Clinton: Legitimacy of nominee at stake

From NBC/NJ's Athena Jones
TERRE HAUTE, IN -- Clinton kept the pressure on Obama for another day, urging him to sign on to a re-vote in Michigan and saying not re-doing primaries there and in Florida would call into question the legitimacy of the ultimate nominee.

"I went to Michigan yesterday because I feel so strongly that it is not in the best interests of our party or our chances for victory in November to deny the rights of the people of Florida and Michigan. I do not see how two of our largest and most significant states can be disenfranchised and left out of the process of picking our nominee without raising serious questions about the legitimacy of that nominee," she told reporters after a roundtable at a diner. "So again I would call on Sen. Obama to join me in supporting the rights of the people of Michigan and Florida to have their voices and their votes counted."

She said she would support finding a way to seat the two states' delegates regardless of the outcome. "I would be in favor of fixing this problem no matter what my position," she said. "I have been consistently in favor of it. Remember, I'm the one who kept my name on the ballot. I had no idea what the outcome would be. I did not run advertising in Florida. I abided by the rules and did not campaign in Florida. I didn't know what the outcome would be."

Clinton suggested Obama was afraid to have a re-vote. "For the life of me, I don't understand why Sen. Obama seems to be afraid of letting there be a re-vote in Michigan," she said.

The senator also restated her opposition to NAFTA, despite schedules released yesterday showing she attended at least one meeting on the trade deal during her time as first lady. She also restated her plans for reviewing the agreement.

For the second time this week, Clinton declined to talk about what steps she would take to halt the fall of the dollar, calling any intervention in terms of the value of the currency a "sensitive" topic.

They'll be seated - after you do the right thing and drop out, you have ZERO legitimacy, and if the supers hand it to you, the Democratic Party will have no legitimacy (Party of the people, yeah right;  I'll do like Republicans and start calling it the Democrat Party, after I go independent).
Don't worry Hillary.  Once the super delegates move to Obama and secure his nomination.  You can drop out.  Then the Florida and Michigan Delegates will be sat at the convention.  Problem solved.

Also, I didn't hear you screaming about disenfranchisement last year when the DNC said the delegates wouldn't be sat.  Oh, that's right.  You thought this would be over by Super Tuesday and it wouldn't matter.
Self-service is not a virtue.

Neither is never admitting a mistake.

We already have a president that is self serving, and never admits a mistake.

Obama '08
This is the kind of devilish tactics she uses against anyone who disagrees with her. The same tactics she used against Cooper on healthcare mandates in 1993.

NOT ONLY THAT SHE SUPPORTS LAWLESSNESS, SHE HAS ERASED EVERY POSSIBILITY OF OBAMA ACCEPTING A REVOTE BECAUSE OF HER AGRESSIVE AND PATRONIZING TACTICS.
Florida already said no.  How would Obama change that?

Come on Hillary.  Be realistic here.  Obama is not your issue - the DNC is.

The Wright Stand
Judgment, character and Barack Obama.

By Peter Wehner

Several years ago my wife and children attended a Presbyterian church in Washington, D.C. We liked and respected the senior pastor, we had close friends in the congregation, and we felt spiritually nourished by the congregants and the worship. Two of our children were baptized there.

Not long after the attacks of September 11, my wife and I heard two different visitors — one in remarks during a church service, the other while teaching an adult Sunday-school class — that were derogatory of and inflammatory toward Israel.

Upon hearing the words of these two people — which I found both shocking and disquieting — I immediately raised concerns with the senior pastor. He tried to reassure me and then put me in touch with an associate pastor who was in charge of a ministry to Palestinian Christians (one I had been previously unaware of). I engaged in conversations and written correspondence with the associate pastor and the head of the board of elders over this issue; in the process, I discovered that our church hosted an annual conference which featured only speakers who were highly critical of the state of Israel. For the first time it became clear to me that the church we attended was deeply biased against the Jewish state. When what we deemed to be adequate counter steps were not taken, we left the church, in good measure because of this matter and how it was handled.

I thought of this episode in our lives in the aftermath of learning about the bigoted and vicious anti-American statements by Barack Obama’s pastor, friend, and spiritual adviser, the Reverend Jeremiah Wright Jr. of United Trinity Church of Christ.

I don’t for a moment believe that Senator Obama shares Wright’s manifold and manifest hatreds. What bothers me — particularly as one who has had good things to say about Obama in the past — is why Obama apparently never raised any concerns with Wright about his rhetoric or the black liberation theology being practiced at United Trinity. This was the obvious and appropriate thing to do.

