Revisiting Bob Johnson

From NBC's Mark Murray
On the conference call in which the Clinton campaign -- through their congressional supporters -- called for Obama to dismiss Samantha Power from his campaign, a reporter asked this question: What about how the Clinton campaign handled Bob Johnson's controversial remarks about Obama?

Remember, in January, Johnson -- the founder of BET and a Clinton backer -- made a comment about Obama and his youthful drug use before introducing Clinton at an event in South Carolina. Referring to the controversy about whether Bill and Hillary Clinton were injecting race into the Dem contest, Johnson said, "As an African American, I am frankly insulted that the Obama campaign would imply that we are so stupid that we would think Hillary and Bill Clinton, who have been deeply and emotionally involved in black issues, when Barack Obama was doing something in the neighborhood that I won't say what he was doing but he said it in his book." Johnson also compared Obama to Sidney Poitier's character in "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner."

On the very day that Johnson made that comment, the Clinton campaign issued a statement from Johnson. “My comments today were referring to Barack Obama's time spent as a community organizer, and nothing else," he said. "Any other suggestion is simply irresponsible and incorrect."

At an MSNBC debate two days later, Clinton stood by Johnson's words, despite the uproar they produced. "Well, Bob has put out a statement saying what he was trying to say and what he thought he had said. We accept him on his word on that."

It wasn't until four days after his initial remarks that Johnson apologized to Obama -- reversing his earlier explanation that he was talking about Obama's work as a community organizer. "I'm writing to apologize to you and your family personally for the un-called-for comments I made at a recent Clinton event," he said in a statement. "In my zeal to support Senator Clinton, I made some very inappropriate remarks for which I am truly sorry. I hope that you will accept this apology. Good luck on the campaign trail."

On the conference call today, Clinton communications director Howard Wolfson said there was a difference between Johnson and Power. "Bob Johnson is a supporter of ours," he said, "but he is not someone who advises [the campaign] on a daily basis." Wolfson added, "There is a difference."

There is also a difference of the speed in which the two campaigns responded to the two controversial comments.

Typical Hillary response.  "It's different if it's us."
Actually Mark, I don't see a timing difference.  Power made her comments on Monday.  That is four days ago.
Mark Murray:

The Clintons - they are never, ever going to change.

In case you haven't noticed, the Clinton campaign has no class.

In case you hadn't noticed, the Clinton White House had no class.

And in case you hadn't noticed, the country is now taking things into their own hands.

Obama/Webb 2008.
what? do you want him to resign? he is not a rookie and he is not sorry for calling it like it is.
You know, with the two Hillary aides that forwarded around the Muslim e-mail smear, and the Clinton camp person who said he went to a radical Islamic school, I'm surprised Hillary would make a big deal of this
The spin isn't working anymore Howard..go join the RNC when the campaign is over. McCain/Clinton 08 right?
americans must get rid of clintons. else the same old politics will continue. please vote wisely. vote change. vote obama.
I am amazed at the amount of latitude the Clinton campaign receives.  Is the reversal of the NAFTA leak/meeting with Clinton true or false?  This is major.  Why haven't you pursued this?  Also, what about the $150K donation form the sexual harrassment lawyers?

Either perform your job media, or cease the smash Obama campaign.
It is different, he wrote in his book he did drugs. Has he taken a drug test lately? Could be it's not in the past at all. She was working for his right's while he was on the streets with gangs.
When is Hillary going to reject and denounce Bob Johnson?  The latino lady from texas?  Her innuendo about Obama being a Muslim on 60 Minutes?

SHAME ON YOU Hillary!!!
Doesn't Rodham rhyme with Saddam?  Does that met the threshold to say someone is Muslim?
Either perform your job media, or cease the smash Obama campaign.

Too late to stop it. The clinton machine is oging full speed now.

Move over Obama. The Clinton machine is going to run you over on their way to the white house.

Don't hate the playa, hate the game.
Obama's advisor should be let go, no question. Absolutely unacceptable.

This is POLITICS, we have NO USE for someone who is going to tell the truth.

