Clinton speaks on the economy

From NBC/NJ's Athena Jones
WASHINGTON, DC -- In remarks after her speech on Iraq here this morning, Hillary Clinton said she was watching the developments in US financial markets closely after efforts by the Federal Reserve over the weekend to try to head off a crisis.

The Fed has lowered the discount rate to increase liquidity in the market and helped JP Morgan buy troubled firm Bear Stearns.

Clinton said she had spoken this morning with the Treasury secretary and the president of the New York Federal Reserve about the steps taken yesterday to restore confidence in the market and said that as a senator from New York, she was concerned about the impact these developments could have on workers and families -- both on Wall Street and on Main Street -- and on the city's economy as a whole.

"I'm particularly concerned about the many employees of Bear Stearns and their families and the ripple effect through the economy that this is going to cause," the senator told reporters.

She did not directly answer questions about what she would do to help shore up the falling dollar or whether the Fed had done enough.

"Clearly, the consequences of inaction were deemed to be much more difficult for the economy than having the Fed step in. The extension of the $30 billion of backstopping JP Morgan Chase is a big commitment on the part of the Fed, but clearly they have the resources to make that commitment. I think that from what I have been told the worry was that there would have been a chain reaction that would have quickly required much more significant resources, so I'm not going to second-guess the Fed either on their movement to get the sale consummated and to back up the JP Morgan commitment or to cut the discount rate," she said, calling this a "really serious piece of business" for the Fed to take this action.

Clinton repeated her call for more urgency to deal with the mortgage crisis as a way of dealing with the credit crisis and said she would do whatever necessary in the Senate to help get the economic situation under control.

"When I first called for a lot of these steps, I was ridiculed by the Bush Administration and frankly my Democratic opponent," she said. "Now we are in the soup and we better get ourselves out of it before the consequences are drastic. There are lots of people who are talking about using tools we haven't used since the Great Depression -- legal tools that give the government the right to do certain things. You know, I haven't looked at the legal background, but some say that even the Fed's unprecedented intervention has roots in what was necessary then. I mean, I cannot stress to you we are in a very dangerous period in the economy. We need vigilance and we need leadership and we've gotta get it from, you know, this Administration."

Well First Read, when McCain and either Obama or Hillary are paired together and the nominating process is over, the real battle begins. Each nominee will be tearing down at one another. Now, the problem is that if Hillary challenges McCain on Iraq, he'll remind her that she also voted for the war; if she goes after him on national security, he'll have an easier time on this and will get her to be specific, and if he finds untruths in what she says, he'll portray her as a liar; and if she attacks his background, he will unleash all of her scandals and lies and hugely scare up votes, particularly from conservatives and independent. Hillary may be able to beat him on the economy and possibly health care, but McCain's dig into her past will come to haunt her and delvier her an embarrassing defeat.
On the other hand, there is little McCain can dig up to attack Obama. He can talk about Rekzo, but Obama will bring up the issue of his relationship with lobbyists, demonstrating McCain's hypocrisy on ethics. If McCain goes against Obama on national security, Obama will remind him of the mess he and Hillary helped create in Iraq (and remind him of how the war helped spawn a new terrorist group, al-Qaida in Iraq that never appeared before the war started, and the facts that WMD inspectors found no evidence of any weapons of mass destruction in Iraq). And if McCain tries to attack Obama on the economy, Obama will remind him of what he said (that the economics is something he is not very familiar with).
So, you can see it is easier for McCain to handle and defeat Hillary. In fact, he even mentioned that he desires to have Hillary as his opponent. The Republicans are better prepared to attack Hillary and motivate GOP voters into turning out in large numbers to reject another Clinton presidency, recalling the Bill presidency.
"People turn to counselors, ministers, psychiatrists and spiritual advisers in times of despair, often not thinking or realizing that these people have complicated lives as well.

The very same issue came up with Bill and Hillary Clinton after the Monica Lewinsky scandal. Chelsea Clinton called Jesse Jackson and asked him to come give spiritual guidance to the family. He ultimately became the Clinton family’s spiritual adviser, ministering to Hillary, Bill and Chelsea, and at Hillary’s urging developed a special counseling relationship with their daughter. Shortly after the Lewinsky story broke Jackson met with the three Clintons at the White House. They reportedly prayed and hugged one another under Jackson’s spiritual guidance.

