Revisiting Bob Johnson

Posted: Friday, March 07, 2008 12:11 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC's Mark Murray
On the conference call in which the Clinton campaign -- through their congressional supporters -- called for Obama to dismiss Samantha Power from his campaign, a reporter asked this question: What about how the Clinton campaign handled Bob Johnson's controversial remarks about Obama?

Remember, in January, Johnson -- the founder of BET and a Clinton backer -- made a comment about Obama and his youthful drug use before introducing Clinton at an event in South Carolina. Referring to the controversy about whether Bill and Hillary Clinton were injecting race into the Dem contest, Johnson said, "As an African American, I am frankly insulted that the Obama campaign would imply that we are so stupid that we would think Hillary and Bill Clinton, who have been deeply and emotionally involved in black issues, when Barack Obama was doing something in the neighborhood that I won't say what he was doing but he said it in his book." Johnson also compared Obama to Sidney Poitier's character in "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner."

On the very day that Johnson made that comment, the Clinton campaign issued a statement from Johnson. “My comments today were referring to Barack Obama's time spent as a community organizer, and nothing else," he said. "Any other suggestion is simply irresponsible and incorrect."

At an MSNBC debate two days later, Clinton stood by Johnson's words, despite the uproar they produced. "Well, Bob has put out a statement saying what he was trying to say and what he thought he had said. We accept him on his word on that."

It wasn't until four days after his initial remarks that Johnson apologized to Obama -- reversing his earlier explanation that he was talking about Obama's work as a community organizer. "I'm writing to apologize to you and your family personally for the un-called-for comments I made at a recent Clinton event," he said in a statement. "In my zeal to support Senator Clinton, I made some very inappropriate remarks for which I am truly sorry. I hope that you will accept this apology. Good luck on the campaign trail."

On the conference call today, Clinton communications director Howard Wolfson said there was a difference between Johnson and Power. "Bob Johnson is a supporter of ours," he said, "but he is not someone who advises [the campaign] on a daily basis." Wolfson added, "There is a difference."

There is also a difference of the speed in which the two campaigns responded to the two controversial comments.

Powers resigned.  Now Howard Wolfson should resign after his comment yesterday: "I for one do not believe that imitating Ken Starr is the way to win a Democratic primary election for president."
People, the Clintons are royalty, don't you know.  They are better than us average peasants.  It is Hillary's god given right to be President.  So to hell with who has won the most states, who has the delegate lead, and who is leading in the popular vote.

Just give her the damn Presidency you minions.
ok Patty - You, my dear, are an idiot!

Don't get me started on all the MISTAKES the Clinton camp has made...and I wouldn't classify them as rookies!  What excuse do you have for them?
There's another difference:  Ms. Power told the truth!
Is Obama trying to build a bridge back to the 90's?
The Clinton campaign runs all over the press and the press is afraid to stand up to them. They say she is treated harshley and the press goes along with it in the hopes to not look bad. They attack, imply, lie, and suggest and the press puts it out there. Where is the followup to the Canadian matter and the canadian government's saying that it was the Clintons who were winking not the Obama campaign. Its time for the press/media to point out lies and false statements rather than being the mud carrier for the campaigns. I was always told if you repeat a lie that you know is a lie you are as responsible as the liar. You want a fight so you can fill air time with "excitment". This is our country that is in play here shouldn't we be entitled a little trustworthy reporting.
Comebacks can be a good thing.  Coca Cola classic, comfort food, Godfather Part 2, Elvis '68.  Some comebacks are not so good. Britney Spears, Godfather Part 3, Elvis '76 (bless his heart) measles...and Hillary Clinton.  Please make her go away
Clinton will be exposed for the shrill harpy that she is.

