Clinton camp: Key(stone) to WH is PA

Posted: Thursday, March 13, 2008 2:17 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC’s Domenico Montanaro
Pennsylvania counts -- a lot, the Clinton campaign stressed on a conference call with reporters.

“If Barack Obama can’t win there, how can he win the general election?” Chief Strategist Mark Penn asked, re-iterating the thesis of a memo the Clinton camp sent out yesterday. That memo was ridiculed by the Obama campaign in a response e-mail to the media, which line-by-line commented on and edited the Clinton memo.

“If someone on my staff wrote that I’d fire them,” said Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter, a Clinton supporter who was also on the call.

All this comes on the heels of an Obama conference call yesterday when Obama Campaign Manager David Plouffe stressed, “This is not just about Pennsylvania. They [the Clinton campaign] are the prohibitive favorite in Pennsylvania. We will not be defined by Pennsylvania. We will try to get the most votes and delegates, but we won’t cherry-pick states.”

Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell, a Clinton surrogate also on the call, took humbrage. “Diminishing Pennsylvania is offensive,” he said.

Plouffe added in yesterday's call a famliar refrain for the Obama campaign: “This is a race for delegates.” He also stressed Obama will focus on, in addition to Pennsylvania, the other nine contests, including Indiana and North Carolina, which combined have more delegates at stake (187) than Pennsylvania (158).

At the crux of the Clinton camp's argument is that Pennsylvania is a critical swing state. But this is not a general election; it’s a primary and as NBC’s Mark Murray wrote yesterday there is no direct correlation historically between primary victories and general-election ones.

In addition, a poll the Clinton campaign cited on the call to show that their candidate holds an 18-point lead in Pennsylvania, also shows Obama faring slightly better than Clinton against McCain among Keystone Staters in a general-election match up.

“Look there are different polls explaining different things,” Clinton Communications Director Howard Wolfson explained when asked about it. He cited the recent NBC/Wall Street Journal poll, which “shows them in same place” against McCain.

He continued, “The bottom line is, and the Obama campaign would admit to this, the general election is going to be extremely competitive, and John Mccain is going to be a very formidable nominee… I don’t think there is any sense, from the Obama campaign, that it would be somehow a cakewalk. All the polls show both candidates are running equal against Sen. McCain. That’s somewhat less important than nominating the best person.”

That's not quite the same thing as saying, “If Barack Obama can’t win there [in Pennsylvania], how can he win the general election?”

Thank you Keith Olbermann for saying your "Special Comment".... It's all so true.... I'm a 54-year-old White Woman and a supporter of Obama from day one... We need a true leader like Barack Obama.
Clinton will, I'm sure, try to frame the debate as Pennsylvania being decisive.

Its ridiculous and hopefully the media doesn't blindly accept the argument. All fifty states are important. Their relative importance by size is already factored into the number of delegates they will send to the convention.
Seriously ... how stupid is THAT argument! This is a PRIMARY! If Billary thinks she can win any state against McCain with 50% of the Democrats she will only strike a decisive victory in the state of Denial.

Billary is running her campaign very 'republican' but in November there will actually some issues to discuss. It's a fact that there are no major difference on the issues between Obama and Billary. It's mostly about the personal qualifications, vision and electability. So that primary poll or result later has no bearing for the general election.

Her goal is anyway to break up the party to come back and 'save' us in 2012 ... it's so obvious. The superDs should stop this bleeding.
Great strategy by the Obama camp...  Dis Pennsylvania! Dis Michigan! Dis Florida! Dis Ohio! Dis all the big states with huge electoral college votes.

Brilliant!

Oh gee whiz, now Rendell is starting to sound like Penn and Wolfson. No one said they were diminishing Pennsylvania. What people are saying as well as the Obama camp is that Pennsylvania while just as  important as other States is not the superbowl and that there are other State primaries and contests coming up besides Pennsylvania.

So I suppose if we followed the Clinton thinking on Pennsylvania Hillary could lose every single State in the US except Pennsylvania and if she wins Pennsylvania then she should be awarded the nomination? Her desparation is sad but has also become down right comical.
Mr. Olberman was right and theis just confims it. Self destruction mode enhanced by her campaign, the ships takeing on water lock everyone in thier cabins.
Mark Penn is a fool.  Hillary Clinton hired him and continues to pay him upwards of a million dollars a month.