The night before Bill Clinton was to testify before the grand jury about Monica Lewinsky, the president called Jackson and asked him to come watch the Super Bowl with him. At first Jackson begged off, citing a previous engagement, then heeded his wife’s advice. According to Jackson “My wife said, ‘your first obligation is ministerial. It is morally right.'” And he was later quoted as saying that “The relationship between a prophet and a president, the priest and the president is a sacred one.” Jackson gave Hillary Clinton a framed photograph of himself with Chelsea, which Hillary Clinton hung in her bedroom.

The Clintons did not repudiate Jackson for his earlier comments about Jews, calling them “Hymie’s” and referring to New York as “Hymietown.” Nor did they repudiate him for recognizing the PLO or Yasser Arafat, or for embracing Arafat and Syrian Preisdent Hafez Assad, or for accepting Arab money for two of his organizations. (In fact, Hillary Clinton was roundly criticized by her New York constituents for embracing Arafat’s wife at a meeting.)

Later it was revealed that while Jesse Jackson was acting as the Clinton’s spiritual adviser during this troubled time, he was having an affair with a California State University professor Karin Stanford, a former staffer, and fathered her child. According to Stanford, Jackson tried to keep it quiet by asking her to sign a confidentiality agreement and by paying money to her from his charity organizations, hardly visiting the child at all. “An angry Stanford remarked later that “black religious leaders and congregations prayed for him (Jackson) and his ‘family’ but not for our daughter (Ashley) and me.” She then said, “Coming at a time when (former) President Bill Clinton was being crucified for lying about his affair with a White House intern, my partner was praised by the media for his honesty.”

I’m sure Hillary Clinton does not support Jackson’s remarks about Jews, his relationship with the PLO or his having a child by a woman other than his wife. But clearly he was able to help her at a time, as she has admitted, of the greatest crisis of her life.

This is all by way of saying that one can get solace and support from others who are mortal and human and who make mistakes like everyone else. One can repudiate their behavior but not the people themselves."

I'm a little confused Hilery.  When you say "When I first called for these steps, I was ridiculed by the Bush Administration and frankly my Democratic opponent", When Exactly was this.  What are you talking about.  When Exactly did you(Hilery) call for "these steps" and exactly what are "These Steps" you are refering to.
Also, it appears to me, out of respect for the office it should be "President Bush".  Maybe the lack of respect you show others is the reason that so many of our your people are refering to you as "Hil-Bill-Y".
You will soon learn "You Reap What You Sow"
Do not remember bad times like these under the Clintons. LETS BRING THEM BACK !!!!!

GO HILLIARY in 08 and THEN 12
Barack Obama and pastor Wright, joined at the hip!

The Audacity To Hope that voters overlook the record of Barack Obama!!!

These times call for pro-active solutions. Hillary will meet this head on. I believe that, as with most things, Obama will be reactive and passive. I feel his Presidency would be the Carter era revisited. Going forward we need an ambitious and comprehensive plan to get us out of this mess and I just don't see anyone but Hillary doing that.
She's completely out of touch, or not and just lying about it.
What a bunch of useless rehetoric.  Just like her canidancy will be, all talk, no action.  Everyone knows we are in trouble because of the drain from the Iraq war that she voted for and continued to support with more and more funds.  She has a responsibility in what her actions and Bush's actions have done to this economy.  She supported and voted with Bush

Obama 08
Senator Obama on the State of the Economy
Monday, March 17, 2008

quote:
The news coming from Wall Street today has confirmed our fears that the financial fallout from the mortgage crisis would spillover into the wider economy.  Months ago, I went to Wall Street and said that our capital markets could not function without the confidence and trust of the public.  I said that Wall Street could not succeed while the rest of America struggled.  Now, as the Federal Reserve does its best to bring stability to the market, we must focus on what we can do to restore the public’s confidence in the market and help the millions of Americans who are worried about their jobs, their homes, and their financial future.

History will not judge President Bush kindly for his failure to act in a way that could’ve prevented or alleviated this economic crisis.  There have been few Administrations so out of touch with the concerns and the struggles of working Americans and so beholden to the lobbyists and special interests who blocked any kind of regulatory oversight of the financial sector.  Whether it was subprime lending, credit cards, or bankruptcy laws, Washington has allowed these special interests to prevent sensible policy that could have prevented the most serious effects of the current predicament.

