First thoughts: Albany shocker

*** Albany Shocker: The Spitzer story is something that is simply shocking. But like the other recent sex scandals -- Vitter’s and Craig’s -- this one is likely to have very little national effect, unless Spitzer decides to stay in office. Assuming a fairly quick resignation, this will fade into being only a fascinating New York City/Albany story with a new star being born, Lt. Gov. David Paterson, who would become governor. The trouble only starts if Spitzer won't go, then he risks having prominent New Yorkers like Hillary Clinton being forced to call for his resignation and putting him in an even more precarious position. By the way, for those wondering, Spitzer is a superdelegate, as is Paterson. Both have endorsed Clinton. Should Spitzer resign, the number of superdelegates will simply be subtracted by one, since there's no provision in New York for a lieutenant governor to be replaced until the next election.

Video:  NBC's Political Director Chuck Todd offers his first read on the likelihood N.Y. Gov. Eliot Spitzer will resign; plus Barack Obama-Hillary Clinton battle.

*** The Magnolia match up: Can Obama win yet another state and pick up some more momentum heading into Pennsylvania? Could he win by such a margin that he erases the net delegates Clinton gained from her victories last week? Or can Clinton pull off the upset in a state Obama is favored to win? We’ll find out the answers to these questions in today’s Mississippi primary, where 33 pledged delegates are at stake. Polls open at 8:00 am ET and close at 8:00 pm ET.

*** Turning Mississippi blue? Take a look at Alabama (Obama won it by 14 points), Georgia (by 35 points), Louisiana (by 21 points) and South Carolina (by 28 points), and you'll get an idea about Obama's likely margin of victory. Frankly, if Clinton keeps Obama under 15 points, she may have a moral victory. That said, it wouldn't be surprising if Obama won by 20-plus points considering the makeup of Mississippi's electorate. In fact, Mississippi is one of those rare Southern states that might be in play in the general election if Obama becomes the nominee. One Dem statistician tells First Read that there are three red states that could swing if African-American turnout was ever maximized (both in registration and in actual turnout): Georgia, Louisiana and, yes, Mississippi. So don't assume this is just one of those untouchable red states for the Dems when watching returns roll in tonight.

Video: NBC's Andrea Mitchell reports on the Democratic battle today in Mississippi's primary.

*** Veep chatter: The big Clinton-Obama story yesterday was Obama pushing back against the idea that he would be Clinton’s vice president. Interestingly, Clinton supporter Ed Rendell seemed to backtrack a bit more than anyone else in the Clinton campaign when he admitted that he thinks Clinton would make a good veep for Obama. "It would be great and either way,” he said, per NBC/NJ’s Athena Jones. He added: "Whether it was Sen. Obama for the president and Sen. Clinton for vice president or vice versa. I think it would be great." While many analysts have picked up on this Clinton storyline as proof Clinton is trying to diminish Obama, don't assume this isn't ALSO an attempt by the Clintons to remind Obama that she should be considered for the veep slot if he's the nominee. It appears more likely every day that Clinton's Plan B is the VP slot, not Senate majority leader as so many others have speculated.

*** When surrogates attack: As Samantha Power’s “monster” comment to the Scotsman taught us, sometimes a remark by an adviser/surrogate to a fairly untraditional media outlet can produce a political firestorm. Will this statement by Clinton supporter Geraldine Ferraro spark a similar controversy? "If Obama was a white man, he would not be in this position," Ferraro told Torrance CA’s Daily Breeze. "And if he was a woman (of any color) he would not be in this position. He happens to be very lucky to be who he is. And the country is caught up in the concept." The Clinton campaign quickly distanced itself from this comment, because this is a slippery slope argument that could be demeaning to both Clinton and Obama.

*** Obama playing offense: Yesterday, Obama resurrected the Somali garb story, accusing the Clinton campaign of leaking the photo that made its way to Drudge, NBC/NJ’s Aswini Anburajan notes.  Obama said, "… when in the midst of a campaign you decide to throw the kitchen sink at your opponent because you're behind and your campaign starts leaking photos of me when I'm traveling overseas, wearing, in native clothes of those folks to make people afraid." Obama was very matter of fact about this -- the first time he's been this way on a story that hasn’t proven to be true.