This is another case of Hillary Clinton having the pot call the kettle black. She and her surrogates slander, smear, sleaze, and innuendo Sen. Obama. Then they get outraged when someone calls them on their lies. It is just too much! Look for some big fights at the convention regarding Florida and Michigan.
just one more example of Hillary wanting it both ways.
If Hillary Clinton is the democratic nominee I'm voting for Ralph Nader.
"Obama words are the same as all americans want for this country, pretty uplifting words but thats all they are, how do we accomplish what these words mean. "
---

Taken a look at Obama's Senate record relative to Clinton's lately?  No one who has done their homework (perhaps more time on the Libary of Congress website than commenting on news stories would help) can honestly say he has accomplished nothing.

Obama so out-classes Clinton, in every respect.

If Democrats want more of the Clintons, with their self-serving, dishonest, nasty ways, I will respect that (although it will sadden me greatly).  But I have no doubt we can do better.
having been a political junkie since the 60's barak obama is the only candidate that has inspired me since jfk. I am a senior citizen caucasion woman who unlike many others in my demographic wants this country to move forward not backwards. the vicious unfounded and not so subtle manipulation of the clinton campaign has disgusted me. I would like to see a woman in the white house but not that woman. Since their programs are virtually the same re:health care the economy, why would anyone want someone as divisive as mrs. clinton running this country. It is PRECISLEY because of the dirty tactics that she has shown that she has made huge enemies in the senate and if she becomes the candidate every program she supports will be rejected. The republicans would love to have her run then McCain will win and  we will have another four years of the ugliness that we have had under. bush and cheney. I have never seen anything really get accomplished in this country when you have someone that does not inspire anything but distaste. So i will go along with the younger voters just like the 60's when we stopped a war, got a president to resign and restored the admiration of this country in the rest of the world. GO OBAMA!
So, when you folks take over the White House and Congress, are you going to be able to get together on anything besides tattooing a little elephant on all the Republicans' foreheads and re-locating them?

You've got me a little concerned here.
Say No to Bush/Clinton/Bush/Clinton !!!

USA is not a monarchy.

Go Obama '08.
Johnson was stating a fact and he is not an advisor. case closed.
Let's call her a poopy head next or worse the Boogie Man!

Grow up Clinton campaign, grow up!
I agree that it was wrong for Power to call Clinton a "monster,' but if the Clintons think she should resign for that, Howard Wolfson should resign for likening Obama to Ken Starr.
It's always "different" for the Clintons!!
They don't play by the rules, ANY rules!

A PAID ADVISOR of HER CAMPAIGN, CALLED Obama "Ken Starr" which to democrats is A FOUR LETTER WORD!  HIS COMMENTS WERE TOTALLY OUT OF LINE!!!

I THOUGHT HILLARY WAS THE CANDIDATE OF SOLUTIONS!!!
Does her behavior, actions and reactions seem like she is seeking solutions in this situation??  Did she take the Presidential road, for unity, for rising above the fray, and seeking a peaceful resolution to a minor infraction??  I don't see any actions of  sensible "commander in chief" with this latest outrage of Hillary Clinton!

She should come to a SOLUTION OVER THIS SCANDAL WITH HER PAID DAILY ADVISOR MAKING DISGUSTING COMMENTS ABOUT SENATOR OBAMA!!!   She should follow her OUTCRIES for DISMISSAL....of JOHNSON...and DISMISS HER OWN PAID CAMPAIGN ADVISOR!!!!!

WILL SHE WALK THE WALK??
IS SHE TRULY THE CANDIDATE FOR "SOLUTIONS FOR CHANGE!!"
HOW CAN SHE SCREAM ABOUT BEING CALLED A MONSTER BY AN UNPAID VOLUNTEER CAMPAIGN WORKER, WHEN HER OWN PAID ADVISOR HAS DONE THE SAME THING????
iS THIS PRESIDENTIAL LEADERSHIP ON HER PART??
HOW WILL SHE LEAD A COUNTRY WHEN SHE CAN'T CONTROL HER OWN ADVISORS???
WHEN SHE CAN'T EVEN ADMONISH her paid campaign advisors MONSTROUS RHETORIC AND BEHAVIOR!!!
Who is in CHARGE???
Who is accountable...
in the Clinton campaign.

