RNC: Mississippi won't be in play

From NBC's Mark Murray
The Republican National Committee disagrees with our speculation earlier this morning that Mississippi could be in play in the general election if Obama becomes the Dem nominee.

Demographically, Obama might have some advantages in the state, RNC spokesman Alex Conant tells First Read. But ideologically, Conant adds, Obama will have a tough time in Mississippi. "It hasn't gone Democrat in over 30 years," he said.

The youth vote is showing to be more reliable this year in the primaries, so why do people think they won't show up when for the general election.  I predict the turnout for the General Election this year is going break records.  Why, you ask?  Because Obama will have an organiztion in place to make sure the vote gets out on primary day.  This is the most important election in centuries.  The future of America hangs in the balance.
"Depends on how liberal Obama comes off in the general election. We have democrats down here who aren't insane. "

Any republicans who aren't insane?
Mississippi is very much in play if Obama is the nominee. Even Gore got 42% in MS.  Granted, that's a significant margin but it was before the full devastation of George Bush's presidency.  Moreover, time s have changed--even in MS.  The far-right isn't exactly hop-hoppin' to vote for McCain, and moderates plus independents are motivated more than ever.  I look forward to proving the RNC wrong.
The following comes from The Daily Herald today." I expect(the trial) to probably end the govenor's career". Govenor Blagojevich, that is, bosom buddy to former govenor Ryan, who is already in jail." But Blagojevich is not the only poitician at risk from this trial. Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama, the freshman senator from Il. has a lot to lose, even if he's never accused of wrongdoing in the case simply because of his past relationship with Rezko." A change you can believe in? Sounds like politics as usual to me. The longer this race goes on, the more dirt you will seee from Obama. The Trinity church, Farakhan,et al. It's good Obama has gotten you young people involved in the election process, but you are being led by a politician who speaks about change, while being politics as usual. A real vote for change would be for McCain, someone who truly cares for his country, and not just about political gain.
He may not win mississippi, but he sure as heck can mak the r's spend time energy and resources defending their turf there.  Money they wont have for other states.  It's called a 50 state strategy.
when I went ot alabama and auburn the youth vote is mostlyrepublican as it is in tennessee where i went to college too. We'll see republican educted youth versus democratic trendy youth when the time comes and you'll see then. Colege towns vote republican mainly - the trend since Reagan years. Yuou'll see - the only way to beat a r reublican is to put Hillary as nominee...the ONLY way! onjce again, the democratic party will out a goofey dude just like John Kerry was as their nominee and we'll crush you again. I'm glad we are not apparantly having to face CLinton and their agressive strenghts...vote obama so we republicans can win.
The RNC is absolutely terrified of Sen. Obama.  This is why they have been pushing so hard for the Florida delegation to be sat as-is.  He will stretch them so thin in the general that they will lose a few red states.  I can already see VA, LA, NM, CO, IA, ND(!), and NC switching very easily.  McCain will not win OH or PA with his NAFTA stance but he could possibly get FL with Crist on his ticket.  As the economy goes further and further into the tank even more states will switch as well.  The RNC's biggest nightmare is the downticket effect that Obama will have.  Clinton has no coattails and this is why the RNC has been secretly rooting for her.
OBAMA WONT WIN A SINGLE SOUTHERN STATE- THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY AND THE OBAMAMANIACS ARE LIVING IN A FANTASY LAND!!! NBC-long ago in the tank for Obama, pointed out...........'Obama won Alabama by 14 points, Georgia (by 35 points), Louisiana (by 21 points) and South Carolina (by 28 points), and you'll get an idea about Obama's likely margin of victory. Frankly, if Clinton keeps Obama under 15 points, she may have a moral victory'....................
LMAO- AND? He won't win any of those states in November, and all the talk of him having a chance in the Heartland is even more hilarious as him winning the south. Obama outspent Clinton 4-1 here in Texas and lost by 100,000.
Yep, there is a university here in Tuscaloosa, Alabama and the youth will McCain and has voted along with Auburn for the Republican nomination since the Reagan years as it will support a Republican. Clinton would be better at her strngths to defeat MCczain and I'm glasd we may not have to face her - we will crush obma habnds down as will Mississippi! He cant evenw in the Democratic states so wie will have a shot there. he cant win big states so we will hfair better there.

