Ferraro vigorously defends remarks

Posted: Tuesday, March 11, 2008 6:25 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC's Domenico Montanaro
Geraldine Ferraro defended her remarks and went even further in another interview with the Daily Breeze, where Ferraro's original comments appeared. This time SHE claimed to be the victim of racism and said, "Sexism is a bigger problem." ...

"But far from backing off from her initial remark, Ferraro defended it and elaborated on it.

" 'Any time anybody does anything that in any way pulls this campaign down and says let's address reality and the problems we're facing in this world, you're accused of being racist, so you have to shut up,' Ferraro said. 'Racism works in two different directions. I really think they're attacking me because I'm white. How's that?'...

"Ferraro said she was simply stating an obvious truth, as seen in exit polls that show Obama taking as much as 80 percent of the black vote in the Democratic primaries.

" 'In all honesty, do you think that if he were a white male, there would be a reason for the black community to get excited for a historic first?' Ferraro said. 'Am I pointing out something that doesn't exist?' ...

"She also said she is familiar with [Obama adviser David] Axelrod from his work for minority candidates in New York.

" 'He knows damn well that the best thing to do in a situation like this is to come back and hit with race,' Ferraro said, adding that the response is a sign that the Obama campaign is 'worried' about the first-term senator's lack of experience.
Ferraro said she was not trying to diminish Obama's candidacy, and acknowledged up front that she would not have been the vice presidential nominee in 1984 if she had been a man.

"But she also echoed remarks of feminist leaders like Gloria Steinem, who argued in the New York Times that Obama would not have succeeded if he were a woman because gender is 'the most restricting force in American life.'

" 'Sexism is a bigger problem,' Ferraro argued. 'It's OK to be sexist in some people's minds. It's not OK to be racist.'"

Tell like like it is girl.

He is BLACK and blacks are voting for him because he is BLACK.

Does the truth hurt?

Clinton 08
Listen carefully: They're attacking you because you're a senile bigot, not because you're white.
Well, Hillary is not the "right man (oops--women) for the job Geraldine Ferraro!  If it where not, for her position as the first lady (once upon a time in a land far far away) Hillary would not be considered for the position of President--no mater her sex.  Yes, your right--prejudice is a sword sharpened on both side that cuts in two directions.  However, your missing the Point of the Sword--Predjudice is wrong.

WAKE-UP, You racist--Hillary, do like Obama says, "Denounce and Reject."  "I don't agree with her comments" is not strong enough a response to be President.
Shame, shame on you Geraldine Ferraro.  Your original words and subsequent explanation prove you are from the past where sexism and racism were both used for political expediency.  Aren't you about the same age as McCain & Reagan? Your time has passed.  Please be quiet. Most of us are looking towards the future.
Excuse me - last I knew, prior to Bill's poorly timed race remarks and comparison of Obama to Jesse Jackson, Hillary was getting the lionshare of the black vote.

I suppose a woman voting for a woman for the sake that it is a woman is ok??

p.s.  I'm a woman and I'm voting for Obama.  I'm also white, middle class and tired of the politics as usual I've seen in my adult life.  We deserve better!!
Since the beginning of this Presidential campaign Obama has made sexist remarks about Hillary.  The type of clothing she wears, she likable enough, to her crying in New Hampshire.  Most comments are underhanded , but they are there. As far as the race card , Obama has used it himself for sympathy in South Carolina.  How the Clinton's were picking on him, poor African-American man.  He distorted Clinton's words so the African=American population would feel sorry for him.  He is a very professional calculating politician, he knows very well what he is doing to get the votes.  He plays the Chicago type of politics.
Incredible.  This lady is clueless.
OMG, she's going to get lynched.
This is really pathetic!
Let's play who is the bigger victim!
Maybe I like to live in a fuzzy-wuzzy fantasy world, but my peers and I choose who to vote for candidates based on content of character - not gender or color of skin.  I'm aware that the gender/race issue does play a role, but I don't think it is as big as a role as the MSM is making it out to be.
Go Ferraro!! She's 100% RIGHT!! You can't say anything against Obama or any of his supporters without being labeled racist. They're the biggest whiners I've ever seen! McCain with DESTROY him in the debates even worse than he did Mitt Romney!!
Well said Ferraro, now lets see how long it takes the obama loving media to prolong and mischaracterize your comments.
Ferraro, get off the stage.  Even if you're right, I bet you'd scream bloody murder if someone DARED to point out the other reality in this campaign:

That is that women are voting for Hillary because she's a woman and a Clinton.  Isn't that a fact too, Mrs. Ferraro?  Why won't you talk about that "reality"?
"'Racism works in two different directions. I really think they're attacking me because I'm white. How's that?'"

Oh.  My.  God.  It's not ok to be sexist OR racist.