Hillary Clinton ...for heavens sake!
Senator Clinton is outraged?  Women should be outraged by Senator Clinton's outrage.

Senator Clinton and her campaign have played no end of dirty tricks.  Senator Clinton calls me and millions like me deluded and her campaign refers to us as "cult followers."  But hey, we are just public citizens, right?  Obviously, Senator Clinton thinks insulted us is just dandy.  Her campaign can freely (without rebuke) compare us to those tragic people who died because of Jim Jones.  But, heaven forbid a woman on Senator Obama's campaign call her a name!

Shame on you Senator Clinton.  I will have compassion for your turmoils when you treat others with the respect they deserve -- that by the way, includes me and the millions of other women who do not think you are the best candidate.  Although you and your campaign surrogates glory in telling us we are not misogynistic self-hating, delusional, kool-aid drinking cult-followers.  My, my, doesn't the Clinton campaign let the insults fly?

I suppose the Clintons believe it is perfectly appropriate to keep on attacking those of us who are not in the public arena and have no microphone to defend ourselves.  Thanks again, Senator Clinton -- I certainly expect you will keep the insults right on coming.
Now that she has resigned Obama supporters are calling for the Clinton camp to apologize for saying that Obama was engaging in Ken Starr like tactics.  There is however a couple of differences:

1. Obama has been the one saying all along that he will run a different type of campaign, would not engage in name-calling, and would avoid personal attacks.

2. The comparison to Ken Starr was based on Obama talking about "land deals" and "personal finances" which were part of what Ken Starr was hounding the Clintons about.

3. The comment about Clinton was made about Hillary overall and was personal and was also an insult to the voters of Ohio while the Ken Starr reference was about  a set of behaviors and actions and not about Obama as a whole.

And as for Bob Johnson??--He is a SUPPORTER and not the lead advisor on foreign policy.  Pretty big difference.
When is MSNBC going to put NAFTA-gate and Peter Paul on the storyline?
With his "ken star" attacks Is Obama trying to build a bridge back to the 90's?
It's strange.  It's almost as if Obama supporters outnumber Clinton supporters 10 to 1 on the web.  Anyway, I think it's absolutely immature that every time the Obama makes a misstep, the media has to look back and say "oh but what about when Hillary Clinton did..."  Seriously, if you support Obama, good for you.  But why is his admitted drug use in the past a taboo issue.  Personally I'm offended as an African Amerian man by the suggestion that drug use calls into quesetion a person's race.  Last I checked, millions of suburban white kids and adults all accross this country are tripping out on methamphetamines.  I don't remember the media being so quick to protect Bill Clinton over his youthful marijuana use.  Obama constantly refers to having superior judgment on past issues such as Iraq.  Don't his political opponents have the same right to question his judgment when using drugs in the past.  He is constantly sheilded by the press and in many cases they're doing the fighting for him.  It's as though the press is attempting with this issue, his middle name, etc. to insulate white america from all of the things that color their opinion of him.  I'm OK with that as long as it's done accross the board.  However, there is not an even handedness to the press' approach on this. Wake up guys.  Don't let your unwaivering support for Barrack Obama blind you to the truth.
Obviously those of you in the media are intimidated by the Clintons. The get one of you suspended and the rest of you run for cover. In the past the press was considered an honorable profession and reporters were not entertainers. Guess those days are gone. Why not investigate, research and question. You just repeat and deny responsibility. Come on do your job.
McCain is McShame and HRC is a TRAITOR TO HER PARTY FOR SAYING THAT ONLY SHE AND McShame where actually "qualified" to run this country. I guess if you are part of their exclusive club. Yes, you have Mrs. Cindy McShame older version of Paris Hilton...pill popping, husband chaser done good. HRC husband was a skirt chaser who married a "strong" woman done good. Ah...yes the kind of EXPERIENCE WE NEED. Trust me she is in this for HERSELF not her PARTY or her COUNTRY.
OBAMA 08
Stop being bias in your coverage of both Obama and Clinton and give the public a balance information about the duo. Otherwise you will be left with nodody to watch and listening to your Station.
As for Clinton camp, if you don`t stop deceiving voters very soon new party members like me will quit and in the end you will give the Republican the victory in November because they were bold and sincere enough to tell the voters what they stand for. To be forewarned is to be forearmed.
patty,sd,ca.

