Obama gains more supers

Posted: Thursday, March 06, 2008 4:55 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC’s Domenico Montanaro
Obama gained two more superdelegates today -- NV State Party Vice Chairwoman Teresa Benitez-Thompson and Rep. Nick Rahall (D-WV).

This brings the delegate total to: Obama 1,581-Clinton 1,481

Superdelegates: Clinton 254-Obama 215

NBC Hard Count: Obama 1,366-Clinton 1,227

There are 21 delegates unallocated, including 10 in Texas, 9 in Colorado, 1 in Hawaii and 1 Abroad.

Here's the March 4th breakdown:
TX: Clinton 92-91 (+1 for Clinton, with 10 delegates from the caucuses still unallocated)
OH: Clinton 75-66 (+9 for Clinton)
RI: Clinton 13-8 (+5 for Clinton)
VT: Obama 9-6 (+3 for Obama)

This gives Clinton a +12 net delegate gain out of March 4th and could be trimmed slightly because of those TX caucuses delegates still to be allocated.

*** UPDATE *** The Obama campaign also sent out a release today on gaining the support of Vermont Party Chairman Ian Carleton, but we already had him factored in, as he was on a list provided to us previously by the campaign.

He will get more.  They know a true leader when they see one!
All of them should go ahead and back Obama.  They know that the Clintons' are bad news for everyone except for themselves.
Here is some interesting analysis of what might happen in a Michigan re-vote, based on the results from the first election coupled with exit polls:

The Clinton party is over. But the trashing of America has just begun.  God help us.

We have heard that Obama is trying to win on math alone...  Obama HAS won.

That is the reality any intelligent person would perceive, even if that reality is a great disappointment.

It is over... how she could destroy the party and its chances in November with a campaign based on mudslinging and character assassination, a campaign doomed to fail unless Obama quits or is otherwise disabled...

Is she hoping he will fall down the stairs?  Wow.

She has gone over the top, but not in delegates.

Many are questioning her present state of mind and for good reason.

The media do a disservice if they do not, at least, shine a light on what is happening and what the mentality into which the Clinton campaign has morphed.

Thank you Newsweek and Jonathon Alter.

Say it louder and clearer, Chuck.  It's important.

You know very well of what I speak, I suspect.

Keep fighting Barack, keep fighting.  Come back hard on the snake Wolfson for trying to link your name to Ken Starr's.  Can you imagine the yelling and screaming and whining Senator Clinton would be doing on national TV had someone from the Obama campaign DARED to link her to a hated figure in the opposite party?
So much for a momentum-changing day for the Hillary campaign...I guess lies and half-truths don't always work.
It is interesting to consider that if Democrats had the same "winner take all" policy as Republicans do with their primary, Sen. Clinton would be at about 1,920 delegates right now...and much closer than Sen. Obama to securing the nomination.

I also wish the press would talk about the fact that if Michigan and Florida decide to hold primaries that the actual number needed for the nomination will also have to rise.  The current number of 2,024 was calculated without Michigan and Florida.
Hillary should fight in every state.  She should go toe to toe with Obama in Wyoming and Mississippi.  She should get rid of Mark Penn who was responsible for her big state strategy.  Had she fought she could have picked up a number of the twelve she lost after super Tuesday.  At a minimum she would not have lost as many delagates.  Penn statements to the media that Maria Doyle was responsible for Hillary's slide is simply fingerpointing by a paid political hack who accepts no responsibility.  The only way Hillary will lose is if she keeps taking advice from hacks like Penn.  Thank heaven for McAullife and Ickes.  Go Hillary Go
You cant help but to think that she wins the popular vote by 5% inTexas yet loses the superdelegate count, which is an idependant vote not tied to voter constituents yet usually happens like that so HOW did Obama win in the caucus? Does this contradict what obama said initially about superdelegates should go with the voters in thier area - despite Kennedy being able to be an exception to the rule of course because it is in obamas favor (flip-flopping on this isssue too - lol)

Mississippi should fall hard for Dumbama and probably Wyoming but Hillary needs to stay close in those states - can she win Wyoming? And if she can pull one of these off - wooo wooo!

Checkmate!
Didn't the Dayton mayor Rhine McLinand also W Va Rep Nick Rahall endorse him today? Both are superdelegates.
When is CO going to figure out its delegate allocation?  Are they just slow about it, or is there something special about how they dole them out that makes it take longer?
It doesn't matter. SHe won and he is done. After Florida and michigan move to her column he is done.
I thought Hillary was supposed to be in the drivers seat now. She did win Ohio, remember? Then why is it that superdelegates keep coming into Obama's camp?

You have a mess Howard Dean. You had just better meet with Hillary and tell her to pack it in.
Carleton-VT also goes for Obama today.

