The Ferraro back and forth

Posted: Tuesday, March 11, 2008 5:46 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC's Domenico Montanaro
As the fallout from the Geraldine Ferraro back and forth continues, here's a chronology of some of the comments and statements from both sides:

Geraldine Ferraro, Torrance Daily Breeze, March 7:
"If Obama was a white man, he would not be in this position. And if he was a woman (of any color) he would not be in this position. He happens to be very lucky to be who he is. And the country is caught up in the concept."

The Clinton campaign's Howard Wolfson this morning to Politico:
"We disagree with her."

Obama adviser David Axelrod, in a conference call with reporters today:
“Ferraro should be denounced and censured by the campaign. Samantha [Power] resigned, because it was not consistent with the kind of campaign we want to run. We want a candidate and president who will live by their words.”

Hillary Clinton in Pennsylvania today:
"I do not agree with that. It is regrettable that any of our supporters on both sides, because we’ve both had that experience, say things that kind of veer off into the personal. We ought to keep this on the issues. There are differences between us. There are differences between our approaches on health care, on energy, on our experience, on our results that we’ve produced for people. That’s what this campaign should be about."

Obama spokesman Bill Burton this afternoon after Clinton's statement:
"With Senator Clinton's refusal to denounce or reject Ms. Ferraro, she has once again proven that her campaign gets to live by its own rules and its own double standard, and will only decry offensive comments when it's politically advantageous to Senator Clinton. Her refusal to take responsibility for her own supporter's remarks is exactly the kind of tactic that feeds the American people's cynicism about politics today and it's why Barack Obama's message of change has resonated so strongly in every corner of the country."

Barack Obama in an interview today with the Allentown Morning Call:
"I don't think Geraldine Ferraro's comments have any place in our politics or in the Democratic Party. They are divisive. I think anybody who understands the history of this country knows they are patently absurd. And I would expect that the same way those comments don't have a place in my campaign they shouldn't have a place in Senator Clinton's either."

Clinton Campaign Manager Maggie Williams in a statement released by the campaign after Burton's statement:
"In January, NBC’s Tim Russert confronted Senator Barack Obama with a four page memo from his campaign characterizing statements they claimed the Clinton Campaign had made about race.  Asked in hindsight whether he regretted pushing this story, Senator Obama said:

"Well, not only in hindsight, but going forward. I think that, as Hillary said, our supporters, our staff, get overzealous. They start saying things that I would not say. And it is my responsibility to make sure that we’re setting a clear tone in our campaign, and I take that responsibility very seriously, which is why I spoke yesterday and sent a message in case people were not clear that what we want to do is make sure that we focus on the issues."

"We agreed then. We agree today. Supporters from both campaigns will get overzealous.  Senator Clinton today reiterated that when asked about Geraldine Ferraro’s recent comments:

“I do not agree with that and you know it’s regrettable that any of our supporters on both sides say things that veer off into the personal. We ought to keep this focused on the issues. That’s what this campaign should be about.

"Senator Obama’s campaign staff seems to have forgotten his pledge. We have not.  And, we reject these false, personal and politically calculated attacks on the eve of a primary.  This campaign should be about the leadership we need for a better future and these attacks serve only to divide the Democratic Party and the American people.

Obama using racism to win in Mississippi!!

http://www.mydd.com/story/2008/3/11/9523/35765
So Clinton is allowed to demand the resignation of Samantha Power, and at the same time take offense that Obama's campaign would ask why she is not renouncing Ferraro's remark?

Double Standard (definition):  See Clinton Campaign
Now you all know why we call them Dummycrats.
Why was Hillary in such a hurry to leave Mississippi, when she has weeks to campaign in Pennsylvania?
"Senator Obama’s campaign staff seems to have forgotten his pledge."

Not more so than Hillary's campaign staff. Hillary basically said, "I disagree" which is nowhere near a denouncement of Ferraro's racially charged gaffe.

