Obama addresses America's racial legacy

Posted: Tuesday, March 18, 2008 11:41 AM by Mark Murray

From NBC/NJ's Aswini Anburajan
PHILADELPHIA -- Barack Obama gave a sweeping address on race in this country today, using the statements made by his pastor, Reverend Jeremiah Wright, to reflect broadly on the racial stereotypes and conditions that have polarized the country.

"The fact is that the comments that have been made and the issues that have surfaced over the last few weeks reflect the complexities of race in this country that we've never really worked through -- a part of our union that we have yet to perfect. And if we walk away now, if we simply retreat into our respective corners, we will never be able to come together and solve challenges like health care, or education, or the need to find good jobs for every American."

Obama's speech comes after a week of negative news stories and cable news chatter over Wright's comments. Obama tried to staunch the flow of criticisms through a series of interviews on Friday evening, but the story didn't go away.

In today's speech, Obama did not shy away from addressing the controversy that Wright's comments sparked. "Some will see this as an attempt to justify or excuse comments that are simply inexcusable. I can assure you it is not. I suppose the politically safe thing would be to move on from this episode and just hope that it fades into the woodwork," he said. "We can dismiss Reverend Wright as a crank or a demagogue, just as some have dismissed Geraldine Ferraro, in the aftermath of her recent statements, as harboring some deep-seated racial bias."

Obama reiterated his condemnation of Wright's comments, and acknowledged that he had known and had heard Wright express some of his controversial views. "Did I know him to be an occasionally fierce critic of American domestic and foreign policy? Of course. Did I ever hear him make remarks that could be considered controversial while I sat in church? Yes.  Did I strongly disagree with many of his political views? Absolutely -- just as I'm sure many of you have heard remarks from your pastors, priests, or rabbis with which you strongly disagreed."

But he argued that this only represented a small measure of a man who had done much to bring Obama to Christianity and through his church, The Trinity United Church of Christ, help the poor in Chicago. Obama praised Wright for his service and provided a personal testimony, saying that Wright had never said denigrating remarks about any racial or ethnic group in all their personal conversations.

Obama even compared Wright to his white grandmother, using the two as foils of each other to represent how the legacy of racism has steeped itself into the fabric of who many Americans are. He said that he could no more disown Wright than he could disown the black community, just like he couldn't disown his White grandmother for making racially derogatory comments that have made him "cringe."

"These people are part of me. They are part of America," he said of both.

It was in that reference to his family and his own background that Obama also tried to move the discussion past Wright's comments to insist that his candidacy, as best as it could, was attempting to move beyond race and unite the country in "a more perfect union" -- the title of today's speech.

"It's a story that hasn't made me the most conventional of candidates. But it is a story that has seared into my genetic makeup the idea that this nation is more than the sum of its parts -- that out of many, we are truly one."

He said that Wright's comments disregarded stories like Obama's and didn't acknowledge that the country wasn't "static" and could change.

Obama argued that his candidacy and his message reflected a "hunger" for unity within the country, while also contending that there were a set of racial biases and resentments, carried through America's convoluted racial past, among both black and white that made moving forward difficult.

For African Americans, Obama claimed the path towards unity "means embracing the burdens of our past without becoming victims of our past. It means continuing to insist on a full measure of justice in every aspect of American life."

For whites, he said: "The path to a more perfect union means acknowledging that what ails the African-American community does not just exist in the minds of black people; that the legacy of discrimination -- and current incidents of discrimination, while less overt than in the past -- are real and must be addressed. Not just with words, but with deeds."

Obama ended his speech with the story of an organizer on his campaign who forged a connection with an older black man in South Carolina. It's a story he's told before and from that one connection he claimed lies the potential to forge a larger coalition across the country.

His tone throughout was quiet and thoughtful. The same speech could have been delivered in a fiery tone. But Obama chose one that was quiet and thoughtful. It did little to lessen the impact and may have added to the weight of his words.

