Clinton camp: Key(stone) to WH is PA

Posted: Thursday, March 13, 2008 2:17 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC’s Domenico Montanaro
Pennsylvania counts -- a lot, the Clinton campaign stressed on a conference call with reporters.

“If Barack Obama can’t win there, how can he win the general election?” Chief Strategist Mark Penn asked, re-iterating the thesis of a memo the Clinton camp sent out yesterday. That memo was ridiculed by the Obama campaign in a response e-mail to the media, which line-by-line commented on and edited the Clinton memo.

“If someone on my staff wrote that I’d fire them,” said Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter, a Clinton supporter who was also on the call.

All this comes on the heels of an Obama conference call yesterday when Obama Campaign Manager David Plouffe stressed, “This is not just about Pennsylvania. They [the Clinton campaign] are the prohibitive favorite in Pennsylvania. We will not be defined by Pennsylvania. We will try to get the most votes and delegates, but we won’t cherry-pick states.”

Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell, a Clinton surrogate also on the call, took humbrage. “Diminishing Pennsylvania is offensive,” he said.

Plouffe added in yesterday's call a famliar refrain for the Obama campaign: “This is a race for delegates.” He also stressed Obama will focus on, in addition to Pennsylvania, the other nine contests, including Indiana and North Carolina, which combined have more delegates at stake (187) than Pennsylvania (158).

At the crux of the Clinton camp's argument is that Pennsylvania is a critical swing state. But this is not a general election; it’s a primary and as NBC’s Mark Murray wrote yesterday there is no direct correlation historically between primary victories and general-election ones.

In addition, a poll the Clinton campaign cited on the call to show that their candidate holds an 18-point lead in Pennsylvania, also shows Obama faring slightly better than Clinton against McCain among Keystone Staters in a general-election match up.

“Look there are different polls explaining different things,” Clinton Communications Director Howard Wolfson explained when asked about it. He cited the recent NBC/Wall Street Journal poll, which “shows them in same place” against McCain.

He continued, “The bottom line is, and the Obama campaign would admit to this, the general election is going to be extremely competitive, and John Mccain is going to be a very formidable nominee… I don’t think there is any sense, from the Obama campaign, that it would be somehow a cakewalk. All the polls show both candidates are running equal against Sen. McCain. That’s somewhat less important than nominating the best person.”

That's not quite the same thing as saying, “If Barack Obama can’t win there [in Pennsylvania], how can he win the general election?”

Why isn't Mark Penn fired yet? He is more a hinderence than a help.

Either Mark Penn is dumb. Or he thinks I'm dumb.

This is like saying, "the 7th inning is the MOST important inning, whoever score the most runs in the 7th inning should win the game regardless of the final score."
Mark Penn and Howard Wolfson win the award for "Most Delusional People in the World"
Okay, all you voters in the other 49 states of America just stay home. The Clinton campaign has decreed you are irrelevant in this election cycle.
The Clinton campaign needs to stop making a fool of itself.  It's making the entire party look bad.
Again, Clinton surrogates are knowling stating falsehood (otherwise known as lying).  Rendell know Obama is not diminishing PA.  Obama will certainly pay more attention to PA than Clinton paid to any state where SHE was behind.  Obama, for example, gave more game in NY than Clinton did in Illinois.  Again, isn't it the media's job to POINT THIS OUT.  Sometimes spin amounts to lying.  Yes?
THE CLINTON PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN HAS, IS, AND WILL REMAIN DISGUSTING. THE CORONATION DELAYED, HAS BECOME THE ALL-ENCOMPASSING HUBRIS. CLINTON IS MORE MCCAIN THAN MCCAIN, AND SHOULD BECOME HIS RUNNING MATE AND LEAD AMERICA INTO A NEW CENTURY OF IMPERIAL EXPANSION, DESIGNED BY & FOR THE CORPORATE-MILITARY COMPLEX, AT THE EXPENSE OF "THE GREAT UNWASHED"!
The spins from the Clinton camp are ridiculous and becoming very stale.
Hillary has endorsed John McCain as ready to be president

Hillary trying to make Obama more black so the "Alabama in the middle" union rednecks wont vote for Obama

Hillary claims that only she can win the general election as a democrat

Obama releases his earmarks in a effort to show complete transparency (see link)

Why is hillary a democrat.. she should be asked to LEAVE THE PARTY..

