Hillary calls Dem race civil and positive

Posted: Tuesday, March 04, 2008 12:12 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC/NJ's Athena Jones
HOUSTON -- As yet another round of crucial primaries in four states got underway Tuesday, Hillary Clinton said she was optimistic about the race and called this one of the most civil primary contests she could remember.

"I feel really good about today. We have a great campaign going on across Texas," she told reporters after greeting voters outside a polling site at a school here. "The voters of Texas are really focused on the two most important issues, national security and the economy, and I think there's going to be a tremendous turnout across Texas today. And I'm thrilled at what's happening in this campaign, what's happening in Ohio. It just feels really good,"

Clinton would not comment on whether she would compete in upcoming contests in Wyoming or Mississippi, saying instead she would focus on today. "This is a very close race and we're just taking it day by day. It's a long road to the nomination, and I feel good about where we are," she said, reminding reporters that her husband did not clench the party's nod until June. (Of course, her husband didn't begin his battle for the nomination nearly 12 months before the first contest like she did.)

When asked about the concerns of some Democrats that an increasingly negative race could damage the party's prospects in November, Clinton disagreed. "Maybe it's just because I've been involved in a lot of elections going back a long time. This is one of the most civil and positive campaigns that I can remember. There are contrasts, and it is imperative that those contrasts be drawn because voters in Democratic primaries have to decide who they think will be both the best president and the best nominee and you can't do that unless you put out your record and what the differences are," she said, before going on to reiterate her belief that the party would be unified and would win in the fall.

She would not comment on whether she should have begun drawing contrast with Obama earlier in the campaign.

Clinton said the Democratic race had reinvigorated the party in Texas. But she again raised questions about the caucus process, relevant today because Texas Democrats choose a third of the delegates in party conventions that take place later tonight. Clinton has long argued that caucuses are unrepresentative in part because of the strict time constraints placed on voters who want to take part in them. Today and at rallies here in the last few days, she has been sure to remind voters to take part in both the primary and the caucuses.

Over the weekend, Clinton backer and former HUD Secretary Henry Cisneros urged supporters to make sure to caucus to avoid a situation in which the senator wins the popular vote but loses the caucus.

(CNN) – As Hillary Clinton battles to keep her presidential bid alive, she may be getting help from an unlikely source: conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh.

Limbaugh has been actively urging his Texas listeners to cross over and vote for Clinton in that state's open primary Tuesday, arguing it helps the Republicans if the Democratic race remains unsettled for weeks to come.

"I want Hillary to stay in this…this is too good a soap opera," Limbaugh told fellow conservative talk-show host Laura Ingraham on Fox News Friday. He reiterated the comments on his Monday show and replayed the exchange with Ingram.

He also said Clinton is more willing than the Republican National Committee and John McCain's campaign to criticize Barack Obama.

"We need Barack Obama bloodied up politically. It's obvious that the Republicans are not going to do it, they don't have the stomach for it," Limbaugh continued. "As you probably know we're getting all kinds of memos from the RNC saying we're not going to be critical. Mark McKinnon of McCain's campaign said he'll quit if they get critical over Obama. This is the presidency of the United States we're talking about. I want our party to win I want the Democrats to lose.”

In January, liberal Daily Kos blogger Markos Moulitsas urged readers in Michigan to vote for Mitt Romney in the GOP primary for similar reasons. Romney went on to win Michigan, though exit polling showed Democrats who voted in that primary favored McCain.

On his Monday show, several listeners appeared dismayed that Limbaugh was urging them to support the New York senator.

"Wouldn't you love to cream Hillary though…why are you so afraid of her? Look at how ineptly she has campaigned against Obama," Limbaugh responded to one listener who said she wanted to see Clinton out of the race immediately.

A poll that MSNBC has shows that 25% of Hillary suporters will switch to McCain if this fool is the nominee.

Do you think Obama can win in November without Hillary's supporters?

I say no.
If Obama can't handle the heat then get out of the kitchen.
"That depends on what the definition is 'is' is"
Please be patient Senator Obama,"CHANGE" is comming today. Hillary will win today. : > )
It's amusing how she thinks this campaign is "civil", considering she was the first and only one to go negative. Obama has responded to her negative attacks, but did not initiate any. I think many voters, including myself was turn off by her. She never had my vote but I DID respect her!
First, she's insane.
Second, she's going to win 3 of 4 tonight.
Third, that's a good thing for the Democratic Party and for Barack Obama.