If a black man said it, it'd be just as bad.  Ms. Ferraro, do you remember a man by the name of Bob Johnson?  He was black.  He had to apologize, too.

How absolutely and utterly disgusting.  And then they have the gaul to say Obama wouldn't be where he is if he was a woman?!  When they are supporters of Hillary Clinton, who is in a CLOSE second place?!

Did they ever stop to think, you know, maybe, people don't hate Hillary Clinton because she's a woman.  People hate Hillary Clinton because she's evil.  And she's not just evil because she's a calculative woman.  She's evil like Dick-Cheney-Evil... down in the dirty-corrupt-mud-evil.  There's nothing sexist about that.  Maybe people hate her because she'll stop at absolutely nothing, she'll stop at absolutely no ethical or moral boundary, to secure the nomination.

I'm utterly disgusted right now.  I mean, I've overlooked a lot of stunts the Clinton campaign has tried to pull, but this is blatantly and horribly across the line.
She entirely right. If a woman was running after being in the senate less than 3 yrs she would not of made it this far. That is the point she was making. Sexism is very strong today and woman need to realize this.
Women like you Geraldine, Give Women a Bad Rep! Plain & Simple.

Hillary Now knows if she can't Win ( Steal)the nomination, her Senate seat in New York will be harder for to defend in 4 year's. New Yorker's have seen her for what she is, A Racist Bitch, yes i said it(if it get's posted). Her calculated political career will sonn be over.Thank God, No More Clinton's in American Politic's!
How can a White Woman tell us which is the greater of 2 evils Sexism or Racism? She should just shut up...
OK reality check.  As an African American female who has listed to what Senator Obama has said and I am STILL waiting for subtance, and Lord knows I AM NOT a foaming at the mouth Hillary fan.  There is a song with lyrics that say, "talking loud and saying nothing".  Should Senator Obama become the nominee he will have to come up with a better play book.
Ms. Ferraro...

When you find yourself in a deep hole, its usually best to stop digging.

White, green, black, blue, male, female, hermaphrodite... it doesn't matter. It's the message. Please don't drag others down into the mud with you & Hill.
"" 'He knows damn well that the best thing to do in a situation like this is to come back and hit with race,' Ferraro said"

He didn't come back and hit with race, you came forward and hit with race, Geraldine.  Sheesh.  You and Hillary are the women who make women like me say, "I'd love to see a woman president - just not her."
Adults should know that words are powerful.  Especially the words of those who are in the public eye.  Being a victim of 'sexism' I guess gives her the right to make others the victims of racism.
Give em Hell Geri!!
Geraldine, sorry Ma'am, it's not just black people who are questioning you.  White people WHO VOTED FOR OBAMA BECAUSE HE"S A BETTER CANDIDATE than Senator Clinton are questioning you as well.

If somebody pointed out anything out "Senator Clinton's support among women coming because she's a woman," we'd have a bloodbath on our hands.  And YOU would be leading the firing squad.
So I guess her opinion doesn't matter because she's a woman.  If she was a black elf with horns, she wouldn't be where she is today.  Pathetic trash!
You know what, I completely agree with Ms. Ferraro.  If Barack Obama was a white man named John Smith, he would not be in the position he is in today.  No, instead of fighting through April in a negative primary, the "white" Barack Obama would've locked up the nomination back on February 5th.

Ms. Ferraro said a dumb comment, made worse by Senator Clinton's weak dismissal, as well as Sen. Obama's reference.  Ms. Ferraro should have no say in what happens in American politics if she feels that the only reason Obama has staying power is because he is black.  I am ashamed as a Democrat that she was our Vice-Presidential candidate so long ago, and I hope that with a vote for Obama we do in fact get a new age of politics, one free of this horrid negativity.

Angry white women over the age of 50 are not helping Hillary.  But forward-looking, content white women over the age of 50 are definitely responding to Barack Obama and his call for change, unity and a new politic in Washington, DC.
Wow, this is getting fun. The Obama Campaign must be thrilled. What a loose cannon.
Perhaps Penn. needs a reminder of who the working Man is-- Here--talk is cheap--let me prove it!

Who's the best?  Obama's the best.  Take a look you sad Clintonites and you'll see that Obama did more in 8 months then most senators do in a lifetime of service.  That's the kind of president I want working for me.

The following information gathered from the Library of Congress on the Legislative experience Junior Senator Hillary Clinton and Junior Senator Barack Obama. Please Feel free to check these records for yourself and draw your own conclusion.

Senator Clinton, who has served only one full term, which is 6 years and another year campaigning, has authored and passed 20 twenty pieces of legislation in her term of six years into law. These bills can be found at (wwwhomas.loc.gov).  Senator Clinton has passed.

