Obama: McCain represents a third Bush term

Posted: Thursday, March 20, 2008 1:51 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC/NJ's Aswini Anburajan
CHARLESTON, WV -- Obama declared that McCain would carry out a "third Bush term" in a speech that stressed that detrimental effects the Iraq war has had on the American economy.

"When you're spending over $50 to fill up your car because the price of oil is four times what it was before Iraq, you're paying a price for this war. When Iraq is costing each household about $100 a month, you're paying a price for this war," Obama told an invited crowd at the University of West Virginia in Charleston.

The speech followed one he gave yesterday in North Carolina, where Obama argued that the war had strategically damaged the United States.

In today's speech, he hit McCain early and often in his speech, saying that his call to renew the Bush tax cuts during war time was irresponsible. "John McCain once opposed these tax cuts -- he rightly called them unfair and fiscally irresponsible. But now he has done an about face and wants to make them permanent, just like he wants a permanent occupation in Iraq. No matter what the costs, no matter what the consequences, John McCain seems determined to carry out a third Bush term," Obama said.

The "Bush-McCain policies," Obama continued, had "ballooned" the national debt.

Using the words of Robert Kennedy, "past error is no excuse for its own perpetuation," Obama claimed that McCain has refused "to learn from the failures of the Bush years."

"Instead of offering an exit strategy for Iraq, he's offering us a 100-year occupation," Obama said. "Instead of offering an economic plan that works for working Americans, he's supporting tax cuts for the wealthiest among us who don't need them and aren't asking for them.

The McCain campaign responded with a statement. "Today, Senator Obama once again displayed how fundamentally wrong he is on the central issues facing America's future: our economy and national security," said McCain communications director Jill Hazelbaker. "On the economy, Senator Obama offers the tired tax and spend ideas of the past... On national security, Senator Obama would rather rehash the past than look forward with resolve to address fundamental challenges and opportunities we have today to secure our future. He has embraced an irresponsible policy of withdrawing our troops from Iraq without regard for the conditions on the ground."

In his speech, Obama ran through a laundry list of domestic priorities that he claimed had been laid to the wayside because of the money spent in Iraq, a notable political move in a state that has extreme poverty and one of the highest numbers of veterans and enlisted military in Iraq.

In a race where the Democratic nomination is still up for grabs, the lack of references to Hillary Clinton was notable. While Obama mentioned McCain eight times, he only made one cursory reference to Clinton, talking about her own criticism of McCain "for supporting the policies that have led to our enormous war costs."

Obama went on, "But her point would have been more compelling had she not joined Senator McCain in making the tragically ill-considered decision to vote for the Iraq war in the first place," he said.

Senator Jay Rockefeller introduced Obama and told the crowd that he knew from Republican chatter, "I know that the one person that John McCain does not want to run against is Barack Obama."

West Virginia Gov. Joe Manchin also spoke, as he did when he introduced Hillary Clinton on her visit to the state earlier this week. He has yet to endorse a candidate, and was careful to say neutral in his comments.

Any chance you could post the full text of the speech? I can only get MSN from work. :(

Thanks!
The Super delegates will soon have a caucas. I hope they go with public sentiment. Obama will lose a general election. Not only because the $250,000 he had to give to charity because given by Rezko, but silently approving of Rev. Wrights inappropriate statements but also his assocaition with Willaim Ayers. WHAT DOES THIS SPELL!

We need to come toegther behind one candidate to stop the bleeding George Bush is causing like a 1 trillion dollar war.

People - Read My Lips - No more republicans!

Write your the superdelegates in your state to support Senator Clinton!

Finally we're back to the issues facing America.  There has been an attack on the middle class for the last 8 yrs and my wallet has definitely felt it.  I want to know what can these candidates do to make our economy better & bring our sons & daughters home from a war that should never be waged.  It's time for real talk, and I must say all everyone will be able to provide is a speech until they're sitting in the Oval office.

