Ferraro context

Posted: Tuesday, March 11, 2008 5:51 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC's David Gelles
I just spoke to reporter Jim Farber, who wrote the Ferraro story for the "Daily Breeze" of Torrance, Calif. He told me the Ferraro interview took place on Feb. 28th, five days before the Ohio and Texas primaries. The article ran in the paper on March 7th.

But it's important to remember that Ferraro made her comments at the time when many thought the Clinton campaign was about to go under.

The article ran with the headline, "Geraldine Ferraro lets her emotions do the talking."

This is the quote the campaigns are fighting over:

"If Obama was a white man, he would not be in this position," she continued. "And if he was a woman (of any color) he would not be in this position. He happens to be very lucky to be who he is. And the country is caught up in the concept." Ferraro does not buy the notion of Obama as the great reconciler.

Farber says the parentheses "(of any color)" is a direct quote.

And why did the Daily Breeze hold the article for 8 days before publishing it?
Why does the context matter at all? What is the logic: racist comments are okay if you think you're going to lose?
With support like this who needs democrats in any office! Maybe Ferraro has memory loss! Isn't Spitzer a white man? Comments like this makes me never want to vote for a woman! I will be registering republican if Clinton gets nominated! Clinton and Ferraro would make a good team, in hell! I think Ferraro has been doing too many of her sons drugs!
She has to go now. Period. This a much uglier and clear cut case than the S. Powers dust up.
Is Hillary reluctant to pull the plug because it will anger many of those older, white women that she needs to hang on?

The question that needs to be asked then is why did the paper hold onto the story until after the big primary day?  This is unexcusable and not the first time this election season where a newspaper did not print the story as it occurred (see for NY Times on McCain Lobbyist friend for one example).
Very Dissapointed - Please see the other side

Your comment - African Americans are not not voting for Hillary because she is white.  We are voting for Obama because of his stances, policies, and his integrity

I agree in half. I do not think (do not want to believe RE DEMS that) many are voting AGAINST anyone due to their sex or color. Lets say 5% will never vote for a woman and 5% will not vote for an African American.  That is progress from 40 years ago.

But I differ on the current YES voting. HRC gets about 1.5:1 with Women - about 2:1 with Latinos - etc.  So much for BO or HRC is demographics - the Dunkin Donuts vs Starbucks - the Volvo vs the Taurus etc. but but - the best anyone does on demographics- other then the Black vote is 2:1 ... based on policies experience personality whatever NO candidate carries any size shape sex color sexual persuasion right handed or left handed more then 2:1

Yet the ONE single only demographic that is more poweful is Black voting for B.O.

In that context - the rest of the world's behavior for both candidates --- NOTHING can explain the Black vote ratio of 8:1 for BO then Blacks are voting for a Black (who of course is qualified and intelligent and articulate -as are both of them and both are liberal etc. - One Harvard One Yale etc.)

Why does any one deny that race is a factor in who some people vote for. Whites are used to multiple candidates and its hard to say whites vote for whites
-- it is not happening here and seldom does anymore (see New Orleans and its new Mayor etc) Yes there are asshole bigots who do not vote for non whites
but that is the 5% above in the DEM primaries.

Why is it wrong to say Blacks are allowing race NOT just qualifications to influence their vote. Maybe that is good?