Reverend Wright clearly preaches from a particular cast of mind, one with which Obama was surely familiar. If Obama isn’t willing to voice his concerns and objections with Wright and stand up for his country as it is being slandered by his pastor, what can we expect from Obama when he is asked to stand up against some of the world’s worst dictators?

The options aren’t particularly good for Senator Obama. He either agreed with the views and core beliefs of Reverend Wright, which would essentially disqualify him as a serious candidate for the presidency; or he didn’t agree with Wright but for decades sat passively by and accepted Wright’s teaching and rants. Didn’t Obama consider, even once, pulling Wright aside and pointing out — as any true friend would, in a civil but forceful way — that hailstones of hate simply have no place in a church and that the “social gospel” is not synonymous with preaching bigotry and anti-Americanism?

Beyond that, Senator Obama’s speech on Tuesday, for all the praise it has garnered in many quarters, created additional doubts about Obama’s candor and his willingness to speak up and speak out against a charismatic, forceful, and pernicious figure.

ABC News reports that earlier this month Obama, at a community meeting in Nelsonville, Ohio, said, “I don’t think my church is actually particularly controversial.” Obama went on to say, “[Wright] has said some things that are considered controversial because he’s considered that part of his social gospel; so he was one of the leaders in calling for divestment from South Africa and some other issues like that.”

Last Friday, as Senator Obama was making the round on cable TV trying to explain Wright’s remarks that were being replayed over and over again, Obama indicated that he had never heard his pastor of 20 years make any comments that were anti-American until last week. But in his Philadelphia speech two days ago, Senator Obama seemed to change his explanation:

I have already condemned, in unequivocal terms, the statements of Reverend Wright that have caused such controversy. For some, nagging questions remain. Did I know him to be an occasionally fierce critic of American domestic and foreign policy? Of course. Did I ever hear him make remarks that could be considered controversial while I sat in church? Yes. Did I strongly disagree with many of his political views? Absolutely — just as I’m sure many of you have heard remarks from your pastors, priests, or rabbis with which you strongly disagreed.

But the remarks that have caused this recent firestorm weren’t simply controversial. They weren’t simply a religious leader’s effort to speak out against perceived injustice. Instead, they expressed a profoundly distorted view of this country.

This is where things begin to get sticky for Obama. In half-a-month we’ve gone from Wright and his church being essentially non-controversial; to Obama implying that the venomous statements by Wright came as news to him; to admitting that he was in the pews when Wright spoke as a “an occasionally fierce critic” of American domestic and foreign policy. Those remarks were so fierce that even Obama, himself an orthodox liberal who has scorched the Bush administration, was clearly made uncomfortable by what Wright said.

It also begs the question: What exactly did Wright say that Obama strongly disagreed with? Was Wright in fact presenting a “profoundly distorted view of this country”? The odds are a good deal better than even that he was. But Obama has yet to answer those questions — and he probably won’t, at least with any specificity, unless he’s forced to do so. This story, which seemingly changes in every re-telling, is beginning to resemble nothing so much as Bill Clinton’s evolving explanation about his draft notice. It was then that most of America was introduced to “Slick Willie.”

Senator Obama’s speech on Tuesday was a brilliant effort to deflect attention away from what remains the core issue: what did Obama hear, when did he hear it, and what did he do about it? The answers, as best we can tell at this stage, is that Obama heard some very harsh things said from the pulpit of Trinity United Church of Christ; that Obama heard them said a long time ago and probably repeatedly; and that he did little or nothing about it. This from a man who tells us at almost every stop along the campaign trail that he has the “judgment to lead.”

One always wants to be careful about making sweeping conclusions about any individual, particularly one as interesting and compelling as Senator Obama. All of us, in replaying our lives, would change certain things. We would all hope to show more integrity, more courage, more honor. Nevertheless, in a presidential campaign we have to judge based on the available evidence. And given his deep and long-standing association with Reverend Wright, it is fair to ask whether Senator Obama — a gifted writer and speaker and a man of obvious intelligence and appeal — has the appropriate judgment and character to lead this nation. Spending 20 years at Trinity United Church of Christ under the leadership of Jeremiah A. Wright Jr. doesn’t tell us everything we need to know about Barack Obama — but it may well tell us enough.

