Sharpton threatens lawsuit over FL, MI

Posted: Monday, March 10, 2008 11:08 AM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC's Domenico Montanaro

Al Sharpton is in Florida and said he is prepared to sue if Florida and Michigan’s delegates are seated as is. He said there are people who didn’t vote because they knew their vote wouldn’t count and “there must be a formula to factor” them in.

“There were many people that did not vote, because the DNC said their vote did not count,” Sharpton said on MSNBC. “Whatever way this is resolved, they must be factored in.”

Sharpton instead called for a re-do of the voting in both states. “There must be a way that people can exercise their right to vote who did not vote.”

Called it “absurd” that Michigan where uncommitted was on the ballot, would get their delegates seated as is.

”If they try to seat as is,” Sharpton said, he and the National Action Network are prepared to file suit.

As we noted in First Read this morning, Sharpton is in Florida to meet with local National Action Network chapters in Orlando, Port St. Lucie and Miami where they will plan to sign up people who will say they didn’t vote because they were “told their vote wouldn’t count. And we’ll do it in Michigan too.”

is this the only was obama can win is if l shapton does his fighting for him sharpon should keep his nose out and let them fight it out if he is so good and he is not but hillary is
I just knew that the two pretend reverends with their race baiting ways couldn't be kept under cover by the obamamites forever...bring on Al and Jesse...
Seriously....Clinton says that Iowa and Nevada are undemocratic by how they vote through the caucus system, but Michigan should count even when Obama's name wasn't on the ballot?

Is this the United States or the USSR?
Yes.  Damn well told.  I live in Ann Arbor Michigan.  'Everyone' knew that it was a beauty contest because it had been made plain in the papers that the Mich Dems had tried to buffalo the DNC and had their butts handed to them.  Our primary would not count.  For the first time in my life I didn't vote in a primary (and I'm 62).  Having our own governer try to claim it was fair was disgusting.

Whatever is done, they MUST take fairness into account and give us a second vote or not count us.

Al Sharpton should just go away.  The ONLY ONLY ONLY reason he's sniping is because Obama lost Florida.  Facts: Both were on the ballot, neither campaiged, although Obama ran tv ads in Fl, and Clinton did not. There was a record turnout, so the idea that people didn't vote is ridiculous.  I voted for Obama in my states primary, but the likes of Al Sharpton, whom I just can't stand, are about enough to make me regret my vote.
Sharpton needs to stay out of it.He doesn't have a dog in this fight.
Despite what you may think of Sharpton, he is correct.  There were many voters that did not vote in the Florida and Michigan contests.  Just look at the totals of the Dems vs Repubs in both states.  Repubs had far more turn out, which is completely out of the norm for this season.  A lot of us Dems stayed home.

Many Clinton and Obama supporters stayed home, because we were told it didn't count.  Everyone's vote should count.
The Clintons are beginning to sound like closet Republicans.

Their actions over the past few weeks look like those coming from Republican party aimed at destroying the Democratic party.  What gives?
maybe Sharptonwill have Hillary fired like he did Imus.He surely did not not open his piehole when schuster was put back on the air for his Pimping Chelsea remark. Now if Chelsea had been black he would have had protests in the streets.Just like SNL predicted Jesse and Al would be out with their racist rants.Hey Al as a MI voter please shut up and go away. You have enough to do with your idicttment of crooked campaign funds.
Look out, here comes the spin!  Sen. Obama is the reason for Sharpton's threats.  You people are so desperate, and despicable.
Booooo! Sharpton should stay as far away as humanly possible! He's the Bush endorsement that Obama doesn't need. Really??? Is the DNC is such sorry shape that Al Sharpton is the champion to save the day? NOPE