Get her out of here.
Geez Lewis in OH, go back to your KKK meeting and leave us alone.
Hillary had people step down for e-mails and statements too and fast so dont even go there. Johnson wa sright too and had a right to be offended .that was Obama was lieing to make race an issue useing clintons. He twisted and jumped and wailed. It was them against us and made the race full of race.Thats how he got S.Carolina and even now if its a state with blacks in it in numbers polls give it to him and say cause of blacks. He smiles at that and uses it.Obama is a racist and will ruin this country.Johnson was shut up by crying foul like they shut up Pres. Clinton.Make everyone afraid to question cause we have all worked hard to get away from raceism. No one wants to be associated with being racial. They are good at what they do.His wife said we know Chiago politcs and are good at it.They sure are heres an example.Going to change anything for better my foot.He has damaged this country for his own means. He didnt even live here while we all worked on civil rights and being one.It wasnt easy for anyone white or black at times. He doesnt care,When no use throws them away. Not Hilary. Blacks are the strongest people I know. THey know how to stand up for right!!I believe they will. They can get help if they need protection . It isnt like the old days any more we ARE one. Obama is the only one doesnt see it. He wasnt here and doesnt care. It is all about him.I think Johnson was and is a hero.He was speaking the truth.Even so he apolized cause Hillary wants things to be good.
this is ridiculous.  I posted an entry about this topic on my blog: http://swimmingfreestyle.typepad.com/swimming_freestyle/2008/03/suck-it-up-hill.html
An excerpt:
Jeez, Senator Clinton, this is starting to look like pro wrestling here.  Lots of drama, hammy acting and over exaggerated responses to what all observing can plainly see are pulled punches and minor blows.

Suck it up Senator.  Is this what you think is "tough enough" to be President of the United States?  What are you going to do if you're elected, call for the firing of anyone who calls you a bad name?
People, lets calm down.
The Clintons are the Clintons.  They are, well... you know... held to a different standard than the rest of us.
Power was obligated to resign not just because of what she said, but the fact that she said it about a Clinton.

Now, don't get your tempers up.  Mrs Clinton will hold a press conference very soon to tell the press what to write about all of this.  And then you'll have the only explanation you ever need.
You are just scratching the surface. I can't believe that the American public can be so easily led by the nose when it comes to Hillary. I used to be a military man and I wouldn't trust her for a second with our nations security. Most presidents that turn out to be good leaders have the help of a crack staff that they can rely on. She can't even keep  her goons in check in a presidential campaign! She really needs to have her feet held to the fire on this and the MSM seems so squeamish when it comes down to "VETTING" her. I have a friend in town that is a big GOP supporter and I  told him to save me a huge McCain sign for my lawn just in case she wins the nomination.
Is Howard Wolfson still there?  When is Howard Wolfson resigning for his own comments?
Another example of the big lie that the media favors Obama.  The media spoon feeds us every piece of garbage the Clintons come up with.

Where has the media been, for instance, as Hillary sells her supposed superior red telephone style experience, based on nothing more than physically being in the White House as the President's wife?  Did she ever sit in on a cabinet or other high level meeting on any crisis?  Were her trips anything more than First Lady tea and cookie events?

The  story of the conference call in which not a single adviser could come up with a single example of Hillary dealing with a crisis in real life came and went with lightning speed while the wrong information about the supposed Obama wink to Canada about NAFTA got played over and over everywhere.   If it weren't for Keith Olbermann there would be no balance whatsoever to counter the pro-Hillary media bias.
OMG!!

Is it possible to get objective coverage of or about Hillary Clinton, from msnbc?  Even the other cable news networks talk openly about how much of a politcal shrill msnbc is for Obama.

This hapless comparison of apples and oranges is so typicl of why msnbc/nbc has the lowest news rating of all televised news.