Hillary you are not fooling anyone.  In no way shape or form did the Obama camp diminish Pennsylvania in their response.  Grow Up!
Why does Hillary's camp get so upset when Obama's camp responds to their rediculous spins?
Keith has bitten the bullet for Obama.Msnbc must have come down on him as to which side he must be on.He is a big disappointment to many fans.He needs to drop the good night and good luck.He is another one that should step down.
If someone on my staff wrote that I’d fire them,” said Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter, a Clinton supporter who was also on the call.

What the H***!
Must be some good pot and southern comfort at these conferance cals.
This whole thing reminds me of that Southpark episode where Johnnie Cochran did the Chewbacca Defense. The jury was completely baffled and acquitted out of sheer confusion.
Enough Already!
Ha Ha .... wait a few weeks and IF she'd be trailing she will not remember that this has ever been said.

What a joooooke. "Look! Look! This is a state I am leading in! THIS is an important state (now)".

The only other state she has won like Michigan (without anybody else up for election) is the great state of Denial. Congrats!

Better keep your hold on the lead, Billary. Don't come later and celebrate a 2% victory as a 'landslide' like on 03/04.
Here we go again on the "firing" comments.

Yes, we know your rhetoric on PA.  Its the same rhetoric that you have on every other state you don't win.

Message to Governor Rendell.  Diminishing every other state (and there are 49) is offensive when you are running to be President of the United StateS.  And even though you, to be sure, are governor of PA, you are a leadership figure in the democratic party.  You are being disengenous to both states who have voted and states who have yet to vote.

And, this part really needs to be said.  It is not Obama who is diminishing YOUR state.  Rather it is your candidate who has diminished so many.

Quite frankly, the Obama team editing the Clinton campaign memo is just humorous.  Guess they got under your skin Team Clinton.

Women for Obama 08
Yeah baby....eat it!!!! Looks like we are gonna get it together in PA.  Mark Penn and Wolfson should be her VP, it took some time but they have finally gotten it together.  After PA Obama should bow out and give Hillary his supporters so she can win the general.  He wasn't suppose to be in this anyway, this is hers.  He has no right to point at her record.

I can't wait for Mark or Howard to come up with a reply for all you Obama fans.  Even if they don't, after PA the Super Delegates will end this thing.  We won't even need Flor or Mich. That's more of an Obama distraction.  They voted fair and square and should be counted as such....no redos.

I think Mark should throw a racial statement out just before the election so we can all agree Obama's camp started it.  Yeah baby -08.  That's my girl.  Your sisterhood is with you!!!!!
Msnbc where is the story about Obama's church and why aren't you covering this matter. Fox news and politico.com have been covering this story. Another bias move by Msnbc. I see why your ratings are going in the toilet. You all covered Geraldine Ferraro all week, that story seem to be your focus. Lets play fair and have the story about Obama pastor, I guess it is not important when a pastor is caught humping in reference to bill clinton or refer to hillary with the N. word. Msnbc get with it. Readers go to foxnews.com and politico.com under politics, then to ben smith and you all can see the video.
Question for media participants in these Clinton campaign conference calls:

Are you all required to use your mute buttons to suppress the laughter that must result from the goal-posts-on-wheels daily spin of Clinton Communications Director Howard Wolfson, Chief Strategist Mark Penn, et all?

