The Bush White House

Posted: Wednesday, March 05, 2008 9:03 AM by Mark Murray
Filed Under:

It's John McCain Day at the White House, NBC’s John Yang notes.

President Bush will welcome him and wife Cindy will at the North Portico -- the spot where foreign leaders arrive for State Dinners -- at noon in front of live television cameras. After lunch in the President's private dining room, Bush and the presumptive nominee will appear together in the Rose Garden for the official embrace--the President's endorsement.

VIDEO: NBC's David Gregory talks to MSNBC's Chris Matthews and Keith Olbermann about what Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., needs to do to benefit from President Bush's support.

The president has already said that McCain is a true conservative and pledged to campaign for him. White House political officials acknowledge that Bush's unpopularity with moderates and independents -- the swing voters McCain would need to win in November -- makes the embrace tricky. Better to do it early and get it over with. And Bush remains popular with the Republican base, so the president can help with party unity and raise money.

Will Bush apologize for what he did to McCain in South Carolina in 2000?
I realize Bush's administration went to war on faulty info and probably didn't care if the info was accurate becaues for so long Saddam Hussein defied the UN sanctions and the Un never did an ything aobut it yet France adn Russia continued to trade with them helping to kee p Iraq economically okay for years there. My question is, when was the UN going to act or were they?

And America policing the world has come back to haunt our reputation abroad but what policing does is keep your military well oiled and refined in newer types of warfare.

outside of the Iraq war and outside of the simple fact he isn't Einstein by any means, at least when giving speeches "you know" - lol >  but what else has he done that is pittiful?

I am a democrat that served my country and I don't necessarily hate Bush, although I do concede it is time to change but McCain is a liberal/moderte republican and he will vote for policies different thatn Bush's outside of the war.

Does anyone else thinkk like me? I think we need to be in the gulf adn make a graceful exit - look at the asian islands of the pacific where we are still there yet Democracy has flourished. It could have good effects 15 years down the road.
Eat Crow, MSNBC/Obama network!

"Bush Remain popular with the Republican base"  WILL someone explained that? Is that his "elites" the have and have mores. The organization that helped him "take" the election the last two times.  Are they also going to try and help McCain "take" the up coming election.  WHAT about the AMERICAN BASE, and its people. All 3 Hundred Million of us.  NO MORE BS.  WE are tried of being robbed, cheated and lied too.  SO the BASE can continued to raise Oil prices, Gas Prices, Health Care services,Food prices, lie, cheat, steal, etc all in the name of GREED.  MCCAIN can not win, not matter what kind of BASE he associate himself with.  IF things are done the AMERICAN WAY and the right way the next President will a Democrat without a doubt.