*** The Rezko headache: Obama’s name came up tangentially at the Rezko trial yesterday -- regarding nominations to an Illinois health planning board. At a minimum, Obama's name is being mentioned just enough that the trial is going to provide a blueprint for some reporters to write some negative stories about Obama.

*** On the trail: Clinton, in Pennsylvania, stumps in Harrisburg and Philadelphia before returning to DC later in the evening; McCain is in the potential battleground state of Missouri, campaigning in St. Louis; and Obama holds a town hall in Fairless Hills, PA.

Hillary’s gender problem is not that she’s a woman, but rather that she’s not comfortable enough in her own skin to make judgments independent of the fact.  We can’t trust anyone as commander in chief that feels they have to look tough because of their race or gender.  That’s why Hillary chose to side with Bush and McCain on the war authorization vote, and that’s why she has to run this negative buzz-killer of a campaign alternating bellicosity and victimhood.

The argument that Barack wasn’t in the Senate at the time and would have voted to authorize the Iraq war is just laughable.  He not only said it was a bad idea, he predicted the negative consequences that unfolded.  You really think he would have voted for it anyway?  It’s not like he would have been lonely.  It wouldn’t have been just Barack and Dennis Kucinich voting no.  After all those administration briefings and all the neocon propaganda, one out of four senators still recognized that this was a dumb idea and cast no votes.  Hillary chose to go along with Bush and McCain and voted to authorize the use of our armed forces in Iraq.

So take your pick.  Maybe all her experience and all her plans and all her husband’s great advice still weren’t enough to lead her to the right choice on the most critical foreign policy decision in a generation.  In which case I’m not much interested in hearing any more about all of Hillary’s qualifications.  It’s utterly worthless hype.

Or maybe she’s really as brilliant and experienced and insightful as her loyalists would have us believe.  In that case she went to stand with the other three out of four senators, two-thirds of them Republicans, because she was afraid that as a woman and future presidential candidate she wouldn’t look tough enough.  We desperately needed courageous leadership, and she showed us timidity and political cowardice of the worst sort when it really counted.  Either way she fails the commander in chief test miserably.  We need a leader with foresight who puts the best interests of the country first; not another round of self-serving political posturing.

Barack isn’t running to symbolize the culmination of the civil rights movement.  While the success of his candidacy signals the end of a long road for many, Barack himself is running as a loyal American trying to help this country make a fresh start.  The paleo-feminist Hillary loyalists want us to believe that Hillary is somehow the embodiment of womanhood, and the mere fact of her election would mean the end of gender inequality.  Talk about delusional.  The real fantasy is thinking that you can foist this vapid, padded pants-suit on the American public as a legitimate commander in chief.
Hmmm, we know the Clinton spin already.

Moral victories declared at any margin of loss.

Any Obama win means its a (and choose your best guess for most marginalizing phrase)...

insignificant State
little State
State that doesn't matter
Red State
State that Dems don't need in the Fall
or even worse.

Welcome to the Clinton spin cycle...where things never really get clean.

Go Obama 08 (every State matters)
Geraldine Ferrero should resign. However, the Clintons have a much higher Scum Bag tolerance. Peter Paul, Spitzer, Ferrero just this week.

Barack Obama has shown himself to be an excellent candidate with a bright future in American politics. With the country and the world where it is right now though, we need a leader who can unite the people, and that person is not Obama. His candidacy is more about a movement then it is about leadership, and those are distinct differences. A leader will have concrete and objective plans. A movement has vague notions coupled with rhetorical speeches. Obama is a movement type of a candidate, in other words, he sounds better then he really is. It is time for the Democrats to unite behind a candidate that can get the job done on Day #1, and that of course is Hillary Clinton. Hillary has the concrete plans to go along with her speeches that unite all Americans. She has had many successes, and some failure that she has learned from in the past. Obama has neither. Any presidency with Obama would be a academic and learning exercise for at least his first term. There probably would not be a second term for Obama. He's lead in the manner of a Jimmy Carter rather then a Bill Clinton. Hillary is really the only choice. Later this summer the super-delegates will realize that only Hillary can lead these nation. Barack's time will come, but not this time.
Ever notice how jaycee can have multiple postings on different subjects, at the same time?

