Obama camp responds to Ferraro

Posted: Tuesday, March 11, 2008 2:58 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC’s Domenico Montanaro
The Obama campaign called for Geraldine Ferraro to step down as a member of the Clinton campaign’s finance committee for comments she made suggesting Obama’s race is why he’s a leading presidential candidate.

"If Obama was a white man, he would not be in this position," Ferraro told Torrance CA’s Daily Breeze Friday as we and others reported this morning. "And if he was a woman (of any color) he would not be in this position. He happens to be very lucky to be who he is. And the country is caught up in the concept."

The Clinton campaign had this response: "We disagree with her," Spokesman Howard Wolfson told Politico.

Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), called Ferraro a “good friend” and credits her with “clearing a path” for women, but added that “In the heat of the campaign though things get said that shouldn’t. It’s disappointing that Clinton supporters have tried to diminish” Obama. “To suggest that he’s getting preferential treatment” because of his race, she sad, “is out of line. I urge Sen. Clinton to call on advisers and supporters to change the tone of their campaign.”

Axelrod said the Clinton campaign’s response was not enough and that “she ought to be removed” from any responsibilities she has on the campaign’s finance committee or in any other way related to the campaign.

“Ferraro should be denounced and censured by the campaign,” Axelrod said. “Samantha [Power] resigned, because it was not consistent with the kind of campaign we want to run. We want a candidate and president who will live by their words.”

The Clinton campaign called for Obama foreign policy adviser Samantha Power to step down after it was revealed that she had told a Scottish newspaper that she felt Sen. Clinton was “a monster.”

Susan Rice, an Obama foreign policy adviser, this morning on MSNBC said that Ferraro’s comments were worse than Power’s. Axelrod declined to rank the two, but called Ferraro’s comments “part of an insidious pattern” by the campaign. Axelrod cited comments by Bill Shaheen, Bob Johnson and Clinton’s comments on 60 Minutes, in which Axelrod said she did not strongly attest to Obama’s Christianity -- even though the two senators had been to Christian prayer together.

“They need to set a tone and do what we’ve done,” Axelrod said, adding later, “When you wink and nod, you are telling your supporters that anything goes.”

'A real inflation of credentials'
The campaign also attacked Clinton’s foreign policy credentials again. They have recently called into question her role in bringing peace to Northern Ireland and her claim that she “negotiated open borders to let fleeing refugees into safety from Kosovo.”

“There’s a real inflation of credentials over there,” Axelrod said.

*** UPDATE *** On Ferraro's comments, Clinton said, "I do not agree with that. It is regrettable that any of our supporters on both sides, because we’ve both had that experience, say things that kind of veer off into the personal. We ought to keep this on the issues. There are differences between us. There are differences between our approaches on health care, on energy, on our experience, on our results that we’ve produced for people. That’s what this campaign should be about.

He responds for someone speaking the truth? He wouldn't be in the position he's in if he was white. That could be true for a lot of professionals that are black and got their leg up with the help of affirmative action. The picture of him in a turban wouldn't have been shown had he not put it on. His name would not be an issue had he not changed it to Barack from Barry. His middle name would not be an issue if it wasn't Hussein. He wouldn't be tied to Rezco if he didn't know him. He wouldn't be connected to a known bomber, William Ayers, if he wasn't friends with him. Obama may have not been such a hypocrite on Iraq had he not voted to fund the war 4 times.
So the Clinton campaign is saying that if Obama was white, Hillary would have won this months ago? But since he is black, voters feel sorry for him and donate $55 million in one month, give him over a 600,000 popular vote lead, 150 more pledged delegates and he wins twice as many states as Hillary has? All because he's black? How many more black voters, a solid base for the Democratic Party, can her campaign possibly alienate? Comments like this just strengthen my comittment not to vote for Hillary if she is the nominee.
Once again the HRC shows exactly the sort of sleazy campaign that she intends to run. One would think that after the effects of handing victory to the sleaziest politician in 2000 and 2004 the American people would have learned to avoid people who utilize these sorts of tactics.
Clinton sure better fire Ferrraro, or she's in big trouble ont his one.  I can't believe she hasn't ousted her yet.
Keep hammering the foreign policy record Axelrod.  There's no there, there.  Worse, she's lied about her involvement.  It's been classic "resume buffing."    Bullets flying on the way into Bosnia?  Not.  Hillary clinched the Northern Ireland peace deal?  What a laugh (and a gross insult to those who actually did the work on the ground).
I am quoting from the Huffington Post's Seth Grahame-Smith. "Senator Clinton has proven she cares more about Hillary than unity. More about defeating Obama than defeating Republicans. She has become a suicide-bomber happy to blow herself to bits as long as she takes everyone else with her." That about sums it up don't you think?
I hope one day the pendulum swings so far it will be a lucky day when a white male runs for office.

