Ferraro vigorously defends remarks

Posted: Tuesday, March 11, 2008 6:25 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC's Domenico Montanaro
Geraldine Ferraro defended her remarks and went even further in another interview with the Daily Breeze, where Ferraro's original comments appeared. This time SHE claimed to be the victim of racism and said, "Sexism is a bigger problem." ...

"But far from backing off from her initial remark, Ferraro defended it and elaborated on it.

" 'Any time anybody does anything that in any way pulls this campaign down and says let's address reality and the problems we're facing in this world, you're accused of being racist, so you have to shut up,' Ferraro said. 'Racism works in two different directions. I really think they're attacking me because I'm white. How's that?'...

"Ferraro said she was simply stating an obvious truth, as seen in exit polls that show Obama taking as much as 80 percent of the black vote in the Democratic primaries.

" 'In all honesty, do you think that if he were a white male, there would be a reason for the black community to get excited for a historic first?' Ferraro said. 'Am I pointing out something that doesn't exist?' ...

"She also said she is familiar with [Obama adviser David] Axelrod from his work for minority candidates in New York.

" 'He knows damn well that the best thing to do in a situation like this is to come back and hit with race,' Ferraro said, adding that the response is a sign that the Obama campaign is 'worried' about the first-term senator's lack of experience.
Ferraro said she was not trying to diminish Obama's candidacy, and acknowledged up front that she would not have been the vice presidential nominee in 1984 if she had been a man.

"But she also echoed remarks of feminist leaders like Gloria Steinem, who argued in the New York Times that Obama would not have succeeded if he were a woman because gender is 'the most restricting force in American life.'

" 'Sexism is a bigger problem,' Ferraro argued. 'It's OK to be sexist in some people's minds. It's not OK to be racist.'"

She sounds very much like the Clintons, the politics of Washington insiders. She said it with very negative implications, but she is now shifting her position as her friend Hillary does all the time by doing the "sorry talk". I think she should be kicked out of that campaign if Hillary wants to be fair as she claims.
I agree with Ferraro stating that sexism gets ignored compared to racism for a public outcry. She has the right to state any opinion she wishes even though it causes a "stir".
'Ferraro said she was not trying to diminish Obama's candidacy.'

That's exactly what she is trying to do.

Anything the Clinton champaign says or does is perfectly okay.  Just like President Clinton was the that got NAFA in an now Hillary says she against it.  Sounds like double talk to me.  If she gets the nomination I will vote for John McCain.  Enough of the Clinton's and the Bush's.
Thanks Phyllis for keeping us all informed as to the absurdity of this former political figure.  Walter Mondale may have ended his political career by putting this woman on the ticket with him.  I'm sure he has many regrets.
It isn't the '60's Geraldine -- try to evolve!
Ferraro is not only shameless but also illiterate. "If Obama WAS a white man" is a real howler. She doesn't even know one of the most elementary grammatical rules.
So she is fighting back by being a racist?
Wait a second .. isn't this the same argument that white supremacists use just with an added gender flavor?
You know G. Obama is half white--yes he is--and you know G.  there are a lot of non-racist black folks voting for the "White" Obama-

What's that I hear in your thoat--I must be crow.

Ferraro's remarks would not be such a big deal if the Clinton campaign hadn't howled about the Powers remark and demanded her resignation, or insisting Obama "denounce and reject" Farakhan's support (which he didn't ask for).

For Clinton to shrug off Ferraro's remarks and now Spitzer's behavior while demanding Obama's supporters fall on their sword gives her a big H for hypocrisy.
She is talking out both sides, as does the campaign that she supports. How can she say that Barack would not be in this position if he were white or a woman, when HRC is is the same position and is both white and a woman! This double talk is typical Clinton-camp double-speak, and if HRC does not denounce and reject her support, it shows that she is willing to take any measure for her personal Quest for Greed and Power!
HRC is willing to throw anyone under the bus for her personal gains, and if you think that you are safe from this fate, then she's got you fooled too! Just wait... you'll see.
The only reason that we know the name of Geraldine Ferraro is because she is a white woman. We must consider that Jesse Jackson had received the third most popular votes for the democratic nomination 21% but, received only 8% of the votes at the convention. Walter Mondale added her as his running mate in an attempt to appear progressive hoping by adding a woman to the ticket that African-American and white women would stand behind the party following its clearly un-democratic and racist actions at the convention.  It only worked for white women.  Until Senator Obama’s win Iowa many African-American’s including myself felt that was no in the Democratic Party for us.  Yes, Reverend Jackson ran as a Democrat in 1988 but, there was little evidence that the outcome would be any different and our support was in hopes of sending a message to the party, I am not sure that they got it.  It is clear that African-American’s were not fooled by Mondale’s pandering to the female vote by nominating Ferraro and that Ferraro would not have been selected if she were a man.  It appears that many of the Clinton’s and their supporters are no more prepared to unite the party today than was Mondale in 1984.