In reality, Ferraro is lucky to be a white woman, consider how badly Joe Biden was slaughtered for a far smaller offense ("clean and articulate" comment).
African Americans are not not voting for Hillary because she is white.  We are voting for Obama because of his stances, policies, and his integrity.  I attended one of his rallies, and I was very impressed with him.  I looked around and there were people of all races and ethnic groups.  Everyone appeared to be on the same page.  It made me feel really really good.  I am an African American with a graduate degree. I have attended luncheons, parties, and other social events with caucasian co-workers. but I never felt that there was a real connection.  While I was at that Obama rally, for the first time I felt a real connection.  It made me feel really good, and for the first time, I felt proud to be an American.  I am not saying that I hate this country, that has never been the case, I just never felt that I was completely a part of it.  I say this because it appears that white america is extending its hands to black america whole heartedly.  I finally felt embraced.  It was beginning to seem as though racism was dying out, and was not as bad as I thought.  But after witnessing all that the Clintons have been doing and the comments on this blog, I guess I was wrong.  And I say this with a sincere sad heart.  I almost feel like crying.  Black people have always voted for white people, but the moment we vote for another black person, it is called racism.  Does that seem fair to you.  Since white americans out number black americans, probably half of his votes are from blacks and the other half from whites when you look at the actual numbers.  I guess I was bamboozled.  I thought America was changing.  But, I do want to thank the white americans who have seen past the color of our skin and see what we are truly capable of doing.
The Democratic party is looking less and less like a political party, and more and more like a Jerry Springer party. Describing them as being 'Trailer Trash" is a put down to real 'Trailer Trash'.
Senator Obama's camp have forgotten their pledge!!! Sentaor Obama's advisor resigns and Hillary poo poos Ferraro's remarks and says Obama should stick with the issues. The more Hillary or any of her staff including Bill open their mouths the more they make people want to barf.

Senator Obama should invite Powers back on to his staff ASAP and let her use the monster label regarding Hillary any time she wants too.
What's funny, or maybe not so funny, is this is the best the Democrats have to offer. No wonder Bush won two terms. If he could run again, he'd win this year in a landslide too.
Although it goes without saying that you can’t boil a person down to his/her race—we are all so much than the sum of our parts, including our skin color, an integral part of who Obama is is due to the richness of his background and heritage, his race.

I have read that Obama has always felt like a bit of an outsider because he straddled two worlds--the world of his white Kansas heritage and of his Black Kenyan father.  His years spent living in Hawaii and in Indonesia have made him who he is--someone dedicated to bringing people together despite their skin color or beliefs.

So, yes, Obama is African-American and has surely gotten votes because of his skin color (from white people as well as black people), but none of that changes the fact that he is as successful and inspiring as he is not simply because of the color of his skin, but because of how his heritage has molded him into the impressive, intelligent man he is today.

While you can technically argue that were he a white man, he may not be where he is today, were Obama a white man, he wouldn't be the man we are so inspired by.  To imply that he has succeeded merely because of his skin color simplifies and overlooks the beautiful complexities of his background and the degree to which he represents so many of us, regardless of what color we are.

I am so proud of my state for choosing Obama, and yes, that is in part because he is a black man.  This is extremely important to the future of our nation.  We need to cross this line, and this is the man who can, will, and should do it.

PS--sorry if this gets posted on 2 threads.
>>>>Less than one second. That's how long it took Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton to answer, "Of course not," to Steve Kroft's question on 60 Minutes about whether she thought Sen. Barack Obama was a Muslim. You can time it yourself by watching the clip at YouTube.

Still, that didn't stop MSNBC's Chris Matthews from complaining on-air last week that it took Clinton "the longest time" to answer Kroft's question.

http://mediamatters.org/columns/200803110002

----------------
The media loves to create conflict to drive up ratings. Kroft wasn't satisfied with Hillary's very direct "of course not" answer and kept pressing her as if he had info she didn't have.
She finally responded with "of course not" - meaning Obama was not a Muslim.  But according to Obamabots - nothing she said was satisfactory.

Obama is a big sissy. If he thinks it's rough now, wait until the Republicans get a hold of him. They don't have to lie either, just telling the truth about Obama will be enough to crush him this fall. Obama will be found hiding under his office desk.
Why is there nothing further on the Irish Peace Accord"

As for the above story...what would Maggie Williams say if John Kerry or Al Sharpton came out and said "Hillary is only where she is because she is a woman...or better yet...She only cried and got away with it because she was a woman" (Just for the record...I do not feel that way)

and as far as Ferraro's comment she is obviously not a good listener (becasue if nothing else if yuo close your eyes Obama is the best political motivator and speaker I have ever heard in my life... and doesn't his blackness and her being a woman ...kind of cancel that argument out statistically in the voting population anyway).

Perhaps Maggie Williams should have broguht that memo out last week.

: )
Is it that Hillary Clinton thinks this doesn't matter? Clinton thinks it doesn't matter -- that her top supporters are obviously racist?

Hillary Clinton "disagrees" with racists, but she is happy to have their support, she does not reject and denounce them?