Obama's Hollow "Judgment" and Empty Record
Obama's gyrations on Iraq, Afghanistan and Iran are not the actions of one imbued with superior intuitive judgment, but rather the machinations of a political opportunist looking to avoid having his fingerprints on any issue that might be controversial, and require real judgment, while preserving his freedom to bludgeon his adversary for actually taking positions as elected office demands. It is hard to discern whether Senator Obama is a man of principle, but it is clear that he is not a man of substance. And that judgment, based on his hollow record, is inescapable.
I would want to get and be as far from Bush as possible. I have lost a lot of respect for the republicans. They only look after themselves. As all politicians do!
I don't know where to start with the obvious mental errors in the comments, but here goes:
1.  The President is an honorable man, with a great deal more intelligence than is acknowledged.  Just because he doesn't know how to "play" the cameras as well as his predecessor, doesn't mean he doesn't know how to deal with terrorism.  Make no mistake - this is a world war, and the other side hasn't surrendered yet.  The reputation of the USA has been ENHANCED, not damaged, by his presidency.  Take a look at Libya and think "Pan Am/Locherbie" and "Achille Lauro."  We need a partial return to the concept of "You can't do this to me, I'm an American!"  That was when the world knew if they abused US citizens, they just might have to look over their shoulder to make sure the Marines weren't on the way.
2.  SO WHAT if the "Haves" are now the "Have Mores!"  EVERYONE has more here.  The "poor" in our country live like kings compared to most of the rest of the world's middle class, and better than many of the .  You don't like how much more rich people here have than you?  Then go out, get educated (it's so close to free it may as well be), work hard, and be like your heroes, who've been telling you the deck is stacked against you, while being exactly what you claim you hate - success stories in the rags-to-riches category (Obama, Clinton, and Edwards are ALL self-made millionaires).
3.  Quit complaining about oil.  Go to a public meeting on a proposed nuclear power plant and tell everyone you think it's great.  Oppose windmills (ugly and kill birds).  Oppose "Global Warming" (greenhouse gases are called that because they're the very chemicals that plants pull from the air - oh, you don't remember photosynthesis?  I guess you weren't paying attention when they tried to teach to the test in No Child Left Behind). Get a job at a gas station.  A lot of them give financial assistance for students (see 2., above).
4.  Look at the candidates, and don't complain, vote.  Voting is NOT a right - it's a responsibility.  It's also something that non-citizens shouldn't be allowed to do.
5.  (see 4.)  Quit complaining about "second class" treatment for non-citizens.  Don't remember where "second class" came from?  It's from "second class citizen," which is what women and black people used to be, but aren't now.  That war was fought a hundred years ago.  It's time to get over it (this message is also for those who pine for a return to Jim Crow, so don't get any ideas about what I think about it).  We're pikers when it comes to racism and sexism.  Want bad race/gender relations?  Negotiate with the terrorist states and see where Sharia Law gets you.  Your daughters will be executed for learning to read.  You'll be imprisoned for having a satellite dish.
Okay, I'll climb off my Hyde Park soapbox for now.  Don't know what that means?  Guess you weren't paying attention during teach-to-the-test again.
Scott-Throughout history the greatest empires from Rome, Spain, Britain, Holland, Ottoman Turks, Japan and others eventually realized that you can easily bankrupt a country economically/morally by engaging in imperalist expansion of their so-called values and ideas on others. The U.S. IS NOW DOING THE EXACT MISTAKES. Using fear tactics thru patriotic  jingoism and us vs them mentality. The neo-cons are firm followers of Leo Strauss who believed that it was okay for leaders to lie to the public because their agenda was right period. Close to a decade ago the (PNAC)Panal for a New American Century started by you guess it Cheney, Wolforwitz, Rumsfeld and others in the Bush administration. Their aim is simply to control literally and/or thru corrupt "friends" Saudia Arabia ,Musharif and Isreal- The Middle east. I have nothing against protecting ourselves and our so-called interests as long as it based on TRUTH NOT LIES AS WELL AS COMPETENTLY. HISTORY CONTINUES TO REPEAT ITSELF.
Mr. Valerie Plame, You sir are a man of obvious poor Judgment.  Because you choose to write such non-sense with no validity what so ever.  Complete slander and bias opinions does not make you an expert in depicting who Barak Obama is.  What record do you seek?  What record do you hold that make you an expert in regards to having such an opinion about someone you evidently know nothing about.

Stop the non-sense, no one cares about what people like you have to say.  It's just a wast of time that someone has to come behind you to clean up your non-sense.

Barak Obama for President of the U.S.A.
Everybody is correct...
it doesnt matter who is president, someone has to do it and i dont you any of you stepping up to the plate...
"Bush remains Popular with the Repubican base"
His approval rating is 30%.......what does THAT tell you about the republican base? I peronally hope McWar has lunch, dinner AND brunch with Bush......makes it stronger for the Democrats come November.
I FOR ONE WISH MCCAIN TELL BUSH AND HIS CRONIES TO SHOVE IT. I THINK HE WOULD BE BETTER SERVED WINNING OVER THE MODERATES AND CROSSOVERS THAN GOING FOR THE GROUP THAT MOST AMERICA DEPISE. WE HAVE BEEN RAPED AND PILLAGED BY THEM ENOUGH. REMEMBER THE MORAL MAJORITY ARE NEITHER.
That's right, hang out with the most unpopular president in a generation, John Dubya!  It's about the only chance the dems'll have if they're stupid enough to nominate the completely unelectable Clinton.