Who you employ as a manager says a ton about the type of person and manager that you are.  The fact that she has Mark Penn as her "chief strategist" PROVES that either 1) she's not experienced or 2) she has awful judgment.
I have a question for Mark Penn and Howard Wolfson. If Hillary can't win the nomination by getting the most delegates, should we just declare her the "Queen of the Democrats" and ignore the choice of the people. Don't these two ever get tired of posing as idiots?
I just don't get how the Clintons can say and do anything and people just eat it up?

Yes Republicans, I have always seen this but I'm not so sure why you dislike Bill so much. Is it because he basically stole your corporate agenda and your corporate donors?

That, my Democratic friends, is why we should pack the Clintons in moth balls! NAFTA....WTO....and the corporate influence that they, including their friend Ed Rendell, allowed to infect the party. Bill Clinton drug this party down with him in the 90's and now Hillary is starting her own quest.
I know Mark Penn has to have some semblance of intelligence to make it as far as he has, but how can an individual be so smart and so stupid all at the same time.

Better make what you can of this spotlight while you have it Mark because, when the dust settles, your Keystone Cops approach to running a major political campaign is going to haunt you for a long time.
The Clinton campaign is utterly stupid, I can't believe anyone actually believes a word that comes out of their mouths.

Clinton didn't care about Florida or Michigan until she realized that Obama can actually win against her. Soon after, she's screaming to have FL and MI seated (he wasn't even on the ballot in one of them), despite the fact that they knowingly broke the rules.

The Clinton campaign has said a number of States don't matter - typically Republican states don't matter, states with large black populations don't matter, caucuses don't matter, etc. It's amazing how much of a coincidence it is that the only states that "matter" are the states Clinton has won.

They also keep moving the goal posts. Clinton set her sights on Super Tuesday, then she got demolished. Then, she looked to big wins in OH and TX to bring her back. She won in OH. But she only won by 3% in TX, and after the delegates from the caucus are counted, Obama will walk out of TX with more delegates. Now, she's moving the goal posts to PA.

It doesn't matter, though. Obama will win most (if not all) of the States and a good majority of the delegates until PA, effectively killing her "come back."

He's ahead in pledged delegates by 150, he's ahead in the popular vote by more than 700,000, and he's won twice as many States as her. Superdelegates are supporting him left and right, sometimes 3 or 4 a day, and she's lucky to get 2 a week (in weeks where she doesn't LOSE superdelegates, anyway). Then, she had the nerve to say that maybe HE could be HER VP?

Speaking of those numbers, there is no realistic mathematical way for her to come back from all this, she's behind so much. Obama will win this nomination, and hopefully, he will be the next President of the United States.
Now we call on Senator Hillary Clinton to immediately release her earmark requests for 2005, 2006, and 2007. Senate Obama has released his earmark requests for 2005, 2006, and 2007. We are still waiting for Sen. Clinton to release her tax returns, White House Documents, List of Contributors to the Clinton Presidential Library and other secret documents they may have in their possession.
George
Hillary is down by 2 touchdowns with 2 minutes left.  She has the ball, but her staff is likely to fumble under the pressure.  Even if the Obama team has to give up a few yards in PA, it will all be gained back in NC and Indiana.  Obama be cool, and let the Clinton hotheads throw a few more bad passes.

The Slate delegate counter (now with an option to count FL and MI)shows that even with a few generous wins for the Clintons, Hill will still come up short.

Give up, Hill, you are just giving ammo to McCain and your "southern strategy" is destroying everything you and Bill ever tried to do in the past.
To all the REAL Democrats:

Before you write off Obama, remember, Clinton started with the negative attacks, and people said, “oh he’s too weak to stand up to her” Then he does and he becomes a monster. Clinton has done quite a bit of lying, her experience for one.

She started the race baiting, BLACK PEOPLE VOTE DEMOCRATIC. They voted for Bill Clinton, and can you just face it we don’t want HER.

So before you sit and call him a liar, GET THE FACTS FOR YOURSELF. Most of you post comments and don’t even read the article. Your comments are based on the title of the article.

