Obama talks Spitzer, race, FL-MI

Posted: Thursday, March 13, 2008 11:11 AM by Mark Murray

From NBC's Mark Hudspeth and Mark Murray
In a media avail aboard his campaign plane, Obama answered questions on a host of issues, including Spitzer's resignation, race, re-votes in Florida and Michigan, and the upcoming campaign in Pennsylvania.

On Spitzer: "Obviously, it’s a tragedy. It’s heartbreaking for the family, but I suspect that it would not have been possible to function as governor, that what he said is right, that he needs to spend time healing himself and his family." Asked in a follow-up question whether Spitzer should be prosecuted, he replied: "You know, I won't offer an opinion on that."

On race becoming an issue in the Clinton-Obama contest: "As I said yesterday, I do think it's unfortunate. It's not entirely unexpected. You know, as I've said before, race and gender issues are very powerful in our society. They've been an organizing principle of our politics since the earliest days of our country. And so it would be naïve for me to think that we could just brush them aside. And I know that sometimes Sen. Clinton and others accuse me of being naïve, but I'm not naïve enough to think that we're going to solve the country's racial problems, and some of these other divisions in the span of six months or a year. What I do think is that our campaign has pointed towards the future, an era where these distinctions are less prominent in our politics."

On the best way to solve Florida and Michigan: "I think [campaign manager] David Plouffe's been pretty clear about this. What we want is an opportunity for the Florida and the Michigan delegates to participate in the convention, to be seated. But ... what we don't think makes sense is, for example, the Michigan delegation to be seated when my name wasn't on the ballot. I mean, I saw an interview where Sen. Clinton suggested that we had competed in this race. I don't know exactly how she drew that conclusion, since I didn't step foot in Michigan and my name was on the ballot. So ya know, the notion that somehow it would be fair for her to obtain significantly more delegates than me in a contest where we both agreed it wouldn't count -- I wasn't on the ballot, and I didn't campaign there -- just defies logic. I think you could ask my 6 year old whether that was fair, and she would probably be able to say not that isn't."

Obama continued, "Our campaign has been in conversations with the Michigan delegation, the Florida delegation, and the DNC -- and talked about what options are out there. And I think they're gonna be explored over the next several weeks. We're not gonna make the final decision on it, and I'll abide by whatever rules the DNC lays out."

And on Pennsylvania: "The public poll most recently showed us down 20, and that was true in Texas and Ohio as well. It’s been true in other states. So that’s why we campaign. So we will go there, we will campaign vigorously, we will spend money, we will have staff on the ground, I will spend a lot of days in Pennsylvania. I think there’s no doubt that Sen. Clinton is heavily favored there, but we’re going to compete actively, and we’re going to compete actively and we want to try to win the state like we tried to win every other state. You know, we have not selectively said which states are important. We think they’re all important, and Pennsylvania is important. Now we do think the other nine states afterwards are also important, so we’re going to be spending time there as well, but there’s no notion whatsoever that we are ceding Pennsylvania. We’re going to try to compete there as hard as we can."

Asked in a follow-up question whether Spitzer should be prosecuted, he replied: "You know, I won't offer an opinion on that."

In other words, he doesn't answer stupid questions from stupid reporters....

Considering it was The Clinton's that brought race into the race, one has to wonder what they were thinking.  Now their legacy will not only have Monica and Whitewater and cattle futures and all that in their lives, but the possibility that they are underground racists has to be in the mind of a lot of voters.
As Barack said, even his 6 year old can tell that HIllary's rants about Michigan and Florida are nonsense.  Too bad voters over 60 in Michigan and Florida can't.
I have to say, he's a candidate that stays on message, he's remarkably consistent, and he makes it a little easier to try and stay positive.  He is a good role-model.

I think its interesting that (and he's said this before) that he'll abide by what the DNC decides re. Mich. and FL.  Do you think the Clinton camp will say the same?

