The Ferraro back and forth

Posted: Tuesday, March 11, 2008 5:46 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC's Domenico Montanaro
As the fallout from the Geraldine Ferraro back and forth continues, here's a chronology of some of the comments and statements from both sides:

Geraldine Ferraro, Torrance Daily Breeze, March 7:
"If Obama was a white man, he would not be in this position. And if he was a woman (of any color) he would not be in this position. He happens to be very lucky to be who he is. And the country is caught up in the concept."

The Clinton campaign's Howard Wolfson this morning to Politico:
"We disagree with her."

Obama adviser David Axelrod, in a conference call with reporters today:
“Ferraro should be denounced and censured by the campaign. Samantha [Power] resigned, because it was not consistent with the kind of campaign we want to run. We want a candidate and president who will live by their words.”

Hillary Clinton in Pennsylvania today:
"I do not agree with that. It is regrettable that any of our supporters on both sides, because we’ve both had that experience, say things that kind of veer off into the personal. We ought to keep this on the issues. There are differences between us. There are differences between our approaches on health care, on energy, on our experience, on our results that we’ve produced for people. That’s what this campaign should be about."

Obama spokesman Bill Burton this afternoon after Clinton's statement:
"With Senator Clinton's refusal to denounce or reject Ms. Ferraro, she has once again proven that her campaign gets to live by its own rules and its own double standard, and will only decry offensive comments when it's politically advantageous to Senator Clinton. Her refusal to take responsibility for her own supporter's remarks is exactly the kind of tactic that feeds the American people's cynicism about politics today and it's why Barack Obama's message of change has resonated so strongly in every corner of the country."

Barack Obama in an interview today with the Allentown Morning Call:
"I don't think Geraldine Ferraro's comments have any place in our politics or in the Democratic Party. They are divisive. I think anybody who understands the history of this country knows they are patently absurd. And I would expect that the same way those comments don't have a place in my campaign they shouldn't have a place in Senator Clinton's either."

Clinton Campaign Manager Maggie Williams in a statement released by the campaign after Burton's statement:
"In January, NBC’s Tim Russert confronted Senator Barack Obama with a four page memo from his campaign characterizing statements they claimed the Clinton Campaign had made about race.  Asked in hindsight whether he regretted pushing this story, Senator Obama said:

"Well, not only in hindsight, but going forward. I think that, as Hillary said, our supporters, our staff, get overzealous. They start saying things that I would not say. And it is my responsibility to make sure that we’re setting a clear tone in our campaign, and I take that responsibility very seriously, which is why I spoke yesterday and sent a message in case people were not clear that what we want to do is make sure that we focus on the issues."

"We agreed then. We agree today. Supporters from both campaigns will get overzealous.  Senator Clinton today reiterated that when asked about Geraldine Ferraro’s recent comments:

“I do not agree with that and you know it’s regrettable that any of our supporters on both sides say things that veer off into the personal. We ought to keep this focused on the issues. That’s what this campaign should be about.

"Senator Obama’s campaign staff seems to have forgotten his pledge. We have not.  And, we reject these false, personal and politically calculated attacks on the eve of a primary.  This campaign should be about the leadership we need for a better future and these attacks serve only to divide the Democratic Party and the American people.

Wow!!!It's a lucky thing, to be a black man, in America!! Who knew?

..now ask yourselves in all your "self-righteousness". "How many of you would switch?"

quit demonizing in accordance to preference...it makes you look well...like who you really are...dishonest with YOURSELF!!

So yes, Geraldine! There is a double standard. A lesser known white man running against Hillary Clinton would have lost a long time ago. A black man running against Hillary Clinton, technically, should be DOA too. So a black man had to do more than any white man could do. He had to overcome the fact that he was:

A) black

B) had a Islamic name

C) was a relative unknown

When did puesdo-social conformity take it's rightful place in your mindset?

Please, don't think! Your comments speak for themselves...

