Obama tangles with the press

Posted: Monday, March 03, 2008 5:58 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ’s Aswini Anburajan
SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- Led by the Chicago press corps that has covered Obama for years, the candidate today faced a barrage of questions in what turned out to be a contentious news conference.

Questions centered on why his campaign had denied that a meeting occurred between his chief economic advisor and Canadian officials as well as questions on his relationship with Tony Rezko, a Chicago land developer and fast food magnate, now on trial for corruption charges.

Obama claimed that when he had first denied the meeting between Austan Goolsbee and any members of the Canadian administration he provided "the information that [he] had at the time."

He added, "Nobody reached out to the Canadians to try to reassure them. They reached out, unbeknownst to the rest of us; They reached out to Mr. Goolsbee, who provided them with a tangible conversation and repeated what we've said on the campaign trail."

When did the meeting take place? Why did the Canadian officials reach out? Did Goolsbee not come forward right away and admit the meeting to Campaign Manager David Plouffe and Obama when both denied it last week? These are questions that went unanswered as the press conference was cut short.

Much of the back and forth, though, between reporters and Obama was about his relationship with Tony Rezko, with reporters demanding to know why new details were emerging from the case though Obama and his staff had claimed they had been forthright with all the details.

Obama and Carol Marin, political editor at NBC5 in Chicago and columnist at the Chicago Sun-Times, tangled over how up front Obama had been about Rezko. Obama cut off her line of questioning, saying that Marin's questions were personally motivated.

"Carol, can I just say I have to really dispute this,” Obama said. “It is true that you wanted an individual sit down, but I don't think that's fair to speak for the entire Chicago press corps because on this -- Let me finish," he interjected as she tried to interrupt.

“Before you were reporting on these issues I had an avail,” Obama said, pointing to members of the Chicago press corps who were present, “where I literally stood there and took every question people could think of."

Lynn Sweet from the Chicago Sun-Times then jumped in and told Obama that he may have answered questions for the Chicago press, but many other reporters hadn't had a chance to hear him on the issue.

"I just want to make that point an issue," Obama said. "You may still have questions, which I'm happy to answer, but I don't think it's fair to suggest somehow that we've been trying to hide the ball on this. There have been more attacks. There have been several hundred stories written on this issue. The fact of the matter remains unchallenged."

Obama went on to detail his relationship with Rezko, repeating that the land deal had been a "bone-headed" move.

"On the other hand, there have been no allegations that I betrayed the public trust,” he argued. “There have been no allegations that I did him any favors.”

A third reporter followed, asking Obama why information about fundraisers or other details had not been answered by the campaign. He raised the issue of how details were emerging in the case, like the fact that Obama and Rezko had toured the property that resulted in the questionable land deal between the two men.

Obama continued to say that reporters' interest was due to the fact this was "a hot story."

He claimed that his campaign would be happy to provide the details, but when asked why the campaign hadn't been forthcoming, he said, "What happens is these requests I think can go on forever, and, at some point, we've tried to respond to what's pertinent to the question that's been raised."

He added, "There's no question that he raised money for us, and there's no dispute that we've tried to get rid of that money."

Toward the end of the press conference, the question of Goolsbee's meeting was raised again. Obama answered curtly and then walked out after a staffer called last question. The press erupted with shouts, but Obama continued to walk out.

He paused only to say, "Come on guys; I answered like eight questions. We're running late.”

On the flight from San Antonio to Dallas, Obama, unsurprisingly, did not wander back to make small talk with the traveling press corps.

Clinton for President
Yet another example of how the press is so mean to Hillary and so nice to Obama...

(Sarcasm, in case you didn't get it)
Get used to it Obama, here comes the train.....
"You may still have questions, which I'm happy to answer," .....and when are you going to ANSWER them, Mr. Obama?  You deflect them when they come to you.  You dance around them.  You blame Hillary.  Again, WHEN are you going to answer them?  Americans are demanding truthful answers from you.
Hm...let's see how calm and composed Obama is after this "NORMAL" questioning by reporters. Oh well, it's too late now, why bother even asking him any questions.
Rezko's been beat to death, there are absolutely no accusations or proof of any wrongdoings.  Rezko didn't even help pay for the house... Rezko bought the tract next to it.  There are absolutely zero favors to Rezko that are tied to Obama.

On this whole Canada-NAFTA thing, the Canadian Embassy has rejected the initial report and is siding with the Obama campaign, saying there is absolutely zero evidence to believe Obama was speaking differently in private than in public.  The Canadian Parliament is currently trying to fire the person who started this whole absurd mess.

