Reporter stands by work

Posted: Friday, March 07, 2008 5:32 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From MSNBC's Adam Verdugo
The reporter who set off a political firestorm that led to the resignation of an Obama senior advisor today is standing by her reporting.

"Of course, I'm saddened from a personal point of view, because she's actually a very intelligent, articulate woman and her heart seems to be in the right place," Gerri Peev said today in an interview on MSNBC with Norah O'Donnell. "I don't know of any journalist worth their salt who would have pulled her remark. We're not in the business to self-censor or to censor ourselves."

According to Peev, the interview with Samantha Power was initially arranged to publicize a recent book authored by the Obama advisor. During the interview, Power received a phone call from another "special advisor" to the campaign.

"I fiddled around with the tape recorder, and she kindly waited for me to switch it back on," Peev said. "So she knew it was going to be recorded."

Peev continued the interview with Power and notes that she, "described a little bit of the context of the phone call and that things hadn't gone so well in Ohio for the campaign that day." Power told Peev "We f***** up in Ohio," referring to the campaign.

When pressed about why she published a quote, which Power had called off-the record, Peev responded: "I don't know what the convention is in American journalism, but in Britain here we have very firm rules about the fact that generally, you establish whether a conversation or interview is on or off the record before it actually happens.

"She made some off-the-cuff remarks which were on the record. She even waited for the tape to start recording and then I think once she noticed that they were quite controversial she tried to withdraw just that very remark about Hillary allegedly being a monster."

Peev said that she had received an "unofficial clarification phone call" from the Obama campaign, but of course, that conversation was "off-the-record."

Bunch of rookies.

For all those Obama supporters, Sen. Clinton said she was TOUGH and a FIGHTER and she's showing it. Stop whinning, your candidate has messed up and he's paying the price GET OVER IT this is politics!

So now both the Canadian and British medias have involved themselves in this race for the distinct purpose of bring the smear upon Barack Obama.
--I'm just waiting for the Danish media to depict a political cartoon with Obama as Muhammad.
"We're not in the business to self-censor or to censor ourselves."

Since when??? If what passes for journalism isn't due to self-censorship then it has to be due to pure slipshod laziness. Well, that answers one of my questions.
A week of name calling...Obama is like Ken Starr, Hillary the monster...meanwhile I am still outraged over Iraq, lack of healthcare, corporate greed, oil prices...etc. etc.

Let's remember what is truly important here media...are you going to hash out this story until you draw blood? The woman resigned.  It is done.
america is afraid to elect aAfrican american male to become president. white folk has been leadrs forever and have made several mistakes we are not ready for a white female  to run this country she will only be out front while her husband will be in the back ground calling the shots.
we suffer in this country. our affliction is to be politically correct in all our statements.
if we want to call someone a monster do so. we still have the right to free speech. but we dont, this lady made the remark.own it, dont be afraid. if you are! then she should never had said the remark about Mrs. Clinton. Obama wants to be a clean candidate. that is great, that is something the republicans believe to be a weak point.  it's obviously working for mr. Obama. he made that choice. if wants to fire an aid then let it so. Or how about we let the person explain the remark. It is time for the Democrats to let the people know what the republicans are doing to this country. but they are being politically correct.
our country may be in for the worst economic state.will no party stop Americas financial bleeding.
Its a shame the lady had to lose her position in the Obama campaign for saying the truth.  Does anyone not believe the Hillary Clinton will do anything to secure the nomination including the personal destruction of
senator Obama and the total destruction of the Democratic Party.  She is now attempting to destroy Obama with a campaign which will give Senator McCain all He needs to win the election in November.  There is no chance she can now win the nomination outright.  I believe she is hoping to somehow steal the nomination in the "smoked filled back room super delgates.
I agree with the reporter's decision to use the quote. If a person knowingly talks to a reporter, those comments can ethically be used even if the interviewee says "this is off the record". I have no doubt that the Obama adviser knew this and wanted that comment reported. A good rule of thumb when giving an interview - if you don't want certain comments used, don't say them to a reporter!
monster, definitions from dictionary.com

1. a legendary animal combining features of animal and human form or having the forms of various animals in combination, as a centaur, griffin, or sphinx.
2. any creature so ugly or monstrous as to frighten people.
3. any animal or human grotesquely deviating from the normal shape, behavior, or character.
4. a person who excites horror by wickedness, cruelty, etc.