A small crowd of fewer than 200 hundred people were present for the speech -- a mix of white and black -- who listened intently and applauded occasionally during Obama's remarks.

Wow I can not believe people can listen to that speech and not take something positive from it. This only proves why he is the superior candidate. We do have an opportunity to FINALLY LOOK PAST RACE. Many are just too ignorant to even LISTEN. That is the problem with this country and why many black americans are NOT always proud of this country.

PEOPLE HAVE BEEN CALLING FOR DAYS FOR HIM TO SAY WHY HE WOULD NOT DISAVOW WRIGHT. WHEN HE SAID IT, YOU DIDN'T LISTEN. I've said for days, Wright and black me his age, can not forget the abuse and racism he suffered in his youth.  What would it take?

Do you people need to see the flesh scars, to believe it was real, and is still real to them!

ENOUGH! ENOUGH! ENOUGH!
I'm a Clinton supporter and it was a great speech. It's too bad most of the people won't hear it.  Now I wish the Obama supporters and Hillary supporters would just stick to the issues.  Of, course that would have to be up to the news media to focus on the issues and not race and gender.  Right MSNBC?

Anyone who is a Clinton supporter who didn't like what he had to say is just being stupid.  Again, this just illustrates how great both candidates are and I wouldn't be afraid to vote for either of them. I'm still pulling for Hillary, because I think she's the better candidate, but am proud to have Obama as a fellow Dem who can also get it done.
I have a lot of work to do so I can't comment widely...I hope I will get to hear/see the whole speech later (I heard about half of it while driving).

But in response to a question Joe Scarborough just asked, whether it will impact, whether he will lose votes in PA because of the speech...I just wanted to say one thing.

I want a President who has the courage to do what's right even IF it means losing Pennsylvania (or any other particular state).  That is precisely what leadership is...its about things that are bigger then the votes in any particular state (the popular vote, the delegate count, the electoral college).  I want leadership that seeks to do what's right even if it hurts with a certain sector of votes.

I will refrain from other comments until I get a chance to hear the whole speech...

Obama, Unity, 08
I am truly amazed at the idiots who comment on this site. You toothless mouth breathers should be basnished to some place in the world where no one has to listen to you stupid ideas on race. I feel for your children (hopefully you do not have any) that have to listen to your hate. You should be ashamed, but my guess is you are to stupid to be ashamed. This was a great speech my someone who could be a great president. If you are stupid to see that do us all a favour and disappear from this planet.
He might be the bravest man I've ever witnessed.
I read the prepared speech listed at the NY Times.  It was fantastic.

But, as expected, the Obama haters will simply cherry pick what serves their hate mongering, fear mongering, agendas.   The talk radio hacks will play small sound bites, taken out of context, to try and instill racial hatred and fear into their listeners to serve their political agenda, and many will believe what they say as true, no matter how false and twisted from reality it may be.

Many will continue to use this issue as a way to drive a wedge through this country.  To keep the racial hatreds alive.  To keep us divided.  They care more for their ambitions than they do for the country.  It's the politics of old, divide and conquer.  Instead of talking about what makes them the best to be President, they try to tear down their competition.

We have a choice.  Old divisive ways... or a new approach.

It's not really a choice in my eyes.  Obama 08!
Don't start digging Obama's grave yet.  Look what happened to Hillary when we started digging hers.    This race is volatile and exciting.  Race and gender issues have to be addressed in light of these 2 candidates.   An African AMerican friend of mine recently said that he thinks America is not ready for a 'Black' president or a 'female' president. Those were his exact words. I hope this isn't true, but this may be a sad truth that we are facing. Is the rest of the world really so much more progressive than us?!
Bravo President Obama...you took on a tough issue and hammered it home.

That my friends is an example of leadership, courage and just plain balls!

Go Obama...I'm donating another $50 today
Simply an awesome speech given by a man who represents the hope of many of us that American can move to another level of greatness. One that includes everyone and isn't hamstrung by racism and divisions between the haves and the have-nots.

