Clinton v. Obama: The Obama offensive

Posted: Monday, March 17, 2008 9:12 AM by Mark Murray

If yesterday's back-and-forth conference calls were any indication, the Clinton v. Obama race is going to nastier and more personal. "Obama communications director Robert Gibbs called on Clinton to release full post-White House tax returns; disclose all ‘earmarks,’ or pet projects, the New York senator had inserted into spending bills; and release all documents on the Clinton Foundation and the Clinton Presidential Library, including a list of donors."

“‘This is a tried and true technique of the Obama campaign that has repeatedly shifted negative when they find the momentum working against them,’ said senior Clinton strategist Mark Penn. He suggested the Obama campaign was trying to ‘deflect public opinion from their losses in Ohio and Texas’ and from Clinton's strength in Pennsylvania."

Clinton communications director Howard Wolfson made a great point during his campaign’s response call: If the Obama campaign was so sure this race was wrapped up on the delegate front, then why were they preparing a full-frontal assault? While many of us can't find a delegate path for Obama, Wolfson claims the Obama campaign must have found one. Also of note from yesterday's conf. calls, NBC/NJ's Athena Jones notes: For at least the third time in the last two days, when given an opportunity to comment on Obama's handling of Rev. Jeremiah Wright, the campaign declined.

Indeed, NBC’s Abby Livingston reports that while campaigning on Saturday, Clinton was asked about Wright. She said, “I think those are questions for Senator Obama and for the Obama campaign.”

The Washington Post looks at the swing vote demo group we've been talking about for some time: white men. "The competition for the support of white men, particularly those defined as working class, will shape the showdown between Clinton and Obama in Pennsylvania's Democratic presidential primary on April 22. Obama (Ill.) won majorities among those voters in what appeared to be breakthrough victories in Wisconsin and Virginia last month. But he badly lost working-class white men to Clinton (N.Y.) in Ohio and Texas two weeks ago, keeping the outcome of the Democratic race in doubt indefinitely."

Well, this will feed the blog conspiracy theorists. The Boston Globe takes a look at the sudden spike in GOP support for Clinton ever since McCain wrapped up the GOP nod. "Spurred by conservative talk radio, GOP voters who say they would never back Clinton in a general election are voting for her now for strategic reasons: Some want to prolong her bitter nomination battle with Barack Obama, others believe she would be easier to beat than Obama in the fall, or they simply want to register objections to Obama. ‘It's as simple as, I don't think McCain can beat Obama if Obama is the Democratic choice," said Kyle Britt, 49, a Republican-leaning independent from Huntsville, Texas, who voted for Clinton in the March 4 primary. ‘I do believe Hillary can mobilize enough [anti-Clinton] people to keep her out of office.’”

This is one of those talking points the Clinton campaign has been embracing but in its own way: In conference call after conference call, Mark Penn has been crowing about Clinton's growing support among Republicans.

In a memo it has released before Clinton’s Iraq speech today, the Clinton campaign says:
“Over the last few weeks, the question of who is most ready to be commander-in-chief has rightfully dominated the presidential campaign. Who is ready to take the 3am call? Who has a record of action on national security issues? Who is ready to be president on day one? Senator Clinton has worked to answer these questions by presenting her record to voters and enabling them to judge her based on the record she has amassed during her 35 years of public service - as a first lady who traveled to 82 countries and as a U.S. Senator who sits on the Armed Services Committee.”

“Lacking a comparable record, Senator Obama has premised his campaign on just words, most notably the resounding speech he delivered in October 2002 against the Iraq war.”

HILLARY-JUDAS- TO ALL AFRICAN AMERICAN VOTERS- SHE NEVER NEEDED THE AFRICAN AMERICAN VOTE ANYWAY, SO SHE IS TRYING TO NIGGERFY OBAMA- DAMN THAT GIRL IS GOOD...
SCARE WHITES HALF TO DEATH AND BLACKEN HIM SOME MORE....
DO YOU PEOPLE REALLY THINK THAT THE REPUBLICANS, INDEPENDENTS AND CLINTON SUPPORTERS ARE GOING TO VOTE FOR OBAMA NOW. HAHAHA RIGHT! I DON'T THINK SO MEL (Sent Monday, March 17, 2008 10:19 AM):

Mel:

If you are so sure of yourself about this then why are you even coming on here making comments? According to you no one is going to support Obama at all. So there is no need for you to come back on these threads and post anymore comments. Right? If you do come back and post more comments we'll take it you are really not sure and that most likely Obama will win this election.