Yep, and I can walk and chew gum at the same time, too.  Ever notice how the trolls come crawling out of the woodwork to fumble around with feeble personal attacks when they can’t refute an argument on merit?
>> that said, it wouldn't be surprising if Obama won by 20-plus points considering the makeup of Mississippi's electorate. <<

Well, since her great pandering GAFFE (perhaps her husband's but since we don't really know who's running we'll attribute his remarks to her) about Obama maybe being good enough to be her VP...let's just say that if he wins by more than 20% I won't be surprised.

There may have been no remark made by her or her surrogates that has made me angrier.  Clinton's = pandering.  Say no to pandering.  Vote Obama 08
Come on Mississippi!
Geraldine Ferraro?  Said what?!?!

Oh my!  Clinton should "renounce" and "reject" this immediately!  Sadly, it wasn't last night, shortly after the memo came out, but I'll give her a bit of leeway.  To me, this is just another 3am call that she is messing up on by 1) not answering 2) spinning it and then 3) not rising up to an ethical level to combat it--oh wait!  It's from one of her supporters, mustn't step on those toes, she needs all the support she can get!

Bummer.
Oh yes BRING IT ON! BO the stench is seeping into the the fabric of our lives!!!!! You are a phony!
OBAMA/REZKO
I'm not thinkin Hillary could ask Spitzer to resign.......she didn't call Bill to.
For some reason, I really don't see Obama picking a running mate who would bring negatives of 53 to the ticket.
It would never happen, but if Obama had Clinton as Veep, he would be shielded from every racist lunatic who'd want to shoot him down, because with Clinton a heartbeat away from the throne, no one would want to see Obama killed.  Otherwise, it's a stupid idea that'll never happen---Clinton's ego is FAR too big to be second banana to anyone after having been so to her unfaithful husband.
Oh my god!  Obama's name was mentioned tangentially in the Rezko trial!  The same for a person Obama has never done any favors for!  The same person to which Obama has never been connected of any wrongdoing!  SCANDALOUS!

Lazy reporters looking for cheap headlines eh?
Rezko is more like a migraine than a mere headache.
The pain is going to hurt BO in a huge way!  Take a chill pill people we are in for a good ride on BO'S pain train!
I'd like to kindly remind Mrs. Ferraro that Obama, or even Hilary for that matter, are not tokens by any stretch in this 2008 election.  SHE was the token at that time.  Sit down and be quiet.
Wow - Ferraro is one bitter lady.  The thing is, if Obama was any other BLACK man, he wouldn't be where he is.  It's because of who is he fundamentally - not because of the color of his skin - that people are drawn to him.  I'm really disappointed in Ferraro's comments (I'm disappointed in a lot of NY politicians lately...)
But what kind of national attention will there be if someone raises the question of campaign contributions to Clinton, or, better yet if Billary winds up on the client list?
As opposed to, say, "good negative stories", eh?
I have blogged since I first heard Hillary drop this Dream Ticket idea that I really thought she was planting this seed so that SHE could be HIS VP! The first time I heard it was last Wednesday - the morning AFTER Ohio and Texas where she DID NOT win by the HUGE margins necessary to make a sizable DENT in Obama's Pledged Delegate lead. She and Bill knew then that the MATH was against them. There was no way she could catch up. So they figured they would rather be VP than be the Jr. Senator from NY. But she COULDN'T come out and SAY that she wanted to be VP - so she and Bill and Lanny Davis and Ed Rendell and others came out en masse last week with this Dream Ticket idea. By her not categorically saying yesterday that she won't be VP only confirms this. As does Ed Rendell's statement of yesterday. I, for one, hope Obama does not choose her. He should go with Bill Richardson or John Edwards or someone else. Why would he want to saddle himself with Hillary and Bill and all of their 1990s baggage that the GOP is just salivating at the prospect of digging up?
There is no doubt that these two would make a great ticket and could bring congress and the white house under Democratic control for years to come.  As teh primary season plays out we will learn who will get the popular vote, who will get the delegate vote, who will act in support of the country and the Party and who will act in support of their ambition.
Every time one of these scandals crop up, we see the inevitable news conference with the poor wife standing by her man's side.  I don't know how these women do it.  Were it me, there would be flames coming out of both of my ears!  If you're guilty, do the right thing, resign, Governor Spitzer.  Please don't take your cues from the likes of Vitter and Craig.
What about the Peter Paul lawsuit that Hillary is likely to testify? Only crazies will think the Rekzo issue will be significant. Reporters are so hungry to find something to reveal about Obama when they have gone as far as to go to Asia and Africa to investigate his roots. Frustrated, they now look to Rekzo issue while disregarding the Peter Paul and other Hillary scandals since Hillary and her husband are also implicated in this case.
Spitzer just shows that politics are the same. Yours, mine and ours ,OBAMA is different he will never let you down. Up with hope ,not so much peace as he continues war funding, but hope.
Clinton's "Plan B" is to be the VP? How can you be so gullible??  Clinton's "Plan B" is to be so negative on Obama that he will lose to McCain and she will have a clear shot at the 2012 election.
When are you all going to announce that Obama won Texas?
So will Hillary denounce Ferraro? Will she "reign" her in? She refuses to do so with Wolfson.  But Lord let someone from Obama camp say anything negative about her and heads must roll!  I'm so over Clinton. When will she stop playing the gender card?  Is this how it will work if she's president?  "Those mean old world dictators won't work with me because I'm a girl." Wah, wah, wah.