If one does not accept that idea - at least to discuss - then what is left - do we say Black people are inferior or superior or that they hear differently then ANY other group supporting ANY candidate --- 8:1 is a racial vote. It may be understandable - it may be payback time - it may be correct - it may be needed affirmative action - it may be UNdemocratic - but it is racially motivated --to deny that as a starting fact for a good discussion is to deny reality
Now the way GF said it sucks - but is it time in a calm mature way to have this on the table and face it - it is the 800LB gorilla in the room that everyone has been ignoring for fear of being called racist. That in and of itself is racist I imagine
The thing that I don't quite understand is that when Louis Farrakhan wanted to endorse Barack Obama the country was in an uproar. Due to Farrakhan's stance on race, especially his contempt for Judaism, it was expected that Barack Obama would reject this endorcement. Now that Ferraro is minimalizing the suucess of Obama, on the grounds of race, it is fine within the party. Why is Hillary Clinton not rejecting this woman's endorcement? By standing by this woman Clinton is in essence condoning everything this woman stands for. Therefore, a vote for Clinton is a vote for RACISM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Can you imagine the outcry if this comment had come from Haley Barbour? The political cover being given Geraldine Ferraro is really quite amazing.
As long as Obama camp does not put an end to the dirty politics played by and/or on behalf of the Clinton camp we will be hearing more and more of these comments.  What is this double standard that we are watching day after day; yet another Clinton supporter makes a racist remark and no one cries foul and asks for the end of Clinton's alliance with her, only days after Obama's adviser was asked to be fired after a very honest remark.
I just checked the election map on the New York Times site, and moused-over each state. In states where Clinton won, it was usually by single digit margins and a few by low double digits, the only exception being Arkansas.

Whereas Obama won most of his states by 38%, 46% and Hawaii by 51%. So to Mrs. Clinton's argument that she's won the big states: yeah, barely. And he's won twice as many "small" states.

It's not just the math anymore, it's the reality. The Clintons can play their desperation game - throw out everything they can and hope something sticks.

Probably not. She's lost the delegate count, the popular vote, the number of wins. To think superdelegates can wave a magic wand and save her seems unlikely.
OBAMA CAMP CAN NEVER HANDLE THE TRUTH
INSTEAD THEY HAVE TOO CRY RACISM...
TO KEEP YOUR ATTENTION OFF THE REAL ISSUES
ABove post about Billary only being in this race AND a Senator because she is a CLINTON is dead on!!!!

This woman would not be ANYwhere near the WHite House had it not been for ol SLick Willy.  Barack Obama doesn't have anyones coattails to ride on, or anyone elses experience to claim as their own.

Ferrero is just a BITTER OLD HAG!  Right up Billary's alley.

And maybe. just maybe, the AA are flocking to Obama because of all of the DISGUSTING,  OFFENSIVE, FILTH that has been flying out of the mouth of Billary and the doushbags in her camp.  They were driven AWAY from her because she is a fool and a liar.

Obama 08
Pathetic comments for a woman who is supposed to possess a higher level of inteligence.  But, having said that, I'm thrilled when the media attributes such comments to a Hillary supporter.  It's a daily reminder of the kind of "schtick" the Clinton's live by.  One more reason why we as Americans want the kind of positive change that Senator Obama is leading us into.
She is telling the truth........and Obama wants to cry racism.   He and his frowning wife are the racist.
That is a very important question is why he did hold onto the story after the Ohio and Texas primaries!  That is very disturbing that this reporter would hold onto this story for over almost two weeks.  What happen to reporting the news as it happens.
Very Disappointed,

I am so sorry for you.  I am saddened that the Clinton campaign has seen fit to make us all feel bad and be reminded of the racism and sexism in America.

fear, despair or hope -- our choices in this election.
Ms. Geraldine Ferraro I guess has forgotten that Sen Obama's mother is white and that he was also raised by his mother so it shows the stupidity of her remarks.  I am glad Sen Obamas mother had the maturity to not be so shallow in her thinking.  So since Sen Obama is a product of interacial relationship the world gets the best of both sides and not just one.

Talking about Ferraro remarks on Obama decried - Barack Obama News- msnbc.com
TUCKER!

You don't get it do you?  Yes people have the right to say anything they like because of free speech.  Yet, be factual is all I ask.  Lincoln, one year in Congress before he ran...... did he win because he was a white man given the qualifications or lack their of.  Hey let's get into this century.  John Edwards, with his qualification on his first run for the Presidency.  Check the records before as you said on your show today "stupid comments" come out of your mouth.  Please remember, although many in the Clinton campaign want you to forget, Hilary had the black vote at the beginning of this campaign.  You, the media were asking was the man, Barack Obama 'black enough'.  Mr. Obama, became stronger and worked hard to earn the black vote, now he has it and Ms. Ferraro's comments are okay, alright to say.  I was a delegate to the New York convention on the Dukakis/Ferraro ticket.  Supported her through out her career.  However, her comments today were inappropriate, inaccurate, and totally out of line.  In the words of Hilary Clinton, the Clinton camp needs to "denounce and reject"  Ms. Ferraro and she should be asked to leave the campaign.