(18) Assist landmine victims in other countries.
(19) Assist family caregivers in accessing affordable respite care.
(20) Designate part of the National Forest System in Puerto Rico as protected in the wilderness preservation system.

She has a nice list, but note that these are The Fact's straight from the Senate Record; Therefore, it is not made up.

Now, It is time to post Senator Obama's record from the Library of Congress.I have to mention that Senator Obama's list is too substantive, one is coalesced to categorize. Since its alot, remember you can go to the Library of Congress website, and check it out yourself, but I am just summarizing his first 8 months.

During Senator Obama's first 8 eight months of elected service he sponsored over 820 bills.

He introduced 233 bills regarding healthcare reform,
125 bills on poverty and public assistance,
112 bills on crime fighting,
97 economic bills,
60 human rights and anti-discrimination bills,
21 ethics reform bills,
15 gun control,
6 veterans affairs and many others.
In his first year in the U.S. Senate, he authored 152 bills and co-sponsored another 427. These included:
(1)the Coburn-Obama Government Transparency Act of 2006 that became LAW,
(2)The Lugar-Obama Nuclear Non-proliferation and Conventional Weapons Threat Reduction Act that became LAW, (3)The Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act that passed the Senate,
(4)The 2007 Government Ethics Bill that became LAW,
(5)The Protection Against Excessive Executive Compensation Bill that is in committee just to name a few.

In all since he entered the U.S. Senate, Senator Obama has written 890 bills and co-sponsored another 1096. An impressive record, for someone who supposedly has no legislative record.  Read the facts and not emotion.

What has Hillary done in comparison?  Absolutely--noth. . .
So if he wasn't black and she wasn't married to Bill...

Ferraro is so 20th century.
WHAT SOMEONE IS FINALLY CALLING OUT OBAMA'S BOO HOOING,RACIST SCREAMING CAMPAIGN???
I LOVE IT ...YOU GO GIRL

CAHNGE YOU SAY ...I SAY CHANGE YOUR DIAPER
Ferraro = Hillary Clinton,
The comments say all there needs to be said on their approach to party unity and racial equality.
The Obama campaign gave the Clinton campaign 24 hours to respond on their own and assume responsibility for their surrogate.
In this they failed miserably and chose to play wait n see and respond only if the Obama campaign made an issue of this rather than standing on what the Clinton campaign calls principal.
The Clinton campaign needs to donate to charity all of the campaign contributions raised by this obviously racist person who represents the white, low wage, never ever a black politician policies of the young governor Wallace, Bull Connor wing of the democratic party that seems to have migrated from Alabama, Mississippi & Georgia to Ohio, Pennsylvania, New Jersey & Michigan.  While never leaving Florida.
You go girl - White Male. There has been and continues to be a large degree of sexism in the race. Although Obama argues he wants a color and gender blind race, it is anything but.
This lady needs to shut it and go home.

Sure, one can argue that it was and is hard for women to get equal treatment, but we have come a really long way in that respect. However, trying to equate it to the suffering that African Americans had to go through is strikingly arrogant. I don't remember many women getting enslaved or killed just because they were different.
She just needs to step away from the spot light.. She is no good for the campign...
I'm done.  The democratic party is a joke.  I am an Obama supporter and I beleive if McCain wins the election in November, the democratic party will have gotten what it deserves.
Words are powerful and everyone knows it.  If they weren't, why did Hillary become so upset over being called a 'monster' or being accused of 'pimping her daughter'.  She should know better.  Words can make you feel good or feel bad, feel happy or feel sad.  It is pretty wreckless of Hillary to not put this to an end.  Have some class.  Again, poor judgement.
Geraldine...stop digging dah-ling! You're going down deeper....
It should be clear to every thinking person that this is encouraging racism.
Geraldine is right on in her remarks.  Do you think 80-90% of the blacks would vote for a white person? Never have before that I know of.  They are voting strictly on race, obviously.  Great rationale for picking a candidate.  Today's college kids are abysmally ignorant of the facts and they get online and chatter back and forth about nothing and get psyched up over a younger person they know nothing about and they vote for him because it's cool.  God only knows why the old liberals are voting for him.  Lemmings, I would say.  He is the most overrated candidate, maybe second to George Bush, I have ever seen, and he will lost to McCain because of it.
Ok, so clearly the Clinton campaign has made a decision (if you think that Mrs. Ferraro's response wasn't discussed with Wolfson & Penn today, you're a fool).

What a sad state of affairs.  The Clinton campaign has realized that it won't be able to win African American votes.  And so it has decided to do whatever it can to appeal to the "subliminally racist" vote in Pennsylvania.   Bang the drums about racism and about the Obama campaign playing the racist card and hope it solidifies your "white undereducated" vote in Pennsylvania.

