (GA) announced their support during a press conference in Washington. They also announced four other governors also threw their support behind the Arizona senator. Barbour's state of Mississippi still has yet to vote (March 11).

Both governors thanked Huckabee and showed their respect but urged Republicans who still have primaries ahead to throw their support for McCain. “I respect Mike Huckabee, and I respect Mitt Romney and the others who were in our nomination. We’ve done what primaries are supposed to do," Perdue said. "We’ve winnowed this down to a person who I believe is eminently qualified to lead the United States of America, and I’m happy today to endorse his candidacy along with these five other governors."

Barbour stressed that McCain will be able to unite the conservative base. “When John McCain is running against Fred Thompson or Mike Huckabee or Mitt Romney or Rudy Giuliani -- that’s one thing. But when John McCain is running against Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton, there’s absolutely no question who the conservative candidate is.”

Despite pressure, both governors dodged questions about becoming McCain’s running mate. Barbour said, “I’m on Hurricane duty” and Purdue responded that “only the media” is mentioning him as a possibility “and they're just trying to get rid of me in Georgia.”

The other endorsements came from Gov. John Hoeven of North Dakota, Gov. Bobby Jindal of Louisiana, Gov. Linda Lingle of Hawaii, and Gov. Bob Riley of Alabama, all of whom were not in attendance.

Next endorsement comes from my pitbull who is a warrior and enjoys fighting with me tug of wars.
Congratulations McPitbull.
Chuck Todd's McCain article is very pro-Obama. He stated that it would be unfortunate for a McCain to find himself running against "a Senator named Barak Obama". Todd fawns over Obama.

Chuck Todd and MSNBC/Obama need to realize that Obamania is soooooooo last week. The media is beginning to realize that Obama is an empty suit....just hot air. All talk, no action.
Senator Obama, the Media is now after you...Stay Focus....

We will all be praying a powerful prayer for you tonight....The Devil is never going to make it easy for you...And we all know this.... It has been all of our prayers and the need for change that has guided us this far...We can not and will not let it deter us now.
What a show of courage to step out and endorse the front runner like that.

No wonder people are deserting the GOP in droves.

The Reagan coalition is dead. As the Dallas Morning News observed, Mike Huckabee is the future of the Republican party.
This smells awfully fishy to me.
“When John McCain is running against Fred Thompson or Mike Huckabee or Mitt Romney or Rudy Giuliani -- that’s one thing. But when John McCain is running against Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton, there’s absolutely no question who the conservative candidate is.”

All this goes to show is that republicans are smarter than at least some democrats.  Which ones?  The democrats who would even consider voting for McCain because he is less liberal than whichever candidate is nominated, and tougher on defense. The democrats who will vote for Nader or some other third party candidate rather than either of two perfectly acceptable democratic candidates.  Or, the democrats who would stay home and pout rather than vote for a democratic nominee other than the one they favored.

I think I’ve heard every one of those sentiments expressed out here.

If this kind of thinking persists, then democrats deserve exactly what we get.  What we might very well get is John McCain.
WE can show The Repugs too ladies. Lets vote Hillary in so well there wont be a doubt in all 4 states.Vermont and Rhode Island qwomen are on board as well as Ohio and Texas. Havent had so much fun since dont know when. It is good to be able to make a difference. go Hillery..........

That is truly pathetic, Haley, but well-put. McCain will look like a conservative Republican when contrasted with Hillary or Barack. Talk about damning someone with faint praise!
In late January, the assessment of John McCain by Mississippi Republican Senator Thad Cochran was this:
"The thought of his being president sends a cold chill down my spine," Cochran said about McCain by phone (to the Boston Globe). "He is erratic. He is hotheaded. He loses his temper and he worries me."
In February, Senator Cochran now says, "I am supporting John McCain for the Republican nomination for President."  Faint praise indeed.
Who cares how many Governors support McCain.  I have a number that actually means something:

U.S. Deaths Confirmed By The DoD in Iraq:  3973

Thanks McWar, McBush, McCheney & McRumsfeld!!!!
no clue what this meant.......it sucked
This article is freakin awesome!!!!!@#$%&#$$%@$!
This was pretty good, but I didn't fully understand it.  I don't usually like first reads, but this caught my attention.  Like I said I didn't really understand it.
My fellow Americans,