This is what Hillary said on 10/10/07 regarding the MI Primary and leaving her name on the ballet: "It's clear, this election they're having is not going to count for anything"

Here's the audio of that statement:

Psssstt ... hey you, yeah you - Senator Clinton.  Obama isn't blocking the revote in Michigan.  The Michigan legislature is.
All I know is we don't need a racis, hate mongering, unamerican liar, running for President. Tell the Hussein guy to go to Pakistan.
While I do not believe Obama is a Muslim or that he is unpatriotic. I also do not truely believe he shares the same views as Rev Wright. I however now more convinced after the speech yesterday then before that he just does not stand up to tough issues. I still think it is a weakness to not stand up and try to unite the race starting from that church. Obama did not show that he is willingly to fight for unity at all levels. The idea that he is just now standing up and speak out against division between black and white is weak because it has self serving interest all over it. Now that he has much to loose, he is willing to speak out. However, when there is not presidential election on the line, then it was ok to allow hate to spread in front of you for 20 years. That right there is something I can not reconcile.

Clinton 08
the desperation is showing.
Nora Odonnell just said that she will contest the nominee if florida and michigan are not going to revote.
unbelievable.  she is a joke.
Desparation is not an attractive trait.
She said she would support finding a way to seat the two states' delegates regardless of the outcome. "I would be in favor of fixing this problem no matter what my position," she said. "I have been consistently in favor of it. Remember, I'm the one who kept my name on the ballot. I had no idea what the outcome would be."

===

THAT is why some people HATE Hillary.  She's a two-faced liar.  It's not irrational.  It's manifested right there.  Compare that statement to her prior one, in which she declares she only left her name on the ballot because she knew it wouldn't count.
I'm sure at times Senator Obama, especially early in his career, has had to maneuver as a traditional politician, in order to build a base. I won't hold that against him.

How sad would it be if we, as a country, would reject the most hopeful, potentially great president in generations, simply because his pastor has serious issues to work out?

I'm a 48 yr old white male from MI. I have some college and earn around 50k yr. I am not naive and do not drink kool-aid. Please don't insult my intelligence by accusing me of being brain washed. I can assure you, I am not.

I think MI should not have a re-vote. After Senator Obama has secured the nomination, I'm certain a reasonable solution to seating MI and FL delegates will be reached. You can not change the rules once the contest has begun. PERIOD

I do not hate Hillary or Bill. I try not to hate anyone. I could not bear it if she were to steal the nomination and if she were to pull it off I would vote for someone else.

We as a country have a once in a lifetime opportunity to take this great country, that I served honorably, to a place we could only dream of. Please give this man a chance. If history teaches us anything, Hill or McCain will be more of the same.

I appreciate all of the intelligent opinions here but not the thoughtless words of hate and intolerance.

Obama/Webb 08'
"Remember, I'm the one who kept my name on the ballot."  So is she admitting that she lied when she pledged not to participate in the Michigan primary?

I think its Obama that has to admit it was a mistake joining wright's church.

and that "race" speech was self-serving.

Clinton 08

I find it profoundly ironic that the candidate that is attempting to take the nomination DESPITE the fact that her opponent has won MORE STATES, MORE DELEGATES, and MORE POPULAR VOTE (even WITH Florida and Michigan outcomes COUNTED) is questioning the legitimacy of the nominee...Basically, she is saying that if SHE is NOT the Nominee then it MUST be illigitimate.

Further, Florida and Michigan are NOT Obama's FAULT.

Those states did this to themselves. The voters need to blame their legislators and hold THEM accountable for this.

That said, Obama has NEVER said he does not want a re-vote. His campaign LEGITIMATELY objected to the re-vote at which MI was looking for legal reasons, it would have been an utter mess - the vote MI was suggesting would have disenfranchised thousands of Independents and Democrats...

I agree with Hillary, these states ARE important. Too bad she did not fight this hard when the DNC decided to strip the two states of their deligates - THAT was the time to fight...and she said NOTHING...she made NO NOISE.

Come ON MSNBC - while Hillary is whining about this, there are REAL issues being discussed...like the economy - see Obama's speech on it today.
Now Clinton is telling us the overwhelmingly likely nominee of her party will be illegitimate.  Before he just wasn't ready to be commander in chief.  Thanks again, Hillary.
HRC: "I have been consistently in favor of it. Remember, I'm the one who kept my name on the ballot. I had no idea what the outcome would be. I did not run advertising in Florida. I abided by the rules and did not campaign in Florida. I didn't know what the outcome would be."

Complete and utter misstatement.  I wish I could find the quote, but she clearly stated in November of last year that it was to her understanding that the delegates in those states would not be seated as a result of breaking party rules by moving their primaries above 2-5-08.  She claims to not know what the outcome was going to be today when she claimed last year she understood what the outcome would be.