I don't have a problem with either the "playa" or the "game."  My problem is with the Slime Politics that is the Clinton Machine.

You must be okay with how many people have lost their jobs because of NAFTA, and the fact that BOTH Clinton's supported it.  You are probably okay with the fact that if HRC wins the Democratic Primary, McCain will be President.  Also, sadly enough, the Iraq war.  You must be okay with the BLOOD that has been shed by countless Children, innocent People, and American Soldiers.  Hillary, and McCain approved the war, Obama did not.  Not only did Obama not approve the war, but gave a DETAILED description why it would be wrong; more than just a speach in 2002.   But I guess the question is....  Do you HATE the "PLAYA", that is Obama, because you obviously have no problem with Hillary's GAME?

With regards to Tony Rezko, Obama had absolutely nothing to do with that.  Have you not known anyone who has done soemthing bad or wrong?  Even better, has Hillary?

She accused Obama of being a drug dealer, a muslim, Karl Rove, George Bush, and Ken Starr.  She's far far worse.
what is funny to me is I read all these blogs supporting sen. Clinton most come from states she says herself are not important. and her own staff said they do not care about. its the media who is running these campains make no mistake about it. She controlls the press. watch msnbc ,cnn, and see how many neg. things that are brought up about sen.Obama and how many about sen. clinton. the fact is that about 80% is neg. about obama even thier quests are mainly clinton supporters. anyone that flat out says that she doesn't care who leads in the public votes she still plans on winning the whitehouse. you really think this kinda person is really going to fight for the american people wake up. the only thing she cares for is winning. and for the people who says she is one of us answer this can you let yourself barrow 5 million dollars. she is not on of us.
Poor Patty/sd/ca,

Are you too stupid to realize that the Clinton camp referred to Obama as Ken Starr, not the other way around.  Or, have you been seduced by satan (HRC) into actually thinking this.  Furthermore, I doubt Obama would want to bridge anything back to 90's.  I mean, Lewinsky, Watergate, NAFTA, etc. etc.  I think the Clinton's have earned that reputation without any bridges.
With regards to Tony Rezko, Obama had absolutely nothing to do with that.  Have you not known anyone who has done soemthing bad or wrong?  Even better, has Hillary?

RIGHT.Just like his rookie advisor didn't talk to Canada.
I don't see the connection here...
Democrats - pay heed!!!

I'm an independent - white male, 40+, married, 2 kids

If Obama is your nominee, you will have my vote - otherwise I'll be voting for McCain

The Clintons represent everything that I loathe in American politics - I will NEVER vote for HRC