I think we can see which candidate is more likely to follow rules in the future and which candidate will look for opportunities to do end runs around them...I'm just saying if current performance at all predicts future actions.

(trying to be nice)

Obama 08
I'm more and more pleased with this guy.  The short form on today's four major political issues.  He keeps getting it right without anger or retoric or without denegrating anyone.  Good for him.
That folk's is Why we want Mr. Barack Obama as our next President!
Why didn't msnbc and the media ask Obama about his Pastor spewing hate filled, racist remarks in his church's service???  I think it's very troubling that msnbc will not show the video of Obama's (Pastor Wright) spewing racial slurs and hatred toward whites and the Clintons,at his church services.

The news media have a obligation to report all the news.  Obama needs to be questioned on his Pastor's statements.

Obama was present when his Pastor made these hate filled and racial remarks.

When is the media going to question Obama on these things?

The people of the Unided States have a right to know
what kind of person we are voting for.  Obama says his Pastor and friend Rev. Wright is his mentor.

This is very frightening and is an outrage that msnbc will not report on this.
Yeah...Check this out...

This is Obama's mentor and pastor at the church he attends...not a very christian attitude.  This is where he bases his campaign of hope?

spoken like a true leader.
The remarks by Senator Obama are a breadth of fresh air in a political world that is filled with the stale words of self importance and entitlement, which is the case all too often coming from the Clintons campaign.  Campaigning everywhere, what a concept.... the Clintons should try it.  Go Obama!
As always, eloquently spoken by Senator Obama.
May calm common sense prevail, thank you Barack.
Obama '08
I don't know how much more of this I can take. We've got MONTHS more back-and-forth between Obama and Clinton. I fear by the end the Democratic Party will be nothing but cinders.
Leaders do the right thing not because it's popular but because it's right!
I think Obama should ignore Hillary for a week out of the 6 before PA. He should touch McCain up a bit, and move to a domestic agenda. I think that Obama's ability to bring big matters down to earth will suit him fine.

He should reach back to the speech he gave in '04. Point out that education, employment and environment don't effect certain Americans but all of us. I liked Bill Clinton but I think this isn't the 90's and something different is needed for the country.
I don't hate or dislike Hillary. I think she's cool, but I just think Obama is the better candidate this time around.
"I think you could ask my 6 year old whether that was fair, and she would probably be able to say no that isn't"

Newsflash! Obama claims supporters of assigning Michigan delegates based on the unsanctioned election are less logical than a 6 year old. :)
---quoted ---
the notion that somehow it would be fair for her to obtain significantly more delegates than me in a contest where we both agreed it wouldn't count -- just defies logic.

Seems pretty logical to me.  Let's elect a candidate that can't play by the rules, switches positions in the middle of the game and doesn't tell the truth about her record or her competitors record.

Thank goodness Barack Obama is a candidate.  Otherwise, there would be a mass exodus from the democratic party.  Is she really the only alternative the democratic party to scrounge up?

Women for Obama!
Even if you're not voting for Obama, what's not to like about him?? Seriously...
Instead of democrats bickering among themselves about race and gender, they should try pointing out that they're the future and John McCain is the prototype candidate of the past.  Instead of losing everything over this, celebrate how far democrats have come and turn this into an historic opportunity.

Change we can really believe in --

Obama/Webb 08
My father (a WWII vet) would never have wanted to see a black person hurt simply because this person may have wanted to play major league baseball, wanted to eat in a restaurant or wanted to get a good education.

However, I always assumed he was a racist because of the little things he would say. I don't think he ever realized how devastating his words were all those years ago. But they were.

It's hurtful to millions of Americans. We need to be aware of this fact. We have to change our mindset once and for all.

Despite what people may think, Barack Obama has handled this quite well. I for one never imagined he would have to put up with the things he has been putting up with since he started campaigning. He doesn't deserve any of it. Is it because he has the lead that this has all surfaced? It appears so.