So she was for not seating the delegates before she was against it?  Flip flopper anyone?  The Republicans will eat this all up in November.
Desperation=Hillary Clinton  Everyone (even Mr. Penn in his deluded fantasy world of spin) knows that you no longer have a path to the nomination without napalming the Democratic Party.  Hopefully you'll come to your senses and bow out before Pennsylvania.  I still like Bubba and I would like for him to still be able to restore some of his legacy before you tarnish it further.
Come on Montana, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Indiana, Puerto Rico, South Dakota, Guam, Kentucky, Oregon and West Virginia!! Give the big boot to Hillary so we can go forward in this country!! We did it here in Virginia, and you can too! Together, yes WE can!
Funny how "interested" Hillary became in the rights of MI and FL voters after the fact. She was fine with the DNC ruling when she was the frontrunner, even saying she knew their votes wouldn't count and that was a consequence worth paying to follow the DNC rules.
Once the superdelegates realize Obama is a white and Jew hating racist, they will have to come back to Hillary, when they were correct in the first place. The tide is turning quickly.
Senator Clinton:
Your legitimacy is at stake.  You told us last October that the Michigan vote "didn't really count."  That was when you figured nobody could touch you.  Now you tell us it matters.

Your word has no legitimacy.
Whoever the nominee is, the day after Denver, CO, they will be considered legitimate.  (Especially if they won by following the rules).

Should Sen. Obama win w/o MI and FL's say, it just won't be a major issue for the general election.
and
Should Sen. Clinton steal the vote, Obama supporters will be P.O.ed for awhile, but sadly will in all likelihood support the nominee after a couple of weeks.  (See the conservatives ass-kissing of McCain).
Obama should agree and get with Clinton on Florida and Michigan and let the chips fall where they may.  What arguement can be offered that supports eliminating the votes of registered Democrats.
HILLARY!

The Obama camp offered to seat the Michigan  delegates and evenly splitting the delegate vote. You ARE saying you would support finding a way to seat the deleagtes NO MATTER the outcome. No MATTER the outcome. Well, the way has been provided and you have turned it down. Do not, DO NOT, any longer place this on Obama.

(Hillary sounds very desparate today. I wonder if she has received a call from Edwards telling her he was going to endorse Obama tonight).
Obama will seat the Michigan and Florida delegates as soon as he is the nominee.  Hillary knows this.  Everyone knows this.  This is Hillarys last game.
Obama is not "against" a re-vote in Michigan. His campaign quite honestly and, in my mind effectively, brought several issues with the plan as presented to the state congress. Their position is that a re-vote would not be the best way to rectify the situation, and also, "Hey, you'll probably get sued a whole bunch of times, which is totally your call."

Both campaigns were asked to vet the plan as presented. The Obama campaign did so with true professionalism. The Clinton campaign never spoke to the specifics of the plan. Never talked about the burdens on local officials except in terms of the cost, which they begged Democratic donors to carry. Has done nothing but spew sound bytes and disinformation designed to make them look like defenders of the innocent when in reality, they are nothing but vote-grubbing panderers.

Stay out of Michigan, Hillary. You only pretend to care about our problems once every four years, anyway. Hey, you got off lucky this year: you didn't even have to pretend to care until you were losing, and now, the only Michigan problem you care about is one you and your cronies and staffers helped create.

Don't treat us like we're stupid. "Remember, I'm the one who kept my name on the ballot. I had no idea what the outcome would be." Oh, please. You knew exactly what the outcome would be.

And we will remember.
Hillary claims that she didn't "campaign in Florida"? That's simply not true. Will she get away with saying this?
Desperation is too bad !!! It subdues human conscience.
Hillary is DESPERATE
Can't somebody call this woman on her LIES?

First Read: please copy/paste her statement last October about why she kept her name on the ballot: it was because "the vote doesn't matter."
Hahahahahahahahahahaha!!!!!

Did Hillary forget that SHE agreed that Michigan and Florida wouldn't matter?  Oh, that's right, that was BEFORE she was losing!!!

Has she forgotten that one of her cronies, Ickies, helped create and push through the rule that if these states moved up their primaries they would be punished?   Oh thats right, that doesn't matter.

Did Hillary forget that she is asking the super delegates to go against the will of the voters and "crown" her even though NOW she claims she is soooo concerned about "disenfranchising millions of voters".   What about all the voters she is wiling to disenfranchise if the supers go against the will of the people?