Hillary Clinton for President of Several States of America
The bare to bone fact is in Pennsylvania Hillary needs to do better than Obama did in Mississippi.
Anything that a 20% win in in a state whose demographics is a mix of Ohio working class whites who best represent the young governor Wallace wing of the party and the Ferraro senior citizen vote that best represents the "black bogey man is out to rape you" vote.
The real races left are in North Carolina & Indiana.
All of the remaining races are in the bag for the respective campaigns, including Michigan & Florida should they vote again.
In the final analysis it does not matter who has won which states, or has the most popular votes or the most pledged delegates.
In the end what matters is that the party of Bull Connor, young governor Wallace & Geraldine Ferraro will never permit a black man to lead it.
That is the bare the bone fact here.
This whole race was to be a great coming together of the party in crowning the Clinton family as the democratic parties participants in our new American Monarchy.
Nothing the voters can do will change this fact.
Patty in sd is right on this one.
More Hillary nonsense:  "The path to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue goes through Pennsylvania," (!?) "so if Barack Obama can't win there, how will he win the general election?"  Please, Hillary, give us a break.
Everyone's vote counts Hillary, Even WAAAY out here in insignificant (according to you) little ol' Washington State. Americans are still dying daily in Iraq, while we at home are being entertained by your daily stunts. Pathetic.
Barack's eye is on the ball. He's ready NOW!

yeah that was a complete joke.

sticking your head in the sand won't make the problem go away.

Racial divide is as real as a heart attack
I'm really confused...why is Mark Penn mad at the Obama camp? Perhaps because they are not falling for everything is about PA, but rather are focusing on ALL the remaining states. Isn't this why the Clinton campaign is losing? Because they forgot about the contests AFTER February 5.

Mark Penn and the Clinton campaign must think we are really dumb-or the media is.
Why hasn't MSNBC been on top of this story. This is Barack's self described mentor and the inspiration for his book "The Audacity of Hope". Not very fair and balanced are you MSNBC. You a perpetual propaganda piece for Obama.

Did you guys overlook this match up since you are busy posting them...or is it only about the "red States " Hillary is ahead:

UPDATED 3/13/08: As another sign of Barack's competitiveness in traditionally "red" states, a new SurveyUSA poll shows that Barack would carry the state of North Dakota in a fall match-up against John McCain:

Here’s one for the history books: A new poll from SurveyUSA found that if the presidential election were held now, Barack Obama would best John McCain in North Dakota. The sampling of 574 likely voters in the state said 46 percent would go for Obama, 42 percent for McCain. In the same poll, Sen. Hillary Clinton would lose to McCain, 54 percent to 35 percent among North Dakotans.

… Even the suggestion that a Democrat – any Democrat – can win the presidential vote in historically red-state North Dakota in 2008 is an eyebrow-raiser.

North Dakota has rarely been blue on the election map. Since statehood, North Dakotans have favored the Democratic presidential candidate only five times: Woodrow Wilson in 1912 and 1916, Franklin Roosevelt in 1932 and 1936; Lyndon Johnson in 1964.

With all the so-called experience, they can't do simple math.  Spin Spin Spin all the way.
Man, even Clinton supporters want Penn fired now.

"This is a race for delegates.” He also stressed Obama will focus on, in addition to Pennsylvania, the other 10 contests, including Indiana and North Carolina, which combined have more delegates at stake (187) than Pennsylvania (158)."

Yep..and he is favored in both states. Should he win, he would erase most if not all her delegate gains in PA.

Aren't they the ones who have barely campaigned in a half a dozen States?  All are important as they all have delgates.  They don;t want anyone to notice that their plan isn't working and therefore they are losing
Michael Nutter had better worry about his own job...in the future.  Backing Hillary in Philaphedia is not a career enhancement gesture
Ed Rendell says “Diminishing Pennsylvania is offensive" as opposed to diminishing every state Clinton lost, please Ed keep talking, you and your buddies continue to make Clinton look like the delusional dingbat she is.
It goes back to the fact that the "ENTIRE" Clinton Campain has always spun any and all news to meet their criteria and they do not care who they trash while doing it...when will America say enough of this...maybe when we are no longer looked up to as the nation of freedom!

Maybe the Clintons should run for the next election in RUSSIA??
This just in. . . It has been discovered that Mark Penn and Howard Wolfson were classmates with Baghdad Bob at the College of Public Relations.
Please make an OBJECTIVE report.  Don't just repeat the spin that the Clinton campaign tries to get out there.  Do you REALLY think that Pennsylvania is the "Superbowl"??? If you have any brains you'd say NO.  Why ALL the talk about Pennsylvania while there's no talk at all about NORTH CAROLINA.