Just like Al Gore right HP?

This election is one for the Democrate that I actually feel sorry for.  Look who is running for President.  I know that a woman could do a good job running this country, but not Hilary Clinton.  She can't manage her husband and his women that he runs with so how do you think she can fun this country.
As for Obama,  I am not sure if he has the experience.
Mr. Valerie Plame:

What?  More of the same empty accusations and labels.  Acknowledging he is a politician is like acknowledging the utter failures on this administration and the McCain/Clinton plan to continue a foreign policy of contradiction, arrogance, isolation and intimidation.  Subsequently allowing other other nations to cultivate global economic cooperation.  It is time to see that we are in the 21st Century and retire the cold war mindset that has our political leaders believing that grimacing and bullying is going to lead America into the future.  Look around, America's unwillingness to shift it nature and bring countries to the table has allowed Russia to make a comeback as a world player; as well as leading us into debt with the surging Chinese (Communist - poor human rights, etc.)

America has been low on integrity recently and I for one feel that it is due a leader who understands the world and can lead us back to world prominence.

Bush and McCain: More of the same.  Want war: Vote McCain and the Republicans.  It's their only issue.  100 more years and counting...
Like most Americans we are not sure who should be the President of this country. However the most important thing for all of us is to be safe.  If we are not safe then, the economy, health care or anything else will not matter. So at least, I would like to have someone in my corner that loves his country so much that he would give his life and take beating everyday as a POW to stand up for it.  In my book that should be the one with no questions asked to be elected as our next President of the United States. Has everyone forgotten how this country came together when 9/11 hit?  We were all devistated and worried, was that incident the only one and then another plane hit the Pennagon. I believe that most American's love this country and would do just what John McCain did for it. Do you think that Hilary Clinton would use her head to declare war if necessary or her heart?  How about Hussein Obama?  People you really do need to think this one through.

George (Sent Wednesday, March 05, 2008 10:07 AM)

Great posts, guys.
It amazes me that Obama has convinced fellow Democrats that he will build a multi-party consensus when his ideas are adverse to every fiber of a conservative's body. Not only that but his Senate voting record shows over 90% of his votes were along party lines.
Meanwhile, McCain actually reached across party lines (much to the chagrin of the Rep. hard-liners).
Pres. Bush ripped through his "first 100 days in office". Legislation after legislation was passed with dual party coorporation Tax Cuts, Energy, Education Reform.
Then came Iraq. Rumsfeld was the key. I supported Rumsfeld for awhile. His ideas made sense intellectually, but the "Old Guard" knew better from experience and the "Powell Doctrine" proved true. That's why the "Surge" is working.
I don't know why Dem's aren't more afraid of terrorism. Most of them live in highly urban areas which are high-value terror targets. I don't live in fear of what will happen next, but that's because I know Bush43 has his guys working hard on security. And I know McCain will, also.
Do you think that Hilary Clinton would use her head to declare war if necessary or her heart?  How about Hussein Obama?  People you really do need to think this one through.
Bush will look deeply into McCains eyes and see his soul and using his secret inner voice, that he thinks is God speaking to him, he will pronounce judgement on the man. Will McCain be the next Putin? Stay tuned.
Rush Linbaugh, Ann Coulter, Sean Hanity and bush. The three stoges and Schemp would be better supporters. With granpaw ready to get us in another "100 Years War" we really don't need another four year extension of bush administrative policy. The madness must stop!
Lunch will be a smorgaswaterbord.
"Yer doin' a heck of a job, Johnny."
What on Earth in Hillary's mind makes her think she can win.  She still is not ahead in the popular vote and experts say she won't be by convention time.  She still is way behind in pledged delegates (that represent the will of the people.) And she still is way behind in overall delegates.  She stupidly makes the argument "I am more electable because I have won the big states."  Guess what, Hillary, your running against another democrat.  Those states are going democrat--in the general election. In fact, Obama brings in far more independent and republican votes that Hillary does.

