Clinton camp fires back

Posted: Wednesday, March 05, 2008 1:26 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC's Mark Murray

Clinton campaign communications director Howard Wolfson released this statement on the Obama campaign's criticism of Clinton not releasing her tax returns.

His answer in short, it appears: Tony Rezko.

"Faced with many legitimate questions about Senator Obama's long-time relationship with indicted political fixer Tony Rezko, the Obama campaign has chosen to lash out at Senator Clinton. Here are the facts:

"Over 20 years of the Clintons' tax returns are in the public domain. Their tax returns since they left the White House will be made available on or around April 15. This information will be in addition to 15 years of uninterrupted public financial disclosure reports."

"Instead of making false attacks, we urge Senator Obama to release all relevant financial and other information related to indicted political fixer Tony Rezko."

Why do we have to wait until April 15 to see Hillarys tax returns when they are simply available now? Why is it that the press is presuading the American people by saying, "I think this" and "I think that"? The presses JOB is to give us information NOT their opinions. ALOT of Americans are persuaded by an anchorman's thoughts. That alone shows how easily influenced society is today. So naive. Shame on the press and shame on Hillary for fighting dirty to win a nomination. You (Hillary) have shown the less easily persuaded American that you are a dirty fighter. The slow response to Obama's religion knowing he is not a mulim, when asked the question was totally uncalled for and a very low blow. Very desperate in alot of people's eyes. Yet, alot of others were influenced by it. You obviously don't care about the democratic party if you are willing to degrade an oponant on the same side as you. If you're fightinga dirty debate with a man who is trying to help the democratic party, what kind of dirty political tactics will you use on we the American people, "if" you become President?

Let me also say that it wasnt the commercial that helped her win. Look how much critisism it got in the press. It was the "Saturday Night Live" skit. It showed the momentary human side of her. The 3am commercial, almost nobody liked. Not even people in her own campaign. All it recieved was negative feedback. Wake up people. Today for Hillary, Tomorrow for Obama.
The Clinton campaign accusing Obama of false attacks?

Hillary attacked Obama on the Canada NAFTA rumor which has since been debunked by the CBC as a purposeful smear campaign.  Clinton and McCain both used these *rumors* to attack Obama's credibility, rather than wait for the evidence.  Though there's no way to determine the amount of impact that this had on voting in Ohio and Texas, so let's just assume that it was significant, based on the amount of media coverage that played into the story.

Is this the kind of judgment she has?  She judges rumors to be true and uses them in her campaign's attacks on Obama?  That is exactly the kind of judgment that got us into Iraq in the first place.

Canada: CBC exonerates Obama. Apologizes.

McCain/Iseman '08: "I did not have proper relations with that woman"
Will Hillary also release her papers from the White House prior to April 15th or is she going to continue to hide behind her attacks on Obama and not discuss.
Hey Barack.  If you can't take the heat, get out of the kitchen.  This whining that you are doing is a clear example that YOU are not ready to be President of the United States of America.  As far as your "judgment", it is easy to give a speech in 2002 against the war in Iraq, but Senator Clinton is right.  Since becoming a member of the Senate, you have voted almost identically with her in votes regarding Iraq.  You also have a questionable record both in your State Senate and Federal Senate capacity of either not being present for the tough votes, or in some cases using excuses like you pushed the wrong button.  Give me a break.  When you did and do have the opportunity to show your leadership skills, for example with your leadership position in the Senate Committee that should be holding oversight meetings in regards to Afghanistan, guess what - you're ABSENT again. I am amazed that you would actually portray this as your "judgment" to make the right decisions for this great country.  What about your top economic advisor meeting with the Canadians to give them the old "wink - wink" in regards to NAFTA.  You then on multiple occcasions come out and tell the American people that NO MEETING TOOK PLACE.  And if you in any way think that the people cannot tell a land and house deal like the one you had with Rezko doesn't pass the "smell test", think again.  You didn't even have the JUDGMENT to care that Rezko was already under investigation for corruption - not very intelligent - when you made the deal with him. So much for your leadership skills. Please don't tell me that you are any different from most other politicians.  You clearly have made all decisions in your career with the ultimate goal of running for this presidency.  Well, guess what?  The media, due to the cries from the American people, are starting to peel back the layers of Barack Obama.  Maybe now we can find out who you really are, rather than listen to your poetic speeches.