It's a BS notion anyway to consider including a state with only one name on the ballot. Common sense should prevail where litagation could only ruin. Stay home Sharpton.
This is insane. I don't like Sharpton, at ALL, but he does have a point. FLA should just be barred from all elections since they seem to screw up everything at every opportunity. I don't think they should be allowed to be seated and I think it is shameful that Billary wants to go back on his & her promise(s). Not the first for them but this is just blatant disregard for the rules. She'll do anything to win and that's how we got stuck with the "devider".
He is absoulutely right.  Florida and Michigan's dumb as rocks governors created the problem, caused many supporters to stay home, and prohibited campaigning--that's Hillary's real "firewall." How pathetic.  Do a redo and have the governors pay for it and man-up to their own stupidity.
I agree that Michigan should be re-caucused.  Florida should stand. And Al Sharpton should go home.  If he comes out as prominent in Obamas campaign going forward, I will stay home in November.  He disgusts me.  This is pure and simple racism, but we dare not call it that when it's being perpetuated by an African American.
From what I have read the Clinton camp doesn't object to a do/over so what's the big deal?  Why not just send a ballot to all the registered democrats and allow them to all vote through the mail and let the chips fall where they may.
If that sneak--Clinton--wants the delagates--tell her to do it the old fasion way--have a "FAIR" election--(like it's really fair if someones name is not on the ballot and there's no campaigning: she's a real piece of rotten work.)
Amazingly, I agree with Sharpton.  It was a beauty contest, many didn't vote (told it didn't matter.)  It must be a redo, or nothing.
You know things are crazy when Al Sharpton actually makes sense.  Howard Dean needs to settle this now.  Period.
I don't see how Al Sharpton will be able to prove that people did not vote because they were told their votes would not count.  Millions of people voted anyway; and anyone can say, I did not vote because...

The black supporters and left-wing Democrats are fearful that Hillary will win larger percentages in Michigan and Florida on a revote because Obama does not want to count Florida and Michigan and he has made that clear.  It is also Obama's fault for taking his name off of the Michigan ballot.  So much for his good judgement.  Now, they want to whine again!
I don't like Al Sharpton at all but he is absolutely right on this one.  Many people did not vote.  Personally, I voted in the Republican primary since Obama wasn't on the ballot here.  I figured I'm better off trying to influence the Republican primary by voting for Romney (the Republican I hate the least) rather than vote for Uncommitted in a Democrativ primary where my vote wouldn't count.
We know why Al Sharpton is posturing right now.  I do agree that there should be a revote (mail-in sounds good to me).  However, I don't think Sharpton would be out there if Obama has won FL and MI.

New Wave:  I ave an idea, why don't you just copy and paste your posts from thread to thread.  Oh wait, you already did that.  Just because HRC will not roll over and die for your candidate does not mean she wants to destroy the Democrats.  A enjoy having someone on my side who does not cave in just because she is down by less than 1% of the popular vote.
there was no way in hell al sharpton would keep his nose out of this. he is so full of self-importance and he likes his face in the papers.  but the only fair way is to let michigan and florida vote again in primaries. then everyone is happy.
Yeah, Sharpton and Jackson should stay out of it.  It is too hard to deny people their human and civil rights with these to fools running around and speaking out against injustices!?!?!?!?!?!
I voted for Obama in my states primary, but the likes of Al Sharpton, whom I just can't stand, are about enough to make me regret my vote.

Mary, Boston, MA (Sent Monday, March 10, 2008 11:25 AM)

You might regret your vote for Obama because of something Sharpton is doing? Sounds strange to me. The Clinton camp constantly whines about how every contest that they lost is somehow undemocratic or unfair or insignificant. Now, they want to count a state in which Obama wasn't even on the ballot? How Rovian of her.
STAY COOL EVERYONE. NO ONE IS GOING TO SUE ANYONE. A NEW BY MAIL ELECTION IS IN THE WORKS. IT'S FAIR TO ALL PARTIES INVOLVED.
New Obama strategy: The Clintons are trying to steal this election. They are doing everything they can to undermine democracy just so Hillary can win. Voters should avoid joining in this fraud!

If the Obama campaign saturates the media with these allegations we'll see a change.
Stay out of this, Sharpton. I don't think we need other people to tell us that the results in Fl and Mi as is cannot be used until, that is, democracy turns into anarchy which is what the Clinton folks would like to see.
Obama basically told his FL supporters not to vote!!
Edwards never said anything like that - and we GOTV for him.
If Michigan and Florida votes are applied to Democratic primary (do-over or otherwise), then does the number to win the overall delegates rise too?

If so, then the superdelegates will still decide the victory.  Nothing changes.
I am growing more angry every day at the way the Clintons are togther duing their damdst to make sure that they are the nominees for this election, whether or not they have won it fairly. There is no limits to their lust for power. In that, they are no better than the Bushies. If, based on the way she is acting now, Hillary steals this nomination, I will not vote in November. That is a measure of how disgusted I am with her tactics.
Forget Florida and Michigan!  The broke the rules and will have to live with it.  We do not care if the decision was made by a Republican Governor!  This is an inter-State problem and we should not be involved in coming up with solutions or paying money for a "do-over".  They can vote (or not) in November during the General Election.