I'm disappointed in Ferraro. I wasn't old enough to vote when she ran with Mondale, but had I been, I would have voted for them.
Ferraro should resign immediately. Its only fair after Powers.
Hillary’s gender problem is not that she’s a woman, but rather that she’s not comfortable enough in her own skin to make judgments independent of the fact.  We can’t trust anyone as commander in chief that feels they have to look tough because of their race or gender.  That’s why Hillary chose to side with Bush and McCain on the war authorization vote, and that’s why she has to run this negative buzz-killer of a campaign alternating bellicosity and victim.

Brilliant Statement--I couldn't agree more!!!
OBAMA wants it all his way. He hates hilliary and her stupid unedumacated working class.Just think how much you will miss her and her supporters in the fall. But remember he will win all the red states, she would only win CALIF NY OHIO what kind of logic oh yea the logic of HOPE and change.SHE IS A "MONSTER the new kind of politics OBAMAS WAY OR THE HIGHWAY sounds like george bush is running for office again
Thanks, MSNBC, for the Rezko primer. I think anyone who reads that should realize what a dead end it is. In the 90's Rezko was the go-to guy for alot of IL politicians and was actually highly respected at the time so he and Obama became friends, big deal.  Things went off track for Rezko, obviously, but that has nothing to do with Obama. Can we get over it now?
Posting today from the National Religious Broadcasters convention in Nashville. Bush is speaking here today. Tony Perkins and Dobson yesterday. In my business, I regularly cross paths with this wing of the Republican Pary and provide services in most election cycles to both parties. I try not to let on that I'm an Obama supporter.
Anyway, the theme here this year is "Just My Vote." That is what they are recommending for McCain. Just vote for him, but nothing else. No money, no workers. Just My Vote. They are asking folks to go ahead and contribute to and work for down ballot races, but if McCain wants anything more than votes, he has to ask for it and earn it.
Not a lot of Bush support here either. As a matter of fact, his speaking seems to be more of a burden because of all of the security precautions. I think most of the people here would rather he just go away now.
Anyway, not a lot of enthusiasm at this convention this year compared to previous years. Can only be a good sign for the Dems.
Supers, We need to hold all Supers who are uncommited responsible if Obama loses PA in the general because of the seven week Smear that Hillary is planning.

What a sham of a race.  OBAMA CAN NOT LOSE THE PLEDGE DELEGATE LEAD, TO GIVE HILLARY THE NOMINATION IS STEALING THE ELECTION. PERIOD.