I wish him the best going forward. He is a unique individual and I for one am very glad he's in this race.
Bravo Senator Obama.

If American's don't choose Barack Obama as President, they will have missed the most important opportunity, an opportunity that will not come again for the foreseeable future.

Please no more Bush/Clinton/Bush/Clinton divisive old style politics... its destructive.  Americans and the world want REAL change, and it can begin with the type of change Barack Obama is offering.

Obama for President 08.
A great deal more class here than in the other camp in with political calculations rein:

measured reaction regarding Ferraro's comments

showing sudden compassion for Mi and Fl voters that wasn't present in the fall

discounting any state that was lost (you're with us or against us mentality)

Callously calculated remark about Obama's religion - "Christian as far as I know"

Disregard for African-Americans and even democrats in a me first, win at all cost approach that was prevalent in the 90s (resulting in Republican Revolution)
Hes just being nice and consistant? Give me a break! This guy has got some big skeletens in his closet and nobody had bothered to open the door yet. Just wait for the swiftboaters..they will certainly find the old crack using, gay male prostitute days of young Obama. And I'm sure will also find much more interesting situations concerning Obama and his wife. Can't wait.
People should note that Obama did not sound negative in the interview.  Compared to Clinton who will use any opportunity to insert an attack line.

Clinton lied on NPR today when she denied saying that McCain pass Commander-in-Chief threshold and Obama did not.  That was caught on tape.
How many Floridians voted in two states by mail-in ballots ????

Some have expressed concern that many or some Floridians will leave Florida for the summer and not be available for a ‘Re-Do’ primary.  My question is how many of those who are leaving for the summer (presumably snow-birds going to their homes in northern states) actually voted in two states – Florida and their other home state?
One might ask, which candidate, Senator Obama or Senator Clinton, sounds more presidential lately.

In her so-called "apology" - which all of the media outlets are kindly framing and explaining for her to help make it sound more sincere - Senator Clinton once again tried to define Senator Obama as the "Black Candidate."  Paraprhasing, she stated that we should be proud of Jessie Jackson and Barack Obama for what they have accomplished.  Her tone was both condescending and craftful in the effort to continually confine Senator Obama's campaign to the parameters of the campaigns run 20 years ago by Jessie Jackson, which were, indeed, significant in their own right.

We need to remember that her audience is 50+ white Americans who both remember Jessie's campaigns and may have even voted for him.  I was one of those voter and yes I was proud to do it.

But she wants to remind those of us in that group - and others - that Senator Obama's campaign is only symbolic.  Something to be proud of because it represents "progress" but not something to believe can really deliver results.

I continue to be amazed that people such as the Clintons, Geraldine, Rendell, Wolfson, and others think that we don't see this all for what it is: fearmongering and a coded way to tell people of color to stay where they belong - on the back of the bus.  Oh, and by the way, Senator Clinton, you should have apologized to all Americans.  We have all been insulted by your statements and the statements of former President Clinton and your supporters such as Ms. Ferraro.  You have offended all of us not only those who happen to be Black Americans.

Senator Clinton, please come to terms with the fact that Senator Obama is driving the bus now and he's got about 13,000,000+ people right up front with him - and we represent the full spectrum that is America.  Why don't you come join us up front, the view is great and it is going to just get better.

Obama's opinion is naturally skewed by his knowledge that he would not win Florida and is iffy in Michigan.  Why would he speak in support of an action that binds the party at the expense of his delegate and super delegate count?
The god awful bleeding heart liberals have done it to themselves again. This Obama guy has yet to be completely investigated, past and present. Several of my dem friends can tell me very little about him, only gush and repeat yes we can and change nonsense. What morons the dems are. John McCain will be our next president the way the dems are imploding. HA!!!
"we want to try to win the state like we tried to win every other state. You know, we have not selectively said which states are important. We think they’re all important"

That is one of the reasons he is winning, and should be the next president.