I have, for too long, endured the divisiveness that continues to erode our country.  For too long, have special interest held sway in our government—this alone is criminal.  And for too long have I watched the price of oil cause inflation in the United States (I believe this is a plot to destabilize our country’s economy by greed oil companies who set record profits each quarter, and others. . .)  For too long, have I watched our valiant men in uniform, sacrificed (some of which were my friends.) As an American, I am tired of seeing my government (who takes 25-30% of my hard earned wages) unable to agree on almost anything.  This has to stop.  Now, I am sure Hillary Clinton would like to bring our broken country back together, but I fear she simply has too much fight in her personality to be anything other than divisive in her politics as we saw in the last debate, and we continue to see in her negative political attacks. Furthermore, I remember the good and the bad times of the previous Clintons, and no matter how many “super delegates are in their pocket,” I do not wish to revisit those times. I have, for too long endured political speeches that promised only more back- biting once the election was won.  However, as I am often reminded, we are all in this together. After all, we are all Americans.  Republicans see things one way, Democrats see it another, Independents like myself are wishing for the two opposing sides to come together because  WE ARE REALLY ALL ON THE  SAME SIDE!—The American Side.  Now I do not want socialism, or anything similar to it.  What I do want is for my government to work and not be dysfunctional. For too long, have we “The People” paid for a government bought by special interest, and for far too long have we sent money to other countries while some Americans are poor, homeless, and helpless.  For too long, has our governments turned their backs on public education, health care, and the working man/woman.  For far too long have I read about our fallen heroes, our soldiers who will never return--home.
As an American, I deserve better from our politicians.

Now, I do not know Obama personally; however, he is the only person who actually has plans of “substance” ready to address these problems.  I say give the man a chance because he seems like our best  “hope” for the future.  Time will tell.
I was thinking about voting for this guy, I must of been nuts. He is way to scary for me, don't know enought about him.
Endorsements aren't worth a lick if the candidate isn't a true representative of the Republican party! This whole Republican process is a sham...McCain doesn't represent our party!  Texas, Ohio, Rhode Island, and Vermont...VOTE for Mike Huckabee-the true Republican candidate that will lead our country forward!  A vote for Huckabee is a vote to deny McCain the needed delegates which in turn will take this decision to the Republican convention! Let's show the Washington senator that we won't be ramrodded into accepting him as our candidate! VOTE HUCKABEE!
"No Country for Old Men", starring John McCain
"Semi-Pro", starring Hillary Clinton
VOTE HUCKABEE! <- I agree
McCain is not a conservative and won't be if he runs against the dems.
Who cares about endorsements? I'm tired of the name dropping and fat-cat endorsements. What about the issues? Today McCain could have debated Huckabee. McCain chose to cook BBQ for the media instead of letting us choose a nominee for ourselves. I pray Texas votes for Huckabee.
Hillary is NOT in the race for what will be best for America. Anyone who believes that knows very little about her or Bill. She is in it for herself, and that will be revealed as soon as tomorrow night.Obama could have all but one of the necessary delegatges necessary to get nominated but Hillary will just dig deeper into her bag of nastiness and ruin any hopes for a Democratic presidency. There is something the matter with that woman! America deserves better. She gets more disgusting every day.
I will not be voting for McCain tommorrow in Ohio and I will write in Mike Huckabee in November. He has treated the Christian Conservatives like mistress's Not attending either =sept 17 or march 3 08 Debates for values voters. He is no real conservative unless you do compare him to the liberals than he is a moderate. And little practical difference. We will see what the GOP thinkd after next november.
I believe Mega Church leader Hagee endorsement is the one to stay focused on.  Here are some of his quotes

Towelheads are coming! "Islam in general -- those who live by the Koran have a scriptural mandate to kill Christians and Jews."

New Orleans is Sodom! "I believe that New Orleans had a level of sin that was offensive to God, and they were recipients of the judgment of God for that."

I guess Sen McCain, no long minds the agents of intolerance.

To think that McCain put his arms around this guy ...

Why would independents vote for McCain.  I at one time thought he would be a viable candidate that if elected he could unite the country back out of the Bush repugnicant gutter the nation has fallen in to.  A Hagee endorsement simply takes the mask off of McCain and exposes him to who he is a Republican who will bow down to the theo-bigots who from the pulpit dug the gutter trench we are in.  The hagee's of the world belong their own pulpit preaching to their own (not the Lords') ignorant few and stay out of government.  Theocrats only know one form of government, "My way or the Highway".  Well it's the peoples way and desire to return democracy and compassion back to Washington.  Hagee, McCain and their cohorts can take our highway back into the gutter!  Vote Anti-Bush and Anti-Republican~!
I'll vote for Huckabee if North Carolina EVER gets to vote. May is a looong way off. So I sit here waiting, watching McCain pick up endorsements and listening to the media say Obama nearly has the nomination on his side. McCain has little money left for the primary and wants Huck out ASAP. Ugh, I wish we voted here today. Vote for the future today...and who knows, the future could be now! =)
RIDE ON THE DOUBLE TALK EXPRESS LEADS TO WAR

