First thoughts: Obama's big speech

From Chuck Todd and Mark Murray
*** Obama’s big speech: The last time a top presidential candidate gave an important speech on a sensitive topic was last December, when Mitt Romney talked about American faith. His speech drew favorable reviews, but he didn’t talk much about his own Mormon faith, an issue that ultimately hurt his campaign (evidenced by polls and even the rise of Mike Huckabee). After a week dominated by race -- whether Geraldine Ferraro’s remarks or those by Rev. Jeremiah Wright -- Obama will give a speech on the subject in Philadelphia at 10:15 am ET. Unlike what Romney did, Obama will address the controversy facing him head on. “He'll discuss the controversy surrounding the offensive remarks made by Reverend Wright, but also why they were so contrary to the purpose of his candidacy, which is based on the recognition that there is far more that unites us than divides us," an Obama aide emails First Read. If Obama can't hit a homerun on this speech today, then he won’t be president. This is in his wheelhouse; it's what has motivated him for the beginning. As he told PBS’ Gwen Ifill yesterday, noting he comes from a white mother and a black father: “It’s in my DNA to believe that all of us have something fundamental in common.”

VIDEO: NBC Political Director Chuck Todd offers his first read on Democratic hopeful Barack Obama's speech addressing race in America.

*** The damage report: Yet it also seems that the controversy surrounding Wright and his remarks has hurt Obama -- so far. A new USA Today/Gallup poll shows Clinton outperforming Obama when matched up against McCain -- something that hasn’t happened often in the past several weeks. In the poll, Clinton is ahead of McCain by five points nationally (51%-46%), while Obama leads him by two (49%-47%). That said, a new CNN poll conducted as Wright’s comments saturated the TV networks shows Obama up by seven points over Clinton nationally (52%-45%). Obama’s speech today has the potential to bookend this Wright controversy, at least in the short term.

*** Let’s talk about race, baby… Let’s talk about you and me: Speaking of race, did anybody else catch Bill Clinton calling the interpretation of his comparison of Obama to Jesse Jackson a “total myth and a mugging”? Should he really have used the term "mugging"? Clearly, the former president believes he was wronged in how he was criticized, even as members of Clinton's campaign have all but admitted he stepped over the line in his remarks about Obama. Just askin’: If Obama is being compelled to give a speech about his race, and Romney felt forced to give one about his faith, will Hillary Clinton ever have to give a speech about her husband? Has this campaign shown that it is better to address the elephant in the room, or leave it alone? If Clinton becomes the Democratic nominee, the GOP and the press will likely force her to give one about his role at some point. Months ago, many Clinton partisans said she wouldn't need to until the general. That's probably still the case.

*** Hoosier daddy: Today, Bill Clinton campaigns in Indiana, a sign that the Clinton campaign has picked its next "do or die" state after Pennsylvania. It won't be North Carolina, but Indiana -- a state Obama plans to campaign in vigorously, too. In fact, an argument can be made that PA and NC will cancel each other out, and the real test will be the Hoosier State. Meanwhile, Hillary Clinton also has Indiana on her schedule this week, as well as West Virginia, a state that comes later in the May calendar. How soon before Obama heads to Oregon? The ballots will go out relatively soon, no?

*** Just askin’ II: If Edwards were to endorse Clinton wouldn’t this be the week to do it -- when Obama’s support among whites is taking a hit?

*** The Florida and Michigan soap operas: Ok, so now with a Florida re-vote dead, all eyes are on Michigan. The legislation is written, but lawmakers in Michigan apparently want sign-off from the campaigns and there's clearly a hesitance from Team Obama. The Clinton folks believe they have Obama in a box on this one, and it's possible Obama's current tenuous political situation re: Wright makes it even harder for him to find a reason to come out against the new plan. Some Obama partisans are apparently unhappy that independents who might have voted in the original Dem primary -- but decided to vote in the GOP primary in Michigan -- won't have a chance to vote in this new primary (and because it also violates DNC rules to have folks vote in a GOP primary AND a Dem primary). Is that an argument that will hold up? Whatever happens, it has to happen this week in Michigan because the state legislature leaves for a two-week recess beginning Friday.

