McCain camp fires back at Obama

From NBC's Mark Murray
McCain senior adviser Mark Salter just released this statement regarding the Iraq speech Obama gave earlier in the day. If this biting statement by Salter -- often viewed as McCain's alter ego -- is any indication, an Obama-McCain general election might be as contentious as the Obama-Clinton primary has been.

"Senator Obama says that ending the war will not be easy, that 'there will be dangers involved.' Yet, in that patented way of his, he declines to name those dangers. Let me enumerate a few: al Qaeda, which is now on the run, will survive, claim victory and continue to provoke sectarian tensions that, while they have been subdued by the 'tactics' of the surge, still exist and are ripe for provocation by al Qaeda, which would almost certainly ignite again civil war in Iraq, a civil war that could easily descend into genocide. To say that invading Iraq was used as a recruiting tool for al Qaeda is one thing. To pretend that our defeat there won't provide an even bigger one is foolish supposition. Iran, which trains Shia extremists and is known to arm and equip Sunni extremists, a fact Senator Obama is apparently unaware of, will also view our premature withdrawal as a victory, as will other countries in the region, and the biggest state supporter of terrorists, a country with nuclear ambitions and a stated desire to destroy the State of Israel, will see its influence in the Middle East grow significantly. These are some of 'dangers,' that our premature withdrawal from Iraq will engender, and they all have the potential to destabilize the entire region. A realistic plan to prevent them from occurring is what people with experience in statecraft call 'strategy,' something Senator Obama has not offered yet.

"Senator Obama, as has also become a habit of his 'new politics,' mischaracterizes John McCain's position by saying McCain did not want to reduce troops because the violence in Iraq was too high, and now do not wish to do so because the violence in down. The reason violence is down is because General Petraeus' counterinsurgency is, which even Senator Obama recognizes, succeeding.  Those 'tactics,' are advancing our 'strategy.' Deprive General Petraeus of the resources and manpower to employ those tactics, or worse, leave Iraq altogether, and our strategy will collapse. That is national security 101. John McCain wants American forces to come home when our clear and serious interests at stake in Iraq, which nearly 4,000 Americans have given their lives to secure, are truly safe, when al Qaeda is defeated; Iran's influence is contained, and the potential for a truly cataclysmic civil war in Iraq is remote.  That, I think, is what is called 'making us safer.' Senator Obama's plan, if it can be charitably described as one, would do the reverse."

*** UPDATE *** Obama spokesman Bill Burton responds, “We wish the McCain campaign well as they try to figure out the difference between Iran and al Qaeda. Yesterday, Senator McCain said that Iran is “taking al Qaeda into Iran, training them and sending them back,” to Iraq. This was shortly after telling talk radio host Hugh Hewitt, “As you know, there are al Qaeda operatives that are taken back into Iran, given training as leaders, and they’re moving back into Iraq.” Or does Senator McCain believe the clarification that he issued yesterday, “I'm sorry, the Iranians are training extremists, not al Qaeda.” Or does he believe the statement that he issued today: “Al Qaeda and Shia extremists -- with support from external powers such as Iran -- are on the run but not defeated." Huh?"

More: “This fall, John McCain will support George Bush Foreign Policy 101: endless war in Iraq; a policy of not talking to adversaries that has not worked; and a disturbing tendency to conflate very different threats. Barack Obama will offer a clean break from the failed policies of the past. He will end the war in Iraq, finish the job in Afghanistan, and focus on the threats of the 21st century.”

I can see the 527 republican leaning ads already, with Obama and his racist pastor Rev. Wright, hugging, with Rev. Wright's G-d D-mn America, speech in the background.

Anyone who things Obama can overcome this, is as naive as he is.

