Hillary questions Obama's security creds

From NBC/NJ's Athena Jones and Aswini Anburajan
WASHINGTON, DC -- Hillary Clinton today suggested Barack Obama had not met the commander-in-chief test.

She said that proving he was ready would be important with John McCain as the Republican nominee and with national security as a key issue in the election.

"I think it's imperative that each of us be able to demonstrate we can cross the commander-in-chief threshold, and I believe that I've done that. Certainly, Sen. McCain has done that, and you'll have to ask Sen. Obama with respect to his candidacy," she said during a meeting with military officers and other national security experts in Washington, which was convened to discuss her own readiness for the job and her plans for dealing with the war in Afghanistan.

The New York senator began the meeting by talking about the support she had received from military officers. "As president, I will draw on the experience of leaders such as those you see before you to confront our challenges and to seize our opportunities to build a safer and more just world," she said, adding that she was grateful to have her own experience to draw on having lived at both ends of Pennsylvania Avenue and having traveled to more than 80 countries representing the country.

She mentioned having had a conversation today with King Abdullah of Jordan to discuss challenges facing the region. "Some may believe that experience doesn't matter or that even in today's world it is a liability. But as generals and admirals, ambassadors, and other senior leaders charged with protecting our security know, experience doesn't just count for something. Often when lives are on the line and a decision must be made, experience counts for everything. In this election, we need a nominee who can pass the commander-in-chief test," she said.

But in a conference call with reporters today, Obama foreign affairs adviser Susan Rice questioned Clinton's own experience. "You don't get that experience from being married to a commander in chief," she said.

Rice and Greg Craig, another Obama adviser, repeated a constant theme of the Obama campaign that Clinton's initial vote for the war in Iraq made her judgment on foreign policy poorer than Obama's. Rice also tried to walk a fine line by trying to discredit any substantive work that Clinton had done as First Lady, while trying not to undermine the role.

She praised the work of Laura Bush and Clinton as goodwill ambassadors who did "laudable work" on specific issues in the international arena, but she said that the U.S. government does not turn to the First Lady in a time of crisis. She also claimed that Clinton's claims that she had played roles in the conflict in Bosnia, Macedonia, and Northern Ireland were overstated.

"She took a trip to Bosnia with Chelsea, Sinbad and Sheryl Crow. She claimed that bullets were flying in the air, but she was at a meet and greet and concert for the troops," Rice claimed.

The Clinton campaign has been pushing the national security theme hard for days, beginning with their release of the "Children" ad -- with a ringing phone and a question about who voters want answering the phone at 3:00 am in the event of a crisis.

During the brief Q&A at her meeting, Clinton was asked about her role when her husband answered phone calls during crises in the middle of the night.

"I don't talk about the conversations that I had with my husband in the White House, but obviously I was there for a lot of phone calls at different times of the day and night, and I have a very clear idea of what it takes to be prepared and ready to not only to answer the phone but then to make the decisions that are required depending on what the crisis is."

Even those who did not vote for Clinton agree she is ready to protect the country
One can only wonder that, when the phone rang at 3:00 am, what her 'hands on experience' involved. Shame on you Hillary, for using a tactic that you, yourself, have never felt. Fear. Try waking up in the middle of the night with sirens going off and calls of 'incoming' sounding everywhere. The only thing you're afraid of is losing. Get real, because the real world is a lot scarier than you could ever imagine.
I did not know that the threshold to be president had lowered so much!
New Threshhold: Have a known name nationwide. That is it. Being arrogant, value loyalty over qualification, stubborness are also a plus.
fyi

Obama did not have a vote on the war.  So to say that he was against the war is pointless. alot of Americans did not vote for the war either and as you can see that did not stop the war from happening. Also am not to sure if Obama had a chance to vote on the war he would have voted along party lines. He speaks about change but change in politics means having both house and a solid relationship with big business. No president can get anything done without the 3 items mentioned above. This is not Camelot. Obama nor Clinton has earned my vote. But if I was to vote today I would vote for Clinton. Am not willing to take the wait and see position with Obama and his wife pissed me off with some of her comments....One day we'll wake up and get it.
Did I read this correctly that HRC said her Republican opponent was more qualified to be CIC than her Democratic opponent?  And then with the Ken Starr crap yesterday as well?

This is what I get for supporting them in the 90's?  The Clintons can go scratch.  This is exactly why she is not winning this race and will have no chance.  Voters are sick of this type of thing, which is why she will never understand the secret of Obama's success.

For the first time in 6 presidential elections, her behavior in the past two days has caused me to make my first-ever donation to a political campaign...

By the way, Hillary, I live in Indiana and will be voting on May 6...

Obama 2008!
McCain will say the things that Clinton is already saying.

So, why can't she say it now?  Obama's own voters are saying it anyway in their exit pole.

Democrats will win based on economy, education and healthcare.

But if they start with giving up the commander in chief role to Republican to start with, the candidate can not win.

In last 42 years since Carter, only one Democrat has won and that Democrat was rendering terrorist individuals rather than destroying Countries like Republicans.

Democrats can make the case as Commander in Chief.  They can not hope Republicans will be nice to them and not bring up this issue.
Hillary Clinton is running as a tuff-as-nails
Commander-In-Chief.

Only one small problem with this...

We already have a nominee who actually IS a
tuff-as-nails Commander-In-Chief.