Darin Independent voter in Maryland.
You go girl!!!!

Finally somebody stated the obvious.  This is not about uniting anybody.  Obama and his fllowers have created teh biggest divide of races since - let's see, Rodney King.  Funny thing is - I am nmot black or white.  And his homophobe friends in his "Christian" church are not uniting anybody either.  This man is doing nothing but stirring up division and hatred.  Then he will sit back and laugh because he made history, while you and I have to live with the fall-out.  The Clintons united across race, gender, sexual orientation and religion. And let's not forget generation. Now we once again have the fragmented society of the 60's.  People hating each other just because of their beliefs.  People feeling like they have to join a campaign out of some sort of duty.  The Oboanation will certainly lose to the Republicans because he has not only divided the party - he has divided the people.
Lets not forget all the women WHO ARE OPENLY ADMITTING THEY VOTED FOR HILLARY BECAUSE SHE IS A WOMAN!!!!!

Last time I checked, there are more women then african americans in America...

It is beyond my recognition that a women can claim sexism in the same sentence she makes a racist remark.
My open you mouth when you are only going to put your foot in it. Ferraro is an ignoramus.
Isn't funny how these HRC supporters are claiming that whenever you say something bad about Obama you are labeled a racist, but these are the same folks who attack Obama supporters for being sexist.
Please I beg of the Clinton Campaign to just let Ms.Ferraro keep on talking!!!!!!

Here's a woman that was chosen by Mondale to be VP because Mondal & Co. thoght that with a woman on the ticket they JUST MIGHT be able to compete with Reagan.

She let her self be used in a sexist manner before by her own party, and now she wants to try this garbage?  lol.

Down with Clinton the Clintonion sleeze ticket!
When you think about it, the comment is not so far off what Hillary has been saying all along, "He's not fit to be Commander and Chief, He's just speeches. . ."  No wonder Hillary didn't have a real problem with a racist comment.

However, I personally would want a working man like me to be president.  Obama is a working man's man. Let me prove it---check out the record below.

Who's the best?  Obama's the best.  Take a look you sad Clintonites and you'll see that Obama did more in 8 months then most senators do in a lifetime of service.  That's the kind of president I want working for me.

The following information gathered from the Library of Congress on the Legislative experience Junior Senator Hillary Clinton and Junior Senator Barack Obama. Please Feel free to check these records for yourself and draw your own conclusion.

Senator Clinton, who has served only one full term, which is 6 years and another year campaigning, has authored and passed 20 twenty pieces of legislation in her term of six years into law. These bills can be found at (wwwthomas.loc.gov).  Senator Clinton has passed.

(1) Establish the Kate Mullany National Historic Site.
(2) Support the goals and ideals of Better Hearing and Speech Month.
(3) Recognize the Ellis Island Medal of Honor.
(4) Name courthouse after Thurgood Marshall.
(5) Name courthouse after James L. Watson.
(6) Name post office after Jonn A. O'Shea.
(7) Designate Aug. 7, 2003, as National Purple Heart Recognition Day.
(8) Support the goals and ideals of National Purple Heart Recognition Day.
(9) Honor the life and legacy of Alexander Hamilton on the bicentennial of his death.

Only five of Clinton's bills are, more substantive.
(16) Extend period of unemployment assistance to victims of 9/11.
(17) Pay for city projects in response to 9/11
(18) Assist landmine victims in other countries.
(19) Assist family caregivers in accessing affordable respite care.
(20) Designate part of the National Forest System in Puerto Rico as protected in the wilderness preservation system.