Despite the naysayers who commented earlier, this will be a speech that children read about in years to come. This was on par with JFK and MLK at their finest, in other words America at her finest.

If Obama had to hit a homerun with this speech, he actually hit a grand slam!
Wow I can not believe people can listen to that speech and not take something positive from it. This only proves why he is the superior candidate. We do have an opportunity to FINALLY LOOK PAST RACE. You can't make everything better with a speech.  His judgment and past can be cleared up with a speech...um no no.  His whole campaign can be run on a speech...um no no.  What if George Bush just gave a speech after he effed things up....doesn't help the situation.  I would like somebody with experience so we don't have to hear a speech!
I read the speech and found it great. But, I'm pro Obama. It seems his supporters felt the same. I see posts from the usual haters who hated it, along w/ other comments from people who clearly wouldn't consider him anyhow.
Question: What do undecideds--does this sway you one way or another?
Wow, that was POWERFUL!!!  He hit the nail on it's head....I have the utmost respect for this young man.  He summed it all up in a matter of 40 minutes at the Constitution Center in Philadelphia.  This is a Presidential candidate that America may not have another chance to get in another 50-60 years!  God Bless you Barak Obama, and God Bless America!!!!  Amen!!!
WOW,  this is the greatest speech in the history of speeches.....this man is just so wonderful he'll go down in history as the greatest president of all time,  put a fork in Hillary she's done....nobody could ever top this campaign and this great man!!....God Help Us!!
So he LIED about KNOWING of the type of person Rev. Wright was??  SO HE KNEW ALL ALONG ??  OMG !

UNREAL !!  What else has he/will he lie about?

The Republicans are going to rip his to shreds in the fall... THANK YOU AMERICA.. we will have another Republican in office for 4 more years!!

WAIT till they dig up Bill Ayrers!
Obama rules. His truthfulnes is refreshing. The people on here must racist or a closet racist. If this man does not become our next president then we get what we deserve. Just like Bush! And to all the people that profit from dividing the country shame on you. This a very old issue and we really need to focus on the future. It is crutial to the sucess of the country.

This was an incredibly profound speech.  Barack Obama is a brilliant man who transcends the hate filled bias of those who have replayed the Wright video on a continuous loop for almost a week now , while making no mention of Ferraro or Billy Graham, Jesse Jackson( both Clinton spiritual advisers) who had to apologise for anti-semitic remarks, or Hagee, or Parsley or Pat Robertson. Anyone who can't move on now, has other motives that have nothing to do with the Wright situation. America needs to wake up and see the brilliant leader that is Barack Obama before it is too late. He is fearless and exactly what the world needs right now.
HE DIDN'T TAKE THE EASY WAY OUT LIKE EVERYONE THOUGHT HE WOULD AND SHOULD ! HE SPOKE FROM HIS HEART AND SOUL ! WOW ! A TRUTHFUL POLITICIAN ! IF THAT DOSEN'T GIVE ONE HOPE, WHAT WILL ?
The most curious part of this whole speech is to read the comments of the angry white people posting on this blog. I will never understand why some people get so verbally violent when core issues are addressed, is the threat to them that real?

I hope obama can overcome these verbal terrorists and prove to THEM that their views are in isolation as are they.

I am 61 year old white male; I am grateful that Barack Obama is offering his service to this country as President.  His speech was honest, courageous and challenging.  He inspires me and raises the bar for everyone of us to work together to overcome the fears, biases and division that our politics feeds upon.  What a change from the current office holder this would be!!!!!!
Truly amazing.  This is a courageous and powerful speech, and will be reprinted and rebroadcast for many years.  This is the next president.  This is what a true leader looks like.  This is what a true leader sounds like.  And a true leader doesn't always play it safe.  Barack Obama is the next FDR, the next JFK that we so desperately need in this country.  This is history, folks.
Pat Robertson was George Bush's 'spiritual advisor', America elected him twice. John Hagee, who has made some controversial remarks of race and denominations, endorsed John McCain……John doesn't have to give a speech about Hagee's views. James Dobson said Spongebob was being hijacked by gays and was close to being a representation of them to the detriment of children (paraphrase)….he supported George Bush….and Bush won re-election.