Say hello to President John McCain!
I see that most people have the same question I do.  What experience does HRC have?  She was the first lady, yes understood, but I seriously doubt that anyone was asking for her opionion on national security issues while Bill was running this country.  I am a independent voter and will vote for the person I think will put American's first.  My vote is going to Mr. Obama.  HRC is just tearing the Dem. party apart.  But I expect nothing else from the Clinton family.  They only care about themselves, not the American people.
when is it Obama's turn to meet and answer question as she has had to?
Heres a question, If Rezco is no big deal with Obama supporters why are they trying to hang him around Clintons neck.
You guys really know how to play double standards really well.
Also, She has experience working in government, she was not just Bills wife for all those years, but Obama supporters are willing to ignore history to make their argument that she has no experience.
Why do you think that Clinton supporters will not just jump on your bandwagon, it is because your arguments are weak and full of holes.
You have, from the very beginning, tore down Senator Clinton, complained about HER being negative and spent very little time telling us why Senator Obama is the better candidate.
While I have looked at both web sites and compared their issues, most Obama supporters have used the politics of personality to argue for their candidate, and then blamed Clinton for the things that they themselves are doing everyday.
If you can't support your candidate on the issues then why should I even think about voting for him?
If you can answer that question then I will listen but if you continue down the road you have been traveling on, I will continue to ignore you.
Like I have always said, I will vote for the party candidate, who ever it is, while I see many independents crying foul and saying they will jump ship and vote for McCain if Hillary is the choice.
So, if you don't get your way in our party you will switch sides and vote for the candidate with the least experience on the economy, sounds like you would cut off your nose to spite your face.
And you call Clinton supporters uneducated!
Sounds like emotions sway you over intellect.
Oh well, zealots never listen to reason, they don't have to, they are completly right on everything. Sounds like republicans to me, so join the elephant party because you are not the independent thinkers you would have us believe you are.
How can anyone deny that Hillary Clinton spent at least 8 years very near the center of action.  She was not an official participant in the meetings etc. but as a participant at diplomatic functions she met, spoke and developed a relationship with many current world leaders.  Compared to the experiance brought by other individuals to the White House I think she ranks high on the list.

Obama has made a point of the value of his anti-war arguement being superior to Clinton or McCains' based on his position on the war when he was running for his Senate seat.  I may not agree with his point but he isn't being unfair.

Clinton has made a point of her being better prepared to argue experiance with John Mccain due to her familiarity with Washington and international politics.  You may not agree but it is a fair arguement.

One might reasonably question how working hard on the streets of Chicago to improve the lot of the neighborhood prepares one for the international stage?  If you think being a communitee organizer provides the sophistication and training one might need to deal with other world leaders in times of conflict then Barach is qualified in this area.
I want to know whos ready to take on the economy, our troops, and seems to me you are finding the irag more important and issue than this...Tell me when the troops come home to an american with no job, oil, gas, care for the families, etc.  what are you going to tell them im more worried about be commander in cheif so i can continue the war, knowing that i also dont have a more funds to cintinue unless i drain the american people first....The war is important to me to have the troops come home with dignity and completeing there mission, but right now
Ther is not an American country to come home to the rating of our government is 24 percent, what a sham...Where are all these politicians, running around the country making promises that should have been addressed years ago.....No its politics as usual with parties first and the american people last...It also amazes me to see these people who once were elecdted politicians and some employed at the White House now news people or supposedly experts and good at stirring up the fire with what they think is the best for this country...Media seems to have control of the elections and voters have no idea who to trust.....We need change and unfortunatley it wont happen until the American Voter takes back washington....
You gotta love Hillary. Not only is she willing to say anything to sound the part, she is open to embracing the opposition candidate in her attempt to do so. And Democrats must support her? PLEASE.
Hillary-Started out as a Goldwater republican, flipped over to be a democrat,Acted like a dem until the small states of the U.S.A and some hard working Obama campaigners  out worked her.Out smarted her worked there a@#off to win the small non-essential states like mine, has a big lead in the  delegate count ,knows she cannot win fair and square now wants to shred the party in a (if I can't win I will help our opponent" attitude .Fine with me. PLEASE flip back and be a rep again. You and McBush would be a ticket we all would feel comfortable with.Or do you feel it is your right to tear apart the party.since you are so far behind. Please stop playing games with our party, all the slim you throw, all the lies, all the poor old me stuff, everyone in the media is picking on me,,,,,,PLEASE.    LEAVE.   NOW,
I know you only want pro BO posts but WE need to know if he has to take; A DRUG TEST?

A TOP SECRECT SECURITY CLEAREANCE FOR OBAMA???
I know you only want pro BO posts but WE need to know if he has to take; A DRUG TEST?

A TOP SECRECT SECURITY CLEAREANCE FOR OBAMA???
She's an embarrassment to professional women everywhere.
I've been working as a chemist for seven years, so obviously my husband has seven years of experience being a chemist. My husband's been working as an electrical engineer for ten years, so obviously I have the credentials of ten years of electrical engineering.
As a working women, this argument makes me sick to my stomach. Yes, I would love to see a woman in the White House, BUT it should be someone who gets there on HER OWN MERITS, and not on her husband's record. It's EMBARRASSING to women.

Ann:  you are dead on. And, playing the racial and victim card is a further insult.