Hillary has proven she really only cares about people if she has something to get out of it for her.  She didn't even step foot in Louisiana, yet she wants to use Katrina in her latest speech to try and gain points.  If she really cared about those people, then she would have been there talking to them. Travelling to see the devastation and lack of progress.  But she knew she wouldn't win, so they weren't worth her time.

She didn't care about Michigan or Florida for the many many months between when they had their delegates stripped and Feb 5th.  Only after she needed them did she care about having those voices heard.
I am not sure what kind of President Obama will wind up being. It seems obvious to me that intellectually Barak has all the tools. He thinks before he speaks and he does it without being emotional. He can process information correctly and quite rapidly. His obvious maturity is not be denied. Hopefully he will surround himself with intelligence over allegiance.Bush did just the opposite with absolutely horrible results. The worst thing Obama could do starting out as President is surround himself with a flock of yes men or women. He obviously functions best when he is under pressure. Leadership qualities! He is leaps and bounds ahead of J.McCain at this time.
Racism is very much alive in our daily lives. To pretend that these issues should not be discussed shows calculated decisions to not disuise these matters for political expediency. Many white people are voting for Obama due to their white guilt or young people because they think it would be cool to have him as President. Black people are not the only ones that encounter discrimination and hate on a daily basis. Are the Obama people stupid enough to believe that the Chicano and Mexican community will just run over to be on his team?Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, California are our voting blocks and we love Senator Clinton. The Obamas cry racism when they do not like public remarks made about him.  Him and his people including his spouse have dissed Mrs. Clinton so frequently they make it look acceptable. Their spokewoman who said Obama iws not ready to answer the red phone recently said that anything that deminished Obama candidacy is out of bounds. What about Obama's remarks that the republicans have a truckload waiting to unload on Senator Clinton? He and his wife have their own truckload of garbage that is presently being unloaded. Mrs Oama has sated that if Hillary can't take care of her own househould how will she run the white house. She needs to explain to the American people how Obama will run the white house without the friendship of thugs like the Chicago man that has been friends with her candidate for a long long time. We respect Mrs. Clinton and honor her work in our communities. It is pure uglness to see how the hypocrisy of the Obama people are allowed free latitude to disrespect our friend and candidatwe Senator Hillary Rodhman Clinton. Thats her full name and she is not running away from it. Talk aout making rules up as they go along. Why did they not throw these rule out whenhe announced his candidacy in the land of Lincoln. Oh, and do not notice my skin color while your at it.
We're finally getting the something different we've been asking for.  I know everyone is down on his "experience" but we've had experience - that hasn't worked out too well. This time lets go for brains, compassion and compromise. The last great speaker out of IL worked pretty well for the country. Ended slavery and the like =)
Jerry, first it's nice to hear they finally got you that toilet after sitting on it for 2 years....

Second, you obsess too much about the Clintons...

Third, Hillary never injected race into this campaign, it was Obama, who cried race the first time he was attacked on his substance-less campaign.
John Doe and Mark Carey -- I think you'll find that there has been a great deal of coverage regarding the church to which Sen. Obama belongs.  It's there if you want to look for it.  (And for the record, I'm glad no one holds me responsible for all the things my pastor says and does!)

Dr. Strangedog -- What a great idea!  A week-long ignoring of the Clinton campaign, perhaps announced ahead of time (in more acceptable language)?  Why don't you send that suggestion to the campaign?