Boxer- Ca goes to Clinton.
ONE MORE SUPER_DELEGATE for BHO today: Vermont dem. party chair Ian Carleton....  drip, drip...
care to add W VA's Nick Rahall?
Ian Carleton, VT superdelegate also announced he is supporting Obama.
The slow steady stream continues...
Five more superD's since Tuesday.
Hilliary gains a whole 12 delegates before giving some back after Wyoming & Mississppi. What's the point of all this?
Hillary stays in = party destroyed
Neither Hillary or Barack will have enough delegates to win the nomination going to the convention this summer. What a fight it will be to watch the Florida and Michigan delegates try to vote, and Howard Dean screaming at them to leave. Denver police are ordering extra Tasers for the occasion.
Ian Carleton - head of Dem. Party in Vermont also endorsed Sen. Obama today.
So, Chuck, by the math...Obama is going to win the Texas delegates.  It seems to me that winning a state like Texas should maybe be a headline.

http://infogiant.wordpress.com/2008/03/06/hillary-wins-texas-oh-waitno-she-didnt/
Hillary should reisgn the race, say she's sorry for all the lies she told about Barack Obama, and not damage the party any further.
don't forget "Ian Carleton, a superdelegate from Vermont, announced he is supporting Senator Barack Obama for President today"
If the Democrats had primaries that were winner take all, Hillary would be winning by over 300 delegates. Also if you were to include Mich. and Florida, she would be blowing Barrack Hussein Obama away. The super delegates need to take this into consideration when they cast their votes. They would be throwing them toward a candidate that has no chance to win the big states in November if they go with Obama.
I think this is the DNC saying, enough to the Clintons. That's the only way to explain these delegates still jumping ship after Hillary's "big wins".

The problem is that the voting public is nowhere near being that nuianced. This will fly over our collective head and we'll still be in-fighting. Isn't the King Solomon parabole of the 2 mothers fighting for the infant?

I wonder which candidate will step down for the good of the party? It seems Hillary would have the ship go down with her.

Come one, stop calling Texas a 'win' for Clinton.

It was a 'win' for Obama--a definite win on delegates, even though some haven't been 'officially' allocated.

At the very least, start calling TEXAS a DRAW.
Hillary is making such a big deal out of March 4 -- she nets 12 delegates (or less). Obama gets 174 and Hillary 186 -- to me that's a 48%/52% split -- not exactly a landslide....
Patty from SD, CA, scared the heck out of these superdelegates by saying it is perfectly acceptable to lie in politics. Superdelegates are not as dumb as she is, and I honestly beleive Patty needs a psychologist to help her out because to say that lying is acceptable is a sign of som sort of psychological disorder.
We refuse to be mislead and we -- Americans -- demand accountability. No matter who Americans vote for, we should not permit disintegrity in our government and we expect all elected officials to be accountable for their actions -- we are not voting for them to deceive us, but to lead us with integrity and accountability like Abraham Lincoln.
NPR is reporting that Obama won Texas due to the results of the caucus.  He will gain 3 delegates more than Clinton out of Texas. Spread the word!  Why isn't anyone else reporting this?
Actually, there were three superdelegates who came out in support of Obama today.  You missed Ian Carleton of Vermont.

from the Obama website:
BURLINGTON, VT –Ian Carleton, a superdelegate from Vermont, announced he is supporting Senator Barack Obama for President today, citing his ability to unite the country:

“Vermonters overwhelmingly embraced Senator Obama's message of hope and change in our State's primary earlier this week, and so it is with great excitement and optimism that I pledge my support for Barack Obama.  Since the very beginning of his campaign I, along with so many Vermonters, have been deeply moved by Senator Obama's commitment to moving beyond the negative partisan rhetoric that has sadly characterized our nation's politics for so long.  His leadership and vision for a more productive and decent future is exactly what this nation needs at this moment in history.”

Ian Carleton is the Chairman of the Vermont Democratic Party and an attorney at firm Sheehey Furlong & Behm in Burlington.

She voted for the war.  The Democratic Party needs to present a true anti-war candidate this year.  Let's do this.

Obama 08!
First Read, why don't you just do every one a favor and say you support Obama.  It is so obvious that you are so biased in your reporting.  That way at least one would know why you put out the garbage you do and continually slam Hillary.  Would be fair don't you think since you are so very biased in your reporting?
She can't win... the math doesn't work.  It's too late. I'm not saying she should quit yet, but she should also not drag this out all spring either.
As well it could mean Clinton has closed the gap by 22 delegates - LOL! Those superdelegates form the caucuses may still very well vote for Clinton  - why so pessamistic, Domenico? Oh, that's rigth you support Dumbama - I forgot, my bad dude!
Someone tell MSNBC and Chuck Todd that fawning over Obama is soooooo passe'. So last week. Did Chuck Todd watch Saturday Night Live?
Hopefully he will smash her in Wyoming and Mississippi. Of course to Clinton Wyoming won't count b/c there are more horses than people, an dMississippi will not count b/c there are too many black people in the democratic electorate that will not vote for her!!! So Clinton if you do get the democratic nod than I will congratulate you for being the President of Calitexnewjersarizohio!!!
This means Obama has gained about 45 superdelegates since super tuesday, while clinton has lost 6. So the net gain for obama is about 50 superdelegates in one month. What a momentum! this sends a message - superdelegates are obama. over the pledged delegates, practically, clinton has not gained. Obama leads by about the same margin despite her so called big wins. Obama 08

Flashback! HRC once thought taxes should be open

A trip down memory lane:

Eight years ago, when Hillary parachuted into NY to become our Senator, she and Howard Wolfson became completely obsessed with opponent Rick Lazio's tax returns, which he did not release until the end of August..