Checkmate!
Go elephants!
"Dr.Strangedog, it's naive to assume that Bush is a representation of all republicans.
To be honest, comparing all republicans, conservative and otherwise, to Bush amounts to mudslinging and dirty politics as far as I'm concerned.
I don't know where that belief came from, but it always happens - the incumbent is always misread as his party's flagship. Whether it's a Dem OR Repub.
Not the case here.
Dr.Strangeelephant, FL"

Must have been fooled by the Repub Congress' 7-year suplicant love in.
I'm a Mississippian casting my vote for Hillary this afternoon.  Obama's name strikes hope in many blacks in this state, but fear to whites.  I don't think Obama will take Mississippi.
I have heard from many lifetime democrats who would vote for McCain if Obama was the nominee. (Including me!). Do you know anything about him? Don't you think Oprah and Louis have been lining his pockets!
In IL, Obama just helped a virtually unknown Dem, Bill Foster, win Denny Hastert's old seat in an all Republican district. There's more where that came from.

Obama as a candidate has increased turnout in voting blocks not sufficiently tapped into before. That is a plus for down ballet Dems. With the potential to carry with him a much needed majority into the House and Senate we will finally have the opportunity to make the changes that need to be made and focus on helping all American's not just wealthy Americans.

I don't hear of too many Moderate Republicans converting to Clinton like they are to Obama. The fact is CA and NY will vote Dem regardless. It doesn't even matter than Clinton won those. FL and OH will remain toss-ups as usual but Obama is breaking new ground in areas not considered viable by Dems in the past. It's something we need to consider.
How can Mississippi NOT be in play after Katrina?
Obama hasn't taken Mississippi yet... Many republican whites down here are voting strategically for Hillary in hopes for a McCain win in November.
A short stay in MS is like travelling in a time machine to the 1950s - a time the Republicans call "the good ole days" - "...y'know when dem uppity blacks knew their place and all" - there is an inherent racism that is SO anchored here that it isn't even talked about anymore! Do not be surprised to see Republican attempts at voter fraud and poll manipulations that will make FL 2000 look like a playground prank! I am a Clinton supporter, but as a Democrat FIRST, I hope that the Obama campaign can REALLY make a difference in MS - could they turn it BLUE? Not from what I see travelling there, but good Democratic campaigns with solid Democratic poll watchers could be the start we need!

GO DEMS!
BTW, did anyone else see the results of the SurveyUSA 50-state general election polls? You do, of course, have to take such polls with a grain of salt this far out, but the fact that the poll had Obama winning North Dakota over McCain (ND being a 60% state for Bush in the last two elections) was pretty shocking. Also shocking: Obama winning Michigan over McCain, but McCain winning it over Clinton. That only makes me more excited to see the results of a revote in that state! >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Mark, Obama WILL NEVER win Ohio over any Republican in November, hence your Survey USA results get flushed since taking Ohio away from him- and giving it to McCain- Obama loses. They also gave Obama Virginia- which is a joke- HE WON'T WIN THE oLD Dominion in Nov- you dems are so stupid.
People, the "Conventional Wisdom" will be redefined. Stop thinking Red and Blue and thinks shades of Purple. From delicate hues of lavender to deep penetrating Plum. Those of us who truly want change will no longer be a part of these antiquated established practices or unacceptable standards. I would say the turn out will be a lot different from the black community when they have a choice that is not the traditional "older white man". I believe the christians of the south have hoped for a more harmonious existence (black or white). I hope every black man and every black boy looks at Barack Obama and sees how truly worthy they are in our society. Obama/Gore/Richardson? Whaddaya think, Latino in VP spot? It's a beautiful day people. Just think, if Tiger Woods or Arthur Ashe had listened to the nay-sayers, they would not be the legends they are today. The audacity to penetrate these traditionally "white's only" sports. They tried to stop them, but they kept the faith, and held on to the hope. Now they demand respect all over the world.
I think Obama can carry 4 or 5 red states.
Clinton could not carry any of them.

