Clinton camp urges Obama to be positive

Posted: Thursday, March 06, 2008 12:55 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC/NJ's Athena Jones
In what may be a sign of an increasingly negative campaign, the Clinton camp held a conference call Thursday to criticize Obama for attacking the New York senator -- using what they called "Republican talking points" and to challenge him to address the issues they've raised about his readiness to handle national security and economic issues.

Communications Director Howard Wolfson accused Obama of "imitating Ken Starr" in his attacks on Hillary, and senior adviser Ann Lewis began the call with a statement that raised questions about Obama's claim he would offer a new kind of politics.

"One day after losing elections in Ohio and Texas, where the debate centered on issues of the economy and national security, the Obama campaign has apparently decided that instead of addressing these issues, they're going to focus on attacking Hillary Clinton. I did not realize that their version of new politics is to recycle some of the same old Republican attacks on Hillary that have failed for years. This new strategy, I've gotta say, suggests a campaign that is unable to make the positive case," she said.

Lewis asked why Obama would not address his failure to hold hearings as chair of a Senate subcommittee on European affairs and to offer solutions on the economy, both issues the Obama campaign has addressed through statements and policy papers.

She said Clinton's rival had been using negative mailers against Hillary on health care and NAFTA for weeks and called his criticisms on trade agreement misleading and "particularly ironic given what we now know" about his economic adviser meeting with Canadian representatives.

In response to this conference call, Obama spokesman Bill Burton replied with this statement: “It is absurd that after weeks of badgering the media to ‘vet’ Senator Obama, the Clinton campaign believes that they should be held to an entirely different standard.  We don’t believe that expecting candidates for the presidency to disclose their tax returns somehow constitutes Ken Starr-tactics... And if Senator Clinton doesn’t think that the Republicans will ask these very same questions, then she’s not as ready to go toe-to-toe with John McCain as she claims.”

On the call, the Clinton campaign also announced having raised $3 million online in the 24 hours following Tuesday's wins, and Wolfson took a stab at predicting which states the New York senator would perform well in in the upcoming contests.

"I think Kentucky, West Virginia, Indiana, Pennsylvania and Puerto Rico are all states where we believe we have a chance to do well in. And then, I think, we've all heard and read about the increasing possibility that there may be some additional activity in Florida and Michigan. And, of course, given the results of the primaries that occurred there, we would feel good about our prospects in those states," he said.

When pressed for more comment on Florida and Michigan, Wolfson restated the campaign's position that voters in those states had spoken and their delegations should be seated and said they were following the conversations about re-doing votes in those states "with interest." He would not comment on the possibility that Michigan could hold a caucus.

The aides were challenged about the fairness of their raising questions about Obama and arguing that he was recycling Republican talking points and Lewis responded that Obama had focused on personal attacks.

Alan in NJ,
This is a take some of your own medicine moment.  Just because he's running a different campaign does not mean he'll stand by and let the bully hit him in the back of the head repeatedly and take his lunch money.  I'm sure at some point soon, Hillary will play the "poor me, you're picking on a girl" card.  Just watch.
I was really enjoying the Demoncratic Primary process until it became negative.  Now I don't even want to hear about it.  This isn't how the Democrats should campaign.  It is a Republican tactic and it saddens me that Democrats are imitating them.
The most unfortunate thing is that the American Public responds so positively to it.  What a sick nation we have.
Obama lets Hillary answer the questions, of course he totally agrees with her, then he makes Hillary's answers look as his without saying anything at all, then the next day she twists her statement and disagrees. Obviously someone elses writes this disagreements because in person he can't have enough brains to answer on his own. During his speech in San Antonio after the primary he said that some woman told him that her mortgage had doubled in 24 hours, c'mon this seems to be an impossibility, unless she is paying her mortgage daily.  Well his believing this reinforces my belief that he is clueless on the mortgage crisis subject along with most of the issues he wants us to believe he is going to change.
Change is necessary but not all change is good.  I am very afraid he will be totally detrimental to our country and to the Democratic party as well.
I agree with you all. Remember the debate before South Carolina? He was tough and he wins and afterwards it comes along. I don't think we, Obama supporters, will feel disoriented when he gets tougher; please Obama show to the rest of the country that you are a strong leader. I hope you will highlight the NYTimes article on the lack of Hillary's experience in the national security meetings in White House. Bill's relationships with the bad guys, etc.