This black man is so obviously superior as a leader than this white woman.
This is becoming disgusting.  Ms Ferraro should be let go and immediately.  First, Gloria Steinem suggests that if John McCain were Joan McCain, Joan would have been villified for being captured, not lauded.  This is patently false.  If John McCain were Joan McCain, Joan would have received the same, if not better, treatment.  I am a feminist, but I also understand that if a woman were tortured and held hostage for years, this Country would be in agony over it.  We need to level the playing field, not set up a field where women need to be protected from men -- that is the OLD playing field, where paternalistic men feel the need to protect silly, fragile women.  That world of the old paternalism is going bye-bye fast (thank God) but when Ms Steinem and Ms Ferraro make statements like this to try and forcefed the lesser candidate on the American people simply because she is a woman, they set feminism BACK.   They set us all back.  I urge them all to stop this and stop it now.

Women will one day (soon) have the best candidate running for President.  When we do, let us hope this campaign of Senator Clinton using "victim" ideology and labelling almost every criticsm "sexism" has not lessened the chances of that woman who is the BEST candidate when her day comes to seek the Presidency of the United States of America.  Stop it now Senator Clinton.
Toby Hill,
It's time to collect your paycheck from the Clinton campaign.  Or, rather, since they can't pay you, to get the "recommendation" that you've been volunteering this spring for while you've been on break.
I think America is swept in Obama Mania, just as they were swept up in GWmania in 2000...  Bush i think said it perfectly when he said "hey listen when i ran i ran as a candidate of change"  anybody remember compassionate conservatism, and bringing change to beltway politics as usual?!?!?! I do...This fresh face of an outsider who had politics in his "blood" and an extremely high "likablity" rating blinded people to the fact that he was young, and green just like OBAMA.   I don't think Hillary is that much more experienced, but she did contribute to her husbands time in Arkansas, and D.C. and likely was consulting him on issues when that phone did ring in early morning hours.  Plus she has been tackling issues in the senate a lot longer than him, and has proven that she is a much more effective person put partisanship to the side to get the best shake for American's.  Sure she voted for a war that 100% of her constituents supported and clearly against her better judgement (if you've read her speech on authorization she clearly states that she authorized it ONLY as a bargaining chip against  Saddam), but she's also had to work in a Republican dominated congress...i.e. Vote for this authorization for using military against Saddam as a negotiating tactic, and we (republicans) will help you (democrats) get "such and such" passed.   I read a comment that said America needs to get back on track and get past the partisan ways.   Well i have news for you America...For every one thing you care about I can find 10 people who disagree with you, and vice versa.  American's disagree with eachother.   that is the nature of Humanity.  What makes washington work is electing people who have negotiating skills, and the forsight and wisdom to make tactical decisions that will better America for everyone.
To the Obama supporters:

Here in Illinois Gov Rod Blagojevich is still under investigation by Patrick Fritzgerald for corruption and he have not been release from this investigation. In rezko trial he is " Public Official A." So there may be an indictement of Gov. Rod Blagojevich as well. He also have a low approval rating and he also have alot of political enemies. What irony!

The Media is not going to tell you this; Just google Gov. Rod Blagojevich name.

You can't make this stuff up.

These items really need a strong look.  These are the kinds of things that matter.  Forget the words claiming success, and look at the true records.  It is no wonder Clinton believes words can be suspect ...  hers so frequently are just that.
He is just telling it like it is.
For the record, the Clinton campaign has plainly and repeatedly injected race into this election.  She hasn't yet personally commented on her supporter in Texas who said Obama's only fault is that he is black.  She wants race to be in this conversation because she sides with the majority (I'm talking numbers folks, just numbers).  In Ohio, of the individuals who claimed race played a role in their decision, 8 in 10 voted for Clinton; now that is math the Clinton campaign can understand!
ferraro is right, obama gets special treatment for being black, which is common here in the south.
it's interesting that no clinton supports are refuting any of the claims that hillary's "experience" is simply made up.
Tony in TX,
Actually, I believe that if Bill and Hillary have avoided using coded racist phrases, African-Americans won't simply flock to Obama on the basis of his skin. I have many black friends (I am white) who doubed Obama's abilities, but after Bill's aggressive race baiting, all of my buddies flocked to Obama.
You have to also put this issue into historical perspective, particularly our nation's very ugly history of racism and even sexism (don't forget that women could not vote until 1920). That must also have factored in influencing blacks to reject the old school politics and follow an inspirational leader like Obama in the hope of racial unity.
So let me get this straight.  By the time each of them fire everyone in their campaign, they will need new advisors and we can all apply for these jobs.  I think the way this is heading, it will be just the two of them running up the Art Museum steps dressed in warmup suits in Philly this April.
I can't be certain but I'd imagine that it is offensive to white people to be accused of being racists simply because they observe what is patent.