Her campaign is just like Kerry's, thats why we lost. Terry McCrapola was the DNC chair then and he is advising Clinton. The Dems can win with states they always carry and hope that Ohio and a few others flip.

You have to campaign in ALL STATES Hill
"Obama is very anti gun" --Thomas, Slidell, Louisiana

That's not accurate. Here are actual Obama quotes. As you can see he would not restrict Louisiana sportsmen and gun owners like you Tom. His concern is keeping an illegal flood of guns out of the inner city. I believe his solution of "enforcing the gun laws on the books" is the same as advocated by the NRA.

"what we can do is to provide just some common-sense enforcement. The efforts by law enforcement to obtain the information required to trace back guns that have been used in crimes to unscrupulous gun dealers. As president, I intend to make it happen. We essentially have two realities, when it comes to guns, in this country. You've got the tradition of lawful gun ownership. It is very important for many Americans to be able to hunt, fish, take their kids out, teach them how to shoot. Then you've got the reality of 34 Chicago public school students who get shot down on the streets of Chicago. We can reconcile those two realities by making sure the Second Amendment is respected and that people are able to lawfully own guns, but that we also start cracking down on the kinds of abuses of firearms that we see on the streets."

"We know what to do. We've got to enforce the gun laws that are on the books. We've got to make sure that unscrupulous gun dealers aren't loading up vans and dumping guns in our communities, because we know they're not made in our communities. There aren't any gun manufacturers here, right here in the middle of Detroit."
YES WE CAN!!!
Scott Golden - HOw ignorant are you?  You don't remember the blacks being shot while crossing the bridge towards the white population?  I believe our federal government has been there to help many national disasters (remember FEMA) and they were there a lot sooner than they were for Katrina.  Check your history.  We have even been quicker in sending help to other countries!!  You may not think it, but I and many others believe it was a major disgrace on the part of our government, city, state and federal and the way they reacted to this disaster.
"Any republicans who aren't insane?"
--Just wondering

Rhetorical question?
the only reason oabama wins the black vote is because he the brother and same color. they like the rest of us don,t know a dam thing about him. there is no fool likean old fool maccain will get my vote and i am a demacrat
Does RNC stand for Real Nut Cases?
I spoke with a Mormon Mississippian White male a few days ago. He reminded me about the "Falg Vote" and how every back hills patriot in the state came out to vote in defense of the flag. He said his Brother, who'd never voted in his life, voted in that election.

He insisted that his brother would vote in this election against Hillary or Obama... for the exact same reason they voted for their flag.

The Dems will not, under an cirecumstances win Mississippi.
Thomas, Slidell, Louisiana, You're absolutely correct when you said,

"Obama stands no chance whatsoever to take Mississippi in November, not only the electorate, I think it's 80 or 90 percent of whites vote republican and will vote for McCain, remember that the south is very pro gun, Obama is very anti gun..  That doesn't bode well for him in the South.  He won't take 1 southern state..."

Do The Math Obama, FLA, You're absolutely correct as well when you said,

"I bet Obama won't win in November.

It is easy for him to win the red state caucuses because the fanatical hard-line liberals dominate these proceedings. For example, in Wyoming little over 9,000 state delegates elected compared to the half a million who will be eligible to vote in the actual election. Even on a turn out of 50% the turnout for the Presidential election would be over 10 times that of the caucuses. Obama wins in these red states because they have such a low number of democrats in the first place.

He won't be able to do the same in secret ballot state-wide elections."

It's easy to understand why supporters of Obama are so GAH GAH over over Obama, they really don't put much thought into it, or anything for that matter.
WELL  HILERY MAY HAVE THROWN  THE KITCHEN SINK AT OBAMA, BUT OBAMA IS GONNA THROW A HOUSE AT HER. SHES DOES NOT CARE ABOUT BLACKS OR HISPANICS. SHE JUST USE THEM TO GET HER VOTES...SHAME ON YOU HILERY.
"It hasn't gone Democrat in 30 years".  This means it has gone democrat in most people's life time.  Things change and demographics change.  Most of the African-American population actually lives in the south.

