McCain readies 'victory' party

Posted: Tuesday, March 04, 2008 5:26 PM by Domenico Montanaro

Per NBC/NJ's Adam Aigner-Treworgy
If there was any doubt the McCain campaign is planning on clinching the nomination tonight, the setup of their "victory" party confirmed their confidence. As the traveling press arrived at the Fairmont in Dallas to start setting up laptops and cameras, members of the event staff were raising nets of balloons onto the ceiling and fixing a giant "1191" banner to he side of the stage. Near the press risers are two large confetti cannons, the likes of which haven't been seen on the McCain campaign since Super Tuesday.

The ballroom is easily twice the size of the room that McCain's Super Tuesday party was held in, and on the plane ride to Dallas from Houston this afternoon McCain's senior advisor Charlie Black told reporters that he fully expects someone from the RNC to affirm tommorow that McCain indeed has passed the 1,191 delegate plateau.

The way Huckabee's holding on, you'd think his campaign would be doing the same. Of course, he's probably hanging nets and banners, he just couldn't afford any ballons or anything to write on the banner.

The longer he holds on, the further he gets from a VP nod.
Big John Hagee endorses Little John McCain

John Hagee, the Louis Farrakhahn of the far right

From Huff Post:

'...Catholic Media Figures Mum On McCain's Embrace Of Hagee

March 4, 2008 11:31 AM

During the Sunday Morning liveblog, it was noted that Tim Russert, dean of gotcha journalism, all but ignored one of the more controversial events of the week, anti-Catholic bigot John Hagee's endorsement of GOP frontrunner John McCain. It seemed to be a tailor-made moment for Russert, and the opportunity was well served up by McCain partisan Mike Murphy, but Russert whiffed. Media Matters recounts the blow-by-blow:

MURPHY: The McCain campaign's got to -- in my view, anyway, from the outside -- understand that the primary is over, they don't need to be campaigning with televangelists in San Antonio. They need to pivot to the general election in a way...with all due respect to the good reverend, and I will say as a Catholic boy who's spent a lot of time with John McCain, there is not an anti-Catholic atom in John McCain; he loves my people -- but pivot to the general election and take the fact that McCain is a different kind of Republican and run with it in a very bad environment where we need that kind of guy to win, or Democrat city. It'll set the conservative movement back 50 years.

RUSSERT: Let me show you another issue where there will be a difference between John McCain and either Obama or Clinton, and that's NAFTA, [panelist and Republican strategist] Mary Matalin. North America Free Trade Agreement.

Media Matters does a fine job parsing Russert's hypocrisy, noting that previously, he had "persisted with questions to Sen. Barack Obama about Louis Farrakhan's support of Obama, despite Obama's repeated denunciations of Farrakhan's statements." But what is perhaps more galling is that Russert is a Catholic himself -- proud John Carroll University alum and author of Big Russ And Me, which lovingly details the lessons learned from a Catholic upbringing. With this background, it's jarring that the Hagee endorsement didn't inspire any outrage in Russert or any fodder for discussion on Meet The Press.

Sadly, Russert is hardly alone in his inattention to the matter. NBC's Sunday morning lineup is dominated by media celebrities who strongly identify themselves as Catholic, and precisely none of them seemed capable of working up a scintilla of ire at the Hagee endorsement. Crooks and Liars' John Amato wondered where Holy Cross graduate Chris Matthews stood on the matter last Saturday. As of last night, he's still waiting. And rather than unleash the full contents of his fusty box of anger on McCain, John McLaughlin -- who was once an ordained Catholic priest -- seemed more intent on lowering the boom on what the Obama campaign may or may not have said to Canadian officials on NAFTA.

The unwillingness among these Catholic media figures to stand up for their fellows is nothing short of baffling. Sad, even -- so far, the loudest outcry on the matter has come from frothing Catholic League lunatic Bill Donohue. But it's easy to see how McCain, who once stood firm against "agents of intolerance," is going to skate by this election cycle seeking the warm embrace of bigots: too many agents of tolerance occupy the space where scrutiny is warranted...'

John McCain, will you 'reject and renounce' bigotry ?

Is hatred of Catholics acceptable to you ?
" ...members of the event staff were raising nets of balloons onto the ceiling and fixing a giant "1191" banner to he side of the stage."
--1191 delegates reached or the year Sen. J. McCain was born?
let's all go to the McCain victory party and get bombed!!
Once in a lifetime someone comes along and challenges the status quo through thoughtful intelligence.  Once in a lifetime someone comes along that speaks with such eloquence other are forced to listen. Once in a lifetime someone comes along who truly cares to empower the average American, instead of placate the privileged few. Once in a lifetime someone comes along that has the courage to challenge the special interest , a dangerous thing to do. Once in a lifetime someone comes along who lifts the spirit of all Americans!  The question is: are you really going to let this once in a lifetime opportunity to correct our bought and paid for governments (by special interest) pass you by?
Congrats, Grumpy.  Greetings to the other dwarfs.
I heard they're going to party like it's 1939
I was called by an individual stating that the polls close at 7:30. They did not say what camp they were callilng from, so I assume that either the Clinton campaign or the Republicans are trying to divert people from the real time. I am a member of Obama's site, have attended a couple of events.