Go Obama, don't hesitate as they didn't hesitate wherever they could destroy you. You don't need to prove your hope-full side, we are all convinced, show your strong face, tough, leader, and fighter side.

Go Obama

It doesn't matter if Obama took his name off or not. The DNC stated those votes would not count and everyone knew that ahead of time. Clinton decided she would leave her name on the ballet and that is fine, but she already knew that her votes would not count. It was a strategic move on Clinton's part to gain more media exposure at the expense of controversy.

Super Tuesday 2 is the beginning of the end for the Cult Obama campaign.  To stave off the inevitable implosion of cult leader Obama, they are engaging in old Republican attacks on Sen. Clinton.  Cult leader Obama will obviously do anything to win; the ends justify the means - this is no change to believe in.

Going forward its vision (Hillary Clinton) over leap of faith (cult leader Obama) and experience over inexperience.  Cult leader Obama cannot win but only implode.

Cult leader Obama should do the patriotic thing to step down now and ask Sen. Clinton to consider him for the #2 slot on her ticket.
OMG What kind of idiots does the Hillary campaign take us for? They throw the kitchen sink, then call for Obama to "Be Positive"? They are a bunch of B@$@S#$T*^R#D*s.
There's definitely something fishy about the whole Obama-Canadian NAFTA conversation. Today's Globe and Mail (Canada's equivalent to The New York Times) has a story that the chief of staff to Canada's arch-conservative prime minister leaked the memo. Even more interesting is the comment the chief of staff made before the memo was released that it was Clinton's people who said her NAFTA position was political posturing. The US news media needs to follow this story.
Once more time Hillary Clinton insults the intelligence of the voters. Just unbelievable. How can ANYONE fail to see how two faced she's being?
The fact that Hillary is called a "whiner" while a man would be viewed as "standing up for himself" points up the sexism that's rampant in this race. Hillary is a fighter, a do-er, an accomplished woman - and many men can't handle that. I can't believe they'd turn the keys to the country over to an inexperienced man who makes a feel-good speech over a woman who is fully prepared to assume the responsibilities of the presidency. But then I have to remember that men were largely responsible for Bush being elected the second time.
If Clinton wants the super delegates to grant her the nomination, she must immediately release her tax returns, her White House recerds, and the Clinton Foundation donor list. The GOP will certainly make the same demand in the general election. Barring any improprieties, she might actually gain their support. Democratic voters have a right to full disclosure by both candidates.
Shame on you Hillary Clinton! When running for your first political job as New York's senator against Rudy Giuliani, who was very popular in the wake of 9/11 and had prostate cancer, it was suddenly revealed that he's had an affair. The one two punch was too much and Rudy gave up his bid for the Senate Seat. Funny since your husband was discredited by many women who have been sexually exploited and abused such as Kathleen Willey, Gennifer Flowers, Paula Jones Juanita Broaddrick(who accused Clinton of rape) and Elizabeth Ward Gracen. Now when asked about tax returns you don't want to ante up? Is it possible that Guistra who gave 130 million to the Clinton Library(which the New York Times stated that it caused a threat to National Security) might have been the 5 million you suddenly came up with in January race for President? Shame on You Hillary Clinton. I am a white 60 year old woman and I do not support Bill or Hillary Rodham Clinton.
Oh my gosh!  She wants him to run a positive campaign?  What could possibly be her motivation for such a call?  My guess is, he's been snooping in her closet and she knows there's alot of new stuff he could expose about her.  She should have thought about that before she implied he's a Muslim, before she accused him of plagirism.....in fact, before she even opened her mouth.  If he has more dirt to throw on this garbage pile, start unloading.
what a joke. she is the one who has been slinging mud. i am a life long democrat, voted for bill clinton twice, but i support barack obama now. if hillary wins because of some back room deal or because she continues her outrageous attacks, i will not vote for her. i would rather stay home. i've been following the campaign so closely for the the past year but it has gotten so negative now that i can't even turn on the news. she doesn't seem to understand or care about the damage she is doing to the democratic party.
Just imagine for a moment the volcanic response the Clinton campaign would have had if Obama or any of his staff had merely uttered the name Ken Staff?  Been shaking my head since yesterday over this one.  What a *wonderful* reason to give a little history lesson to the many new voters who don't know how humiliating well, unseemly, it was during the Clinton years.
Way to go bringing up Ken Starr.I have 2 children that can vote that were too young to know who he was yet Hillary's man is rekindling Whitewater.