So the choice is yours . . . if you think you can win the general election without the independent vote . . . . go ahead and let Clinton steal the nomination with back room superdelagate deals and legal challenges . . . if you do, you will deserve what you get
As a lifelong Democrat and "former" supporter of Bill Clinton, I think I'm just about to change my registration to another party.  Hillary has destroyed any chance of a Democratic president.  She will galvonize the Republican base (look at what's happening already).  Consertives who initially were not for McCain are now rallying behind him and he doesn't have to do anything to get it.  It's once thing to challenge and debate on the issues, and I'll even grant experience (not in the way she spins it though).  But her personal attacks on Senator Obama has probably lost her the African American vote and a chance to pick off some the southern red states should she win the nomination.  She has alienated all but the same regular demographics within the Democratic party.  The party is broken and I fear there is no way to bring it back together.  We had the Republican broken, but because of the Democratic mess, they are getting back together while we continue to mess it it up.  Howard Dean and the DNC should all take the blame.  The way Dems award the delegates, FL & MI (although they knew the penalty), allowing registered Republicans to vote in Democratic primaries (such as Texas), is a big reason we are in the mess we are in now.  No matter what happens with Fl and MI, there is going to be a feeling of being cheated.  If the DNC holds to their rules (BTW agreed upon by all candidates at the time including Hillary), people are going to feel cheated.  If you allow them to revote (especially with Hillary doing all the pushing), people are going to feel cheated and will set a precedent for States in the future who want to be more of a player tomove up their dates, there is nothing good that come of it.  We are going to have a broken convention and a broken party.  At this point, no matter who you support, Clinton or Obama, more than likely if your candidate does not win, the other side will stay at home or vote Republican.  Dems are going to lose in November and this is lifelong Dem saying it.  We always find a way to mess it up.
Howard Wolfson called Obama Kenneth Starr.

Kenn Star = Monster in Clinton Circles

Howard Wolfson MUST resign
HILLARY ALSO WENT ON THE ATTACK FOR THE REPORTER WHO SAID HILLARY WAS "PIMPING HER DAUGHTER".  THE MAN WAS SUSPENDED!

NOW THIS!

PEOPLE:  STOP GIVING UP YOUR POWER TO HILLARY!
Julie, you are so right. MSNBC has gotten so bias against Hillary, there now as bad as Fox. I used to watch Keith Oberman, but he has gotten as bad as Chris Matthews.
Paul, Yes- Hillary has known somebody that has done something wrong remember Whitewater and Rosewood and Peter Paul- who the media will not present to the public.
The Clintons have the media in their pockets.  Since Sen Obama is the less of the two evils what has the media to loose by doing things against him?  The media is definitely scared of Hillary Clinton and they proved it many times.  I blogged Anderson 360 of CNN to ask a question about the Sen Clinton being called to trail and they dismissed it and would not respond.
I find it interesting that no news organization shows the Clinton Resko photograph were Bill and Hillary is in between Resko for a photo shoot, but they continue to show photos of Obama with Resko. You guys and gals can do a better job then that.
The Clinton's campaign has went gutter. They will do or say anything to win an election even it means splitting up the party. She should be saying shame on you shame on you to her self. She is always ready to cry foul but don't mine dishing out dirty and then think people should feel sorry for her. Well all this underhandiveness will sure cath up to her. The American people are intelligent and won't buy into her tactics.
Chris NY NY - "Actually Mark, I don't see a timing difference.  Power made her comments on Monday.  That is four days ago."

So why not include the days in which he had initially denied his remarks were inappropriate and offensive?

Those days that he and the Clinton campaign were standing by their word, insistant that the remarks were being misinterpreted were on the calendar too!

Why do Hillary and her supporters get to frame every issue as they would like the public to view it?  The Clinton's have and continue to inject hateful speech and ideas into this campaign; yet at every turn they pronounce themselves as the victim.  The Clinton campaign has been utterly transparent in the manner in which they go about dividing this party and soiling a good mans name.  Clinton is Hipocrisy.
Calling a candidate a "monster" after they got their butt whooped on March 4, 2008 and not winning the nominations is totally uncalled for.

When Obama ran 11 victories in a row, nobody called him a Monster on the record.  The Clintons regrouped after getting their butt whoop.

Like I say, Obama is a 'softy' and Americans don't like softies, they like fighters.

Clinton is a "fighter" and McCain is a "fighter"

They are the only two who need to fight for the presidency.
DJ in Texas, you are so right!  The power for the White House is going to destroy the party.  The DNC has no way of resolving Michigan and Florida and a re-do with no money from the party or the state is not going to happen.  Why not just split the delegates 50/50? No one suffers-
The Clinton's will never change - old school politics are what they are all about - get ahead at any cost - this makes her look so presidential dosent it - someone make her go away !!!!!
Let me get this straight. In the Democratic Party, if you call someone a monster (an imaginary creature usually having various human and animal parts), you have to quit, but if call someone Karl Rove (a reprehensible creature usually having few human scruples) or Ken Starr (a real creature who led an escalating witch hunt for purely partisan purposes), you see no repercussions.