What about the people who voted for John Edwards or other candidates who have since left the race -- their votes do not count either!  Do we conduct a "do-over" for other states as well?
http://twocanpete.blogspot.com
I'm not a big fan of Sharpton's but he has every ritht to be upset about this. What's fair is fair and what the Democratic power-elites are trying to do is certainly not fair.
Al Sharpton is a racist, separatist sack of crap!...And to everyone complaining that Obama wasn't on the Michigan ballot, the instructions were made CLEAR that if you wanted to vote for Obama (or Edwards), than you vote for "Uncommitted". It's not like the Obama supporters didn't have a vote! Quit whining!!
I am one who does not believe that there should be any redo in either Florida or Michigan. The State parties there knew the consequences yet their choice was to continue. The Florida story about it was a republican legislature and governor is simply bogus. Both state parties wanted a larger say so they could benefit from it. It cost them but they knew the rules and now want to change them. Clinton's campaign was quiet until it became obvious that they were not going to steam roll to the nomination. They thought they would have it all wrapped up and then could offer to seat the delegates because it wouldn't matter. All in all just another way that her and Bill will do anything to win, even if it means disenfranchising millions of new voters to the party who will become disillusioned with the democratic party and therefore the party will lose a huge base upon which to build.
Bottom line for the Clinton's is win at all cost and explain what the meaning of the word 'is' later after destroying what could be a new beginning for the party. Worst however is the number of so called super delegates who refuse to take a stand against them because of fear. No wonder Congress has such a poor public approval rating the members won't even stand up against these type of tactics, that is why they can't stand up against Bush regardless of his pathetic record. At least he has a backbone unlike the democratic superdelegates.
to mary from boston..do you think we should all play by the same rules?if you do then how could you possibly think that counting two states that didn't count now should count..listen to your own spin.cheating is still cheating..play fair or get out of the sandbox
I've never been a fan of Sharpton, but I do agree with him on this. I live in Michigan and did not vote because we were told our delegates would not be seated. We were also told Obama's, Edward's etc. names would not be on the ticket. There was advertising for us to vote uncommitted, but that was to protest the process. Never was it said that a vote for uncommitted was a vote for Obama or Edwards. Seating the delegates based on those results would be unfair on every level.
If the DNC can't respect the laws of the State of Florida, maybe, there candidates shouldn't be in the ballot in November either.

Our elected representatives set the date not a bunch of screamers in the DNC.
Hey don't blame Obama....the only thing he and Sharpton have in common is skin color.  I mean I know they all look alike (sarcasm) but to think that they are on the same page is ludicrous.

Also I can't believe I am defending Sharpton (hey even a broken clock is right twice a day) but Florida is the only state that didn't have more Democrats vote them Republicans and a great many DID stay home because they knew their vote wouldn't count.  But Sharpton is just trying to stay relevant in a time when no one cares what he has to say anymore.
The rules are the rules.  This is just a prime example of how the Clintons will do anything to win.  Why can't they simply follow the rules?  If Obama had the votes in Michigan and Florida instead of Hillary this wouldn't be happening.  Obama follows the rules!!!
AGAIN---we in MI were told that the nominee would request that our votes would be counted.Obama could have been a write-in---also Edwards---they both said no no no no.They had their reasons and it was not "we are just following the rules"The republicans all campaigned here and got the half delegate count, just like they did in FL.There was not a yard sign or abumpersticker for any of the dems to be seen.I worked at the election and we were very busy and more than ever a huge amount of absentee ballots. Many Rs crossed over to Ds We had a snowstorm the evening before and the election opened before even the snowplows and salt trucks were out.People were determined to vote anyway. Our delegates will be chosen the last of this month---there will probably be protesters there and I hope things do not get out of hand.
THE CLINTONS ARE ASSUMING THAT THE VOTERS ARE STUPID, UNTHINKING, ILLOGICAL MORONS!!!