Wow.
She is purposely attempting to divide the democratic party for her own benefit.  She is playing her supporters for fools.  If you do not see this by now, then you can not be very bright.
Blacks have always voted for whites in elections.  Why are they called racists because they are supporting someone who is black?
More LYING and race baiting by Obama's campaign manager today  -

>>>>[T]his has been a pattern that we've seen throughout the campaign, whether it was the Bill Shaheen incident, the Bob Johnson incident, Sen. Clinton's own inexplicable unwillingness to make a direct statement on '60 Minutes' about Sen. Obama's Christianity, even though they've shared prayer groups together in Congress. All of it is part of an insidious pattern that needs to be addressed.

http://www.talkleft.com/story/2008/3/11/16649/9376

Hillary did make a DIRECT STATEMENT on 60 Minutes that Obama was a Christian.
But Obama's surrogates and supporters continue lying.

Why aren't the white women voting for Hillary called sexists?
http://twocanpete.blogspot.com
If any white man had made that comment he would immediately have been branded a racist and she and her ilk would have been the first ones on the band wagon, pitch forks and brooms in hand screaming for blood.
Bad form, Hillary. Bad form.
This was indeed a calculated political tactic.  All of America should be outraged!
It can't just be me, right?- Yes- Obama stated that type of conduct was unacceptable AND that he takes that "responsibility very seriously"- which is why Mrs. Powers was forced to resign after the statements she made.

If Clinton's campaign has NOT forgotten that pledge- then why has she not shown the same type of RESPONSIBILITY and 'rejected and denounced' the statements of Mrs. Ferraro?  They would rather attack Obama rather than the 'overzealous' surrogate who actually made the attacks.

Again, another example of HRC unable to walk the walk-which is why she is slowly seeing her chance at POTUS '08 slip away.
Clinton campaign's statements here are a half step.
Reminding everyone that "regrettable statements" have been made by both sides, is a neat way of deflecting attention, but it doesn't change the fact that Geraldine Ferraro is flat wrong and as a Clinton surrogate that reflects on the Clinton campaign.

You are kidding yourself and both candidates are being disengenuous to suggest that there isn't 'some' affects of race and/or gender in this election process.  Part of the 'real' problem in America today is the 'chip on the shoulder' attitude of some with regard to some topics.  Does this mean that Obama is unqualified due to his mixed race . . . No!  Does it mean that Hillary is unqualified due to her gender . . . No.  But there is no denying that these are there in front of everyone and they do make a different . . . good or bad . . . a difference.  Both take advantage of their particular situation as the situations arise . . . again good or bad!  A 'good leader' in my mind won't take advantage of this . . . which neither Obama or Hillary can take claim to . . . they both use their particular 'situation' to suit their desires which is to be the nominee for the Democratic party.  The best thing that either candidate could do is to acknowledge themselves as to who they are and what impacts, good and bad, that this may have on their campaigns and America in general.  We really need to mature and grow through this kind of stuff.  We don't need opportunists in the White House . . . we need honest and sincere leaders who have integrity and scruples.  Take it for what is worth!
It's just amazing.  Instead of condeming outrageous remarks, the Clinton campaign is flipping out an interview script.

Whatever happened to Clinton's 'Reject' and 'Denounce' recommendation.  Oh wait, rules do not apply to the Clintons.
Hillary Clinton has a problem taking responsibility for her actions (vote for Iraq) and for the actions of her representatives.  She sounds like a real Bush to me.
Hillary Clinton is only a Presidential candidate because her husband cheated on her repeatedly and women feel sorry for her.  What they forget is that in the process Hillary Clinton demonized the women and blamed her husbands "cigar" incident on a "Vast Right Wing conspiracy".   I am a woman and she makes me sick.  There are so many other women out there worth admiring that it sets women back for her to even run.
Wow! How much more devisive can she become?  Look at how what her camp is causing Obama and Hillary supporters to go after each other.  We don't even know each other.
When you think about it, the comment is so far off what Hillary has been saying all along "He's not fit to be Commander and Chief, He's just speeches. . ."  No wonder Hillary didn't have a real problem with a racist comment.

However, I personally would want a working man like me to be president.  Obama is a working man's man. Let me prove it---check out the record below.

Who's the best?  Obama's the best.  Take a look you sad Clintonites and you'll see that Obama did more in 8 months then most senators do in a lifetime of service.  That's the kind of president I want working for me.

The following information gathered from the Library of Congress on the Legislative experience Junior Senator Hillary Clinton and Junior Senator Barack Obama. Please Feel free to check these records for yourself and draw your own conclusion.