So, if Hillary won, tell me--what did she win??

The overall popular vote?  The pledged delegates??

What?  What Hillary didn't do last night was loose--everthing.

So how is "Winning Defined?"  I gues it is clear, that the will of the American people means nothing-- if Hillary is nominated after losing the popular vote and the pledged delegate count.

And don't think for a minute that the American people will allow the above scenerio to happen.
kyd70,SC, Will you live the rest of your days in fear.   That's not the issue here.  The republicans has been using fear to gain everything that benefit the few, the rich and the alike.  IF after all the effort that this administration claims it has spend to deal with terrorism has not worked.  THEN what esle should the American people do if the Current Government can't do anymore.  I will not live in fear, work hard and give my money to the "elites" the republican base, just because they continue to try and use a fear tactic to fuel their greed.  That day is long gone. If the Republican party couldn't do anything after all these years and the trillions of dollars spent to deal with the so called terrorist.  Then, frankly speaking it is time for someone esle to tried.  THe AMERICAN people need a break on their pockets.  Families are suffering, hard working AMERICANS are suffering and people like you are still scared and think it is all worth it.  GO to another country where you can feel safer if you must  I want to live in my courty,  that will takes care of it's people not continually scare it's people so that the few can get richer and richer.
Well George, here's my take, please accept my apologies for all caps but I need somehow to distinguish between your comments and mine;
1.  The President is an honorable man, with a great deal more intelligence than is acknowledged.  (I QUESTION HONORABLE, AGREE WITH MORE INTELLIGENT THAN ACKNOWLEDGED.  DOES IT MATTER WHEN HE HAS LITTLE INTELLECTUAL CURIOSITY, DELIBERATELY MAKES DECISIONS ON MINIMAL INFORMATION, AND REFUSES TO LEARN FROM HIS MISTAKES?)  ...Make no mistake - this is a world war, and the other side hasn't surrendered yet.  (WHERE IS ARE THE MILITARY BASES OF THE ENEMY?  SHALL WE BOMB THE CAPITAL OF TERRORISMSTAN?  CONVENTIONAL WARFARE HARMS OUR POSITION BY TURNING INNOCENT VICTIMS INTO MORE TERRORISTS.  EVEN DONALD RUMSFELD ACKNOWLEDGED THE POSSIBILITY OF THIS http://www.usatoday.com/news/washington/executive/rumsfeld-memo.htm )  The reputation of the USA has been ENHANCED, not damaged, by his presidency.  (REALLY? http://pewglobal.org/reports/display.php?ReportID=256 )
2.  SO WHAT if the "Haves" are now the "Have Mores!"  EVERYONE has more here.  (YOU'RE MISSING THE POINT.  THE "HAVES" DON'T JUST HAVE MORE, THEY HAVE A DISPROPORTIONATE SHARE MORE, AND ARE GAINING AT AN INCREASING RATE. http://www.demos.org/inequality/numbers.cfm  http://www.minutemanmedia.org/SKLAR%20011608.htm  THIS IS TAKING PLACE TO A DEGREE THAT IS PUTTING THE AMERICAN MIDDLE CLASS, THE ENGINE OF OUR PROSPERITY, IN JEOPARDY http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21309318/ )  You don't like how much more rich people here have than you?  Then go out, get educated (it's so close to free it may as well be), work hard, and be like your heroes, who've been telling you the deck is stacked against you, while being exactly what you claim you hate - success stories in the rags-to-riches category (Obama, Clinton, and Edwards are ALL self-made millionaires). (EVEN THAT IS NOW IN QUESTION http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/22764445/ )
3.  Quit complaining about oil.  (WHY WOULD I DO THAT WHEN A CLASSIC OLIGARCHY IS LINING THEIR OWN POCKETS WHILE PUTTING MY ECONOMIC SECURITY AT RISK?)
4.  Look at the candidates, and don't complain, vote.  Voting is NOT a right - it's a responsibility.  It's also something that non-citizens shouldn't be allowed to do. (DON'T WORRY, I WILL)
5.  (see 4.)  Quit complaining about "second class" treatment for non-citizens.  (IS IT OK FOR CONSERVATIVES TO USE XENOPHOBIA TO WHIP PEOPLE INTO A FRENZY FOR ELECTORAL GAIN?  THIS WASN'T AN ISSUE UNTIL REPUBLICANS MADE IT AN ISSUE)