John McCain is clearly focused on one thing and one thing only - WAR.  He lives for it, he loves it, he's obsessed by it, it is his entire identity.  He is a Post Traumatic Stress hot-headed and unstable lunatic who cares nothing about the will of the American people.  He is loyal to his backers and his backers make a killing off of war, war and more war.  It just so happens those are all of John McCain's personal interests as well.  He's no sell out.  He is a man of passion.  And if elected, he will deliver.

In his own words, "Friends, I want to give you some straight talk.  Friends, there are going to be more wars.  I'm sorry to tell you, but there are going to be more wars...".  Wow.  Interesting Foriegn Policy approach there, John.

After 2004 it became apparent to me what I had been trying to forget after the 2000 election, that much of America is just plain stupid.  It would be foolish to under-estimate their stpuidity this time around.  McCain, like Bush before him, can win.  We cannot let that happen.

Unfortunately Hilary Clinton represents the exact same special interests that McCain does.  They should run on the same ticket.

There is only one serious contender who is sane and that is Barack Obama.  If you measure who the best candidate is by body count, consider that over 1.1 million people have died as the result of the Iraqi invasion.  Consider also that Hilary and McCain pushed this forward every step of the way and remember that only Barack had the decency and good common sense to oppose this needless invasion from the very start, even when it was unpopular.

Someone who speaks in straight talk doesn't have to keep reminding you that it's straight talk.  They just speak the truth.  And that is why my vote is enthusiastically for Barack Obama this election season.

Only in America can someone so imminently unqualified as Huckabee be a serious prospect for President of the United States.  Go sheep!!!
Huckabee the future of the Republican party?  Only when the US becomes the US of Iran and the sixth article of the constitution becomes abolished.  I'll switch before then.
Dirk,
The reason you call Obama "empty" is because your head is probably empty of facts. You need to research ad compare McCain with Obama or Hillary. Otherwise, stop hining.
Do you Huckabee supporters really want a brokered convention? What happens if that scenario unfolds and Romney still has a lead over Huckabee?  Did you think about that?  Please do so, let's get everyone back in the race who has unreleased delegates and derail the Republicans efforts to win in November.

Or don't you all have enough foresight to see things through to their logical conclusion?

Blind leading the blind.
Hmmm...Haley Barbour, isn't he the one stealing money from the katrina housing funds to pay off his buddies in the casino business and didn't sonny perdue once claim that he took his direction from god not the georgia state constitution...with supporters like these scum mcbush will be certain to win...
As for the number of deaths of the war, Check the DOD records and you will find that there were more DOD deaths during the Clinton years than during the Bush years and we weren't even in a war. Think about Normandy and the 50,000 that died in one day. America has the ability do make a difference in the worls and with minimal deaths. Don't get me wrong, One of our Brave soldiers is to many. But let's put it into perspective!

"All this goes to show is that republicans are smarter than at least some democrats." Amy Andersen, Eden Prairie, MN

Amy, your comments are naive and do not reflect truthfulness in any way.  Why are more uneducated people democrats then?  Maybe because if democrats were smart enough to understand politics and this country they would be republicans!

McCain 08!

Let me put why I'm personally not voting for McCain, and why I'm not caring whether or not you do.  For me this is personal.  I'm in reality, in a lot of ways still a democrat.  But in my soul searching this year, I realized after having my baby Peanut, seeing the sonographs, I could never again compromise on the issue of life.  I can live with and deeply appreciate others taking the small steps to erode the legal opinions on the issues.  I just can't say that my vote supported stem-cells and putting aside the life amendment (which was even compromised itself).  And for me, I've given enough votes to those who harm babies, from the single and eight celled to the fully formed.  Period.  I didn't back away from a compromise (Democrats), to embrace another (McCain).  For me, it's like trying to explain to my wife that it's ok if I cheat on her with someone who looks just like her.
One American and Amy, good posts!!  We need to stop this Democratic in-fighting and just concentrate on putting a Democrat in office.  I am a registered Independent and have voted Republican, Democratic and Independent in past elections, but I just feel that only the Democrats have a chance of fixing this thing, and even then, it is not something I would ever want to be saddled with.