37% Percentage of Mississippi’s population that is black, highest of any state. Blacks also make up more than a quarter of the population in Louisiana (32%), Georgia (30%), Maryland (30%), South Carolina (29%), and Alabama (27%). They comprise 57% of the population in the District of Columbia. [http://www.infoplease.com/spot/bhmcensus1.html]

Get your facts straight.  If African-Americans actually show up at the polls, they can make a huge difference.  I'm from Georgia. You better believe there are white democrats here too.  The fact that Reagan ran the table back in 80 proves that anything can happen.  What if a major scandal breaks on McCain? He keeps having lobbyist problems.  Now he's got this Airbus issue.  And, what about his medical records that he hasn't released. He DID have cancer several years back. I hope something like that doesn't happen to him. I like McCain. I just disagree with him on the issues.

There are a number of battleground and traditionally red states that Obama could win.

http://www.surveyusa.com/index.php/2008/03/06/electoral-math-as-of-030608-obama-280-mccain-258/

BTW, this also shows that Obama would also win the traditonal big blue states that Hillary is bragging about, which should be obvious to anyone with a brain.
this message is for Scott, I pray that you will have to walk a mile in the shoes of the victims of katrina so you will know how ignorant and callous your words are. It's people like you who would continue to support a government that ignores its people just like Hillary Clinton she refused to spend more than a day in Mississippi because she had to get to Pennsylvania to campaign and they don't vote until 4/22
It amazes me that so many out-of-state people know how the people in Miss. will vote.  Maybe some r former Mississippians now living in another state, like me. But if u have never resided in Miss. u don't know the people there.  Mississippians, about 1.7 milion registered to vote, just don't turn out for primaries. Osama Obama will probably win the primary, which doesn't really mean anything, simpily because the 70% black voters will vote because Obama is colored(half black).  If Obama should by chance win the Dem's running spot in the General election, the white majority of Mississippi voters will vote for the white person.
tsg in tuscaloosa, hey, go marry your cousin again, so you can continue pass down that intelligence gene to that special family of yours. He haw !
Dr.Strangeelephant, FL

No I'm not lumping all republicans together. I'm saying as every pundit has, this administration has hurt the RNC. Traditionally republican states are losing seats left and right. So you're saying this is coincidence?

The RNC is reaping what it has sewn. They've lumped all Democrats with liberalism. This is the environment they created. You can't have it both ways.

Not here. Not this time.
Maybe he won't win it, but he'll make the Republicans think about defending it. The same will happen in other states. The Republicans haven't had any fight on their home turfs in a long time. Each fight weakens a state until starts to become more and more a swing state.
I'm not worried about it. Once Hillary takes the nomination and gets her man of choice on the ticket with her, they will be unbeatable.
Hillary Clinton for Pres and KARL ROVE as her VP!
I am appauled at the comments made by people who still have that old way of doing things.  I hope that the hand of God is in this presidential election and I hope that the people who have this backwards way of thinking be redeemed from bigotry and hatred once OBAMA is elected president of the United States.
Go Obama '08!
Yet another GOP state that Obama will use to try and claim the nomination.  Missippi DOES matter.  So does Idaho.  However, neither of them are going Democratic this year.

Hillary 08
I live in Texas where of course it is very conservative, however, I doubt my kids kids (im 22 with no kids at the moment) will see this state go blue. SO, I already know neither candidate will be able to carry TX in this election.
kw in philly- Look at the demographics and voting patterns in southern states.. Obama has no shot..I am a Democrat but I am "smart" enough to know that the african american vote wont be enough to swing southern states instead this election will come down to states like FL, OH, Nevada, Arizona and New Mexico.. Guess who is the stronger D candidate there. Statistics and demographics trump hope!!!
The only way it won't be in play is if the Democrats choose Hillary or if the Republicans attempt to keep African-Americans from voting again.
Hillary for president of ONLY the United States That Matter and who cares about the rest of you little states that I did not expect to win in the first place.

I find it funny that in the states that Obama was not expected to do well... he went to anyway and closed  huge gaps that separated the two nominee hopefuls... and the majority of the states that SHE was not expected to do well in she all but skipped over and headed to her "states that matter"

That being said... I find it arrogant for the RNC to think that they have a state in their pocket just because it has not voted contrary to their party in 30 years. He may have a "tough time in Mississipi" that is true... but never say never... It can come back to bite you hard!