REJECT AND DENOUNCE!!
REJECT AND DENOUNCE!!
RACISM
PREJUDICE
SEXISM
EVERYTHING CLINTON STANDS FOR
REJECT AND DENOUNCE

The more this goes on, the less proud I am to be a woman and the more proud I am to be a person of mixed ethnic backgound.  Thanks, Hillary.  It's great to know I have wasted so much of my life working for women's rights.  You're definitely not the role model I would want for my daughter.  And thank you, Barack, my children can be proud of their diverse AMERICAN background.  It's like I've always told them: you are what you are and lies and deceptions, in the end, can not change that.
Reject and Denounce Racism--Hilary.

Only then can you Reject and Denounce Sexism
I believe that Geraldine Ferraro's comments are on target.  As an African-American female, I know that many of my African American friends are voting for Barack Obama solely because he is a liberal Black Democrat.  Had Barack Obama not been in the race, African-Americans would have largely gone for Hillary Clinton.  I know of very few African-Americans who supported any of the White male Democrats during the 2008 primary.  Many feel that our time has come to have our first Black president, and we're going to claim it.  As a result, I do believe that Geraldine Ferraro is correct in her assessment.  I do not think that it is a crime to have an honest discussion about race, which I believe is what Ferraro was doing.  Barack is Black, and it is a major factor in his appeal to African Americans.
I am all for Hillary Clinton.  I think she would make a wonderful Commander and Chief.  She could handle any situation that comes up in the White House.  She has much more experience and I would feel totally confident in her abilities as President of the US.
this was so dumb if you look at the facts not the why you may feel are think first he is a white man as much as he is black unless you think that if you have black in you , you lose your white side that is dumb second running for office and being black hasnt help very many blacks there is only one black governor senator etc... so when being black got you a office but the speaker of the house is a woman plus on that christian stuff i think he is the only one being ask about that why dont we know where mcain goes to church are hillary why didnt we see the grab hillary , are bill are bush wore just barack when they all have wore grab before this stuff is so lame  if all you can do is slander someone they must be doing something right plus theres been other blacks running for office but blacks didnt vote for them they voted for whites
All this verbage on race and sexsist expressions is not what the campaign is about but the past of any person does shape their future and so far Obama has not had a very sound judgment on his aquaintenances Rezko always comes to mind for if it was not for that freindship he would not have had the fundmental quanity to make a run for the white house. Money truly does talk. There is more to this story than is yet told.

When you think about it, the comment is so far off what Hillary has been saying all along "He's not fit to be Commander and Chief, He's just speeches. . ."  No wonder Hillary didn't have a real problem with a racist comment.

However, I personally would want a working man like me to be president.  Obama is a working man's man. Let me prove it---check out the record below.

Who's the best?  Obama's the best.  Take a look you sad Clintonites and you'll see that Obama did more in 8 months then most senators do in a lifetime of service.  That's the kind of president I want working for me.

The following information gathered from the Library of Congress on the Legislative experience Junior Senator Hillary Clinton and Junior Senator Barack Obama. Please Feel free to check these records for yourself and draw your own conclusion.

Senator Clinton, who has served only one full term, which is 6 years and another year campaigning, has authored and passed 20 twenty pieces of legislation in her term of six years into law. These bills can be found at (wwwthomas.loc.gov).  Senator Clinton has passed.

(1) Establish the Kate Mullany National Historic Site.
(2) Support the goals and ideals of Better Hearing and Speech Month.
(3) Recognize the Ellis Island Medal of Honor.
(4) Name courthouse after Thurgood Marshall.
(5) Name courthouse after James L. Watson.
(6) Name post office after Jonn A. O'Shea.
(7) Designate Aug. 7, 2003, as National Purple Heart Recognition Day.
(8) Support the goals and ideals of National Purple Heart Recognition Day.
(9) Honor the life and legacy of Alexander Hamilton on the bicentennial of his death.