No one has been more divisive in their policies than George Bush and the evangelists who supported and advised him…YET HE HAD TO GIVE NO SPEECHES TO JUSTIFY THEIR RANTS. The disparity in treatment between George Bush and Barack on issues that involve pastors is glaring and disturbing. Pat Robertson was Bush's ACTUAL SPIRITUAL ADVISOR while in the White House….. the absurdity of this is telling. Get a clue…
I suspect that many of the comments JUST saying he's finished or done or toast are votes that never would have come to him anyway...to react to such a strong speech with such an immediate and short (as in not considering his words at all) means that you never even considered what he had to say.

sorry, just noticed that reading the first comments.

Obama 08
This was the most honest, even handed speech regarding the race issue in this country's history.  Those who attack it will simply identify their own thinly veiled hate.  Obama may not win in the end, and our nation will have missed an incredible opportunity to begin, in earnest, to address and heal the wounds that have plagued us for so many years.
Absolutely serious question here - does anyone know Barack Obama's position on reparations for slavery?  Several of the things he said in his speech today could be construed as arguments for reparation payments.  Obviously that would be a highly unpopular political position to take right now - but has he ever disavowed the idea or otherwise stated a position on it?
Kathryn in Bham, you've been against him from the beginning, this faux outrage and disappointment is ruining this blog! Go away!
This was one of the best speeches I've ever heard.  He may come out even stronger than he was before.  We NEED Obama to be President.
The measure of the man is impressive.

Tremendous speech. He has my vote.

A speech about much more than the primary and a clear indicator of where the country needs to go.

Balanced, fair, honest and above all Presidential.
Beautiful speech!  Well done Obama!  This one will go down in history.
A FANTASTIC EXPRESSION OF HONESTY AND INTEGRITY......QUALITIES WE HUNGER FOR IN A PRESDIENT!!  OBAMA HAD THE COURAGE AND CONVICTION TO STAND UP, LOOK UP, AND ENCOURAGE AMERICANS TO LOOK FORWARD TO MOVING BEYOND RACIAL STEREOTYPING AND PETTINESS.
Fox News who broke this story last year, is showing traffic stories and weather.  Other stations are reporting on the speech.  Interesting
Say hello to President Obama.  we will move this country forward no matter how many people fight like dogs to keep America mired in divisiveness
Finally a great leader has emerged who wants to help us help ourselves. We have a long way to go. As a young white man and musician, I was in the past asked to perform at a predominantly black church. I remember being a little taken aback at first how boistrous their service could become. But when I played guitar with their gospel choir is one of a few times in my life that I didn't play the music, it played me. The holy spirit truly flowed. No pompous dogma. I trust Barack Obama to be a great leader. I admire his courage and integrity. Some take their fears and spin it to synthesize some reason to hate. I'll remember you in my prayers.
God Bless America.
Obama '08
Holy Obama Batman these post are all the same ...we love the speech we love the grape koolaid we love wright when do we get to drink the cyanide!
I read his speech and was unable to hear it because I am work.  It is one of the most incredible speeches I have ever read.  My biggest concern is that because his speech was so eloquent, so thoughtful, and showed so much depth--sound bites can never capture the breadth of it--and if sentences are run by the pundits out of context Obama's intent will be lost and distorted.  Consequently, unless read in entirety, the speech may go over many people's heads. Can you imagine President Bush trying to understand even his first paragraph.  What a contrast.  We need Obama now to restore intelligence, compassion and a real love of this entire country with all its flaws to the mainstream.
The best speech I have ever heard. I have tears in my eyes. I absolutely think Obama WILL be the PRESIDENT!!!
HAs everyone gone crazy. the best speech you ever heard? whatever folks. he never heard the guy say this, now he heard it all. Im sure the great pastor does many wonderful things for his people. But he is a racist Just as Geraldine Ferrarao said some racists things. Barack Obama should completely disassociate himself and his family from this man. But he isnt going to do that. wake up folks
BRAVO!