FR,
I am not surprised by what the Hillary supporter said. Hillary's circle of supporters is so full of hatemongers and monsters. They don't try to be hoenst and will simply attack as if they are real monsters. I am so tired and sick of her supporters, so I am calling them monsters -- though they are not really mosnters.
"Could he win by such a margin that he erases the net delegates Clinton gained from her victories last week?"
Obama actually netted a 13 delegate win last week. He lost 4 delegates in the 5 races last week, Gained 9 in the superdelegate race and picked up an 8 delegate swing when California's race was certified. (If you wanted to nitpick and specify just what happened on Tuesday, he still won: down 6 in those 4 states, up three on the supers and still with the 8 swing in CA.)
This talk by Clintonites about making the Popular Vote the deciding factor over Pledged Delegates won is yet another example of them trying to change the rules in the middle - actually the last quarter - of the game. The STRATEGY employed by each campaign - from Iowa on - was to accumulate the most DELEGATES - NOT POPULAR VOTE! WHY?? BECAUSE THOSE ARE THE RULES!! If the campaigns thought that the GOAL was to achieve the MOST POPULAR VOTES then the campaigns would have SKIPPED all the small, less populated states - like Iowa and NH - and gone straight to the highly populated states! But the RULES said the GOAL WAS DELEGATES - even MARK PENN and HAROLD ICKES are on record saying the name of the game is DELEGATES! That is, as long as they thought Hillary would win the most delegates. So each campaign set up THEIR STRATEGIES BASED ON THE DELEGATE RULE! The Party can argue the MERITS of this Delegate system - but NOT in the final quarter of THIS NOMINATING PROCESS! Whichever candidate has accumulated the most PLEDGED DELEGATES should have the advantage in getting the nomination. Of course, Obama leads in all three areas - Pledged Delegates, Popular Vote, and # of states won. And even with re-dos in FL and MI, it is unlikely these three areas will change. With a re-do Obama will no doubt receive most of the rather large vote that went to John Edwards in January. And when you factor in that in EVERY state where Obama CAMPAIGNS IN PERSON he closes - or OVERTAKES - Hillary's lead - there is a strong chance Obama will come very close to Hillary, or even beat her in both states. So after all is said and done, Obama will lead in all three areas and should be the nominee because in November he will win the BLUE states against McCain as well as many Purple and Red states - in the Midwest, South, and Southwest.
The resko story in the NY times could just have easily been titled "Email shows Obama non-involvement . . ."

Obama should mock this "guilt by association" story line as thoroughly as McCain mocked the sexual innuendo of his NY Times story.

Don't let the press or the Clintons write your headlines for you Sen. Obama.  You did a good job ridiculing the VP talk, now do the same with the press coverage of Rezko.

Keep it simple, and keep it amusing, all the way to the White House.

CAN SOMEONE TELL ME, WHY POWER HAD TO RESIGN OVER THE "MONSTER" COMMENT;

YET CLINTON IS NOT SAYING ANYTHING ABOUT FERRARO SAYING "OBAMA IS LUCKY TO BE BLACK"???

wtf?
Here we go agin...Another corrupt polittician. Why am I not surprised? When the question comes up, "should Eliot  spitzer resign? Uh...Hell yes! I don't care if your a democrat or a republican, conservative or liberal, these politicians should not walk. You can bet that Spitzer has put people behind bars for far much less, and if it were you or I, you'd already be in jail. The hypocrisy is just sickening...None of us are perfect, but we shold be able to trust thsoe put in such high positions of power to act in a manner just for such a position. Put em' away! One last thought. You can bet the GOP is going to use this as much as they can against the Dems, just remember as of the last two years we've had a run on the GOP (Grand Ol' perverts) Screwing young boys or page girls, or soliciting them, bilking the public out of billions and on and on...so before they go yealing the better rememeber there are three fingers pointing back at you.
REZKO we don't need no RESCO BOSCO or any thing that would make us think bad thoughts about the ANGEL obamma. He is a different kind of POL .He is vindictive ,egotistical and quite easily flustered when things dont go his way ie. his press conference on resco and nafta and will he support GAY MARRIAGE even though its against his church or abortion. Will his church kick him out if he supports a womens right to have a safe ABORTION .What are his views can any OBAMMA fan point to anything he says that shows oneway or another. Which is it?
Geraldine Ferrero is a symbol of exactly the kind of politics that Obama rails against.  If she doesn't like him, he must be doing something right.
NO WAY!