(14) Honor Shirley Chisholm for her service to the nation and express condolences on her death.

Only five of Clinton's bills are, more substantive.
(16) Extend period of unemployment assistance to victims of 9/11.
(17) Pay for city projects in response to 9/11
(18) Assist landmine victims in other countries.
(19) Assist family caregivers in accessing affordable respite care.
(20) Designate part of the National Forest System in Puerto Rico as protected in the wilderness preservation system.

She has a nice list, but note that these are The Fact's straight from the Senate Record; Therefore, it is not made up.

Now, It is time to post Senator Obama's record from the Library of Congress.I have to mention that Senator Obama's list is too substantive, one is coalesced to categorize. Since its alot, remember you can go to the Library of Congress website, and check it out yourself, but I am just summarizing his first 8 months.

During Senator Obama's first 8 eight months of elected service he sponsored over 820 bills.

He introduced 233 bills regarding healthcare reform,
125 bills on poverty and public assistance,
112 bills on crime fighting,
97 economic bills,
60 human rights and anti-discrimination bills,
21 ethics reform bills,
15 gun control,
6 veterans affairs and many others.
In his first year in the U.S. Senate, he authored 152 bills and co-sponsored another 427. These included:
(1)the Coburn-Obama Government Transparency Act of 2006 that became LAW,
(2)The Lugar-Obama Nuclear Non-proliferation and Conventional Weapons Threat Reduction Act that became LAW, (3)The Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act that passed the Senate,
(4)The 2007 Government Ethics Bill that became LAW,
(5)The Protection Against Excessive Executive Compensation Bill that is in committee just to name a few.

In all since he entered the U.S. Senate, Senator Obama has written 890 bills and co-sponsored another 1096. An impressive record, for someone who supposedly has no legislative record.  Read the facts and not emotion.
Open message to the voters of Pennsylvania. The rest of the country is looking to you to speak up against the lies, racism, dirty politics of Senator Clinton. We are working for Obama to end the nastiness of the past and bring this country together in a way that it has always promised it could be, inclusive, open, attentive to the young, the old, the poor, the striving. Senator Clinton will say anything to be elected. Pennsylvania, do you really want 8 more years of Bush, Clinton, Bush, Clinton? We're looking to you to surprise us all.
"Watch what we do, not what we say."
-- Nixon administration
Hillary Clinton continues to change her beliefs based upon what is convenient to her.  Last week, she called for the resignation of a very intelligent woman on Barack's campaign who called her a monster.  This week, when someone associated with her campaign says something inappropriate about Barack, her response is only "tsk, tsk, Barack, let's focus on the issues".  Hillary, why don't you stick to one message - but don't worry, the American public already gets your message -- Win at whatever cost! and guess what -- we'll vote against you all the time!
Hillary Clinton's campaign is once again showing it's racism. Ferraro's comments were racist, pure and simple. If a man had that comment, the media would have labelled it a racist comment.
I hear everyone saying things like black people vote for white candidates all the time. If that were true, than how can these two facts also be true. 90% of Predominately black cities have black politicians, and are also democrat. Also note that 90% of predominately white cities have white politicians and are republican. Make no mistake I do not fully agree with Geraldine Ferraro, but is she really all wrong. We are talking about a man who before the 2004 DNC, nobody and I mean nobody had ever heard of. He has had all of 2 succesful acts to pass congress. So what makes him so popular? He hasn't been in politics long enough to fully know the rules of the game. His popularity stems from the fact that..., yes he is a young black man, trying to accomplish a feat that has never been accomplished before. He also sounds really good saying it.All this being said I do admire Barack Obama the man. However I have not seen enogh of Barack Obama the politician to trust him. In this case I do think that Hilary is the better man for the job. Besides wouldn't it be great to be able to call Bill Clinton the first Lady.
WHAT??!!! The last line of Clinton's campaign manager's statement is backwards (again, the Clint-rovian campaign trying to repeat something enough times to make it stick)

...anyone who would fall for this - OR for the Clintons and their serrogates trying to throw race into a campaign that is NOT about race - anyone who would fall for these things should be embarrassed.
-
HILLARY SHOWS HER POLITICAL IGNORANCE AND ARROGANCE BY HER RESPONSE TO FERRARO'S RACIAL STATEMENT.
-
Hillary should denounce AND reject Ferrarro's words and support!
The Clintons counted on the African-American vote to sweep them into the nomination, and it didn't happen.  Frankly, Bill Clinton and other surrogates are responsible for the size of that loss.  They're peeved, that's all.