Senator Clinton, who has served only one full term, which is 6 years and another year campaigning, has authored and passed 20 twenty pieces of legislation in her term of six years into law. These bills can be found at (wwwthomas.loc.gov).  Senator Clinton has passed.

(5) Name courthouse after James L. Watson.

Only five of Clinton's bills are, more substantive.

(17) Pay for city projects in response to 9/11
(18) Assist landmine victims in other countries.
(19) Assist family caregivers in accessing affordable respite care.
(20) Designate part of the National Forest System in Puerto Rico as protected in the wilderness preservation system.

She has a nice list, but note that these are The Fact's straight from the Senate Record; Therefore, it is not made up.

Now, It is time to post Senator Obama's record from the Library of Congress.I have to mention that Senator Obama's list is too substantive, one is coalesced to categorize. Since its alot, remember you can go to the Library of Congress website, and check it out yourself, but I am just summarizing his first 8 months.

During Senator Obama's first 8 eight months of elected service he sponsored over 820 bills.

He introduced 233 bills regarding healthcare reform,
125 bills on poverty and public assistance,
112 bills on crime fighting,
97 economic bills,
60 human rights and anti-discrimination bills,
21 ethics reform bills,
15 gun control,
6 veterans affairs and many others.
In his first year in the U.S. Senate, he authored 152 bills and co-sponsored another 427. These included:
(1)the Coburn-Obama Government Transparency Act of 2006 that became LAW,
(2)The Lugar-Obama Nuclear Non-proliferation and Conventional Weapons Threat Reduction Act that became LAW, (3)The Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act that passed the Senate,
(4)The 2007 Government Ethics Bill that became LAW,
(5)The Protection Against Excessive Executive Compensation Bill that is in committee just to name a few.

In all since he entered the U.S. Senate, Senator Obama has written 890 bills and co-sponsored another 1096. An impressive record, for someone who supposedly has no legislative record.  Read the facts and not emotion.

I agree with Senator Obama's sentiments that the facts indicate that Ms. Ferraro's statements are indeed absurd. I dont think however that Ms. Ferrero should be forced out of the campaign, just like I didnt think the Clinton campaign should  of demanded the resignation of Samantha Power for a comment she intended to be 'of the record'. And in fact from the above-referenced quotations, it does not appear that the Obama campaign is asking that she be removed only that her riduculus statements be denounced. Another case of the trademark Clinton hipocracy. The only Clintons principle, whatever gets us in power is the right thing to do.
The Clinton camp will use the race card when it suits them.  Bill used it in S.C. and others have also used it.  With Clinton supporters, they will do anything to win.
Geraldine was a benefit of AA,  that is the only reason Mondale but her on the ticket.  You can count on one hand how many black senators/governors there has been since reconstruction.  So AA has not help black men crash the glass ceiling in National politics.  If someone said the this of Clinton, we would rightly call it sextist so this too is racist.
When this political campaign began, I thought that America was ready for a black Pres. But, we're not. It is just a divisive issue and if Obama doesn't win, there will be rioting. We're not ready.
Maggie...put the pipe down sweetheart. Your campaign's "pledge" is an even bigger joke then that joint-ticket nonsense. Keep selling your soul to ther devil dearest. Tell Hills to give a howdy and a hey to Spitzer (wink wink).
Why should we be surprised about sen. Clinton thinking its ok for her supporters to say anything they want. This just continues to show her lack of morals, of cousre i am just one of the foolish voters from one the small states that do not exist according to her team. Just remember one day she might need us nobodys but then we will be important again. If we fall for her back stabbing attitude then we are as stupid as she thinks we are. what would be foolish would be putting faith in her promises tho fix all the problems she says she will fix, becouse she will need rupublicans and those unimportant democrates in congress to get things done. Unless you have a magic wand you need unity in the party and she doesnt understand this and will never have this. Which means nothing will get done and she stills has an out it wasnt my falt I tried so I will blame it on someone else. Kinda like what she says now.
OMG!!

It's been way over due, that someone finally has the balls, to say what everyone else knows, but won't even dare think, for fear some left wing guilt ridden liberals or blacks would hear....

That Barack Obama would not be where he is at today if he was not black. He gets 9/10 black votes, anywhere else except this would be viewed as extreme racism.

But not by the above groups, they define, own, and decide what's  racism. That includes the 3:00am phone call... That ran in Texas and Ohio, Chris Matthews, says it's racism.... A quote right out of his mouth...

Bill Clinton saying the word "fairy tale" is racism. Hillary Clinton saying President LBJ, made some pro AA laws is racism.

Saying Jesse Jackson won South Carolina twice is racism....