He has put himself into a what by ANY measure is a stunning position against a candidate who had the entire Democratic Establishment behind her and even today in Texas and Ohio has all the institutional advantages.

HOWEVER, he has to prove he can close the deal.  His advisors are weak compared to Clinton's attack dogs.  On This Week with George Stephanopolous 2 days ago, Howard Wolfson made David Axelrod look like a rookie.  The underlying message from Wolfson was utter nonsense and he still cleaned Axelrod's clock.   They have GOT to use some on the $150M+ to hire somebody who can go toe-to-toe with the nasty attack dogs.  None of us may like it, but that's American politics, folks.

Filling stadiums and winning 24 contests was enough to put Barack into an even position with Hillary.  We'll see after tomorrow if he has the killer instinct to make the changes in his message and to his team that he will HAVE to make in order to win the nomination.   This "the math is on our side" won't work.  Barack has noted it before but he better remember it now.   If you're the challenger against the undisputed heavyweight champion, YOU DO NOT win based on the judges cards.  You HAVE to knock out the champion.
Patty,sd,ca how old are you? I have seen many of your post and they are NEVER relevant to the article, which your comments should refect. You should really grow up, and stop acting so childish. Your name calling will not get Hillary into the White House. Did your parents teach you, from the Bible, you don't call people fools.
Civil? Civil? Clinton has done nothing but campaign negatively since Iowa.
You have got to be kidding.  What planet is she living on?  :)

ROTFL (Rolling on the Floor Laughing)!!
I had to compose myself before I could respond to this. Obama is positive and civil. Hillary's campaign, however, is another story - it is one of the most negative campaigns I have ever seen.

Here we have Hillary trying to use her "magic words" to change reality, who said Obama was the only one who is good with words? Hey Hillary, maybe if you SAY your campaign is positive, it will magically be so. ROTFL
Of course it's been a comparatively civil campaign because Obama hasn't used smearing the way Hillary does and is used to. Let's face it, she's had a solid 3 days of a love fest from the media who seem to be feeling guilty about something mean and spiteful they did. Everyone's piled on Obama, just to see if he can be weakened. Guess what? Yes, he can. Anyone can, especially the new face.
patty is a trolling idiot.
the reason 25% of hillary's supporters will vote for mccain is they don't mind hawkish warmongering. and they believe the lies hillary has been propagating.
also, its kind of a stupid question. its not a question of if they'd vote for mccain, but if they'd vote for the other nominee. while 10% of obama supporters will go to mccain, i bet a lot more will either sit at home, or vote for nader if hillary wins. plus, 10% of obama's supporters are republicans anyway. i don't think you can get anywhere near that on your side.
Sorry Hillary, just saying it -  don't make it so.  You are tearing this party apart a la George Bush and Karl Rove's division of this country.  You will run the government just as awefully and would likely turn the House and Senate back over to the GOP by the end of your first term!  You promised no dirty campaigning!  You promised.  You call it "drawing contrast," but you're yet to explain your experience (fighting for this fighting for that - we get it you're an experienced fighter; all of your fighting has netted you zero wins), what solution is it that you've offered - your historic attempt was as historic a failure (HC).  How can a voter know the differences between two candidates records when one candidate won't unseal them.  I, for one, demand proof of something you've done other than fight!

you won't release your White House schedule so we can see what you've done;
The Texas  Democratic Primary and  Caucus is  confusing at  the very best ?    It  is  an  open primary [ meaning  Republicans  can participate ] . I do not know if they can attend  the  Democratic Caucus ?  It  was certified by the Democratic National Committee . The double vote should be just as suspect as states voting for primaries on the date of their choice [  Michigan and Florida ] ?  In Texas , it is broken down by 2/3 Primary awarded delegates  and 1/3 Caucus awarded delegates . Wouldn't  Michigan and Florida have grounds to sue over being considered null  and void , as opposed to Texas ?
"This is one of the most civil and positive campaigns that I can remember."
--I have a hypothesis that the truth is generally the opposite of politician's statement.  If a politician feels the need to state that a campaign is civil and positive, it is probably because they know deep down inside that it isn't and hasn't been.