Go Hillary!!!!!!!A true leader - someone who has solutions and has rolled up her sleaves and shown she is a winner.
The Clinton campaign needs to release the tax returns, the White House records, and the Clinton Foundation donor lists. The press has been reluctant to request this information, but the Republican Party will demand this information on a daily basis in the general election. For the good of the party, this information must be made public immediately.
The tax returns in question are LAST YEARS not this years. They have been prepared and filed. How hard is it to open a filing cabinet, take them out, copy them and send them out?

As for Resko, the aforementioned link should answer just about anyone's questions. Nobody is asking for anything beyond Hillary's tax returns so I don't see where Obama needs to submit anything additional regarding a legal real-estate transaction. A private business transaction is just that-private. By extending Wolfson's logic, Obama should demand to see Bills records regarding his deals in the Middle-East and Kazakistan.

Personally, I am still wondering if there is a connection between the Canadian businessman behind the Kazak deal and the "leaked" NAFTA memo.
Obama campaign calls for tit for tat.
Clinton campaign answers with a rat a tat tat.
Hillary haters take heart you may have four years to build your vitriolic hatred, Rush Limbaugh needs you in his army, he has been losing face time lately and needs your support.
The tax returns will come out and nothing will come of it, Rezco trial starts and Senator Obama will be explaining away his prior false statements about their friendship.
All the information about the Clintons is old news, What hides in Baraks closet will be all new all the time. What do you think the media will hang onto, old stories or new stories?
Tax returns are being made ready for public consumption....

What about the generals and admirals she brags about giving her Nat'l Sec cachet? Many were appointed by her husband. One Sec Navy that Pres Clinton appointed was only in the Navy 5 years - as a supply officer(Lt)
After that it was onto banking/investments/mortgages etc in Ark and Texas - when he stumbled into the Clintons.  5 years of counting pinto beans made him okey dokey to be Sec of the Navy...feeling safer knowing she has the backing of some very retired military sycophants?

Ireland - has anyone checked out what she did there to directly negotiate in and have an impact on the peace accords?  She lunched.  She got a teapot.  She made innocuous speeches.  She lied about her role in Ireland.
Howard Wolfson obviously believes that the best defense is a good offense.  Tony Rezko will prove to be small potatoes compared to Norman Hsu and Peter Paul.  It is staggering how hypocritical Clinton supporters are.  They see fit to criticize Obama's ethics, when Bill and Hillary Clinton have already proven themselves to be two of the most corrupt politicians in history.  If Obama is elected, I am sure of this.  When his term ends, he will not steal everything that isn't nailed down, the way the Clintons did.
Hilary definitely has 35 years of experience - unfortunately it's experience dodging accusations like Whitewater, contributions from Chinese lobbiests and convicted criminals, pardons of convicted criminals and the myriad of unethical behavior each of them have exhibited over the years.

Now it's her tax returns (which will show just how extensively they're in the pockets of foreign nationals), documents pertaining to her 'years of political experience' as first lady and her campaign's ongoing smear campaign against Obama.

I just find it interesting that you Hillary supporters don't question why she won't reveal her tax returns or white house papers - or that you're so willing to accept the disgusting smear campaign she's so happy to be a part of.

Are you so enamored with having a woman in the Presidency that you're willing to look the other way ethically? I know Clinton supporters have 8 years of experience looking the other way when it comes to the Clintons...what are a few more years of suspended ethics?
Hey, Howard, can't you take it? This is nothing compared to what the Republicans will do, you know? We want you to reject and denounce the policy of withholding financial disclosure immediately, and while you're at it, send us your tax returns too, ok, Howard?
She deserves to be thrown under the bus.  I'm sure the 'media friendly' Obama camp can have a few headlines put out that will not reflect on Mrs. Clinton.  He really hasn't had a need to do so to this point.  Bill did a good enough job sticking his foot in his mouth.  To the Hillary contingent please don't be disrespectful to AA's that will play a privitol role in the general.  YOU WILL NEED OUR VOTE.  Ohio is one state but the demographics are not the same in every state.  There will be states that AA turn out will be critical.  But you know this already.