Oh, thats right.  None of that matters.  The only thing that matters is that she wins.

You Hillary supporters are fools and Billary and her crew are the laughing stock of this election.

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!

Obama 08
I was a Hillary supporter but at the last minute changed to Obama. I regret that decision because I listened to Clinton speak this past year and she was right on the issues concerning this country back then. Obama was into rhetorical speeches about nothing. Now there is a trust issue, along with a competency issue. It is not about his race, he needs to stop crying foul and playing the race card, he is not qualified nor deserves the office of the President of the USA. He has made poor choices and he has not stopped his supporters, mostly blacks and white college kids from all the hatred and racial remarks on the blogs. I hope people make the right decision, because we are in very big trouble right now and Hillary will make the country and the economy strong again and will work towards rebuilding our reputation around the world.
Please...will someone find a way to make this woman go AWAY.

The irony is Hillary already knows that she can not win a general election.  Her support among AA in a GE has fallen below 50% which is why she is trailing McCain.  The only bright spot for her is to make sure that Obama can't win in a GE to give her a shot (so she thinks)in 2012.  Well forget it lady after this primary you will be a greater outcast in the democratic party than Kerry ever was in trying for a second run.
She can spin, spin, spin but she can't hide from the PLEDGE that she SIGNED.  She either didn't think about the ramifications of signing that pledge, which doesn't portend well for her thinking as POTUS.  Or she thought she'd be so far ahead, primary in the bag that it didn't matter.

Either way the furthest thing from her mind was the welfare of the Michigan and Florida voters.
Oh man, she is such a self-serving hypocrite.
I don't understand how she can sit there, with a straight face, and blame Obama for Michigan and Florida not wanting to do a re-vote.  For those that don't know, the short story is, both states decided that there was not enough time to have a legitimate revote.  There were concerns, on both sides, that a re-vote funded with soft money would not be on the level.  I'm sure there will be a compromise and both states will be represented.  That said, please Senator Clinton, stop with the lies!!!!
Big Money owns the two party political system and the media. Every four years, Big Money presents its bought and paid for candidates, the media shoves them down out throats, and 50 percent of the electorate stays home.

This year, Big Money offers McCain and Clinton. He's already trying to start WWIII; she's famous for selling pardons to terrorists to win a senate campaign.

The people of this nation deserve better.
What has happened to my formerly great blog page? You are starting to look just like Obamas' website.I know six people that complain about their postings not showing up,but the Obamabots seem to be posted constantly. What is up with that? Please lose your "fox news" mentality, and try to regain your once-great integrity.Although you are still my favorite news cast, your blog seems to have been taken over by Jeremiah Wright and his "Church of Love(?)".Please come back MSNBC.We need you.
October 2007 Hillary Clinton:  "I'm leaving my name on the ballot because the Michigan vote is "not going to count for anything."

March 2008 Hillary Clinton:  "I have been consistently in favor of it.  Remember,  I'm the one who left my name on the ballot."

Anyone who votes for this woman has ZERO self-respect.

Why should Obama agree to a revote paid for by Hillary supporters? For goodness sake, they might just print up the ballots again without his name on it!!
I can't believe this woman - Hillary Clinton has no shame - I feel for you Hillary Supporters - My guy might have sat through a sermon at church but your lady is hell bent on destroying this party and possibly the country to get what she deems as her birth right.

This smells like desparation to me...who would have thunk it one year ago! Wasn't she the front runner, inevitable, already picking out her furniture. THis is HILLarious
Hey Chuck why don't you guys tell your friends on MSNBC that Gallup has a new tracking poll out that has it getting closer again and a CBS poll for the same time has Obama ahead.  Or does this just continue the narrative you want to have out there
ck thats called stealing an election. You know the think earlier Obam and his followers ranted and threatened everyone even the special delagates. Wonder if they will remember that? Wonder in Nov. if they remember Obama thinking there vote counts only  if he can win them when he tried before in MI to have people vote uncomitted and Hillary still won. She went to Fl and MI after the vote to thank them  not knowing what would happen. Its called class and careing about everyone. He will get it just not ready yet obama. He cannt be bothered with anyone less he needs them in next vote. His speech hid the economic try he did and it lost 97-0 he didnt even vote himself for it. Big laugh on tv over that.Showed his flip flops on war he is so not going to get this.Let MI and FL seat what they have than. If he does manage a steal he will never see Pres. win.gallop poll has Hillary over obam 49-42 and pa.51-35 pa.