OBAMA '08
Yes, as the above poster said, "Actions speak louder than words!" Take a look at Obama's actions--one education, on defense, on the economy (that the Clintons have destroyed with NAFTA--where do you think those steel mill and manufact. jobs went to--NAFTA--and by the way the Canadians found out it was the Clintons who concocted the who NAFTA-gate conspiricy.  If you do your research--Pennsylvania--you will have only one candidate.  However, don't believe me--records don't lie...only Clinton does that.

Look for yourself and you will see Obama is a "working man" like me, and like you.  Clinton is nothing but bootstrings from Bill.

Who's the best?  Obama's the best.  Take a look you sad Clintonites and you'll see that Obama did more in 8 months then most senators do in a lifetime of service.  That's the kind of president I want working for me.

The following information gathered from the Library of Congress on the Legislative experience Junior Senator Hillary Clinton and Junior Senator Barack Obama. Please Feel free to check these records for yourself and draw your own conclusion.

Senator Clinton, who has served only one full term, which is 6 years and another year campaigning, has authored and passed 20 twenty pieces of legislation in her term of six years into law. These bills can be found at (wwwthomas.loc.gov).  Senator Clinton has passed.

(1) Establish the Kate Mullany National Historic Site.
(2) Support the goals and ideals of Better Hearing and Speech Month.
(3) Recognize the Ellis Island Medal of Honor.
(4) Name courthouse after Thurgood Marshall.
(5) Name courthouse after James L. Watson.
(6) Name post office after Jonn A. O'Shea.
(7) Designate Aug. 7, 2003, as National Purple Heart Recognition Day.
(8) Support the goals and ideals of National Purple Heart Recognition Day.
(9) Honor the life and legacy of Alexander Hamilton on the bicentennial of his death.
(10) Congratulate the Syracuse Univ. Orange Men's Lacrosse Team on winning the championship.
(11) Congratulate the Le Moyne College Dolphins Men's Lacrosse Team on winning the championship.
(12) Establish the 225th Anniversary of the American Revolution Commemorative Program.
(13) Name post office after Sergeant Riayan A. Tejeda.
(14) Honor Shirley Chisholm for her service to the nation and express condolences on her death.
(15) Honor John J. Downing, Brian Fahey, and Harry Ford, firefighters who lost their lives on duty.

Only five of Clinton's bills are, more substantive.
(16) Extend period of unemployment assistance to victims of 9/11.
(17) Pay for city projects in response to 9/11
(18) Assist landmine victims in other countries.
(19) Assist family caregivers in accessing affordable respite care.
(20) Designate part of the National Forest System in Puerto Rico as protected in the wilderness preservation system.

She has a nice list, but note that these are The Fact's straight from the Senate Record; Therefore, it is not made up.

Now, It is time to post Senator Obama's record from the Library of Congress.I have to mention that Senator Obama's list is too substantive, one is coalesced to categorize. Since its alot, remember you can go to the Library of Congress website, and check it out yourself, but I am just summarizing his first 8 months.

During Senator Obama's first 8 eight months of elected service he sponsored over 820 bills.

He introduced 233 bills regarding healthcare reform,
125 bills on poverty and public assistance,
112 bills on crime fighting,
97 economic bills,
60 human rights and anti-discrimination bills,
21 ethics reform bills,
15 gun control,
6 veterans affairs and many others.
In his first year in the U.S. Senate, he authored 152 bills and co-sponsored another 427. These included:
(1)the Coburn-Obama Government Transparency Act of 2006 that became LAW,
(2)The Lugar-Obama Nuclear Non-proliferation and Conventional Weapons Threat Reduction Act that became LAW, (3)The Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act that passed the Senate,
(4)The 2007 Government Ethics Bill that became LAW,
(5)The Protection Against Excessive Executive Compensation Bill that is in committee just to name a few.

In all since he entered the U.S. Senate, Senator Obama has written 890 bills and co-sponsored another 1096. An impressive record, for someone who supposedly has no legislative record.  Read the facts and not emotion.