You have to wonder what the real deal news people at msnbc feel about the blatant hypocrisy of this news organizations overt bias. Probably like the rest of the people who search for serious coverage, they laugh and make fun of it....
Come to yoursenses democrats.Hating will only bring you anotherBush term.Check this out:
http://middlebrainedmusings.blogspot.com/
i cant stand the clintons. i am more interested in switching to an independent status than democratic voter status because i just cannot believe half of this party is buying into the argument that she is more experience.. and allow her to publicly accept racist, sexist, crude and childish comments and not be criticized for it. after 8 years of cringing every time bush speaks, i refuse to go through another 4 years of bickering and scandals and childish banter. I WANT TO CRINGE NO MORE.

and actually chris from NY, clinton never decried johnson's remarks, even AFTER HE APOLOGIZED FOR THEM! She outright accepted them. Within hours of Samantha's comments being made public, Obama personally rejected her statements about Hillary, and she resigned. Huge difference, my friend. Its people like you who are perpetuating the demise of this country.

If nothing else, these blogs prove the average Clinton supporter is uneducated.

Mark perhaps you should leave your job at MSNBC and go work for the Obama campaign...you can take Matthews, Olberman, Russert with you.
I totally agree with Jesses' comments. Clinton has received tremendous leeway from the press. They are having a hard time questionning her because she is a woman and has played the victim/fighter card perfectly. She is also deftly playing the press, and in this area, she is VERY experienced.
You may hate Hillary Clinton but Obama won't get to 40% in a national vote...dems shouldn't confuse the enthusiasm of the youth and do gooder guilt ridden wealthy whites as a tsunami of support for obama the flywieght politician.
That's right MSNBC - Obama camp screws up but you make sure and spin it as not being as bad as the Hillary camp - or better yet, you can surely come up with a way to make this all Hillary's fault.  What is your station going to do when Obama loses and is out of the race?  His supporters will quit watching you and that is all you have left for an audience. Your unbelievable bias has totally alienated all other viewers - especially women.

I'm sure you won't post this - it's A) Not Pro Obama and B) not Pro MSNBC.
You know I'll believe the Clinton's are above personal attacks when the dismiss Howard Wolfson for calling Senator Obama, Ken Starr.  How about that?
Obama people are rookies. The keep making rookie mistakes. We can't afford to have rookies run our country.

Clinton 08

Don't hate the player, hate the game.
Bob Johnson just happened to show that he was willing to say anything to help out a friend during camapaign time. Samantha Power spoke the god honest truth, notwithstanding how despicable it is to say so. NEXT.
Another Posting defending the Obama campaign.  Really doing your job well, MSNBC.
Personally I don't think Obama should have accepted Samatha Power's resignation, but that's not my call. Hillary and her whole gang ARE a bunch of monsters who, astoundingly, have the gall to cry victim at every turn. "They asked for our taxes! They're attacking us!" PLEASE...
I wish Howard Dean would knock their heads together.
I absolutely hate this. I'm seriously un-registering from the Party as soon as I can get down to city hall.
Ralph Nader is making more and more sense to me, we need the threat of a third party to get these jokers to talk about the importnat issues.
TO Patty, sd, ca:  We don't hate the "playa" (how lame are you to use that term?) or the game--we just hate idiots.
Hillary and her campaign continue to try to hold Obama and his campaign to a higher set of standards than they're willing to adhere to. Apparently Hillary and her people can mock and deride Obama all they  want to.

And what about Hillary's Machiavelian response to "60-Minutes" Steve Croft's question to her about whether or not she believed Obama was a Muslim? She knows very well he is a Christian. So she could have clearly and finally put an end to the untrue rumor with an unequivocol "No, there's no truth to that rumor". But she purposely chose not to just before the Ohio and Texas primaries.
For a campaign that whines constantly about being mistreated by the media, the media seems to be giving Clinton an easy ride.  Where is the outrage about the tax returns, the library, the documents from the White House.  Seems to me that reporters should actually be asking the Clinton's questions not making others point out their faults.  If Obama had not released his tax returns wouldn't the media be hounding him on why?  Why does she get it so easy?  If she wants to take credit for the White House years as if she was co-president then ask her questions like she was the president.  I will not vote for Hillary and Bill no matter what.  I'm so sick of the Washington political game where favors are promised and back room deals are made and the American people get screwed in the end.  Reporters should be reporters not wimpering, cowering, stooges for the Clintons.  The media once again is failing to do its job just like the run up to the Iraq war.  Where are the real reporters?
Hillary gave Obama the benefit of th edoubt about being muslim. I believe he is a christian in his mind now.(His church needs scrutiny)but also that he was muslim. Not by his choice I believe but why lie about it. Like th ecanadian thing  there was no meeting . Ok was a meeting but not as was said on and on. JUst be open in beginning. I thought Hillary was and has been through whole thing accepting on his being muslim.I see Obama used muslim site to write letter about his muslim past. He does this stuff little at a time.In past he told reporters well he was around muslims after he said hadnt been.He did learn some but was not  practicing muslim. Little by little.but Farrakhan believes in him and that he's the messiah so who are we to argue.
When are the super delegates going to see the light and start stepping up to put an end to Hillary's destructiveness?  To all of you who are still uncommitted - does she really stand for the party you stand for?  Can you ever feel truly comfortable casting your vote for her?
I really think this is a good illustration in why its hard to really hold candidates liable for what surrogates say...anyone can say anything and it can be problematic (let's face we AlL regret saying things in our own lives).

