Bill touts Hillary's electability

Posted: Wednesday, March 19, 2008 2:51 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC/NJ's Mike Memoli
BETHLEHEM, PA -- Bill Clinton told voters in Northeastern Pennsylvania today that his wife is the only Democratic candidate "who can stack up against Sen. McCain on the national security issues," and that a victory in this state could pave the way to her winning the nomination.

Also, on the anniversary of the start of the Iraq war, he also faced off with a heckler who claimed he had "gutted" the military as president.

Clinton was actually talking about an area where he said his wife is more conservative than President Bush -- the budget -- and he cited his own policies in his Administration. “It is true that when I was president we had four surpluses in a row for the first time in 70 years,” he said.

At that point, a man in the back of the room began shouting out at the former president, saying he “gutted the military” in office, and “showed disgust for the military. The crowd quickly drowned him out with boos, as Clinton offered a tongue-in-cheek rejoinder.

“Yeah, I gutted the military,” he said. “That’s why two former chairmen of the joint chiefs of staff are for Hillary. That’s why 34 generals and admirals are for Hillary.” Turning serious, he continued: “In every respect, military readiness was greater when I left office than it is today. The Republicans gutted the military.”

And before returning to fiscal issues, he offered a clue that he’s seen this kind of feedback before from a crowd. “You know, whenever you find somebody screaming it’s normally because they don’t have the facts on their side,” he said.

Clinton did tout his wife’s readiness to be commander-in-chief, and said she has “credibility” when she calls for removing troops “because of the enormous support she has in the military.” He said currently, the United States is “not doing them any favors” in Iraq by promising an unending commitment.

“If we do what Senator McCain says, and tell them we’re prepared to stay 100 years, than 99 years from now our great-great-grandchildren will be reading newspaper stories about how we sure wish the Iraqis would figure out how to split that oil money,” he said. “No one wants Iraq to fail. But the United States has done more than what we hired on to do, and it is time to bring our people home. That’s her position.”

Clinton also said that Hillary “asks me to talk about” ensuring that when troops do return, the country lives up to the “staggering future of responsibility to our veterans.” “She will never stand by and let us make the hideous mistake we made after Vietnam, and confuse an unpopular war with our moral obligation to the people who serve,” he said. “If you want somebody that will take care of America’s veterans, she’s the best bet for you as president of the United States.”

As he started a tour of cities in Northeastern Pennsylvania, Clinton laid out the stakes in the race, saying Pennsylvania will be key in turning things in Hillary’s favor. “The bottom line is this -- if you will give her a big victory here, she will roll through these last states. She will have more popular votes. She will be the nominee of the Democratic Party, and she will get elected president of the United States,” he said.

Ending his speech, he also touted her electability again. “She’s the only one who can stack up against Sen. McCain on the national security issues, and clearly show why the Republican economics will not work and we don’t need four more years of it,” he said. “And if you look at, I think among the states that President Bush carried twice, I believe she will carry Florida, West Virginia, Arkansas, and Ohio. That’s more than enough to win... I’m just telling you, she can win this race and we don’t want to go to all the trouble and have all these people coming into this democratic process, all this excitement, and everything, and not win. We have got to win in November.”

*** UPDATE *** RNC spokesman Alex Conant responds to Bill Clinton: “Hillary Clinton will withdraw troops from Iraq irrespective of conditions on the ground and the progress our men and women in uniform have made.  Her prescription would result in al Qaeda claiming victory in the War on Terror and cede Iraq to extremists who would try and use it as a base of operation to launch attacks.  Senator Clinton shifts on Iraq and inability to articulate a consistent and straightforward position seriously put into question her credibility to deal with the issue.”