Of course race and gender are not indicators of ability and to vote for an individual simply because they are of a specific race or gender is absurd.....but to acknowledge that many people do base their votes on race and gender is not at all absurd.

Obama and Clinton both get votes based purely on race and/or gender.  It's a fact, get over it and let's move on to discuss issues that really matter.
What the people that Hillary are going to see from this and the remark from one of her leading supporters in TX is this: "HE GOT THIS FAR BECAUSE OF AFFIRMATIVE ACTION AND THAT BOY IS TAKING A JOB FROM A WHITE WOMAN! VOTE FOR ME AND PUT HIM BACK IN HIS PLACE" don't believe me watch how the hillary supporters will agree and try to spin it as an attack on Sen. Obama's supporters
Ferraro is right.  If Obama wants to pressure black superdelegates through surrogates to support Obama because he's black, and if he is always presumed to win states that have a large black Democratic presence, then admit that he would not have these preferences if he were white.  Just ask John Edwards.B.Graye
****************
Bravo B Graye.  Well Said!  Ferraro is 100% correct. Just ask the black populations of many states Obama has won.  They voted for him BECAUSE HE IS BLACK.

And if you Obama-ites want to call that racist, call it racist.  I call it honest.
Hmm... Geraldine Ferrarro would have been the first WHITE female Vice President if her CIC candidate won.

Did she have to "pass any special tests"

Obama immediately called for Samantha Power to step down. Why isn't HRC ready to do the same in Geraldine.

Could Wild Bill's past racial comment have some
thing to do with it?
If you don't understand the political mentality by now.......  You say whatever you need to say to make someone else look bad and to WIN!!!
There is however some truth to what Ferraro says.  If he was a woman, most people would be afraid to speak out because they would be "Sexist".  That's what Clinton has been going for.  "They're ganging up on a girl"  Experience should mean something, but Clinton doesn't have any experience (of her own) either.
Send us some quality candidates PLEASE!!!!!
WOW... the obama camp suddenly got outrage after MSNBC told them this was another good wedge issue for the camp to use before the Mississippi election against Hillary.

Ferraro had made these innocent NON-RACIAL comments awahile back and the obama camp wasn't offended until MSNBC made these comments a racial issue.

The timing is somewhat suspect, since this is the day 36% of the voters in Mississippi are African American.

Can anybody tell me why Bill Clinton picture is front and center on MSNBC TV.COM page with the caption
" POLITICAL SEX SCANDALS " when it's Spitzer who is caught in one at the present moment.

Do be this obvious MSNBC
The Clintons need to reject & denounce & Ferraro needs to resign from her position in the Clinton campaign. Her comment is horrendous!! I have no respect for the Clintons.
IT IS TRUE! IF HE WAS WHITE HE WOULD NOT BE THERE.
ALL THIS WALKING ON EGGSHELLS ABOUT HIM BEING BLACK.
HE HAS NO QUALIFICATIONS. NEVER COULD VOTE AGAINST HE WAR BECAUSE HE COULDN'T HIS CLAIM TO FAME... PLAGIARISM, LARRY SINCLAIR, FARRAKHAN, REZCO,AUCHI, WHAT A JOKE OF A CANDIDATE. HE HAS THE SAME SPEECHES AS DEVAL PATRICK, MALCOLM X, KEEP DRINKING THE KOOL-AID AND THERE WILL BE ANOTHER GEORGE BUSH IN THE WHITEHOUSE
How quickly you forget geraldine ferraro, that is exactly why you were picked for a vice presidential running mate you  hypocrite and I guess we can call you a racist as well right after what you said about Obama,is there any doubt in my mind.
And as for you Sen.Clinton, what are you going to do try and push it under the rug until you think it has blown over and not get rid of the woman as the Obama, campaign got rid of the woman who called you a Monster, which now I think you are.
And as and African American, from New Jersey, you would have had my vote if Obama, wasn't running and now that Ferraro, has said this you can bet you are going to have serious problems getting African American votes as long as you keep Ferraro, around starting in Mississippi, because we as African Americans, are really sick of the sleazy way you say and do things and the dirt bag staff you have as well who put these things out and in order for them to do that they need your consent right! or do you have your head in the sand!
I had thought that the Clinton response was fairly weak (and I'm trying to speak without too much bias).  Its a problems especially because she is so close to the campaign.