*** The buck stops where? Why hasn't Bush addressed the country on the economy? Sure, there are a bunch of elected Republican members of Congress and a certain GOP presidential nominee who would fear Bush doing that and putting a GOP brand on this economic downturn, but isn't this one of those leadership moments when the country wants to understand better what he thinks government can do about the economy? Even when it seems the country doesn't really listen to Bush anymore during these speeches (notice the lack of poll bumps he gets after national addresses), this does seem like one of those times he should at least try.

*** On the trail: Elsewhere today, Clinton campaigns in Pennsylvania and McCain remains overseas. Also, the liberal Take Back America conference in DC continues, with (among other things) a discussion on MLK and the civil-rights movement.

Let there be no doubt, today is a media day.  Across the spectrum of Obama supporters and detractors, the media is hyping his speech today as his make or break moment.  I totally disagree, but how can I stop it?  I foresee a frenzy of people who will use this as the moment he backtracks.  I want my Obama back, no more distractions, fired-up, ready to go, and inspirational again!

I would also like to point out that the ‘Wicked Witch’ has done it once again.  Yesterday she claimed that she had a concrete plan for Iraq and her opponent did not.  Yet, in a brief moment right after that, the Witch said she would gather her advisors and come up with a plan in the first 60 days of office.  For one, I thought she said she was ready on Day one…LIAR.  She doesn’t have a concrete plan for anything!!!  Wake up you Witch wannabe’s, she lies and you buy it each and every day.
SHOULD YOU REALLY USE THE WORD MUGGING?????? WHY are you emphazing such a word in such a context, are you a racist?  See how easy it is to be accused of this crap!
YOU seem to be race baiting again FR!
OUR VOTES WILL BE COUNTED AND "ALL" OUR DELEGATED MUST BE SEATED AT DEMOCRATIC NATIONAL CONVENTION. THE UNITED STATES CONSTITUTION 14TH. AMENDMENT:NO STATES SHALL DENY TO ANY PERSON WITHIN IT'S JURISDICTION THE "EQUAL" PROTECTION OF THE LAWS.
Senator Obama is expected to raise the bar from the talk that has been taken place across America since last week.  He is going to have to convince people that he does not share the Reverend’s views.  He is going to fail I’m afraid. Why? Because he is going to be speaking to white racists, who will never, ever be pleased with what he has to say. People in this country do not listen to themselves when they speak. That is unfortunate. Because if they took a minute to be honest, they would know that they are using the Reverend to bring down Senator Obama.

How is it possible to throw away a good candidate for one {Clinton}who never took the time to think about what the Bush Administration was doing.  And now 4,000 Americans have lost their lives. This isn’t about putting together a Health Care package. This is about thousands of people dying.

Yet people in this country are more afraid of the Reverend than they are of Hillary Clinton’s judgment.

This country will never change as long as we have Sean Hannity, Bill Kristol and their like on the air waves. They are despicable people.

Where is the educated, sophisticated media in this country who will have the courage to speak up? Well, there’s Keith Olbermann and Rachael Maddow. Anyone else?

No. We’re back to square one. And people in this country are allowing this to happen. Again.
"If Obama can't hit a homerun on this speech today, then he won’t be president." This is a bit of an overstatement, don't you think?
It is fascinating to note some people urging others not to listen to Obama.

When people actually listen to Obama, the vast majority realize he is exactly the person we need for president. That is why his support in a state increases so dramatically when he begins campaigning in a state. Of course, there are always people with hidden agendas or special interests, but that is nothing new.

To heal America's wounds, which are now severe, it will take someone extraordinary. That person is Barack Obama.
Obama is toast.  The witch is all about putting a spell on one and all.  BO just smells and only the witch can stand the stink long enough to win.
Chuck in NY your lying joke of an abombanation can just slink off, he is done baby!
This should be interesting however, what will Sen. Obama say when things start to unfold with
William Ayers and the true extent of his involvement with Tony Resko (17 years)?