--Ahhh yes, Obama has been civil and positive to her ...all those new politics he brings to the table.  It was so nice of Sen. Clinton to finally notice.

[If Obama can't handle the heat then get out of the kitchen.
Patty,sd,ca]
--I truly get a kick out of the way Patty blatently disregards her candidate's statements.  Even Patty agrees that this is a heated contest.
This party is already divided, the cause being that you dems fall in love with your candidate.  You're so clouded by your adoration that you cannot even vote for another democrat!  I'm a center left indie, and looking from the outside in, you guys will not win in November if this continues.
Hey, will somebody call her on this utter nonsense of "my husband didn't win the nomination until June."

Newsbulletin:  it's a completely different primary schedule now.

That quote reminds me of sportscasters who say things like, "Team A team A all 10 of the games they played against team B between 1990 and 1999.  Therefore they're going to win today."
If Hillary wins Texas and Ohio, she'll claim momentum but she won't be able to claim the delegates. The superdelegates won't be swayed by "the big mo". They'll look at the situation objectively and start supporting Obama in greater numbers. They understand the problems a protracted nominating process brings. I voted for Obama but like Hillary just the same. And I can't understand why people would vote for McCain if their Democratic candidate lost. It seems like cutting off your nose to spite your face. Would people seriously rather have four more years of Republican rule simply in order to get back Obama? I doubt it. Emotions are high now, but there's a long time between now and November for things to simmer down.
This is Hillary Clintons THIRD elections - two for the Senate and this one (Is that MANY?). Well, that's maybe like her "35 years of experience".

A campaign of 'Fear and Smear' is 'civil' in Hillary world - that is because she is afraid of the blowback from the Obama supporters like our family.
We would not vote for her in November. Not just that, we would vote for a Republican President and a Republican Congress. I would do everything I can to oarganize here in my swing state against Hillary Clinton.

However, although I think she will get what she wants today, I am sure Obama will regroup and hit back.

I send another contribution to the Obama campaign today.
It's amusing how she thinks this campaign is "civil", considering she was the first and only one to go negative. Obama has responded to her negative attacks, but did not initiate any. I think many voters, including myself was turn off by her. She never had my vote but I DID respect her!

See the problem is that what some call "negative" others like miself call the truth.

If baby Obama can't handle the heat then get out of the kitchen.

Oh Barry we are not boneheads as are you, YOUR BEST friend REZKO BAD MAN!  You should be more experienced and wiser, you ARE JUDGED BY THE COMPANY YOU KEEP!!
BO has no credibility!
What a great day this is!  At 6:42 this morning, I proudly cast my vote for the first woman ever to run for President of the United States.  What an honor!  I am so proud to be an American.

This has been anything but civil and positive. I knew the Clintons would pull the same old negative, dirty politics again. And I'm getting tired of Morning Joe and Pat Buchanon giving Hillary free advice for weeks now. The way Chris Matthews manhandled that Obama representative from Texas turned my stomach. The MSNBC people think they are in charge of the Hillary campaign. Did they even mention that Hillary's reps met with Canadian officials and gave a wink and a nodd, too? Don't you think it's kind of funny that the Clinton's brought this memo to the media's attention on the day before the election? MCNBC sold out to the Clintons. Chris Matthews, Schuster, and Barnacle got in trouble because of the Clintons' powerful whining. They were bought by the Clintons--just like the rest of the Democratic party.
Chuck, you media folks need to be prepared to deal with the Clinton campaign's famous "spin." If you wins Texas and Ohio by small margins, her campaign will spin that she has come back. Yet she would not have made any significant dent into the total delegate count. We need you media folks to counteract the spin that might be coming. After all, Chuck, you have been crowned as the one person who understands the delegate math better than all others. Please challenge any attempt by the Clinton campaign to minimize the delegate count after Texas and Ohio primaries.
Do you think Obama can win in November without Hillary's supporters?

I say no.

AND so it will be! NEVER EVER VOTE BARRY!
Hillary Clinton said this was one of the most civil primary contests she could remember. What she meant was; Obama's been a gentleman up to now and I pooped all over him yesterday. He should have known that Clinton’s don’t fight fair. Clinton Lies=Divides America and Obama’s Hope=UNITES AMERICANS!
Should Obama drop out if he doesn't win OH & TX?

After all the money he has spent and still can't win both states shouldn't that tell him something?