I actually think this is a lot worse than the Powers comment in that this really goes to the core of racism in our country where the Powers remark struck me as merely "catty" (unprofessional to be caught on it but fairly minimal as attacks go, really a venting kind of remark).

I really think strong repudiations should be enough and I'm not one to fire anyone on one remark.  Still I think Ferraro's role in the campaign needs to be very downscaled and it will probably still need to come under continued scrutiny.

The most unfortunate thing is that people really do still think that way, very sad.

I didn't know much about Ferraro before, but can't say I respect her now.
G F has only pointed out the obvious...would Oprah have been on stage for a white man (or woman) who espoused the same ideas that Sen Obama has?  Of course not - the basic messages  of both Dem candidates are so close  in ideaology that it is ludicrous to think that any educated individual has voted for either candidate without considering the "race card" - however isn't it intersting that so many whites have crossed the racial stereotypes to vote for Obama but so very few African-Americans have done the same...so who are the bigots here???
Some of you men just don't get it...oh yea, how could you possibly get it? All woman have been discriminated against since the beginning of time and still are. Mrs. Ferraro remembers being trashed the moment she was chosen as vice president, just BECAUSE SHES A WOMAN. Hillary is going through the same hate filled predjudice. Obama knows what this is like as a black male but he still gets the royal treatment because he is MALE. The people in this country still don't GET IT. Other countries are waaayyy ahead of us gender wise, shall we say. We aren't as progessive as we think, just ignorant.
I am not surprised that Hillary would use Ferraro to lodge a racist attack at Obama. Hillary will do anything to win. But I am glad that we found out   Ferraro is a racist. I'd rather know where people stand.  Let's just put her in the racist column, forget about her and call it a day. On to the issues!
Sorry, children, but Ferraro was right.  Obama would not be where he is today if he were not black.  Yes, he's charismatic, but c'mon -- a freshman senator with virtually no national name recognition who hadn't even completed 1/3 of his first term when he declared?  Comparing him to JFK to explain it is facile -- JFK was a national figure before he got into the Senate (war hero, famous & megarich dad, Congressman before Senate).  Barack Obama would not be in his current position were he white.

That being said, should she follow Samantha Power into the political dustbin for shooting off her mouth?  Absolutely.  Neither should have said what each said even if both were telling the truth (and most probably both were).  While this political season's "name-calling" is lame by historical standards, Power had to resign and Obama had to distance himself very carefully from her remarks, and Ferraro, who would never have been a VP candidate were she not a woman, should follow suit, and Clinton should distance herself from her.

Good for the goose and the gander, indeed.  Politics as usual on *both* sides.
Looks like Hillary, and her supporters, really want to see a President McCain.

Sen. McCain at least knows he has Hillarys' vote, since Hillary feels Sen. McCain is ready to be President but Sen. Obama isnt't.

Hillary, Thanks for 8 more years of Republican White House control.
What's funny is that not a single Obama supporter on this blog has actually been able to refute what she said.  It may be "un-PC," but if you can't see that it's true, then you need to take another look at his (lack of a) record.
I just heard on MSNBC that Nora Odonnell become amazed at how the democrats are 'divided' on the poll that shows when it comes to the super delegates 50% think they should go with the person with the most delegates and 45% think they should go with the better president. What Nora and this poll overlooks is a subset of the respondents that support the 'best president' think that person has also got the most number of delegates. In other words the two are not exclusionary and youcan have the most delegates and be the better president too.
sad but true - whoa there, lay off the PA bashing!  We aren't the ones who have picked Dubya twice in a row, and we won't be the ones to give Clinton the win she so desperately needs.  Oh, you'll see what's up in PA.  We're patient enough to wait our turn, and look at that, we get to decide.  My parents are lifelong Republicans, and I have their signed party switch forms right here to stick in the mailbox.  They aren't polling THAT in the MSM.

REPUBLICAN & INDEPENDENT PA FOLKS - Re-register to vote in the Democratic Primary here:
http://www.dos.state.pa.us/voting/lib/voting/02_voter_registration_applications/onlinevoterregformblank.pdf - it needs to be postmarked by March 24!
Another day, another excuse.

Hey Hillary, you’ve never…say, used your gender to try to get a vote have you?  Oh, you’re doing it now.

Hey Hillary, you never…say, got any extra mileage because a family member was famous or something did you?