I hear they are serving a smorgaswaterbord
Please stay in the race Hillary, we need to make sure you thoroughly destroy the Democratic party. Nothing will make the GOP happier than Hurricane Hillary tearing through the party state-by-state all the way into Colorado. Then, in one final hoorah, seal the tomb on the Democrats by finding a way to covince the super delegates to coronate your well 'earned' victory. I'm sure all of the bodies you leave in your wake will not keep you up at night - so you'll be well rested for that 3 am phone call.
I would seriously rethink the idea of putting cannons anywhere near him.  In his mind, it's totally plausible for Al Qaeda to be staying at the Fairmont in Dallas.  He gets easily confused and could think the confetti cannons were bombs.  Didn't you see how he couldn't figure out if he was a liberal or a conservative the other day?  All of this straight talk is making him so tired.  He just needs a nap my friends...
Sierra: Heh. The same Huff Post that desired that Nancy Reagan ''die slipping in a bathtub'', and other ''tolerant''nicities. Of course, this is the same Huffington Post that stood up for patent anti-Catholicism when it was two of their own[Edwards campaign staffers Amanda Marcotte and Melissa McEwan]who were doing the hatchetjob on the ''Popes fascists''.[Vintage Huffington, still available, shows them defending Marcotte and McEwan to the hilt]. Liberals have no room whatever to talk. Through ''Piss Christ'',''Dung Madonna'',''Corpus Christi'' ACT-UP/NYPD  boxing night in front of St.Patricks and other outrages, they stood either silent or approving as the know-nothingism of anti-Catholic bigotry was being piled on. Besides,if confronted,McCain will merely kick this guy to the curb,a la Farrakhan, and that, will be that. Obama has bigger worries anyway.See here:

John McCain's biggest problem will be to get people inspired enough in Nov. to go to the polls. He offers nothing new, will two step with his idol (Dubya), is stuck in a rut. Now he has to deal with the Hagee nut that hates Catholics, thinks God is responsible for Katrina! Just what John the Bomber needs, right Republicans? Remember, he is the BEST the GOP could come up with. How embarrassing for them.
I was surprised to find this poll in one in rhe newspapers, Hillary Clinton has been talking and rattling about answering the phone at 3:00 AM, maybe this info. calm her down, she won't have to answer the phone.

Quick Vote
Who would you prefer to have answer a White House crisis phone call at 3 a.m.?
Hillary Clinton       25%      99177
Mike Huckabee         6%       23658
John McCain           31%      125214
Barack Obama          38%      152461
Calling McCain the "comeback kid" is a reach.  I vote for "Comeback Codger"
Funny that McCain would do all this work when he can't even clinch the nomination tonight if he gets every single delegate.  Someone's been watching too many news networks who don't have the delegate count right.  He only has 874 pledged delegates.  Poor McCain is getting too old to do basic math anymore
IF OBAMA GETS THE DEMOCRATIC NOMINATION MOST OF HILLARY'S AND INDEPENDENTS VOTERS WILL VOTE REPUBLICAN AGAIN.
OBAMA CANNOT BE TRUSTED FOR PRESIDENT.
MCCAIN IS LAUGHING ALL WAY TO THE BANK.....
A victory party?  Maybe he will invite Hillary.
After she gave him a big bump for the White house, during the Democrat primary!  After her comment one would wonder if she is thinking McCain will be her VP if she wins the nomination!
She really showed her true colors as a democrat!  When she credited McCain and herself as being "experienced" and said all Obama did was give a speech!
Well...Obama didn't have a vote at the time.  BUT he read the intelligence reports.  And he stood up and spoke against against this war, and said WHY.  And everything he said came true!
Bill Cinton was on RUSH Limbaughs show today.
Hillary is giving McCain a big bump towards the White House on experience.  She is a traitor to the Democratic party!
I would NEVER vote for HER after what "the Clinton Machine" has done to their own party and all in the media!
Shame on you Hillary Clinton!!!  Switch over to being a Republican, b/c that's where you belong!!!
Fred, THANK YOU!!! At least one other person in this world is sane and can do the right math!!! 874 pledged delegates means that McCain CANNOT get enough delegates tonight no matter what! In fact, he will have to campaign until MAY to get enough!!!
I thought McCain was superstitious. Doesn't he know he shouldn't count his chickens before they've hatched??
Hurray for Huckabee's persistance in giving voters a choice.  Free elections no longer remain free when there is no choice of candidates. If only one choice is available why even bother to vote?

The answer to who picks up the phone at the white house is an after the fact problem.  The problem is: What are that person's policies?  Will they lead us into drastic situations where the phone even needs to be answered?  Are they already planning to increase the war in Iraq or start one somewhere else?

Forget about bombs and waterboarding.  Leave the past behind.  Get on over to the Obama victory party.  They'll have dancing there, for sure.