Hillary 08
Patty from SD, CA 25% comprises "Hillary's supporters?" Break out the calculator, that's only 1/4.

Put the shoe on the other foot. Hillary has near 50% negative which indicates a great number of voters whill shun her (as they have in 11 straight states). Also, it's universally acknowledged that Obama has brought in a great number of new voters. They didn't join only to switch over to the Clintons.

Spin all you want, if the reality check doesn't hit tonight, it will hit tomorrow when Richardson and other heavies decide it's time to unite the party.

Cold hard delegate count, Patty. Clinton's only hope is to take this to the convention which the supers will not accept.
"Civil" to Hillary Clinton is a fight to the death steel cage match that rips the Democratic Party in two and risks alienating and entire generation of young people.

On the plus side, it might help her get elected.  So . . . I guess it's OK.
I have a friend who has access to exit polling data, and it's showing an Obama double-digit win in Texas, and a narrow victory in Ohio.  Of course, it's still early (Hillary voters may come out late or are waiting for a break in the dismal weather).  It also doesn't take into account the early voting (and it's been pretty widely reported that early voting in both states favored Obama).

I really don't care, since I'm a McCain supporter.  However, it's pretty interesting for sure.  Not good news for Clinton.
Rush and the rest of you idiots should just confess that the real issue you have with Obama is;
1. His Name
2. His Race
3. His ability to reach all people, except of course the racists'
Having the campaign send out a photo of Obama dressed in tribal garb? Saying he is not a muslim "as far as I know".  Throwing the kitchen sink at Obama.  This is civil?  I think it tells you more about how warped HRC has become that she can say this with a straight face.

To Patty - How many Obama supporters do you think are going to vote for Clinton if she makes a backroom deal to take the nomination when Sen. Obama has more pledged delegates?

Obama's camp has been gentle with Hillary Clinton compared to what she would face from Republicans.  He has gone after her on her record (Iraq vote, her previous Nafta position, etc.). Meanwhile she has gone after him with photos of him in African garb, smears that he's secretly Muslim, Rezko insinuations, etc.  It's really sad to see this getting so ugly.  I only hope that the superdelegates break one way soon before the Obama camp decides to go nuclear negative against the Clintons.
STAND BACK EVERYONE ! THE HILLARY EXPRESS IS MOVING AT "FULL SPEED" AHEAD AND SHE IS JUST GETTING WARMED UP. HISTORY IS BEING MADE AND HILLARY WILL BE THE FIRST WOMEN PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES. : > )
Scott is 100% right. Obama HAS to get tougher...all he has to do is hammer home the points he's already made. One press statement every 2 days isn't enough Obama's advisors are sitting on their hand WAY too much. That is the only reason Clinton is still lingering...she is using political tactics against him...but the GOP will do the same. This is lesson's learned for Obama....but to his credit and misfortune it has occurred late in the game. I know he is a quick learner though..he can't let Hillary dominate the airwaves like she has the past few weeks again.
Patty - 100% of the first-time voters, 40% of men, and 50% of Blacks will either stay home or vote for McCain if Hillary is the nominee.

Barak doesn't need Hillary voters since he is turning out a brand new electorate.  Explain to me how Hillary will not only lose the first-time voters, but men, independents, and Blacks with a 48% negative rating?
What is the big hurry, let it go to the bitter end, its more fun that way, maybe it will fall on Puerto Rico. That a good battle.
Go OBAMA
Civil and positive?  Of course this is the same woman who thinks she is in a "normal" marriage.
Patty, that may be what MSNBC is saying. But if The Clinton's Steal the nomination (because the math shows it's a wrap already)The democratic party is done. John McCain will be in the white house. The super delegates will start getting behind Senator Obama this week. She could win 3 out of 4 and only pick up 6 or 7 delegates. It's over!
She is so vindictive and dishonest that I don't think I could even stomach the thought of voting for her should she win the Democratic nomination.  Really hate to say it but with the way she has conducted herself these past two weeks, I'll vote for Nader before she gets my vote!