People - stop for a moment and look at the parallels with Bush-Rove Politics:

1) Hillary has started to use the fear card - she has not said or shown anything that conclusively proves that she has the temperment, the judgment or the RELEVENT experience to "answer that 3am call" NOTHING, yet we are supposed to vote for her because she showed a scary ad and said she was qualified without showing use any substance behind that claim - CLINT-ROVIAN

2) She has taken on the tactic of repeating a lie over and over and over in the hopes that if she does it enough, the voters will believe it is true.  Bush called this "catipulting the propaganda"

Example:

Propoganda: Barack (the FRONT runner) should agree to be her running mate. Fact: SHE IS LOSING

Propoganda: Hillary has "35 years of experience" Fact: she has 8 years (I'm being generous) of experience in elected office, and Obama has over 12 years of experience in elected office

Propoganda: Hillary wins the states we need to win the election.
Fact: Hillary wins a lot of big blue states by very small margins (except New York, her home state) that would go for the Democratic nominee anyway...as for Ohio and Pennsylvania - they are not going to vote for free trade McCain -- on the other hand -- LOOK AT OBAMA'S VOTE TOTALS in the red states they are extraordinary, he appeals to young voters, independents, and even some Republicans (who are not voting for Hillary to help their party) He could put more states into play - this job is the PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES - not the President of the blue states....that is the problem we have NOW - George W. Bush acts like he is the President of the Red states only...do we really want to continue this???

3) Hillary is trying to change all the rules in the middle of the game. NOW she wants to disenfranchise those people who came and caucused.

4) Her political career, like that of George W. Bush and Carl Rove, has been wrought with scandal....I could go on and on and on...

Voters of Mississippi, Pennsylvania and all of the other states yet to vote - Please PROVE HILLARY WRONG!!
Just who will be running the country if Obama wins -- Sharpton, Jackson or Obama?
you can not change the rule of the game at the middle. This has been pushed hard only because Obama is far ahead of Hillary. Had it been the other way, no one would have talked about it once ruled out.Folk just watch what is going on. If this goes  on, Mccain is gonna win the election. It will be a free pass for him. The dem party has  to be very careful in its  move. Trying to help Hillary will hurt the party. You will see that. Hillary will not be elected. 75% of Obama supporters will vote against her because of what she has been doing.
THE PRIMARIES HAVE TURNED ME AGAINST PEOPLE I HAVE ADMIRED FOR YEARS.  I ALWAYS THOUGHT AL SHARPTON WAS A SMART, FUNNY AND ALL ROUND GOOD GUY.  SAME WITH JESSIE JACKSON.  NOW I JUST CAN'T STAND TO LOOK AT THEM.  THE SAME IS TRUE WITH SO MANY OF THE PEOPLE IN THE MEDIA AND THE CONGRESS.  THE ELECTION THAT OBAMA TOUTS AS WANTING TO BRING PEOPLE TOGETHER HAS BEEN THE MOST DIVISIVE ONE EVER, JUST BY HIM RUNNING AGAINST HILLARY AT THIS TIME IS WRONG.  HE KNEW WHAT HE WOULD DO.  THATS WHY THE PEOPLE WHO WANTED TO STOP HILLARY CHOSE HIM AS THEIR CANDIDATE.  IT WAS PREORDAINED. THE MEDIA PRACTALLY BEGGED HILLARY TO RUN FOR 8 YEARS.  WHEN SHE DID THEY SAT OUT TO DESTROY HER. WHAT A LYING BUNCH OF VULTURES THEY ARE.
MSNBC RANKS UP AT THE TOP!!!

I have heard enough Sharpton, Jackson B.S. can you imagine how rich they will become if Obama gets elected? Even worse how much we will have to listen (and see them) in the news. Obama will probally sue if he does not win!!!!!!!!!!!!!
How is TAWWANA BRAWLEY doing ,sharpton is a windbag shister who constantly sells the people he looks out for down river.
While I actually agree with Sharpton on this issue, I think he is the worst messenger.  Talk about divisive. Most people have a visceral reaction to Sharpton.  People who are  against Obama will try and use this to link him and Sharpton.  I think it's time for Sharpton and Jackson to bow out.  There are other voices out there.

Back to the delegate issue, bottom line Michigan and Florida broke the rules, no matter how stupid those rules were.  The power brokers knew the consequences before hand and still moved up their election.  I can't help but wonder if Obama or any other candidate had "won" FL and MI would Hillary be so hell bent on getting those delegates seated?  She is willing to win by any means necessary.  I don't think it's fair to seat the delegates as is. Either do a re-vote or split them 50/50 and don't count the popular vote.  What's the point in having "rules" if people can break them and there are no consequences?

does sharpton really think that by getting in the middle of all this he will HELP Obama win? I think not!
