Ohio Dems divided by race, age

Posted: Tuesday, March 04, 2008 10:54 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From MSNBC's Norah O'Donnell and Adam Verdugo
In Ohio, we are witnessing a transformation for Hillary Clinton, who appears to have won back her base. Democratic voters in Ohio are divided by race and age.

First, race: Among white voters, Clinton is winning women by a large margin -- 66% to Obama's 34%. She is also winning among white men, with 55% to Obama's 44%. Remember, Obama has won white men in past contests. Among black voters in Ohio, Obama is winning both men and women by a large margin, roughly 9-in-10. But black voters only make up 19% of the Democratic electorate in this state.

As for voters by age, Obama is getting two-thirds of young voters (ages 18-29), as well as the majority (54%) of those ages 30 to 44. Hillary Clinton is getting the over-45 group and taking an overwhelming number of the seniors (ages 65+ she gets 7-out-of-10). That is one of the largest margins for Clinton we have seen this entire primary season.

It's also interesting to note that in Ohio, 1-in-5 Democratic voters said race was an important factor in making their decision. In that group, 8-in-10 voted for Hillary Clinton.

Yes we can. Ohio is just a rasict little state. I know Ohio people and they are extremely racist. Obama can still win. :-)Ohio is just one state for Clinton. She doesn't have much more that want her.
Greg...
It's disappointing and depressing isn't it?!? I am from Ohio and I just had an unfortunate wake up call. Things really haven't changed all that much.
If Obama wins I plan to sit at home in November and not vote for him. I will also rally a lot of Latinos to join me or even convince them to vote McCain.
I hope when Hillary's president she doesn't have any grudges against Obama but gives him a full pardon for his conviction in the unraveling corruption investigations in Chicago. After all, Obama's made a lot of fools happy for a short time.
@Charles Roberts: actually the opposite is true. Most Obama fools say they will vote for Hillary; the others don't like Obama for obvious reasons and prefer the honest albeit right wing McCain. This is what the surveys say - it's no fantasy like you're concocting.
What I don't get is why so many losers WANT Obama to win. What is he going to give you? Change? Change from what? Change to what? You don't even know! You just scream at his speeches! Sorry but you're pathetic idiots.
How come Obama supporters saying if Hillary wins they won't vote for her and they'll vote for McCain that that's ok,but when the shoe is on the other foot we're all idiots if we don't vote for Obama if Hillary loses. Quite a double standard. If Hillary loses more than likely I will not vote for Obama but then again I won't cast a vote for John McCain either. But at least I know where John McCain is coming from.
@Susan:

"OHIO...I hope that the returns we are seeing merely reflect the small town..."

Yeah right. ;)

Why do we always go to the negative? The report states that 20% of Democrats said race is important – maybe it’s white people thinking it’s time we had a minority president!

Or, maybe it’s not all whites who think that race is important if the 1 in 5 making that statement are wanting ‘one of their own’ in office -- I didn’t read 1 in 5 ‘white’ Democrats, just 1 in 5 Democrats. It's probably not worth noting that the report also states that 19% of Democrats in Ohio are black. About 1 in 5, isn't that?
Charles - Being an "Independent" woman over 50, I will try to recall what I can about Hillary's experience in those 8 years...Hmm, 1st there was TravelGate, then there was "My husband did not sleep with her(Jennifer F)!",  then there was WhiteWater, then there was "My husband did not sleep with her(Paula whoever)!!", then there was an unsuccessful attempt to fix the health care system and finally there was "My husband did not have sex with her(Monica L)!!!"  I guess she's had a wealth of experience answering those 3a.m. crisis phone calls (every time a bimbo pops up or calls creates another crisis to which she blindly replies (repeat after me) "My husband did not...!").  If she should become the democratic nominee, read her lips "My _____ did not _____!"  At least Obama has credibility with me as I have read his books and reviewed the candidates senatorial voting records online at the U.S. Senate website.  Barack the Vote!
For John how dare you state that blacks have more opportunities than whites. What country are you living in. There is racism among white and you know it. Sorry but some white are still living in the pass and for that reason Obama will not be president in their eyes.
Kourian, you're living in fairy-tale land!  I am proudly "an Obama fool"!  I voted for Bill twice but I wouldn't vote for Shrillary no matter how much you paid me.  If she is the democratic nominee, I'll be sitting out the vote in November as will many of the other "Obama fools" that have the audacity of hope!  (white, female, 40+, independent, informed voter)
It's sad that Ohio just has not moved forward and wants to cling to their old racist ways. Hilary wants to win for Hilary, she wants political power, just like the old days, remember Watergate, there is still alot of dirt that could be thrown out there about her & Bill.  Where are her tax returns and also the paper work of her in the White House as First Lady. She does not have any experience. If that were true the candatites would be Joe Biden, or Senator Dobbs, they have more experience than Hilary.  Hilary is very PHONY.
I doubt blacks (I am white) are voting for Obama for the same reason as Hillary. They udnerstand history, and the "fairy tale" is a code for racists in the 1960's, if you will. I have read in which many blacks doubted Obama's candidacy and favored Hillary (all of my black male friends voted for Hillary in Iowa, though they know support Obama) until Bill's aggressive race biating become public.
But Ohio's whites are voting for Hillary by listening to her fear mongering and race biating, thus making themselves racists. Blacks don't even want to be accused in history of voting against a multiracial man. But there are also issues like the war and the economy that blacks feel Obama is best positioned to address.
Now, shut up accusing them of racism while overlooking our country's LONG, UGLY history.
For John how dare you state that blacks have more opportunities than whites. What country are you living in. There is racism among white and you know it. Sorry but some white are still living in the pass and for that reason Obama will not be president in their eyes.
I'am a woman of color and when this election started my mind was set on voting for Hillary Clinton because I just knew that she would be the person for the job but now through it all and hearing both sides of the debates and all that she and Obama stand for there is no way that I beleive Hillary can stand up to the test of running the united states.Come on people she is smart but we need more than smart to over come the strong holds of this world. My vote is for Obama not because he is black but because he is not only smart but he uses common sence, he feels the heart of the people, and he wants to make a change in the way politices in the white house have come against the poor working class people. I don't see why Ohio didn't see that, poor and ruggley as there state is.
Racism in Ohio, what else is new. Just look at the exit polls. Clinton played the race and fear card in Ohio, and (many) Ohioians gladly (and haplessly) took the bait. If your wondering why jobs left your state in droves, just look at your vote. Nuff said.
Here is something the press has not covered but was in the wall street journal. When the rapes, and chief.Bill Clinton was in the white house. The U.S was attacked every year the Clinton's were there and no one answered the phone. Here is a sample of there vast wealth of experience Bin Ladden was offered to the Clinton's Not once but 5 times while they were in the white house and said no.Just think if they said yes just onces 3,000 people would have gone on on 9/11.She sure does have experience doesn't she.
Hillary's base.  Poor, stupid, white people.  Go Ohio!!!!  Just ask the Gov of Ohio.  He'll tell you the same thing.
In 2004, we had a promising candidate in Howard Dean, who would have gotten us out of Iraq and turned this country around.  Instead, Democrats chose wimpy John Kerry, and got four more years of Bush and Iraq as a direct result.