Some of the folks need to grow up. This is election season, so if you are not tough enough to handle the daily hits, then maybe you are not ready.
Clinton has complained and complained about media bias(somewhat valid) and Obama has looked pale when confronted with this dealings back in Chicago and the NAFTA flap. It's ok for both to be who they are, we want to see them in the true light.
The general election hasn't even begun, it will be an all out attack when the time comes, so best that all candidates get some practice now.
This is an election for the President of the US, the tougher the better.
Susan from Dayton, I repectfully remind you that Hillary Clinton is NOT the first woman to run for president of the United States.  Not that you should feel any less proud of your vote.  Just so you know, Victoria Woodhull (of the Equal Rights Party) ran for president in 1872.  Her running mate was famous black, male, abolitionist and former slave Frederick Douglass.  Again, I do not write this to disparage your vote or your pride in your vote.
I keep hearing a bunch of 21 year olds saying ZOMG!  Hilliary is being so negative! This will be my 5th Presidential election, and let me tell ya, they haven't seen negative yet.  Comparing records, questioning votes, getting into the details, pointing out the differences, even criticizing the way someone campaigns is not negative.  No one is out there saying that Obama is having an affair, or has illegitimate Muslim children, or any of the other 1,000s of dirty slurs that have happened through out the history of politics since the beginning of time.
I guess it depends on how you see "civil." I don't think too many of us ever expected to ever see again one Democrat using a re-make of red phone against another Democrat.

But other than that, and forwarding Manchurian Muslim e-mails, shopping negative spins on Obama's leadership PAC to Bob Novak, having surrogates bring up the possibility of cocaine dealing...

Sure, other than all that other stuff, I guess its been civil.
What a great day this is!  At 6:42 this morning, I proudly cast my vote for the first woman ever to run for President of the United States.  What an honor!  I am so proud to be an American.

Susan, Dayton, OH (Sent Tuesday, March 04, 2008 12:37 PM)

Being 'female' is your criteria for voting ?  Do you think the general election will share your sentiment ?

It'S HILLARY CLINTON you voted for ! Get that ?

You must fit in her presumed demographics, I tell you.

If she would ever make the nomination, our family would vote 'republican' for the first time (including congress).
Obama is nothing but a FAKE. The media gave him a free ride.
He has a "REZKO" problem
He has a "TERRORIST" problem
He has a "RELIGION" problem
He has a "MICHELLE, I AM ASHAMED OF AMERICA" problem.
He has a "DO NOTHING IN THE SENATE" problem.
He has a "WORDS DO MATTER" problem.
He has a "HONESTY & TRANSPARENCY" problem.
He has a "NAFTA" problem.
HE IS SLICK "OBAMA" PROBLEM

As Chris Rock has said (and I paraphrase), 'I am ready for a woman president but not this woman'.  Her campaign reminds me of the Bush/Rove techniques which I have found repulsive in the past. What's more, she voted for this war.  Her husband is criminal in his pursuit of power and money and their ethics give them little legitimacy for criticizing anyone.  If they screw up our chances for a new chapter in American politics, I will find myself in quite a blue funk.  Needless to say, I can never vote for her.  Everytime I hear her mendacious communication director, Howard Wolfson, speak, I become nauseated; the man might just as well rename himself Lee Atwater.

Politics doesn't have to be this way.  It's up to Obama to be strong enough to rise above all the crap that they've thrown against him.  The Canadian thing is a joke and any ethics concerns with Rezko just don't hold a candle to the things in which the Clintons have participated.

If they take this thing to Denver, I might have to travel to the convention to make my concerns known.  I invite all of you of like mind to join me in Denver, if the Clinton machine tries to steal this nomination.  It's time for a change and it's not about ideology, it's about process.  I love this country and I just don't want things to go on as they have in the past.  We have a real chance to make this quest for change become a reality.  It's time to let people like the Clintons know that they can't steam roll their way through the American public.

And to you woman out there who are voting for Hillary because of her gender, you should consider as to whether or not, this is the woman that you want.  Are the Clintons the team you want conducting politics as usual?  It would be a shame if something as superficial as gender would influence your vote.  BTW, I consider myself a feminist and welcome the day when I live in a country that will support a woman president.  Unfortunately, the Clintons are just not the right choice.
Obama '08
I am a Hillary supporter who will vote for McCain if Sen. Obama wins the nomination.  Sen. Obama is a great speaker but in reality he has never championed a policy or cause the makes me jump up and down.  We had 8 years of an inexperienced president and I don't want to deal with another 4 years of the same thing only more flashy.  Sen. McCain has shown in the past willing to work with Dems even if it went against his own party and that is worth a lot of points.