And you Obama represents a 2nd Carter term. If you ever get there - God forbid.
@Alise:

So Obama voted for funding the troops when he's been a senator and that's a bad thing?  It's like he said (paraphrased): "Once the bus is driven into a ditech, there's only so many ways you can get it out."

Remember this: Barack Obama never even had to offer an opinion on whether to go to the war or not.  He was a state senator.

Even though he wasn't responsible for voting up or down on the war, he did MORE research than Hilary Clinton, and apparently, a lot of other senators did.  He read the National Intelligence Estimate and it wasn't even his job to do so.  That was Hilary's job and she failed to do it.  That's the kind of responsibility we need in a President.

He didn't just pull a speech out of his @ss in 2002.  He did the hard work of researching the issue and anybody who did the research on the Iraq vote would have KNOWN what President Bush was doing.
I want someone who agrees with this conservative tax structure and small government fiscal policy to explain how it makes any sense that we are recording record deficits each quarter to fund this war. We are going to pay for it someday, but until then we will just pay the interest on the money we're using from China and watch the dollar fall into the crapper. Yeah, that makes a lot of sense.
Unfortunately, this is likely to be true (McCain = Third Bush term).  However we are in a pickle, if not Obama then who?  I don't want either Clinton or McCain.  How do we end up losing our most qualified candidates before the general election?  So frustrating.

Please let it be Obama 08!  I want to vote in the Fall.
Will. Bristol, Wi:

(This may come off sounding sarcastic, but it's not.)
I will pray for you and your family.  I'm sorry about the hard times, and I truly hope the best for you...that you and your wife can be gainfully employed and be able to raise your children in your house.  God bless you.
I would be interested to know if McCain is a member of Hillary's bible group, it may explain a few things.  If you're not aware of what I am talking about, google search or look on Wiki for "the Family."  It is pretty crazy!
Thank you for that, Bonnie. That brightened my day. I'm glad there are those out there who still know that the key to the future is discourse.   :)
I really don't like any one that is running. But how can you people want a guy in the office that promotes hate against WHITES and anyone not black. His church is more worried about the people in Africa then he i sabout the United States. You people that don't see what this guy is about you are stupid.
"Obama owes the American people an apology"
-- John Doe

John, when are you going to apologize to us for the hate and divisiveness you spew here day after day?
Republicans claim to be fiscally responsible conservatives so I ask you honestly which is worse "borrow and spend" or "tax and spend."  I don't see the spending on Iraq ending anytime soon so these are the choices.  Any Republicans willing to honestly answer this question? You thoughts please.
Why aren't these important speeches getting coverage on the politics page?
What a concept, proving you can go toe to toe with the Republican candidate and win the general election instead of tearing down the Democratic party and praising the Republicans.

Oh before I forget, thanks for nothing Hillary for pulling down the Democratic poll numbers versus McCain.  Isn't there a DNC rule for disqualifying superdelegates who support a Republican? I believe that happened to Joe Liebermann. Please consider disqualifying Clinton for her praise of McCain and endorsing him as qualified to be commander in chief.  I can't think of anyone who would be a worse commander in chief.
What BS, if the Iraq war ended today there would be no change in the price of oil.  Only economic idiots don't know that China, India, and other emerging courties along with the inability to process oil for gas because of the lack of refineries; and pure market manipulation is the reason gas is at the price it is.  I guess MSNBC doesn't fact check anything when it comes to Obama.  If this was turned around MSNBC/First Read would be bringing up every economic reason that I stated above and point out how untruthfull the statement was if Obama was the President.  Once again you see how MSNBC allows their candidate to get by.  When will this media bias stop?
"I may be wrong about this...."
--jerry/corpus christi texas

You may not be wrong jerry but you do show partisan bias in not also highlighting when Republicans waste money. I agree that repairing our infrastructure would be a better use of taxpayer money.
Obama.. heres some news... you are the second coming of Jimmy Carter.