Before you hand this country over to another Republican, GO TO THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS AND LOOK AT  CLINTONS’ RECORD AND THEN LOOK AT OBAMAS’. HE HAS DRAFTED AND HAD PASSED HUNDREDS  MORE BILLS THAN CLINTON. YOU CAN SEE HIS IS ABOUT ENERGY, FINANCE, SECURITY. HERS IS ABOUT NAMEING A GARDEN, DECLARING HOLIDAYS!

http://thomas.loc.gov-  click for bills and resolutions!

Then and only then you will make an educated decision! Don’t be fooled, this is a very important decision!

NBC interviewed some voter in Ohio and they spewed some lies about Obama, they had “heard”. They were shocked when the reporter told them they were not even true.

Her experience has been debunked several times and many people are too enraged to even notice. She has even admitted, she was not at the table, nor had the security clearance.

For all the Rezko comments, her jury trial, Peter Paul VS Bill Clinton, Hillary Rodham Clinton, Penn. GOV Ed Rendell and their lawyer Levin, began in February, but many are too caught up to even pay attention. 3 yes THREE of Rezko co-defendants indicted have contributed to Hillary Campaign, both Senate and Presidential. Get your FACTS!

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21134540/vp/23601329#23601329  Wow, I guess this sums up recent events and Hillarys’ campaign!
Wait, Rendell thinks that "diminishing Pennsylvania is offensive", does he?  How about the Clinton campaign "diminishing" every state that Obama has won?
LOL.  Adam, you said it well!

The Clintons don't have much to base their argument on given that they're running behind Obaham using every possible standard of measurement.  Since they aren't willing to give up yet, they have to come up with SOMETHING that will assert their dominance.  It's sad that they couldn't come up with anything better.
Even I will admit that just because a candidate doesn't win a particular state in a primary, doesn't mean he/she won't win it in the general election.  It's simple math once the party rallies behind the eventual nominee...That's like saying that just because McCain didn't win Iowa or Utah, he's not going to win them in the general election...and we all know Iowa and Utah are some of the reddest of states guaranteed to go to the republican.
It is so ridiculous to make a statement like this. This is Dem Vs Dem...it will be Dem Vs Rep in Nov. In the last 40 years the Dems haven't exactly dominated Florida. Just like Ohio. Without the others vote neither is likely to win PA. Obama is after all 50 states. Hillary has cherry picked. The one with the most votes generally wins an election. The clinton campaign is run by a bunch of power grabbing egotists, headed up by Clinton who is only out to satisfy her own quest for power. people need to inform themselves of the politics of Clinton instead of listening to the spin and lies that this campaign puts forth.
The Clinton's continue to divide, divide, divide! Race against race, gender against gender, & now state against state.

If this is a campaign for CHANGE then we need a uniter, not a divider.

Vote Obama!
Can somebody please respectfully tell the Clinton campaign to let it go already. I respect Senator Clinton but i also respect this process and at the end of the day a real leader noticed that he/she should set the example and model the way for their constituents. In this case the constituents are the men and women of the Democratic party. This is not about individual accomplishments. A unified Democratic party is unstoppable. Democrats need to rally behind the frontrunner for the good of the party and the good of the country. You all can and should win in November. Please don't blow your chances. If Senator Clinton was in the position of Senator Obama..I am positive people and the media would have called for him to drop out when Senator Clinton won 11 in a row and is still behind in delegates, pouplar votes, and states won at this point. So since Senator Obama is ahead of all these at this point let the people unite and get behind Senator Obama and get this general election campaign on the way. That is the only way that you all will beat the republicans. Clinton and Obama supporters who say they will vote republican or not vote if their candidate does not prevail in the primary need to wisen up. This is nto about your candidate. it is much bigger than your candidate. This is about democratic ideal and turning this country around domestically and internationally. WHY THE BITTERNESS PEOPLE!!! Stop being selfish.........
"...Mark Penn and Howard Wolfson win the award for "Most Delusional People in the World" ..."
BL, Cincinnati OH (Sent Thursday, March 13, 2008 2:26 PM)