How about the media start reporting the facts and let the people decide, instead of reporting Howard Wolfson from the Clinton campaign's talking points?
Finally the honeymoon is over,Truth time now. cann't fool all the people all the time
Now it is all coming out. You dems still want to take a chance on this guy? Hillary has been vetted. Obama is a slick phony.
Convictions

Ultimately the Clintons were never charged, but 14 other persons were convicted of more than 40 crimes, including a sitting Governor who was removed from office.[33]

William J. Marks Sr.: Jim Guy Tucker business partner (conspiracy)
Stephen Smith (Whitewater): former Governor Clinton aide (conspiracy to misapply funds). Bill Clinton pardoned.
Webster Hubbell: Clinton political supporter; Rose Law Firm partner (embezzlement, fraud)

[edit]
Another Clinton hit job. Talk about lop-sided coverage! Get with it!
Tax returns

In March 1992, during his presidential campaign, the Clintons acknowledged that on their 1984 and 1985 tax returns, they had claimed improper tax deductions for interest payments made by the Whitewater Development Company and not them personally.[34] Due to the age of mistake, the Clintons were not obligated to make good the error, but Bill Clinton announced that they would.[34]
Deputy White House counsel Vince Foster looked into this matter, but did not take any action before his death.[34] Almost two years from the original announcement then passed before, on December 28, 1993, the Clintons did make this reimbursement payment, for $4,900, to the Internal Revenue Service. This was done just before Justice Department investigators started seeking the Clintons' Whitewater files. The payment was made without filing an amended return (possibly because the three-year period for amended return filing had passed), but did include full interest on the amount in error, including the additional two-year delay.[34] The Whitewater files in question, publicly released in August 1995, cast some doubt on the Clintons' assertions in the matter, as they showed that the couple were aware that the interest payments in question were by the Whitewater corporation and not them personally.[34]
Whitewater controversy
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
 (Redirected from Whitewater (controversy))
The Whitewater controversy (also called the Whitewater scandal, Whitewatergate, or often simply Whitewater) was an American political controversy that began with the real estate dealings of Bill and Hillary Clinton and their associates, Jim and Susan McDougal in the Whitewater Development Corporation, a failed business venture in the 1970s and 1980s.
David Hale, the source of criminal allegations against President Clinton in the Whitewater affair, claimed in November 1993 that Clinton, while governor of Arkansas, pressured him to provide an illegal $300,000 loan to Susan McDougal, the partner of the Clintons in the Whitewater land deal.[1] This allegation by Hale was questionable, as it contradicted his own testimony in the original FBI investigation of the failure of Madison Guaranty in 1989, where Hale did not mention Clinton in reference to this same loan. Hale also had a history of creating dummy companies, then looting federal funds, such as SBA loans, from them, and allowing them to fail. Only after coming under indictment in 1993 for charges in just such a scheme did Hale make allegations against Clinton.[2]
A New York Times article published during the 1992 U.S. presidential campaign reported that Clinton and his wife had invested in and lost money in the Whitewater development project.[3] A U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission investigation resulted in criminal charges against the two principals in the Whitewater project, but the Clintons themselves were never charged. Three separate inquiries found that there was insufficient evidence to charge the Clintons with criminal conduct in the land deal.[4]
The term Whitewater is also sometimes used to include other controversies from the Bill Clinton administration, especially those such as Travelgate, Filegate, and the circumstances surrounding Vince Foster's death, that were investigated by the Whitewater Independent Counsel.[5]
say hello to president mccain. we need a revolution, and the body public needs to stop buying into last-minute fear-mongering/scandal-raising. this isn't a popularity contest; this is about the future.
Isn't it a shame that the media waited until now to cover Obama's campaign like this?  Too bad the millions of voters who cast their votes before now were not exposed to a complete vetting of Obama. Hopefully, it won't be too late---Go Hillary!!!!!
Let the right wing conspiracies begin!! Hi Karl Rove, How are you? Licking my chops
guess i missed the rule that only hillary is allowed to be snippy with the press

we're also so acclimated to the clinton's that we simply cannot believe it when anyone else is upfront like obama
The press is trying to get tough on Obama but they don't know how to go about it cause he is such a good guy. lol Nice try press. Didn't work this time. Obama hit back with everything he has had :)
Well, I don't exspect this is the last we will hear from the corrupt, taking special interest money, defamation, clintonite: campaigning at its worst!

Who's the best?  Obama's the best.  Take a look you sad Clintonites and you'll see that Obama did more in 8 months then most senators do in a lifetime of service.  That's the kind of president I want working for me.