I'd say it's about 3 of 4 there...
This is what you get with no experience. It takes another country to step in and report the news. The bias media here would never say anything against barry. But lets forget about the name calling, what about this Iraq withdrawal plan he crafted just to get votes. He still can't make up him mind about what is best.
how stupid do you think we are, oops I didnt mean to get someone in trouble. opps we didnt mean to let the nafta meeting slip even thought we didnt hear until after the ohio , texas that clinton reps. had the same meeting opps. The press is getting good at stearing the campains in the direction they choose to go. Someone can loose 12 of 15 races but all you heard was how sen. Clinton has the momentom. only in america the press can have thier head in the sand and say we know whats going on. I do not care anymore but quit treating us like we are stupid.
Why should she have to resign over that remark.  Its true that Hillary is a monster and a born one at that.  At least Obama's campaign is truthful, which is more than I can say for Clintons.  By the way, Howard Wolfson has been involved with the shady Clintons for a long time now.  I dont put any stock into anything he says.  Another example of a paid Clinton staffer that probably knows all the Clinton's shady dealing of the past and gets hush money thrown at him on a regular basis.  Maggie Williams you can say the same about.  She was the one who cleaned out Vince Foster's office under Hillary Clintons directive after he was found dead.  The Clinton Criminal Campaign of 2008.
Double standard.  Please journalists out there finally call on Senator Clinton to apologize for all of her denigrating remarks made about Senator Obama's supporters.  Is it just fine for Senator Clinton to call millions of Americans "delusional?"  Is it just fine for her and her campaign surrogates to demean, belittle and ridicule us simply because we prefer Senator Obama?  Oh, and yes, some of you have also joined in on that "insult the voter" bandwagon.

It is so wonderful to be insulted by so many.  It is so pleasant to be compared to those poor, pathetic people who died because of Jim Jones.  Of course, it is difficult for the millions of us to spin you in the media.  We cannot demand fair treatment.  Obviously, we don't have that sort of access.  But, maybe -- just maybe -- you could stand up for us once in awhile.

Just because we are inspired, reinvigorated and involved in the political process doesn't mean we are easily deluded morons.  Indeed, a priori, it is much more likely that millions of Americans are voting, organizing and donating because Senator Obama offers us the opportunity and shows us that our actions can change America for the better.

This is a movement to get this Country moving once more in the right direction.  Senator Clinton's only response to the millions of new participants in the process is to insult us.  Is this the appropriate response of someone who wants to be the President of the entire United States of America?

Please ask Senator Clinton to show us the same respect she demands everyone else show her.
So if you must state that a conversation is "off the record" before it starts in order for the "reporter" to honor your request, how do you initiate an "off the record" request for an "off the record" conversation.  I guess you can't, since the reporter reported she had an "off the record" conversation with the Obama campaign giving an "off the record" clarification.

Reporters just love gotchas; much easier to report than analysis or nuance.

Since the interview was to publicize a book shouldn't she at least plug the book?
If Senator Clinton is elected President, which of her freqently changing personalities and moods exhibited day to day in the debates and in the campaign will awake at 3 A.M. in the White House?  Give me the grace under pressure and wisdom and political courage of Senator Obama in comparison any time and place.
It's not the name calling that worries me. It's his lack of experience in making tough decisions. He crafted a plan to withdraw from Iraq to get votes and may not be able to stand by it? He has been telling so many things and having someone to dig his rear out that I'm fed up.
The woman (Power) needs to be his running mate. Sounds like she is a expert at "calling it like it is". Hillary is very much like that hothead running for the Republican nomination. She cannot take it, but boy can she dish it out. If I was a Hillary supporter I would be ashamed and embarrassed about how she handles pressure.
I want Howard Wolfson fired!!!! Clinton has to get rid of him for calling Obama, Ken Starr. What the h*** is going on in this country. I hope that the country won't regret it when she is elected. Things won't be the same as the 90's.
Obama has to understand that Democratic voters love scoundrels.  They loved Bill Clinton despite his scandalous behavior and lying under oath and extra-marital affairs with countless women.  Obama cannot win if he tries to maintain the high ground in this campaign.  That may appeal very well to Republican and Independent voters --- but not with Democratic voters.  They want ‘down & dirty, gutter’ politics.  They want lying and gross mischaracterizations.  They want DIRTY TRICKS.   Obama is going to have to take off the white gloves and revert to Chicago-style ward politics if he wants to win this nomination.  Anything less the Democratic voters will not support.   Decent politicians finish last in Democratic politics.
Hillary IS a monster.  She will tromp on anyone in her way to the White House.  Decevious, and dishonest could also be adjectives attached to Hill/Bill.
If Hill/Bill steel this election through their well-seasoned use of trickery and pressure to count FL and MI it will certainly make my vote choice easier.  John McCain will suddenly look a lot better.  Hillary with her sleezy husband are SHAMELESS.  As deceptive and dishonest as the Clinton's are, why would this nation benefit from their return to the White House.  Great example is the NAFTA/Canada which cannot even qualify as
spin!  It was blatently dishonest and Ohio and TX fell for it!  I hope when the general election comes around her name is not on the ticket, unless of course she chooses to leave it on despite DNC rules!