What then?
Is THIS what we want ?
A coup by a power hungry hack ?
A power grab by a soul-less crook ?
Hillary can't win by honest means....
.... she can only CHEAT !!

From DailyKOS:

'...First of all, the only path to victory for Clinton
is via coup by super delegate.

She knows this. That's why there's all the talk about
poaching pledged delegates and spinning uncertainty
around Michigan and Florida, and laying the case for
super delegates to discard the popular will and stage
a coup.

Yet a coup by super delegate would sunder the party in
civil war.

Clinton knows this, it's her only path to victory, and
she doesn't care. She is willing -- nay, eager to
split the party apart in her mad pursuit of power....'

It's pretty clear that Clinton CAN'T WIN by legitimate means

She can't catch up in pledged delegates

Her only hope is to win by breaking the rules

Why let her ?

End this farce !!
I remember a year ago. Democrats believed we could turn the page on a bad chapter in American history. We could show the country a fundamental difference in how this party governs from republicans. I remember and then I watch this.

A frontrunner in every sense of the word is reduced to defending a minister or denouncing/rejecting him. Really? How about this, could it be that this is another group that Obama hopes to unite under one banner. The USA.

The RNC doesn't apologize from the "fringe" ministers, they seek campaign endorsements and contributions from them! How can this A.D.D country let McCain get endorsments from the same ministers HE DENOUNCED?! Let McCain denounce reject and whatnot some more. Or maybe we can talk about something more significant. Like what made us look forward to this election to begin with.
"If Obama can't hit a homerun on this speech today, then he won’t be president."

That is total BS.  The media has blown this out of proportion but the next time we have a REALLY major story like the death of Anna Nicole Smith, the media will drop this like a hot potato.  How about you guys start hitting up McCain on his incendiary supporters or actually have the stones to ask Clinton about her earmark requests, her tax returns, her "presidential" papers, her ties to Rezko and Hsu, her inflation of her "experience" resume, who exactly funded the Clinton library, etc, etc, etc.
'...African-American diarists at the site that have
pointed out the many times when the Clinton bloggers
have used nasty racial code in their diaries...'

Sound familiar ?
racial code by the Clintonistas ?

'...right after Clinton money-bundler Norman Hsu had
been arrested and brought to jail – when “Alegre”
began hijacking various diaries there insisting that
in the name of the fallen of 9/11 there should be no
criticism of candidates on that day. That transparent
effort to censor bad news about her candidate betrays
her current claim of somehow being “censored.”...'

From DailyKOS:

'...Some Clinton supporters looked at the big numbers
Kos gets – a million visits a day! – and went there
advocating their candidate. At first – when Edwards
was the most popular candidate there – they tried very
hard to stoke disagreements between Edwards and Obama
supporters (the Clinton bloggers accurately saw Obama
as their horse’s real obstacle to the inevitable
nomination). The bombastic way they went about it only
ended up helping guide Edwards supporters to support
Obama once Edwards was out of the race.

Some of the crap they pulled was downright comedic.
There was a blogger by the handle of “BerkeleyVox”
that each day posted a diary with the Rasmussen daily
tracking poll numbers (showing Clinton twenty points
ahead or so)....'

Does this sound like silly little vanreuter and his
'Truth Pack' ?
All his pompous postings...
All his national polls ......
Until Iowa !!

Where are you van ?

Too chicken sh*t to admit your candidate has lost ?

Poor little pompous van.....
Don't be a stranger....

'...The point of that, other than to shout “she’s
inevitable!”, was lost on me. Of course, when the
tracking poll narrowed and then flipped, he stopped
posting those silly diaries.