As a white voter, I am disgusted
I really think they're attacking me because I'm white. How's that?'...  WHAT IS WRONG WITH THIS WOMAN!? Does she think that only black people are voting for Obama?  I am a 49 year old white woman and I find her comments amazingly offensive.  Hillary had better shut this woman up. Oh, wait. Let her talk, she can help Hillary dig her own political grave.
This woman must be completely out of her mind! Didn't Bill Clinton get the majority of the African American votes when he ran for president. The African American community has always supported Democrats and have pulled their weight in order to get Democrats elected across the country.  Now we have a QUALIFIED black candidate that can lead nation in new direction are we are look as turning our backs on whites.  This woman is a FOOL!
She's still telling the truth.  Way ta go Ferraro.

You're just telling it like it is.

Obama can't have it both ways.......he wants the black super delegates to come over and support him,  but doesn't want people to say why they are.
The man is a talented orator, charismatic, and posseses the innate ability to inspire. These are not racial attributes. Reagan, Kennedy, and a host of other "white" men possessed them also. To say that Obama's appeal is based primarily on race IS a racist remark. The nation and the world are ready and in need of a dynamic, inspiring leader regardless of race or gender.
No woman is voting for Hillary because she is a woman. The NOW organization in New York isn't calling everyone a sexist if they don't back the first viable woman for presidency.

So it is reverse racism to vote for Barack Obama if you are black and see the first viable black candidate EVER???

Gerri, YOU injected race into the discussion when you made your first statement. He does not win IOWA, IDAHO (a black man's dream state), COLORADO, NEBRASKA, and WYOMING because you are a black man, especially a black man named Barack Obama.

Ok, so Ferraro was a token candidate on the 1984 ticket that got slaughtered by Reagan and she has qualifications to say these stupid things because?  She has no what's the word Gravitas.  At least Obama is charismatic, intelligent and, one heck of a campaigner. She didn't help Mondale in 1984 and she isn't helping Hillary in 2008.
More Ferraro defense on FOX news (yikes):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HOIwQSq9y8o

She's now spouting that Obama needs her to fundraise for him, so he'd better stop attacking her...

(My two cents: sexism & racism, who cares which is worse? They're both wrong. Period. Saying that Obama wouldn't be where he is if he wasn't a black man is just like saying Hillary wouldn't be where she was if she wasn't a white woman. They both hold truth for a small voting bloc, but cares what that voting bloc thinks? They've nullified themselves by being prejudiced like Ferraro. I'd like to think that the vast majority of informed voters are standing by their candidate because of the issues and the personality of their candidates. If Ferraro is correct, it's a sad thing, but people where I live seem to be judging on issues.)
"This time SHE claimed to be the victim of racism and said, "Sexism is a bigger problem." ..."

I agree with Gerry on the sexism. That is why I chose to support Obama over Hillary. I know he has a better chance of overcoming bias in this country than she does. I want the candidate who will win in November.  I am suprised she would raise an issue that argues against voting for Hillary.  Remember Ferraro LOST the election for the Democrats as a female vice-presidential candidate; not a good thing to raise in people's minds. I didn't want to make an issue of it but since the Clinton campaign has decided to do so here goes. My impression is that probably 25% of melanin challenged voters would be uncomfortable with a melanin endowed candidate, but somewhat less than 50% women and somewhat more than 50% of men would be uncomfortable with the thought of a woman candidate. Ergo, that is why I supported John Edwards and must now go with Obama as the next choice.
P.S. -- Hillary's divisiveness hasn't been a help.
Gloria Steinem has issues. Ferraro made childish comments & should have apologized for injecting either -ism into the race.

Let's talk fact. 60% of voters are women. 30% are AA. While AA are a factor in some pockets, women are a consistent advantage for Clinton.

And secondly, at the beginning of February polls showed Clinton leading Obama with black voters. He won them over.

Clinton is starting a fire she can't put out here.
another mistake by the clinton campaign, putting this women into the spotlight, while people are voting in mississippi. if hillary was smart, which everyone says she is, i don't know if i do. anyway she should get rid of ferraro, spitzer, wuf, wuf, wolfson, and terry mccauliffe, throw anne lewis in there for good measure. there all old school hacks, except for spitzer, he has the bill problem, anyway four years of hillary, nothing is going to change, there all old school, running an old style campaign-with it's primary goal of smearing your opponent, and that's because hillary has no record to run on. also if there's a god, there will be a scandal running down fast eddy rendell highway soon. he's another old school political hack, who's been feeding, and i mean feeding at the public trough way to long. the restaurant is closing mr. rendell, last call. go take your final pee, and leave the premises.
So I guess her opinion doesn't matter because she's a woman.  If she was a black elf with horns, she wouldn't be where she is today.  Pathetic trash!