Your call Mel. Stay away, post no more comments and that will support your claim because you have nothing to worry about, or post again and prove you are for of BS, worried and that what you say is bogus. Up to you Mel.
WE DON'T CARE ABOUT THE TAX RETURNS. WE WANT TO KNOW MORE ABOUT HIS POOR JUDGEMENT.
GIVE IT UP REZKO, WRIGHT ARE POOR JUDGEMENT, AND HE WILL BE HELD JUST AS ACCOUNTABLE AS YOU WOULD HOLD CLINTON TO IT. WORDS DO MATTER ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU LIE ABOUT YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH YOUR REVEREND AND YET HAVE SAID MANY TIMES HE IS YOUR MENTOR. (JUDGEMENT)
OBAMA SUPPORTERS CAN'T STOP THIS ONE YOUR MAN RUN ON JUDGEMENT AND WORDS MATTER. HE HAS HURT HIMSELF PEOPLE ON OTHER BLOGS ARE TALKING ABOUT HOW THEY WOULD LIKE THEIR VOTE BACK OR HOW THEY WILL NOT VOTE FOR HIM. SO GOOD LUCK, A TALK ABOUT RACISM BY HIM WOULD NOT BE HONEST SINCE HE AND AXCELROD HAVE CRIED RACISM SO MANY TIMES ITS NOT FUNNY. THIS ONE HAS BITING HIM IN HIS BUTT.
This is ridiculous. Everytime Obama points out Hillary's obvious shortcomings, she's like, "Oh he got negative and he said he wouldn't". Is that your only defense? There's a difference between your underhanded shady tactics, Hillary, and Obama calling a spade a spade.
Democrats, get real, you're going up against a guy like John McCain. Don't you think the republicans are going to ask for these documents?
Clinton is a "HUCKABEE"! She CAN'T win, yet she WON'T STOP! She can't win, yet she pulls the Frontrunner of her OWN PARTY into the ditch with her. Is THIS because she WANTS Obama to LOSE to McCain so SHE can be the Nominee in 2012? THAT'S where MY money is...
Give me a break on the pastor comments. if a white person were to watch a full year of tapes from ANY black church, they would probably be offended. Get over it. it's not hate speech. it's non-threatening, and people are in denial that a lot of it was true. they pull the one part about "GD America" out and ignore the rest which they don't like, about 3 strikes laws and things. it wasn't the best choice of words, but it's not saying he hates america. only pointing out the obvious flaws in the "american way."
DO YOU PEOPLE REALLY THINK THAT THE REPUBLICANS, INDEPENDENTS AND CLINTON SUPPORTERS ARE GOING TO VOTE FOR OBAMA NOW. HAHAHA RIGHT! I DON'T THINK SO

YOU REALLY NEED TO SEE, THIS IS A BIG PROBLEM BIGGER THEN YOU THINK, THE MAJORITY OF HIS CAMPAIGN IS BUILT ON HIS JUDGEMENT WELL THIS IS THE WORST JUDGEMENT YOU COULD SHOW TO A REPUBLICAN OR A BLUE COLLAR WORKER.
PARTLY LISA WHY YOU CAN'T GET IT (NO OFFENSE) ITS IMMATURITY.
WRITE WHAT YOU WANT BUT DON'T BE SUPRISED WHEN THE POLLS START FALLING AND THE SUPERS STOP ENDORSING HIM.
WHAT WILL YOU DO THEN?
MEL (Sent Monday, March 17, 2008 10:19 AM)
America is not going to vote for anyone whose pastor proclaims "God D**m America" and distancing yourself for a few months does not overturn 20 years of attendance at this church.

Superdelegates who held their decision were wise.  Clearly the vetting of Obama has turned up this evidence of an unacceptable candidate.

MSNBC, you backed the wrong guy!