As a 61-year-old WASP woman, however, I am appalled at the self-pity of these so-called feminists.  Mercy, they really need to get over their perceived victimhood!  Take a look at other places in the world and realize just how lucky they are.
Ferraro IS ABSOLUTELY RIGHT!!!

It's ok to be sexist, but not ok to be a racist. Just look at all the sexist remarks from the Obama camp about Hillary!

Self righteous Obama-fanatics MAKE ME SICK!!!

GET REAL!

HILLARY 08!!!
I wish Michelle Obama were running then I could vote for her.  Hillary and Geraldine don't get it.  We are trying to move beyond race and gender and all other divisions in society to reform politics.  It's a risky move.  But we still have Hope - and Barack.
It's true.  If Barack Obama weren't a black man he wouldn't be where he is right now.

He would have secured the nomination already, rather than having to "prove" himself over and over again that he's the strongest candidate.

He wouldn't have to deal with the despicable e-mail attempting to slur him by depicting him as a Muslim, which has been perpetuated by the Clinton campaign.

He wouldn't have had to fight being "ghetto-ized" by the Clinton's during the SC primary.

And he wouldn't have to constantly deal with Clinton surrogates attempting to demonize him by referring to him as "Barack Hussein Obama."

Actually Mrs. Ferraro, I believe you are correct--he WOULDN'T be in any of those places.
Can you imagine what kind of damage Ferraro could have done as Veep if she's willing to make statements like this?  I hope she continues her defiance and so does Hillary.  It keeps this on the front page and continues to expose her willingness to say or do whatever it takes to get another vote.  No morals, no shame.
you hillary supporters are just dam fools
Another "so far as I know" hedge from the Clinton campaign. Should any objective person be surprised?
As usual HRC and her hardcore sour feminist cronies, once again minimize anyone African American. She will actively and gleefully use the classic racist ploy of demeaning any advances an Arican American makes by attributing their advances on quoatas and affirmative action programs.  These are the same women who got to where they are by co-opting their opportunities on back of the civil rights struggle now arrognatly think they have the right to pigeon-hole African Americans as a people who are incapable of making the choice to support Barack Obama because they have done the research and make the intelligent decision to support him because he is the BEST candidate for president.   Hillary is now going full ahead trying to race bait the entire electorate.  Beginning in the Ohio/Texas primaries.  She will continue without any apologies because as long as "her Negroes stay on the plantation" and especially ones that come to her immediate aide like Johnson and M. Williams and  be "good and helpful negroes" she will try her best to destroy any notion of being anything other than the racist immoral monster that she is.
the HUTSPA of the clintons campaign spinning everything opposite from the truth, is really an insult to the intelligence of the american people. if anything, its fair to say that obama got to where he is DESPITE him being an african american, thanks to the more evolved and progressive portion of the american people, (the blacks are less then 10% of the dmocratic primery voters), clinton on the other hand got to where she is BECAUSE her being a female, thanks to the voting power of women (about 60% of democratic primary voters) and the big name recognition as the wife of a president.
When is race a "concept"? All people of color know that our race and ethnicity define us and it is not a concept that we can abandon. Obviously, Ferraro is showing her racism and ignorance with these statments. I think Hillary Clinton has had it really easy, if it were not for her husband and the Clinton name should would not have been able to come this far.
Heartbreaking statements from Ferraro, even worse that she lacked the personal insight and moral courage to beg for forgiveness when called on it. Clinton needs to take responsibility and fire her as an adviser immediately. ENOUGH of HRC ruining the democratic party for personal gain, and ENOUGH enabling from supporters, many of whom are also setting back the feminist movement. I am a white woman over 40 and I proudly voted and caucused for Barack Obama here in TX because I am convinced that he is most qualified, period.
Outragous. Clinton is called a Monster and the Obama official is released after Clinton calls Foul. Now reverse this..and Clintons response to such a racist comment is "I disagree" not the famous "reject and denounce" that she required of Obama for support from a fellow racist on his side. Poor taste for Clinton but I guess when you're behind in total delegates, pledge delegates, states won and popular vote you'll take any support you can get. If Hillary had any kind of standards (which she is more than ready to impose on others) then she would dismiss Ferraro to set an example instead of the mud-slinging "Politics as usual" one she currently sports.
Hillary Clinton is just an empty rhetoric-talking pantsuit.  She is all about speeches, no action.