BL, nah.....Obama's surrogates already have that sewn up.
If you can't win New York, AND you can't win California,....and then you lose Pennsylvania too, then you probably can't win the general election. It's as simple as that.
Let's not B.S. each other here with stories of who won what state in 1992, blah, blah blah.....
Let's get to the facts, and in 2008 the facts are; that these three states are Democratic strongholds.
Regardless of what someone does in red state caucuses, and "open" primaries" if they can't win in states that are traditionally "blue' then they can't win "the general."
In order for Democrats to take back the White House, we have to change the electoral map.
Hillary would win NY, Ohio, Pa, Texas, Florida, and California. Three of those states were red in 2000 and 2004.
The super delegates have to look at the bigger picture here. This isn't about electing the "Rock Star of the Year," or choosing "Mr. Charisma 2008."
It's about choosing a President of The United States. I think the kids who support Obama sometimes forget about that.

Hey Hillary the fat lady is singing !!

No wait that's not singing, she's yelling for Bill to wake up and get the hell out. Spitzer's waiting in the hall.
Trev,
You responded to my Florida/Michigan analogy that said no good parent in their right mind would suddenly say to their kid "yes honey, I know you broke the rules but because you're throwing a temper-tantrum, I'll overlook it just this time."  Your response and twist on the analogy was clever (punishing Florida is like punishing my son for what my daughter did").  However, it's grossly and logically flawed.

We live in a representative democracy.  If the voters in Florida and Michigan are angry with what has happened to them (and they should be), they should fire the people who made the decision.   You know as well as I the reason the Dem Party had to penalize Florida and Michigan.  If they did not, EVERY state would have moved its primary up and there would have been a fight to see how many states could have their primaries in DECEMBER.

All the rest of this is just noise and childish behavior by Senators, Representatives, and Clinton activists who are upset that she is losing.  You know it.  I know it.  And the rhetoric about "disenfranchisement" doesn't fool anybody with a brain.
Adam,

That's a perfect analogy.
1600 Pennsylvania goes through Washington D.C.  I think Barack won that contest and 29 others thus far.  Mark Penn needs a new map.
Dear Friends:
The personal tragedy in the situation of New York is not the error on his part, but on the error of the FBI. Centuries and throughout religious and early English, European, French, Jewish, Arabic laws and cannon laws and laws of religion the act of prostitution is a sin and crime.  Thus the FBI are negligent should be dismissed for setting up the man and not taking legal action against prostitution rings and individual.  This opens the gate to these acts across the USA in a manner that reglious sacraments and and civil laws are not protected.  The crime is by the prostitute and the FBI manipulating and patronizing the act of prostitute.  They have been sucked into the assistance of the crime instead of the protection of the criminal act and disease.  If any woman or man offers themselves for sex on a street corner or elsewhere for profit and manipulation or set up politically this is forgery and deceptive and beyond it has made the FBI to protect this crime.   It is a tragedy and I am not certain of what was in his mind, or brain ( a tumor or foreign object could cause pressure on the brain ) and cause a different action of judgement.  I am not condoning a person to succumb to the twisted and warped deviant sexual behaviors and illegal of prostitutes, for our society or individual private life.  But we have seen historically where prostitutes were used as spies and or the manipulation of government and the down fall of society or individual for personal gain.  Until equality of justice is consistantly applied toward prostitutes, prostitution rings and pimps, drug dealers, political activists and other government parties have the right and are given POWER to destroy and can lead to even terrorists and or communists or insurgents into power and government.  I suggest the man from New York get an attorney and claim the FBI were involved in this prostitutes political manipulation and spy.  His spouse and family should also file a claim and himself against them and claim that the attempt was made to deface him politically and their marriage personally.  What money was paid? Evidence.     Who ordered the filming of the act by the FBI.   Too many in the government to be logical.   Who gained an African American placed in power not by vote?     Prejudiced press also caused the reaction which prejudice the public and the courts.  This is against the law.  By including photos of the family you have humiliated, embarrassed, accused and abused his spouse himself and his family.    For a prostitute!    Thou shalt not want what thy neighbor has.  Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor. ( his spouse and denying her protitutional part and filming it for public influence and money)   Make it stop!!!! Stop rewarding prostitutions and rings and pimps or Queens of the rings.