Another thought ..... what about a debate close to the PA primary?  By then the demonization should be well-entrenched and there's nothing like shaking up perceptions with reality: he really is a pretty civil, smart and likeable fellow.  (And isn't it odd that Hillary who wanted weekly debates in OH hasn't mentioned the word since then?)
**FOR ANY OBAMA SUPPORTER THAT CARES**

In an effort to chill out for a sec and not get all bitter I ask any "Obama-maniac" is there anything you like/admire about Hillary?
I'm in MI, so I couldn't vote for Obama, but would have. But I think that Hillary has something Obama doesn't and that is a no nonsense demeanor I haven't seen since Margaret Thatcher. I don't mean this to be derogatory. Nobody would ever question Thatcher's toughness or resolve. I haven't heard anyone cast doubts on Hillary in this either. I think that she is good at fighting the GOP in the sense she doesn't let them get a jab for free like Kerry did. I would be supprting Clinton right now if it weren't for Obama. It's not because or in spite of his race. He's just good at what he does, and for me that's good enough.

Anyone else have something GOOD to say about the other side?

ALL ABOUT THE PEACE IN '08
<i>Yeah...Check this out...

This is Obama's mentor and pastor at the church he attends...not a very christian attitude.  This is where he bases his campaign of hope?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iPjVp3PLnVs </i> - Mark Cary, NC

Mark, what's un-Christian about this? Certainly this is a angry diatribe, but Jesus angrily kicked out the merchants from the temple. He is speaking out against the oppression of African-Americans and points out Hillary has never been pulled over in her car because of the color of her skin. What exactly is false about his words?

Your indignation to this sermon is not better than Ferraro blaming Obama for playing the race card after she dismissed his achievements as nothing but affirmative action.

Apparently you are falling for the kitchen sink strategy and turn a blind eye to the issues.
The context of the situation, Clinton's use the race card to take the light of how shallow and unqualified HRC really is! Detracting from the real issues is their goal. Obama stays the course and the people will understand , the Clinton's are all washed up!!
The Ferraro issue was Clinton's 3AM call on race relations.  She failed to pick up the phone.

On MI:  The Clinton can, with a straight face, say that the MI results should count because the primary is fair should disqualify her on the spot.  Trust is essential.  It is something we have not had with our president for 7 years.  IF Clinton can go back on a pledge for personal gain this easily, then lie about it, how could the American people trust anything she says?

On Re-votes:  Regardlesss of the outcome, the loser will claim the process was unfair.  A re-vote will not solve anything.  Split them 50/50 on the first vote and be done with it.
I used to doubt Mr. Obama at first but for me he is becoming more appealing as more and more issues come up. This is a trait that is important in a President to become better with time. Another thing, lets not forget that our future as a nation is at stake and there is clearly one person who is consumed by the desire to make things better for all of us versus the others who seek election as an entitlement. the ones who seek election as an entitlement will turn out to be a burden to our nation. I was for Hillary before Obama stepped in. I voted for her in Texas but now i regret that.

Change we can believe in! this is what i want us to be as people. There is no doubt right now in my mind that Mr. Obama is the best thing that can happen to America. think about all the possibilities it presents us, imagine America.

Go Obama, Yes We Can!
So, Mark and 'John Doe', if you are a Catholic (or any other religion for that matter) and your priest is found to be a child molester, does that make you a child molester by association?

At least have the basic moral fortitude to judge the man on his own merits, not trying to distort him with statements by peripheral figures. If that's the best that you have, that's pretty pathetic indeed.

A bit of logic for you, on the off chance that you are interested in anything aside from your hate filled rants: It is an indisputable fact that Senator Obama's mother was a white woman from Kansas and he was raised by her and his maternal grandparents (also white.) His sister is half Indonesian and half white, and lives in Hawaii. It is an indisputable fact that Obama loves those people very much and is anything but a racist. Therefore, your attempt to taint him with this useless rhetoric is baseless, illogical and desperate.
As I've said before, Obama signifies a positive change for our nation. Take out race, take out gender; insert logic, judgement, consistency and one would have to see this man represents the future. People are making it harder than it has to be; look at it logically....do you want the same old politics or something new? I opt for new.
Let's face it ... the media is gonna tip toe around any contraversy around Obama, because Obama and campaign is gonna label them as racist. He's gonna waltz into the WhiteHouse because he himself has played the race card to his advantage.
Everyone running for the democratic nomination knew, before the FL and MI primaries were run, that they wouldn't count.  Is it right to change the rules after you see the skewed results just because the race is so tight and someone needs all the help they can get.