Tell it Lucinda! Let's have some coverage on the Tax Returns that have yet to see the light of day. Then we can move that in-depth journalism machine onto Sen. Clinton's lawsuit which is going to trial this year that deals with the 1.2 Million fraud scandal she's involved in yet her press minnons overlook to harp on non-evidence of any wrongdoing where Sen. Obama is concerned with Tony Rezco whom also "knows" the Clintons as well. Any takers unbiased media?
Congratulations to Hillary for giving the party a clear choice: either coronate her as the nominee or face total destruction.
Now she's talking about offering the VP to Obama. He'd be crazy to accept it given the fact that Bill would have at least four more years with unrestricted access to all Whitehouse bathrooms. Cirque de Clintstone didn't do Al Gore any favors.
No. Hillary is going to have to hand the Congress and the Whitehouse back to the GOP on her own thank you.
What about the Clintons' dealings that lead to the suicide of one of their associates.  A few years has not
erased the horrible memories of the Clinton Scandals in the White House for those of us old enough not to be bamboozled.  And when this is revealed, this will make
Obama's non-issues irrelevent.  Obama voters: NEVER form an alliance with Clinton, especially while you are ahead. This is like a kid trying to trick another
kid out of his candy.
Democrats have a stark choice: will we reward the politics of "fear and smear," or will we reward an effort to improve the quality of our politics.  Hillary has skillfully played the victim and the bully simultaneously.  The problem is that by playing "fear and smear," Clinton validates the Republicans use of the very same tactics.

I find it enormously hypocritical that many HRC supporters, who rightfully complain about the Republicans unfair smears of the Clintons, Gore and Kerry, not only are willing to accept, but actually enthusiastically embrace the same type of conduct by their candidate.  Ultimately our party loses and our country looses, as more people give up on the political process and stay home.  Obama is trying to show us a new way.  We can be strong without being dirty.  We can beat the Republican slime machine by bringing millions of new voters to the polls.

The choice is ours, will we move forward with commitment to solving our problems, or will we retreat into the crouching stance of hyper-partisanship and hurl mud at each other?
I don't believe Sen Clinton's claims of foreign policy experience as first lady. What proof does she have? Why would a first lady be involved in our country's foreign policy?  Was the Clinton White House really that poorly run that they didn't have enough foreign policy expertise?
It is not a false attack. Bill Clinton seems to have a lot of business dealings in the middle east these days. Which countries ? Which companies ? That is why her latest tax returns are required. If there was nothing to hide, she would release the returns.

Obama has not been accsued of any wrong doing in the Rezko case. He is not on any witness list for this trial . Plus he returned the money associated with Rezko fundraising. Hillary on the other hand, says that the fundraising 170,000, she received from a company where many of the employees are currently under investigation for sexual harassment. Her reason is it is ONLY a trial, nobody is guilty yet .

If everyone in government was called to task to explain everytime they KNEW someone who was corrupt, Congress and the white house would be empty in 5 minutes.
We getnothing but endless speculation, days of stupid map counting and hypotheticals and the same ignorant questions and answers - every 15 minutes. On every single station.  Why the need to regurgitate the same pap over and over?  An endless loop of junk cycling around until some new thing pops up.  Why not fill in the spare time between primaries and mass murders by providing some in depth investigative reporting?
LET'S NOT FORGET THAT THE CLINTON'S STOLE MANY, MANY THINGS FROM THE WHITE HOUSE WHEN THEY LEFT AFTER BILL. CAN YOU ONLY IMAGINE WHAT THEY WILL "LIFT" WHEN THEY LEAVE AFTER HILLARY...SEEING AS THIS IS THEIR LAST CHANCE AT THE WHITE HOUSE.  OR THERE IS ALWAYS CHELSEA.  AFTER SEEING WHAT IS GOING ON THIS PRIMARY IT APPEARS SHE WOULD BE A SHOE IN...SEEING AS THERE ARE SO MANY BLIND PEOPLE IN OUR COUNTRY. WAKE UP...DON'T YOU SEE WHAT THEY ARE??
Clinton IS PLANNING to try to steal this election - everything she is arguing at this point is an attempt to justify it.