Pardon me, but who is it that's running for Prez?
this election cycle has turned into a total disgrace, how can we try and promote democracy worldwide when it is such a farce in our own country, the power intoxicated clintons and their band of corrupt campaign operatives are the worst thing a supposed democratic nation could ever produce, never once will you ever hear a straight answer uttered by bill or hillary either one, they have taken the art of misdirection, deception and lying to a new plateau, they are without a doubt the king and queen of spin with all the integrity of a crack whore, completely devoid of any morals
Hey Bill,
There were surpluses because of the Internet boom and its ripple effects.  The Internet boom was fueled by the people who are largely voting for a different candidate (those who are now 30-50 yrs of age).  Stop trying to take credit for what we did.
Bush and Donald Rumsfeld wanted a LEANER army for the new threats this country faces.  FACT:  The Bush clan has closed more bases than Bill Clinton.  FACT:  Bush's policy has so alienated people from joining the military that not only can we not protect ourselves should there be another major war front but if it weren't for operation stop loss (Bush's pre-draft solution............not allowing those who have already served their time to depart from the military) then we wouldn't be able to carry out our current missions.
Just one thing, Bill, it wasn't the gutting of the military that allowed the attack on the USS Cole and 9/11; it was what you did to the our intelligence agencies.  It was during your administration that someone came up with the brilliant idea of not letting our various intelligence agencies share information!!!!  Was Hillary in on that decision?
One of the problems that surfaces time and time again about the clintons is the fact that bill isn't running for president. A vote for hillary isn't/shouldn't be a vote for bill.  There are so many people voting hillary in for the wrong reasons.
Now there's reports and exit polls from ohio stating  rep voters rushed to vote for hillary.

Considering that, it only shows obama as a stronger candidate - he's campaigning against 2 clintons - lol.  You gotta give him credit there!

Hillary has a leadership/management style that doesn't work well - look at her campaign and strategies.  Her proven management style on healthcare while in the white house aleady proves her poor management.  Can't you imagine what congress would look like?

You know, hillary does have good/strong qualities in her that voters on both sides see. Bill as a president did do wonderful things. No one is taking that away from either of them.  But that's not what makes a good presidency. Way too many negatives to ignore - It's the trust issues, it's the past performance, lobbyist, investigations, impeachments, lying to congress, etc.  America wasn't happy with the clintons and the clintons weren't exactly working on the issues that the country needed.  Lawyers were visiting the white house a lot - lol.

Many of us don't want to go back there again.  We can't trust them.  There is just way to much evidence about where we've been before and yes Hillary would've made a great president but for her track record.

I think our younger democratic voters don't need to see that side of politics ever again.

Soon Hillary will be up at 3am calling Barack Obama to ask him what its like to be President of the United States.
Obama stated in a speech I guess they'll have to listen to me because I'll have the biggest chair.  We need a little less testosterone in the White House.  Bill Clinton is an adulterer as was John F. Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson and Franklin Delanore Rosevelt.  Hillary Clinton is not an adulterer and they spent millions of dollars investigating her and couldn't find anything to charge her with. Obama is a hyprocrit. He shows the picture of his African American grandmother that he barely knows and leaves the Euro American family that raised him in the closet until he needs them.
The Clinton's will sink the democatic party in their effort to get back in the white house.I thought this election was about delegates, now they talking about popular votes..they've talked about electability, big states, they even praise the republican nominee in an effort to dirty her own party member(Borack). The Clinton's said the Florida and Michigan elections was fair and they should be counted..America I hope you're listening..the Clinton's will lie and flip flop to get back to the white house..Now..Is that what you need America???I don'y think so...Beware of those Poli-Tricians
While I can respect the fact that Hillary is a smart person, two facts will ensure that I would never vote for her--ever.

1.  She is as ruthless as they come.  I cannot vote for someone with absolutely no moral center, and no sense of fair play.  Every action she takes is all about politics, and she doesn't care if she destroys the Democratic party to get the nomination.

2.  If by some chance she were to get the nomination and if by some miracle she would defeat McCain, she would get even less done than Carter--not because she's incapable of holding the office, but because she is such a divisive figure, Republicans wouldn't let her.  The conservative right would focus on every little mistake and this would make the stalemates of the 1990's (including the budget shutdown) look like the New Deal or Great Society in terms of progress towards an agenda.  She certainly wouldn't have anything resembling a mandate from the voters, and government would grind to a halt while we wait out her term.