It is tragic when in this time in history a woman of recognised intelligence cannot express herself in New York when she is made to feel her freedom of speach is a threat, denied and not allowed to express in public.  Yet historically the same was true of Black woman on a bus.  Well today and in this election Obama has called caucasians whitey White and made reference in every way possible of color.  If she were a Latino and the same response was given it would be threatening and she would not have left office.   Intimidation of fear of speaking in this nations is not allowed it is against our constitutional right.  We are not to be denied our personal opinion when not a personal threat to another. Political voting and manipulation of the press also intimidation.  If the woman were asian the same emotional cry and tears and threat silence or spoken would not have been the same.  She happened to be working and supporting his opponent.  Not a threat but a political statement shared by several.  Freedom of which Obama only sees from one color.  You have slapped the faces of All caucasian woman and men for history and it is not acceptable.   Wake up!!! you are pushing America back 50 years.   Freedom is not fear of saying I disagree and this sounds and feels like prejudice.  Prejudice is prejudice it is not to be called reverse discrimination.  There is no such thing.  It is prejudice.
Clinton's Minister of Propaganda speaks again:

"Nothing up my sleave...Look!We can win!!"

"Pay no attention to that Truth behind the curtain."

"Seriously, we can win. Come on guys, I'm serious."
Why does the media keep reporting on Clintons ever changing as to what is most important and what is the decision date?  It is getting weak and long to continue to hear about what is the decision date and state.

The Clintons will continue to use new messages to manipulate the public and media as to why they should be the winner.  In addition, in the back room they will continue to twist the arms of the super delegates.
I think the point that these staffers are missing is the following questions: Is the primary open to all?  Can people who are not Democrats vote in the primary as Democrats?

That goes for all the contests...  How many of them were open and who won them?  If Obama won all the open primaries and caucuses, then I think he has a better chance at winning in the fall; especially if the wins were by wide margins.  I think that is the thing that people are missing; are these primaries and caucuses open to all for the Democratic ticket, and if so, who has done better?  I am willing to believe that Obama did better.
Damn, it took a while to realize this but I just figured it out. For weeks now, I’ve been calling on America to wake up to see the real Clinton only to just come to the realization that I’ve been wasting my time on that cause. Man, it just hit me. Let me make my point here. For all of Clinton’s tactics, she solely deserves to use it. Why? Number 1, because America is still racist and divided and 2, she is white and a woman. Obama dare not respond with attack or else he is finished. If that man utters anything remotely close to a personal attack on Hillary Clinton, we will crucify him like there is no tomorrow, so he is being smart and like a little black man that he is, taking it left and right like a good trooper. At this point, Clinton can call Obama a stupid ignorant N-word, we will flock to her for being courageous to speak her mind. Her campaign should have ended a long time ago with the weekly attacks and flat out insults if it was anybody else. She throws it out like freebees and yet commanding a historical support. When media tries to point it out, her campaign pays lip service and moves on to the next attack. I live in Pennsylvania and they have already count my state in for her which means we don’t even have any say on it. They say she owns this state and sure enough her attack continues on a fellow democrat and we have not denounced or rejected it. The repulsion that will come out of us if it were Obama is frightening. My advice for Obama is this, keep your head down, lay low and keep chugging along. If you earn the nomination and they snatch it from you, remember one thing, they reelected George Bush and they don’t care if you will change this country, they just don’t want a black man taking the presidency from a white woman and until Pennsylvania take back their state from her, that is just the way it is gonna be my friend. Good luck to you Obama and please no matter what she does, don’t fight back, it will only bury you. Everybody is watching what she is doing and a good number of people are rewarding her for her attacks and they are just waiting for you to raise your big mouth, then it is all over because the outcry will be deafening. We shall overcome
Hey. These are Clinton insiders prone to spinning it their candidate's way. Hillary has chosen not to be defined by the 25+ states she's lost and I don't see any of them taking umbridge over that.
DID ANYONE ELSE SEE THE MEDIA EVENT YESTERDAY WITH SENATOR OBAMA AND THE MILITARY LEADERS EXPLAINING WHY THEY ARE ENDORSING HIM AND WHY THEY FEEL HE WOULD MAKE A GOOD COMMANDER AND CHIEF???  I am trying to find out why this did not get mention in the news yesterday????  Below is an email I am sending to all of the media to try to find out.  I don't watch television but I have only looked online and was only able to find a poorly made short clip on You Tube??