Not a very nice reporter. She said "off the record".  The reporter should have honored that.
I just saw a "Monster" (job website) ad at the top of the webpage.  MSNBC should apologize! ;)

Personally, I call Hillary much worse every day, or every hour, and I'm NOT apologizing.
Little Miss Sunshine understands what 'off the record' means. I think this is standard operating procedure across all boarders but hey, what better way of injecting yourself into the best political season ever?

Maybe little miss sunshine should have asked real questions. Hillary needs to answer a few questions as a candidate. Let's separate what her husband did and ask her, WHAT are her foreign policy experience within those 35 years?

What critical meeting has she led abroad?
What foreign president or prime minster has she worked with to revolve nuclear crisis?
What foreign president or prime minister called the white house to speak with her regarding a crisis?
What call has she taken at 3AM regarding national security?

Where's the white house furniture?
Where are those tax returns?
Who is her husband now working with overseas? How many terrorist donated to her campaign?

WE get confused by the name Clinton and allot Hillary Bill's wins but she needs to answer some questions. What has she done in those 35 years that adds up to WASHINGTON Presidential experience?
I am much more concerned with Limbaugh's request to Republicans to vote for Hillary and distort the democratic votes on Mar 4th, 2008, to prolong the democratic primary's choice of nominee than I am with this advisor's poor choice of words.  Her words were out of frustration with Hillary Clinton's inability to care about the democract party and the dirty tricks of Hillary's campaign directed towards both race and religion.  Limbaugh's remarks were reprehensible and a perversion of the election process and these remarks were echoed on Tuesday on MSN albeit in a softer tone.  I know people who want to leave the USA because of the "dirty tricks" in this election.  They don't believe their vote counts and they don't believe that this country is the Land of the Free any longer.  The US cannot be the Land of the Free until we are free of hatred and prejudice towards all races and all religions.  Now the Pennsylvania primary is closed to both Republicans and Independents (who were crossing over and voting for Obama) so Hillary is supposed to be the "easy win".  Hillary is not the people's choice but does not have the honor or grace to admit the election results were off due to the Republican's request for votes for Hillary.  Boo Hillary.
Don't be too rough on Samantha Powers, Barak, she has bravely stated what many of us have felt about Hillary for a long time. She has no conscience and deserves no sympathy. She has had ample opportunity to condemn recent malicious statements made by her or her aides about you, but will not do so. She might just start with NAFTA. She is a perfect example of a loser!
Barack's middle name is Hussain. Hillary is a monster. Bill does play around. Why can't the Democrats admit to what is true?
Tucker Carlson just ripped the UK reporter, Gerri Peev telling her that UK has lower standards in journalism than we do in the States.  ARE YOU KIDDING? If "off the record" is to be told before someone makes statements in the UK, and saying after the fact that you want it off the record, is how they do it in the UK, who is Tucker Carlson to tell her she has low standards and accusing her of being mean spirited.   CHRIS MATTHEWS AND KEITH OLBERMAN WERE ACTUALLY REPORTING FALSE STATEMENTS ATTRIBUTED TO HILLARY CLINTON, AND HER CAMPAIGN.  THEY WERE OUTRIGHT LIES.  I SAW WHAT HILLARY CLINTON SAID ON 60 MINUTES, AND IT WAS NOT WHAT CHRIS HAS BEEN SAYING ALL DAY TUESDAY, DURING ELECTION RESULTS, AND THE NEXT DAY ON HIS SHOW.  HE FLAT OUT MISQUOTED HER.
I WATCHED CBC THE NATIONAL, AND THE NAFTA-GATE WAS ALL ABOUT OBAMA'S CAMP, NOT CLINTON CAMP AS KEITH WAS TELLING HIS AUDIENCE AND YOUR POSTING MISLEAD OBAMA SUPPORTERS.   IF THIS IS THE HIGH STANDARD FOR THE U.S. JOURNALISTS, PLEASE YOU HAVE NO ROOM TO CRITIZE THE U.K. FOR REPORTING TRUE QUOTES.

IF OBAMA DIDN'T THINK IT WAS INAPPROPRIATE OF POWER
TO COMMENT AS SHE DID, THEN HE DIDN'T HAVE TO ACCEPT HER RESIGNATION.