The following information gathered from the Library of Congress on the Legislative experience Junior Senator Hillary Clinton and Junior Senator Barack Obama. Please Feel free to check these records for yourself and draw your own conclusion.

Senator Clinton, who has served only one full term, which is 6 years and another year campaigning, has authored and passed 20 twenty pieces of legislation in her term of six years into law. These bills can be found at (wwwhomas.loc.gov).  Senator Clinton has passed.

(5) Name courthouse after James L. Watson.

(18) Assist landmine victims in other countries.
(19) Assist family caregivers in accessing affordable respite care.
(20) Designate part of the National Forest System in Puerto Rico as protected in the wilderness preservation system.

She has a nice list, but note that these are The Fact's straight from the Senate Record; Therefore, it is not made up.

Now, It is time to post Senator Obama's record from the Library of Congress.I have to mention that Senator Obama's list is too substantive, one is coalesced to categorize. Since its alot, remember you can go to the Library of Congress website, and check it out yourself, but I am just summarizing his first 8 months.

During Senator Obama's first 8 eight months of elected service he sponsored over 820 bills.

He introduced 233 bills regarding healthcare reform,
125 bills on poverty and public assistance,
112 bills on crime fighting,
97 economic bills,
60 human rights and anti-discrimination bills,
21 ethics reform bills,
15 gun control,
6 veterans affairs and many others.
In his first year in the U.S. Senate, he authored 152 bills and co-sponsored another 427. These included:
(1)the Coburn-Obama Government Transparency Act of 2006 that became LAW,
(2)The Lugar-Obama Nuclear Non-proliferation and Conventional Weapons Threat Reduction Act that became LAW, (3)The Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act that passed the Senate,
(4)The 2007 Government Ethics Bill that became LAW,
(5)The Protection Against Excessive Executive Compensation Bill that is in committee just to name a few.

In all since he entered the U.S. Senate, Senator Obama has written 890 bills and co-sponsored another 1096. An impressive record, for someone who supposedly has no legislative record.  Read the facts and not emotion.
I guess Hillary's manipulation of the media worked and they started acting irrationally with Obama.
This woman has to be defeated soon or she will create more trouble. If her campaign is so bad and divisive then what will her Presidency look like? People actually want to vote for this woman?
clink .. clink ...

the sound of Sen. Obama's teflon armor falling off .. clink.

And, Ron, TX .. is that whining I hear?
I love how terrified the so-called underdog to the entitlted one to the Dem nomination has all of these media folks losing their ever loving minds today and giving her pitbulls run of the circus. LOL
Rezco bought the property beside Obama's on the very same day, so he could later sell part to Obama, so Obama would have a bigger yard. This little deal was called a "mistake" by Obama, "after" the press found out about his friendship with Rezco. Rezco was at the time under supician for all k inds of stuff.

I would still like to know about OBama's friendship with the US terrorist William Ayers,  another issue Obama dances around and won't answer.
More evidence of the Clinton's slash-and-burn politics. When McCain wins the general, we'll all have Hillary to blame for the ensuing 4 years of mess.
I do not get it. What is the problem her?
I guess Hillary's manipulation of the media worked and they started acting irrationally with Obama.

Clinton donations from troubled firmPosted: Friday, February 29, 2008 5:47 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC's Lisa Myers and Jim Popkin
Sen. Hillary Clinton has declined to return $170,000 in campaign contributions from individuals at a company accused of widespread sexual harassment, and whose CEO is a disbarred lawyer with a criminal record, federal campaign records show.

The federal government has accused the Illinois management consulting firm, International Profit Associates, or IPA, of a brazen pattern of sexual harassment including "sexual assaults," "degrading anti-female language" and "obscene suggestions."

In a 2001 lawsuit full of lurid details, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission claims that 103 women employees at IPA were victimized for years. The civil case is ongoing, and IPA vigorously denies the allegations.

"This is by far, hands down, the worst case I've ever experienced," said Diane Smason, one of the EEOC lawyers handling the lawsuit. "Every woman there experienced sex harassment, they were part of a hostile work environment of sex harassment. And this occurred from the top down."

Sen. Clinton's spokesman, Howard Wolfson, told NBC News in a statement that the senator decided to keep the funds because the lawsuit is "ongoing" and because none of the sexual harassment allegations has been proven in court.

"With regard to the pending harassment suit, as a general matter, the campaign assesses findings of fact in deciding whether to return contributions," Wolfson said.