Everyone now, sing it together:

McCain, McBush, McCheney, McRumsfeld equals McWar!  McCain, McBush, McCheney, McRumsfeld equals McWar!  McCain, McBush, McCheney, McRumsfeld equals McWar!  McCain, McBush, McCheney, McRumsfeld equals McWar!  McCain, McBush, McCheney, McRumsfeld equals McWar!  McCain, McBush, McCheney, McRumsfeld equals McWar!  McCain, McBush, McCheney, McRumsfeld equals McWar!  McCain, McBush, McCheney, McRumsfeld equals McWar!  McCain, McBush, McCheney, McRumsfeld equals McWar!  McCain, McBush, McCheney, McRumsfeld equals McWar!  McCain, McBush, McCheney, McRumsfeld equals McWar!
lb Atlanta, Ga: Did you vote for Kerry or Gore? You know, the guys who actually put their lives on the line to go to Vietnam while Bush patrolled the skies over Alabama? No? Then don't use the excuse that McCain was a prisoner of war for why we should vote for him.
T Hussein: And pulling out of NAFTA as one of the first things either of these Democrats do as president is supposed to restore ''world prominance''?
Actually, both Obama and Clinton are acting like Luddites, retreating from signed treaties, and angering other nations by hitting them with high tariffs in a bid to ''restore American jobs''. Yeah right. By engaging in exactly the same failures that caused these companies to move overseas to begin with,by caving to the unionist base of their party which has been the most injurious to keeping jobs here. The days of American products being sold to Americans is over. No more BETHLEHEM Steel. No more ZENITH televisions. No more Big Three automobile dominance. No more MA BELL. It is a global economy that demands cooperation on the one hand, and innovation on the other. Unions by neccecity retard innovation.[one need look no farther than France to see how ruinous to the people and ecomony powerful unions have been]. Their place in American society was to combat the exploitive practices of American companies that are now the most regulated on planet Earth. Having built these laurels, unions have too long rested upon them. The creation of shoddy products[equal in their way to anything made in a Shanghai warehouse]. injurious strikes and walkouts, the cutting away of not merely fat and muscle profits, but down to the bone, causing companies to close shop and thus laying off thousands of American workers.[Flynt Michigan, the home of STANLEY Tools, every single television manufacturing company in America, the death of US Steel, are just a few examples of corporations that lost vision, and were held in thrall by a consortium of unions and their paid politicians[Kennedy and Kerry singlehandedly destroyed STANLEY in America],costing Americans jobs and livlihoods.
Thus do Democrats exhibit a form of economic xenophobia. It had not occurred to them that non-union plants, located in America, turning out high-quality vehicles[to use one product instance],adopting technology and work practices as laid down by their Asian owners, are seeing workers in formerly depressed portions of the country, now employing thousands, with well paid positions, health benefits, child care, college scholarships,in effect, succeeding where the American Big Three automobile industry has failed.
The tragedy of all this is that these ''new visions''of Democrats are actually returns to failed policies, that will not lift the Rust Belt and other regions of the nation from their economic torpor.

Al Gore distanced himself from you know who when he ran for election in 2000, and it did him well, insofar as the popular vote was concerned [yeah yeah yeah, electoral college, blah blah blah].  But even in his post-impeachment days, Bill Clinton's approval ratings were much greater than the current outgoing president's approval ratings. So, yes, kiss of death for McCranky.