THE CANADIAN PARLIMENT LADY WHO CALLED BUSH A MORON
WAS FIRED.

THE MEDIA IS TRYING TO GET THAT HALO BACK ON OBAMA'S HEAD.  NOTICE THAT HE IS STAYING OUT OF QUESTIONING RANGE OF REPORTERS.

From an article by Marc Cooper of the Huffington Post about Samantha Power:

"Power was rightfully awarded the Pulitzer for her finely written and downright horrifying book "A Problem From Hell" which, in macabre detail, describes the calculated indifference of the Clinton administration when 800,000 Rwandans were being systematically butchered. The red phone rang and rang and rang again. I don't know where Hillary was then. But her husband and his entire experienced foreign policy team - from the brass in the Pentagon to the congenitally feckless Secretary of State Warren Christopher - just let it ring.

And as more than one researcher has amply documented the case, the bloody paralysis of the Clinton administration in the face of the Rwandan genocide owed not at all to a lack of information, but rather to a lack of will. A reviewer of Power's book for The New York Times, perhaps summed it up best, saying that the picture of Clinton that emerges from this reading is that of an "amoral narcissist."

Former Canadian General Romeo Dallaire, who commanded the UN forces in Rwanda at the time of the genocide, tells us a similar story in his own memoir. General Dallaire recounts how, at the height of the Rwandan holocaust, he got a phone call from a Clinton administration staffer who wanted to know how many Rwandans had already died, how many were refugees and how many were internally displaced. Writes Dallaire: "He told me that his estimates indicated that it would take the deaths of 85,000 Rwandans to justify the risking of the life of one American soldier." Eventually, ten times that many would die. And our response? A handful of years later, at a photo-op stopover in Kigali airport, Bill Clinton bit his lip and said he was sorry.

Therein resides the richest and saddest irony of all. Samantha Power has actually lived the sort of life that Hillary Clinton's campaign staff has, for public consumption, invented for its candidate. Though not quite 40 years old, Power has spent no time on any Wal-Mart boards but has rather dedicated her entire adult life rather tirelessly to championing humanitarian causes. She has spoken up when others were silent. She took great personal risks during the Balkan wars to witness and record and denounce the carnage (She reported that Bill Clinton intervened against the Serbs only when he felt he was losing personal credibility as a result of his inaction. "I'm getting creamed," Power quoted the then-President saying as he fretted over global consternation over his own hesitation to act).

We gave Power the Pulitzer for exposing the, well, monstrous indifference of the Clinton administration as it stared unblinkingly and immobile into the face of massive horror. But we give her a kick in the backside and throw her out the door when she has the temerity to publicly restate all that in one impolite word. Monstrous, indeed."

I am not saying it was right or wrong for her to quote her remark.  But I believe that when you deal with journalist you make sure you know what you are saying. I believe she knew exactly what she was doing.
This is off the story. But if you have do overs in MI and FL....then the case could be made to have some of the caucuses done over. They give an unfair advantage to Barry voters. You know they fly people in from NYC and lock Hillary voters out. Have one or two do overs get ready for more.
First, let me admit a bias. I do think she is a monster!  Second, Sen. Obama has got to learn the Clinton style...let your surrogates make the outrageous allegation and then, when the press asks you for comment, say something like "Well no, probably not, but, then, you never know, there might be something to it...but no, I don't want to comment on that." (There are, of course, scores of variations on that. Making comments like this is an art form that the Clintons have perfected. Hillary is like the Wizard of Oz’s wicked witch - she plans, she cackles, then she sends her surrogate monkeys to execute her evil plans. But Hillary may just overplay her hand. If this starts to get really ugly and the superdelegates realize that she really is a monster that will wreck the Party before she'll accept defeat, then they might come to the same conclusion that the townspeople did about Frankenstein’s monster, announce their support for Obama and end this thing.
Sure, Gerri.  Your concern and affection for Samantha is touching.
this is not an issue ... an unoffical advisor calling Hillary a monster hardly seems worth reporting.

First Canada and now this UK reporter--makes me wonder if there isn't some sort of international smear campaign going on.

Indeed it seems that the tactics of  Hillary’s campaign are, uh . . . monstrous.
You just can't trust reporters or News Papers...