Just like America won't vote for a guy who interned and called J. William Fulbright (a segregationist) his mentor?
All of the negative ties Clinton has and people are freaking out about this? Sheesh, Rezko was a campaign contributor and when Obama found out about shady dealings he donated the money to charity. what more could he have done. clinton won't even hand over her tax returns she has so much to hide but her sheep blindly follow... :(
BILL CLINTON ALSO APOLIGIZED FOR SLAVERY. YOU FOOL
BRINGING UP OLD STUFF DOES NOT MATTER ANYMORE, YOU CAN NOT SAY ANYTHING WE DO NOT ALREADY KNOW AND REALLY NO LONGER CARE ABOUT. WHY? BECAUSE WE HAVE GROWN UP AND MOVED ON.
SO YOU BETTER TAKE A GOOD LOOK AT YOUR OWN CANDIDATE HIS JUDGEMENT REALLY SU**S.  REMEMBER WORDS MATTER

Oh now we cannt question Obama he might get hurt?He has secreat service and his wife has some kind of security.Everytime anyone questions him they are racist, fear mongering, biased, mongers of one time or other. You cannt tell me this wasnt worked out before he started. He could have gone by Barry like he did before.Barack settles with blacks more.He knew his middle name would cause questions so it will be fear mongering and his supporters use it as told.Obama used race and did on purpose to meld all blacks and make a changed country like his pastor says. Change those white enemies. Our time has come.Obama made Clintons out to be racist and they sure werent and still arent.Blacks liked Clinton for they did so much and have so much more they want to do.They honor all people thats why Hillary took time out to go to Black State of Union and Black newspaper group. She could have taken the easy road but like a true pres. she faced the people and delt with it head on. Honor, decency, streangth and JUDGEMENT.says it all
Good morning Obama supporters,

Glad to see that you're beginning to awake.  Sorry that "The Dream" you've been having was actually a nightmare.

You can rest well tonight though, knowing now that Obama no longer has any "hope" of running this great country!
Clinton, were are the d**m papers?
Whether it helps Obama's campaign or not, I'd really like to see how the Clintons accumulated so much wealth after leaving the White House. More pointedly if our White House is also for sale as the Congress is already. If there's nothing, Obama will lose out on insisting discloser, more reason to disclose for Hillary.
If you search the Internet hard enough you'll find Hillary Clinton's  Thesis From college . I see that the way this primary has turned are all techniques she described that her Hero the Marxist Alinsky from Chicago ascribed to.To rub raw the sores of society with inflamatory statements to divide the voters .
People - this Boston Globe story - this is the really big story and it has big implications - it means that every primary from now until the end is going to be infected by Republicans voting for Clinton who don't intend to vote for her November.  That has HUGE implications - it means every primary from here on in is not truly reflecting the will of those who intend to vote Democrat in November.  Do you see the danger here?  Pay attention, this is actually really important.
For all people that want to denounce and reject Obama for the words of his Former Pastor . You would not have voted for him anyway. Face the truth you were looking for any reason to not vote him and this is just another reason to hide behind. America has a long standing problem that we dont want to face. It's called bigotry, and all races are guilty of it .The bigger question is can we step away from it .
Mark Murray, continues to be HRC's pet project on first read
In education, we teach that it is important to go back to the sources, read, inquire, and then make educated decisions.  I continue to make the educated decision to support Barack Obama.
Debmood - Nothing is even more disturbing and dangerous than your source -if that isn't race baiting I don't know what is.  The Black Star News?  What in the world is that?  Maybe we need a quote from the White Star news or the Chinese Star news, or how about the Mexican Star news?
If Obama wants any respect from all the mothers in this nation (not just the black ones) he better start honoring his mother and her family and leave the black stuff alone - that in itself is what causes the race stir up and I for one am sick and tired of it.  how about something for real from just the "news" - no color attatched?  Most of the white people I know are well past the race thing - when will the black population be past it as well?
Obama is a class act and he is what America needs now - Hillary is better than Bush, but not the equal of Obama - it's the plain truth. Bill Clinton knows this, you can tell by the way he tries to marginalize Obama. The GOP and neocons definitely recognize Obama as not only someone who can beat McCain, but as someone who will destroy their precious corrupt oligarchy. And although some of what Wright said was over the top, much of what he said is true. It will be the one issue that Fox News et al will rally around, but it has little strength in light of the actual evil that the Bush administration has wrought and what his designated successor McCain plans to prolong.