Why are you letting the Clinton campaign dictate YOU(supposed journalists) what the NEWS should be.  Have you lost all of your journalistic integrity?  I'd like to think not.  PLEASE prove me wrong and DO YOUR JOB.  Please let the voters know facts:  Obama has won more states, more votes and more delegates, and he is favored to win North Carolina and maybe Indiana.  Please let the voters know that there are OTHER VERY IMPORTANT states other than Pennsylvania.  You let the Clinton campaign spin you into discounting 10 states(including two big swing states like Virginia and Wisconsin!!!).

Do your jobs PLEASE!!!!!!!!
Every time i hear these guys speak, i get the impression they are trying to convince us with jedi mind tricks. Either that, or they are pretending to be the Iraqi Defense Minister who used to tell his countrymen that Iraq was winning the war.
Here we go again..  Clinton for president of ONLY the United States that Matter!

A vote for her in PA does not automatically mean a vote for McCain in the General if she is not the Democratic nominee... I wish they would quit trying to spin things this way...

OBAMA '08 - YES WE CAN!
I love how they cherry pick their data.
If Obama Fails Will Race Be The Reason? NO!!!

If he fails, Obama says race will not be the reason
http://www.swamppolitics.com/news/politics/blog/2007/11/if_he_fails_obama_says_race_wi.html

Obama Say’s He’s Not Negative. Is He Divisive, Underhanded, Manipulative, Opportunistic, Impatient, Arrogant, or Diplomatic?

Who is Obama and why is he the frontrunner? Can we ask this question without being accused of racism?

Obama has less experience than any presidential candidate in recent history – That is why the issue of race is a legitimate question? Can Democrats win a General election, based on Obama’s performance so far, is “political correctness” tying the hands of the press, tying the hands of his opponents, and making the USA political process into an unfair match against Obama, who is using this situation to advance his positions in an unfair and unprecedented way, to win an unfair advantage in his run for the Presidency of the USA.

Some Obama backers cry "racism." We find the accusation to be unsubstantiated.
http://www.newsweek.com/id/119073

Obama has less experience than any presidential candidate in recent history. Yet, he has won so many caucuses and Southern States? Can't we try and understand why? Is that politically incorrect?
This warped logic is akin to justifying a war with bogus intellegence about WMD.

Just like Bush / Cheney, whatever fabrication supports the desired outcome becomes Hillary's  realty.
*********IMPORTANT****************

Barack Obma has released ALL his Senate earmarks(2005, 2006, 2007), and Hillary Clinton has so far REFUSED to release her earmarks.

Don't you think that's REAL NEWS, and important news that you should be covering???  Other than just reporting the Clinton spin verbatim???

This news is VERY IMPORTANT, as it clearly shows how SECRETIVE the Clinton campaign is.  Why else would they not release her earmarks or tax returns????  What are they hiding????  These are the questions you should ask and INVESTIGATE!!!!

Thank you.
Adam- I love the analogy. It's about time the Obama campaign refused to let the Clinton's determine which states matter and which don't. As a resident of Pennsylvania, I'm glad my state is coming at a crucial time, but I by no means feel more important than North Carolina or Indiana

OBAMA '08
Ed (i don't think people from my state will vote for a black canidate)Rendell should be  more concerned with the 1,2 million doller lawsuit in the Peter Paul case agaist the Clintons.
Adam -

That baseball analogy sums it up perfectly.  Obama's campaign has said they're going to compete the top and bottom of all 9 innings and any extra innings to win the game.

Hillary's campaign is saying that runs scored in the bottom of the inning should count as double, and runs scored in the 3rd, 5th, and 7th innings are the most important and should count triple.

If what I wrote doesn't make sense.....neither does the Clinton campaign's logic of how they intend to be the nominee when they can't tie or surpass Obama in pledged delegates, states won and total votes.
Why doesn't the DNC just hold primaries in CA, TX, PA, OH, FL, & MI?  Matter of fact, why not just appoint someone if the popular vote or delegate count do not matter?  The DNC cannot get out of its own way.  Looks like the Republicans will be running the show again.