The blogger “Alegre” had a kind of Tiger Beat fawning
fan club tone to her posts (if anyone ever wrote so
tirelessly and unconditionally highly of me, I’d worry
that it was a stalker). One of the funniest moments of
that saga came last September 11 – right after Clinton
money-bundler Norman Hsu had been arrested and brought
to jail – when “Alegre” began hijacking various
diaries there insisting that in the name of the fallen
of 9/11 there should be no criticism of candidates on
that day. That transparent effort to censor bad news
about her candidate betrays her current claim of
somehow being “censored.” In fact, Kos never censored
her or her compatriots at all. Nor did he censor their
critics, the sharpest of which have been former
Edwards supporters and a (first-time-ever on DKos)
influx of African-American diarists at the site that
have pointed out the many times when the Clinton
bloggers have used nasty racial code in their
diaries....'
Do you have any solid evidence that Edwards plans to endorse Clinton over Obama?

Most sources expect Edwards to endorse Obama.
###RALLY ALERT### "Count our Votes" Rally ,with Congresswomen Debbie Wasserman Schultz, "today" Tuesday March 18th., 11:30 A.M.,Riverside Hotel,620 E.Las Olas Blvd.,Fort Lauderdale,Fl. 33301
What makes people so high-and-mighty to condemn a man based on a few thirty second sound bites? Wright has amassed a great career helping people and fighting for social justice. He just so happens to be a relic of that fight.

What's more, what makes people so high-and-mighty to condemn Obama on a few 30 second sound bited of what someone else said?

This is probably the most ridiculous controversy I've ever witnessed.
On another network last night, they took an online poll during the program. 8000 people voted in less than an hour. 72% said Obama cannot say anything to correct his Wright problem, that it's political suicide. 12% said he's said enough.

Typical of FR to enter your comment "should you use the word mugging". You just add to the problem. As far as Bill Clinton's comment in SC re Jackson and Obama, it was taken out of context. Clinton is an astute student of politics. He noted that Jackson won in SC in 84 and 88 but didn't get the nomination. He also said Jackson ran a good campaign and so had Obama. So where was the racist part of that comment?  It was a fact. It's too bad, I guess, that he didn't pick some "white" candidate for his example. The "PC Police" are keeping a flame under the fire of racism. If people can't discuss it, then your stifling the issue.
A VERY SMART MOVE BY OBAMA:

You guys in the press have made so much of this story. You have actually killed the story with your over-detailed he said, she said reporting none of which can be proven or disproven reagrding Obama's personal beliefs. And what matters now after you have beaten this story to death is what does Obama believe regardless of Wright's comments. And Obama is very wisely taking this opportunity, gaining the limelight away from everyone else, to speak directly to the American people (as if he were already President). And he will give a speech that that encourages unity and harmony. You people in the press will eat it up and report that Obama did well or even hit a home run. After this speech, in a day or two, watch for some additional non-committed superdeleagtes to jump on Obama's bandwagon. They will use this uplifting speech that Obama will be delivering today as the opportunity to throw their support behind him. Watch and see.

Now, although a mote point as Obama has this nomination wrapped, how about those tax returns of Hillarys?
"If Edwards were to endorse Clinton wouldn’t this be the week to do it -- when Obama’s support among whites is taking a hit?"

If Edwards endorses Clinton, I will lose all respect for him.  She has taken a ton of money from drug companies and health-related companies - the very thing he railed against.  If he endorses her, he will show himself to be no better than any of the others.
The campaign of the Monster is going to get even more negative. You can bet they've engineered everything so far and, just before the next primary, I'm sure we will be the recipients of another timed releases.

Bubba can’t help it can he? Why didn’t he just complain the Obama campaign should have been lynched for perpetrating that mugging?

MSNBC: Could you please tell me why Jonathan Capehart isn't presented as Hillary's water carrier? The man absolutely revels in Obama's misery.
HP Boston: Good to see even the Hillary supporters are incensed over Bill's own words.
adam/Brooklyn New York City (Sent Tuesday, March 18, 2008 9:29 AM)

Adam, well said!

Did I mention that I'm an anti-Semite and a supporter of the anti-American Hugo Chavez?  I must be because I like the Lethal Weapon movies and I haven't denounced or rejected Mel Gibson and Danny Glover yet.
Pat, Boston, MA: '...  He is going to have to convince people that he does not share the Reverend’s views.  He is going to fail I’m afraid...'