The media really needs to investigate what is going on in Canada. There is something rotten going on that is essentially meddling in the primaries. Is it coming from the new very conservative government or is it coming from political dirty tricks? This story is just too odd to be taken as anything else. Why did the Canadian representative call Obama's advisor in for a meeting?
And still nothing on those tax returns, White House Records, Presidential Library donor lists, the fact she didn't even read the National Intelligence Estimate before voting for the Iraq War, her taking donations from a company with 103 sexual harassment suits filed against it, her disgusting badgering of a 12 year old rape victim when she worked at the Rose law Firm, all the Clinton era scandals, the Hsu scandal, her own connections with Rezko. A pox on that anti-Hillary media, why are they paying so much attention to Obama? So not fair and misogynistic!
Lynn Sweet has been gunning for Obama from the get-go; there is nothing straight-up about her questioning. He wasn't going to allow himself to be trapped. He does need to make nice with the rest of the press though.

Rezko has been raked pretty thoroughly; there has been nothing special Obama has done for the guy that anyone can tell to date. Even Lynn Sweet admits that; she just wants to try him in the national media because he's not her chosen candidate. The case going before the courts today doesn't even involve Obama in the slightest. It is a guilty by association, which really, Clinton supporters, there are plenty of quesetionable relationships and shady funders in HRC's past to fill a holding cell. I don't know if any of them are guilty or not...or if she is, but I hate to hear that it is innocent until proven guilty for her and hanging Obama for Rezko off the bat.

As for Canada, it is pretty much one word over the other. Goolsbee has some anwsering to do internally; perhaps externally. Anyhow, it is no secret the right-wing has been interfering with the democratic primary lately. Idle hands are the devil's playground and they have nothing to do until the Dems are settled.
Maybe David Plouffe should release a memo asking why Hillary Clinton is not being grilled on Boratgate. The whole Rezko story is a non-story. There is no evidence that Obama did any favors for Rezko.

The media is favoring Hillary and McCain, not Obama.
Ron from TX,

You're wrong.  Nothing has actualy happened yet to really cause any of the details to come to light.

The trail will produce plenty of evidence that Rezko and Obama were both up to no good.

The jig is up Ron
I will say only this. I campaigned hard for Kerry. I thought I would campaign this time for whomever was the Dem nominee. I can truly say now if Billary is that nominee after all this crap she has perpetuated I will campaign my butt off for McCain. I cannot support her, she is a witch.
Senator Obama, the Media is now after you...Stay Focus....

We will all be praying a powerful prayer for you tonight....The Devil is never going to make it easy for you...And we all know this.... It has been all of our prayers and the need for change that has guided us this far...We can not and will not let it deter us now.
As per usual, the Clinton machine is overplaying its hand; remember South Carolina.  People really don't like smear campaigns. They detest lying.  This will backfire and the Clintons will crash and burn. This is like a Jimmy Stewart movie and Obama, played by Jimmy Stewart will triumph over the evil machine in the end.  I just don't understand how the team Hillary staff sleeps at night (oh yeah, that's when they come out of their coffins).
Obama '08
Once again it is evident to even the most limited in sight that the Hillary supporters don't care about the country, but only themselves and there own agenda.

Forget about facts lets just make sure this man doesn't become president!  Who cares whether he's good for change or the country.

Her husband closed our military bases and she never served in the military, but you think shes the best choice for Commander & Cheif?......What ever!
It's too bad that our reporter's aren't interested in the issues and reasonable concerns that involve the serious status of our economy, future world relationships and overall survival.  No, they want to waste their time and ours trying to dig up gossip and contrived rumors to amuse those who have no concept or focus of the horrific shape of our current U.S. status, as a result of inept leadership for the past seven years.  Grow up, people (reporters), give your intelligent audience significant news and leave the gossip for the tabloids.  Stop wasting your time, the candidate's time and the knowlegable public's time.
"Come on guys; I answered like eight questions.

Are you kidding me.  Awe poor baby, maybe next time they will take it easy on you and only ask you two questions.

Is this guy and his supporters for real.

About time people start asking Obama real questions....
Patty, Obama's up 160 delegates, in Vermont, and in Texas.  Sorry to burst your bubble.  Hillary has no way of winning the nomination, though she may rip the party up, and you may want to help her.  Thanks!
This line of questioning is nothing compared to what Bill and Hillary dealt with in the 90s and what we'll all have to deal with again if they get back into the White House. Let's end the Bush-Clinton dynasty.
Let me just say, by the way, that I am truly troubled by the caustic atmosphere between Clinton and Obama supporters.

So much for the greater good. This isn't a game; it is our future. Fact of the matter is that both candidates have major accomplishments under their belts, have excellent policy ideas (which, by the way, Obama had begun formulating before HRC released her platform, so enough with the copying crap), both have significant Senate accomplishments (unless you don't like non-proliferation, assisting injured vets getting the care they need, or transparency in government, Obama has indeed made progress since he has been there).