They talked about them at every opportunity. In early July, Hillary called it "frankly disturbing." A guy in an Uncle Sam outfit was dispatched to be a nuisance at various Lazio events in August. Howard himself showed up once to try to rattle Lazio by offering him a copy of some Chappaqua property tax receipt after Lazio said he'd release his state returns as soon as Hillary released hers (which didn't exist, because she had just moved up here).

This produced a lot of coverage. We've copied one of the stories after the jump, if you're interested. But obviously, what brings it to mind is the current discussions of when, if ever, Clinton and Wolfson will release her tax returns as she runs for president this year. Their attitude has been, basically, when they feel like it.

Pressed again today by the Obama campaign, Wolfson said: "Their tax returns since they left the White House will be made available on or around April 15."

Maybe a reporter could, like, actually risk getting Wolfson mad by trying to pin him down on whether "on or around April 15" will definitely be before the Pennsylvania primary on April 22, and why a 2001 return from a sitting NY senator can't be copied by, say, March 15?

Without being too cute here, the question is why Clinton and Wolfson were so obsessed by Lazio's returns that they were disrupting his events, but they now treat it as an irrelevancy when Hillary's returns are requested. There's occasionally the suggestion that different standards apply to a primary. But that makes no sense, especially when you're already an officeholder. Republicans are entitled to see Hillary's returns before making their decision, but not Dems?

No, it seems more like a reflection of the way Hillary and her team think. Principled people would reason as follows: "Since we made a huge fuss about Lazio's returns in 2000, to be consistent we should be very diligent about being just as transparent as Obama and releasing our own returns this year. Otherwise, we would be behaving like hypocrites."

But that's not what they're doing. So the reasoning is apparently this: "We acted like Lazio's tax returns were a big deal in 2000 because it was in our self-interest to do so, and this year we'll act like our returns aren't a big deal because it's in our self interest to do so. We don't act on principle, and we don't care about being consistent, and we don't care about being hypocritical."

Is there another explanation? If not -- what a great role model for our daughters!!!

New York Times: 8/17/2000

BTW First Read,
Someone posted asking all journalists to release federal tax documents of their own! What a crazed person. That means all journalists are presidential candidates, and we'll have hundreds or even thousands of candidates competing for the presidency.
Many posters post outright silly comments because they are unable to think about anything else to say of substance. And the Rekzo issue is their best defense in the face of Hillary's own many more Rekzo-type scandals and even worse.
ALL THE SUPER-DELEGATES SHOULD MIGRATE TO OBAMA BECAUSE OF CAMP HILLARY'S LIES ON NAFTA!  THOSE LIES COST OBAMA ELECTIONS IN OHIO AND TEXAS!

THIS WOULD TEACH HER A LESSON!!
Ian Carleton, a superdelegate from Vermont, announced he is supporting Senator Barack Obama for President today ALSO!!!

That brings the total for the day to +3 for Obama.  Please change your count.
THERE ARE CHILDREN IN THE STATE OF NEW YORK HARLAM DISTRICT WHO HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR THAT CALL FROM HILLARY CLINTON FOR YEARS READ THE BOOK "AMAZING GRACE BY jONATHAN kOZOL.THE CALL NEVER WAS ANSWERED BY HER OR RUDY.
Ian Carleton, a superdelegate from Vermont, announced he is supporting Senator Barack Obama for President today ALSO!!!

That brings the total for the day to +3 for Obama.  Please change your count.
Much Ado About Nothing should be the title of media coverage of the Democratic race this week.
SUPER! Let the floodgates open.
My question is this.  If the purpose of the super delegates is to make a final determination after all is said and done, why are they allowed to pledge their delegates now?  I'd find that especially hard to understand in states that haven't voted yet.
all the crying from clinton , get over it . she cant win . the math does not work period . and if you think the superdelegates are going to overturn the will of the people you are dilusional. she is just in the race to cause havic .
In Obama's scheme of things Benitez-Thompson must vote for Hillary. Or does that only apply to Hillary's superdelegates?
What's the deal with Texas?? Where are the results from the caucus? According to the rules, the caucus portion of the Texas "two Step" COUNTS for allocated delegates right? Clinton did NOT win Texas!!! Where is the coverage on this?  Doesn't this make "Clinton's big Comeback" seem a little stupid?