In 2008, we have a real chance to move our country in a new direction with a different kind of politician, Barack Obama.  Instead, it appears we will put forth another cynical Washington panderer, this one worse than the other bad choices (Mondale, Dukakis, Kerry and now, Hillary Clinton).

Thanks to that shortsighted move, McCain is likely to take the White House. I'm not even sure I'd mind him over Hillary.  Although I hate everything McCain stands for, I trust him more than I do the kind of Democrat who would destroy another Democrat in her quest for power. McCain didn't imply Obama was a Muslim or instigate a smear campaign by sending a seemingly damning photo to Drudge.  Hillary's campaign did.  McCain didn't run a fake newscast accusing Obama of secret deals regarding NAFTA.  Hillary's campaign did.

Despite the wreck she's making of the one chance we've got to change direction, she'll probably bully and smear-campaign her way into the nomination.

I won't be voting for her though.  I wonder who she'll blame when this country goes completely to hell thanks to four more years of Republican rule.
just like the entire campaign has been divided by race, etc. with 9 out of 10 black voters racialy voting for Dumbama

Clinton '08
hey obama , you ain't gotta go home, but you gotta get the hell out of here!

Clinton '08
No, Ohio isn't the most racist state > Alabama and most southern states with our heavy black populations are the most racist states cause we/they voted striclty for obmaa because he was black - I live in Southside Birmingham, Albama where the population is 65% black to 30% white and watched the exit polls here on TV. America is still racial just as many black racists as white racists - dont cry now that the white vote took up for a white candidate when blacks have been doing it all along! Yall cant ahve your way all the time

Go Clinton!
Affirmative action is wrong and not fair to all races. If your race makes up 17% of the population then you should only make up that amount in the workplace, etc.

Blacks in the south are very racists towards whites - payback is hell isn't it but as long as yall dumbama supporters were getting their way they didn't cry but now that you lost tonight you start screaming Ohio and America is racist - u r exactly right just like the racists blacks in the south and the ones that vote 9 out of 10 for a black candidate!!!

Clinton '08

fight fire with fire!
How does Chuck Todd keep his job at MSNBC?
When are Matthews and Olbermann going to tell the network to get this embarassment off the air? They claim him as MSNBC political guru. Huh? Quit covering for this guy. He seldom gets it right and never has to justify or rectify.
It is sad to say but the same crybabies tongiht screaming racist ohio won't be when obama wins Mississippi in a huge black population turnout - the souht is full of blacks and 90% of them are voting for skin color - is that racist?

Thank you Ohio for not rolling over - and believing that Hillary is the best candidte to lead our country

The tide has turned i do think!

Clinton '08

media coverage is fair and balanced. cnn reports that white women with hispanic husbands that have one eye and one leg voted for hillary. msnbc reports that black veterans with limbs missing voted for mccain. abc reports that hispanic lesbians have all voted for obama. cbs reports that handicapped asians voted for ron paul. fox news reports that heterosexual evangelicals who enjoy squirrel meat during thanxgiving voted for huckabee.
Good luck Hillary. If you win the nomination this Dem is going to do everything in my power to make sure you NEVER become President.
WHO really cares who is in the white house they all tell lies and do nothing meaningful for the people of this counry , the rich get richer and the poor get poorer, they have sent all the jobs oversea ,have not upped the mininun wages to keep up with the cost of living and they all make promises that they dont keep .  gee,nc
In Ohio we are very racist! Against the bigger racists, black people. Thats a fact, we can't stand the fact that black people can be openly racist and other races cant! Thats why we are the way we are. BTW I'm hispanic.
Obama only got as far as he did thanks to Oprah! Without her and her folllowing he would have dropped out months ago.