Don't be afraid, Pat
Obama won't fail
Everything we've seen from Obama points to a decent, honest man
Everything we've seen from Obama points to an intelligent, smart politician
I think that will come through

Give Americans more credit than that, Pat
I really think America is waiting for, hungering for someone who can lead us and bring us together

We've got that in Obama

Obama '08
Character counts
Integrity counts

YES WE CAN
Boy you guys sure try hard for Obama.pick the polls suit you put Pres. Clinton down.man no bias here.Any way to me this speech means diddley. He wouldnt take questions from press but will give speech. His writers will give him what he needs to tell everyone about how he feels what he knew. His wife is going to be there I hope he doesnt let her speak so she can defend there pastor and she can tell us how bad this country is. We know where that came from anyway. Will he tell us about the window opening light pouring out and angels singing we will get an epathany and we will all believe him like he did in Iowa.I hear there are more tapes. They will be after his speech and than he can use that silver tongue again. I would have believed him more had he taken questions instead of relieing on writers.
When will Joe Scarborough and his ilk start playing soundbites of the Republicans' favorite ministers, Robertson, Falwell, Hagee and the rest?  They have said a lot of similar things.

Having said that:  there is no excuse for racism from any race.  None.  Especially from Christian Ministers.
Question - if the Florida Democrats killed any chance of re-vote in that state, does this mean that the DNC can decide to honor the results of the January primary, and seat the delegates based on those results? If so, no a single Obamabot can complain.  Unlike in Michigan, Obama was on the ballot in that state. And despite the rules against campaigning in that state, he did just that by skirting around the rule and airing campaign ads on TV stations in neighboring areas he knew also served Florida areas.  Therefore, should the DNC forgive Florida for breaking the rules, which it should since the Florida democratic primary was held in a such a manner because of the republicans who control that state's gov't, then we should just accept it, and move on.
Obama is in a box, and his candidacy is in the balance. In fact, it is nearly over. What he will attempt to to with his speech today is to convince all of us that he didn't know what was going on in his church of 20+ years, and he had no idea of the racist and separatists views of both his pastor and his church. This from a man that says he has better judgment then Clinton, Edwards, or Bush. How he could know what was going on in his very own church appears to be a lie of epic proportions. The words used in Pastor Wrights church, and by Pastor Wright are no different then those used in militant mosques that are stirring up American hatred and recruiting for terrorist organizations. There is nothing taken out of context that can defend what Pastor Wright said, and what Barack Obama had to have know about. It is going to be very difficult for Obama to explain how he is not associated with Pastor Wright and his preachings since Obama is on record saying that Wright is his mentor.
BEFORE THEY SEND OBAMA TO THE DOGS PEOPLE BETTER READ TODAYS HUFFINGTON REPORT. THERE IS A REPORT ABOUT A MAN NAME FRANCIS SCHEAFER WHO WAS A REPUBLICAN WHO SAID ALOT WORSE THINGS THAT OBAMA AND REV. WRIGHT EVER THOUGHT OF SAYING

HE AT ONE POINT CALL AMERICANS HITLERS PEOPLE, COMPAIRED TO WRIGHTS STATEMENTS THAT IS BY FAR WORSE. REAGAN, FORD AND EVEN BUSH SR WERE ALL BUDDIES WITH THAT MAN AND HIS SON TALKS ABOUT HOW BAD HIS DAD WAS AND WAS UPSET WITH THE NASTY REPORTS ABOUT HOW BAD HIS DAD WAS

SO BEFORE THE REPUBLICANS AND THE CLINTONS SAY TOO MUCH AGAINST LOOK UP FRANCIS SCHEAFER AND READ ABOUT HIS STATEMENTS ABOUT THE AMERICAN PEOPLE.