Obama is ahead in the popular vote, and in the pledged deligates EVEN WITH FLORIDA. She will have a virtually impossible task catching him - so she HAS to be counting on strong-arming the Super Deligates...in the mean time she is going to spend the next few months doing the Republicans' job for them. Nice. If she can't win the nomination, she is determined to take the party down with her. ...oh, and by the way - if she does succeed in stealing the nomination the way George W. Bush stole the Presidency - She won't win. I'll vote for her, but she will NOT win.
I hope that Hilary Clinton wins, so that all you people who supporters who say what's the big deal about the tax returns will be eating crow.  Because guess what, if there was nothing suspicious on those tax forms, then they would have released them by now.  I hope, no I can't wait until Hilary clinton is nominated, cause when they do release those tax forms, and the S*&^ hits the fan.  I'm gonna just laugh as they swear in President McCain.
I don't see what the big deal is about tax returns, especially considering they file finance statements every year because she is a senator.  So, their tax records have been available for 1991 through 1999 or 2000 because Bill was president.  And after that Hillary has had to file finance statements because she was Senator.

The Clinton finances have been out there for more than a decade, so why is everyone freaking out and pushing for her to get her taxes out before they are even due into the IRS?
Go HIllary
Go Hillary
You Obamacans are a joke
Would you like my taxes too?
Just because grown ups and Democrats ONLY voted in Ohio,Rhode Island, and Texas...The true Democrat won..
THANK GOD FOR Ohio,Rhode Island, and Texas
We're all MAD here in Wonderland.  The Demos tear each other apart with dirty tricks to win and call it progress; the Repubs elect the village idiot...twice...and call it good statesmanship.
We're all MAD here...
Grow up.  We are actually having some enthusiasm that brings people to the polls.  The elbow bashing by Obama and Clinton is normal, even soft election politics.  You need to "trust" these career politicians to do their job, not be your buddy--you don't know them and likely never will.  We votes require all this "promising" and rhetoric.  If you can't process an informed vote without a personal pat on the head from some stranger, just stay home from the polls.
I am so sick of the Clinton's and their throw the rock and hide their hand tactics!  They are proving Obama's point!! Politics as usual.
Start the negative attacks for Pennsylvania so Obama has to spend all his time defending instead of presnting his plans...

I still can't believe how the media (people like Joe this morning) are representing yesterday's results as a HUGE win for Hillary?!?  She netted between 6 and 10 delegates - THAT'S ALL!!  If those primaries were held 3 weeks ago, she would have netted 40 delegates.  Obama closed the gap from 40 to 6 - that is momemtum!!  As soon as people get to see him and hear his plans, they decide he's the guy!  Watch Pennsylvania's lead shrink over the next few weeks - although there were still people in Penns who believe that Obama doesn't know the Pledge of Allegiance and believe he is a Muslim (60 Minutes) - unbelievable!!
The tax returns will disclose all kinds of ties to special interests and large payments to Bill for arranging inside deals. They are hiding something... otherwise they would have released them.
The Press should be doing its job !!!  We can't rely on the candidates to expose themselves ... that's the job of the Media ... and they are failing miserably.  Is there any way to start a movement/petition/surge to insist that they get started NOW ?  They have delayed long enough.  We are supposed to have a free and fair press ... where are the investigative reporters??  We don't need more "spin" and "opinions" ... we need reporting that can be counted on to be "honest" and "impartial" !!  Does anyone have an answer??