If she can't take the little bit of heat Obama is throwing at her, I guess she'll fall apart when the Republicans tear into her.  She should just quit now.

She has only gotten this far because of whom she is married to.  All she does is whine.  She forgot to reject and denounce Ferraro's racist statement.

When will this nightmare of a campaign end?
I'm going to pass on Ms. Ferarro except to say that she is one of many super delegates of the Clinton era and earlier who support Hllary and could conceivably vote for Hllary, as she is urging them to do, in spite of the Obama lead.  This would, of course, be a travesty of huge proportions.
Hillary Clinton is just an empty rhetoric-talking pantsuit.  She is all about speeches, no action.

Nobody should be voting if they're voting based on race or gender. Period. On the other hand, the Obama campaign has created tension because if he is challenged on his experience or substance they immediately scream racism. If you listen to Ferraro's interview in its entirety, you would know that was the jist of her comment. Sad. I was so interested in this race. I was so proud we had reached a point where a woman and person of color could be viable candidates.  I think I don't care anymore because of all the ugliness on both sides
This message is a reply to "Very Sad"

I just wish everybody involved with these campaigns and specially the Clinton's campaign could read what you wrote. I am white and you gave me the opportunity to understand the whole picture. I just hope the country can see beyond all of these and understand that Obama is the best candidate, independent of race, gender, smell, hight, basketball skills, etc....
To "Very Sad":

From a white, near-Republican, I have to say that what you wrote was very eloquent and well-said.
GF said a bad thing that really does not have a place.  I think the point the HRC campaign was trying to make was that Obama said before that he knows HRC is not a racist, nor is she engaged in a pattern of race-bating.  Now, the Obama camp is back to the pattern argument when it suits them. None of this changes the fact that Hillary is better one the issues.
Agree with CE Tuscaloosa. Obama forgot a pledge in firing Samantha? Must have been a different deal made. We throw the mud; you catch it. Bring back Samantha Power under the same reasoning the Ferraro gave for not apologizing: it's the truth, it's the truth, it's the truth. Seriously, she should be able to return because her comment was at least as tolerable as Ferraro's.
Wow, didn't know Ferraro was still alive!  Who did she run with again?  Some loser, or I would know.  So, nowadays ol' Gerri is the white female version of Farrakhan... fair enough, they are even, on the obnoxious scale.
Why was Hillary in such a hurry to leave Mississippi, when she has weeks to campaign in Pennsylvania?