THE MAN TALKED ABOUT BLACKS, GAYS, AND A WHOLE LOT MORE AND WAS THE REPUBLICANS SHINNING LIGHT AND GLORY BOY

AND FOR THE CLINTONS PEOPLE SHOULD LOOK UP THE VIDEO ABOUT CLINTONS LIES ABOUT A MAN NAME PETER DAVIS. BECAUSE IT SHOWS WHAT CROOKS THEY ARE..

SO SHE CAN PUT ON THAT FAKE SMILE AND STABE YOU IN THE BACK WITH THE SAME BREATH. IT SHOW HER TALKING ABOUT THE 1.2 ;MILLLION DOLLARS THEY NEVER REPORTED TO THE GOVERNMENT ON CONTRABUTIONS HE MADE TO HER AND HER HUSBAND IN 2000 IT MIGHT WAKE UP A FEW PEOPLE AND THE GOVERNMENT SHOULLD LOOK INTO THEIR LIES ABOUT
CAMPAIGN MONEY THEY DONT REPORT.
NOT TO WORRY OBAMA SUPPORTERS

Although agreed Obama does not have to hit what is called a home run in his speech he will hit a home run. Why? What else is the press going to report after someone speaks about unity and harmony and encourages everyone to get along? That he failed to hit a home run, lol. I don't think so. The press will be lavishing praise on Obama after the speech. If the press can say that Romney (who gives boring and emotionaless speeches) gave a decent speech when he addressed his Mormon religion what the heck do you think they will say about Obama's speech. He'll knock them right out of their seats, lol. Watch and see.

And like I have stated. This speech will draw a few more superdelegates to come out and support Obama in a day or two. Watch and see.
Just a "reminder", "Count our Votes" Rally with Congresswomen Debbie Wasserman Schultz, "today" Tuesday March 18th. 11:30 A.M.,Riverside Hotel,620 E.Las Olas Blvd. ,Fort Lauderdale,Florida 33301.
It is interesting how so many Obama supporters want to blame Clinton for Obama's lack of judgement in remaining tied to Rev. Wright for 20 years.  Since Mr. Obama very readily critizes the judgement of Ms. Clinton, let us all look at his lack of judgement and his political manipulation of a variety of bad judgements he has used over the years.  The list is too long to go into here but we have heard at least 3 different stories from Obama regarding his association with Rezko, his propensity to avoid taking a stand and voting on important issues (130 present votes in IL and missing 40% of votes in US Senate, the removal from circulation of Michelle's Princeton thesis (not exactly the transparent action of someone stating that Ms. Clinton is hiding something by not releasing her tax returns) and now Rev. Wright.  Mr. Obama, you are a huckster.
Obama is toast.  The witch is all about putting a spell on one and all.  BO just smells and only the witch can stand the stink long enough to win.
Chuck in NY your lying joke of an abombanation can just slink off, he is done baby!
JUST WORDS (Sent Tuesday, March 18, 2008 9:24 AM)

I finaly made my point. Obama movement is nothing but a cult. He is now being smoked out from the hole. Race does matter, there is no speech Mr. Obama can give today that is going to make any difference, he is guilty as charged. All Hillary's haters, I have tissue papers for ya'll to wipe your tears. How are the mighthy falling.
How many of the people on here condemning Obama for the words of another consider themselves Christians?  And yet you continue to cast stones.  That's what I've never understood about so many of the "Christians" out there - so many of them delight in tearing others down.  So much for Love Thy Neighbor, huh?
Ok Chuck, NY

You need some serious therapy. "I want my Obama back."  Your Obama, he belongs to you?  What a freak.  Typical Obama supppoter, they're SO in love with this loser, that they say things like "I want MY Obama back."

Chuck I realize that you and the ohter supporters think that dumbama is YOURS, but he doesn't belong to you nor does he really give a rats a** about you and the other supporters even though you REALLY believe he does.  What a pathetic fool.

BTW, Obama doesn't have any more plans than Clinton does you idiot.  Every expert that has reviewed their so-called plans and their speaches says that they're both practically identical and neither really has any plans that they would't scrap and start from scratch once in office.