Why would the opinions of Barack Obama's minister affect someone's support of Obama.  I hate to be judged that way.  Let's stick with the constitutional separation of church and state.
As always with Barack, the clarity, honesty, and strength of character comes through when he speaks to real issues.  He offers a refreshing change from the hypocrisy and self serving views of the Clintons and those who run their campaign.
//Women for Obama! //

Hear, hear!!
I have decided to switch my support from Hillary to Obama after recent events, and after reading his remarks. I will, of course, support Hillary 100% if she gains the nomination, but she was slow to the renouncement punch after Ferraro's dreadful remarks, and that seems to be her pattern. I was more impressed with Obama's handling of the "monster" situation.

Obama is smart to say that all states matter. He is also smart to withhold judgement on Spitzer.

Finally, I do think Clinton should somehow be awarded an extra delegate in light of Spitzer's resignation. Fair is fair.
TO JOHN DOE AND MARK CARY : Why do you guys think that Obama's mouth is in his pastor's head ? Why do they have to question Obama about what Pastor Wright said.
I do remember when Hillary was asked a question compared to Bill's position, her response was." He's not running for office " or " He's not on the stage "
You Clintonians want things both way as long as they are in your advantage.
One other thing : Why is Bill Clinton hiding from giving his opinion on the Spitzer scandal ? I thought the Clintons like pointing to the 90's as years of succes. Oups, I forget !!! Monica was part of the 90's.
[Obama] [a]sked in a follow-up question whether Spitzer should be prosecuted, he replied: "You know, I won't offer an opinion on that."

Yeah Barack, you wouldn't want to have to form an opinion on something. It would be a first for your campaign, and someone might be critical of it.

Obama is getting a pass from the media, and Hillary (who also won't take a stand on anything) in the primaries. If he gets to the general election, that will change real fast.

The man is a spineless twit.
Not only was Obama's name on the ballot in Florida,  he ran T.V. ads in Florida. He is such a liar. Obama chose to take his name off the ballot in Michigan. Again he skirts the truth. "my name wasn't even on the ballot". How about saying; I chose to take my name off of the ballot. Is the the new kind of politics we get to look forward to. Lies and deceit.
The guy couldn't be more clear: he says he'll abide by whatever the DNC decides.  He should challenge Clinton to make the same statement.  (Although even if she did, no one would believe it...)
To John Doe and all of the other folks who talk about Pastor Wright:

I watched the video.  Wright is not spewing racial slurs at anyone.  He makes some valid points if you would just calm down enough to listen.  His message was about one of the many differences between Barack and Hillary.  He mentions that Hillary has never had a cab in NY or any where else speed past her bacause of the color of her skin.  Hillary has never been called the N word.  Hillary's never been poor and without hope.  Hillary has pretty much lived a nice, privileged life.  His message was that Obama has been there.  He's probably had white women cluth their purses when he gets on the elevator.  He's probably had a hard time getting a cab because of the color of his skin.  He's been called the n word before, and I would not put it past you, John Doe, to be calling him that as I write this.  You're the ones spewing hateful, racial slurs.  Pastor Wright is speaking about facts.  The facts of the world we live in today.  While there are some people who'd like to believe that these things don't happen - you go spend the day as black man in this world.  Then come talk to me about how great it is.

That's not hate.  It's fact.
Voters - I would encourage you to read this.  Be informed, make your own judgement.
http://abcnews.go.com/Blotter/story?id=4443788&page=1
For those who want to blame Obama for the words of his minister then let's blame Hillary for her husband's philandering, lying under oath, getting his law license revoked and the pardons of thieves, crooks, and money lenders to both him and her. That's fair, right? Get a brain or stop blogging.