She has a nice list, but note that these are The Fact's straight from the Senate Record; Therefore, it is not made up.

Now, It is time to post Senator Obama's record from the Library of Congress.I have to mention that Senator Obama's list is too substantive, one is coalesced to categorize. Since its alot, remember you can go to the Library of Congress website, and check it out yourself, but I am just summarizing his first 8 months.

During Senator Obama's first 8 eight months of elected service he sponsored over 820 bills.

He introduced 233 bills regarding healthcare reform,
125 bills on poverty and public assistance,
112 bills on crime fighting,
97 economic bills,
60 human rights and anti-discrimination bills,
21 ethics reform bills,
15 gun control,
6 veterans affairs and many others.
In his first year in the U.S. Senate, he authored 152 bills and co-sponsored another 427. These included:
(1)the Coburn-Obama Government Transparency Act of 2006 that became LAW,
(2)The Lugar-Obama Nuclear Non-proliferation and Conventional Weapons Threat Reduction Act that became LAW, (3)The Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act that passed the Senate,
(4)The 2007 Government Ethics Bill that became LAW,
(5)The Protection Against Excessive Executive Compensation Bill that is in committee just to name a few.

In all since he entered the U.S. Senate, Senator Obama has written 890 bills and co-sponsored another 1096. An impressive record, for someone who supposedly has no legislative record.  Read the facts and not emotion.
YOU CAN"T HANDLE THE TRUTH!!!
Blah, Blah, Blah - Feraro is history. We don't want to hear this old rubbish. Obama is sweeping the nation, not because of any of the rubbish she is going on about, but because of his intelligence, his vision, and his clear cut focus on getting us out of the mess the establishment (Bush, Feraro and Clinton) has got us into.
I am niether white or black and I was raised by a single mother in a large family of ten. It should not matter about color or if you are a woman. This makes me absolutely sick to my stomach to hear this woman speak like this not only once, but twice to try and defend herself. Has integrity and class gone out of style in this world. This is just plain sad that some of us in this country have reduced ourselves to this kind of shameful behavior.
You ask is Hillary Clinton a two-faced, bipolar candidate who can't stay on message?

As far as I know she is not.
wow, how sad? a historic campaign reduced to a needless and worthless comparison over who has the bigger cross to bear, gender and race. further more, unlike Obama denouncing Farrakan and admitting hate for what it is, Clinton is incredibly disappointing in not denouncing this hate-mongering bigot for who she truly is. Clinton is in jeopardy of driving the black vote away in droves and further dividing an already divided country. Great campaign and supporters, Senator Clinton!
Evil love company. Every time you look around you have these two evil peoples sitting in the Churches. I think the Religion leaders have sold out the Black Churches by have the most two eviliest people on the Earth. They made Ahab and Jezebel feel like babies in a candy store.
Who really cares what either one of these thinks. Neither one is capable of being president period and those repubs have nothing to offer either. We are faced with something I wish never would have happened and that is candidates that have no business running for the top leadership position of our country. Who wants a screeching liar as president who has a smidgen more experience than Obama. Obama has no substance and only talks of massive entitlement programs that we have no way of paying for. He has zero experience of how to handle the challenges that face out nation. Than you have a old man close to dying ready to carry on the same old usual of the right. I am fed up and disgusted with the whole process. Hillary is a clear panderer who says what the polls calls for just like Bill. Obama is quite frankly full of BS. McCain is a blustering idiot. I doesn't matter what the gender or color of skin. I am looking for substance, ideas, and a history of real change, and positions on Economy, War, Immigration, Healthcare, and our Debt. Someone please tell me other than what a great speaker Obama is, what has he done as a Senator? What legislation has he stood out in front on? He stood in the background as to not give any amunition for his adversaries to use against him in the campaign. All that really shows me is he is weak, not a true leader and doesn't know what he is doing in the senate. Hillary has provided nothing of significance in her time on the hill as well. She has changed her position on so many issues who knows what she stands for. McCain has done nothing, but be a hero of the vietnam war...ok thank you John now go home. I wish we could just start this whole process over and get some more candidates that deserve my vote. I am not voting for the first time in my 66 years. I am frightened what is going to take place the next 4-8 years we already have been ravaged for the last 20 years. It is just getting worse I don't even know what this country is anymore. I served my country in Vietnam too and love my country. Its time for real change in getting rid of the career politicians and ones who speak a good game, but come up short when pressed for real answers.
Why don't you guys ask Al Gore what he thinks of Mrs. Clinton? There's a WHITE MAN that knows just how evil Mrs. Clinton can be.
As a 56 year old black woman, I feel  that when Obama says change, he is passionate about just that.