And I've been posting warnings about his church for some time.  I told you so!
THAT MCCAIN GAVE SUCH A LENGTHY RESPONSE PROVES TWO THINGS:

1. OBAMA HIT HIM HARD - WHERE IT HURTS

2. OBAMA PUT HIM ON THE DEFENSIVE, FORCING HIM TO OVER-EXPLAIN.

HA HA HA HA HA HA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The economy will sink McCain. Are you better off then you were eight years ago? Are you neighbors better off?
If you're a corporate CEO then your outsourcing of american jobs has made you better off but the "let them be" approach to business the conservatives have employed has equaled to giving American business a rope of greed which they used to hang this country. McCain doesn't stand a chance against BO or HC. By November we'll be a third world country.
What Sen. Obama meant is there are other factors in Iraq that will inhibit the withdrawal process...you know, the new air strips that are being added to the five military bases over there to make them permanent installations over in Iraq, the billions of dollars in contracts that will still keep our American citizens working for no-bid contractors over there, and static from the congressional war-mongers.  Are we so deeply entrenched over there that only someone who has united the country and has a tremendous amount of support of the American people can truly break the bond?

One thing I as a middle-aged adult will keep harping about are those "senior moments" McCain seems to have as late.  Do you really want an old-timer in the white house.  If you think Bush was difficult to deal with, try to deal with someone so old he thinks he has all the answers while taking medication to delay his Alzheimers.  And then think of this same old guy in charge of our national security...it's more frightening than having Hillary answer that phone at 3 a.m.
For McCain to say that Obama is completely unaware that Iran trains Shia extremists is absolutely ludicrous.  McCain had to be told by Lieberman during an interview that Iran does not train Al Queda, that Iran trains Shia extremists.  Besides, Al Queda was not even in Iraq until the US invaded the country on trumped up charges.  Al Queda is getting to be a name for any extremist organization the US can use to put spin on the American public.  Wake up America!
Looks like McCain is following right in Bush's footsteps. More lies, more hyperbole, more trying to solve the problems in the middle east through bombs and guns. The idea that we are somehow making things better by staying in Iraq is insane. Our very presence in the region is a distabilizing one and it's typically egocentric American thinking to assume that only we can fix the problems of the Iraqi people. Poor America, forced to bear the white man's burden.

We are loosing the war on terror because of George W Bush and we will continue to loose the war on terror under John McCain. They offer no solutions, only the same endless cycle of violence that we've been caught up in for years.
It is sad that John Macain still holds on to the belief that we must to stay in Iraq to "win", to kill or drive out al Qaeda.  I have news for you John.  Al qaeda is laughing at us now and will be for the next 100 years.  Our allies pity us.  Even if we succeed, will the US be any safer?  Even if we spend another 10,000 American lives to drive them out, wont they just return when we leave?  Bush broke from the US doctrine of not attacking another nation unless US interests were in immediate danger.  We were told there was WMD and al Qaeda.  These claims proved untrue.  Well, I for one do not want to get fooled a 3rd time (Bush 1st & 2nd terms, Mccain).  If we kill 10,000 Americans over the next 3 years to run al Qaeda out of Iraq, they will just reenter the country again.  Remember, these guys think in terms of centuries, not election cycles.  We need to stop now.  Let's win the war on terror with our stengths and allies, not by trying to reinvent a country's ancient way of life.

Obama 08
Soldier, Please accept my thanks and gratitude for your service. Do not feel all Americans do not back your sacrifice. We do, and we continue to pray for the safety of all those involved in the conflict.

What I can't understand is the liberals cries for involvement in Darfur, because of the violence, but say the violence in Iraq was not happening. How many more mass graves must be uncovered?
"Barack Obama will offer a clean break from the failed policies of the past. He will end the war in Iraq, finish the job in Afghanistan, and focus on the threats of the 21st century.”

Ah, yes! Certainly it will be that easy for someone who has visited Iraq only once. And what about Pakistan; doesn't that need some work before you can just "finish the job" in Afghanistan. THIS is the threat of the 21st century; much more complex than a vague solution summed up in two sentences make it appear, which happens to be the only statements about the Messiah in the entire response. What a joke!
Hey everyone - you're missing the point. Salter's comeback was devastating, as was the fact that Obama called attention to his own idiocy during a campaign stop in NC: there is evidence to suggest ties between Iran and al Qaeda. Does it fit into the MSM's frame? No. Is it there? Yes. Obama walked into this one, kind of like when he said there was no al Qaeda in Iraq. I think this is a point for McCain