There is no way that Obama will select Hillary as his VP running mate. He knows her huge negatives and the fact that she voted for the war in Iraq would be a killer to his campaign for Presdient against McCain. Obama will pick someone else and will use "the economy stupid" to end McCain's bid for the Presidency. Regarding McCain's "the surge is working", I see we lost 7 more troopers yesterday in Iraq. Tell the parents of those 7 young soldiers that the surge is working McCain. How mnay more young Amercians do we need to lose in this senseless police action in Iraq to prove your surge is working Mr. McCain?

No, Obama will not select Hillary. If he does he better send her off somewhere during the general election where she can't open her mouth until it is all over, and run against McCain on his own.
FR --> The Spitzer story is something that is simply shocking. But like the other recent sex scandals -- Vitter’s and Craig’s -- this one is likely to have very little national effect,

Mostly because it involves a Democrat. Democrats don't care about affairs. See SF Mayor "Any Twosome Newsom' for details.
This is a WRAP for Spitzer. He is totally toast. This is a guy who busted two prostitution rings in 2004 and made strong comments against prostitution. Now he's paying $5,000 an hour for a 20-something prostitute when he's got a perfectly good-looking wife.

Additional sex scandalry: http://www.nationalscold.com/2008/03/in-depth-report-clinton-doesnt-have.html
Simple Logic, Hillary just don't have the class required to be the president. She is no better than Ann Coulter when she turns to bearing false whitness. As the campaign proceeds she will only get more bold in her false stories for she is a self serving monster.
Thanks MSNBZZZZZZ for the primer on resco ,I m sure there is nothing to your canidate being involved in a land deal where he benifited by getting property for cheap next door nothing wrong here folks just move on by,Joe in the morning must be losing veiwers he singing a different tune about clinton poor hill this poor hill that but MICA keeps it real cheerleading the way for obama, better watch out or even news junkies like me will switch then your numbers are gone, see you in the funny pages not on TV. PS chuck todd should shave unless the biker news man is the look he is going for.The jammy is so unbecoming a proper news man unless it was during the civil war where alot of men had beards but this isnt 1864 its 2008 clean up and look like a man not a high school senior.
Tit for tat that is all the OBAMMAWANNABES care about not what he is doing but what she is doing like it makes the behavior better that both are doing it MACAIN 08
Did anyone else notice that during Spitzer's "confession" that he TOTALLY ignored his wife standing beside him?? He never even introduced her, nor did he LOOK at her. She looked pathetic standing there, looking down; what an embarrassment for her and her family. Shows you just how respectful he is of woman, now doesn't it? Seems like Hillary surrounds herself with these types.
RULE RULES RULES OBAMMAWANNABWES here is a rule you wont play by SUPER DELEGATE vote for who they want to yet if they go for hilliary all I hear is ther will be RIOTS and CHAOS al sharpton and Former GOV. WILDER cant wait.MACAIN 08 a real WAR hero not a campaign slogan hope for change yea the dems will change look at the reformer ELLIOT SPITZER.
I think Obama answered it best yesterday about Clinton being VP.  "She does not represent the kind of change I think America wants".

Besides, how can she be the VP when the Republicans will just use her words against Obama in the general election.  I can just hear McCain saying, "Your own VP candidate even said that you weren't qualified to be President"...
Yep, and I can walk and chew gum at the same time, too.  Ever notice how the trolls come crawling out of the woodwork to fumble around with feeble personal attacks when they can’t refute an argument on merit?

jaycee, Ventura, California

Too bad you can't think. You have the intellect of a ferret. That's what makes you a good Democrat. You have no arguments to refute, just pompous and vacuous statements about nothing in particular.