Why does Geraldine Ferraro and others like her feel that black people are so illerate and shallow as to choose someone for the office of the President of the United States just because he is black.  We are capable of weighing what each candidate is bringing to the table and making an intelligent decision based on our freedom to choose and be counted, regardless the candidate we choose.

People are tired of being fed the same old diet of empty promises, we are ready to bring this country back to the United States that our founders intended it to be.  I hope she will examine her motives and open her eyes to the desperate need for change in our country today.

Here's an oldie but goodie... Yeah, Ferraro's legit...

Oh come on!  White MALES are bashed ALL the time--by EVERYONE!  And no one thinks twice about the racist remarks, the gender hate laced remarks and/or the age related remarks that are made.  Liberals want free speech, so what is everyone complaining about?  As usual, Democrats only want free speech for those who are saying exactly what THEY agree with.  Problem is, Democrats are now split on many issues, so they want to shut each other up. Please DO shut each other up!
Are u guys all stupid . ..she said that if she wasnt a female that she wouldn't of been asked to be vice president . .. which leads to Obama.. . If he wasnt black and he was white  .. he would be on fire like he is. He is by far getting the black vote and that is why. . .It doesnt mean that is racist statement. Just like some women are voting for Hilary because she is a women. Is a black women that votes for Obama  . .a sexist because she votes against a women. . . .. ..people are reading too much into it and people shouldnt have to walk on egg shells because Obama is black and anything you say might or could sound racist. He could use that card everytime . .it seems to be working because Geraldine who is on the same side as Obama and Hilary is getting called racist, bigot and everyname in the book. I dont care for either Obama or Hilary  but now I like Geraldine even more because she says the truth and is being run over the coals by people in her own party. Wowwwwwwwwwww . . .Go geraldine
she's is not the first one to say that ,Obama is untouchable, history of opression against black people and people feel guilt all over the place and confuse enthusiasm with reality. What Hillary has been promissing is backed up by her body of work.
THE CLINTONS GOT THE OVERWHELMING MAJORITY OF BLACK VOTERS AND SUPPORT- LIKE OBAMA (and inspite of Clinton's sexscapades and racial "games" with welfare reform, Sista Soulja remark, and Loni Gaunier)! THAT'S PARTLY WHY BILL CLINTON WAS CALLED THE FIRST BLACK PRESIDENT! AND SINCE ALL PRESIDENTS HAVE BEEN WHITE, THE MAJORITY OF BLACK VOTERS ALWAYS VOTE FOR WHITES! WHY SHOULD BLACKS VOTE FOR A WHITE WOMAN? ARE WHITE WOMEN LESS RACIST THAN WHITE MEN?
Ferraro is 100% right about Obama playing the race card.  He is like an attractive vase - pretty but empty.
Is this the way Hillary will run the White House? Name calling and "black" listing qualified people to advance the same o'l cronyism that has held our nation back from true change? She stands firm: for defending the use of racism, claiming to "win" Florida unfairly, using the fearmongering ads... Win at all cost?  I am accutely aware that if she wins, expect the GOP to rise up to pound her- just like they did Bill. The Democrats will be in danger of the back lash...say goodby to the House and Senate. Shes a fighter alright, but just like if all you have is a hammer everything looks like a nail..She is fighting to win- failing to uphold the common decency that the citizens of our nation hold each other to. She will not get my vote.
My gosh how much lower will this campayne go? i had thought i would have voted for hillary but now forget it because under pressure her true character has surfased.
          ron n.j.
She is right in that racism & prejudice goes both ways.I have seen white qualified workers bypassed for less qualified minorities simply because of color & quotas. When are we going to get off the color bandwagon & judge all people by their abilities & qualifications rather than skin color?
What she is saying is just the facts!!!
I am a white woman HiIlary's age who caucused for Senator Obama in Iowa, a state full of rural white foks.  Why?  Because he has the best chance of bringing about the change this country needs.
What I find so pathetic about this affair, is the fact that neither candidate has the slightest idea of the real political current running in this country. More interesting, is the fact of our reality as working people. When gas reaches $5 a gallon, McCain, Obama, or Clinton, have no real solution, except to surround themselves with the same multinational corporate lackeys, who have essentally destroyed our way of life. Hell bozo's, i'm 60 years old, and i hear my peers actually talking inserrection, revolution, and fear that in the end, if this keeps going on, the depression of the 20th century will be a picnic, comparred to what is coming. Do any of you so called erudite people actually think, this silver spoon fed generation is going to take it laying down and waiting for some smooth talking politician to fix it...... I am laughing hard, more important placing bets on our survival as a species...... laughing hard in Deming N.M.
Who cares WHAT Geraldine Ferraro says?  She's not a "Has-been".  She's a "Never-was".  Even she admits that she would never have been the vice-presidential candidate if she were a man.  Her qualifications were [and are] ZERO.  Her opinion doesn't matter, not because she's a woman,  because she's a zero.
Ferraro is an idiot!. I read that 90 percent of blacks voted for her and Mondale and 95 percent of blacks voted for Bill Clinton. However,  if they vote for a talented and far superior black candidate they are racist! If Obama loses I am voting for the Republican .
I refuse to support any candidate that does not reconize their true race. Obama refuses to acknowledge the fact that he is bi-racial.He is playing for the black vote by calling himself black.
She is absolutely correct.  But the Obama supporters live in another reality and deny the truth, just like they deny anything negative about their candidate and instead blame any shortcoming on Hillary.
It is frightening when the electorate is so blind and shallow
I am absolutely ready for a woman as President! I know from two close friends who have worked in the White House, that Hillary is not a good person. She belittles those she feels are "below" her. According to them, she's self-absorbed and nasty. The "working class" she says she'll represent is made up of people for whom she has no respect. I don't trust her.
Poor Democrats, what a mess they have made of this
campaign!
SHE IS CORRECT. Maybe he should not be considered as a VP candidate after all.