Because it smells really, really bad down there. Do you people ever take a bath?
only half of america is outraged at this racist campaign that has been played on us since that Ophra came out and caalled Obama The One"He reminds me of the story of "Left Behind"We have already entered the first chapter of the ME takeover.
Let's destroy the democrats and vote for the white Republican, because any party that has caucases and has to "do over" two states is a party that should go away for ever.   Obama is such an empty suit and needs to attack.  The Democratic party allows sexism.
GEEZ...
Hillary approves of any tactic if she feels it is beneficial to her.  She has not answered a single simple question; why her taxes aren't made public, why she hasn't removed Mrs. Ferraro from her campaign, what is her National Security experience aside from a well received speech?  She can't answer because she is mired in dishonesty.
I thought I would vote for Hillary (I am a white woman of a certain age)'just because' she is a woman. After seeing her in action, I will vote for McCain if Hillary is our nominee. Otherwise, Obama has my vote, better to take a chance on someone asking for Change than someone we all KNOW is dishonest.
I don't understand why the American people would want another term of the Clinton's in office. Hillary "stood by her man" after his affairs, blaming the republicans for exposing the whole story. Her objective all along has been trying to look good & honest to win the nomination for president. The Clintons are very wealthy, power hungry people. What's annoying is that she talks about necessary changes needed for health care and prescription drugs. During Bills white house years, one of Hillary's projects was to be working on the health care issue but nothing was accomplished in 8 long years. She is very good at putting the  blame on someone else.
By the same taken Ms Ferraro if Obama got where he is today because of his race then  'the inexperienced experience' Hillary got where she is because of Bill and the fact she was first lady. You need to resign Ms Ferraro and please advise the 'inexperienced experience' Hillary to stop touting her fictitious experience that really boils down to handshakes, smiles, a concert, and yes! the best part of her 'experience' was a speech!!! Can you beat this one? Her real experience was a good speech she gave in China. Betcha she will not ask Ms Ferraro to resign? The Clintons have one set of rules for themselves and another set for everybody else. Disgusting!
Very Sad:  Please do not forget Iowa (I'm from there, and they are as white as white can be), and those other primarily white states he won easily.  I am a white, college educated female, over 50, registered Independent and I would vote for Obama in a heartbeat
There should be no doubt that Ferraro’s comments were out of line and obviously even more so than Powers’ ‘Monster’ comment.  Because Powers was connected with the Obama campaign, her comment was inappropriate and her apology and resignation therefore justified.  At least as much should be the response from the Clinton camp but once again we see Hillary downplaying the negatives that apply to her, even when she accused Barak of not being emphatic enough regarding Louis Farrakhan.  The real point of interest here is the double standard that seems to be continually encouraged and rationalized by the Clinton campaign; as if whatever they do, dirty politics and all, is okay but the media and the Obama campaign are suppose to give her every consideration and also hold to a higher standard of conduct themselves.  When Clinton tries to justify this special and unfair consideration on the basis that she is a woman, it seems to play very thin and simply be an effort to manipulate with more spin.  I wonder if it could ever be possible for her to run an honest, high integrity campaign based on the facts and on mutual respect, rather than always trying for irrational, dishonest and unfair advantage with deceptive efforts.  Maybe that is just not in her character and then simply too risky for her.
I’m curious and would like to address the question to the women voters who are so loyal to and protective of Hillary Clinton and simply ask, WHY? I’m really not trying to be a smart guy and do actually understand the value and agree with wanting feminine representation, and to include truly fair treatment for those women who do run, yet should the loyalty be blind protection and include someone who simply doesn’t deserve? There are qualities women process which are assets for public office, for both in their performance and in benefit for their constituents, but Hillary simply doesn’t demonstrate them. Maybe not a monster but just saying it is because she is belligerently tough and men just can’t accept that isn’t accurate either. Look at her history and you will see considerably more aggressive and combative outbursts than conciliatory or considerate gestures. She literally is far more divisive than she is a negotiator. The sensitivity, intuition and understanding that you might expect all seem to be consistently missing and then everything always seems to be just obstinately about her. Isn’t it reasonable that there is sound basis for the strong feelings, and yes even the dislike, of Senator Clinton? I really suspect that her personality, a strong sociopathic personality like GWB I might add, has far more to do with it than her gender. I would really hate to see her defended for the feminist cause with the result being that we end up with the wrong candidate.