You are as clueless about the world as Carter was/is.  Example-- no Al Quita in Iraq before 2003?  Do some basic research buddy!  Or did you buy all your work when you were in college?

Obama or Clinton are the candidates to vote for if you "think" government will take care of you and want to go to socialism and appease Europe's distain for our great country. The Republican candidate Mccain is the candidate to vote for if you believe in Capitalism and all the freedom this country has to offer you. Remember Tenn-Care, Tennessee and Al Gore's answer as a pilot for universal health care? The Democrat's don't want you to remember because this was going to be their showcase for a national health care program. It was a disaster...read on it. As ususal government can't run a business and it failed.  The Democrats are good at deflecting blame and responsibility for bad decisions and doing a lot of whining instead of fixing things and taking responsibility. We have the worst legislators in my lifetime now being led by Pelosi and Reed. Just look at the polls; the figures are worst than that for President "Blame Everything On" Bush.
Why does MSNBC not print the truth.  Other Media outlets are saying that Clinton is leading Obama in the National pols.  Yet MSNBC still continues their biased coverage of Obama and posts all the hate messages from his supporters.  Truth be told most poeple are waking up to the fact that Obama is all talk and does not have an original idea to his name
McCain will walk all over him in the General Election
Now we know that one of John McCain's minions distributed the Rev. Wright videos. McCain has eliminated this person from his campaign, but I'm afraid it's too little and too late because the damage has been done for Barack Obama.  I would have thought John McCain would be the one person who would not condone this kind of "dirty tricks", but I must have been wrong.  I fear we are all condemned to at least four more years of the Clintons.  No doubt, Hillary will get an EMPEROR'S CLUB VIP card for Bill to keep him busy while she destroys the country. The only thing I can do is pray that, by some miracle, Barack is the next President.
Oh yeah, it's the University of Charleston in WEST Virginia, not the University of West Virginia in Charleston.
If we don't stop the Bush-McClain-Clinton propaganda now, we will be worse off in four years than we are now.  We cannot afford to wait any longer -- the economy is in very bad shape and get worse.

I have two teenage sons and I did not bear my boys to fight in some fool's (George Bush) war.  If these wars continue and they will according to McCain, the government will reactivate the draft -- no more volunteering for military!

Your sons and daughters will be drafted, later your grandchildren will be drafted, and so on.  John McCain wants to be in Iraq for 100 years!  We already know there has been fighting in the Middle East for centuries.  Further, McCain is now showing signs of a war with Iran.

Hillary is no better than McCain because she signed the declaration of war with Iraq without even reading it!  How can you trust her to have your best interests?

Don't give up on the PERSON WHO MADE YOU FEEL THAT YOU COULD HAVE HOPE AGAIN, THE PERSON WHO MADE YOU FEEL THAT YOU COULD TRUST AGAIN, THE PERSON WHO WANTS WHAT IS RIGHT FOR AMERICA!

LOOK AT THE MAN -- HE DOES NOT HAVE A SELFISH BONE IN HIS BODY!

VOTE YOUR DREAM TEAM:  CHARACTER AND INTEGRITY

VOTE OBAMA
The Democrats need an Obama presidency to make the Carter presidency look like it was successful.
2002 Obama gave a speech too black supporters that were against the war.in 2003 he said well he might have been wrong. When Kerry was in debate and had voted the same as Hillary Obama thought he may have been wrong.July 27 2994 Obama said his views of was were close to Bush's. Nov 23,04 Getting out would not be good idea.now in 2006 He said puting more in wouldnt improve th esituation. When he got into Senate there was only one vote not th esame as Hillary that was he supported Case for more war Hillary voted no.  Now He can say anything he wants and who ever wants can believe everything he says but I am sick and tired of his arragant I am the only one in world with judgement and right ans. We wont even go there he has proved his judgement over and over and it never gets better.