Vote Hilliary 08. Experience matters.
Geraldine, i voted for you. I and other black people, have voted for democratic white candidates 95% and sometimes higher percentages, for 40 years. Did we vote for them because we thought they were black? Your statement insults us. Senator Clinton had the support of most of the people in my family and most of the blacks i know. Until her and Bills negative and racial attacks. Are you sure Bill want her to be president. He knows better. He knows what buttons to push.
One of my problems with Obama is that HE IS 1/2 WHITE, so why is he running as a black man only.  He also says he is going to change everything, he can't without congress and the senate.  It is too bad race has to be even brought into it, but that is what the campaign  has come to.
I TOTALLY agree with Geraldine Ferraro!!!!!  It's about time someone has the guts to say it.  I would bet alot of money to know for a fact that most votors for Obama are voting for him because of his COLOR only.  I also, bet that a huge number of his supporter JUST registered to vote this year, again just because of COLOR.  You would think people were above that and more intelligent in voting for a president for more than matching skin and how about background and credentials..... That is not even on most of his voters minds.  Scary stuff!!!!!!  We are in a war people and you need to vote for someone with a background of experience.  It's NOT a on-the-job training position.  I am a women and am not voting for the WOMAN running but, I would if I were a Democrate because it's not rocket science....SHE has a better grasp on the world of politics and the job that is the most important of all..OUR PRESIDENT.
I also agree with Ms. Ferraro on if Obama was a white man or a women he would have NEVER gotten this far.  It sad that women are more repressed than is admitted now a days.  We need to claim more respect and payback for past history.  OR......we can all move on and past that and work TOGETHER for our world and future.  We are all equal but, still not treated as so.  BUT!!!!  Let's be intelligent and not vote for one because of sex or color but, for who is best and most educated for the highest position in our country.
I almost feel like this is reverse racism and sexism.
When is the world going to "change".  It doesn't start with one who has NO experience or bussiness even running for the job.  I think he has gone too far with his lack of experience and training.
I refuse to support any candidate that does not reconize their true race. Obama refuses to acknowledge the fact that he is bi-racial.He is playing for the black vote by calling himself black.