Once in a lifetime someone comes along and challenges the status quo through thoughtful intelligence.  Once in a lifetime someone comes along that speaks with such eloquence other are forced to listen. Once in a lifetime someone comes along who truly cares to empower the average American, instead of placate the privileged few. Once in a lifetime someone comes along that has the courage to challenge the special interest , a dangerous thing to do. Once in a lifetime someone comes along who lifts the spirit of all Americans!  The question is: are you really going to let this once in a lifetime opportunity to correct our bought and paid for governments (by special interest) pass you by--For all Americans.

A large percentage of Republicans nationally won't even show up to vote, what with McCain being their candidate. Hillary could entice many of them to show up, just to vote against her if she gets the Dem nomination, but that is unlikely. Obama will beat McCain with relative ease.
It would be a geuine transformational moment if the state governed by Trent Lott (resigned), Thad Cochrane and Haley Barbour were to go for Obama.  But for all those folks still living in FEMA trailers, or about to evicted from them, even a dream of an Obama presidency has to be an improvement over what they have now.
Wow, some ignorant comments on this thread.

I think the RNC's reasoning is hollow, but there's no question McCain is still highly favoured in Mississippi.  What is a fact is that at this stage, the electoral map and the electorate is very much in flux.  This cuts both ways, although definitely stronger against the Republicans.  Which way it will ultimately tack will depend on the final three months of the campaign.

What McCain does to Obama is force the Democrats to potentially work harder in places like PA, NJ, OH where they traditionally have had an easier time (I know OH is recently debatable on this point).  I also believe McCain puts FL out of reach for Dems unless he blunders or Obama surges.

What Obama does to McCain is force him to spend time and money defending states that Republicans haven't had to defend in several electoral cycles, since 1992 if not 1980.  This has a kernel of truth in the Deep South, but is even more relevant elsewhere.  Places like NH, ME, TX, CO, NC, VA, IN, ND, SD, NE, KS, NV, NM, IA, MO are much weaker for Republicans against Obama than they have been in some cases for decades.  There have been numerous polls reflecting this.

It's far too soon to make any conclusions.  However, barring a Spitzer-esque event/Dukakis-esque performance, this campaign has three results (not speculating on which is more likely):

- McCain ekes out a narrow win, ala Bush in 2004 (1-2  state EV margin); or Obama does the same.

- Obama wins a substantial, although not wipeout win, ala Clinton 1992 (75-125 EV margin)
Many republicans, like myself, are sick and tired of the Bush style of politics.  Even the most detached fool can see the big corporation/special interest buy-out of our poloticians and, up until now, we have felt as if we had no say in the matter.  Well, now we do.  I'm a true republican who believes in free trade without government interference, not the "new republican" who stands for whoever will stuff his/her pockets.  There is a bubbling unrest among the people of our nation and we can all feel it.  Something isn't right and I feel that Obama can help mend something that's been broken.
Republicans like me will be voting for Obama this election.

REPUBLICANS FOR OBAMA '08!!!
Obama won't win in a General Election. The only thing he will be President of is Farrakhan's church.

Clinton 08
Patty,sd,ca (Sent Tuesday, March 11, 2008 11:08 AM)

What happened to the kinder gentler Patty?  Guess you're a flip-flopper just like Hillary.  Surprise, surprise.
NOTE TO THE RNC:  And who would have thought the Republicans would go against most in their own party and Nominate McCain?  It's a crazy year and anything can happen.
Seriously. What more proof do people need that Obama is getting white, black, asian, hispanic etc votes? He has one in "white" states, "black" states, "hispanic" states, "asian" states. It doesn't matter what demographic you throw at him. Once people hear his message and learn the facts about him, they come away inspired and eager to vote for him. The only ones that seem to be against him are the ones that won't research the facts about him. He is NOT muslim! He does NOT support Farrakan! He IS patriotic! He did NOT take his oath with his hand on the Koran. He does NOT refuse to say the Pledge of Allegiance! He did NOT attend a islamic radical school! Stop believing and spreading these false rumors. I promise if you learn the rue facts about Obama you will want and be honored to have him as your president.