So this leaves me to believe that the Patty's of this blog is one of two things -- a Republican stoking the fire, or a person uncapable of seeing beyond their own opinions -- exactly what is wrong with this country's politics.
Senator Obama has not been accused of any wrongdoing in the deal to buy the house.

He has also donated all money Rezko donated to his campaign to charity.  Can Senator Clinton say the same about the $170,000 donated by the fine, upstanding individuals at International Profit Associates?
Nice Clinton setup... the media, as usual, follows the Clinton's bait like slobbering dogs.

"Toward the end of the press conference, the question of Goolsbee's meeting was raised again. Obama answered curtly and then walked out after a staffer called last question. The press erupted with shouts, but Obama continued to walk out."
*********
hmmmmmmm...The "great uniter" answers curtly and walks out. He has said he's going to rush into contacting our "enemies", that we need to solve problems with talk. This was just the press corps. What will he do when angry world leaders question him? And, then, on the plane, he avoided the usual small talk with the press. Pouting? Had the press been a little tougher on him all along, we might have seen some of these behaviors sooner. Perhaps, too, that's why he doesn't do audience questions? I know some won't agree with the following comment. However, he avoided directly engaging with Hilary in debates. But, then he makes curt "snipes" at her during stump speeches. Had they really "duked it out", the air might have been cleared. The debate behavior coupled with walking out on the press seems to indicate he is a conflict avoider. Avoiding conflict and being a peacemaker are two different things. I hear Obama supporters saying they don't want the "negativity". Questioning somebody's position isn't being negative. And, if you respond, then maybe you win over the other side. I'm not supporting Obama but I don't "hate" him. But, if he's going to be our President, these kinds of behaviors are very concerning.
What about the Clintons' tax records?  Who's vetted?  No one has accused Obama of wrongdoing here - but yet it's a focus of the campaign the night before min-super Tuesday.  WTF?
Scandal breaks out. Politician denies. Memo surfaces contradicting the politician.

Yes, this is the change we have been waiting for.
Senator Obama bought a house.  Senator Obama had someone he knew (who at the time was a "golden boy" in the Chicago rehab business and appeared above reproach) tour a house Senator Obama wanted to buy to tell him if the house was worth buying.  These are all facts I knew months ago -- and I am not a member of the press.  Mr. Rezko is now facing trial on corruption charges and there is ABSOLUTELY no connection to Senator Obama as numerous newspaper stories have detailed.  I have read many of these numerous newspaper stories, including the lengthy piece the Los Angeles Times published the week before February 5th, 2008.  Is the media spun much?  Apparently-- why else would they bring this garbage up when it is clear that someone in the Canadian government is trying to mess with OUR elections and this story has been written about so much it is laughable.

Shall we talk about dirt under the rug?  If we really had a serious conversation about dirt, we should be talking about Senator Clinton who has many more stories much worse than Mr. Rezko.  Why this now?  How about talking about the ongoing case in LA right now where Senator Clinton has been sued by Peter Paul?  I think Mr. Paul's case is probably frivolous, but trying to smear Mr. Obama with Mr. Rezko's problems because they knew each other is also frivolous.  This story has been written to death.

Why now?  Because apparently the Clinton campaign has been spinning the media up since last week, demanding they ask more questions about Mr. Rezko -- even though the questions have been asked, answered and written into the ground.  Enough of the politics of usual -- please do not be deceived America!

Kitchen sink anyone?
It is funny that Obama bought the house way below the FMV and Rezko wife just happened to buy the lot next door and then turned around and sold it to BO.  Also, the whole Canada thing, he lied and said no one on his campaign had any contact with Canada officials, convenient memory.  It is about time the press started dishing out a little to Obama, they certainly have enough tortured Hillary.  Go Hillary- we need you in the White House, Brenda, Surfside Beach, SC
This is a non-issue.  The only things this proves is that the press is even-handed with all candidates.  Hillary has simply had more questionable dealings on which the press can publish stories.

One more point, where are her tax papers.  What does Hillary have to hide?
Whatever.  I am back on the fence about Obama after 4 solid weeks of supporting him.  I think that a candidate decides to run a Mr. Smith Goes to Washington campaign, he or she has a higher standard to meet.  The issue--especially the staffer's meeting with Canadian officials--looks like poor judgment and obfuscation to me, especially Obama saying he didn't know about it.   I'm afraid this is the beginning of a downward turn for Obama's campaign and today's polls are reflecting that.