Change is needed, brothers and sisters, change is needed. Obamma '08!
look Anti Reaganess Big Talkers, if you don't like msnbc then don't blog on their website. I don't like Clinton News Network (CNN)so i don't blog on their website. You Clinton supporters are just like her. CRYBABIES
One of the theories that some of our opportunistic TV pundits have put forward to whyHillary came back is "Limbaugh effect" where the foul mouthed radio talk show host asked republicans to vote for Hillary to create confusion amongst democrats according to him.
Real Limbaugh effect in my opinion is not republicans crossing over to vote for a democrat. Its the white middle aged mans reluctance to vote for an Obama. Its a fact that proven over . Makes me wonder-if Obama cannot even win support from so called liberals how is going to win the general election? He failed to win a single big state bar his home state of IL. Its true that he has energized a large (very liberal and visible especially on internet) democratic base but is that enough to win the gen election-guess not. And so far I have only factored in his backgound as a criteria for his viability.many more questions are yet to asked. If you have watched any of the debates,I dont think you needed Saturday Night live to tell us that media has given Obama a soft gloved treatment so far compared to what Clinton had to go through. And I am not even talking about the obviously biased MSNBC here. Real scrutiny is inevitable and looks like he is having a hard time handling it. If you think Clintons 3 AM ad is negative “you havent seen nothing yet" and wait till he get the nomination and see what republicans will do to him.
Even I hope that America has changed enough to see him in the white house but the answer so far has been NO NOT YET. I can understand the passion behind extreme liberals"hate Hillary' and "Obama or die" attitude but I dont think that healthy for their party. If they dont want to see another Bush term, its time to get real and stop hating Hillary who is their only viable choice.I dont think that she is guarenteed to win against MCCain either(unless the extreme wright wing evangelicals stay home) but amongst moderates,I think she has a fighting chance
Hey, it took another WOMEN to see Hillary the way she really is. A monster. and a 2 faced one at that. She tossed poor women under the bus in the 90's to have them get off of welfare and the now she is counting on them to get her and her husban back in.

She stood by as Bill had his moments with other women but as soon as people found out she stomped on the Flowers, ran over the Lowinsky and the list could go on.

Yep, Powers was spot on. Ture it was bad timeing for the Obama camp but Powers only spock from the heart.

Hillary reminds me or Profs Umbridge in the 5th Harry Potter Book. Sticky sweet but evil to the core.
Guys, everyone just calm down. The Clintons are proven liers, cheaters, and filth.  Did you REALLY expect anything else from them.  It's just the same old people doing the same old thing, just like Obama has mentioned.  Let them continue to make asses of themselves.  The Clinton campaign will go down in history as the BIGGEST LOSER campaign of all. Full of scandals and lies, just like old Bill's Presidency.

Obama will not sink to her level.  He doesn't need to.  He is going to win, because she cannot get the pledged delegate lead.  Clinton camp know this.  They have nothing to loose.  Hillary already is hated by most of the country, and we all know Penn and Wolfson are total bafoons.  So let them continue their charade, and lets just sit back and enjoy the show!

It will be interesting to see where she turns to after the election.  Does she really think ANYONE will have ANY respect for her as a senator?

Fat chance!!!

Obama 08!!!!!

p.s.
What is even funnier and more pathetic, is how Hillary continues to beg her supporters for money, even though she KNOWS that she will not win!!!  They are giving her their hard earned money for NOTHING!!!
Oh, yeah, I guess she probably wants to pay her self back for the 5 mill she loaned herself!

SUCKERS!!