Nowhere has the failure been more pronounced than the President’s refusal to address the plight of homeowners and Main Street businesses that lie at the heart of the turmoil right now.  After months of inaction and half-measures, the President traveled to New York last week to say that there is a danger in doing too much and implied that doing nothing would be preferable.  His principle policy to address the financial crunch that now threatens millions of Americans with foreclosure and thousands of business with bankruptcy is to extend his tax cuts for the wealthiest few.  It’s a policy so divorced from the reality facing the American people and the American economy that it would be laughable if it weren’t so frightening.

At this moment, we must come together and act to address the housing crisis that set this downturn in motion and continues to eat away at the public’s confidence in the market.  We should pass the legislation I put forward with my colleague, Chris Dodd, to create meaningful incentives for lenders to buy or refinance existing mortgages so that Americans facing foreclosure can keep their homes.  This is not a bailout for lenders or investors who gambled recklessly, and it is not a windfall for borrowers.  It is a fair and responsible way to help stem the foreclosure crisis.

Many other steps will be required to reverse this downturn in the weeks to come.  It will require the efforts of those in the financial community; of the Federal Reserve; of Congress, and the White House.  And it will also require a renewed confidence that we can meet this challenge.  We are the United States of America, and each time we have faced moments of adversity in the past – some much greater than this – we have summoned a spirit of cooperation and innovation to emerge stronger and more prosperous than we were before.  But it will take work, it will take time, and it will take leadership that recognizes that we are all part of the same economy, and that economy must work for every American in order for America to prosper in the 21st century.
Financial advice from Hillary?
Had to lend herself a 5 mill. bailout for overspending during her campain.
Can't get her tax returns togeather or there is something in there that's a little strange.
Posturing.
The GOP got an early Christmas present last week - Lying Obama and his pastor Rev. Wright.

Of course Barack didn't know about any of the beliefs held by Rev. Wright:

the pastor of the church he's attended for 20 years

the pastor who conducted his wedding ceremony

the pastor who blessed his (and Resko's) house

the pastor who baptized both his daughters

the pastor who he prayed with the night before he announced for President and:

the pastor he had to disinvite to his Pres. announcement because HE KNEW of those divisive and racist statements.

Yes - the GOP is loving all of this.  They can't wait to run against Obama now.  Can you imagine the commercials that could be produced!

Why should she bother?  Bush says he's on top of the situation.  Prosperity is right around the corner.
Once again, she is leading will real substance and an understanding on how to really lead in challenging times. This women is brilliant and if it weren't for people trying to paint her as something that she isn't she would be our nominee today.

Ha Ha Ha.

Please, point out ANYTHING in what she said that was specific and "leading with substance"?   You can't.  She has NO specific plans.  Just vague run-at-the-mouth rhetoric that has zero substance and specifics.

"I think that from what I have been told the worry was that there would have been a chain reaction that would have quickly required much more significant resources, so I'm not going to second-guess the Fed either "

"You know, I haven't looked at the legal background, but some say that even the Fed's unprecedented intervention has roots in what was necessary then."

She has NO CLUE.  Just like she wants a "time out on trade"  (the most laughable idea ever) so she can "review Nafta"

Give me a break.  She is ZERO substance and specifics, and has flip flopped on so many statements that even the few instances resembling specifics are nothing but pandering based on the polls of the moment/location.
I see the negative Repulicans and the Obama supporters are out in droves today. Clinton's call for economic measures and proposed actions (pulling Congress back from a Holiday to do some work) are much more productive than anything I've seen from McCain or Obama. Deflecting away from the negatives of your own candidate to denigrate another via personal attacks does nothing to boost your candidate's standing. Our economy is in trouble and as far as I can see, Hillary Clinton is the only candidate ready and able to address the tough decisions that need to be made. She is now and has always been the best candidate running for President in 2008.
Hillary needs to start speaking about HER Earmarks, HER Tax Returns, HER Peter Paul lawsuit, HER not winning Texas and Ohio by a large margin and still not conceding, HER LYING about her foreign policy experience, how she robbed those elderly folks in her White Water scam,  and I am sure we all want to know how she turned $1,000 into $100,000 in one year, in the stock market.