Ferraro's comments weren't racist; they were ignorant. Stating that Obama may be getting some votes because he is black is a valid statement. He is also losing some votes because he is black, as the exit polls in Ohio suggested. The same is true for Clinton. She is most certainly getting some votes because she is an older woman. The problem with Ferraro's statement is this nonsense that Obama is where he is because he's black. Horse feathers! Tell Alan Keyes, Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton that! Where did being a black man get them in the presidential nomination process? Obama is succeeding where they failed because of the unique skill-set he brings to the table. This isn't about race or gender. It's about ideas and a shift towards rejecting the "norms". People want change and he seems to be the vehicle for change in most people’s eyes.
Duh (Sent Tuesday, March 11, 2008 3:45 PM):

Duh:

There is one problem with your theory. Obama is not Black. He is more Blaite or Whiack. His mother was white......his father was Black. That makes Obama Blaite or Whiack. So how many Blaites or Whiacks have voted for Obama so far? Sound stupid. Perhaps. But not anymore stupid then someone believing all Blacks who voted for Obama voted for him simply because he is Black. Or are you calling these people ignorant or something? If you are then at least also admit and state here that many ignorant women are voting for Hillary just because she is a woman. And she is all women. Ay least I don't think she is half woman and half man, as far as I know.
Sticks and stones will break my bones but names will never hurt me.  Obamaites please stop stomping your feet and play like nice children or else you'll all have to go home.
So, at first Obama didnt have a chance because white-American is not ready to elect a black president.

Now that he has dominated in some of the whitest places on earth (Iowa, Wyoming, etc) the argument is that it's BECUASE he is black????

Which is it??

Let's Remember that Hillary had the support of the VAST MAJORITY OF BLACKS, according to most polls, before Bill when nuts in SC.

Would it be fair to say "The only reason Hillary is in this position is because she's married to Bill Clinton"?

Would that be a fair statement???
oh wait, there may be something to that
I use to have the greatest respect for you Gov.Rendell, even though I am from New Jersey, with relatives in Philadelphia,it was like a second home city to me plus I am a Steelers, fan as well (Eagles-Suck).
But watching you on Meet the press and hearing what you say about Obama, and the African American vote in Pennsylvania, you are very sure of himself thinking that Clinton, has the Primary and African American, vote all locked up in her favor after what Ferraro, said do you really think that now Gov.Rendell you definitely under estimate the Black vote and Caucasian vote as well for Obama, why don't you come off your high horse ok you don't decide Governor for your state the people of your state do or did you forget were you came from and who put you in the Harrisburg, capital come down off your throne OK!
What part of her statement is NOT true??? He is fortunate to be the man he is. He is an eloquent speaker and a motivator but he is also black and I think our nation is ready to put racism behind us and elect a black man. If he were white he would not have the OVERWHELMING support that he has of the black voters. They would have the natural suspicious nature that we all have for politicians.
I don't understand the logic that Obama is only winning certain states because he's black. Does that mean the past presidents have won only because they're white? How can anyone call a black person racist for voting for someone who is black? They've been voting for white guys to be president ever since they could vote and now that there is a viable black canidate they're racist because they can identify with the man and hope he will improve racial equality. For decades minorities have struggled in this country based solely on their race and now they have the chance to elect a minority as the president. Who could blame them for voting for him?
Stewart,
How do you know MSNBC "told" Obama?
Those who don't know how to research for facts, and those who are closet bigots pretending to do reality checks will always quickly jump into the conclusion that the media is intentionally helping Obama win. The media has already gotten enough of Hillary after covering her since 1992 and realizing how polarizing andengative she is.
>>>>....Axelrod said she did not strongly attest to Obama’s Christianity -- even though the two senators had been to Christian prayer together.

That is a BLATANT LIE!!   and more race-baiting from the Obama camp!

http://www.talkleft.com/story/2008/3/11/143928/278

Ferraro's condescension is unbelievable. I am a white man who supports Obama because I like what he had to say.

Who is this racist old bitch to speak for me?
Millions and millions of white people (like me) voted for Obama (like me) because he's black?  Now I've heard everything.

I didn't realize that Ferraro was 1) working with the Clinton campaign and 2) racist scum.  She should quit or be fired, pronto.
To imply that candidates do not benefit (or take hits) from their race, gender, age, etc is silly. McCain will get votes from older white men because he is white.  Clinton will get votes from women because she is a woman, or NOT get votes because she is a woman.  Do 90% of blacks REALLY believe that Obama is the best candidate or are they voting for him because he is a black man?  The percentage of blacks supporting him is disproportionate to the other demographics....not that there is anything wrong with this, but it is naive to say that he is not benefiting from the overwhelming support of the black community because he is black!