Please Superdelegates, step in NOW and put an end to this long national nightmare.
Obama would not be where he is if he was not black and he sure as hell would not be getting 80% of the black vote if he was not black.  He hasn't ever done anything except serve 2 years in the senate, and speak out against the Iraq war.  McCain and the Republicans will beat him soundly before it is over, thanks to the Obama true believers.  What they are doing is an act of faith, because he sure hasn't done anything to warrant all the excitement.

Have Gerry and HRC forgotten that Obama won Iowa which has over 97% white with maybe 1% to 2% of population being black. This guy was filling auditoriums while Hillary was pushing crowds into hallways to make the turnout look bigger and asking questions from plants.
-
Ferraro playing the RACE CARD is another pathetic example of Clinton Politics ... Old, Tired & Losing.
-
To: Working Man's Man: So why isn't he talking about all the bills he passed instead of using all the flowery rhetoric about change?  If he has done all of that, he ought to let people know about it.
I believe Obama or Clinton would be a good president, but reading through these comments it is absurd to not recognize the hate expressed here by so many. I find myself asking if those expressing these comments are truely Obama supporters or merely Clinton haters. Each candidate offers so many positives and all you can do is deride her.
I wish Michelle Obama were running then I could vote for her.  Anybody but Hillary (or Geraldine).  Get a clue.  We are trying to move beyond race and gender and all other irrelevant division in our search for quality.  Hope is not yet dead no matter how hard the fearful fight in their tragic rear-guard action.  Vote for Hope.  Vote Obama!
I think - all things being equal - Americans are more likely to vote for a women President than a Black male President. Now, in this race all things aren't equal...Clinton has so many negatives that she will be hardpressed to get the nomination. Obama is relatively unknown but he has not created a lot of controversy so he is seen as electable. Now, how easy is it going to be for an elderly white male get enough votes to become President? John McCain is no Ronald Reagan!!!
I really she this is old thinking vs new thinking. She thinks she can inject race & the public is too dumb to notice. Just like Hillary, she's too great to have made a mistake. Well the most powerful woman in the world disagrees with these tactics. Nancy Pelosi: http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2008/03/11/pelosi-joint-ticket-impossible/
A strong case can be made that Obama would have risen just as fast, and possibly faster, had he been white -- contrary to Ferraro's moronic statement. People forget that Obama's 46, not 36. He's got every bit as much raw brain power as Bill Clinton, and, I would argue, more skill as a speaker and "stumper" than Bill had as a candidate. Bill was a year younger than Obama when Bill first ran. White guys with Obama's talents are often recruited for statewide offices as entry-level elected positions, not state legislature positions. Had he been a white Harvard Law Review president with oratorical skills to die for, his trajectory might have been state attorney general (Bill's first elected office), then governor, then presidential candidate. Obama had to start his electoral career in a state senate district with a high African American population, because no money people would bet on a black statewide candidate. People often forget the stunning fact that, since Reconstruction, only 3 blacks have been elected to governorships and only 3 blacks have been elected to the US Senate. So please stop stoking race resentment, Ms. Ferraro. You have become a monster.

Here is her radio interview where she lashes out at Obama, it is MUCH WORSE than how it reads:

PLEASE LETS KEEP THINGS(PEOPLE) IN ITS ACTUAL PLACE!
OBAMA ISN'T CRYING FOUL! REALLY THIS IS A CAMPAIGN AND SOME PLAY ON THE HIGH ROAD(LET'S MAKE CHANGE) AND OTHERS TAKE THE LOW ROAD(ONCE A BAD COMMENT IS MADE, OH I HAD NO IDEA THAT WAS GOING TO BE SAID. BEFORE YOU ALLOW SOMEONE TO SPEAK ON BEHALF OF YOUR CAMPAIGN PLEASE DO BACK GROUND CHECK ON THEIR VIEWS.
The irony is that Geraldine Ferraro was a token candidate when she was the VP pick. She had accomplished little and her only qualification was her gender. She proved to be a very weak candidate with a scandal in the closet.
Barack is a gifted politician, speaker, and leader. Anyone who has seen him in person realizes that he has rare gifts. Ive seen Bill Clinton and Barack and Bill does not have the eloquence, charisma, and integrity of Barack. So if Obama is black, white, Latino, or any ethnic background he stands out because of the tremendous gifts he has. And unlike many in America today he's never cashed in on his talents- he's devoted himself to service as a community organizer, state legislator, and now US Senator. When you graduate from Harvard law as Editor of the Law Review and turn down the big bucks as a corporate lawyer, that says a lot about your character. Character is what we need in the White House. These are the reasons Barack is where he is, ahead of Hillary.
the HUTSPA of the clintons campaign spinning everything opposite from the truth, is really an insult to the intelligence of the american people. if anything, its fair to say that obama got to where he is DESPITE him being an african american, thanks to the more evolved and progressive portion of the american people, (the blacks are less then 10% of the dmocratic primery voters), clinton on the other hand got to where she is BECAUSE her being a female, thanks to the voting power of women (about 60% of democratic primary voters) and the big name recognition as the wife of a president.
I just heard the original tape of the Gibson show where she spoke. She was later interviewed for a news article. This is one of those situations where you can't take just one sentence; you needed to hear the whole discussion. She was speaking about his experience and substance and that no other candidate would be considered viable with his resume. She is also being interviewed now. She is pointing out what many have felt. You can't question anything about Obama or his campaign yells racism. She pointed out that he is "lucky" in that the times have changed. She did not say "he's lucky to be a black man."  She also pointed out that Axelrod called her racist today but that he hasn't minded asking her to come and speak in support of other minority candidates he has managed. I hope you all get a chance to hear the interview in its entirety. However, I don't know that some are open to listening to the truth/
I don't agree with Ferarro its not because he's black its because of the insurance that Hillary has compared to Obama and the issue on Iraq war that Hillary voted for the war and Obama didn't and also that Hillary didn't leave her husband .
Hillary Clinton is just an empty rhetoric-talking pantsuit.  She is all about speeches, no action.

If she can't take the little bit of heat Obama is throwing at her, I guess she'll fall apart when the Republicans tear into her.  She should just quit now.

She has only gotten this far because of whom she is married to.  All she does is whine.  She forgot to reject and denounce Ferraro's racist statement.

When will this nightmare of a campaign end?

I am glad the Whites in the Democrat party are finally telling the blacks they better know their place.
Racism as defined by Websters...
1. a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human races determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one's own race is superior and has the right to rule others.
2. a policy, system of government, etc., based upon or fostering such a doctrine; discrimination.
3. hatred or intolerance of another race or other races.

Racism defined by websters.

How are Ferraro's comments racist?

You silly liberals project your own racist ideas into whatever context you please.

Obama's Hope and Change mantra depends on comparisons to Martin Luthor King, Jr.  If he was White, the comments would seem trite and facile.  Since he is black, they are considered deep and profound.  Just telling it like it is...
This is similar to the Power remark (monster)...probably said in an emotional moment as the campaign hit a set back (Power's remark was after mini-Super Tuesday).

Of course I still believe that the two remarks are very different (Ferraro more entrenched racism, Power a mere catty remark).

It's quite ironic for Ms. Ferraro to make the statement she made considering that most agree if it weren't for her gender she never would have been nominated for VP in 1980. She had less experience than Obama does now and was only in her third 2-year term in the House. She's a has-been who never really was.
I think I'm like alot of Democrats who like both candidates alot.  The thing that I am worried about is how each candidate will stand up under the onslaught of Republican attacks that is already beginning to surface.  I have concerns about both candidates but i believe that Hillary is more likely to be able to withstand the onslaught having experienced it first hand while in the White House.  I'm not sure how Obama will deal with it.  I think the Republicans are licking their chops looking at both of the Democrats.  But McCain is very vulnerable as well.  I just think Hillary is a better all around candidate and can do a better job.