Interesting...seems we have another one.  I have been gone for sometime.  Wonder how long this has been going on.

That said I don't necessarily disagree with anything that you have said
WHY would I listen to anything Hillary Clinton has to say regarding the economy -- she couldn't even manage her own campaign's finances!!!

Obama 08
Clinton won in Texas because the Lationos got rich in Texas by Clinton's Nafta policy. NO wonder they like her at the expense of the rest of the country. Nafta is not working in America and is taking jobs away from middle class America. I have to walk out of the room when I see her face anymore. Let's give Obama a chance. Our paper the Kansas City Star had a cartoon of John McCain saying that he did not know that Hillary wanted to be his vice presidential candadate. Hillary go home  and leave this country alone.
Remember when the economy was so good in the mid 90's?  That was based on the successful policies of Hillary Clinton.  Remember when the dot-com bubble burst in the late 90's and our economy started to tank?  That was Bill's fault.

I don't understand why any of my fellow Americans would ever want another President who isn't ever willing to admit mistakes, ala GW Bush.
Wow . . . so very bitter these blogs have become

either way Dems are toast in November

simply amazing how quickly the Repubs were able to upset the applecart by sedning in their troops to vote Clinton and give her failing campaign enough of a glimmer of hope to do the dirty work for the Repubs

Makes me sick . . . Dems have been played by the masters of deceipt (again)
How can Obama unite the country when he lives in a world of divide in his church?  His pastor said, barack is underpriveleged, not white etc..  Hillary has never been called a N,...  I guess barack has?  That makes him qualified?  Too many questions about Barack.  So many words with no action.  Voted to fund 300 billion dollars for a war he was against?  Voted against timelines for troop withdrawel?  How can he be running on an anti-war speech but when he had the ability to stand up for himself he did not?
OK- I believe Obama when he says he was never in the pews when his pastor was spewing this hate-mongering.

My question-  Do I want a President of the United States of America who does not know what is going on in the church that he has been a part of for 20 years?

I think we need someone with a little more intuition.
Barack Obama for the win! :)

Obama '08
The super-delegates will smarten up and go with the candidate who has the best chance to win.  Hillary.  (this night not get posted on the Obama network)

Bo lack of judgement will see to it that the Supers pick Hillary.
You were wright Barrack,
Words matter and just words are all you have now.  Do not grab on to them, they will not support you, you are going DOWN!

America, there is no need to worry about the economy, Bush is on top of it! He was on top of the war too.
The American economy has a great influence on world economy. Being a European I really believe that Hillary Clinton is more qualified to handle the present recession than Barack Obama.
Here is a simple plan to rebuild the sagging U.S. economy.

In the 1950's Eisenhower instituted the public works program and built the interestate highways.

What the U.S. should do is add one lane of highway in each direction on all the interstates and rebuild all the old bridges and other infrastructures.

That would create jobs directly and indirectly.
You would be using American Steel, American Concrete and American Asphalt.

The direct impact is on the highways and bridges.  The indirect impact is on the local communities who will be gaining from this as the workers have to buy goods and services.

In this respect every wins.

This is a win - win situation.
As always, Hillary has a plan on how to go about solving one of America's worst economical problem and the politically blinded people don't want to see it or even recognize it.  I am wondering why Obama has NOT said anything about it yet.? I hope he is not too busy copying some of his good pastor Wright's old lines to prepare another inspirational speech and solve this problem.

I have always said Senator Obama does NOT convince me. He is a fake one, when he said to be a unifier. After these recent events,  he has proven to me to be one more dirty politician, who is taking advantage of the pride of many African-Americans families for his own political ambitions.  He cannot defend his own record without attacking or diminishing Senator Clinton's record. Which is by far a lot more extensive than his, not just by time of service, but in substance and real experience with national & international issues.
Enrique in Chicago,
You're SPOT ON.  I sometimes wonder if anyone else sees it.  It's such a predictable pattern in her answers.  No matter WHAT the question, her answer is "platitude, platitude...and then...slam Barack with some spin Mark Penn gave her that morning."
Why are most of the posts in First Read about Democrats?

Bush is in the news today...Why the focus on the Dem primary candidates only. Can McCain get a free ride without media cooperation? NOOOOO!!!

'08 needs better coverage