The hypocrisy rages and no one is willing to say a word because the yellow belly spineless pundits and politicians ram it down our throats.

It's just time to speak the truth.....

The black vote has carried him, he has got a lot of other votes, but the bottom line is he would have been dead in the water by now if he did not get 9/10 of AA votes.  That's just the way it is. You can't change it. The numbers are not lying, only the pundits and politicians are....

Geez, I hope people in America wake up and smell the Hillary coffee and discover that it STINKS. Shame on you, Hillary Clinton!  Why is what's good for the goose not good for the gander? You're now digging your own political grave, and good riddance!
At the beginning of this campaign, I gave everyone the benefit, though I personally didn't like Hillary, though I had no serious problem with Bill. I didn't know anything about Obama at all. After weeks of the race, Hillary has run out of the benefit of the doubt I had given her. I honestly wanted to give her a chance, so that I felt good about supporting her as the nominee if she got it, even though I support Obama. At this point, she has made it nearly impossible for me to do so. I may be voting Republican for the first time in my life. That's a pretty effective campaign she's run to drive me away, and I know I'm not alone.
I see no responsibility on the part of Hillary when her people make racist comments. I see no responsibility on the part of the media of putting these comments on front page.

I do believe racist comments trumps monster comments.

We truly live in a racist country.

We will work hard in Philly to put an end to the lies Hillary puts out on the campaign trail. Hillary will not win Philly or Pennsylvania.

Obama "08"
The Clinton campaign is ACTUALLY standing by Ferraro's statements?!

Oh.  My.  God.
Perception is often more powerful than fact. Forget the phony apologies, the seed was planted, 'mission accomplished'. Much like the leaked photo of Obama in Arab garb and the rumor Obama may really be a muslim the Clinton campaign is relying more on perception in an effort to curb Obama's momentum, the art of divide and conquer, pitting gender and race against each other at opportune times. Clinton knows she will not get the black vote so she must get a great majority of the white vote in order to gain some ground, so she cleverly plays the race card through a surrogate........WICKED
wow...Hillary Clinton can have her cake and eat it as well can't she.  She can call for a resignation for an Obama advisor for calling her what everyone thinks "monster" but won't fire Geraldine Ferraro for her coments on Obama.  Wake up Clinton supporters how can you justify what she does and still feel good about how she will handle this country.  How can you feel so passionate about someone who is as 2 faced as she has shown in the past but right now with this situation.  Obama accepted the resignation saying we will not accept nor tolerate this kind of behavior and Hillary says the same thing but won't ask for her resignation.

Again,wow unbelievable
HRC just doesn't care.

Bring back Susan Power! She's the only one who can see Hillary for what she is.
Geraldine Ferraro --"Denounce and Reject"
--"Denounce and Reject"
--"Denounce and Reject" --"Denounce and Reject"
--"Denounce and Reject"
Regardless of how you feel about what Ms. Ferraro said, it was a factual statement.  Mr. Obama is not qualified to be president.  But because he is a black man, he is held to lower bar.  This does not promote the African American cause.
Vile and disgusting.  The Clinton campaign has brought Democratic politics to a new low.  Hillary can add this accomplishment to her puny resume, but I wouldn't be proud of it.
Hillary Now knows if she can't Win ( Steal)the nomination, her Senate seat in New York will be harder for to defend in 4 year's. New Yorker's have seen her for what she is, A Racist Bitch, yes i said it(if it get's posted). Her calculated political career will sonn be over.Thank God, No More Clinton's in American Politic's!
Let's pretend that Barack Obama had been asked about the rumor that Hillary Clinton was a lesbian.

Hillary Clinton is supposedly a lesbian or at least bisexual. This has been rumored for years because she is a strong woman and all strong women are gay aren't they? And c'mon look and listen.

OBAMA: Of course not. I mean, that's--you know, there is not basis for that. You know, I take her on the basis of what she says. And, you know, there isn't any reason to doubt that.

KROFT: And you said you'd take Senator Clinton at her word that she's not a lesbian

OBAMA: Right. Right.

KROFT: You don't believe that she's a lesbian or implying? Right.

OBAMA: No. No. Why would I? No, there is nothing to base that on, as far as I know.

KROFT: It's just scurrilous --

OBAMA: Look, I have been the target of so many ridiculous rumors. I have a great deal of sympathy for anybody who gets, you know, smeared with the kind of rumors that go on all the time.

Hmmmm, now it looks a little like EQUIVOCATING.

She should have DENOUNCED AND REJECTED THIS.
She should DENOUNCE AND REJECT the comment made by Geraldine Ferraro.