Senator Obama has spoken the truth, and the truth is WE ALL have work to do. I have never been prouder to be an American than I am today.

Obama '08

Well, this was a very great speech. BUT given the circumstances, it was just a double when he needed to swing for the fences and put the pitch out of the park.

UNFORTUNATELY, come convention time, he will not be the democratic nominee. A dissapointing ending to a bright future. Goodbye Barack, see you soon on the
public speaking circuit.
This was such a powerful and honest speech that it dimishes the Clintons as petty and small.
Obama rose above and beyond the everyday with this and opened up areas we, as Americans, have long sought to bury.
Yes it's all our fault, and especially Ferraro.  Such a great speach - BS!  I can't believe my eyes when I read some of these posts.  Can people really be this blind?  I believe many of these people would kill themselves if Obama asked them to - this is crazy.  I caucaused for this guy for three and a half hours - what a mistake.  I will vote for John McCain.  I advise those who can think for themselves to vote for John McCain, or at least Hillary.
I sat and watched the speech with my mom, my aunt and uncle in stunned silence. We were tearing up at the sheer courage and honesty he showed. It simply reminded us why we need him as president--- no other politician in this race would or could deliver that speech. Barack believes in what America stands for and the core values of what has made and will continue to make America great--- hard work and responsibility and faith and courage and compassion and yes, most of all, HOPE. It made me truly proud to be American. Onto to the hard work of unifying and perfecting.....

Thank you for proving that this country still contains racial and discriminate divides.  You are the core at what Obama's speach was trying to prove.  Continuing to think the way YOU do does more harm to this country and your family.

Please do the country a favor and vote for the 2 Republicans running for office, maybe there lies your dream ticket: Clinton/McCain.  This county needs a real "I TOLD YOU SO."  Unfortunately, the last 8 years have proven nothing to those who continue to be influenced by the media, and can't form an opinion based on facts.

FACT: CLINTON AND MCCAIN WILL BRING THIS COUNTRY DOWN!  IF YOU THINK IT'S BAD NOW, WAIT.... JUST WAIT.
This has to be one of the best speeches that I've ever heard!  No matter which candidate you may support, you would be lying to yourself if you can not acknowledge the power of this speech.  I would like for all of you to just close your eyes and picture Mr. Bush giving a speech (it doesn't matter which one) and then replay Sen. Obama's speech in your mind.  This is what a President should sound like--honest, transparent, and eloquent.

This is how BO READS a speech, rehearsed and READ to you fools!
in his interviews, obama said he had never heard the sermons on the youtube videos, but he never denied hearing the guy criticize america in his sermons.  totally consistent.  gee wiz, people.  get a freaking clue!!
You all can say what you want. Doesn't matter if you believe him or not. The simple fact is that he opened up, told the truth, and moved a lot of people. He spoke of things we all know, feel, and regret. This is a man who can unite. And God knows, this country needs it. Stop seeing what the other camp says as truth, but just as more lies and tricks. I feel sorry for those of you that can't think for yourselves.
please let this country be better than the bloggers who hold fast to small notions in this great nation

What he said was that Ferraro isn't a racist, just because she made a divisive comment.  That's what all the Clinton supporters have been saying all along.

That seems to me to be reaching out - not closing the door... rejecting the sin, but not the sinner.

Excellent speech by Obama -- he now has my full support.

It is unfortunate, as evidenced by some of the comments here, that some people can't turn off their own prejudices long enough to listen to a different way of thinking.