I am VERY concerned about what happened yesterday.  I watched video of an event that was streamed live on CNN with Senator Obama.  It was a response to the 'commander and chief' issue that Senator Clinton has challenged Senator Obama on.  He was in front of a podium that said Judgement to Lead and there were many military leaders there who are supporting him. Several of them spoke and talked about why they support Senator Obama and why they believe that he would make a great commander and chief.  Then Senator Obama answered several questions and he did so VERY well in my opinion.  I was very excited about this event and told people about it.  They and I were expecting to see coverage of some sort in the news last night.  I understand that the Geraldine Ferraro story took all of the healines but I expected some coverage somewhere.  It's as if the event has been blacked out.  No mention of the military leaders expressing their opinions that he has the judgement and temperament to be commander and chief.  When Hillary Clinton met with military leaders and flat out denegrated Senator Obama's ability to lead it was reported everywhere.  He responds and it isn't even on the bottom of the page.  Can't be found anywhere?  What is going on?  I have written to CNN to find out how I can buy a copy of this event.  I am going to keep raising this issue until somebody tells me what happened here.  It makes no sense to me.  CNN was obviously there.  Other reporters must have been there.  What on earth could have prevented this event from being reported on.  It ws a BIG DEAL!!!  I am going to write to every media person I can until someone can tell me what happened?  Was there a blackout?  This is a disservice to the public and interference in a hard fought battle for president.  Instead you do see articles about Hillary's plan to win Pennsylvania??  What on earth would keep the media from reporting on something lke that?  Again, I am very concerned about what this could mean??
OBAMA/EDWARDS '08
I have lost a great amount of respect for Gov. Rendell in past weeks. He has effectively jumped on board the Clinton bandwagon and has begun to twist facts in a manner similar to that of Mark Penn and Howard Wolfson.

At what point did Obama's campaign diminish the importance of Pennsylvania? If anything, David Plouffe has gone out of his way to note the importance of this state and the fact that Obama intends to compete heavily there.

If I were a resident of Indiana, North Carolina or Kentucky, I would be offended by Gov. Rendell and Howard Wolfson's inferences that Pennsylvania is more important than any of the 10 states slated to follow in this primary season.

This is simply another case of the Clinton campaign grasping at straws and spinning reality to make themselves appear to be in a dead heat with the Obama camp. Pennsylvania is not the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, it is merely one of 50 some odd stops along the way....
If Mark Penn was competent, he would not be in this position.  He happens to be very lucky to be an overweight, overpayed nitwit.  And the media is very caught up in the concept.
Just more of the Clinton machine willing to do and say anything to get the nomination, even to the point of giving the general election to Sen. McCain.

Have they no shame.
Humbug on Humbrage. Note to Rendell. Diminishing blacks is also offensive.
I think Penn and Wolfson, have spun so much that they are beginning to get dizzy!!
“If Barack Obama can’t win there, how can he win the general election?” Chief Strategist Mark Penn asked

Okay, fine.  The point is, dumbass, he is running for the nomination, and he can, and will, win the nomination with or without Pennsylvania.  Accordingly, your point is moot, at best, and all Clinton is doing is seeking to create a self-fulfilling prophecy.  And, this diminishes the voters' (in Pennsylvania, and elsewhere) ability to make a good decision---don't you think we understand that winning in November is what it is all about?

This has been the consistent, unwavering theme of the Clinton candidacy---from the candidate down, btw:  We know better than you what is good for you and the country and we wholly disrespect, voters, your intellect and right and ability to choose.  This, Senator Clinton, is why you will not win.  There is no pill magic enough to cure this problem.  And, btw, were there no Barack Obama, it is why you would have had a snowball's chance in hell of winning in November.

Pack your campaign in now.
Ha ha! The Clinton Campaign never lets the facts get in the way of its arguments.
The Clinton campaign is getting really desperate and will do ANYTHING to win the nomination, even at the expense of the entire democratic party!
Oh, Ed, get a grip...Sheesh.