Geraldine Ferraro's latest statement is:

HILLARY WOULD NOT BE IN THE POSITION SHE IS IN ---- If Bill, Hillary, Spitzer, et al., HAD SOME BRAINS.

The Top 10 REASONS Obama is in the WINNING position is:

10) Hillary LOST Iowa and came in 3rd place (29%) BEHIND Obama (38%) and Edwards (30%)of the vote

9)  Obama did reasonably well in his 2nd place finish in New Hampshire among Whites, Independents, and Republicans

8)  Obama was raising MILLIONS of dollars - record sums of money - from online donors to compete

7)  Hillary's old 1990s politics of top-down campaigning and not realizing that grassroots campaigning is changing communication methods and the drawing of the younger voters and energizing the party

6)  Hillary's lack of planning past Super Tuesday March 5th primaries

5)  Hillary LOSING 11 caucuses/primaries in a row and all but conceding to Obama who won them decisively thus picking up huge sums of delegates

4)  Obama's voter appeal to different voters in the tradition of Dukkais, Hart and Tsongas - battles that have been going on for almost two decades within the Democratic Party and now bubbling over

3)  Bush 41, Clinton 42, Bush 43, Clinton 44 - maybe dynastic politics isn't so good?

2)  Bill Clinton - good or bad - the man draws attention and the two-for-one deal is not a plus

1) Democratic Votes (according to ABC News and including MI and FL) in any event - Barack LEADS in popular vote excluding Mississippi -
Clinton 13,600,228
Obama   13,603,153

The fact of the matter is that with the Clinton name recognition in a battle with a nobody, who gave a speech at the Democratic National Convention in 2004, who would have thunk it?!
Geraldine Ferraro spoke the plain Facts of the matter:  Obama has won most of his delegates because of the black vote.  Just saying the word "black" is not racist.  Speaking the truth is not racist.

MSNBC/NBC is the CULPRIT in CREATING this "racist" scenario.  Clinton spole the word "fairytale", and the "msm" called it "Racist".  Hillary Clinton stated the fact that President Johnson got the civil rights legislation passed - & the "MSM' called that "racist".

Tim Russert .... rustled ... in his hand ... at one of the debates THE SOURCE of those UTTERLY RIDICULOUS accusations of "racism" .... An Internal OBAMA campaign MEMO --- PUSHING THOSE ACCUSATIONS TO THE PRESS & asked Obama a question about that MEMO - WHEREIN The OBAMA CAMPAIGN Played the RACE Card.

Obama mumbled a few platitudes ... campaign staff gets carried away.... blah, blah, blah. and THERE the Matter dropped.  The MSM Mever mentioned it again .... JUST LIED .... & blamed the CLINTONS for the ENTRY of "racism" into the debate.

AS a RESULT of Obama playing that race card --- Obama won the S.C. Primary .... & a whole lot of delegates since --- thanks to:  MSNBC/NBC, et al --- the highly paid media whores owned by GE ... all the better to futher the CHENEY ENERGY Bill RIPOFF & defraud the American Taxpayers of BILLIONS OF $$$.

This election is not about Democrat/Republican/liberal/conservative/Black/White --- its about MONEY.
Ms.Ferraro's comments are certainly perplexing - perhaps  some disease?
I am not particularly enamored with either Mr. Obama or Ms. Clinton, however according to www.thomas.gov, Ms. Clinton sponsored (or cosponsored) 155 bills whereas Mr. Obama sponsored or cosponsored 115 bills (in contrast to  information given earlier).  The details can be examined at the thomas.gov site or at the Library of Congress (see www.loc.gov).
since when being black has been a benefit? these elections start off in states that are over 90% white. lets not forget that obama could not win the presidency with stricly the black vote.
My comment is this. If Hillery Clinton somehow becomes the democratic party nominee for president of the United States, i will stay home on election night. I cannot vote for that racist person.

Vote for someone with credibility.

Vote for someone with a humane moral compass.

Vote for Obama!