"NYT" Weapon of Mass Destruction
Now before everyone from the Hillary camp or the Obama camp starts with the name calling, remember the enemy is the Republicans. I suspect some of the posts are Republicans in disguise trying to inflame each side. If you disagree with a policy or a campaign tactic say so but leave the emotional name calling out of it. We both want the same thing, a Democrat in the White House.
What I would like to know is why the news media is now terrified to criticize Hillary for spreading false rumors about the Canada Nafta thing when in the end it was her camp that committed the foul. However, this lie was allowed to set in, tainted an election day, and now no one has the guts to clean it up with the truth. Maybe Oiberman will, but I can't think of anyone else with that much integrity.
I agree with Samantha Power, Hillary Clinton is a MONSTER and will stoop to any level to win...Even if it means destroying the Democratic Party by endorsing John McCain
http://www.cbc.ca/canada/story/2008/03/07/clinton-nafta-gate.html

Regarding the story that was on First Read yesterday.
Good luck on getting  any more interviews, Ms. Peev.
What is the big deal for god's sake?

Journalists, get to reporting some of the real news, real facts on things such as who influences who (or whom, whatever)---e.g., the Clinton post-presidency money and the hiding which has avoided 'vetting', McCain's influencers and handlers, etc.  I have big problems with the integrity and judgment of both Clinton and McCain.  Journalists:  Do your work, and back off of the 'oh, look a fight' crap.
What is wrong with the comment, Monster is not as bad as beint called the Bitch of All Bitches!
I personally think Obama should quit this race, just go back to representing your state in the senate. Yeah! yeah!! he is quitter and all that crap, but i do not think we deserve him at all. Not in the bit. You see, we are so dumb beyond comprehension that Clinton is actally counting on our stupidity. If we ever showed any sign of intelligence, she will scorn us for it. When she declared that she will be running for the presidency, she said, i,m running to win and boy! she is running to win. I wish Donald Trump enters the race and tell us he intends to put us first. We are used to being abused and frankly we love it. We are intellectually lazy and we are getting dumber by the day. So i say, Obama you are too real for us and you are straight forward and that is not our cup of tea. We love cunning, lies, cheating, empty promises and we like to be made afraid of other people. If you really need evidence of how stupid we americans are, all you need is to look back 4 years ago and see that we re-elected an incompetent named George Bush. We need Clinton or McCain in the White house as our president because you see we like our politicians to have a total hidden agenda that is only personal to them and we dont want to participate in their thing. We just love to complain about it. That is all we love to do. Thank you for running though. To all my Clinton supporters, did i miss anything or should i throw in one of your usual insults at Obama. I know how you love to step on a man when he is down. Heck i will just leave it to you to go nuts with insults. Take it away Clintonites.

Excuse me,  why was this article filed under 'Clinton'.  Shouldn't it have been filed under 'Obama'?
What a shame to lose someone of Samantha Power's intelligence and committment because of an angry off the cuff remark. I feel sadened for her and the Obama campaign. It is truly hard to play be "Good Guy" rules !!!!
To believe that this Peev is so concerned about taking the high groung makes me want to puke.  Journalist are nothing but a bunch of vampires with the ability to put a little pouty face on when describing some tradgedy and in no more that one second you have a glaring smile the nest.  Bottom line she more than likely nearly broke a leg in trying to contact her editor with the DIRT!
What a shame to lose someone of Samantha Power's intelligence and committment because of an angry off the cuff remark. I feel sadened for her and the Obama campaign. It is truly hard to play be "Good Guy" rules !!!!
It's a very lifted spirit there...the real Obama campaing exposed. How about the cheating caucuses from Obama supporters in Texas? I witnessed sixteen years old girl voted for Obama in Washington state caucus and they can just go to different locations and did the same without any problem. No wonder why he won the caucuses. The DNC should have a hard look about that issue.
If you don't want it reported, don't say it. Pretty simple solution.  She probably wanted it reported and that is why she said it.
Am watching Tucker(well he’s better than FOX) on MSNBC, right now, and he had this woman on at the top of the hour. The first comment out of her mouth was to insult American reporters. Tucker smacked her good. She was out of line and I'm glad Tucker had the nads to take her down a peg or two from her 15 minutes of high-horse fame. God for you Tucker for pointing out to this woman that a responsible interviewer makes sure they understand the context and reasoning behind an interviewee’s comments.
I am an Obama supporter, and have been from the start.  I wish american journalists can take note of how honest, and unbiased reporters are in other countries.  As bad as it may seem, this race has unfortunately brought out the uggly side of politics; even if we already know of Hillary's.  In all honesty, I hope that nothing less than a positive turnout in November on behalf of all Democrats will be the end result.

I can't speak for anyone but myself, but I don't understand how as a country we can sweep major issues under the rug an still be able to sleep at night.

Last, I feel that it was very honorable for Ms. Power to resign amidst her remarks.  As she stated, it has no place in this campaign.  I hope that the Clinton camp can also take note, and possibly both camps can show some dignity that the rest of this world can see.