Besides, they can only attempt to get certain laws passed and certain plans put into action.  Most of what they CLAIM (including your precious little Obama), they're going to do requires the 2/3 of the Congress agreeing with them to the extent that they pass the laws necessary to support their plans.

Get a Clue.

Despite what you and the other supporters think, Obama just wants to get elected.  That's why he belongs to a church that spews inflamatory hate speach toward whites and the United States of America.

When ANYONE is advised the way Obama has been advised by someone like Rev. Wright for over 20 years, it influences who that person becomes and how they think and see the world.

People like Rev. Wright who cleary have a certain level of hate for the U.S. are entitled to their opinion, but they don't deserve to be alowed to live in this country.

If Rev. Wright and Michelle Obama are so ashamed of the U.S., then they should get the hell out of this country.

I can't wait until November so that I can watch all of the hope that you and the rest of the Obama supporters have bought into is dashed.
So my vote in the Jan. 15 MI GOP primary disqualifies me from voting in the new Dem. primary? Despite the fact that I voted in the GOP primary because it was the only one that mattered for my state, and my Dem. candidate wasn't even on the ballot?

For cryin' out loud, Michigan can't do anything right, except lead the nation in foreclosures. Here's to the incompetence of Carl Levin, Debbie Dingell, and Mark Brewer! This is the kind of thing that makes me want to be a Republican. At least they can run a freakin' election.
BILL CLINTON SPEAK:SHAME ON ALL YOU DEMOCRATICS FOR BELIEVING WHAT YOU HEARD AND SAY AND DO.SHAME ON YOU DEMOCRATICS.
Of course this is a make-or-break moment for Obama.  The media spin has made it no other way.  To date, the MSM has yet to offer the full measure of Rev. Wright and his works.  Pat Buchannan (when will msnbc get rid of him?  He belongs on Fox.  Surely there are conservative journalists who can offer reasoned analysis)compared Rev. Wright to David Duke, who ACTIVELY spent his life participating in anti-black causes.  Where is the evidence that Rev. Wright has spent his life ACTIVELY participating in anti-white causes?  Oh, that's right - there are snippets of inflammatory remarks - that says it all.

Well, it doesn't say it all, and the MSM will not offer other perspectives of Rev. Wright until Obama is ruined. Why is the media so hell bent on showing Rev. Wright as a one-dimensional figure?    Not only does Hillary move the goal posts, but the media has moved Obama's goalpost so that he must throw a 200 yard touchdown or else he 'fails'.

No other candidate in recent memory has been held to such a standard: where was the 'outrage' at the Farwell, et al statements?  The hyprocrisy is outrageous.

The United States Constitution, 14th. Amendment: No states shall deny to "any" person within it's jurisdiction the equal protection of the law. "Period"
Let’s talk about race, baby… Let’s talk about you and me: Speaking of race, did anybody else catch Bill Clinton calling the interpretation of his comparison of Obama to Jesse Jackson a “total myth and a mugging”?
=========

I'm glad I wasn't the only one that caught that.  "Mugging"?!  And in the same breath, he tries to claim he's not race-baiting?  Generally, if you want to avoid race-baiting, you refrain from declaring that a black man "mugged" you.  I mean, that to me is pretty obvious that Bill WAS race-baiting, because that's a reference not many of the working class whites in PA and OH may catch, but it's EXTREMELY apparent to everyone else.  So, I have very little doubt Clinton was doing what the Clintons do best, underhanded deception.  Race-bait under the radar of the people they're trying to convince not to vote for the black guy, and hoping that someone tries to call them out, and then the Clintons play the victim card, and slice up the Democratic party even more.
Dude!  What is wrong with you?  He can't use the word "mugging"?  What planet are you from?  No wonder you people have refused to go after Obama early on.  You are utter crippled by your own guilt and fear of offending.