I think you really do have to look for overall patterns...is there a consistent message of negativity or cheap shots versus isolated remarks.

Yes, its important to look at timing and/or whether a person gets canned, but really remarks like this happen all too often in campaigns.  Are we really going to pull each remark apart for the rest of the campaign?  I'd rather talk about issues (although some of the way the campaign does respond can speak to the candidate's character).

I take Mr. Johnson's apology (although I wish it had been faster) at his word.  Lets move on.

In terms of Mr. Wolfson, I agree with Baileigh above.  The Clinton campaign response drawing truly arbitrary distinctions, does hint at a double standard that is truly becoming a pattern, in my opinion.

Its one reason I'm supporting Obama 08.
Obama words are the same as all americans want for this country, pretty uplifting words but thats all they are, how do we accomplish what these words mean.
Obama words are the same as all americans want for this country, pretty uplifting words but thats all they are, how do we accomplish what these words mean.
Lets call for Howard Wolfson to depart as well...
I wonder how old some of these dems were when Bill was if office. Couldn't have been old enough to have to earn their own living, Because if they were they would be thankful to him after 8 years of Regain and 4 years of Bush 1. Our economy looked then awhole lot like it is today. I wonder how many remember the bill board showing our country's deficit growing thousands with each tick of the clock? Now is not the time for foolish ideals of a savior. We need someone to work hard and have the knowledge to know where to start. We need Clinton 2.
Ohhhh, now the MSM notices and is reporting about the double-standards being played when it comes to the Clintons. I just hope most intelligent voters/viewers/Americans realize that you guys are the ones who help fuel and perpetuate this propaganda.  If you would REPORT BOTH SIDES of the issues in an unbiased, fully researched, and truthful manner, then viewers wouldn't have to ask for retractions, and you guys wouldn't look like "rag" journalists playing to your own selfish agendas.
Look at it this way. One candidate corrects an error made on his behalf, the other agrees/disagrees and moves on. Obama showed class compared to the 2 experienced candidates. McCain lied and said he never met the man that smeared Obama!

Hillary can't have it both ways. Only people like patty say "don't hate the player hate the game" Which translates to hey the system is corrupt so who cares if someone takes advantage of it. This is the same logic that has been applied vigorously the past 7yrs.

Enough already, corruption should be exposed and ceased not excused and manipulated.
[The spin isn't working anymore Howard..go join the RNC when the campaign is over. McCain/Clinton 08 right?

--Ha!  She'll make it back to the WH one way or another.

**She may not be a monster, but she still scares the #%@$ out of me--with her win-at-all-costs not-what-the-people-want tactics!
Wolfson's excuse? "Bob Johnson is a supporter of ours"

I'm sorry, but that is just absolutely CLASSIC!  Well of course we aren't going to reject and denounce HIM!  He supports US!  Samantha Powers, she supports YOU!  She yeah, we'll hold HER accountable, but not Bob Johnson!
I think you get this Patty in SD but I'll say it anyway...

We GET that she and the game are the same thing.

Many of us intensely despise both.  We want to be part of a new game characterized by less machine--mow--over people--at--any--cost type of politics and more lets--truly--try--and--stay--on--the--issues politics.

If you represent a typical Hillary supporter, then I'm not sure you're doing your candidate any service.