Hanging with George W Bush might provide red meat for the infamous "bush base"...but for the rest of us it means an extension of the current unbelivably awful Bush regime.  The Mc Cain/Bush administration doesn't have a chance come November 2008.
The handoff of the bushleague policies has begun.

don't let john mccain kid you, he intends to have a 3rd bush term on steroids.

he knows he only has 4 years to get us committed to wars people like Jerry and his kids won't go fight.
(deal with the so called terrorist.) so called? What do you mean so called?  These people want us dead.
There are at the very least more than 250,000,000 adults citizns of USA, among whom 40% are voting, which means that there are at least 60% who may care to follow either republicancan or democratic views if there is any, or at least some sort of policies, what is amazing that almost NONE who may compare such policies with that of the Democratic Republic Nation State vision of the USA's Founding Fathers,if the majority of the 250,000,000 adults americans cannot follow what I mean, then this may explain why their dear childrens are stuck in Iraq and Afganistan!!
Not like Al Gore at all Jerry.  Bill Clinton left office w/ over a 60% approval rating.  I don't think GWB's risen above freezing for 2 years now.
Just for the record, losing the popular vote didn't stop GWB from becoming president and you don't hear any republicans whining about that, do you?
There are at the very least more than 250,000,000 adults citizns of USA, among whom 40% are voting, which means that there are at least 60% who may care to follow either republicancan or democratic views "if there is any", or at least some sort of policies, what is amazing that almost NONE who may compare such policies with that of the Democratic Republic Nation State vision of the USA's Founding Fathers,if the majority of the 250,000,000 adults americans cannot follow what I mean, then this may explain why their dear childrens are stuck in Iraq and Afganistan!! I hope that at least Hilary Clinton will be mad at me because I said "if there is any"
Who cares what Bush thinks...he has done enough damage and Mc Cain will just follow suit.
Watching Bush endorse McCain around noon today:  McCain looks very uncomfortable and Bush is rambling as usual.  This will be the one and only photo-op for these two together on the same stage.  Very weird.
Maverick Turned "W" Bootlicker lost my respect a long time ago.  Enjoy the grub John or is it a grab.  Vote for Barack Obama, if you want the best shot at constructive change for America.
I want to start out by saying I'm republican for the most part, but do not,and did not like George Bush. I have been watching, reading and listening to everything about this election like most of you. I for the life of me can't understand how "Billary" is even allowed to run for the highest office in the country! The words Clinton and Scandal, are pretty much the same! Now if Hillary had divorced Bill ten years ago, maybe I could believe half of what she says! The whole Obama "movement" escapes me also.I am a lifelong resident of  Il. and am old enough to know that you don't get anywhere in politics in Chicago without owing someone, something! The Daily machine still holds the power. The freshman senator is if nothing else a great speaker, mostly if scripted. The biased media is now finally taking a closer look at Obama, and more will be revealed about him in the coming months. The thing that really gets me is his church.Out of all the churches in Chicago, why did he chose an all black church that endorses Farakhan, denounces whites and Jews alike? If the white candidates had an affiliation with the Aryan brotherhood for example, don't you think they would be villified in the press to say the least? Obama calls himself a "unifier", but to me, actions speak louder than words! The fact he doesn't acknowledge the flag of our country gives me pause for concern,as it should you all also. It makes me wonder what his agenda really is! The fact he is still in his first term and already making a bid for the White House without accomplishing much in the Senate is also a concern.A "present" vote is basically a safe move politically if nothing else. Our great country is in dire straights, and two Tax and Spend LIBERAL Democrats will only serve to bring our country down even more! People, make no mistake, John McCain is NOT George Bush! He is actually more moderate than conservative, and that is not necessarily a bad thing! He has the proven leadership, and has shown he can "cross the aisle"to get the job done.I truly believe that if he had been elected in 2000, the country wouldn't be in the mess we're in now! Vote for a PROVEN LEADER, vote McCain!

LB, Atlanta,  NO doubt that McCain was a prisoner. That's has nothing to do with the state of this Country and the taken advantage of by the Republican party and how they have taken advantage of what happened on 9-11 to steal and robbed the hard working American .  How long will people like you used 9-11 has an excuse for everything evil.  Get over it man. I served this country and so have millions of others. That's doesn't make us qualified to be President of the U.S.A. and neither does it for John McCain.  Stop the non-sense and grow up.