Meanwhile, Obama is done.  It is his own fault.  If he had waited just a little bit before running someone (probably the Big BC and the Big HRC) would have steered him clear of this OBVIOUS problem.  So, he has been done in by his own ego.  Serves him wright!
C A, I hope you're right.  I'm tired of the double-standard and hypocrisy on this issue.  Maybe Brittany Spears and Madonna will start having a lesbian affair or something similarly earth-shattering so the MSM can scamper off and get some real ratings.  They're running out of sensationalist footage on the political front so they need something really good to make us sick of hearing about.
Spare me the lies that the media is liberal, if that was the case, the war mongers would not have gotten their way. Secondly, the media would not be obsessing about this one narcissistic preacher, which this country has too many(Pat Robertson) involved in politics and demonizing what he said. PEOPLE THE ECONOMY IS IN THE TIOLET! The media is corporate owned and mostly in bed with the GOP who are gleeful now because they have a new Willie Horton. Just listen to the fat druggy Limbaugh repeating the story ad-nauseum and you have what they do so well. Divide and conquer. Laughing all the way to their secret bank accounts in the Caymen Islands while the ignorant masses do their biding for them. MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!
Edwards supporting the candidate who most represents the broken and corrupt apparatus in Washington is exactly what the media wants to try and keep the inevitable from happening, Obama getting the nomination. Edwards has disqualified himself from endorsing Hillary. NEXT.
Is MSNBC going to carry the speech live on its website?
Fortuna from Houston;

FYI, Senator Obama has taken more money from drug companies that Senator Clinton has.  See The Journal of Life Sciences, November 2007.  Clinton received more money from insurance companies but Senator Obama was not far behind.
The coverage of this whole thing is a little over the top, don't you think? Nobody I've talked to seems to be that concerned with the Wright story - except republicans, and who cares what they think.

People seem to instinctively know that no church would survive if all they preached was a diatribe of hatred. Obama doesn't need to explain to me why he's a member of any church. And I find it really insulting that people question why he and his family remain members of the church. He denounced the most inflamatory talk, but he didn't have to. HE does not believe these things. HE does not live these things. But he understands the residual anger among an older generation of African Americans and their right to express it still. I only wish the msm would get a clue.
"As he told PBS’ Gwen Ifill yesterday, noting he comes from a white mother and a black father: “It’s in my DNA to believe that all of us have something fundamental in common.” "

He is correct, there is more that unites us than divides us. It is also correct to observe that because he has a black father and a white mother he has the credibility to stand against the former racial divide in this country. The exact same speech he will soon deliver would not have the same meaning or the same power if delivered from someone with a less unique circumstance - like his oponent.

That is what the original comments were supposed to mean...they unfortunately were taken out of context and spun out of control to the point that we now have a 'King-like' speech coming from the candidate for hope and a vision of change. I see this only uniting many people for Obama. Which goes back to the fact that 'he wouldn't be in this position if he wasn't a black man' - words from Ferrero.
It’s not a speech on unity that we want to hear – its HONEST answers to legitimate questions, like:

You had to disinvite Rev. Wright from making a prayer at your presidential announcement story telling him “he can get a little rough”.  How did you know he would be controversial if you’d never heard his hate filled tirades?

Why would you expose your two young daughters to this separatist?

Why do you belong to a church that holds Louis Farrakhan in high regard?  Do you owe Jewish American’s an explanation?

You are running on “Change” – why didn’t you change your church?

You’re running on “Hope” but your church of 20 years runs on hate.

Go Obama!   We know you'll give a great speech tonight and move on to the nomination in Denver.

Minnesota loves Obama.

Change we can really believe it --

"Mugging" was not a good choice of words by Bill Clinton.  The word plays exactly into the old racial prejudices that we're supposed to be avoiding here, folks.

...but, of course, the Obama campaign can't complain about it because then the passive-aggressive Clinton campaign will just claim, "We're not playing the race card, you're playing the race card for attempting to be offended by the comment!"

As for the Michigan re-vote, talk about a no-win situation for the Obama campaign...

If he doesn't approve the re-vote, the Clinton supporters will crow that he's afraid of losing.

If he approves the re-vote, the Clinton supporters will crow that it's because he "lost" the first vote (even though he honored his pledge and took his name off the ballot).
